Introducing

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

TAMMY GALLANT

with TS Gallant Photography

Ray and Tammy Gallant moved to Cape Coral 13 years ago. Originally from Montana, they had been in Ohio for a year before moving here. “I married my best friend while he was still in the Navy Reserves,” said Tammy. Ray had already done 16 years of active duty, then finished up the last 5 in the reserves. At his retirement, Ray was the most decorated person in the building! They came to Florida because Ray was offered a position with CenturyLink where he is an installation and repair technician. Ray also helps Tammy as her photography assistant whenever he can. They have 2 daughters and a son, all currently residing in Montana. They also have 3 dogs: two 12-year-old Pomeranian brothers and a 7-year-old female German Shepherd who lives to play ball and frisbee.

Tammy started TS Gallant Photography back in 2004 in Billings, MT. She was regularly published in the Billings Gazette and was also featured in the Sports Car of American and the Yellowstone Region SCCA News.

“My love of cameras comes from my dad” said Tammy. “He bought me my first little 35mm film camera when I was 10.” The love of photography was something they had in common until his death last summer. Tammy always loved photography and after a lot of online encouragement by pros who though her work was good enough, she made the move from hobbyist to professional photographer. She has since been published in several newspapers and magazines around the world.

She now focuses primarily on portraiture, especially children from birth to 18. She offers not only traditional photography, using either natural or studio light, but she also offers compositing, utilizing chromakey technology. With portraiture, Tammy can photograph children, families, engagement sessions, pets and corporate headshots. As a hobby, she pursues artistic photography, wildlife and commercial photography.

“I'm hard-pressed to pick just one thing” about Cape Coral that makes it the best place to live, said Tammy. “It's got everything, rural, urban, businesses around the corner one direction and secluded nature trails around the other. It's got old-school charm and new age hop. It's just pretty darned perfect!” Tammy is a motorcycle enthusiast, owning 3 motorcycle and no cars or trucks. Tammy and Ray ride their motorcycles across the county every year, and do motorcycle charity runs whenever the schedule allows. “I really love working with the Rebel Riders and their missions,” Tammy declared. “They are known for their anti-bullying movement and suicide prevention. I am a strong supporter of any veteran cause.” Tammy and Ray also do work as “Santa and Mrs. Claus.” (Look closely at the picture and you'll understand why!)

If you need a photographer for any reason, check out TS Gallant Photography online at www.tsgallantphotography.com or call 239-313-1477.

Porter

From the Brewer.......

BEER

8

one of the more significant events in brewing history is the introduction of the porter. a hand in hand partnership with the rapidly growing english Industrial Revolution allowed this style to gain some serious momentum. porters were slowly developed by the continuous improvement of the more traditional Brown ales being brewed at the time. Focus on quality and satisfaction, as well as the fight for customers, allowed the beer to develop. the name “porter” was adopted for these beers because of the immense popularity with the porters who carried goods around the city. the growing popularity of this style, along with the continued industrial revolution, began to change the brewing industry from small neighborhood style brewpubs to the true commercial breweries that we know of today. large commercial breweries were built and took advantage of the improving trade routes throughout the British Isles, resulting in Irish and Scottish breweries leaning towards bankruptcy. their only solution was to brew their own porters. arthur guinness began brewing porters in the 18th century while following the path of continuous improvement, eventually becoming known for his “stout porter.” He eventually built, at the time, the largest brewery in the world. the maturation of the beer drinkers palate, and the introduction of lighter and (often known as) “finer” beers to the market such as pilsners and pale ales, put the porter on a downward trend. Industry restrictions and rationing over the course of two world wars did not help the style, and by the 1940’s a porter was difficult to find. With the birth and excessive growth of the craft beer industry throughout the world, the porter has been considered the most versatile style allowing for experimentation and true to its history, continuous improvement. “Studying the history of porter is like staring into the multidimensional universe of theoretical cosmology, with multiple shifting parallel worlds constantly warping and shifting with the flow of time. the more you try to pin it down, the more it wriggles free and becomes something unexpectedly different.” – Randy Mosher Cheers.

done by Dēroc studio for hair Celebrates one year in Cape Coral

Exciting Events Planned Throughout the Month of April

When Derrick Driver and his wife Rebecca Hebert were looking for a place to open their own business, Cape Coral seemed like the perfect city. They were seeking an energetic, cutting-edge and creative community and Cape Coral checked all of those boxes.

“One reason we were attracted to this area is because of the sense of community - there are yearround residents here, not just the typical snow birds that only spend the winter here,” said Derrick, who along with Rebecca opened done by Dēroc studio for hair at 840 Lafayette St. in downtown Cape Coral in April of 2017.

The hair salon will celebrate its one year anniversary during the entire month of April with giveaways,

a new community-selection charity program and celebrations including hosting the Chamber of

Commerce After Hours and Ribbon Cutting Party on April 19.

Derrick and Rebecca believe an important part of their success that sets them apart from competitors is educating their guests.

“We clearly communicate with our guests and discuss the hair style they are looking for and the

factors that go into it: how much time it will take to fix every day, the upkeep of the color and in-

between trims and deciding if this style is something that will fit into their lifestyle. We go through

all that so it’s an informed decision and they leave with confidence that this is the right hairstyle for

them,” said Derrick.

The salon is also a family effort. Derrick’s daughter Zoë is a stylist there and Rebecca’s parents Joe

and Louise Hebert, also Cape Coral residents, are investors in the salon. Louise currently serves on the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees.

Things are going so well since the couple opened done by Dēroc studio for hair that they are starting

to think about expansion at some point. Their vision is having multiple salons in the southwest Florida area, offering employees ownership opportunities as they look to broaden their careers.

“My passion is creativity,” said Derrick, an illustrator who has also designed comic books in the past.

“I like to be creative and work artistically. And hair is one of those mediums. It’s immediate

gratification.” Another way he expresses his creativity is through the design and building of all the interior stations and furnishings throughout the salon.

Learn more about the done by Dēroc studio for hair including booking an appointment online at donebyderoc.com. Contact the studio at 239-230-1124 send an email to info@donebyderoc.com

MOVIE REVIEW

In 1927, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit appeared in the very first Oswald cartoon. In 1932, Bugs Bunny was introduced to Warner Brothers. In 1942, Bambi made a friend named Thumper. In 1951, Alice chased a late rabbit down a hole. In 1988, Roger Rabbit was shared with moviegoers worldwide and in 1999, Neo followed the white rabbit.

But when you turn on the television, they become sarcastic nuisances to society whose sole purpose is to torture humanity. Why is this? In over 50 films, rabbits are forced into the role of the antagonist or irritating sidekick. Yes, at times the rabbit itself can take the title of the ultimate irritation since their only goals in life are to eat, hop and reproduce.

So why rabbits? Sweet looking fluff balls that don’t appear to shine in the intelligence department and are prey animals. No one who watched Bugs ever wondered why he was such a jerk, it was just the way he was. Not just Bugs, but all cinematic rabbits.

Bugs Bunny, the king of cinematic rabbits, first appeared as a neurotic maniac on a sugar rush, then finally mellowed out years later into a sarcastic trickster. Peter Rabbit, the rabbit with a blue jacket and no pants, plainly tries to murder Mr. McGregor in the new 2018 movie in such a way that is impossible not to laugh. Snowball, from The Secret Life of Pets, is an insane escape artist, and I mean incredibly insane. All these rabbits are funny to watch, but when stripped of humor, they symbolize a tenacious existence using the typical “meek victim is secretly a force to be reckoned with” trope.

Despite their innocent appearance, rabbits are not as loving or adorable as they seem. Mother rabbits are tough towards their young and will leave their babies unattended for long periods of time without feeding.

As it turns out, the origins of the cruel rabbit go all the way back to Medieval times. There are many images in the 10th and 11th century using rabbits to show such themes, but then multiple artists started painting them as revenge seekers going after hunters in humorous and rather violent ways.

Rabbit Season By Rachel Roth

Modern films have not shied away from expanding this, using them as a metaphor for the weakling or underdog that is just as intelligent and strong willed as a predator. A less violent one in modern film is Judy Hopps from Zootopia. She’s a tiny and cute bunny who hates being called cute, and who decides she wants to be a cop even though there has never been a bunny cop in history. They tell her she can’t do it, but she proves to be a relentless match for any criminal.

The 2001 film Donnie Darko has another implacable rabbit that is actually a man named Frank in a rabbit suit. Frank symbolizes a loss of innocence, the power of it and the corruption it can bring.

We see this theme in typical horror films as well, where particularly violent rabbits sometimes show up. The 2015 film, The Witch, has the Devil and his consorts on earth corrupting a simple Puritan family, and with them are two animals associated with evil, a goat and a rabbit.

Witches and rabbits are both subjects of magic and femininity and are both popular among the hunted. Rabbits are at the bottom of the animal hierarchy, basically fed on by all predators. Their survival depends on their creativity and on their tricky ability to hide in plain sight. Movies are all about magic, movie magic, and they love metaphors. What better animal than a rabbit? They are the perfect movie animal.

Some of the best family-friendly rabbit movies are: 1. Peter Rabbit (2018) 2. Zootopia (2016) 3. Bambi (1942) 4. Alice in Wonderland (both 1951 and 2010) 5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1998) 6. Harvey (1950) 7. Rise of the Guardians (2012) 8. Hop (2011) 9. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)

Some not so family-friendly movies: 1. Donnie Darko (2001) 2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) 3. Watership Down (1978) 4. White Rabbit (2013) 5. Celia (1988) 6. Night of the Lepus (1972)- in the so bad it’s good category.

CAPE PETS

VALOR We met Valor in January after our dog died. Friends run a local organization called Wolfhounds Legacy here in Cape Coral. They rescue dogs of all breeds, train them, and then partner them with veterans who suffer with PTSD. Their motto is “Saving two lives at a time.

Service dogs are a huge benefit to our veterans, providing them comfort and helping with duties they may not be able to do for themselves. Our veterans suffer the unimaginable, and service dogs help them in so many ways as they return to a civilian life.

The training is not easy and it is not for every dog. Dogs need to be submissive, they need to be able to ignore people and pets around them, they need to be focused only on their partner and their partner's needs. Our Valor, or Valley as we call her, is one of those who may not make the cut. But that's OK, she's happy and healthy and we adore her! If you know a veteran who suffers with PTSD, please have them contact Wolfhounds Legacy at www.wolfhoundslegacy.com.

ShomariMASON

CAPE KIDS WITH

Submitted by proud parents Alphonso and Lavinia Mason

Shomari Mason was born on March 10th, 2001 at Healthpark Hospital to parents Alphonso and Lavinia. Growing up in Fort Myers, Shomari always had big dreams, but he was actually scared to walk on grass as a baby. He would soon dominate the green pastures.

Shomari attended J. Colin English Elementary School in North Fort Myers, but his family moved to Cape Coral in 2004. Even as a young child, Shomari was very competitive. He earned the nickname “Lil' Sho” at birth because he always had to be the center of attention around his family, no matter what. Growing up, he has been blessed with raw, natural talent and skills, on and off the field.

Sho (as he is called by family and friends) attended Mariner Middle School, but when he was cut from the basketball team, it changed his whole perspective regarding his work ethic and desire to succeed. He started training harder and smarter, working on his technique. All his training paid off, as Shomari is one of the best Pop Warner players to ever come through the Cape Youth Football Association. Around the end of Sho's 5th grade year, he started attending a lot of youth camps. The first one was the Al Golden camp in Miami. “I'll never forget the sounds and expressions everybody gave Shomari when he was just a little guy,” said dad, Al. Shomari attended the Al Golden camp 4 years in a row, along with camps at FAU, FIU, USF, UF and FIT.

Shomari is more than just an athlete. He is a member of the Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Myers. He's been a Junior Coach for the Cape Youth organization for 4+ years. Sho is a big inspiration to his little brother, 9 year old Al, Jr. And he is a great friend and mentor to those who know him.

The biggest accomplishment of Shomari's life to date has been making the US17 National Football Team in 2017 at West Georgia University. Sho had great scoring drives in 2 different games and was invited to play running back in the International Bowl, played at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. He had another great game and an amazing life experience.

Shomari is currently a Junior at Ida Baker High School, and has already had 2 recruiting trips to FAU and Bethune Cookman. He'd like to get his college degree in Sports Management, with a minor in Physical Therapy. Eventually, he'd like to become a sports agent or a college football coach. His goal is to attend college in the southern states so that his family can continue to support his football career, traveling to see his games whenever possible.

The Mason family thanks God for all that he has given Shomari and for the people who have supported him and his family over the years. THE MOOSE IS LOOSE IN CAPE CORAL The story behind Morgan “Moose” Wright’s becoming an American Ninja Warrior. Written by Melanie Musick

I

t’s amazing what some daddies will do for their baby girls. Some dads dress up in unicorn costumes for Halloween, while some dads are coerced to quit smoking. Yet others step up to become American Ninja Warriors…well, at least one in Cape Coral did! This is the story of Morgan “Moose” Wright, a P.E. teacher at Diplomat Elementary, who is now known to many as one of NBC’s “American Ninja Warriors,” all because of a request from his daughter, Josalyn.

You see, baby girl knew how athletic her daddy was, so for her 10th birthday she requested that he apply for the show. She’d spent countless hours watching and analyzing the program’s competitions. Then, as any good dad would, Morgan made good on his birthday promise to her. Part of the application process involved submitting a video to highlight his TV “worthiness” and athleticism. Josalyn served as the film crew for her dad’s application. As a veteran of Afghanistan, Morgan had the physical endurance needed to compete. Plus, he had a yearning for competition. Added to that was his boxing experience while enlisted and mixed martial arts (MMA) after the military. It was a recipe for a Ninja in the making.

Morgan attended Officer Candidate School to finish his college education and, after his first year of teaching, he was deployed. In active service from 2004-06, he completed his service in 2006 having attained the rank of 1st LT. He then began obstacle course racing known as “mud runs” and returned to teaching. This teacher Ninja has been named Teacher of the Year four times and was the first P.E. teacher to receive the coveted Golden Apple in 2013.

So, back to the TV show…out of 75,000 applicants, Morgan was one of 625 called to compete in Season 8 (2016) where he made it to the 4th obstacle in the Atlanta qualifier. That’s where his silly moose hat was first

20

CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

noticed. Even though he’d been eliminated, he continued to cheer on the other competitors all while wearing the hat. (That same hat has also been used to keep the attention of his 950 elementary students.)

In 2017, he submitted a second application and was chosen for the Kansas City qualifier, in which he ran fast enough to qualify for the city finals the next evening. Again, he wiped out after beating the famous “Warped Wall” before finishing the full obstacle course; however, his time was fast enough to qualify for the top 15 which meant a trip to Las Vegas. At age 42, he was the oldest of all competitors and was running the obstacle course at 3 am, because filming takes place between 9 pm – 5 am to capture the best lighting effects. And all the while he was competing, the crowd was chanting, “Moose, Moose, Moose!”

Morgan has had to completely fund his trips to the city qualifiers; only if he makes it to the finals in Las Vegas does the show cover his expenses. For Seasons 8 and 9, he was frantically fundraising to be sure his family was part of the experience, cheering him on from the sidelines in Atlanta and Kansas City. Since competing in the show requires that he be away from his teaching gig 4-6 days at a time, he sends videos to his students reminding them to behave in his absence. Currently he’s waiting to hear from NBC if his third application results in an invitation to return for Season 10.

What has been the most important “take away” from the reality show experience? “What people do with their 15 minutes of fame,” Morgan says. “I’ve enjoyed inspiring others to continue their fitness journey or start one. Like other folks, I want to be active as I age. I don’t know anyone who finished a workout and thought ‘That was a complete waste of time.’” He has done lots of volunteer work and guest appearances for various age groups. “Children are often paying more attention │

APRIL 2018

than adults may realize,” Morgan explains. Some of his volunteer service is as an instructor at Tropical Twister Gymnastics here in the Cape.

In addition to keeping him personally motivated, his TV appearances have made teaching significantly easier. “I now have immediate buy-in from my students. Fitness has to be fun to keep kids’ attention.” As a high schooler, Morgan was under five feet tall, weighing in at less than 100 pounds. “After what I went through as a kid, my goal is to help other children find their strengths.”

Regardless of size or ability, Morgan’s students quickly learn that it’s OK to be kind when competing. “My students are very aware that manners are not going out of style in my classroom.” He also adds, “I strongly believe a well-run P.E. program sets the discipline for any elementary school.”

The benefits of his experience have also included family-focused fitness for his wife and children. Wife Lisa is regularly working out at Omni Fight Club, while daughter Josalyn is constantly straining to beat dad’s time in long distance running. Son Jaxon is already participating in obstacles for kids. As a father, Morgan doesn’t give weekly allowances to his children. Instead, he rewards them for fitness. Each mile is worth $1, and 25 push-ups earn 25 cents. After seven years of doing this, he’s had to revamp his payout system as Josalyn and Jaxon’s endurance has increased. “At their best, I was paying out $40 a week per child. As they have gotten better, I’ve increased the difficulty a bit,” Morgan declares. “They can still earn $40+ weekly though.”

To see Morgan’s “American Ninja Warrior” competitive play, search YouTube for Morgan Moose Wright. Whether you’ve watched the show or not, it’s quite remarkable that we have a reality TV show personality living among us in the Cape just like he’s a regular Joe. Well, make that a regular Moose.

Understanding the Key Risks in Retirement

Submitted by Rebecca A. Ross

Planning for these risks can improve the odds of a successful retirement Part 2 longevity Risk

It is no secret that people are living longer in retirement today than at

any point in history. Advances in medicine and technology have had

an impact on aging within our society. However, nobody wants the success of their retirement plan to be contingent on an early death.

Many people underestimate how long they will live, increasing the likelihood of outliving their assets. Married couples have unique issues

to consider – how will things change when either spouse outlives the

costs ranging from $43,000 for assisted living facilities and home

health care, all the way up to $82,000 or more for nursing home care.

These are significant expenditures which show no sign of decreasing.

Traditional solutions such as Medicare and Medicaid are helpful, but

they aren’t always enough to meet an individual’s needs. This is where

strategies such as private insurance coverage and appropriate savings strategies come into play.

Knowing the Signs and Symptoms of Heart Disease In the United States, over 730,000 Americans suffer heart attacks every year. Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women. Various disorders are major contributors in heart complications, like stress, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis (plaque in arteries), family history, smoking, and obesity. Arterial plaque, narrowing of the vascular arteries, and the lack of oxygen causes heart attacks. Every 40 seconds someone in the United States dies of myocardial infarction. Heart attack Symptoms • Chest Pain and tightness • Lightheaded • Dizzy • Tired/Fatigue • Shortness of breath • Anxiety • Rapid heart rate • Sweating • Gray color to skin • Arm/Shoulder Pain • Abnormal heart palpitations

Risk Factors of Sudden Cardiac arrest • Coronary Heart Disease • Personal or Family History of SCA or Heart disorders • Drug/Alcohol Abuse • Prior Hear Attack • Heart Failure • CHD/Coronary Heart Disease

If you have any of the symptoms above, please call 911. The sooner you get treated, the better your chances of survival.

Over 325,000 people will experience a sudden cardiac arrest per year. It is the number one cause of death in the United States, leaving 90 percent of its victims deceased. Unlike Cardiac Arrest (a heart attack), where a portion of the heart stops due to a blockage, in the case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, it’s not a blockage problem; it’s an electrical stimulation problem. If defibrillation is not administered immediately, the likelihood of survival is bleak. A defibrillator sends an electric shock to the heart that stops the heart‘s ventricle fibrillation (an irregular arrhythmia) so that it can start beating and pumping normally again.

24

CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

If a person experiences a sudden cardiac arrest and an AED (automated external defibrillator) is not available, CPR (Cardio pulmonary resuscitation) should be administered until defibrillation can be applied. This is the reason that many public places, like airports, sports venues, shopping centers, hotels, and more have automated external defibrillators available. The AED’s can detect whether or not the person is truly suffering from a serious arrhythmia, and only sends the shock to the heart if this has occurred. This prevents the average person from making the error of seeing a person fainting and mistakenly thinking that they are in a life-threatening case of a sudden cardiac arrest. AED’s are straightforward and easy for anyone to use, but because we are dealing with the perilous seconds of someone’s life, sometimes AED’s are not used quickly enough.
