New Philadelphia News A Call to Discipleship The influence of the book of Ecclesiastes on popular culture is most obvious in the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s. The song enjoyed international acclaim in 1965 when sung by the rock band, The Byrds, and it hit #1 on the Hot 100 chart in December of that same year. The song is distinctive for being the #1 song with the oldest lyrics, which come from chapter 3 of the book most scholars attribute to King Solomon: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes will likely speak to the human condition as long as we inhabit the planet. As the book’s writer, identified only as “Teacher” proclaims from the opening chapter, all in life is “vanity”; all in life is meaningless. For twelve chapters he leads us on a “tour” of life, seeking meaning in physical pleasure and in work. He concludes that they are lacking. So is wealth, which leaves people wanting more. So is wisdom, for who can fully comprehend what goes on “under the sun”? Finally, in chapter 12, the Teacher reaches his ultimate conclusion: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (12:13). The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook explains it this way: “Ecclesiastes tells us that we will not find meaning in life apart from serving God. Regardless of how smart we are or how hard we work, it is only as we serve God that life takes on significant meaning.” What does that mean to us as Moravians? What does it mean to our church as we gear up for a new year of ministry to our world, to our community and to each other? Let’s start with where Ecclesiastes ends: Our meaning – as a church, as brothers and sisters, as Christians – is found through our service. Another way of saying it is this: Our purpose, our meaning, is found in discipleship. This fall, we’ll be emphasizing discipleship in several ways. A display being developed for our Commons

Area will proclaim our commitment to discipleship with three messages: Serve Like Jesus, Love Like Jesus and Live Like Jesus. The messages will be enhanced with images of our congregation’s members doing just that: serving, loving and living like Jesus. Our discipleship will also be the theme of a special campaign that calls us into even more intense and intentional action as we study, work and imagine together what more we might do to serve, love and live like Jesus. Lastly, you’ll hear about discipleship from the pulpit as we discover that discipleship is a choice made by all who hear the voice of our Chief Elder – our lamb – who has conquered and commands, follow me.

Christy’s PFRRKWJ their neighborhoods! This is a great family activity with a simple way to enjoy supper, fellowship and fun Corner together! if they don’t get the chance to see many children visit

Fall is here!

And with Fall comes CROPWalk... Our annual local CROPWalk is one of the largest in the country and our children, youth and families will be a part of it on October 18! CROPWalks raise funds for local food outreach agencies and Church World Service’s international food security programs. 25% of funds raised in Forsyth county are split each year between Sunnyside Ministry and Crisis Control Ministry, helping these agencies meet our local needs. One of Church World Service’s goals is to work with communities to find ways to feed themselves sustainably and nutritiously throughout the world. Our children and youth will collect a special offering on October 18 during both services of worship to support their participation in the walk. If you have a child or youth who’d like to help collect this offering, send an email to me - christy@newphilly.org by October 15. Checks can be made out directly toward CWS/CROP and contributions are eligible for many corporate matching gift programs. Details: Participating children & families (New Philly Kids) meet at Fellowship Hall entrance at 1:45pm. Carpool to downtown, walk begins at 2:30pm. Return to church at 4pm. Church Council will begin at 4:30pm. Children will have pizza and a movie to enjoy during Council meeting.

Trunk or Treat

On October 30, we hope families and those young at heart will join us for the Trunk or Treat from 5:30-7:30pm in our parking lot and picnic shelter! There will be a hot dog supper fundraiser for New Philadelphia Preschool, activity stations and decorated trunks for everyone to enjoy. If you would like to volunteer to decorate your vehicle and distribute treats or are willing to lead an activity station, be sure to contact me, christy@newphilly.org or Laura Long, laura_s_long@yahoo.com. Many folks have enjoyed this trick or treat experience in recent years, especially

New Philly Kids will also meet on November 1 & 15, from 4-5:30pm, these will be our times for our Operation Christmas Child project work. Parents of New Philly Kids are invited to a 2 part series with Ellen Fox, a member of our congregation and a licensed Marriage and Family Counselor, during these November New Philly Kids sessions.

Kids of Faith? New to the Pew?

Where did Kids of Faith go? What is New to the Pew? One of the goals when I joined the staff at New Philadelphia, was to help the children gain an understanding of what worship was and how they can participate in it. One of the best ways for children to do this is simply to be a part of it, even with their wiggles and activities to work on quietly in the pew. As our youngest children have learned through Godly Play during Children’s Worship, and we’ve worked with the older ones in Kids of Faith to develop an understanding of why we do some of the things we do; the need for a monthly Kids of Faith offering seems less urgent. Now we recognize that as children “graduate” from Godly Play as 2nd graders, they are ready to talk a little about what they’ve learned in Children’s Worship and how they can apply that as they worship with the rest of the congregation. And so we will offer each Fall a series of opportunities to help them make this transition. It will happen at the same time as Children’s Worship, but we will gather in the library and talk about the Lord’s Prayer, liturgy as the prayers of God’s people, some of the vocabulary of faith in ways to help them be more a part of what happens when we worship together. Our delayed start is planned for October 11! Again, childhood development is a flexible thing, and I ask parents to consider what is best for their child. If they feel a little more time in Children’s Worship or joining in New to the Pew beyond 2nd grade is valuable, just be in conversation with me about this. And, should sensitive topics come up in worship, we will always welcome the children who come to greet that day’s Children’s Worship leaders.
