First it was snowflakes, and then it was stars that showered down on Verbier. In November 2022, this exceptional ski resort was crowned Best Swiss Ski Resort and also World’s Best Ski Resort for the second time in a row by the World Ski Awards. And that’s despite very tough competition! A similar glory was also bestowed upon the W Hotel in Verbier, named the World’s Best Ski Hotel for the seventh consecutive time. Who can do it better? Obviously, no one.
What is it about Verbier that drives its success, year after year? It’s a complex alchemy. Of course, the royal Alpine setting plays a role. Those iconic summits that lie within easy reach, which transport us to the dreamlike Far North in almost the blink of an eye. Here nature is raw, intense, gripping. It’s only natural that freeriders choose to call this place home. And of course, ski enthusiasts from around the globe come here to enjoy, in the 4 Vallées, the largest ski area in all of Switzerland: 410 impressive kilometres of slopes!
Verbier is, by all accounts, a superlative ski resort. Never tired, always on its toes. Enthusiastic, ambitious, demanding, and even gourmand. Verbier is a lifestyle, rooted in the moment, in dynamic pleasure and intensity. Verbier can be seen as the resort of the future, with its head in the mountains and its feet planted squarely on the ground. Between the triumph of a good jog and an unforgettable après-ski, the days are full. No wonder the best digital nomads make Verbier their homebase, from within one of many (super) chalets, with views overlooking the Grand Combin massif. It’s completely understandable!

NEW BRUSON CABLE CAR
Despite staying stealthily off the radar, the Bruson ski area recently received a lot of attention from lift operating company Téléverbier. In addition to replacing the cable car and cantina in La Pasay, in 2024 the area will welcome the construction of a new cable car connecting the base of the Pissevache slope to the Col de Chargerat pass. The goal: expand the Bruson ski area to allow skiers to better spread out.

VERBIER WINS BEST SKI RESORT!
It’s no longer an award, it’s a membership. With only one exception (2020), Verbier has won the Best Swiss Ski Resort title since 2018, in addition to claiming the world title this year and last! The incredible landscapes, top quality chalets, and the iconic aprèsski experience all played a determining role in this triumph.

REGION ART AND NATURE
The Verbier 3-D Foundation is known for having founded a sculpture park in 2010 at an altitude of 2,300 m, located between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux, which boasts spectacular views of the Grand Combin massif. Accessible by foot or snowshoe, the park harbours artworks that encourage us to question our relationship with our natural environment. New this year is “Global Wiring”, a sculpture by Swiss art collective Fragmentin, which consists of a glacial ice core (made of recycled glass) retrieved from a hypothetical future, containing obsolete wiring from a past era of hyper-connectivity. Still to come: “Altis Billboard Project”, a new piece (to be finished summer 2023) revolving around water-themed billboards that will be displayed at the cable car station in Les Ruinettes.

Alp Sky Dive in Le Châble boasts one of the most beautiful drop in zones in the world. From the helicopter, look down over the sparkling Grand Combin massif. As you jump, securely fastened to your tandem guide, the mountains’ peaks and glaciers rush towards you, until the parachute pops open with a sudden pull, and you slowly drift down towards the open valley for a smooth landing. To make the most of it, a new panoramic viewing platform has been installed, which allows your gaze to sweep 360° unimpeded, until your eyes land upon the Matterhorn. As part of the modernizations taking place in Bruson, the much-loved cantina in La Pasay, perched at an altitude of 2,170 m, has been replaced with an authentic high-altitude restaurant – without losing its superb panoramic terrace that faces Mont Blanc, of course! The menu has transitioned from simple cups of broth to fare that highlights local delicacies and treats. A heated picnic-room is also available for skiers who are looking to only make a quick stop.

REGION VERBIER GOES GREEN
Being ecologically minded is a sign of the times… climate crisis, energy crisis – Verbier is planning and taking action! The station has prioritized reducing its carbon footprint by reinforcing station access via public transportation. In parallel, all of the station’s infrastructure upgrades are meant to protect the region long-term by reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact: new snow-making systems that use less water and energy; more efficient electric controls and engines; heat recovery systems for cable cars; solar panels and triple-glazed windows for buildings; renewable sources of energy for heating, and more! Thanks to these actions, Téléverbier has obtained the ACT (Agence Cleantech Suisse) label, and they have every intention of focusing on sustainable development for the station moving forward.

Too many people doing Chamonix-Zermatt? Fair enough. The new Haute-Route St. Bernard variant, linking the Aosta Valley and the Val de Bagnes, offers a beautifully remote alternative. The itinerary, culminating at 3,700 m, revolves around Grand Combin and Mont Vélan, over six days from SaintRhémy-en-Bosses (IT) to BourgSaint-Pierre (CH), via the mythical Great St Bernard Pass, the Corbassière Glacier, and the mountain huts in Plan du Jeu, Vélan, Panossière, and Chanrion (which is brand new and very comfortable). The 4 Vallées, for all tastes and levels
Last November, Verbier was once again awarded the prestigious title of Best Swiss Ski Resort, for the fourth time in five years, by the esteemed World Ski Awards. And that recognition comes along with also being named the World’s Best Ski Resort for the second consecutive time in 2022! Why? Surely because the immense 4 Vallées ski area is simultaneously the highest, largest, and most beautiful resort in the Alps, complete with its own unique collection of superbly diverse high-altitude restaurants. Not to mention the area’s consistently excellent snowfall, a precious advantage these days as we confront the ongoing challenges presented by global warming and climate change. Here, you can expect 410 km of skiable slopes for almost half the year, from November to April.
The 4 Vallées ski area regroups six individual (but efficiently well-connected) stations: Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Thyon, and, of course, Verbier, which gives skiers a vast array of options and orientations to choose from. It cumulates in the iconic Mont Fort peak (3,330 m), the gateway to high-mountain adventures, plus ski touring and freeriding at altitudes over 4,000 m. The peak is famous for its bumpy black piste, which is 1,750 m long and has steep gradients – in some places up to 40%! But luckily, the 4 Vallées also offers slopes for all tastes and levels, lovingly maintained by local professionals, and efficiently serviced by an abundance of mostly modern and comfortable lifts.
Once again voted the World’s Best Ski Resort and the Best Swiss Ski Resort in the 2022 World Ski Awards, the Verbier 4 Vallées ski area has clearly got what it takes. Let’s explore!

THIS IS VERBIER.
SCAN TO SEE MORE DESTINATION OF CONTRASTS
Also on offer is the incredible Mont Gelé (3,022 m), which received a brand-new cable car installed five years ago. Freeride skiing was practically invented on this mountain in the 1960s, and today it is still home to two of the seven routes proposed by the 4 Vallées. These itineraries are not groomed or avalanche-controlled but have piste markers, while avalanche-controlled runs offer newbies (without their own avalanche beacons) a chance to explore off-piste skiing without ending their run beneath the snow- something very few other places offer in such abundance! There’s obviously a multitude of freeride possibilities on Mont Gelé, but also on the backside of Mont Fort and the iconic Bec des Rosses (3,222 m), which is also home each year to the famous Verbier XTREME stage of the Freeride World Tour. Heliskiing is also a highly popular sport in this area. It almost goes without saying that it would be impossible to explore it all in a week-long (or even in a season-long) visit to the area. The adventure awaits!

An ever-changing ski resort

Questions for Laurent Vaucher, CEO of Téléverbier
Text Laurent Grabet Photos Raphaël Surmont
Switzerland.
Can you describe Téléverbier in a few key numbers?
Téléverbier was founded in 1950 and it’s the biggest mechanical lift operating company in French-speaking Switzerland. It oversees the ski resorts in Verbier, La Tzoumaz, and Bruson. We have a total of 36 installations that service 203 km of slopes, a majority of which are equipped with mechanical snow-making systems. Our annual revenue is 60 million Swiss Francs and we have around 600 employees during the winter. We also manage a ski school, a building with a hundred apartments in La Tzoumaz, and one subsidiary company, Services Techniques Alpin (STA), which specialises in lift and snow-groomer maintenance.
Can you summarize last season?
Compared to the one before it, largely ruined because of the pandemic, it was a record winter with more than 1.1 million day-skiers, good snowfall, six consecutive weeks of nice weather between January and March, and no real low season. After the Covid restrictions were lifted, people were eager to get some fresh air on the slopes!
How do you feel about the coming season?
Mostly good. Our resort’s services have been enhanced by the construction of a detachable 6-seater chairlift and a 70-seat restaurant in the Bruson sector, and we have completed the snow-making system on the run from Les Attelas to Verbier. Ticket sales and reservations are strong. That said, we are concerned about the current geopolitical and economic situation, in addition to the announced potential energy restrictions. But we have tried to anticipate every possible scenario to eventually mitigate any unpleasant surprises.
What are your biggest long-term challenges?
We need to constantly modernize the resort, bring in new clients, and shift to year-round tourism. Having new direct trains from Geneva Airport and Fribourg will certainly help, as will having the cable car from Le Châble to Verbier running from 5:15 until midnight.
27
Founded over 70 years ago, Téléverbier is the largest mechanical lift operating company in French-speaking
After a winter marked by Covid, followed by a spectacular revival, the company’s CEO envisions a future that’s both optimistic and realistic.
MOBILITY BREAK OUT OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
In the spirit of developing and encouraging soft mobility in Verbier, Le Châble is now reachable directly from Geneva and Fribourg on weekends and some holidays (from mid-December to mid-April) aboard the Verbier Express and the VosAlpes Express trains. No need to change trains in Martigny anymore! Upon arriving at your destination, simply hop in the cable car and you’ll reach the heart of the ski station in just a few minutes.

REGION SPOTLIGHT ON THE LE CHÂBLE CABLE CAR
After 21 years (and almost 60,000 hours) of loyal service, the much-loved 4-seater cable car linking Le Châble and Verbier underwent a massive refresh in early summer 2022, receiving a new motor, suspension cable, and power-system – a complete overhaul! But even better than the new infrastructure is the fact that the cable car has been promoted to the ranks of “public transportation” as of December 2021, reducing the cost to a mere 6 francs and cutting down on traffic along the station’s mountain roads. It now runs every day from 5:15 to 23:50. And if that’s not enough, parking at Le Châble is still free!
verbier4vallees.ch
SKI SKI TOURING BENEATH THE STARS
There are now 8 ski touring routes from La Tzoumaz, Le Châble, Bruson, and Verbier. And for the most ardent, every Wednesday from January to March, you can do it beneath the stars, following two itineraries from Verbier (with either 590 or 650 m of altitude change) or from La Tzoumaz (710 m of altitude change). All routes lead to Savoleyres (2,340 m), where you can head back to your original departure point.

REGION A STREAMLINED GONDOLA FOR LES RUINETTES
Late 2021, the 6-seater gondola that connects Verbier and Les Ruinettes, which was built in the 1980s, was replaced by a state-of-the-art 10-person D-Line gondola. The new gondola’s operating speed is 6 m/second, making it possible to transport double the people per hour during the now only 6-minute-long journey! The Médran and Ruinettes stations have also undergone renovations and Médran now includes an escalator. verbier4vallees.ch

It’s a feast of truly epic proportions! Brunch is offered all season long from December 4-April 9, for 97 francs/person. chalet-adrien.com

Speaking of tastebuds, any refined guest will be delighted to know more about the hotel’s restaurants. Goodbye W Kitchen, hello Bô! Whether you spend two hours or two weeks here, it’s difficult to leave the W Verbier establishment without immediately wanting to go back. The very soul of Verbier permeates the hotel’s walls – a reflection of the spirit and quality that saw this prestigious ski station win the World’s Best Ski Resort for the second time in a row, and the award for Best Swiss Ski Resort for the fourth time in five years, during the 2022 World Ski Awards

A gorgeous panorama awaits in the hills above Verbier, in Savoleyres, which is a great spot to enjoy unique views of the village.
For a select few, the COVID pandemic actually presented an opportunity for new perspectives. Nicolas Quiniou was one of them. Five years ago, this native from Lyon had arrived in Verbier to work in the flourishing local hospitality industry. Then the shutdown happened. While local businesses were shuttered for months on end during the pandemic, the mountains never closed their doors. The passionate photographer took advantage of the opportunity to develop his own way of seeing these fantastic landscapes, opting to shoot on film and then share his images on Instagram. Success came quickly: his fresh perspective delighted people from around the world.
“I like capturing the pleasure people get out of being on vacation,” explained Nicolas, mentioning his love of Slim Aarons’ work, who famously captured the lives of the jet set in the 1950s to the 1970s. Nicolas’ photos evoke a similar vintage feel, revolving around shots of people enjoying a moment of relaxation. “To create that retro effect, I use Kodak film,” said Nicola. That choice
him to plan every photo carefully, as film simply doesn’t offer the same post-production retouching possibilities as the digital mediums most photographers use today. Nicolas’ compositions reveal his patience for that perfect shot, with an obvious gravitation towards symmetry and skiers that pop against a background of blue skies and majestic mountains. After taking his pictures, he must wait patiently for the film to be developed for the moment of truth. “Sometimes only 5 pictures are good on the roll, sometimes more,” said Nicolas.
A modern-day nomad equipped with an old-fashioned camera, Nicolas Quiniou loves to travel and doesn’t limit his work to the Alps. Italy’s seaside destinations are one of his other focuses, all while never ceasing to capture leisurely moments happening across the Valais region, from the village to the Val de Bagnes.

His photos capture the beauty of well-spent leisure time, with a nostalgic analogue touch. Rather than work in the frenetic bursts of images offered by digital cameras, Nicolas carefully frames his shots and patiently waits for the composition he envisions to come to light. His reward lies in his captured images that exude the fleeting pleasures of vacation, frozen in time forever.
Géraldine Fasnacht
A time for wisdom
Text Laurent Grabet Photos David Carlier | Sébastien Baritussio
Almost three years after the birth of her son Odin, freeride skier and wingsuit flyer Géraldine Fasnacht still craves mountain adventures… but in a new state of mind, marked by a renewed desire to transmit and share.
51
For the past three years, Géraldine Fasnacht has been rediscovering who she is as an adept and serene mother… who’s also faced with a dilemma. As an extreme sports athlete, public speaker, accomplished businesswoman, and new Ambassador for luxury brand Longines, Géraldine finds herself having to reconcile her adventures with her future, her private life with her public life, and her desires with her obligations. Everything is the same, but everything has changed. “I’m not going to put my son in day-care or leave him with a nanny. We spend a lot of time together outside, but to do so, I’ve had to adapt my planning. I juggle workout days, days with my son, and my corporate days with an almost military-like precision, but also with great joy,” she confided, with a smile.
The benchmark of challenges
The past few years have not simply been a breeze. Handicapped by long-Covid, Géraldine has had her fair share of doubts and anxiety. “My cardio-vascular system slowed down. I was out of breath quickly and had frequent cramps. I’ve had to train for two and half years to finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.” Of course, the 40-something year old from Vaud still dreams of powder rides, new wingsuit jumps, and aerial glacial escapades at the reigns of her two-seater aircraft. And while her most daring exploits may be behind her, she admits, “the most beautiful ones are still to come.”
Three-time winner of XTREME Verbier and a trailblazer for wingsuit jumps on the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, Géraldine can boast having numerous exploits under her belt. But it seems like her toughest challenge, the one that has set the benchmark for all the others – past and future – may be that she hasn’t yet found a way to live on the very edge, as fully and as passionately as possible, while always seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty.
Existence has been good to Géraldine Fasnacht, but she hasn’t been entirely spared. Her life has been peppered with a long list of sudden and painful losses: her young brother was killed in a car accident when he was just 8 years old; her first husband Sébastien Gay died during a speed flying accident while she was watching; her protegee – World Champion freeride snowboarder Estelle Balet – was killed in an avalanche; and even Géraldine’s father passed away far too early.
The gratitude of a prodigy
In 2005, Géraldine and her mother founded the non-profit Mountain Line Foundation. 17 years later, she – accompanied by her friend, colleague and neighbour Émilien Badoux – continues to work with young skiers, freeriders and downhill mountain bikers to help them follow their dreams. Maternity, she says, “sharpened and even heightened” her
desire to pass something on to future generations. The ever-active mother is also President of the Verbier Freeride Team, supported by Verbier and Téléverbier, which was created to help young talent break through the competition. “Having a passion is one of life’s greatest gifts. It’s a force that will always keep you afloat. So, it’s incredible to be able to help other young people develop their passion,” Géraldine exclaimed enthusiastically.
But where does her passion come from? From her parents, who loved skiing and Verbier so much, they set up a chalet rental business. “I got my independence and my entrepreneurial drive from my mother, who is both calm and dynamic. My father too, with his competitive, go-getter attitude, taught me that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. He was a major inspiration for me. He taught me the value of things…” Her energy and drive are still there, intact. In fact, just this past summer, Géraldine did two wingsuit jumps on the Matterhorn and the Täschhorn, “two of the most beautiful flights in the world.”
Verbier: a love story
“Verbier is my favourite playground, it’s what made me who I am today. I started freeride skiing when I was 14 and then I discovered snowboarding. Everything had yet to be invented in the sport at that time. I progressed quickly. One
day, when I was 21 years old, Nicolas Hale-Woods called me and asked me if I wanted to participate in XTREME Verbier. So, with little hesitation, I quit my job, which I loved, at Swissair and moved to Verbier to train in between two part-time jobs.” Her victory irrevocably changed her life: her passion became her profession. The rest, as they say, is history.
Then came little Odin and his father, Simon Wandeler-Fasnacht, a world-class ice climbing champion and wingsuit flyer by his own right, and the embodiment of quiet strength. Through his parents, young Odin has already participated in more extreme activities and sports than most adults: biking to the Chanrion mountain hut on the back of his mother’s bike, surfing between legs, swimming in mountain lakes, paddleboarding, skiing and snowboarding, and even a recent flight in the RealFly wind tunnel. And there’s still so much more to share. For Géraldine, Simon and Odin, this is a time for love. This is a time for serenity. This is a time for transmitting. This is a time for wisdom. geraldinefasnacht.com mountainlinefoundation.ch

Verbier, as attractive as ever
4 questions for Simon Wiget, Director of Verbier Tourisme
Text Isabelle Guignet Photo Raphaël Surmont
After the snowflakes, but before the champagne corks, it’s been raining awards on Verbier. Voted “2022 World’s Best Ski Resort” at the World Ski Awards for the second year in a row, and “Best Swiss Ski Resort” for the fourth time in five years, the Valais ski station is gradually carving its name in the history books!
Verbier once again won the “World’s Best Ski Resort” award- how does that make you feel?
This award is a reflection of all the hard, high-quality work that’s been put in by all of the resort’s key stakeholders. It’s a recognition of Verbier’s attractiveness in regards to its numerous sporting, cultural and social offerings.
How did Verbier overcome the challenges presented last year by the COVID-19 pandemic?
Even though COVID-19 had an impact on our safety and health regulations, Verbier also benefitted from people wanting to enjoy wide open spaces and their need to be outside, in the mountains, and free. The ski resort set new records in terms of overnight stays and the number of people using the slopes. The fact that we had a sunny January, combined with the fact that people couldn’t travel internationally because of the pandemic, meant Verbier did very well.
What do you expect for this coming season?
We’re asking ourselves a lot of questions about potential energy shortages, and as a result, the station and many of its establishments have put quite a few measures in place to reduce our energy dependence and be more eco-friendly. That’s becoming increasingly important to our clientele. Additionally, we noticed that people are making more last-minute reservations, a trend that was accelerated by the pandemic. All that said, we know that our high-end clients are still as interested as ever in the high quality of the resort’s establishments, and we don’t expect that to change this winter.
What strategy have you put in place to attract clients this winter?
We are very lucky that we have loyal clients here in Verbier who really appreciate the plethora of activities available in the ski resort. Freeride by day, gala by night - here, everything is possible. Our new quirky and fun campaign “Destination of Contrasts,” shows Verbier in a new light, highlighting its wide range of activities and making the ski resort more attractive than ever.

The passion of movement
In 1952, two visionary tailors from Annecy (France) bet everything on creating comfortable and functional ‘fuseau’ stirrup pants for skiers. Their bet paid off. The greatest athletic champions loved the brand, with Olympic medal winner Jean-Claude Killy first in line. As time passed, the Lacoste family took over the reins and Fusalp shifted into pioneer luxury ski clothing, which was as high performing as it was “French chic” in style. The brand developed a close partnership with Downhill Olympic Champion Antoine Dénériaz, Fusalp’s best ambassador, who took gold in Turin when he crossed the finish line 72 hundredths of a second ahead of the silver medal winner. Now celebrating its 70th anniversary, Fusalp is revisiting its rich sporting and entrepreneurial history with a book, The Passion of Movement, and a new collection that embraces high quality materials, a timeless spirit, and their leitmotiv: to celebrate the art of movement as well as French elegance. fusalp.com

Winter Treats
Something for every palate in Verbier

Gastronomy experiences with a mountain backdrop
At the base of the Savoleyres cable car, a bright star – awarded by the Michelin Guide – shines at La Table d’Adrien. Chef Sebastiano Lombardi oversees the ovens, which expertly blend mountain inspiration with the seas and rivers for the restaurant’s signature Italian-French-Swiss dishes. The décor embraces chalet ambiance in all of its cosy intimacy. A similar marriage between warm wood and refined flavours can also be found at Restaurant La Cordée, in a menu of invigorating regional dishes with a dash of international zest. Another high-end address in Verbier is the W Kitchen, operating under Chef Emiliano Vignoni, who honed his expertise
most notably at El Bulli (Spain), which offers a masterfully crafted molecular dining experience. And don’t forget about 22, which plays upon the clandestine speakeasys that sprouted up in the US during Prohibition, by having guests enter through a hidden door (reservations required). 22’s semi-gastronomic experience is a culinary adventure of local products sourced in an ecologically responsible fashion.

The La Marlénaz restaurant is located at 1,895 m in altitude, above the village of Verbier, in a mountainside chalet facing the Grand Combin massif.
Slide into the end of the day and refuel
You can’t talk about a ski resort without a nod to the sacred après-ski experience. Much more than a simple box to check, Verbier is home to some of the best après-ski watering holes, which are usually jam packed with sun-kissed smiles. Refuel at the iconic Horseshoe (Fer à Cheval to the locals) with pizzas, lasagne, meat dishes, cheese, and burgers. Located near the Médran cable car, it rubs shoulders with the Pub MontFort, which boasts its own delightful menu of French fries, tapas and burgers- enough to satiate any after ski appetite! Le Rouge – located at the foot of the run by the same name –is both a popular restaurant and après-ski destination, with grand festivities to accompany your afternoon drinks that liken it to “Ibiza in the snow.” Whether you say cheers or santé, the apéro aperitif in Verbier knows no boundaries!

Always higher (and always more cheese)
News of Verbier’s culinary delights travels far and wide, no matter the altitude. La Marlénaz is preceded by its reputation for panoramic snow-covered views of the Grand Combin massif, its fondues, and röstis. The same goes for La Marmotte, nestled in the Planards, above Verbier, which is known for its local specialty platters of cured meats and aged cheeses. Both La Marlénaz and Chez Dany, which is in the village of Clambin, make it possible for you to ride sleds back down to Verbier (and you can always Cat Ski for the way up!). Back in the village, next to the movie theatre,
the Caveau deserves a detour for its delicious house-aged cheeses and smooth fondues, which the restaurant has proudly been preparing for more than 50 years. The Dahu, located in La Chaux, offers excellent mixed plates that can be followed up with a walk back to the village or a cable car ride, depending on timing and your energy levels. Lastly, one can’t forget Black Tap, which proudly offers New York burgers at 3,000 meters of altitude!

Welcoming tables for friends and family
Looking for a place to take family or friends? La Pergola’s generous and flavour-filled menu brings a true taste of Italy to Verbier- the spaghetti is dished up in metres (have as much as you want) and served with 6 different sauces. If you’re looking for something spicier, try heading to Gunpowder, which is known for its curries and its extensive gin menu (which naturally lends itself to a host of delightful cocktails). And lastly, if you’re looking for a complete change of scenery, Taratata takes you into the heart of the jungle where the meat is the star of the show. The restaurant’s lush, oversized servings are sure to satisfy even the hungriest person in your group.

Air-Glaciers
The world, as seen from above
Text Claude Hervé-Bazin Photo Bruno Siegfried
It was born of a simple fact – as many of the best ideas are. In 1963, while participating in a mountain guide training course, Bruno Bagnoud learned that Sion’s rescue helicopter could not land close enough to the Trient Glacier to evacuate someone who was injured. “It’s just not nimble enough,” explained pilot Hermann Geiger (who is also known as the “Flying Saint-Bernard,” for his heroic high-altitude rescues). The pure and simple truth was that people were going to die because the only available helicopter was suboptimal. Something had to be done.
Two years and numerous headaches later, Air-Glaciers was born, composed of Bruno Bagnoud, Hermann Geiger, one Alouette III, and a small Pilatus Porter plane. Sadly, Hermann died in a crash the following year. Then, in 1986, another drama unfolded in the family: François-Xavier, Bruno Bagnoud’s son (and also a pilot by his own right), died in a helicopter crash during the Dakar Rally, alongside race organizer Thierry Sabine and French singer Daniel Balavoine.
Time passed… and Air-Glaciers continued to grow. Now sponsored by Hamilton watches (who is very involved in the aviation sector), and on the eve of its 60th anniversary, the company recently merged with Air Zermatt but continues to fly on its own. Focused solely on helicopters these days, the company performs some 2,500 annual search and rescue missions (73,000 if you count since the company’s founding), two thirds of which are from Sion, with the others being from Gampel, Collombey, Leysin, Lauterbrunnen, and Gstaad. Boasting a flight school and 160 employees, today Air-Glaciers offers services transporting materials, passengers, and cattle; delivering supplies to mountain huts, agricultural locations, and construction sites; and – of course – touristic, skydiving, and heliski flights. The one “must do”? We recommend the Big Five, which takes you on a helicopter tour of Mont Blanc, Grand Combin, Dent Blanche, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, the Weisshorn, the Eiger, the Aletsch Glacier, and more, all in a single, spectacularly breath-taking flight!

The greatest classical musicians come together in Verbier
Text Daniel Bauchervez Photos Diane Deschenaux | John Davis
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Switzerland’s largest classical music festival once again unites musical prodigies for intimate performances in the mountain pastures.
“Good music makes no mistake and goes straight to the bottom of the soul to look for the sorrow that devours us,” wrote Stendhal. His words ring true: music shakes our souls, softens our sorrows, and brings people from all backgrounds together.
The people in Verbier know their music. Each year, for the past 29 years, in late July, they’ve hosted the Verbier Festival. It all began when Swedish producer Martin T:son Engstroem fell in love with the station, its slopes, and its incredible views of the Grand Combin massif. Far from the rest of the world’s dramas, in the powerful silence of the high mountains, a passionate circle formed around him, and in 1994 the first edition of the festival was born. Even then, it was modest in size but ambitious in spirit. In a large tent set up in Médran, with spectators filling every available space up to the stage, the air vibrated with the sounds of young Russian violinist Maxim Venguerov and prodigy pianist Levguéni Kissine. In the intimacy of the small space, the musicians seemed to become one with their instruments. The Les Louanges concert that followed firmly anchored the Verbier Festival’s place in the international music scene.

The years passed and the festival grew. Recitals, concertos, and orchestras became peppered with opera, jazz, world music, and choirs that in turn gave birth to unexpected collaborations between men and women of the music world who would have never played together otherwise. Martin T:son Engstroem gave himself a mission to discover, train, and exchange, and created the Verbier Festival Academy. The Academy gives dozens of young musicians an opportunity to take master classes, which run parallel to concerts, with the greatest maestros of our era. Some are then given the opportunity to join one of the two house orchestras, one of which is dedicated to teaching and is known for being one of the best in the world. The festival had become a breeding ground for new virtuosos.
At heart, and despite the many years that have passed, not much has changed. Here, the artists still attend and listen to concerts alongside the general public. Much more than just an exceptional setting that hosts exceptional talents, the Verbier Festival is above all a chance to come together, to meet, and to exchange. Humanity in harmony.
The 2023 edition of the Verbier Festival will take place July 14-30.

The Unforgettable Mont Rogneux
A classic ski touring itinerary, with a Far North ambiance
Text César Deffeyes Photos Raphaël Surmont

Backcountry Touring
If there’s one classic ski touring route that any amateur passing through the Verbier region needs to experience at least once in their lives, it’s the famous Mont Rogneux! Dominating the Val de Bagnes, this summit peaks at 3,084 m, coiled up into the shadow of the imposing Grand Combin massif (4,314 m) of eternal snow cover and glaciers. Along its hillsides, the ambiance is clearly one of the high mountains.
Leaving from Lourtier, this ski touring route is not particularly technical, assuming you are a good skier... Physically, however, it’s quite the challenge as it covers over 2,000 m in altitude gain. Stage winner and 2010 Alpine Ski World Champion Florent Troillet could complete the route there and back in only two hours when he was at his peak – and he did it around 50 times per season! Every two years, the Intégrale du Rogneux gives competitors the chance to test their skill level along this magnificent route (the 2023 edition takes place February 25).
But you can also take your time to tackle Rogneux over the course of a two-day itinerary by adding two stages of 1,000 m altitude gain, divided by a restful night at the Brunet mountain hut, which was recently renovated about a year ago. That said, other routes also lead to Rogneux. There’s one leaving from the Bruson lifts that allows you to preserve some energy while affronting “only” 1,000 m of altitude gain. Either way, you’ll need to be comfortable in high altitude and be able to orient yourself- worth it for the usually excellent snow conditions. The summit awaits with excellent 360° views of the Grand Combin massif, Mont-Blanc, and Mont Vélan. Trust us when we say it’s truly unforgettable!
