Apply two basecoats, using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen paint in a light colour. HANDY HINT
For larger areas, as opposed to contained panels (pictured here), the Resene experts advise using two pairs of hands – one to brush and the other to wipe, so that the top coat doesn’t dry too fast.
STEP 2 Using a darker colour, dilute around 40% of the paint colour with 50% Resene Paint Effects Medium and 10% Resene Hot Weather Additive. Working quickly, brush the darker colour over the base colour in a criss-cross pattern.

Immediately wipe off with a muslin cloth, using a gentle downwards motion to reveal some of the basecoat, creating a streaky look. To achieve the desired effect, practise on some card before applying to the wall or cabinet surface.

AVING EXPERIENCED previously the high level of professionalism and exceptional results delivered by Goom Landscapes, Gaye McDonnell says Goom was the obvious choice when embarking on their latest landscaping project. To ‘simplify and modernise an old classic’, while creating flat expanses of lawn and fun, safe places for their grandkids to play on what is a steep site, were at the top of the McDonnells’ list when enlisting Goom to recreate their outdoor areas. ‘We were after natural indoor/outdoor flow, and a structured, low-maintenance garden that the whole family could enjoy, which would incorporate different areas for our outdoor sculpture collection’, Gaye explains. From the welcoming formal entranceway, to the adventure-inspired play area for the grandchildren, to the elegant outdoor pool and spa and the stunning vistas it delivers, the McDonnells’ re-envisioned outdoor areas are enjoyed by all, year round. Heading the project was Goom Landscapes’ Director, Tim Goom. Beginning with the ‘raw concept’, Tim was responsible for every last detail and all the intricacies a hill site demands. ‘The very nature of this project required a fair amount of onsite design to ensure all elements – big and small – were accounted for and worked seamlessly together’, Tim explains. Another objective of the new design was to modernise the shape of the outdoor swimming pool, and enclose it within a new frameless glass balustrade and fence to allow for unobstructed views across the city and the Canterbury plains beyond.

To update all hard surfaces, contemporary large profile tiles were used in conjunction with a natural basalt tile to highlight the pool’s perimeter and the steps leading to and from the house. By integrating louvres over the top balcony that overlooks the swimming pool and lower gardens, an external room was created – extending and improving the use of this particular outdoor space, and providing added shelter from the elements and shade for adjacent indoor areas. A flat expanse of lush emerald lawn beside the pool was created by raising and opening up the lower slopes, which in turn promotes a greater connection with the rest of the garden. ‘By blending existing features with new materials, we were able to create cohesion between the two very different types of landscaping: the upper formal gardens, which are juxtaposed with the lower rambling gardens and play area’, explains Tim. Bordered by large rustic boulders, the kids’ zone can be found in a secluded nook at one end of the garden. Decked out with a fort, it has been safeguarded with soft-fall surfaces to protect little ones at play. Reflecting on their experiences with Goom Landscapes, Gaye says Tim’s approach was highly pragmatic and that he listened carefully to what they wanted in order to deliver a truly satisfying result. ‘There was never a feeling of “us” and “them”: it was a truly collaborative project, which we loved being part of.’

WHAT DEFINES THIS KITCHEN? The kitchen called for an alpine feel to complement the open-plan living space that opens out onto an outdoor living area with stunning views of Lake Pegasus. Drawing on the home’s immediate natural environment, the striking combination of Nobilia Sanremo Oak and Terra Black is reminiscent of driftwood and smoky schist fireplaces.
HOW HAVE ARCHITECTURAL ASPECTS INFLUENCED THE DESIGN? Our specific choices of materials and their applications were largely governed by the home’s architectural details: we’ve paired blonde timber finish cabinets with the raked wooden ceiling, while the smooth Caesarstone benchtops work in perfect harmony with the glossy tiled floors.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE? Keeping the kitchen area free of clutter was a must for the clients, so many of the appliances were relegated to the walk-in butler’s pantry. Through careful planning and design of the pantry, we managed to create ample bench space and storage areas, while still allowing enough room to accommodate the fridge, second dishwasher, wine chiller and microwave.
WHAT CLEVER DETAILS GIVE THIS KITCHEN THE X FACTOR? Due to the scale of the room and height of the ceiling, the kitchen demanded a similar sense of spaciousness. Mary Connelly & Tony Andersen WHAT WAS YOUR DESIGN BRIEF? Our priorities included having ample storage for all our bulky appliances, lots of bench space, joinery with a wooden finish, and high-spec drawers and cupboards that not only looked good, but functioned well.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT? We particularly love the fit out of the butler’s pantry. The blonde timber joinery is beautifully offset by a handsome black glass splashback, which is illuminated by LED lighting; while a barstyle wine rack has been incorporated into the wall-hung cabinetry just above the integrated wine fridge.
WHY DID YOU ENGAGE PAL A ZZO? Sarah had designed a standout kitchen in our previous award-winning home, so there was no question as to who to employ this time around.

HEN THE MILLERS secured a long soughtafter luxury hillside home in McCormacks Bay, the couple had every intention of remaining there well into their ‘twilight years’. However, Mother Nature had other plans. The quake of 2011 left their new home in ruins, and, like thousands of other displaced Christchurch residents, they found themselves living in rental accommodation in the years that followed. However, when it came time to make a decision on where to finally lay their roots, the couple felt there was no better place than McCormacks Bay to call home. ‘We consider ourselves very fortunate’, says Mary. Although it has taken a long six years to finally ‘come home’, they both agree it was well worth the wait. With the benefit of knowing the site inside out, they embraced the exciting opportunity that rebuilding offered. Having enlisted an architect and the building expertise of DJ Hewitt Builders, the Millers were set to tackle the project of a lifetime. Already familiar with Daryl Hewitt’s work around

completion, Daryl guided his clients through the entire design, build and budgeting process. Always onsite to oversee the work of his highly qualified team of builders and to keep his loyal crew of subcontractors on track, Daryl is very much a ‘hands on’ owner-operator. Daryl refers to his ‘subbies’ as ‘family’. Many have been with him for 15 of the 22 years he’s been in business, and they all share Daryl’s passion for quality workmanship. Together with Daryl’s wife, Tara, who offers guidance on interior solutions, their company offers a comprehensive package. Laying the groundwork was the team at Trevor Stevens Excavations. Trevor says excavations of this nature are their speciality. Thanks to his experienced team, operating a fleet of fully equipped excavators, dislodging hard rock such as this makes for ‘very satisfying work’. Allowing the architectural design to shine through, Powell Fenwick was responsible for creating cost effective engineering systems, which included designing the foundations, retaining walls and various beams and bracing elements – based on ‘careful and meticulous analysis’. Encountering rock at varying depths is a challenge which plagues many hill sites; but, by working in close collaboration with DJ Hewitt’s team, they found a practical solution to ‘support the dwelling entirely on the rock itself – a vital component of the dwelling’s structural design’. Creating instant curb appeal, the majestic three-storey home features a winning combination of cedar, black steel, schist stonework and crisp white plaster cladding. structural frameless glass systems for architecturally designed homes, Glassforce devised the spider fittings that enabled the suspension of the glass balustrade – which, as Glassforce Director David Clephane says, achieves a truly striking result. Modern homes are often characterised by vast expanses of glazing, and this home is no exception. With a wide variety of hardware and colour options to suit any style of architecture, all aluminium joinery was manufactured and installed by Hagley Windows & Doors. A high performance double glazing with clear laminate glass, the Vantage Metro Series gives a ‘strong, clean contemporary finish’, says owner Geoff Ball. Adding to the home’s minimalist aesthetic, custom-built cabinetry in the media room and living areas, all four bathrooms, the master walk-in wardrobe, as well as the wine cellar, laundry, kitchen and scullery was crafted by Advanced Joinery. In keeping with the specified clean, contemporary look in the high-end monochromatic kitchen and scullery, all appliances have been either integrated into the cabinetry or concealed behind an outer door, and all drawers and cupboards are handleless for elegant, flush surfaces. The horizontal picture window in the kitchen provides a pop of lush foliage from the property’s rear outdoor living spaces, which were completed by Gunn Design. The third floor master en suite showcases a generously proportioned bath-for-two in stone composite, which is perfectly positioned for tranquil views across the bay. Twin basins are married with brushed stainless steel Fantini Fukasawa tapware for understated elegance. Brymac Tiles Architectural Sales Consultant, Sheryl Borrell says she relished the collaboration she had with the clients and designer, Tara Hewitt – which resulted in a distinctive, yet cohesive look across all four bathrooms. Making clever use of all available space, walkin wardrobes in both daughters’ bedrooms were designed, constructed and installed by Simply Wardrobes. UST AN HOUR’S DRIVE from the hustle and bustle of the Garden City lies the tranquil settlement of Akaroa, where the ebb and flow of the tides determines the pace of life. It is easy to see why so many tourists and locals alike are drawn to its natural beauty and the respite it offers. With a deep appreciation of the location, the homeowners say their design brief was straightforward: a simple form based on the ‘oldschool Monopoly-style houses’ that – just like a boatshed – could be completely secured when not in use, subsiding into the shadows. With 25 years’ experience creating multi-awardwinning architectural dwellings, Avenue Homes Design Build was enlisted to bring this couple’s dream to fruition. Operated by brothers Sam and Ben Calvin and their father, John, the family building company specialises in high-end architectural dwellings and has completed many waterfront homes.

Travelling between Christchurch and Akaroa every day to keep a close eye on progress, Sam managed all aspects of the build, maintaining momentum throughout. Keeping his clients in the loop – even with them out of the country over the course of the project – Sam made sure the ‘evolution of the initial concept’ stayed on track with regular phone calls, emails and numerous photos. Evident in every aspect of the build, their meticulous attention to detail ensures consistently stunning results. Offering their clients a full project management service combined with quality craftsmanship backed by broad industry knowledge, Sam says that delivering an enjoyable and ‘highly interactive experience’ for their clients throughout the process is what they do best. This stunning beach house owes much of its flavour to the surrounding coastal environment, Sam says. Elements such as the irregular gable roofs mirror those of boat sheds, while exposed structural steel bracing on the inside lends an industrial vibe, and vast expanses of glazing give the inhabitants a front-row seat to take in the magnificent ever-changing vistas. Dedicated to the pursuit of perfection, Sam says they were fortunate that the homeowners were eager to embrace new ideas and push the envelope on convention in order to create ‘an incredibly special’ and stylish beach house that has all the makings of a maritime masterpiece. Using cutting-edge materials and techniques, with salvaged materials and quirky interior elements commissioned especially for the home, this rendering of the iconic Kiwi bach is elevated to another realm entirely. Due to the harsh elements of its seaside locale, 34

Sam explains how crucial it was that all exterior materials selected were hardy enough to withstand the whipping winds and corrosive saltwater spray. Shiplap cedar weatherboard cladding, stained ‘midnight’, gives the simple form a striking presence, with giant barn doors that slide shut over expansive glazing when bad weather descends. Creating a strong relationship between the house and its natural environment, salvaged timber from different wharves around the peninsula add character to the hard landscaping. The simple, low-maintenance outdoor areas were designed by Xteriorscapes. Preparing concept plans, 3D modelling and detailed working drawings in the initial design phase, Landscape Architect Chris Owen worked closely with Avenue Homes

throughout the construction period to ensure the clients’ original vision was carried out, using raw materials to harmonise with the natural environment. Specially poured concrete paving is juxtaposed with colour-rich Purple Heart timber boardwalks and a deck constructed from recycled railway sleepers. Native plantings that thrive in coastal climates were selected by Chris with hopes of attracting native birdlife, and giant lichen-encrusted boulders line the property’s boundary, mirroring the rocks beyond the sea wall. An exposed aggregate finish was used on driveways and paths in and around the series of boatshed dwellings for a rough, stony look; while a non-slip decorative sponge finish was selected for the patios. Concrete 4 U owner Terry Burgess says he particularly enjoys working with Avenue Homes because of their drive for perfection; they expect the very best from their sub-contractors in order to deliver exceptional results every time. 36

To capture Akaroa’s stunning waterfront views, an impressive nine-metre triple sliding door was installed, spanning the width of the living area. Quality APL Architectural Series aluminium joinery was used throughout the home. Relishing a challenge, Monarch Aluminium Manager Kerry Munro says they employed ‘some good old Kiwi ingenuity’ in the pursuit of the best solutions for all windows and doors to complement the building’s strong, functional design aesthetic. Adding to the home’s high-end bespoke look, design details such as the negative detailing on the door jambs on all interior flush-panel doors was executed by Bates Joinery. Building the stair carcass and external boat shed doors, Bates Joinery also manufactured the timber joinery on select windows to blend seamlessly with the building’s handsome black-stained cedar cladding. In the kitchen and bathrooms, a combination of whitewashed tongue-and-groove pine and marine plywood was used as a nod to Scandinavian

Integral to the home's many characterful quirks is an antique brass wheel that opens the cedar privacy screen on a rack and pinion system, adding a vital sense of 'theatre' to the modern dwelling.
simplicity, which also reflects the natural light that streams in through the vast expanses of glazing. A personal highlight for the owners is the unique trio of pendants that take pride of place in the spacious living room. Designed by the couple’s son, from his London-based design studio, they take their cue from the volcanoes that have shaped the surrounding peninsula: their form is inspired by a volcano’s structural rings, and the brushed brass tubes symbolise the internal magma. As a nod to the seaside location, the cylindrical sheets of brass have undergone a chemical process that adds a beautiful teal patina. All electrical services, including the home’s security system, lighting, and power and data outlets were supplied and installed by Regenerate. To achieve clean lines on the exterior cladding, Regenerate used a Teubel domestic metering switchboard. All other products used by Regenerate – like Arrowhead Alarms – were selected for their quality, performance and simplicity of form. The success of any great building is testament

UST A STONE’S THROW from Hagley Park and minutes from the city centre, Russell and Jenny McLay have enjoyed claiming this charmed nook of Christchurch as their own for the past thirty years. So, when the quakes struck seven years ago, they were determined to hold onto it. Having enlisted the expertise of Cymon Allfrey Architects and Jim The Builder, for what would initially be a repair and restoration job, the second quake, in February 2011, determined that the project would in fact be a rebuild. With all hope of restoring their beloved Arts and Crafts-style family home well and truly buried beneath the rubble, the couple bravely embraced the daunting task. In agreement that it would have been somewhat ‘inappropriate to replicate the original design’, the couple instead opted for a bold contemporary design that pushed the envelope on convention. With the practical, ‘hands-on approach’ of Jim The Builder Co-Directors, Jim Stenberg and Andrew

Clark, combined with the deft design touch of lead architect, Craig South from Cymon Allfrey Architects, an exciting new future beckoned. Influenced by the modernist simplicity of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Craig points to the large overhangs and flat plane roofs, which bear all the hallmarks of this particular architectural era and are just as timeless eight decades on. Offering the full architectural service, Craig was involved in all aspects of the design – from the initial feasibility study and subsequent development opportunities, to the design of form and interior elements, and throughout the construction phase. Craig says this comprehensive approach ensures ‘a well-considered result that responds to the clients’ needs, site conditions and the surrounding environment’. Working in close collaboration with Craig, Jim was onsite daily with site foreman Lloyd Jennings to manage timelines and budgets, oversee the quality

of workmanship, and provide practical solutions to design challenges encountered during construction. One such challenge, Jim shares, involved the positioning of the windows that run between the first and second storeys. This design feature called for the utmost precision when it came to setting weld plates into the foundation slab with rebates in perfect alignment with the second storey – before it was even built. Although Jim admits this particular project presented a myriad of challenges due to the very nature of the high-end architectural design, he insists the rewards of ‘working to such a level of precise detail, where there is little margin for error, is immensely gratifying’. As with every successful build, communication between architect, builder and client is paramount – but even more so when the clients are based overseas, as was the case here. This ‘workable challenge’ meant Craig’s involvement extended to encompass key decision-making aspects, which required implicit

trust and open communication with regular phone calls and emails. Russell also attributes the availability of Jim, and the way he shared information and ideas, as a ‘significant factor’ in the success of the build: ‘he treated the project as if it was his own’, he says, ‘and the constant flow of communication made for a transparent and relatively stress-free process’. Contracted to excavate, level and prepare the site for installation of the complex ground beam foundations and rib-raft floor, Complete Earthworks found that they had to excavate deeper than usual when they discovered unexpectedly an old well. A technically challenging, yet rewarding piece of engineering work, capping was required to contain the area and prevent water from infiltrating the rest of the site. Used to stunning effect on the building’s façade and on select internal walls, black basalt makes a striking statement. Giving ‘an edge’ to its modernist aesthetic, the plaster finish perfectly offsets the granite and cedar elements. Working with Jim The Builder over the past decade, Glenn Munro of Properly Plastered installed the Rockcote Integra plaster façade system with an acrylic Classico texture finish and Resene X200 paint. For a premium finish at the junction between the two different claddings in the middle of the garage doors, a redesign of the reveals delivered a 'particularly satisfying outcome', Glenn shares. Responsible for the structural design of the building, from foundations right through to construction monitoring for the whole site, 44

Engineering Design Consultants’ greatest, and most rewarding, challenge was the design, fabrication and installation of the staircase. As Sam Polson explains, careful planning was required in order to fabricate a sound structure that also looked good. Put together in a very particular order – like ‘giant lego’ – they were able to create a seamless, contemporary aesthetic. As the original house was extremely cold in winter, the McLays were keen to increase warmth and insulation in the new design. So, Craig cleverly incorporated the latest innovations in technology in order to harness the heat and allow for adequate ventilation.

And, in order to optimise solar energy and the views of the garden, the home was ‘purposefully repositioned’ within a separable portion of the site – which also allows for future subdivision. Determined to ‘future-proof’ the home where possible, Craig integrated an elevator into the twostorey home. Accessible off the main thoroughfares on the first and second floors, the Homelift by Phoenix Elevators is especially designed for home

Consuming the same amount of power as a refrigerator, and operating as quietly, this added touch of luxury is ideal for modern residential dwellings due to its compact size and simple installation. Impressed with Jim and Craig’s combined efforts, Russell and Jenny are ‘extremely happy’ with the final result – where ‘even the smallest of details are exceptional’. With the city blossoming and their new home complete, the McLays intend to spend less time overseas and more time at home. n the honourable pursuit of maintaining the character of a heritage home, there are often many potentially time-consuming and expensive obstacles to overcome. And, while Danny readily admits that keeping a tight rein on the budget was a ‘major challenge’ because ‘new discoveries’ were made on a weekly basis, he insists that the outcome made the experience, and the expense, all worth it. The list of challenges throughout the 18-month renovation process included wading through stacks of resource consent applications, careful planning to protect precious heritage trees during construction, and contending with numerous walls that required rebuilding with strengthened piles to support their weight. Yet Danny took it all in his stride, with his eye firmly on the prize. Familiar with the design ethos and ability to translate their clients’ dreams into reality, Bespoke Architecture was the natural choice to tackle this ambitious renovation. Putting people, lifestyle and locale at the centre of their work, Bespoke’s

passionate and highly qualified team of designers puts the individual needs and personal tastes of each client at the forefront of every project. Designing great buildings, improving lives and fulfilling dreams, Bespoke’s Lee Johnstone says this renovation was no exception. Taking responsibility for all aspects of the design process, Lee created the initial concept and subsequent working drawings in consultation with Danny and wife Rebecca to realise their shared vision. To completely modernise their existing home, while preserving its original charm, Lee was tasked with designing a brand new take on their outdated kitchen within a bright and spacious open-plan living and dining space, designing a generous double garage with internal access to replace the old shed, and introducing a second storey to accommodate the couple’s new master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and en suite and a second living room. In the process of modernising this character home, products and materials were selected to ensure optimal comfort and functionality, such

as: thermally broken windows for added warmth and soundproofing, thermal polystyrene installed under the old flooring for added insulation, undertile heating in both bathrooms, and electric opening skylights with rain sensors. Working within the constraints presented by Christchurch’s post-quake environment, the soft ground proved quite a challenge for the seasoned designer, especially when it came to adding a second storey to the original bungalow. ‘Internal point loads are difficult to manage, especially with the added obstacle of constructing new foundations under the existing floor’, Lee explains. While the quakes precipitated significant changes in engineering regulations, which now stipulate that slip joints be integrated to allow for movement, this particular stumbling block produced one of the home’s unique design features: the beautiful negative detailing created by the plasterboard running from top to bottom throughout the house. Since the quakes, large expanses of plasterboard now require the fitting of expansion joints in order to allow for seismic activity. Demanding special attention to detail when fixing and stopping, the quality workmanship carried out by the experienced team at Lance Ash Interiors achieved an immaculate finish – rejuvenating this once tired home and returning it to its former glory. Ongrade Drainage & Excavation provided trenches for services and drainage, and undertook the demolition of the existing garage. Keen to create a high-end contemporary look for less, when it came to joinery for the home, Danny called on Mike McKenzie of McKenzie Manufacturing. Cost-effective materials, such as industrial stainless steel for the scullery benchtops and Melteca laminex panels with a wood grain finish, instead of costly wood veneer, for the island cabinetry, combine with contemporary design elements, such as the cantilevered benchtop made with HanStone quartz, and luxury integrated appliances – for a kitchen that exudes sophistication. Promoting sociability among its inhabitants and increasing functionality, the open-plan kitchen and dining leads to an outdoor entertaining area and an adjacent living space. In some renovation projects where many of the original internal walls are retained, fitting gas pipes can be a tricky business. lifestyle. Discussing ideas with Danny and Rebecca, Dale was able to future-proof many aspects. Making the most of the new light, bright, functional spaces, complete with all the creative comforts their former home couldn’t offer, Danny and Rebecca love showing off their newly appointed abode to visitors: ‘it gives us a real buzz’. While Danny concedes that it certainly would’ve been quicker and cheaper to have built from scratch, he’s quick to add that they now have a ‘soulful modern home with a story to tell’.

ITH TWO GROWING BOYS on the brink of teen-dom, Kim and Graeme Rhodes pondered their options for the future: buy another home or renovate. Their home had survived the quakes largely unscathed, bar a few minor cosmetic updates, and the couple enjoyed the advantages of their location – with easy access to the local shops and a park literally on their front door step. The decision was made to stay put and renovate. The first stage included the kitchen, scullery and two living areas, while the second stage included the downstairs bathroom, laundry, front entry with staircase, and installation of the spectacular swimming pool. Led by Dax Morel of Morel Construction, with the interior spaces designed by Rochelle Foster, alongside Nicholas Yardley – both creative directors of Yardley and Foster Architecture – the renovations took place in two five-week stints. Completed in record time, Dax says they ‘pulled out all the stops’ in order to create ‘these new and improved spaces’ within this ambitious timeframe. Dax says this impressive feat was achieved by conveying clear expectations to his crew of highly skilled, loyal subcontractors, and through meticulous planning down to the last detail.

On hand every step of the way, Dax was a ‘pleasure to deal with’, says Kim – adding that his follow-up service, since completion of the job, has been ‘impeccable’. Dax echoes Kim’s sentiment, saying it was a joy to work with ‘solution-orientated clients’, who were keen to try something completely new. A new and improved layout for the kitchen, dining and living areas was high on the couple’s list of priorities, as they sought to achieve greater visual and physical connection and to optimise functionality. Working in close collaboration with Morel Construction, Rochelle Foster decided to remove a key load-bearing wall that originally divided the two living and dining areas. Entrusting a relatively loose brief for the kitchen to their architect, Rochelle was able to offer the couple design options that met their requirements, while ‘pushing the boundaries and delivering what they never dreamt possible’. When it came to the design, Rochelle ‘hit the nail on the head’, says Kim. ‘We loved all of Rochelle’s ideas and embraced them whole-heartedly.’ Ample storage has been carefully integrated into the kitchen island and wall cabinetry, which was manufactured and installed by Advanced Joinery. Providing all gas and plumbing solutions throughout the downstairs renovations, Aquapro Plumbing + Drainage worked closely with the architect on the design of the custom built fireplace, and with the electrician so that the family can operate the gas fire and entertainment system wirelessly from one device.

Undoubtedly the home’s tour de force, the new swimming pool takes pride of place at the front of the property against a backdrop of Australian blue gum trees courtesy of the park opposite. The pool’s layout and the design of the surrounding areas, undertaken by Goom Landscapes, has resulted in a stunning outdoor living space for this active family of four. Paying particular attention to the materials surrounding the pool, Goom’s Senior Landscape Architect Emma Johnston says they selected tiles to marry with the existing surfaces, along with frameless glass fencing for uninterrupted views of the pool from inside the house, which also acts as a giant water feature, and lighting options in an array of colours to accentuate the pool’s twin fonts. When it came to softening the pool's hard edges, the plants selected needed to be robust - to thrive in such a high-use area. With clever design, executed with ‘detailed craftsmanship’, Emma says that, despite the challenges this small area presented, in addition to council road setback stipulations, they achieved spectacular results. INGREDIENTS (Serves: 2) 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, squashed, peeled and halved lengthways 1 onion, thinly sliced 400 g fresh chicken livers, rinsed, dried and roughly chopped a sprig of thyme, leaves only, or 4 sage leaves 125 ml/½ cup brandy or white wine a splash of chicken stock, if needed 200 g dried pasta or 160 g fresh pasta 70 g/5 tsp butter salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 Tbsp finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano, to serve INSTRUCTIONS 1. Put a large pan of salted water on to boil for the pasta. 2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the garlic and onion and stir well. Turn down the heat and sauté until the onion has softened.

Chicken liver & sage pasta Ideal for quick meals, this kitchen staple is presented in over 70 recipes, from authentic Italian classics to delicious and healthy contemporary dishes – all guaranteed to satiate your hunger pangs.
3. When the onion begins to colour, turn up the heat and add the chicken livers and herbs. Season with salt and pepper, add the brandy and sauté briefly until the livers are cooked through, about 4–5 minutes. If it looks like the onions are burning, add a splash of chicken stock. Once the alcohol has evaporated, remove from the heat and set aside. 4. When the salted water is at a rolling boil, add the pasta and cook according to the instructions on the packet. 5. Drain the pasta, but keep a cup of the cooking water. Tip the hot drained pasta into the chicken livers, adding a small splash of the retained pasta cooking water and the butter. Toss with gusto over a high heat until the pasta is well coated and creamy. 6. Serve immediately with plenty of extra freshly ground black pepper and the finely grated Parmigiano cheese.

Zinnia Paper Flowers Step into the wonder world of Australia’s paper flower artist, Jennifer Tran, to try your hand at crafting your own enchanting paper floral bouquet.
SKILL LEVEL Beginner WHAT YOU'LL NEED + Pliers + Toothpick + Scissors + Bamboo skewer + 60 gsm crepe papers in light green, light brown and yellow + Double-sided crepe paper in lavender and olive + 18-gauge wire + Parafilm tape + PVA glue + Flower templates INSTRUCTIONS Stem 1. Cut three pieces of 18-gauge wire, each 25cm long. Bunch them together and wrap the entire length of the stem with parafilm tape. Wrap the stem with light green paper strip, securing with PVA glue. Centre 2. Cut one 1 x 10 cm strip of light brown paper, one 2 x 12 cm strip of light brown paper, and one 2 x 12 cm strip of yellow paper. Fringe the top two-thirds of each paper strip. 3. Layer 1: Wrap the unfringed edge of the shorter light brown strip around one end of the stem, securing with PVA glue. 4. Layer 2: Wrap the yellow strip around the base of layer 1, securing with PVA glue. 5. Layer 3: Wrap the second light brown strip around the base of layer 2, securing with PVA glue. Petals 6. Using lavender double-sided paper, cut eight petals with template A and 48 petals with template B. (To hasten this process, stack several pieces of paper together before cutting, making sure that the grains are aligned.) Curl all the petals. 7. Layer 1: Using PVA glue, attach all of the A petals evenly around the base of the flower centre. 8. Layer 2: Attach 12 of the B petals evenly around the base of layer 1. 9. Layers 3–5: Attach 12 of the B petals evenly around the base of the previous layer. 10. Cover the base of the flower with light green paper strip, securing with PVA glue.

Invest in the best As Abode’s architectural expert Greg Young explains, you can’t afford not to enlist an architect when building your own home; after all, it’s the biggest investment you’ll ever make.

any people still mistakenly believe architects are a luxury reserved only for the wealthy. However, in reality, architects’ fees are only a small proportion of the overall budget, and are often no more than builders' margins. As Kevin McLeod of Grand Designs swears, ‘a good architect actually pays for themselves – more than once.’ The building is better. And it delivers much greater value. Considering your once-in-a-lifetime investment, and who to have on your team? Here is some food for thought.
EXPERT ADVICE There’s nothing like a good personal recommendation, so talk to your friends or scout out great architecture in your area that inspires you. Architecture is driven by people, for people, so arrange an informal chat over a coffee with a few different architects to get a feel for who you gel with and can transform your vision into a reality. Let your fingers do the walking and check out architecture websites, like ARCHIPRO and Houzz, for a wealth of inspiration and vital information on products and designers.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY In a well-designed home, the rooms and windows are positioned in accordance with the environment, and every part designed with respect to the building as a whole. As world-renowned architect Le Corbusier once said, ‘a house is a machine for living in’: on a practical level, a welldesigned house is more economical to run.
KEEP IT SIMPLE An architecturally designed home typically has a very simple roof form compared to a housing company home, with fewer materials on the walls. Simplifying form and proportion means extra detailing isn’t required to make a home interesting.
LIGHTER & BRIGHTER A house that considers its environment is not only sustainable; it’s more rewarding to live in. Room placement is a critical consideration in order to harness natural light, as is the placement of windows and roof overhangs.
INTERIORS DEFINED With the expertise of an architect, your home isn’t just designed from the outside; all internal spaces are considered too. This encompasses an array of elements that contribute to the overall success of interior spaces, like the play of light, the height of a ceiling, and the way the finishes interact with each other. 80
