The Realm of Possibility
Gerald Guthrie: Animator
Artist Statement I ask the viewer to ponder such issues as the presence of absurdity in belief and ritual. It is my intention to elicit contemplation about many important, yet enigmatic issues associated with every-day life by creating images with unusual metaphoric twists played against familiar, even comfortable backgrounds. Though there is also an element of humor in the work, it is the humor of nervous laughter, intriguing yet slightly discomforting

Biography I was born in 1951 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. My father was a college art professor and former graduate student of Grant Wood (“American Gothic). I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1973 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1977. I am currently a Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign. My interest in 3D modeling and animation began in 1996 and I remain self-taught in the use of animation software. Though I have always been intrigued with many art technologies, I now see digital animation as an appropriate tool for my career long goal to create and readily disseminate open ended, metaphorical narratives. I currently teach 3D animation and foundation level design courses, create art, remain happily married, and continue to enjoy the diversity of my life Close

The story has a modern touch to Retro Futuristic feeling and is about breaking free. The machinery of society and who we are. Searching for the light. The light could be a metaphor for freedom, your own way or just the fun and easyway. Everyone has some time felt different or longing to do opposite from whats expected of you. Or it could just be the search for light and warmth after six month of winter and darkness.

BY VIRGINIA BLASCO
