New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk
The Congregational Council was convened by the pastor, who led the assembly in prayer, asking God to lead by His Spirit. Sister Brittany Huddleston served as Congregational Council Secretary. The Business of Elections 1.The Nominations Committee reported a slate of six names for four positions on the board of Elders: Becky Beauchamp, Evon Crooks, Susan Cook, Bill Donnell, Denise Hunt and Bob McReynolds. 2.The following people received a majority of all votes cast: Becky Beauchamp, Evon Crooks, Sr., Susan Cook and Bob McReynolds. We appreciate Denise Hunt and Bill Donnell standing for election, and look forward to serving with them in the future. 3.The Nominations Committee reported a slate of four names for four positions on the board of Trustees: Charles Galloway, Michael Crotts, Ron Vogler, Smitty Welborn. The slate was accepted and nominations closed. The Council unanimously approved all four names. 4.The Nominations Committee requested nominations for the two lay representatives for the Yadkin Valley RCC. Jane Shore and Tim Ward were nominated, and unanimously approved for the positions. 5.The Nominations Committee requested nominations for Church Council Secretary. Nancy Holland was nominated and unanimously approved. We failed to elect an alternate. Committee Reports The Church Council heard Committee Reports from various committees, and individuals, including: 1.The Christian Education Committee 2.Connections Ministry Team 3.Missions and Social Concerns Committee. Activities of the Joint Board The Pastor gave a brief report on the activities of the Joint Board, including the hiring of Michael Crane, and the call of the Rev. Joe Moore. Worship Hymnal The Pastor asked the Council for permission for the Joint Board to explore the purchase of a new Worship Hymnal, popularly known as the “blue hymnal.” This was done, because the Council had twice voted to not
to buy the new hymnal. The council asked the Joint Board to explore the options that are available to us, and bring a recommendation back to a Special Church Council to be held after the first of the year. Rules and Regulations The Pastor brought the new Rules and Regulations before the Council, thanking several members for their contributions, including but not limited to, Bruce Bradley, Bill Sides, Marie Rodden, Joey Transou, and Earl Wall. The new Rules and Regulations will accomplish three things. 1.I will bring our Rules and Regulations into harmony with the Book of Order of the Southern Province. 2.It will bring our Rules and Regulations in harmony with present practice. 3.It will improve our institutional memory, and assist our boards and committees in performance of their duties. It was determined that the only controversial part of the new Rules and Regulations was whether we should establish a minimum age at which Communicant Members can cast their vote and hold office. The Council was presented with three options. A discussion was held, and the Council decided that all Communicant Members in good standing have the right to vote, and those who are 18 years of age and older have the right to hold office as an Elder, Trustee, RCC Representative, Synod Delegate, or such other office elected by the Congregational Council. The council agreed that it was both unwise and unfair to ask people under 18 years of age to represent the church to the outside world, as when the board approves a contract to build a new building, or to repair an existing building.
The new Rules and Regulations were unanimously approved by a voice vote. They can be found online at: http://newphilly.org/pdf/2016.npmc.constitution.pdf. Additional business was called for, and there was none. Adjournment was moved, and the Council adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Worth Green Pastor

Missions and Social Concerns Thirst Missions: Elizabeth Barnard from Thirst Missions gave a very informative presentation on how Thirst Missions can help guide and plan mission trips to Alaska, Belize and England. Thirst Missions was founded in 2003 in St. Paul Minnesota. Their primary goal is to help churches in the US plan and execute mission trips by pairing them with churches in Alaska, Belize and England. The mission committee evaluated the need for this service and determined that there are no current needs due to connections with the Board of World Missions and other provinces. However, if there are other members in the congregation that are interested, we will provide Thirst Missions contact information. Bells of Joy Bells of Joy and New Philadelphia welcome Terri Queen as our new handbell director. Terri began work with the handbell choir in August, and has led practices and joyful ringing in our worship services in September and October. Bells of Joy plays for worship on the fourth Sunday of each month, alternating between first and second services and also plays for special services including all Christmas love feasts. Terri is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in music education and has taught private piano and voice for the past 38 years. She began playing handbells from elementary school through high school and continued as an adult, ringing in several church advanced ringing groups and then began directing a handbell choir at Friendly Avenue Baptist in Greensboro. Since the family’s move to Advance in 2006, Terri has served as Director of Music at two churches, including directing both the chancel choir and the handbell choirs. She has also attended multiple bell conferences, workshops and training sessions, learning new techniques. Terri and husband, Allen live in Advance and formerly lived in Farragut, Tennessee. They have three grown children. “God gave us music that we might pray without words” is a favorite quotation of Terri’s. Anyone with an interest in the bell ministry at New Philly can contact Terri at taqueen@earthlink.net or 336-998-4160.
Healing Through Faith
New Women’s Ministry Beginning at NPMC A new women’s ministry is being formed for those who have experienced a devastating loss in their lives. This is not a grief share program but more of a women’s support and fellowship group. We will meet once a month beginning on Tuesday, November 1 at 6 p.m. in the church parlor.
Page 6
At the November 1 meeting, we will share refreshments, have a time for getting to know one another, offer a short devotion and discussion. Our goal is to develop friendships to encourage and support one another. Our hope is to plan enjoyable activities such as dinner, movies, or service projects to offer fellowship. The group will be held to a high standard of confidentiality, providing a place where it is safe to share feelings, but it is not planned as a therapy group. Who can come? Women of any age who have experienced a great loss at some time in their lives. God never intended for us to go through this journey alone. So no matter whether your journey started years ago or this year, healing can come through trusting God that he will put others in our paths who will support and understand us in our journey. Prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to be part of this ministry of healing through faith. For more information, contact Grace Shutt, Kay Windsor or the church office.
Annual Blood Drive New Philadelphia will host their annual Fall Blood Drive from 2PM until 6:30PM on Monday, November 14. This event is held in the fellowship hall. Poinsettia Orders Christmas is creeping in so the time to plan the decorations for the church is almost here. Because the attendance of our Children’s and Christmas Eve Lovefeasts continues to grow, we will expand our decorations again this year to insure that the Fellowship Hall is as beautiful as our sanctuary. A colorful and bold “Poinsettia Christmas Tree,” will add immeasurably to the appearance of our Fellowship Hall during the Advent and Christmas Season, and then, when the Poinsettias themselves are distributed, will provide meaningful memories of the season to many. You may be a part of this overall decorating plan through contributions in honor of or in memory of your loved ones. All gifts will be acknowledged in Donor/Donors In memory of In honor of Amount enclosed
the church bulletin on the second Sunday of Advent. What a wonderful time of year to remember a family member no longer with us or a special Sunday School teacher or friend you value through your commitment to the church. To participate, your checks of $20 per memorial/ honoree, along with the form below, should be placed in the offering plate or dropped by the church office by November 27 in order to be included in the bulletin. Please designate this money for the Advent Decorations Fund with the name of your memorial or honoree. Please note: The weekly altar flowers program will continue normally in December. See Marcia Hansley or sign up at the bulletin board near the offices if you want to put flowers on the altar one of the Sunday mornings. Please use this form when you submit your check to the church:
