Inside The

Every October, the 20th Force Support Squadron lets loose and invites all manner of ghosts, ghouls, goblins, and more to set up their trunks and hand out treats to the delight of thousands of children, providing a safe and fun avenue for them to trunk-or-treat. Shaw’s Boo Bash is more than just about candy. It is a carnival-like atmosphere that includes bounce houses, games, balloons, costume contest, dancing, food, and more! This year, you are invited to enter your best pumpkin carving into the all new pumpkin carving contest. Do your carving at home and bring it to the Bash by 5:30 p.m. on October 27. Cash prizes will be awarded.

The “official” golf season is coming to a close, but here in South Carolina, we get 12 months of golfing weather. That means there is no reason not to start playing today! Sign up for Golf 101 and get basic instruction in the art of golf. Our PGA Pros can give you all the tools to step on to the course with confidence. Eric Wilson has been teaching all levels of golfers how to improve or start their game for last 12 years. If you aren’t ready to commit to the full class, come out on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. and hit some

balls on the driving range while Eric offers tips to help improve your swing. Who knows, with some direction you could be playing in one of the course’s upcoming tournaments such as the Turkey Shoot (pg 21), the Veteran’s Day Golf Tournament (pg 19), or the Ebenezer Scrooge Open. If you decide golf isn’t your game, we have lots of other sports and fitness events on base that you can check out to keep yourself and your kids healthy and happy!

Elegance The small touches add a charm that is unique to the Tee Top Café.

...the Tee Top Café has emerged as a dining experience that conveys elegance and class...

Redesign A beautiful aesthetic greets you as you enter the Café.

All New

tee top café

Bold. Healthy. Tasty. A new interior means a new experience all around. From its humble beginnings as the Golf Course “Snack Bar,” the Tee Top Café has emerged as a dining experience that conveys elegance and class without sacrificing the core purpose of a fast, affordable, tasty meal. The Tee Top Café features the same great menu favorites like the JFK Club or the Chicken Crispy Salad with Honey Balsalmic Glaze. So what has changed and is improved? We have added a large baked potato and daily

specials that will bring variety to the menu. Behind the scenes, the entire cooking and serving area has been redesigned with function in mind. The flow of the ordering line moves naturally after repositioning the ordering station to the opposite end of the line. New fryers, ovens, prep stations, and other improvements help speed up food preparation and get food to the customers in a timely manner. While you are waiting

for your custom meal to be prepared, have a seat and watch one of the new large screen televisions. Don’t worry about hearing if your order number has been called, the new handheld buzzer alert system will make sure you know when your food is ready! The Tee Top Café is open Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday. After 2 p.m. each day, the Tee Top Café is available for private functions and

catering. Plan your next squadron commander’s call, retirement party, or wedding reception at Carolina Lakes Golf Course. Take advantage of our A/V capabilities, incredible food, amazing views, and inviting decor. We can accommodate almost any event. Call 895-1399 to plan ahead and reserve your spot today.

Class The upgrades to the Tee Top Café were made possible through an Air Force initiative to improve the facilities at selected venues.

Rising

star

Shaw has a rising young star quietly making her mark on your DFAC dining experience. South Carolina native, A1C Jessica Singleton joined Team Shaw May 2018 after graduating from The Culinary Institute of Charleston as a Bakery and Pastry Chef. Shortly after arriving at Shaw, Singleton was asked to step in on the annual Cupcake Wars with little preparation. With no props to help present her cupcakes, she wasn’t the winner this year, but the judges remarked how delicious her

baked treats were. At the next one, Singleton plans to make sure she’s fully prepped for the event and ready to take home first prize! In the DFAC kitchen, Singleton has been making the recipes her own with little tweaks here and there. Like any good chef, she guards her secret ingredients, but they must be working because to hear tell her banana bread is a hotly requested item! You can get a taste of A1C Singleton’s culinary creations when you eat at the DFAC.

Creating an heirloom to last for generations Art is created to make a statement. A shadow box is a statement piece, one that has a strong tradition in military history. They hold a great deal of symbolism and honor for military members, marking their career through medals and awards from

their time of service. This piece of art showcases the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice to service of the United States of America. Because these tableaus of service are so meaningful, the staff at the Shaw Arts and Crafts Center take great care and precision in creating a lasting memory that becomes family heirlooms. They remind generations of decedents that their ancestor

put his or her life on the line in defense of the nation. In much the same way we as a country honor our Veterans every year in November, a shadow box is a personal honor to a member of our armed forces. This November, there are many ways the FSS honors our current and former military family members. Check out our other Veterans’ Day events from around the FSS.

What are you

thankful for?

I am thankful for Chief Hoglund and other bold leaders like him that always do what they believe is right - no matter what the consequences might be. They speak the truth to everyone, regardless of rank, even when it’s inconvenient or comfortable.

Thanksgiving is a time when we acknowledge the positives of the past year and our hopes for the next one. For many, that means giving thanks over a large meal with family. For military members, that isn’t always possible. So every year we ask our Team Shaw family members what they are thankful for. Here’s what they had to say.

Derek J. O’Malley, Colonel, USAF Commander, 20th Fighter Wing

I am thankful to the men and women, uniformed and civilian, who make up the backbone of the United States Air Force... the front line supervisor. They continue to selflessly commit themselves in order to deliberately develop our nation’s most precious resource...Airmen...and faithfully honor their families’ sacrifices to our service. Daniel L. Hoglund, CMSgt, USAF 20th Fighter Wing Command Chief

I’m thankful for my wife and my son, and the great opportunities we’ve had to serve with many great people as part of the Air Force. RICHARD K. BROWN, JR., Colonel, USAF Commander, 20th Mission Support Group

club membership

Joining the Carolina Skies Club has never been easier or offered more benefits. Even if you don’t eat lunch at the club every day (saving $1 every time), the FREE monthly membership meal for both you and your spouse pays for the fees itself. When you start adding in member only bene fits like Kid’s Club, UFC Fight Nights, and other event discounts, choosing a club membership becomes a no-brainer! Even at events like Football Frenzy, only club members have a chance to win cash prizes and even a trip to the Super Bowl. Just ask the two winners from Shaw in the past five years who have won! In case you missed it, the Air Force Club membership moved away from the credit card based membership to a membership that allows you to pay with whatever credit OR debit card you choose! All you have to do is stop in at the Carolina Skies Club and they will help you create your account. The new Air Force Club Member Portal also standardizes payment dates for dues. Members were charged dues at different times during the month under the old system. Now, all members get charged on the 15th of each month.

In addition, members will be better informed about club programs and events through the web portal and an application on their smart devices. The free MemberPlanet app is available in the App Store or Google Play. Since members won’t have physical cards to prove membership, they’ll now show their digital membership card through the MemberPlanet App on their smart devices. While this is a convenience for many members, some may still wish to carry a physical club card. The digital card can be printed at home and shown when visiting the club. Although there are many changes in the program, several important things remain the same. Club membership is valid at all Air Force clubs and members can cancel their membership at any time. When members deploy, their dues will be waived. Simply talk to the staff at the Carolina Skies Club to

initiate the pause on your accounts. Air Force club membership is a tradition. It’s where Airmen experience, learn, and share the Air Force culture. Clubs provide resiliency to Airmen and their families. This new approach to membership will make it easier for Airmen to stay connected with Air Force tradition and build on the culture and esprit de corps established by those who have previously served. Air Force team members – active-duty members, reservists, retirees and DOD civilians – who would like to join the club can visit the Carolina Skies Club to sign up and start receiving benefits TODAY!

Membership Matters Lunch buffet is fantastic & member discount makes it even better!

fun

It's fall in South Carolina and it's the perfect time to pack up the tents and head out to a camp site for a weekend of roughing it now that the humidity has dropped and the water is warm. If you have never been camping before, Outdoor Recreation is here to help! On October 10, come learn how to pitch a tent, utilize camp tools, and respect the land for just $5 per person. Once you've mastered camping, head up to Wateree Recreation Area to take advantage of the cooler weather and lower humidity. Campsites are only $7.50 per night, $18.75 per 3 nights, and $35.00 per 7 nights (all prices are per single tent). No reservations needed or required.
