New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk We are using an online tabulator to compile the results of the Worship Survey. We have entered well over 300 surveys. Of course, as stated, we are keeping the survey open until Pentecost Sunday, May 24th. If you have not turned in a survey, you can pick one up at Church or complete the survey online (preferable) at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ NPMCWorshipSurvey. When we have compiled all the results, we will still need to interpret them. Br. Lacy Bellomy, a member here at New Philadelphia, and the founder of Bellomy Research has agreed to cast his practiced eye over them. The Joint Boards will go to work, too. Many eyes will be needed. Of course, the whole process is an open one, and if you would like to view a PDF of the results to date, you may find it online at http://www.newphilly.org/ pdf/NPMC_WorshipSurvey_2015.pdf or obtain a copy in the church office. In my view, the survey is a gold mine of information, albeit some bits are more valuable than others. For me, the most valuable takeaway thus far is that 87.6% of the people who took the survey were willing to worship at a different time, provided that it was deemed essential to our future, and worked through proper channels, i.e., the Joint Board and Congregational Council. Sunday, I discussed this particular statistic with a member, and he viewed it with similar enthusiasm. He said, “To me, it helps to define the spiritual health of our congregation. We need more of us, but those that we have are serious about discipleship, and following Jesus Christ.” Our conversation puts me in mind of our mission statement: New Philadelphia seeks to be a caring congregation, worshiping God, and encouraging one another to seek a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, as we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in service and in mission.
Last week Clyde and I met with a young woman who expressed the desire to join New Philly. She asked, “Pastor Green, what do you think is the most important dimension of congregational life at New Philadelphia?” I responded, “The way we make decisions.“ I elaborated. We discussed a couple of points, and then she brought up our Mission Statement. She saw our decision making process as an extension of that. She said that few things spoke more eloquently of our life together as a congregation. This was tremendously affirming. Several weeks ago, in a sermon, I said that, as pastor of New Philadelphia, it was my desire to be “a Bystander Manager,” as I was taught in the Parish Revitalization Curriculum of McCormick Theological Seminary. As taught by McCormick this method of pastoral leadership assumes three important facts: 1) The goals of a church, and the results of those goals, are in the hands of a living Christ, the One Whom the New Testament calls, “the head of his body, the church,” and He still seeks to guide us. 2) All the members of the body of Christ, which is the church, are responsible to the Head for the process by which we discover his goals, and implement them. The ends are in God’s hands; the means that is the method by which we accomplish those ends are in ours. How we do a thing is more often more important than what we do. 3) When the whole body of Christ in one place is engaged in the process of discernment and decisionmaking, there is a surplus of knowledge, which is power. Power like love is an expansive force. The more we give away, the more we have, especially when we give the personal power and influence we have to God, to serve God’s purpose, not our own. The result is a strong and healthy congregation. In summary, let me simply say that this survey, adds to my conviction of confidence in the future of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. Pray for our boards as we seek to incorporate what we have learned from it. More importantly, please come and help us make God’s dream for us a reality. We need you. Blessings, Pastor Green

Missions & Social Concerns At our April meeting Miriam Boytler spoke to us about her work at Peters House, a Moravian orphanage in Tanzania. The House has 32 children who have lost their parents. Miriam teaches leadership to the staff, makes daily schedules for the children,helps bathe them, dress them and serve breakfast. When the children become 18 they have to leave the orphanage and are on their own. Miriam will be leading a group of 22 students this summer on a mission trip there. The students must be a Christian in order to go. They will be building a playground for Peters House and the preschool. Miriam works through the Danish Moravian Mission Society. Monies dispersed in April: $3000 for Ray of Hope(Michael and Ceci Tesh), $670 Kevin and Chairty Manous, $300 short term mission to help Mitchell Byrd attend Convo. Also last month we sent $300 to assist Hayley Geis for Convo.

Bells of Joy On May 3, we will celebrate Moravian Music Sunday with music that reflects the musical heritage from the Ancient Unity in Bohemia and Moravia to more contemporary Moravian music. Through more than 500 years, we Moravians continue to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ with our voices and our instruments. The quotation from Zinzendorf in the front of our 1969 hymnal and the 1995 Moravian Book of Worship says, “The hymnal is a kind of response to the Bible, an echo and an extension thereof. In the Bible one perceives how the Lord communicates with people; and in the hymnal, how people communicate with the Lord.” Bells of Joy will play “Christian Hearts in Love United” and “Join We All with One Accord” for both the 9 a.m.and 11:10 a.m. services on May 3. Nicholas von Zinzendorf wrote the text for “Christian Hearts in Love United” in 1723, and Matthew of Kunwald (1457) or Gabriel Komarovsky (1467) wrote the text for “Join We All with One Accord.” May Zinzendorf ’s words from “Christian Hearts in Love United,” especially inspire us: Grant, Lord, that with Thy direction, Love each other, we comply, Aiming with unfeigned affection Thy love to exemplify; Let our mutual love be glowing, Thus will all men plainly see, That we, as on one stem growing, Living branches are in Thee. And the words from the hymn from the Ancient Unity still ring true for us today: Join we all with one accord; Praise we all our common Lord;
Page 3 For we all have heard His voice, All have made His will our choice. One in spirit, one in life, One amid earth’s frequent strife, One in faith and one in love, One in hope of heaven above.
May the music of our hearts and for this day continue to bring blessings to all. In every Moravian hymnal since 1789, these words appear in the preface: “May all who use these hymns experience at all times the blessed effects of complying with the Apostle Paul’s injunction in Ephesians 5:18-19, “Be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts.” Bells of Joy will complete this season on Sunday, May 24 at the 11:10 a.m. service with a jazzy bluegrass version of an old hymn, “No Dark Valley,” arranged by Michael J. Glasgow. Besides the five octaves of handbells played by the bell choir, Frank Nifong will accompany us on fiddle, and students from R. J. Reynolds High School and UNCSA will play fiddle, mandolin and double bass to share the joy in the old hymn that says, “There’ll be no dark valley when Jesus comes/ to gather His loved ones home.” That’s the end of this season for handbells. We will return to play in September! If you are a former handbell ringer or you just love the beautiful music of the bells and chimes and would be interested in learning how to play, please contact Donna Cartner, director, at bells@newphilly.org. Bells of Joy practice each Wednesday at 5 p.m. and play for worship each month from September to May and for special occasions.

From Our Preschool Director: As I visit throughout the community and talk with people, very often I hear a familiar endorsement: “My children (or grandchildren, neighbors, etc.) attended New Philadelphia Preschool and it’s the most wonderful place.” When questioned further, it is clear that their child was prepared for school, of which they are very grateful. What a great testimony to New Philadelphia Moravian Church and its preschool ministry. Research has shown that early experiences have profound effects on development and learning. The 140 children in our care learn about many concepts and also begin to develop the social and emotional skills needed to self-regulate themselves and also to cooperate with others. Our efforts help prepare children from across the community to be successful in
Youth Update: The past month has been a fun time for the youth. For the Easter Egg Hunt Middle School youth hid the eggs for all of the age groups, while the senior high youth prepared biscuits and hot dogs for everyone attending. Since then we have been practicing for youth Sunday. The youth have been working hard and I know they will do a fantastic job. We are in the midst of our biggest fund raiser, selling Boston Butts to anyone and everyone we can. A big thank you to everyone at New Philadelphia who has supported the youth by purchasing a Boston Butt! You are in integral part in supporting youth missions. We appreciate all you do for the youth. Final orders are due by 4/27 and pickup will be on Saturday, May 2, from 8-11am. If you have questions or would like to place a final order please e-mail your name, phone number and quantity to NewPhillyYouth@gmail.com. This summer the Senior High will be taking a trip to

school and life. Preschool Sunday was a wonderful opportunity to spotlight the importance of the preschool and our community’s children. Since 1978, the preschool has continued to shine throughout the community and give a great testimony for New Philadelphia Moravian Church. I am one of twenty seven staff that would like to thank the congregation at New Philly for their loving support. We look forward to many more years of service!

West Virginia and we are excited to find out exactly where we will be heading in West Virginia. We are using the service “Appalachia Service Project” that connects work groups with families in need in rural Appalachia. We should know where we are heading by the end of April. The summer is fast approaching and will be nothing short of a blast for senior and middle high. It will be a time of fellowship, fun, and growth. I am so proud of how much all of the youth have grown over the course of the year, and look forward to an exciting summer. Finally a big thank you to everyone that supports the youth. This includes parents, congregation members, friends, and the staff at New Philadelphia. I ask that you continue to support the youth group because without you, we would not be able to accomplish anything! Ross McNeil - Senior High Youth Coordinator

While we begin the celebrations for graduations,
completion of another school year and all the various forms of transition this time of year brings, we are also preparing for the differences in routine that the Summer provides! Representatives from all the Adult Sunday School classes had an opportunity to share with each other and Christian Education Committee members about the ministry in their respective groupings during the week of April 20th. These conversations were very constructive and insightful, we have been so thankful for stories and knowledge only beginning to be unpacked. This newly formed Adult Ministry Team will continue to meet, likely quarterly, to provide a feedback loop and in-depth communication venue for all our educational offerings for Adults. Our 5th Grade class would like to highlight their recent Students of the Month in March and April, Faith Gortman and Ainsley Williams. This class will also be undertaking some cleaning up of the Prayer Garden in the edge of the woods off our parking lot on the office side. Everyone will be invited to take a walk to this space on Mother’s Day, May 10, between our services to broadcast wildflower seeds in honor of our mothers and other women of support in our lives. We want to highlight the upcoming Wachovia Winds Youth Wind Ensemble concert at West Forsyth High School on May 17. Sydney Pinto, one of our Senior Highs, is a part of this wonderful musical opportunity. The time of this event is yet to be announced, but we will try to highlight this concert as the date approaches.
New Philly Kids May 17, 4pm Join us for a fun end-of-year event at Reynolda Gardens! We’ll do a geo-cache hunt to explore this wonderful green space, recognize the contributions of

We will receive them during both of our worship services this day. This will also be a celebration of Holy Communion for Pentecost.
Graduation We will honor our graduates on May 31. If there is a graduate, particularly from a College or Graduate School, please be sure to share this information with the Church Office.
Summer Sunday School Summer Sunday School combination classes for Children and Youth will begin on Sunday, June 7. Please stay tuned for more about the age groupings and place of meeting, this will appear in the bulletin and the June newsletter.

Laurel Ridge Workday We are such fortunate Moravians to have Laurel Ridge as our camp and conference center. And yes, as a Moravian you do own Laurel Ridge! Laurel Ridge Camp is made up of 16 cabins and 4 lodges. There are four sections, 4 cabins and 1 lodge to each section. The sections are Laurels, Birches, Oaks, and Pines. A few years ago New Philly committed to improve the Laurels section and keep up maintenance. We have 2 workdays each year and our spring workday is coming up on Saturday May 16. We will clean cabins inside and out in preparation for summer camp. Some outside work will take place such as blowing leaves and removing fallen tree limbs.
New Philadelphia has been blessed to be able to send many children to Laurel Ridge through the years and these children receive spritual training, have great fellowship, and build lasting relationships. Check out their website - www.laurelridge.org - there is a camp for just about every age child! If youthink you would like to help with work day at Laurel Ridge please send your contact info to Karl Stimpson - karlstimpson@aol.com. Karl will get workday info to you by email. From our youngest to our oldest Laurel Ridge is a blessing to all! So if you’re 15 years of age or 90 years of age and you’d like to lend a hand, just let us know! ~ Karl Stimpson
