CELEBRATING 77 YEARS OF SHAW AFB
INSIDE THE
COVER
On Aug. 7, 1941, with construction underway, Sumter Army Air Field became Shaw Army Air Field. It was an unusual move, as the War Department typically adopted the name of the nearest town for the hundreds of military installations springing up as World War II approached. But Sumter’s civic leaders were able to convince the South Carolina congressional delegation to pressure the War Department to honor a local, fallen warrior, 1st Lt. Ervin David Shaw. Born in Alcolu, S.C., 1st Lt. Shaw died during World War I, aerial combat over France on July 9, 1918, but not before downing two German warplanes. Shaw’s family moved to Sumter early in his life. According to his family, Shaw was a bit of a dare-devil teenager who drove race cars at a race track in Sumter, which his grandfather had built for him.
Send out the Bat Signal! Call for the Avengers to unite! It’s time for the 2nd annual Mother-Son Superhero Dance! Kids and parents are encouraged to dress up in their favorite superhero costume while dancing the night away. We can’t guarantee your identity will stay safe since we will have the Superhero Selfie Station in full operation for you to take home memories of the night. There may be a few villains in the room, please keep battles to a minimum as the Ballroom at the Carolina Skies Club has not been super-power proofed.
He enlisted in the Army on June 27, 1913, and spent his first four years serving at Savannah, Ga. He became a member of the American Expeditionary Force on Sept. 18, 1917, as an aviation cadet (private first class). The Army granted an honorable discharge on April 4, 1918, so Shaw could accept a commission as a first lieutenant (signal corps), Royal Canadian Air Service. One of just three Americans in the squadron, Shaw was assigned to pilot Bristol F.2Bs. The two-seat, fabric-covered, dual-winged fighters or observation planes were powered by a 190-horsepower engine which gave them a top speed of about 100 miles per hour.

On July 9, 1918, he and an observer, Sgt. T.W. Smith, climbed into a Bristol and lifted off alone for a reconnaissance mission behind German lines. They didn’t return.

“The circumstances of his passing are not known to us here in any detail,” friend and fellow squadron member 2d Lt. Bryan Batty later recalled. “It is known that as he was coming back to the lines after a long reconnaissance, he was attacked by three (German) machines. Their fire must have cut some vital member of (his) machine’s frame,
20TH FORCE SUPPORT SQUADRON
for it broke up in the air, according to a report from one of our advanced battery positions.” Shaw was the only Sumter County aviator MAGAZINE
to die in WWI. He is buried in a common grave with Sergeant Smith in Regina Trench Cemetery, Courcellette, France.

Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star At Shaw Air Force Base September 1949 - December 1954 This versatile design filled many different roles
in
the newly formed United States Air Force under the designation of F-80 and the reconnaissance version of RF-80. On Shaw Air Force Base, it was primarily assigned to the 161 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron and later as part of the 363rd Reconnaissance Wing. During the Korean War it became apparent that the Shooting Star was easily out-maneuvered by the more powerful and recently developed MiG and by the end of the Korean War, the fighter version had been replaced by the F-86 Sabre. The remaining Shooting Stars were used exclusively for reconnaissance missions.

Douglas RB-66 Destroyer At Shaw Air Force Base February 1956 - November 1974 The Douglas B-66 was based on the Navy’s A-3 Skywarrior (also by Douglas) and was meant to be a replacement for the sometimes problematic Invader. At first, the USAF intended the conversion to be an easy matter of removing the Navy’s carrier-specific features. As the list of modifications grew, the supposedly easy conversion became what was substantially a new aircraft. Many of the changes were due to the USAF’s requirement for low-level operations, while the Navy version had originally been designed and employed as a high-altitude nuclear strike bomber. Two major differences between the A-3 and the B-66 consisted in the types of jet engines used, and the emergency crew escape systems. Because the B-66 design proved to be versatile, many

versions were produced, including the EB-66 and WB66, both flown at Shaw.

McDonnell-Douglas RF-4 Phantom II At Shaw Air Force Base May 1957 - August 1971 The F-4 Phantom II entered military service to the Air Force in 1963. In the early years, it served as the primary fighter-bomber of the Air Force until aircraft production ended in 1979. On top of its outstanding combat record, the Phantom was also optimized to fly more specialized missions. The RF-4 was a reconnaissance aircraft built for speed, while the F-4 “Wild Weasel terrorized enemy antiaircraft missile installations. It is also the only aircraft to be flown by both the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.
