The Season of Lent
“What are you giving up for Lent?” is a question that I am certain many of us will hear over the next few weeks. It refers to the practice denying yourself by giving up something that may taste good or feel good but isn’t necessarily good for you. People will give up things like caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, etc. Many people do this but I’m not really sure how it helps you prepare for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. When I want to prepare for this most important day in the church, I much prefer to “take on” something during Lent. During this season of Lent, we have the opportunity to take on a spiritual practice. We can take on a more intentional prayer focus such as praying for all of the members of this congregation by name. We can take on regular attendance in Sunday School. We can take on attending one of the various studies offered at our church during Lent. We can take on make an intentional effort to attend all of our worship services during Lent. We can take on being involved in the Eggs-celent Readers service project for South Fork Elementary. The important thing is that we use this time to strengthen our faith so that we can renew our proclamation that “the Lord is risen!” So, what are you taking on for Lent? ~ Pastor Joe
Mission & Social Concerns
Haiti Medical Mission: Susan’s Cook mission to help the Haitian people began 18 years ago in village of Leogane which is a coastal community in Quest, Haiti. Leogane is located on the gulf of Gonave in the southwestern part of Haiti, which is approximately 20 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince. The economy of Leogane is primarily sugarcane, fruits and local crops. Susan started her mission work with Kore Timoun Children’s Nutrition Program (CNP). Kore Timoun means caring for or supporting children. CNP believes in the following: 1. As a Christian organization their mission is to help raise a generation of healthy children who can then raise Haiti out of poverty. 2. Health care is a basic human right 3. Working hand in hand with all God’s people, to cultivate Haitian-born solutions utilizing respect, compassion and kindness.

Haiti has a long history of natural disasters dating back to the earthquake of 1564. However, below are a few of the most recent disasters. 1. The 2004 flood from hurricane Jeanne killed approximately 3000 with over 2000 missing. 2. The 2010 earthquake killed between 46,000 and 316,000, followed by a Cholera epidemic which killed approximately 4000, most were children. 3. In 2016 hurricane Matthew killed approximately 1500 while leaving about 40,000 homeless. Susan and her medical team make an annual trip to Haiti to administer basic healthcare and save lives. Sharing Space
In the 5 months that I have been with you as Associate Pastor, I have been amazed at how much activity takes place in our church. There is always something happening! It is wonderful to be in a church that is so alive and active. Because of this high level of activity, we need to be mindful of others. When you are using the church for an event or activity, remember that others are also using it for their events and activities. Please share information about the schedule for your events and activities with Rachel in the church office. She is the “Keeper of the Calendar” and can help us to make sure that we can all work together to make the best use of our wonderful facility. Thanks for your help! ~ Pastor Joe

Living Healthy Offers Hope In coordination with the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging, the Connections Ministry is bringing a six-weeks workshop for people with chronic health problems to NPMC. Called “Living Healthy,” the program targets adults with various chronic health problems and leads participants into learning proven ways to deal with the frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation their conditions may cause. The chronic conditions addressed include heart disease, diabetes, COPD, asthma, depression, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. Each class is highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The 2 ½ hour classes begin on Thursday, April 20 at 9:30 a.m. and will be held at New Philadelphia. There is no cost, but participants are encouraged to make a commitment to attend all of the classes as each module builds on the previous session. While the target audience is adults 60+, the program is open to anyone of any age who might benefit. Carol Crooks and Laura Bolton-Plunkett will facilitate “Living Healthy.” To enroll or for more information, please contact Clyde Manning.

Lenten Service Project = egsreaderEgg-celent Readers New Philadelphia members have an opportunity to promote reading to South Fork Elementary School second graders through a special project during Lent. On Sunday, March 12, a book fair will be open in our Banquet Room after each service with hundreds of books for children from pre-school age through eighth grade. The inventory will include both soft and hardbound books with an average price of $5-$6. The Egg-celent Readers project is being brought to NPMC by the Connections Ministry, which is working with Scholastic Books as the primary resource. Books of high interest, such as animals and sports, will be included as well as Scholastic’s full range of Christian books. All donated books will be distributed on Thursday, April 6 during two unique activities: Following the school lunch hour, all South Fork second graders are invited to an egg hunt on the school grounds. Each student will hunt for a plastic egg with a number inside. The egg will entitle the child to choose 1, 2 or 3 books to donate to the school library. A bookplate will be placed in each book naming the “donor,” and providing the children an opportunity to experience the joy that comes from giving. With help from their teachers, each child will also be allowed to choose a personal book from an array of titles chosen to fit his or her reading skill level. The second activity takes place later in the day when all second graders are invited to bring their parents and siblings to the NPMC Fellowship Hall for dinner. As South Fork students include children from 24 different countries, this may be the boldest outreach in our church’s history. In addition to enjoying a good meal, families will experience hospitality and fellowship, Moravian-style. Following the meal, each child in the family will have the chance to peruse tables of new books and choose one to take home. As always, the success of the Egg-celent Reader’s program depends on volunteers and you may choose to help by: • Purchasing and donating books;
Page 7
• Helping organize and carry out the egg hunt; • Working on the meal team by setting-up, preparing food, serving our guests, cleaning up after the meal or distributing books; • Providing financial support. This project connects us as a church body as we live, love and serve like Jesus. It also connects us to the South Fork community in a new way. If you would like to make this part of your Lenten journey, please contact Clyde Manning.
