New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk I love the season of Lent. It starts in the dark of winter, and concludes with the first signs of Spring. I always pray for a warm and sunny Easter Day, even if Winston-Salem is not frost free after that. We have enjoyed some marvelous times over the last 25 years of my watch. I have been especially blessed to serve such a vibrant and talented congregation. Times have changed. We have sent our children out into the world. We have grown older. Yet, if we look closely, we have new families and new children, taking up the torch from the generations that have gone before. A church has to breathe. We do difficult and challenging things. We rest. Then, rested, we return to the fray. To use the language of the Revelation, “We don’t want our first works to exceed our last,” but just the opposite. We want to climb higher, do more. The only retirement in the Kingdom of God is promotion to the higher service. I see that more and more clearly every day. I see signs of new life here at New Philadelphia that signal a new period of growth, spiritual and numerical. Good things are happening. New staff members have brought a new perspective. Established staff members give stability. The same thing can be said of our laity---each person brings a gift, sometimes to help us stay the course, sometimes to challenge us to more. “The world is changing,” says the media. “The only things that is permenant is change,” says Heraclius. “We are being changed into his likeness,” says the apostle, “going from one degree of glory to another.” I am awfully glad to be here. I am awfully glad to know that the future is coming to us in Jesus Christ.

The Pastor

Pastor John Writes: Our Youth had two huge ski trips in February, as both groups travelled to Sugar Mountain on February 1, and Sr. Highs and eighth graders went to Snowshoe,WV, during the weekend of February 22-24. We’re looking forward to summer trips to Mission Camp at Laurel Ridge and a Sr. High trip to Staten Island, NY, to help in hurricane relief efforts in that area. Middle Highs and Sr. Highs have sold pork shoulder butts to support these trips, and these will be available for pick-up on March 2. During March, there will be activities available for Youth during our Lenten programs on Sundays, and Youth will provide the meal on March 10. We’ll also be helping with the Easter Egg Hunt on March 30, along with the traditional hot dog sale that day. In addition, this year’s Confirmation Class will begin on March 10. See you in March! Peace to you, The Rev. John G. Rights

Lamb Ministry Brings Comfort For the past six months, the Lamb Ministry has been a reminder to more than 40 church members and friends that they are an important part of the New Philadelphia family. Small, stuffed lambs have been delivered to men and women who are hospitalized, home-bound, living in nursing homes or assisted care facilities, or who have become disengaged from the church body through various other life situations. Each lamb wears a tag around its neck proclaiming that Jesus is the good shepherd who “lays down His life for the sheep.” The tag also describes the Lamb Ministry as an activity of the church that carries the prayers of the congregation with it. The Lamb Ministry has two purposes: To provide a tangible reminder to the recipient that he or she is in the thoughts and prayers of the New Philadelphia family; and to strengthen the relationships between those who are no longer regular church attendees and the active church body. If you know someone who is ill, recuperating, or is simply going through a tough time and may be comforted by this ministry, please contact Pastoral Assistant, Clyde Manning. She has a new flock corralled in the administrative offices and will present a lamb for you to deliver or will do it on your behalf.

New Philly Kids Korner! The New Philly Kids group (grades K-5th) had a great fall! We met every three to four weeks with activities that included service and fellowship. Some of our favorite service activities included building shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, collecting items to ship to our military overseas and singing Christmas carols together at Salemtowne. We also had fun at our family Christmas pizza party where we dressed up lots of dads as silly snowmen. In January, we learned about what it means to be a Moravian and went on a scavenger hunt around the church in search of Moravian symbols. New Philly Kids: Keep your eyes peeled for Moravian stars, our Moravian seal, the Moravian motto, symbols of our Lovefeast and other things that we learned are symbols of our Moravian heritage. Be sure to point them out to your parents and friends! During our Lenten season, we will go on a Journey through Lent. We will talk about prayer, service, sacrifice, forgiveness and faith. We hope you will join us on our journey! Here are the specifics:

Who

: All children ages 4 years to 5th grade (our group will be divided into ages 4-6 and 1st-5th grade)

What: We will divide our time between the banquet room singing with Sandra Gray and the craft room for our focus on the Cross

Where: Parents should plan to drop-off and pick-up in the Banquet Room Where: 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and then families can choose to stay for dinner

in the Fellowship Hall

Why: We want to learn about and celebrate the season of Lent and the Resurrection!
