The Lovefeast and Candle Service

The Lovefeast was a familiar practice in the first century Church. The early Christians celebrate the Holy Communion to maintain their vertical fellowship with God, and the agape meal or Lovefeast to symbolize their horizontal fellowship with one another. In 1727, the Moravian Church revived the agape meal, and established the custom of celebrating the great church festivals by partaking together of this Lovefeast. The first Lovefeasts of the Moravian Church in North America were held during the years 1735 to 1740 in Savannah, Georgia. The Lovefeast is primarily a song service opened with prayer. The hymns are intended to furnish the subject matter for devotional thoughts; buns and coffee are served during the singing. When everyone has been served a blessing is offered and the congregation partakes of the simple meal. The Lovefeast is not considered sacramental in the traditional sense; rather it symbolizes the all-inclusive fellowship of God’s family, the Church. The Christmas Lovefeast with its lighted candles is one of the most beautiful services of the Moravian Church. The custom originated on the European continent at Marienborn, Germany, with a children’s candle service in the year 1747. It soon spread through the Moravian world. The words to the hymn, Morning Star, were penned by Johann Scheffler, a physician of Silesia, in 1657. The melody was written by Francis Florentine Hagen, a Moravian minister, in 1836 for the children of Salem. It is sung antiphonally as the candles are distributed. Each person receives a lighted beeswax candle as a reminder that Christ said,

“I am the light of the world,” and “You are the light of the world...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The New Philadelphia congregation has a long and distinguished history of ministry in our city and county and celebrated her 160th anniversary this year. Today we are still sharing our faith through a comprehensive ministry which includes worship, Sunday school; women’s youth, and senior adult fellowships, choir and band programs for all ages; bell choir, scouting programs, and numerous other activities. We also support World and Homeland Mission projects, Sunnyside Ministry, Crisis Control Ministry, Forsyth Prison Ministry, and may other local ministries. Our regular Sunday worship services begin at 9 a.m. and 11:10 a.m., and Sunday school for all ages begins at 10:05 a.m. A nursery for the care of infants and small children is available during the worship service, Sunday school and most special services. New Philadelphia has a preschool program in service on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children eight weeks to five years of age. Led by experienced and qualified teachers, the program is open to the entire community. If you receive this newsletter and do not have a church home, we invite you to join with us. God bless you,

Worth Green

Missions and Social Concerns The Moravian Church in Cuba: Armando Rusindo was asked to speak on the Moravian church in Cuba, but to fully understand the Moravian Church in Cuba, Armando was asked to address the following questions: 1.What is the relationship between the Moravian church and the government? 2.What is the impact of the church and the surrounding communities? 3.What is the impact of church and the youth in Cuba 4.What are the needs and how can we help. Armando’s presentation not only covered the history of the Moravian church in Cuba but also how religion may have influenced Cuban leaders. In the 50 minute presentation Armando was only able to cover question one, below are some of the highlights: In the early years of the Castro government, practicing your faith was not encouraged and some cases were discouraged through various methods. However, in 1977 Fidel Castro visited with Prime Minister Michael Manley in Jamaica. Mr. Manley being a man of God gave a stack of bibles to Castro at the end of his visit to give to the Cuban people. It is not known if and how these bibles were distributed to the Cuban people but on Castro’s return to Cuba he was more tolerant of religious groups. Armando, then a priest in the Catholic Church, started reading about other religions. He reached out to Moravians around the world including the Southern and Jamaican provinces. In 1993 a small group started meetings to study the Moravian doctrine. In 1999 Pope John Paul visited Cuba which allowed people across Cuba to renew their faith in Jesus Christ. In 1997 the Moravian church in Cuba was born through a partnership with the Jamaica province. Today the Moravian church in Cuba is under the Southern Province. They receive a stipend from the Board of World Mission. However, a majority of the projects and buildings are funded by the Armando Rusindo Mission Foundation which was started by Joe Jarvis. Earlier this year two buildings were purchased through the foundation and will be renovated into churches. The Moravian Church in Cuba is a member of the Cuban Council of Churches. The Council of Churches is represented by a government minister, reporting to President Raul Castro.

Page 3

This year Cuba was declared a mission province in the Moravian church. Armando Rusindo is President of the Moravian church in Cuba and Obed Martinez is VP. There are five ordained pastors in Cuba and ten lay pastors. There are approximately 1000 Moravians in Cuba and about ten churches/worshiping groups. There is great need for printed material for Vacation Bible School, liturgy and teaching of the Moravian doctrine. Making copies of any material is a challenge when there is very limited access to a copy machine. Reading materials for the Comenius Center would also be beneficial to the youth. This was a very informative presentation; I wished we had more time. Business meeting: • October minutes were approved by members present • ARMF fundraising dinner for Cuba mission was very successful approximately $15,000 raised to support the church in Cuba. • Mission Fair – Schedule for April 2017. Discussions on the format to make it more effective is ongoing. Please send us your ideas for consideration. More to come! • A motion was made by Grace Shutt and seconded by John Geis to contribute $1000 to Samaritan’s Purse designated for Eastern Carolina hurricane matthew relief effort. The motion passed. The committee is challenging the congregation to match the $1000 contribution by the end of 2016. Income and disbursements: • November 2016 beginning balance $15,321.34 • November disbursement approvals: Samaritans Purse $1000 • Contributions during October was $5,230 Prayer list: • Kevin and Charity Manous with Campus Crusade • Anne Thiessen as she undergoes treatment for her heart • Caroline Woo to undergo treatment for brain cancer The next meeting will be January 8, 2016.

Good News about The Good News!

Our Board of Trustees approved funding for the replacement of our well-read, well-worn pew Bibles. But wait, the story gets better! A very generous, anonymous benefactor stepped forward to underwrite the entire purchase with only one stipulation. Here’s the stipulation and where you come into the story: Members of the New Philadelphia congregation should be given the opportunity to dedicate new Bibles in honor or memory of friends and loved ones. A nominal contribution to the donor’s’ choice of any NPMC fund is all that is required. Full details will follow in January worship bulletins. Now, in the words of the old spiritual, Ain’t that good news? Sample Book Plates:

Healing Through Faith

Our new women’s ministry for those who have experienced loss, had their first meeting on November 1. We had nine ladies to attend and enough food for a small army, some great fellowship and brain storming on ieas for furture meetings. Holidays are busy times for all of us but for those who have experienced a loss of someone close, it’s not only busy but can also be a sad time. Our December gathering will be a fun time sharing a movie and popcorn on Tuesday, December 6 in the church parlor at 6 p.m. For additional information call the church office, 336765-2331, or contact Grace Shutt or Kay Windsor.

Return of NPMC Dinner Club

Potluck Version Do you miss Dinner Club? Well, it’s coming back on a one-time basis in potluck form on January 21, 2017. The meals will be enjoyed in people’s homes and you will be asked to bring one dish to share. Save the date and look for a sign-up in bulletins during December!

Christmas Homecoming

Attention 20-somethings (give or take)! Please come to the first-ever New Philadelphia Christmas Homecoming - a gathering to see your old friends from NPMC Youth days during the Christmas Holiday. Join us on December 24 from 2:45 - 3:45 p.m. in the Youth Building. If you are attending the 4:30 p.m. Lovefeast, don’t worry -- we will save your seat! Simply ask our ushers to give you a seat placeholder - then come over to the Youth Building for some light refreshments and holiday fellowship. No one is too young or too old! We would love to see all past and present New Philadelphia members who graduated from high school in (roughly) the year 2006 to present. Did you teach Sunday School or know these young people otherwise? Please come and enjoy this special holiday gathering and help us say “Welcome Ho-Ho-Home!” Moms, Dads, grandparents - please help us spread the word to these young people!
