New Philadelphia News September is upon us! Whether driven by weather

or school calendars, the slide into Fall is one that leads us easily into routines and rituals. For some this may bring tailgating, for others homework, or maybe both. But all these things flow well into the concepts of harvest time, gathering in from the joys of Summer and preparing the soil for next things. Gregory Norbert offers these words to describe the season of harvest. “A time for kneading love’s leaven well, to open up and go beyond ourselves; and as we reach for this moment, we know that love is a gift born in care.”

This is a time to open ourselves and discover new things or uncover things in places that we haven’t explored before even though they are familiar. For children and youth it is the very tangible forming of new community in their class groupings and schedule patterns. For others of us, it may be engaging in a new small group or fresh volunteer commitment. Or it may simply be viewing the comfort of long-standing community in the light of a new season and the projects of that time together.

Fall Education SundayKick-Off On September 13, Education Sunday, we will celebrate some of our many opportunities to grow in the fertile soil of community this year. Throughout September, consider what might offer you fresh bread in this harvest season and get involved in some of these opportunities.

Stephen Ministry to Begin This Fall Stephen Ministry is a unique training program that equips participants to become effective caregivers. The 50 hours of training includes general subjects such as listening, creating healthy relationships, establishing boundaries, and using Christian resources in caregiving. Training also covers more specific topics such as ministering to the divorced, hospitalized, bereaved, and aging. A Stephen Ministry information session will be held on Sunday, September 13 in the church parlor at 10AM. This is an opportunity for you to come and learn more about this important lay ministry and its benefits for those who receive care as well as for the caregivers. If you have already made a commitment to Stephen Ministry, you may pick up an application at this time. Stephen Ministry training begins on Sunday, September 20 under the direction of Cynthia Fearrington (336-945-6494) who has just completed training as a Stephen Leader. The training will take place during the Sunday School hour and will conclude in May. All are welcome to be come and learn more about becoming a Stephen Minister and providing care to individuals facing life challenges or difficulties.

This is the main thing that has not changed about the South, in my opinion--that will never change. We Southerners love a story, and will tell you anything. Narrative is as necessary to us as air. We use the story to transmit information as well as to while away the time. In periods of stress and change, the story becomes even more important. In the telling of it we discover or affirm who we are, why we exist, what we should do. The story brings order and delight. Its form is inherently pleasing, and deeply satisfying to us. Because it has a beginning, middle, and end, it gives a recognizable shape to the muddle and chaos of our lives. ~ Contemporary Southern author, Lee Smith If these comments intrigue you or make you smile in agreement, please consider becoming part of a new book club devoted solely to Southern literature. Led by Kay Windsor, the group will read works by well-known 20th century and contemporary writers including William Faulkner, Eudora Welty and Fred Chappell. The authors selected reflect the world in which we live through their stories. The group will typically meet on the fourth Thursday of each month beginning in September and ending next June. There will be no meeting in December. The first book is Saving Grace by Lee Smith. Our first meeting will take place Thursday, September 24 in the church parlor. If you are interested in joining the group or would like more information, please contact Clyde Manning.

17, when our guest speaker will be Tom Brown, noted heritage apple expert. For the past 18 years he has devoted his efforts to preserving lost apples and has found over 1000 varieties.

Coffee will be served at 10AM followed by our program at 10:30AM and then lunch. Please RSVP to the Church office by Monday, September 14. All are welcome. Bring a friend.

At our July 9 meeting 3 of our youth and Ross McNeil shared slides and stories of their summer mission camp in West Virginia. They not only did physical work but built special relationships with the families they helped. It was a very rewarding trip for all involved. We had a visit from Cynthia Rader Geyer from Bethlehem Pennsylvania who will be traveling to Cuba for a 10-day camp at the Catholic Facility. The children attending the camp will be Moravians and she hopes there will be about 50-60 youth. She will be taking 16 youth with her from the US. The cost of the camp is $40 per child. Our committee voted to donate $500 to help the Cuba youth attend. It is 10 days filled with fellowship and Bible studies. Michael Tesh and family from Ray Of Hope in Kenya will be visiting in the fall. Our committee voted to help with their traveling expenses in the amount of $500. Our disbursements for August are • $670 for Kevin and Charity Manous, • $1000 to Winston Salem Street School. We will again hold our Mission Expo in October at Open Door Lunch. The children from South Fork School will sing for us, so please mark October 7 on your calendar! We will have displays from local agencies we support and for our foreign missionaries. We hope to have a good attendance and there will be opportunities for you to sign up to volunteer. The NPMC Chef ’s Crew will be cooking BBQ. The WS Rescue Mission will have a Fall Jamboree on October 17 from 1-7PM in Yadkinville. There will be live bands, family rides and attractions. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the gate and children under 3 get in free. Volunteer opportunities for Rescue Mission include summer volunteers,

Our next meeting will be September 13 at 5PM in the Banquet Room, guest speaker will be Phil Raeford who works with Indians in Mexico. Come and hear about his ministry. Thank you for your continued support!
