BOONDOCKS RETURNS The popular Black cult animated TV series is set to return to our screens in 2014. The American based animated sitcom first aired in 2005 was created by Aaron McGruder based on McGruder’s comic strip of the same name. Documenting the life of an AfricanAmerican family, the Freemans, they moved from the South Side of Chicago, Illinois to the fictional, peaceful and mostly white suburb of Woodcrest. IIn 2007 the envelope pushing series was recognised with the prestigious Peabody Award for the episode title ‘Return of the King,’ which was written by Gruder and re-imagines Dr Martin Luther Kings Jr awakening from a coma and reacting to contemporary phenomena from gansta rap to the war on terror. Many people will welcome the return of this show as it global success not just in America but globally.

CHERYL AND DANNI RETURN TO X FACTOR?
What other crazy expolits will we see next from Miley.
According to reports Simon Cowell has considered rehiring both Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue for £3million each for the next season of the music talent show. JAY Z SUED FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT Rap mogul, Jay Z is being sued for copyright infringement over an unclear sample in his 2009 hit, ‘Run This Town.’
I can’t understand why Cowell would want to reinstate either one of them as the show has not lost its appeal by not having either one on the show- lets watch this space and see what Cowell has in store.

24/7 MOTORING RANGER ROVER SPORT By Jazinhino Phillips Manfucturer: Range Rover Price from: £51,550 - £74,995 The new Range Rover Sport has taken a new turn. It now looks like a bigger version of the Evoque which is fantastic news for those of us that love the shape of the Evoque. Now I’ve heard a few criticism’s regarding the shape, the most popular one being “I don’t like it, it looks like its been squashed”. Now like the old boy Clarkson I am quite passionate about cars & I could easily find myself engaging in battle when somebody expresses their opinion, which sometimes turns out to be complete hogwash. Land Rover’s engineers claims that this car is their most agile,
ultimate luxurious, & most responsive Land Rover ever. Now that is a huge statement considering they’ve set the bar pretty high already. The previous model was based on the Discovery & shared the same chassis. The Range Rover Sport is in between the Range Rover & the Evoque. This model however shares more with the new Range Rover & has an aluminium construction. The aluminium construction has made the car much more lighter (420 kg lighter than the previous sport), agile, & more fuel efficient. There are three engines available, the 5 litre V8 supercharged petrol engine 510 BHP which helps you get from 0-60mph in 5 seconds dead. The V6 diesel engine comes with two power outputs 255 & 288 bhp. 0-60 is in 7.1seconds & 6.5 seconds. A 4.4 V8 version will be available sometime in the future. Options for this car include 18
22 inch wheels, personalised illuminated treadplates, Meridian signature reference system with 1700w & 23 speakers, & privacy glass. There’s even an option to put an additional two seats in the back which transforms this car into a seven seater. I must warn you that this is only suitable for Hobbits & dwarfs, take heed of my advice unless you want to run the risk of getting a visit from Social Services for child abuse. Essentially what I am telling you is that anybody over the age of 11 years old would not be able to cope sitting back there. I almost forgot to mention there is a wifi hotspot in the vehicle & there’s also an option for four-zone climate control which enables passengers in the front & back to have their desired temperature without possibly turning into a fatal 4 way match. This car is much more spacious than previous model. On average the car gives around 15mpg on the petrol version. Some reports have shown 12mpg. The transmission is an eight speed automatic gearbox which has various different options for tarmac & off road driving. Torque Vectoring
Control which aides the driver to handle the car through corners without leaning like Fat Joe. Off road the car handles extremely well, slippery steep slopes, climbing over rocks, even wading in the water shows you that this car has no respect for any type of surface. The levels of spec available are SE, HSE, HSE DYNAMIC, & AUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC being the top of the Range (no pun intended).

Land Rover Freelander 2 SD4

be fewer accidents such is the ability to see other vehicles, and road situations, from a great vantage point.
By Rodney Hinds THERE’S AN awful lot to admire about the Land Rover Freelander 2.
The drive is decent too. It is easy to drive and the auto box is smooth as silk.
If the elegant Range Rover or Range Rover Sport are out of your price range, you would do well to consider the latest reincarnation of the popular Freelander.
Apart from being a good looker, the Freelander is also highly practical. Legroom in the front and back means four adults should get in comfortably.
The high seating position gives a great view out. In fact I’ve always believed that if all vehicles had high driving positions, there would
The boot - with its handy wipe-down surfaces - is a decent size, although its shape is hindered by the large wheel arches, which intrude on floor space.
“The high seating position gives a great view out”
Folding the seats flat increases the boot’s volume from 755 litres to 1,670 litres, while big door bins and a usefully sized glovebox provide handy storage for bits and pieces. The facelift has been focused on the interior, where a new centre console gives it a muchneeded quality lift. There’s a new touchscreen infotainment system, the option of high-end audio, 20
even an electronic parking brake and colour reversing camera. New colours and materials make it look more lifestyle and a flash new Dynamic trim line takes some of the Evoque’s standout style and gives it a more family-friendly twist. The Freelander is competent to drive on-road and more than capable off it. The Freelander 2 is a brilliant all-rounder, though it’s not exactly cheap. One memorable journey during my week’s evaluation was to Glorious Goodwood. The Freelander 2, in Firenze Red with Windsor leather ebony seats, induced admiring looks and after a marvelous seven days with it, it would be fair to say that it is a real thoroughbred. The new Freelander 2 gives you the confidence and capability to cope with all conditions. It has strong lines, distinctive headlights and a purposeful stance. In keeping with my trip to Goodwood; it is a real winner! 21

BRICK CITY ARE ‘DOING THE DAMN THING.’ 24/7 Live... hangs out with rising stars “BRICK CITY” on their video shoot
By Gavin Peters Its a cold sunday afternoon, and I have found myself in a derelict Graffiti tunnel in Londons Waterloo which for the next 8 hours will be home to the video shoot for one of the UKs rising music group. 24/7Livelistings.com introduces X Factor runners up Brick City. Comprising of Anton, Duane, James and Yazmin. The group have been performing together for nearly a year i caught up with the lively quartet on the set of their debut single, ‘Do the Damn Thing.’ HOW DID YOU FORM AS A GROUP? D: We started at the beginning of this year, and basically how we formed was we all kinda grew up together- we were friends from childhood me and James in particular Ant: i don’t know them (he jokes and all members laugh) D: With Anton me and James we met when we were working together doing promotions and stuff like that and we all kind of hung out, then Anton met Yaz and we formed Brick City. WHERE DID THE NAME BRICK CITY COME FROM AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN? J: The name was pretty easy- we literally had two names to choose from. -im not gonna mention the other one... Yaz: Don’t mention the other one… (she smiles) J: So we had…(pause) to choose from or Brick City, and Brick City just stood out to us and represented what we are about- four individuals from London- it just felt good. Yaz: Like four bricks coming together…. and unity (they all clap and laugh)
WHAT WAS IT LIKE LEAVING X-FACTOR? Ant: do you know what leaving X-Factor was probably the hardest for us- we was upset. We was depressed, we don’t mind telling you. Yaz: We was definitely in shock cos’ like through the whole competition all we was getting was good comments Ant: …just to get that ‘your going home’ J: Oh my gosh even hearing those words! (he says animatedly) Y: When James took off that jacket he was like Noooo (they all laugh) WHAT HAS PEOPLES REACTIONS BEEN LIKE? Ant: The reaction since we left the show has been crazy, people coming up to us in the street, tweeting us, everything… like you lot should be there and we can’t believe it.- thats whats given us that drive to keep on going. Ant: everyone is so team Brick City.
SO ARE YOU HAPPY IN A WAY YOU NEVER GOT THROUGH? A: We believe everything happens for a reason. Yaz: it would have been good to go through live shows… J: We would have killed that competition. Ant: who knows we might get signed, we might not- we may even go back next year but we’re not sure yet. D: the thing is as well, we would not be able to do things like thisshooting our first music video which is written by Brick City, and we are here and its absolutely amazing. we also have to think about the things we wouldn’t have been able to do and we are so thankful so its good. Ant: …And we got far, we have only been together since January and we got all the way to live shows… (realises his mistake and whole group laugh) …we went to New York Judges houses so. WHAT WAS GOING TO NEW YORK LIKE FOR THE GROUP? Yaz: i have never been to New York J: Nor have I Ant: It was awful (he jokes) Yaz: And we have never been away together D: It was good we have McDonalds every day…(laughs) J: there was like 4 of us in one room and we literaly had 1 double bed a cabinet and 1 double bed and that was it. Ant: ask who share with Yaz? J: we all had to share. Ant: It depends where we dropped… thats your Brick city exclusive- Brick City shared a bed. WHATS IT LIKE TO BE FILMING YOUR FIRST MUSIC VIDEO? D: its amazing, even to think about the whole set up- its so funny cos’ we was looking at some of the images and we saw the treatment and we was like ok this is cool but it was all on paper. to be here and everyone thats come down to support us its incredibleits more than what we could imagine. TELL US ABOUT THE SONG AND WHAT ITS ABOUT? J: ‘D.T.D.T.’ its basically a statement, and it basically means no
matter what job you have to do, whether your a dustbin man, cleaner or a policeman sometimes your all gonna go through those days when you don’t want to do it and its like ‘low it 9 o’clock start I’m tired you got to get up and do it and find the goodness out of every little job despite how much you don’t want to do it and thats what it means- ‘do the damn ting’ HOW MUCH OF YOUR SONGS DO YOU ACTUALLY WRITE? Yaz: all of us have an input, James is quite good at songwriting. We all do individually in different ways but james is like the guy for that and we all put our own ideas- like we go away and write to the song and put it together. J: Thats advice to any artist out there make sure you write your own music. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO WRIT EYOUR OWN MUSIC? D: I think its very important to be honest- thats one of the things that helps to expose you as an artist and one of things Brick City found not so challenging was being able to find our sound and being able to find what niche where at. When you start writing your own material you get involve with production Ant: People like Stevie Wonder and Bon Jovi all those artist who
take their time and sit down they have longevity if you don’t put time into your craft theres no point. we put every single minute into this. you can alway wanna sing but if you want to be a singer everything you do has to stop. Every single minute we have goes into this.
thats going to be like the first… our gift from BrickCity to you guys and you can definitely expect an EP in the summer so just got keep watching everything Brick City. Follow us on Instagram, Twitter Facebook and all the rest. Ant: @BrickCityCliq
HOW WOULD OU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND? J: I would say we are straight commercial pop group but we are inspired by so many things and artists Musical Thetare, Motown, RNB. Its almost like a commercial pop fusion.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR MIXTAPE? D: well the mix tape is going to have a variety of different types of covers from stuff we have done on X-factor as well as stuff we haven’t done and also some original material and we are very excited and a little surprise here and there you never know.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT INSPIRE ALL OF YOU? BC: We all inspire each other and have a love and passion for music. Ant: What inspires me is these people (Aaaahs all around from the group) For me personally without these three people I would not be here. Yaz: Before the group Anton had never sung before- he used to sing in his car.- we kinda brought out his confidence in that and I am so proud of him he’s come along way. A: We always used to do these journeys to Manchester- and we would always do harmonies especially the boys in the car and we was like yea Anton can blow a few pipes. CAN WE EXPECT AN ALBUM FROM YOU GUYS IN THE NEAR FUTURE? J: We got our mixtape coming out on the 25th December so
YASMINE WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING THE ONLY GIRL IN THE GROUP? Yaz: Well…where do i start? (Clasps her hand together gleefully) Mmmmmm…. its like being in a relationship with 3 people- it can be tough. WHOS THE HARDEST TO WORK WITH? Yaz: (She pauses and points to Duane next to her) It is you,do you know why because we are both so similar people and we are both very emotional people so me and him clash. WHAT HAS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TAUGHT YOU SO FAR AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT? Ant: Your going home (he jokes referring to X-factor) I just think we have only been together since January and I just think that X-factor that was our first knock and obviously, and there are always going to be knocks- but I think it only make you stronger…
and obviously we are learning all the time… its made us hungry and want it more its crazy. J: I think its also important that you know what you doing if your getting into in the music industry. its important that you know about your contracts, know about the PR’s, know about what you are getting into. Pretty much everyone has a talent, if you can sing that is your talent, but the music industry is so much more technical than that. No matter what knock back you get you just got to keep it moving. WHAT ARE YOUR OVERALL PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? D: Just to continue what we are doing, hopefully getting signed, recording more amazing music, going on tour and literally just taking world domination and most importantly looking to inspire more younger people to do what we are doing. Bascially trying to inspire people to do whatever you want to do that you can achieve it. Yaz: And then we are going to split up and go our separate ways. (she jokes) WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT SO FAR? D: The memorable moment is probably when we went to New York, we have never been as a four piece it was amazing to actually be there in the city of where it all happens in the land of opportunity as they call it.
we even chill together. WHAT SETS BRICK CITY FROM OTHER GROUPS AND ARTIST AROUND NOW? J: First of all, theres never been a mixed vocal group ever in the UK. We all sing. You get your N dubs, no doubts and Black eyed peas but theres never been a situation where you have four singers and its a mixed vocal group. The message we have is very aimed at the youth, generally bout life experiences- just don’t take life too seriously. As much as there are trials and tribulations you have to break the barriers a bit and stand out. And we are so peng its not even funny! .
YAZMIN YOU LOOK STUNNING TODAY- WHAT ARE YOU ROCKING- AND HOW DO YOU KEEP LOOKING SO YOU SEEM TO ALL GET ON WELL AND THERE SEEMS TO FLAWLESS? BE ALOT OF BANTER IN THE GROUP- IS THIS ALWAYS Yaz: I like to be comfortable, pair of trainers, leggings, jumper. If THE CASE? I’m going out then obviously il dress up a bit . Im a trainer girl- i J: i think with any working relationship there is always gonna be like to just chill out being comfortable. a level of somewhat disagreement, however, I think because we First look was the groove look-i got a golden black shirt, its like a are such a close knit family we always kind of find a way to get vintage shirt from one of those vintage shops, zara leggings, and through it and get passed it. they last literally minutes its not reTopshop old school clog heels. The second look I’m wearing high ally situation whereby its ongoing or anything like that. waised vintage jeans, and a pink wooly jumper crop hoody with white heels. bit of foundation, bit of mascara and lip gloss and WHAT DO BRICK CITY DO TO UNWIND OR CHILL OUT? thats it i don’t really wear too much makeup and a bit of eye brows D: what we do is still business, but we go to events chill out, to bring out my eyes a bit. abuse the free bar and watch X factor Yaz: catch up with our friends and family, cos we are basically ‘Do The Dann Ting’, is released 25 December 2013 along with alway together all the time. The time that we do have away we try their Mixtape, from iTunes- free to download. to schedule it with friends and family. Anton: I just visit friends, family and go shopping, hSometimes

TURBO (U) RELEASED 18/10/13 Theo (Ryan Reynolds) is a snail, and he has a snail’s job – crawling around on a tomato plant all day. He’s not enthralled with this set up, and at night he dreams of being a race-car driver. One day, after accidentally getting sucked into the carburettor of a street racer, Theo suddenly becomes the world’s fastest snail. Which is still probably too slow to win any races, but it’s a good start. Paul Giamatti shines as Theo’s pessimistic brother Chet, and the uplifting message never smashes you over the head. For a $135 million movie, Turbo is charmingly humble.
Slapping on the prosthetics, Johnny Knoxville returns as his codger character Irving in this fourth Jackass movie. With Irving on the road with his grandson (Jackson Nicoll), it’s not clear why the team decided to swap the usual skits for this paper-thin story. And while there are stunts aplenty it’s largely built on pranking passers-by with puerile antics. Stomach-churners include the penis-in-a-vending machine opener and Irving’s striptease. There’s also a priceless beauty pageant sequence, but most of the gags fall flatter than a Knoxville belly-flop.

JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA (15) RELEASE 23/10/13
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (U) RELEASE 25/10/13 The second helping of Meatballs resembles the explosive ‘party in a box’ designed by inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader): bright and playful, but also loud, messy and hollow. The core concept of a ‘foodimal’ ecosystem found on Swallow Falls generates some madcap monsters – flamangoes, susheeps – and sets the tone for a Jurassic lark. With a large supporting cast and rapid gag-rate, ingredients are generous. But with no real plot to bind them, the pile-up of chaotic chases, repeat-on you leek puns and noisy dust-ups gradually kills the appetite. Rating: 3.5/5
THE BUTLER (12A) RELEASED 15/11/13 Loosely based on the life of real US presidential servant Eugene Allen, The Butler stars the always-excellent Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, an eyewitness to 34 years of political history. As he rises from cotton picker to the confidante of half a dozen presidents, ultimately to witness the first black man to be voted leader of the free world, his story is contrasted with that of the American Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of his children. While one of his sons (Elijah Kelley’s Charlie) goes off to Vietnam, the other (David Oyelowo’s Louis) pops up in key moments in US black history, from the Freedom Rides of the early ’60s, through his friendship with Martin Luther King and the Black Panther movement. (In real life, Allen had one son, not involved in any of the above.) It may skip so quickly through historic events that it can feel rushed and flimsy, but excellent performances elevate it to serious Oscar contender. Rating: 3.5/5
ENDERS GAME (12A) RELEASED 25/10/13 Based on a YA bestseller, this teen-focused sci-fi aims to marry The Hunger Games’ adrenaline rush with brain-teasing philosophical inquiry. With its shouty boot-camp training sequences and hardened military heroes (Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley with a Maori face tattoo) imparting grim wisdom on how to fight a bug-like alien race looking set to launch another invasion, it also resembles Starship Troopers. Minus, of course, Paul Verhoeven’s preoccupation with sex, nudity and inyer-face violence. Like its hero, Ender’s Game relies on brains more than brute force. An absorbing portrait of Lord Of The Fliesstyle morality housed in imaginative scifi casing. Rating: 4/5
THE GRAVITY 3D (12A) RELEASED 8/11/13 Rarely, if ever, has there been a 3D blockbuster that takes the science of space travel more seriously – and Cuarón underlines this with the opening caption, “Life in space is impossible.” No oxygen, no water and no way for sound to travel, existence in the thermosphere, some 375 miles above Earth, is no joy-ride. A stunning space saga that takes off for new technical frontiers without leaving its humanity behind. Ground control to Major Oscar… Rating: 4.5/5

DRINKING BUDDIES (15) RELEASED 1/11/13 Drinking Buddies is a romantic comedy that doesn’t feel much like one. Or at least, not a run-of-the-mill, recycledformula one.
PARKLAND (15) RELEASED 22/11/13 If you thought President Kennedy’s assassination had been looked at from every angle already, from conspiracy theories in JFK(1991), to melodrama in TV’s The Kennedys, think again.
Refreshing and nuanced, it’s When Harry Met Sally played for plausible drama rather than big laughs; a ‘will they, won’t they?’ with something to say about the complex, delicate nature of attraction without having to actually say it.
Director Peter Landesman’s choppy yet oddly ponderous attempt at a sideways take on this still-disturbing historical episode spotlights the ordinary people directly affected by JFK’s violent death.
There’s a suitably unspoken sense of longing, angst and uncertainty underpinning the flirty, beer-loving friendship between Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) – co-workers at a Chicago craft brewery.
Despite some affecting moments, the lumbering Parkland feels more like a well-researched magazine feature than an involving drama. As Billy Bob Thornton’s lawman says: “This was not supposed to happen.”

THE COUNSELOR (18) RELEASE 15/11/13 The Counsellor is sure to catch viewers by surprise. Some will warm to its oblique narrative, philosophy-loaded monologues, thick atmosphere, strong character bias and jolting, merciless violence; others will spill from the multiplex perplexed. The plot, such as it is, sees Michael Fassbender’s Counsellor (we never learn his name) involve himself in drug trafficking on the Tex-Mex border. Why we don’t know, though he’s about to marry a gorgeous senorita (Penélope Cruz). The deal, inevitably, goes south. It’s not The Counsellor’s fault. It’s bad luck, coincidence. But certain parties don’t believe in coincidences, and in this world you make your own luck. The repercussions are terrible, vicious and unthinkable. An absorbing thriller that favours vivid characters, profound ideas and Old Testament morals over propulsive plotting and set-pieces. With lots of blood. Rating 4/5
THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2: THE GHOSTS OF GEORGIA (15) RELEASED 31/10/13 A sequel in name only, Ghosts of Georgia spins off its 2009 predecessor’s brand of ‘real-life horror’ with a story of a family whose women possess a ‘sixth sense’ that allows them to see dead people. It’s an ability that doesn’t serve them well once it’s revealed their new home used to be the site of a slave-murdering taxidermist. A nicely nasty idea that, overall, is no worse than part one. Yet GOG still suffers from the same drawbacks: obtuse characters, flimsy narrative and an over-reliance on horror clichés. Rating: 3/5
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (15) RELEASED 21/11/13 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second instalment in the franchise that got off to an incredible start with one of the biggest box-office hits of 2012. Also adapted from the book by Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire takes place immediately after the events of The Hunger Games, as Katniss and Peeta adjust to life as District 12’s victors. Their comfort and happiness might be shortlived though, as President Snow has some rather nefarious plans for the Quarter Quell (the games are particular harsh every 25 years). Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson are among the castmembers returning for another bout. Of the notable additions to the cast, Philip Seymour Hoffman joins as Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and Jena Malone will play Johanna Mason. Rating: 4/5
BATTLE OF THE YEAR (12A) RELEASED 15/11/13 Jason (Lost’s Josh Holloway) is a boozy, washed-up basketball coach who gathers a team of roughnecks and moulds them into a lethal unit of world-class breakdancers, intent on securing US victory at the world breakdance championship (that’s a real thing!) for the first time in years. But before that can happen, there are many, many inspirational speeches to get through. The athleticism of the final ‘battles’ impresses, but even then, the routines are marred by trick-edits and headacheinducing 3D. If you a interested in street dance you will enjoy this. Rating: 2/5

JASON DERULO: TATTOOS (SEPTEMBER 15)
Tattoos is the 3rd studio album from Miami borned Pop/RnB artist Jason Derulo. The album definately has a more mature sound Derulo I feel is a very underrated artist. The Album itself leans more towards an RnB edge featuring the likes of 2Chainz and The Game. Overall it is a very good attempt from the artist- the album is fairly upbeat and will appleal to everyone.
balance is unequal. Vocally, Jessie is flawless throughout, on a whole she has not brought anything new or exciting to the table. Lisening to the album it did not excite me- nor did I feel she was that creative. One of the stand-out tracks on the album is daydreamin’ -with it upbeat happy Retro 80s feel to it. On a whole the album is an ok listen, but lacks a little creativity.

JESSIE J: ALIVE (23 SEPTEMBER 2013)
The LP features a array of sound thanks to the creative side of Producer Pharrell Williams. The album has commercial appeal but will also be to the likes of urban audiences.
The new album sees Nelly reastablish himself as an artist- he is not affraid to show his grittier side or Pop RnB. Tracks such as Get Like Me, IDGAF and My Chick Better, realy stand out on the LP- as they have a hard Hip-Hop flare to them. Nelly has also not shied away from collaborating with artists including Nicki Minaj, 2Chainz, Trey Songz, Pharrell Williams and T.I. and future to name but a few.
The Fifth is coincidentally the fifth studio album from UK rapper Dizzee Rascal. The productions from start to finish is polished and every track is likeable. The album featuring the likes of Bun B and Trae The Truth of UGK on the track H-Town, Robbie Williams on Goin Crazy and Will i Am on Something Bad are just some of the guest on the LP. Dizzee is not scared to take risks on the album and indeed he has done, that. HoweverBaseline Junkie and Bang Bang are just some of the tracks which are close to Dizzee’s Rapper/ Garage roots. The Fifth on a whole is a well structured album- with its uptempo tracks-it has a good feel about it and for that it will appeal to alot of people not just an urban audience. Rating:3.5/5

TINIE TEMPAH: DEMONSTRATION (4 NOV)
It may have been 3 years since Tinie rleseased his last album, but it is fair to say that it has been well worth the wait. From production down to the overall tracks on the album- it is evident to see that Tempah has carefully constructed his new offering. The overall sound of the album is maturer yet with a more enhancing sound. The album does deliver and has a fusion of sounds most of which are up-tempo tracks- and definately not shying from club bangers either An added bonus to the LP is the alist artists on the album featuring Ameian rapper 2Chainz, Labrinth, Emilie Sande, and Big Sean to name but a few. To give credit where t is due the album is a good attempt and features alot of likeable track- which in actual fact are catchy and have infectious beats. Rating: 4/5

BRUNO MARS: GORILLA (NOV 10)
Bruno Mars, it seems can do no wrong and his latest offering ’Gorilla’ does not disappoint. Yet again, Mars shows why he unlike so many other artists is an increadible vocalist- his vocal range is flawless- and this song only highlights his soulful ability. The track itself is very provocative in the sense he describes making love like a gorilla with his lady. The production on the track is simple but infectious and will appeal. to most people. Mars is a passionate artist an this can be seen from the track as he does not restrain himself vocally but excel to produce this amazing track.

24/7 GAMING THE GAMESMASTER Darren Lobban
Autumn Gaming session Once again it’s time for a quick round up of games I’ve been playing over the past month or so and to give them their score. I won’t go into too much detail for some of the games because they’re heavily story based; I’m not about to post spoilers in a review, just like how most of you spoiled Game of Thrones ”the red wedding” for me. I mean the episode wasn’t even twelve hours old and I couldn’t get away from the folks in spoiler-town telling me what had happened!
Everything Is Gaming... throughout to get ahead, and although nothing is particularly taxing, some of the quick time events or timed responses to conversations require pretty quick thinking and reflexes. You can rewind a scene if you want to try and change an outcome but it will have an effect on future events. Graphically the game is a very good representation of the comic and the gore factor pulls no punches which suits the tone of the overall story. Sound effects are also very good; groaning zombies around every corner is fairly convincing and the voice acting and script is by far one of the best I have seen. There isn’t much in the way of options for customization but the general UI (user interface) is fine, though loading screens can stay up for too long at times when you just want to see what happens next. This is a small gripe though; the Walking Dead doesn’t let the franchise down and is easily worth playing, especially if you like the comic or the TV show. 8.5/10
First up is the Walking Dead which is a point and click adventure, based on the comic, but with a few nods and winks at the TV show of the same name. You take control of Lee who is in a sticky situation in world that appears to be overrun with zombies. All the choices you make from there will determine how every other character you meet on your travels reacts to you. That reaction could be trust, anger, aggression or kindness. There are five episodes in the first season. To play, you interact with various other characters and objects to either get you away from or kill those pesky zombies (and trust me, there are hordes and hordes of the undead walking around!). You need to solve puzzles
The Walking Dead can be bought on PC, IOS, PSN and Xbox Live from £8-£15.
FPS (first person shooter) Killzone Mercenary is the game that the PlayStation Vita needed and it doesn’t disappoint in any way shape or form. The graphics are based on the Killzone 3 engine which runs on the PS3 (PlayStation 3) so they’re ridiculously good, with a silky smooth frame rate. The weapons (which you purchase from a seedy vendor) are brilliant at dealing death and carnage to your enemies; the UI is suitably rugged for war time combat and there are multiple layout options to help you fight the good fight. The story starts with you being plonked into a war as a mercenary and eventually, you end up fighting both warring factions. To be honest, this is about as deep as the story gets for most people because it’s the game play that shines brightest here. Every kill you rack up earns you more money to buy weapons and valour to boost your rank. You can hold two weapons at any one time (not including grenades) and the wonderful Van-Guard, which are special weapons. You can tailor you load out as you wish and save them.
The single player mode will last anywhere from five to six hours. Once you complete a mission, you can replay it and complete certain challenges (e.g. completing level with only stealth weapons) to earn extra valour. The multi player has its own modes like warzone where two teams face off against each other with different objectives to meet. To be honest, if you have a PS Vita just buy this game; it’s the best portable FPS on any system to date and it is simply, a joy to play. 9/10 Killzone Mercenary is on the PlayStation Vita from £25. Other games worth mentioning this month are Muramasa Rebirth, a side scrolling 2D ninja action game and Rayman Legends, the sequel to Rayman Origins, another 2D platform game. Both provide impressive visuals and game play; definately picking up if you like these types of games.

I WAS A STEM CELL DONOR
By Michelle Martin The call for black Britons to potentially save a life via blood, stem cell or organ donation is currently at an all time high. But for many the fear of medical procedures and sometimes-plain ignorance is a major factor as two why registration among African Caribbean’s is so low. But one woman moved by the plight of Daniel de Gale decided to sign up and 17 years later she got the call became a stem cell donor. Here 40 year old Placement Officer and mother of two Joanne Tomlin McKenzie talks exclusively to 24/7 Livelistings.com taking us through the procedure, her decision to become a donor and to encourage others to register today. ‘It was I997, It was around the time when they were campaigning to find donors for Daniel De Gale. That year at carnival there was a massive drive to get people to sign up, so me and two friends did it, I didn’t think nothing else of it. As the years past, I got married, had two daughters, moved house and changed my mobile number. But I listed my husband Paul as my next of kin and luckily he hadn’t changed his contact details. They (Anthony Nolan Trust) sent him a text saying that they are urgently trying to find Joanne Tomlin. Usually I ignore texts like those, but this time I returned the call. Never in a million years did I think that that they would want me to be a donor or that I could be a potential match. So I gave them a call and they said ‘Ms Tomlin you have come up as a potential match for a patient who has blood cancer’. But because it has been 17 years since I first signed up could they could come and retest me. They didn’t want to inconvenience me in any way so they
said either I could take the day off work and pay for my expenses or they could send nurses to come to my place of work to take my blood. I opted for the latter and sure enough two nurses came took a vial of blood to retest and left, it was simple. They told me it would take between 6 and 8 weeks before I would know whether I was a match, I didn’t think much of it but 6 weeks later, I was confirmed as a match. I was asked again it if I would still consider becoming a donor and without hesitation I said yes. I was then told that there many ways of donating stem cells. I was given information on both procedures and
asked to choose which way I was going to do this. The two that I remember really taking an interest in was the harvesting procedures, the first one was where they perform keyhole surgery on your spine and they take the bone marrow direct from there, or where they inject you for a few days and that encourages your body to produce more stem cells. I went with the first option, as I preferred them to just take as opposed to reproduce cells. Once I’d made my decision on what form of harvesting I was going to do, I excitedly announced it to my friends and family. But a week later I got a letter from the Trust thanking me for my co-operation, but at this time I was no longer needed as they had found another match that was closer. I then went back and told my friends that I wasn’t needed I was disheartened as I had mentally prepared myself for the procedure. Two weeks later I got another email urging me to get in contact with the Trust. I don’t know whether the person who was stronger match backed out at the last minute, But they told me that my services still needed and would I still be willing to be a donor? Immediately I said yes, my reasoning was this, maybe not in my generation, but maybe in my daughters or future grandchildren’s generation they may need help and I would hope there would be someone out there to help them. After I agreed I was given a full medical, X rays, ECG, height, weight, blood tests, all my glands everything all done free of charge.
I know very little about the receiver, all I know is that he is an older African Caribbean male who I think may have been in the hospital at the time I donated my stem cells I am personally his for two years. By me being a donor I have either extended his life or saved his life
The service provided was excellent and all in the The London Clinic in Regents Park. It’s a private hospital where For the next two years I am off the register, They asked me if each patient has their own room and ensuite facilities. they would be prepared to do it again if he needs topping up and I have consented. When I was in the suite I felt very privileged, not that I was in private hospital, but because I has been chosen to What I did take from these experiences is the difference help save a life. I had no fear, no second thoughts, I really between black and white communities treat issues like this wanted to be part of this life changing experience. and this is something I think needs to desperately change. The procedure was simple and painless, I only had slight discomfort. On the day of surgery I got woken up about 6.30am, went down to theatre about 7.30am, and I was up eating my breakfast about 9.30am, very straightforward and over quickly. After surgery all the doctors, nurses and anaesthetists came up to introduce themselves to me, see me and let me know how the operation went. I had a lot of thank you’s from the Anthony Nolan Trust, I had a hand written card from the director. The aftercare was amazing I came out the following day. Whilst there they checked my blood pressure and oxygen levels every 45 minutes, the doctors comes to see you before you go home. They booked a taxi for me to take me from Regents Park to Romford all at the expense of the Anthony Nolan Trust and they paid me a daily rate for each day I was unable to go to work. I don’t think there was a downside to doing what I’ve done but if there is one then it would be that I am anaemic until I build myself back up
When I told people from our community about what I was about to do, the response I got was well done but that is something I just couldn’t do. Whereas when white friends of friends and white colleagues found out what I was about to do, I was overwhelmed with offers to help raise awareness about the harvesting, anything from asking to share my story - to helping leaflet people about stem donors and harvesting. I think for black people on a whole you need to know some one who has done it and see that it is no big thing. We need to get away from the ignorance we need to move from that way of thinking. . I would definitely do it again, I would tell anybody to do it you, you’ve got nothing to lose the risks are to minimal If I can help more people sign up then its all been worth it’

From the moment we are born we are pushed towards a regimented m.o. By a certain age you should be doing this and you should be doing that. Once we enter into the school systems (there are more than one) we begin assimilation to society’s rules, parameters and codes. If you don’t conform to these you are consider to be a problem, stupid or simply cast aside. Looking at things differently is looked down upon you are not meant to learn in any way other than that denoted by the curriculum. This continues throughout the standards of the learning journey. You are graded on following guidelines and penalised for stepping outside of those guidelines. I personally have spent my life struggling with rules and parameters. I struggled to learn to read in the way that my primary school teachers believed that I should. I self taught me how to read through my love of comic books. I loved
the images and wanted to know what story the accompanying words were painting, so I learned through intrigue. This has been my way of learning throughout life, learning through interest, intrigue and perseverance. In the past few years I have self taught myself a number of software packages because I wanted to understand how they worked so I could use them to create what I had in my mind but couldn’t convey for someone else to recreate. Now if I wish to sell these self taught skills to an employer the first thing they will ask for is not evidence of my creativity, its evidence of my academic achievements that interest them. There is much fault in the belief that someone’s ability to memorise text or procedure and complete an exam (that requires them to basically paint by numbers) is worth more than someone’s actual abilities. I put it to you that a trained musician is not necessarily a better musician than someone who has taught themselves through the feeling of the music. However I will agree that an engineer will require academic accreditation. But this is where the mind needs to see in Technicolor and
realise that not every trade is one that requires you to have learnt something. Being that we live in a world where the creative industries are flourishing, whilst machines are taking over the roles of the traditional industries. Even though I have now seen that even in these industries that were built by those who did not conform, conformity has entered and academia is sought over natural talent. So with that thinking and teaching needs to shift.
A need is required to stop telling children and those with creative flair that they must conform to what makes society feel comfortable. Allow us to embrace and nourish those that naturally do what they do and not just think that they are making a refusal to follow. People will tell you that the stroke of you paint brush must move in a certain direction, that your colour schemes must follow a certain formula or that notes must follow a certain pattern. Well I for one as a self made everything am telling you to paint them a picture of man ascending to the highest plateau.

From Gangster to Author
By Michelle Martin In 2000 Richard Barnard was facing a very bleak future. A judge at Croydon Crown Court had just sentenced him to 23 years imprisonment for his part in £3 million pound drug smuggling ring. Named as the principle organiser the judge wanted to make an example of him. ‘I’m not going to try and act like a hard nut, I was devastated,’ admitted the 48 year old father of three. ‘ At the time of my arrest my daughter was two weeks old, my son was 18 months old and my eldest boy was 7. If I was single I could’ve handled it, do my time quietly and slip back into that life. But I had responsibilities and was worried about what effect that sentence was going to have on my partner and children. It was then that I knew that my life had to change’ Born in Walthamstow in 1964 to Jamaican parents, Richard always felt he was different. ‘My mother in total had 6 children, but I was born to a different father. That wasn’t really the problem, it was the fact that all my other siblings were mixed race’. ‘I never ever felt like I fitted in, I always thought they [my siblings], were prettier than me. I was the darkest one and I was shy, I didn’t feel I was good enough for anything and anyone I wanted
to do things to impress my mum. That’s one of the reasons I got into a life of crime. Race relations in 70’s Walthamstow was still very strained and for a young Richard having a white non-biological father was met with ignorance and sometimes embarrassment. ‘My white step dad he always tried to be fair, but it was really difficult. I felt like I always had to explain why my dad was white. At the time it was embarrassing.’ He revealed Also growing up we were very poor I got into stealing at a young age to try and feed myself. By the age of 8 I got caught stealing in Woolworths that was my first brush with the law’. From there he admits it elevated into bigger things and at 14 he was sent to Send Detention Centre for what was his first spell in prison. ‘I was literally the first young black boy from Walthamstow there and on record I was the second youngest person ever to be sent there. Send Detention Centre was notorious. I’m talking about regular beatings from the officers. Ex army guys calling you all the black names you could think of, it was tough.’ He answers candidly ‘You would have West Indian mothers come in
to visit their sons and they would just cry. Because they would see their sons full of bruises and seriously underweight. It was awful’. From there Richard became a career criminal something he admits that he thought would be a short-term thing
‘Gangster’ to Author ‘I came out of prison absolutely broke and borrowed a bit of money from my mother in law, bought a van, some tools and some ladders and just started roofing.
‘When I first go into it I thought I would just do it to get a car and 50 grand but in that lifestyle you get that quick and then you forget that’s what you wanted.
I am a roofer by trade. At 16, after yet another court case a judge said either do something or I’m sending you back to prison so I managed to get work with a neighbour who had a small roofing business, there I learnt everything I needed to know about roofing.
Then it becomes everyday life, you are looking to keep yourself secure and not get arrested you get complacent and that’s how it of goes until you get a big bust’. He continued ‘It’s funny because writing has always been a part of my life but I didn’t even realise it until I got locked up.
So after prison I just really knuckled down working without a labourer to save money, I was doing jobs on my own that would take 3 men a week to do I was finishing on my own in 3 days because I wanted to pay my family back. And in my spare time I started to concentrate on bringing the story to life.
When I was 10 my auntie said to me ‘Richard you are going to a great writer and philosopher when you get older’, I looked at her like she was mad and I thought how boring who wants to be a writer.
So far the response to my book has been absolutely phenomenal, it’s getting rave reviews and even celebrity endorsements. Olympic Gold Medallist Greg Rutherford read the book and loved it, as did footballer Kieran Richardson.
But in prison, I found myself writing and really enjoying it. I started writing short stories and giving it out to people. I met Jeffrey Archer in Belmarsh; he gave me some good words of encouragement.
Life is so different now, I’m writing and I work hard legally to provide for my family. Looking back I realise there was no glamour in that lifestyle whatsoever, you are constantly looking over your shoulder and there is no fairy-tale. No one can put a price on your freedom and time with your family.
He said ‘Richard, If you decide to write a novel I would read it because you have a fascinating life story, he could see the passion I had for writing and told me to stop wasting my life coming in and out of prison. That when the idea for Danny’s Boys came to me. People are always interested in knowing about the underworld but no one has ever heard it from a black East End perspective. I thought who better to write an East End Gangland thriller than someone whose lived it, seen the good and the bad and is still here to tell the tale’. Based on a fictional criminal East London gang of kids growing up in Walthamstow Danny’s Boys is a fictional three-part story that follows their rise to the top during the boom of the 80’s cocaine era. But how did Richard make the transition from
So would ever return to that lifestyle? Without hesitation he answers ‘never, I’ve got way too much to lose, crime really doesn’t pay. I keep a picture on my desk, which was taken at Christmas when I was at Whitemoor prison, I woke up that morning and it was one of the unhappiest days of my life. There was a tiny Christmas tree in the corner and I was surrounding by men I didn’t know and I didn’t particularly like, when I should have been at home opening presents with my family. That picture reminds me of how far I’ve come and why I don’t want to go back’. Danny’s Boys is available in hard copy and E reader at www.richardbarnard.com

MARSHALL MATHERS RETURNS
BY GAVIN PETERS
”Rhyme or Reason.” The LP also see Eminem extremely apologetic to his own mother on the track, ’Headlights, maybe showing a little less cyncal side of the mature rapper. ’For the most part the album feels to me that Eminem is havinf fun at his craft and is not affraid to show it. MM LP3 is just what the therapist ordered. During the 13 years since The Marshall Mathers LP, he’s never lost his acrobat-gremlin skills on the mic does not lool like he will be stopping anytime soon.
EMINEM: ‘THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP II’ (NOV 4) It seems as though time has just flown, since Eminem now 41, released ’The Marshall Mathers LP and I for one am just as eager in anticipation to see what this latest offerening from the potty-mouthed rapper will bring. This being the rappers eigth studio album. Firstly is clear to see from the first cut off the album that Eminem is back and is not going to hold back. The track itself is seven minutes long of psycho-rap insanity in which Stan’s little brother comes back to chop Slim Shady into Slim Jims, tossing him into the trunk and driving around Detroit The Detroit born rapper displays even more cutting wordplay and playful sadistic banter if in fact it actually is. I think it would be fair to say that Eminem has matured as an artist, however, the rapper has created a work that bears comparison to previous LPs he released. Scepticism is pushed aside and he is more assertive than ever. Tracks like ’Bezerk’ display the jovial but provocative insultivness of the Emcee. Ans still show the rapper has a warped but funny sense of humour. Much of the album features stark beats and melodies he loves rapping over. But the tracks that lean on classic rock are loopy and hilarious.

JAMES ARTHUR: JAMES ARTHUR (NOV 1) It seems almost hard to beleive that its been a year since, 2013 X-Factor Winner James Arthur was crowned on the show. A deserving winner- its great to see that he has now released his self titled debut album.\ The overall sound I would describe as an soulful/rock pop album with an urban edge. Arthurs vocal are great throughout and you can see he is passionate about his craft and its glad to see you can differenciate his sound from others. From listening to the album hes not scare to delve into diffenent genres of music or challenge himself. The Middlesborough native first single sold over 1.2 million copies in the UK and 2.5 million copies overal. Lets hope this album can do just as well. Overall the album is a great listen and each track is just as exciting as the last, definately worth buying. Rating: 3.5/5

24/7FEATURE The Sneaker Pimp: Preview Xmas Special
By Grant Richards I often feel that the life of a Sneaker Pimp is a solitary path to follow. It’s not a team game, you are like Usain Bolt, out there on the starting blocks, and you want to be the first person to cross the line to get the gold. Every so often though, I wonder about other people like me. I may be unique, but there are other brothers and sisters out there wanting to win their races. To win that eBay auction. To be in the queue to get some rare heat from Foot Patrol or Nike’s 1948 store. When I do ponder about my sneaker fraternity. I ponder as to whether they are as particular as I am? If there is a time of the year, when those particulars come under scrutiny, it’s when Christmas is around the corner. Now can I come with the Real Talk first please? Let’s allow the religious Christmas stuff for now and focus on how most people, and especially the High Street, see Christmas: It’s all about the presents baby!! Christmas is the time for giving and in return you can get yourself some lovely gifts and when I say gifts, I mean some nice sneakers or if you’re lucky a whole outfit. I’ve possibly ruffled some feathers with the fact I’m brushing past the true meaning of Christmas but the fact remains, gifts get bought for your loved ones (and you’re side link(s)) and when it comes to getting gifts, I think it’s beneficial for all involved if you furnish the present buyers with a little list. Some people have suggested that ‘The List’ is out of order
and shouldn’t happen. What? So it’s OK to write a list to some imaginary guy with a beard, that lets kids sit on his knee, but it’s not OK for me to gently cajole my family into getting me some Nike Air 180s? Let me try something else. Let me try and set the scene. You’ve dashed up Oxford Street on Christmas Eve. You’re sweating up like OJ on that murder charge. It’s busier than the Central Line in rush hour, if that’s possible? Everything looks so shiny and enticing. You make some random purchase from a store where the staff flirted with you the most. Sucker! You get home, remember what it was you bought and you wrap it up, half convincing yourself that you’ve smashed it and that the
recipient is going to love that gift tomorrow…………reality check. They won’t. Fast forward to Christmas Day. Many of us celebrate in different ways, we don’t need to sweat that. Let’s look at the exchanging of gifts. Or should I say, exchanging of random nonsense gifts that you’ve bought on the spur of the moment. The wrapping paper comes off “Oh you wrapped it nicely” they say. Setting things up for ‘That moment’. It’s a split second, but it’s there for you to see if you’re paying attention. A look that is made up of one third disdain, one third confusion, one third acceptance, but one whole ‘This is going back to shop as soon as possible’. Bottom line is, your present is off-key, It’s not really appreciated and it’s being returned for something they DO like as soon as your back is turned. Can we have a go at looking at it from my perspective now? A perspective where I have been accused of being selfish and impersonal in the past. Both of those comments aren’t far off the mark, admittedly. However I’m imploring you to see it from being over here in my Adidas Shelltoes. This is where I’m hoping others are like me? So, I have this list. We have this list? Those that have ‘The List’ send it over to their loved ones, with some pointers, as to where to purchase and the exact size required and then those loved ones go off and purchase the creps. They purchase that snapback. They buy what’s on ‘The List’ and you get a very different scenario on Christmas Day. Everyone’s happy, everyone’s got stuff they really want and this can only be good for all involved, right? Subscribed to my site? www.grantrichards.com

By Michelle Martin This month. The immensely popular The Show Tour returns and once again features the cream of the 80’s, 90’s & 00’s r&b crop. Headline acts on the night include, Faith Evans, Sisqo, Chico Debarge, Ginuwine, J Holliday, Bobby Valentino and Mario. Sponsored by Base Buds, The show Tour is a must for r&b connoisseurs and lovers of quality r&b music; this time round it promises to be even bigger and better than their sell out show in March. But what many are asking is how will they be able to top the line up from the previous Show Tour, especially after the now infamous ‘Jodeci Gate’. ‘It wasn’t all about Jodeci’, answers CEO and Co Founder Andrew Browne when I meet up with him to discuss the forthcoming show with The Show Tour’s resident music man Frisky DJ ‘I know they [Jodeci], got all the headlines for the wrong reasons, but ultimately for us, it turned out to be the right reasons.
THE BIG SHOW!
People were and still are talking about us and we have become quite famous as being the last promoters to book Jodeci. All the acts prior to Jodeci performing, were amazing, Black Street, Dru Hill, SWV, all amazing. Changing Faces did their thing and Damage represented for the UK it was a great show’. He continued ‘Jodeci Gate’ made The Show Tour go worldwide and it made people aware of us as a brand, so much so that we were trending on twitter. Everybody knew about Mr Dalvin’s fall, that incident put us on the map. There’s a reference point there and both r&b acts and the paying public know The Show Tour is a big deal it’s not just another gig now, artists both here and in the UK are waiting to work with us’. But with the emergence of several nostalgic r&B live shows since that boast multiple big names on the line up, L&S asks how does The Show Tour differ from concerts that are on sale at the moment.
will admire and trust. Check out the drops from the artists confirmed to appear, visit www.facebook. com/Theshowtour or go to youtube The Show Tour TV. All the artists are excited they are buzzing to be on the bill’ Frisky DJ also added ‘this is my third residency at The Show Tour and what I love about playing out live is the fact the audience loves this music. For example I go to a rave and I play a set to the end and put on slow jams, everyone puts on their coats and shoot off to go home! ‘With The Show Tour we don’t try to copy any existing formulas’ said the charismatic promoter ‘This time round we didn’t just look at artists from the 90’s, we dipped into the 00’s and got somebody before them from the 80’s in Chico Debarge. To me Faith Evans stood out, as she hadn’t been here for a while. She is a massive name both here and in the states and a her show (R&B Divas) is doing really well. Donnell Jones hadn’t been here for a while and he has got a new album out, Ginuwine is also a good draw’. Continuing, ‘Sisqo did a great job at the previous show and is a solo he act in his own right we’ve even added people from the 00’s to the bill with Bobby Valentino’s and J Holliday. So there is something for everyone’. We here at The Show Tour are all about value for money. We strive to give you more hence why we have 9 acts on the bill, we haven’t closed the bill, but its like the transfer window,’ he adds laughing ‘We could get a last minute addition or we may leave it as it is and spring a surprise on the night’ I can guarantee that this going to be a great show because we have the right energy’ Answers Andrew confidently. ‘We are not straightforward, we are definitely not standard, we are trying to create a quality brand in its own right of which the public
That’s something that I really hate. But at The Show Tour, people want to stay and hear the music and they just go absolutely crazy I really enjoyed it.’ Answers The Déjà vu Dj ‘I have never performed to that many people before. 24/7 EDITOR TAKES A BITE OF THE ‘BIG APPLE’
By Michelle Martin It’s the city the never sleeps. A cultural hybrid that gave birth to hip-hop music, the skyscraper, and one the most iconic skylines in the world. Welcome to the wonderful New York. Having family that reside in NY makes ties to the city that little bit stronger so on some visits I don’t actually feel like I’m on vacation. But this time round I wanted to hit the Big Apple as a tourist. See the sites and take in the cities rich and diverse culture. So with my flight booked with Virgin Atlantic, my quest to visit New York as a tourist began starting from the moment I checked in as an upper class passenger. Immediately I was invited to the Virgin Clubhouse. The club house boasts a spa and cocktail bar as well as an award winning menu for you to try before you fly, there’s free Wi-Fi, giant screens to watch the news or the footy, pool tables and retro games consoles to keep you fully entertained ahead of the 7 hour flight. The first class hospitality continues once you board. Here I was guided to my seat, which luckily for me double’s up as cosy flat bed all at the touch of a button. There’s an individual 14” retractable TV screen showing a great range of the latest films. The suite also comes equipped with laptop power access, complimentary sleep suits and a freedom menu, which means you can eat anything, from a snack to a full meal throughout the flight, The suite also boasts an on-board cocktail bar equipped with an array of beers, wines and spirits and a very friendly cocktail waiter who will whip up any type of cocktail throughout the
duration of the flight. Once Landed I headed to the Bronx and the first stop was City Island, Situated on the harbour front, it’s an island town that’s got the feel of a quaint American fishing village. Famed for its seafood restaurants it’s an Oasis of tranquillity that makes you forget you are in the Big Apple. Settling for the aptly named Sea Food City the menu boasted Lobster and Shrimp all mouth wateringly good and at reasonable prices. I then focused my attentions on the cities capital Manhattan and headed there to go on an open top bus ride with New York Sightseeing Tours. It’s a hop on hop off Double Decker bus service and the perfect way to see the city. Sit back and relax as you pass some of New York’s most iconic landmarks, while taking in the cities fabulous history. The tour also takes you out to the boroughs so you get to see the real New York. Then after the tour I decided to hit the cities famous Subway, one of the oldest and most complex systems in the world, at first
glance the grid system seems daunting but once you figure it out, you can move around the city freely. My destination was the historic Battery Park, a beautiful public memorial park and the gateway to one the most iconic and identifiable landmarks in the world, The Statue of Liberty. Anchored on Liberty Island The Statue of Liberty is a short ferry ride away and boasts a stunning view of the tip of the Manhattan Skyline. A breath taking piece of Architecture given to the US by France, it’s the universal symbol of freedom and the first sight immigrant’s saw when entering the new world. Until you get up close, you don’t realise how big and beautiful the statue of liberty actuA must is a visit to Amateur Night at the legendary Harlem Apollo. Held weekly this night is famous for helping to launch the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Patti Labelle. It’s fun, its brash and the Harlem crowd takes no prisoners! You cannot go to Harlem and not visit the world famous Sylvia’s Soul Food restaurant. Founded in 1962, its celebrity clientele includes Barak Obama, Nelson Mandela and former president Bill Clinton. Its soul food at it’s best, an authentic taste of cultural New York. The menu includes cornbread, chicken and waffles, candied yams, grits, all with a distinctly southern feel. The smothered chicken is highly recommended and I guarantee you will lick your fingers and talking about the experience for days afterwards. ally is, it a must do attraction when in New York. Then it was off to Times Square. Think of London’s Piccadilly circus then times it by 10, then you will have an idea of how Vibrant it is.
The Verdict Visiting New York as an official tourist is brilliant experience, my
Visiting Times Square is best at night it’s here you really encapsulate the mood of the city. You will encounter super heroes, naked cowboys, (yes you read that right), buskers, street vendors, dancers and people from all walks of life all ready to welcome you to their city Next up was a trip The Empire State Building. Until 40 years ago the building had the accolade of being the tallest skyscraper in the city and I had the pleasure of visiting and going the 106 floors up to the observation deck. I warn you it is not for the faint hearted but the views at the top are breath taking. Finally I headed to Harlem. Once a place called home to the likes Malcolm X and Dr Maya Angelou, Harlem is the African American cultural capital of New York. Here you can soak in the history of the African American experience.
only disappointment was I wasn’t there long enough and there is still so much to see and do! But that just give me an excuse to return to New York much quicker. Getting there Virgin Atlantic flies from London Heathrow to New York JFK & Newark New Jersey daily. Fares start from £456 including taxes and can be booked either online at www.virginatlantic.com or by calling reservations on 08442 092 770 For more information about how to get the best out of you visit to New York visit www.nycgo.com

24/7FITNESS
by Gavin Peters This month we have provided you with essential but practical exercises for you to do during these cold harsh winter months ,as well as some suoerfoods to give you that extra boost.
TOP 5 FOODS THIS WINTER... stay health by eating these. Pomegranate juice is rich in antioxidants (more so than other fruit juices)—just a cup daily might help to keep free radicals from oxidizing “bad” LDL cholesterol. effective in reducing heart disease risk factors and a good antioxidant source. Dark leafy greens, such as Kale, Chard and Collards, thrive in the chill of winter when the rest of the produce section looks bleak. In fact, a frost can take away the bitterness of kale. These greens are particularly rich in vitamins A, C and K. Collards, mustard greens and escarole are also excellent sources of folate,
Citrus Fruits, including lemons, limes, Oranges and Grapefruit, are at their juiciest in the wintertime and can add sunshine to the dreary winter. Citrus fruits are loaded with vitamin C—one medium orange delivers more than 100 percent of your daily dose. citrus fruits are also rich sources of flavonoids.
Potatoes sometimes get a bad rap for being a white starch, thrown into the same category as white rice or white bread. But unlike those other starches, which have indeed been stripped of healthful nutrients, potatoes are a whole food that contain several beneficial nutrients. They are an excellent source of two immunity boosters—vitamins C and B6, delivering 25% and 29% of your daily needs per medium potato, respectively. They are also a good source of folate, which is especially important for women of childbearing age
There are many varieties of winter Squash—including butternut, acorn, delicata and spaghetti squash—and they are all excellent choices in the winter. One cup of cooked winter squash has few calories (around 80) but is high in both vitamin A (214 percent of the recommended daily value) and vitamin C (33 percent), as well as being a good source of vitamins B6 and K, potassium and folate.
Don’t letter the cold whether put you off from exercisong, try some of these useful exercise in the comfort of your own home... THE PLANK If you don’t have a lot of time, but you want to build up your core muscles, this is the exercise for you. Get into a pushup position, but instead of bending your arms and moving down towards the floor, hold the position with your arms extended. Start off holding the position for 30 seconds, and add an additional 10 seconds every day. See how long you can go for – it’s definitely not easy! This is one of the most challenging exercises, but it’s also one of the of the best for your core.
DANCING In college, I lived in an apartment with a bunch of girls. We would get bored with normal workouts, so we started to have dance parties. Once a week, we picked out different music and just danced to our hearts’ content.
WATER BOTTLE WEIGHTS If you are looking to do some arm, shoulder, and back strength training, you can make your own weights by filling up water bottles. If using water bottles becomes too easy, use milk jugs. You can tailor the exercise to your level by filling the jugs to the exact weight that you need. For a greater challenge, increase the water amount just a little bit each time you workout.
STAIR STEPPING Stair stepping is a great exercise to do in your home, even if you don’t have a set of stairs available. Find the biggest book you own (or a sturdy chair), put it in front of the TV, and step up and down while watching your favorite show. You may not work up a sweat like you would with a jump rope, but you will be keeping your body active and healthy.
ALWAYS CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY VIGOROUS EXERCISE.

He’s Royal Stand: Majestic King talks about his majestic reign at Spurs SOME £600,000 was spent during the transfer window that has just closed. Had it not been for a chronic knee problem that forced arguably one of the finest Premier League defenders of all time into retirement in July 2012 at the age of 32, a fit and healthy Ledley King would have been a priceless addition to any club. The one club man is now an ambassador for the north London outfit and looks back at his sterling career without too many regrets. The softly spoken King – as his name suggests – will be remembered for majestic displays in the Spurs rearguard. Speaking at the club’s palatial new training ground, the affable King looked back at his early football days. “I knew I would become a footballer. I was confident but my work did suffer a bit at school,” he admits. To that end King, who gained 21 England caps and played in a World Cup and European Championship for his country, is keen to help youngsters whilst on ambassadorial duty. “There are too many kids on the streets with nothing to do. So I am giving back as much as I can to help give the kids a chance to succeed.” The model professional cites his mother as his own early and constant inspiration. “I wanted to make my mum proud and give something back to her,” said the player who captained Tottenham to a 2–1 victory over Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, the first major honour of his career. 50
While that Wembley victory over London rivals was ‘sweet’ there were one or two ‘bitter’ memories for the east Londoner, most notably the injuries that blighted his career. “Yes, the lows were the injuries. Any player will tell you that it is the hardest part of football when you are out for long periods.” There was many a time when in an attempt to manage his injury problems, he would be absolved of training. Remarkably, when he could, he went from match to match with little to no real practice with his team mates. “The self doubt kicks in. With my injury I knew that I wasn’t going to be the player that I’d hope to have been. “I used to have to lie to myself. I had to build myself up in my head. I had a football brain and I had to be clever.
heap praise on the White Hart Lane faithful. “The fans have been great to me over the years, and it is something that will live with me forever.” Now that training, however limited, and the dressing room no longer plays a role in his life, does the former Tottenham no.26 miss the camaraderie and banter that is integral to a footballer’s life? “I’ve not missed it as much as I thought. The reason is that I had five years of not training with the team, five years of doing my own thing. “That has made it easier to retire because I have missed out on so much in terms of being with the boys. “If I had been in the same environment with them every day in training, I might have missed the banter more.
“But I still felt that I could still play a big part in the team and that was my focus, to be the best that I could be,” the respected defender confessed, adding that “I look back at my career and think that I gave what I could for as long as I could.”
“Because I’ve been isolated it has been easier to step away from the game “It has not been easy and there have been a lot of ups and downs, but you just have to be mentally strong. “I’m a young enough guy to find something to excel in.”
Tottenham, still in pursuit of north London rivals Arsenal, have over the years been graced by some stellar names in their ranks. Amongst King’s favourite team-mates was the enigmatic Frenchman, David Ginola.
On the King agenda is managing or coaching in the future. He revealed that he is “intrigued” about the prospect of donning a tracksuit and imparting his considerable knowledge on those prepared to listen.
“Ginola was probably the most gifted player I played with. Left, foot, right foot, his balance. He was all style and grace,” he remembers. There were also the likes of Les Ferdinand, Teddy Sheringham, Luka Modric. “I think someone that’s been underestimated for what he did at Spurs was Robbie Keane. He had a great goal-scoring record for us.”
“I’m intrigued about that side of the game. The club have been great in helping me to do that. “It is going to take a while. I want to see how much I enjoy it. There have been some great players that were not very successful; I might be one of them.”
On the international stage, King gives honourable mentions to some of the players he shared an England dressing room with, such as Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. While King acknowledges those great players, three of whom were part of England’s so-called ‘golden generation’, the 32 year-old was also keen to
