Back for the third year, our customer appreciation program, SMILE, is generating the bigggest smiles yet! In partnership with Freedom Honda of Sumter, your 20th Force Support Squadron is giving away a brand new Honda Civic LX to one of our lucky customers on January 31, 2019 at the Carolina Skies Club and Conference Center.
cover
In 2017, SMILE was recognized and adopted across the United States Air Force as a benchmark program. However, only at Shaw Air Force Base will you have an oppotunity to win a brand new car. In addition to the Honda Civic from Freedom Honda of Sumter, there is over $15,000 in cash and prizes that you can win. There are five unique ways to win. All of them start with you smiling! For complete details, turn to page 20 or online at www.thebestFSS.com/SMILE.
April is recognized as the Month of the Military Child. At Shaw, we kick off with our Spring Eggstravaganza! Kids of all ages get to race to pick up their candy and prize filled eggs in hopes of finding a Golden Ticket. Children are divided up into appropriate age groups so every kid gets a fair opportunity. Kids and parents can also participate in games, bounce houses and at the petting zoo. From donkeys, ponies, and cows to llamas and a kangaroo, you never know what you may find at the FSS zoo! The only way to find out and experience the celebration of our youngest military family members is to join us!

Healthy
eats
Physical health is one of the four components of Comprehensive Airman Fitness and part of physical health is proper nutrition and healthy eating. With busy daily schedules it is often easier to grab fast food or unhealthy snacks to keep us going. Improving your nutritional intake not only helps improve your overall physical well-being, there is evidence to support a well balanced diet will increase energy throughout the day, help prevent certain diseases, increase life expectancy, improve physical capabilities, and have better emotional stability.
The FSS offers numerous options for food on base and they all have healthy choices.
6 - TAKE 20 Magazine
So what’s available on base to maintain that new year resolution to eat healthy? LOTS! The FSS has numerous options for food on base and they all have healthy choices.
The Cosmic Grill located at Shaw Lanes Bowling Center has a variety of wraps, sandwiches, and salads to enjoy. Just look for the Healthy Heart Zone on the menu.
Rickenbacker’s three locations across the base offer healthy choices for breakfast, lunch, and the snacking in between. Check out the spinach, egg white, and cheese English muffin to start your day and an apple harvest chicken salad filled with delicious fruits, vegetables, and nuts to keep the energy up at lunch. Rickenbacker’s also offers a variety of fruits for snacks between meals.
If you are looking for something a little less “on the go,” head over to the recently redesigned Tee Top Cafe at Carolina Lakes Golf Course. The menu offers many healthy options like the Lemon Basil Chicken Shawich. Taking the chicken sandwich to a new level, the Lemon Basil Chicken Shawich adds freshly sliced mozzarella, baby arugula, fresh tomato to a seared chicken breast and a lemon basil mayo for a tasty sensation that your mouth will thank you for!
chicken ranch wrap One of the many fantastic wraps available at the Tee Top Cafe.
Apple Harvest chicken salad Available exclusively at Rickenbacker’s locations!
We at the FSS work hard to make sure that you can enjoy eating healthy at any of our facilities. Our mission is to make you smile!

new you
Nearly half of adults make a New Year Resolution; commonly, healthy lifestyle changes. According to research, only about 40 percent of those resolutions will be followed through after 6 months into the new year. So how can you increase the odds of staying on task? The Fitness Center and Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) have many ways for you to keep your resolutions including new aerobics classes, personal trainers, and personally designed diet and exercise plans. The Fitness Center has contracted with professional aerobics instructors to bring you the best classes for the specific needs of the active duty military members. This is not to say that DoD civilians and family members are left out! All aerobics class offerings are open to any DoD/Retiree card holder. But what if you can’t make the scheduled class times? The Fitness Center and Annex have still got you covered with Aerobics on Demand. These video led classes offer a
variety of levels and types of workouts. Ask at the desk for access to this innovative method of exercise. With exercise covered, nutrition is another huge New Year Resolution. However, many of these resolutions fail because of unrealistic expectations and fad diets that work in the short term but are unsustainable in the long term. The HAWC can help provide you with the help you need to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight for your lifestyle. The HAWC employs dieticians that can personally tailor a diet plan for you and teach you how to shop more healthfully, better eating habits, and manage weight. For more information on aerobics classes, please contact the Fitness Center at 895-2789 or the Fitness Annex at 895-0947. For more information & nutritional advice, or to establish a nutritional plan, contact the HAWC at 895-1216.
