New Philadelphia News trans 4ormation 4 Sundays • 4 Topics Journeying toward the Transformation of the Cross 4:30 - Group Gathering in Fellowship Hall 5:45 - Meal Transformation is defined as a thorough or dramatic change, a metamorphosis.Lent is our journey with Jesus from the Transfiguration to the Empty Tomb. As modern disciples, this journey with Jesus continues to call us into renewal and change. We invite you into a series of experiences through Music, Speakers and Conversation. March 1 Transforming the Soul, Moving through Stages of Life Rev. Dr. Worth Green A look through “the Stages of Faith” as they relate to “the Stages of Life.” Special attention will be paid to tasks appropriate to each age and situation in life, and the crises that can be averted through the recognition and completion (where appropriate) of those tasks. Baked Spaghetti, Salad and Fresh Bread March 8 Transforming Ourselves & Community, What We Can Learn from Hus Rev. Dr. Dan Crews & Rev. Dr. Nola Knouse Beginning with a look at John Hus' own personal transformation during his ministry, we will reflect on how we ourselves are transformed as followers of Christ over time. What are the catalysts for our personal transformation? We will look at the transformation of the church that came about through increasing involvement of the people; at what it meant (and means) to call the church to BE the church. Salad and Sandwiches March 15 Transforming within Christian Community Rt. Rev. Sam Gray When we sing, words and notes are produced by our lips and voices. But the song doesn’t start there. The song comes from our hearts and minds – it comes
from inside of us. The same can be said of ministry and mission in the church. What we do reflects what we are… inside! So maybe the key to having ministries and missions that are transformed is to begin within. We’ll spend some time talking about this, and… singing about it! Potluck Meal, Bring a Dish to Share! March 22 Transforming the Heart Chaplain Rodney Stilwell, Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry In the Potter's Hand, as Jeremiah points out, we are shaped and reshaped throughout life. But it is a unique feat of heart to embrace the challenges, expected and unexpected, that we encounter and allow new, and sometimes unknown, paths forward to form within us. Pizza and Salad Alongside of these presentations and conversations for adults, programming for Preschoolers and Elementary Children will be offered. Elementary will gather in Old Fellowship Hall; Preschool in Nursery Area. Nursery care for Children 2 and Under. Middle High Youth will meet from 4:30-5:30 each session, Senior High Youth will meet from 4:30-5:30 on March 8, 15, 22. Our Children and Youth will join us to share in table fellowship over our simple meals!

Recapturing the Reverence in the Resurrection Service Traditionally, the Resurrection Service, which takes place after Easter Worship in the sanctuary, began with the pastor reading the Easter Morning Liturgy from the balcony that overlooks the front entrance to the Church. At the conclusion of that portion of the liturgy, the pastor came down, and followed the band to God’s Acre. All worshipers, including the choir followed the pastor, and all nonessential communication was kept to a minimum. A Silent Procession was the goal. Of course, that was before we built so many buildings, and created so many different ways of leaving the church, and entering the graveyard. Over the years, the movement to the graveyard lost all form. People were understandably eager to take up a position near the graves of their loved ones, and they moved quickly to do so. It was still a great service; but many of us felt it was once even better, more reverent, more moving, a conscious deliberate act of corporate worship. This year we would like to recreate the experience of years in the not too distant past. This year our Ushers will try to channel all worshipers into this procession to pass through the main entrance

to God’s Acre: Band, Pastor, Choir, and then the Congregation. We would like to give the band time to process to the graveyard, and start playing antiphonaly, and we would like to have the pastor who is conducting the service lead everyone except the band through the Main Gate of God’s Acre. People who have special needs, especially those in wheel chairs will be admitted through the other gates, and once the band, pastor, and choir is in place, the other gates will be opened to everyone. We will need extra ushers to accomplish our goal. If you are willing to help, please contact Fred Flynt (fflynt@triad.rr.com), or Dick Rodden (richardrodden@hotmail. com). So, too, if you attend Easter Worship, and are not staying for the Resurrection Service, it would help if you park in the east lot (on the Preschool/Office Wing side of the church), or off campus, in one of the adjacent office parking lots. Otherwise, you may be asked to sit in your car until the processional passes. We think this return to a more structured and orderly Resurrection Service will add immensely to this wonderful act of corporate worship. We trust it is not an inconvenience to the congregation; but a blessing, and we hope that everyone who reads this will understand and appreciate our effort.
Botanists say that trees need the powerful March winds to flex their trunks and main branches, so that the sap is drawn up to nourish the budding leaves. Perhaps we need the gales of life in the same way, though we dislike enduring them. A blustery period in our fortunes is often the prelude to a new spring of life and health, success and happiness, when we keep steadfast in faith and look to the good in spite of appearances. —Jane Truax

Pinewood Derby ~ March 21, 2015 A bit of information from www.pinewoodderby.org
Take Your Place in History Join the ranks of millions of Cub Scouts who have stood in the derby winner’s circle. Cub Scouts just like you have been building their own cars and competing in Pinewood Derby® events since 1953! At the heart of this event’s success is the process itself - bonds are strengthened as the Cub Scout partners with a parent or adult mentor to design, carve, paint, weigh, refine, and race the car. In addition, Cub Scouts build
Page 3
confidence and take pride in their own growing skills and hard work. So enjoy the ride!
Results that Last a Lifetime While the exhilaration of the actual race lasts only moments, the Pinewood Derby® experience lasts a lifetime. The benefits, for Cub Scout and adult, are discovered through the derby process itself: strengthening bonds, sharing responsibility, developing teamwork, learning new skills, exercising creativity, building sportsmanship, and making new friends. Racing in the Pinewood Derby® creates a bond between a Cub Scout and all those who have raced before, as well as those who will follow to participate in this same tradition. Walk up to any Boy Scout - youth or adult; if he participated in a derby, his memories will resemble those of all other participants in the history of the event. Sportsmanship - The Big Win The father of the Pinewood Derby®, Donald Murphy, described his vision for the event to Scouting magazine in 1999: “I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer fatherson relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition.” As Cub Scouts learn the skill of good sportsmanship, they are better able to recognize and appreciate the new skills they’ve acquired, to show respect to all those involved, and to experience the fun and excitement of competition. History The first Pinewood Derby® was held in 1953 by Cub Scout Pack 280C of Manhattan Beach, California, operated by the North American Aviation Management Club. It was the brainchild of Cubmaster Donald Murphy. The derby, publicized in Boys’ Life in October 1954, was an instant and enduring hit. The magazine offered plans for the track and car, which featured “four wheels, four nails, and three blocks of wood.” The rules of the very first race stated: “The Derby is run in heats - two to four cars starting by gravity from a standstill on a track and run down a ramp to a finish line unaided. The track is an inclined ramp with wood strips down the center to guide the cars.” The cars still roll that way today.

Missions and Social Concerns
At our February meeting, Angelica Regalado shared her story of traveling to Israel with students from Wake Forest University Divinity School where she is a student. Angelica’s vision is to be able to bridge cultures together through the Gospel. She is originally from Peru and her fluent Spanish helps her in many ways. Our own Hayley Geis will be traveling with UNC Greensboro College Life Group to Pico Escondido, Dominican Republic from March 7-14. Their jobs will range from carpentry to IT services to evangelizing to leading teams or teaching art classes to the community. Their work will be at Camp Pico Escondido which is very similar to Laurel Ridge. Youth experience Christ for the first time and many make lifetime commitments. Our committee is supporting Hayley with $300.00 short term funds. Please keep this team in your prayers. In 2013, 619 children and leaders attended the camp. Monies dispersed this month: Braimas in Sierra Leone $2000 Kevin and Charity Manous $670 Steve Marx (Mission Aviation Fellowship) $1000 Our Committee provided Lunch Bags for the City of Dwellings in February. Our Mission Moment on March 8 will highlight the RCC-Regional Council of churches. We are a member of the Yadkin View Council and are grouped with Clemmons Moravian, Macedonia Moravian, New Hope, Unity Moravian. What is RCC? The objective of this council is to enable communications, build unity, and expand community throughout the Province. The RCC was created to help congregations share strengths and best practices, provide Board of World Mission with input about their needs and to participate in shared ministries and serve as a conduit for communication among churches. Our RCC representatives at NPMC are Nancy Renn and Scott Huddleston. I am sure they would be open to any questions you might have about the RCC. As we enter the Lenten season let us remember

Galatians 5:13-14: “ You my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather serve one another in love.” We hope to see you at our March 8 meeting, 5PM in the Banquet Room. We are an open committee and everyone is welcome!
Bells of Joy
Bells of Joy will play “Reflection on Holy Manna,” an expanded version of the old hymn “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” at the 11:10 service on March 22 during Lent. The arrangement by Sandra Eithun adds to the hymn a beginning and ending that uses the singing bell technique. Bells are played by rubbing a wooden mallet around the rim of the bell until it begins to hum. Listen for the melodic hum of these beautiful bells as we begin to play the hymn. Handchimes will also be played, and Mona Ketner will play the flute for this arrangement. The early American hymn, “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” written by George Atkins, a Methodist minister who was born in England and who died in Virginia, calls on Christians to pray for the Holy Spirit to be present at our worship and ends with these hopeful images: Let us love our God supremely, Let us love each other, too; Let us love and pray for sinners, Till our God makes all things new. Then He’ll call us home to heaven, At His table we’ll sit down; Christ will gird Himself, and serve us With sweet manna all around. We hope that you hear the blessings hoped for, the “sweet manna,” as we share this hymn with you. If you are a former handbell ringer or you just love the beautiful music of the bells and chimes and would be interested in learning how to play, please contact Donna Cartner, director, at bells@newphilly.org. Bells of Joy practices each Wednesday at 5 p.m. and plays for worship each month from September to May and for special occasions.
