Inside The
There are more than 1.8 million military children of Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines throughout the world, many of whom will experience the effects of family separation at some point in their lives. As April rolls around every year, we focus our attention to the youth that make up the military family by celebrating the Month of the Military Child. This month is dedicated to the sacrifices and challenges that are prevalent in having a parent actively serving. However, these unique challenges are not limited to one month out of the year. From frequent moves to long separations due to deployment, military children are often put into stressful and demanding situations every single day of the year and are expected to meet and overcome them.

St. Patrick’s history
St. Patrick’s day 5k Caption
Every March 17th, thousands of people dress in green, eat and drink green foods, and praise Irish tradition in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. But why do we really celebrate St. Patrick?
Patrick was captured in his early teens by the Irish and held prisoner. After his imprisonment and escape, Patrick studied at monasteries and eventually became a bishop. He was also commissioned to be an apostate to Ireland, fulfilling his vow to return to the island he’d grown to love. Patrick spent the next 30 years traveling from town to town in Ireland building churches and converting the Irish. Eventually, the entire island nation was converted. After his death on March 17, the nation mourned and he was heralded as the patron saint of Ireland.

Life As A Youth in The Military My military youth experience has been very rewarding, honorable, difficult, and inspirational. I am the daughter of an F-16 Fighter Pilot and Youth Program Director. Both of their careers are extremely important to the mission of protecting our country and providing quality programs for family members. My parents relied on the Family Home Day Care, Child Development Center, School Age Program, and the Youth Center to take care of me while they worked. Growing up in these programs from the age of seven weeks old never felt like a day care, but a home away from home. Although there are always whispers of danger for the military, I always felt safe. As I approach high school graduation, I am realizing that the world outside the gates seems empty. Everyone experiences rough times at some point, and during that most dreadful time it seems like there is no tomorrow. Being excluded from everyone at school as being different, watching my friends PCS, and my sister going off to college at a young age really left me in a recluse state of mind. I would only gravitate toward military children and shy away from all others. I knew I was different but accepted my awkwardness because at the end of the school day, I had something to look forward to at the Youth Center.
Kenzie MacQueen Age 17 - 12th Grade
I am heavily influenced by the hardships some children encounter in the military and it has developed a desire to pursue a career as a Child Life Specialist. Military youth programs have been a Godsend for children who are faced with difficult situations or need extra care while their parents work or fight for our country. My goal is to help children and youth find hope in their darkest moment when facing parent’s deployments, illnesses, or tragedies. I thank the military programs for teaching me at a young age to respect myself and others, love myself, and accept my uniqueness. My life as a military child isn’t always easy. Moving can be pretty hard especially when you have made such good friends and have to leave them behind. It is also hard when your parent’s deploy or leave for training. Though it may be hard, you have to make the most of it and be grateful for the new experiences.
As a military child, I’ve experienced many things. From moving place to place every three years, to the long deployments for my dad, to learning to make new friends. When my dad deployed to Iraq and was gone for a year and a half, we couldn’t talk for long periods of time since he was busy with the war. The year he came back, my whole family was very happy. Then we had to move to Germany and then to South Carolina.
Mariah Blakey Age 11 - 5th Grade
Life as a military child has good and bad things about it. The good things about being a military child is getting to experience new places. I have lived overseas eight years of my life. One of the things I loved about living overseas was that I got to try new foods, travel a lot, and experience different cultures. Unfortunately, I also experience deployments with my parents and it can be hard at times, but we use new technology to keep in touch.

“
The first year in South Carolina, my dad had to deploy to Kuwait for six months. As a young kid, I thought that was forever. As time went by, we were able to text and talk to him during his deployment which made it easier. Unfortunately, just when we thought Dad was on his way home, we got sad news that he had to stay another six months. When he finally came back home, he had many interesting stories to tell us that I will always remember. When my dad retired, he didn’t seem as stressed with worry of deployments and leaving his family and excited to be able to spend more time with us.
