New Philadelphia News The fifteen Strategic Goals presented in this document were distilled from several dozen Tactical Goals that grew out of a weekend planning retreat led by the Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Wayne Burkette in September of 2013. The work of defining these Strategic Goals was done by a Visioning-After-Action Committee appointed during the retreat. The Joint Board approved the Strategic Goals in December of 2013. They are reproduced here, and presented to the congregation with updates as of March 24, 2015. The congregation has seen these goals on several prior occasions. Strategic Goals 1 and 2 are interconnected and must be considered as together. 1. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to look for the full seat, identifying and reaching out to visitors with intentionality, so that we might respond to their presence among us with hospitality. 2. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to look for the empty seat, noting the sudden and continual absence of individual church members from worship and/or from Sunday school. Where members have hitherto belonged and “dropped-out,” we will seek to restore them to their place. Where visitors and members have yet to find a place in a Sunday school class or BAG (Basic Accountability Group) we will seek to help them find it. Update: Through the work of the Hospitality and Evangelism Committee, led by Tara Pitts, an in-depth hospitality audit has been conducted by a team of church members. This audit takes a critical look at our facility and many of our systems, and identifies all of the ways that we can become more “visitor-friendly” and improve our overall congregational care. The committee’s work has also led to the development of the Connections Ministry. Start looking for Clyde Manning and her clip board each Sunday before and after worship. She will be connecting with visitors and members, looking for the “full seat,” and the “empty seat.” Bring her - and her volunteer team (TBA) - the news you want to communicate about your friends and fellow church members. 3.Strategic Goal: We will evaluate the way we elect our boards to insure that all our constituencies are properly represented. Timeline: Accomplished! We

decided that the current process was providing excellent representation of the various groups within the church. The ages of our board members represent 6 decades! In addition, we are delighted to report 10 out of 11 Elders and 9 out of 12 Trustees are currently serving on the Boards for their first time. 4. Strategic Goal: We will encourage all our members to advance God’s ministry to God’s people through their gifts of gratitude for God’s goodness, love and blessings by creating 1) a culture within the church that empowers members to serve Christ using their God-given talents and blessings and 2) the necessary structure to support good stewardship of these Godgiven talents and blessings. Timeline: In Process. Each year the Stewardship Committee endeavors to involve new people, both on the committee, and in interviews before the congregation. We will continue to consider ways to identify the gifts of our members and how they might most effectively be used. Much work remains to be done here, but we recently identified Cynthia Fearington as particularly suited to our caregiving ministry. Cynthia will be taking Stephen Leader Training this summer, and teaching a class for potential caregivers during the Sunday school hour this fall. 5. Strategic Goal: We will begin a recycle program that will contribute to the welfare of environment. Timeline: In process. 6. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to conduct a more reverent Easter Morning Service. Timeline: Accomplished in 2014, approved by all who attended, and working for 2015! 7. Strategic Goal: We will use all appropriate means to inform the congregation of mission opportunities and concerns. Timeline: Working! When in doubt, check our website or our newsletter. Both are loaded with information. Want to post something to the web or get it in the Newsletter or Bulletin? Email rachel@newphilly.org.

New Philadelphia Moravian Church - April 2015 8. Strategic Goal: In the next calendar year the Mission Committee will plan and execute one family oriented mission project that will include participants from multiple Sunday school classes and other BAG’s (Basic Accountability Group). Timeline: The Board of Elders adopted “City with Dwellings,” an overflow homeless shelter as our project for the past two winters. Dozens of volunteers have become involved. The shelter closes at the end of March 2015, but will reopen next winter. This project is ongoing. If you wish to know more, contact Tiffany Wood. 9. Strategic Goal: The full Christian Education Committee will meet with representatives from all the adult Sunday school classes at least twice each year. Timeline: The Christian Education Committee continues to work to make this a reality. Input from these class representatives provided feedback that impacted planning for the 2015 Lenten Program. The first full meeting of the “council” is scheduled for April 2015. 10. Strategic Goal: We will embrace children and adults with disabilities/special needs and offer additional classes and programing, or, where appropriate, a shadowing program. Timeline: We have started a weekly shadowing program for special needs children during the Sunday school hour. For the past two Christmases we have made a special effort to welcome people in wheel chairs to the Lovefeasts. Reservations are made, and a place reserved for the individual and their caregivers and/or guests. As a result of this program several of our members have been able to attend the Lovefeasts for the first time in years! 11. Strategic Goal: New Philadelphia will work to improve the sense of belonging, common purpose, and fellowship between those who attend the 9:00 a.m. service and the 11:10 a.m. service in order to enhance our ability to share our faith in Christ that we might equip more and more disciples to serve the cause of Christ. Timeline: Working! For the past two years we have combined the following services: 1) Pre-Christmas Musical Program 2) The Easter Morning Service 3) Church Day at Laurel Ridge, on which Sunday we have one service here, and make a special effort to welcome people who cannot go to Laurel Ridge. 12. Strategic Goal: We will seek to create an inviting and informative worship space so that our children can engage in Godly Play. Timeline: Accomplished!

Page 2

The Godly Play Room on the first floor of the Education Building is in use 6 days a week! 13. Additional Strategic Goal Not Yet Approved: Continuously evaluate our worship services to better understand and serve our present and future constituencies. Timeline: Working! Br. Joel Long worked on this goal during his time among us. The worship survey he devised will be available at both worship services several times in the weeks between Easter (April 5) and Pentecost (May 24). Everyone is encouraged to fill in one (and only one) survey. 14. Strategic Goal: We will make our church more visitor friendly by making appropriate use of new technologies in our church’s ministry and outreach. Our program of high tech must compliment and continue to facilitate a program of high touch. Timeline: The new church sign is but the first phase of this program. Four areas within the church have been designated as high traffic areas which make natural gathering places: 1) The Entrance by the Office, 2) The Vestibule, 3) The Entrance of the New Fellowship Hall, 4) The Commons Area/Women’s Parlor. New signage, directional guides, and other aids are being prepared for these areas. The Connections Ministry will immediately be using the Commons Area as a gathering place. Strategic Goals 15 and 16 are interconnected and must be considered as together. 15. Strategic Goal: We will designate and develop an inviting and informative space near the sanctuary that can be used for multiple ministry, educational, and fellowship activities. It will be a place where members can connect/meet/fellowship, etc., especially with those who attend different services. 16. Strategic Goal: We will re-purpose our church library (or other appropriate) space as a “bookstore,” meeting place, and information center that will be open during times of high traffic. Timeline: A committee led by Mike and Kathy Johnson has polled all the organizations that regularly use these two spaces, and submitted ideas gleaned from these polls to the Boards for consideration. The next phase of the project is to secure architectural drawings of the areas in question so that they can be publicized within the congregation, funded and executed. Respectfully submitted: Worth Green, Pastor

Recapturing the Reverence in the Resurrection Service Traditionally, the Resurrection Service, which takes place after Easter Worship in the sanctuary, began with the pastor reading the Easter Morning Liturgy from the balcony that overlooks the front entrance to the Church. At the conclusion of that portion of the liturgy, the pastor came down, and followed the band to God’s Acre. All worshipers, including the choir, followed the pastor, and all non-essential communication was kept to a minimum. A Silent Procession was the goal.

Children will be invited to participate in age level hunts throughout the morning: 10:10 AM - Infants and Young Toddlers (2 & Under) 10:40 AM - Preschoolers (3 & 4 year olds) 11:10 AM - Young Kids (5 & 6 year olds) 11:40 AM - Older Kids (7 & Older)

Of course, that was before we built so many buildings, and created so many different ways of leaving the church, and entering the graveyard. Over the years, the movement to the graveyard lost all form. People were understandably eager to take up a position near the graves of their loved ones, and they moved quickly to do so.

Enjoy other activities throughout the morning in Fellowship Hall: Face Painting, Guessing Games, Cake Walk, Pin the Tail on the Bunny…the Coloring Station, Pom-Pom Painting, Bubble Wand Creation and Origami. Support the youth through their fundraising meal of sausage biscuits or hot dogs served throughout the hunt! Call for Easter Goodies for the Cake Walk - please drop off individually wrapped treats in the church kitchen before 9:30AM on April 4 - Label your items “Cake Walk”.

It was still a great service; but many of us felt it was once even better, more reverent, more moving, a conscious deliberate act of corporate worship.

Easter Services Easter Worship on Sunday, April 5 begins at 10:30AM (No Sunday school) Easter Morning Liturgy begins at 11:30AM (Begins at the front of the church and we process to God’s Acre) Important Reminders for Easter Services: • There is a nursery available for children under the age of four. • Remember to bring fresh flowers and greenery on Easter morning. A large wooden cross, wrapped in wire, will be in the Sanctuary. Come early and arrange your natural spring bouquet on the cross before worship.

This year we would like to recreate the experience of years in the not too distant past. This year our Ushers will try to channel all worshipers into this procession to pass through the main entrance to God’s Acre: Band, Pastor, Choir, and then the Congregation. We would like to give the band time to process to the graveyard, and start playing antiphonaly, and we would like to have the pastor who is conducting the service lead everyone except the band through the Main Gate of God’s Acre. People who have special needs, especially those in wheel chairs will be admitted through the other gates, and once the band, pastor, and choir is in place, the other gates will be opened to everyone. We will need extra ushers to accomplish our goal. If you are willing to help, please contact Fred Flynt (fflynt@triad.rr.com), or Dick Rodden (richardrodden@hotmail.com). So, too, if you attend Easter Worship, and are not

New Philadelphia Moravian Church - April 2015 staying for the Resurrection Service, it would help if you park in the east lot (on the Preschool/Office Wing side of the church), or off campus, in one of the adjacent office parking lots. Otherwise, you may be asked to sit in your car until the processional passes. We think this return to a more structured and orderly Resurrection Service will add immensely to this wonderful act of corporate worship. We trust it is not an inconvenience to the congregation; but a blessing, and we hope that everyone who reads this will understand and appreciate our effort.

Missions and Social Concerns April will be a busy month for all of us! After Easter on April 12, our mission moment will be about the Moravian Mission Society. Guest speaker that morning will be Donna Hurt, President of the Mission Society. Did you know that the first Moravian missionaries went out in 1732 and by 1753 were scattered throughout the world? The North Carolina charter for the Foreign Missionary Society of the Moravian Church ,South (THE SOCIETY) was signed on November 16,1922. We have been sending missionaries worldwide ever since! For further information on the Mission Society you can contact the Board of World Mission Office or check their website moravianmission/org. New Philadelphia will be hosting the Mission Awareness Dinner on May 3 at 5:30. Admission will be $8.00 for a BBQ dinner cooked by Big Boy Chefs Crew. There will be music and a short meditation, ending with the commissioning of 2015 mission teams being sent from Southern Province Moravian Churches. Monies dispersed by the Mission Committee the month of March are: Amani Childrens Foundation $2000 Chairty and Kevin Manous $670 Michael and Caroline Woo $3000 Moravian Clinic in Ahuas, Honduras will begin rebuilding this year. Brother Rick Nelson will serve the clinic for 2 years to coordinate administrative and financial efforts in rebuilding the 70 year old clinic. Rick will be in Winston-Salem in April and below is

his schedule of speaking to congregations. Please try to attend one of these and hear about the clinic: • • • • •

Sunday, April 19 - Friedberg 11a.m., Sunday, April 19 - Fries Memorial 4pm, Monday April 20 - Hope 7pm, Wednesday April 22 - Fairview 12:45pm, Wednesday April 22 - Home 6:30pm (call to signup for supper)

Information about the clinic: 1) Patients primarily served are members of the Miskitu Ethnic Groupmedical treatment is not available anywhere else in the area so they come from miles around for treatment. 2) The facility offers 20 patient beds, some x-ray equipment, a labor, birthing and labor room, operating room, 3 out-patient exam rooms. It is hoped to add a decompression chamber for treatment of disabled lobster divers. 3) A variety of surgeries are performed. Please come out to one of these gatherings to hear about this wonderful clinic! There will be mission displays of trips taken by members of the Southern Province this year at the Mission Awareness Dinner on May 3. Come out and see what our church is doing around the world. Three of our church members will be leaving for Cuba on May 2: Joe Jarvis, Evon Crooks, Bruce Ledwith. They will be visiting the 9 fellowships in Cuba that we hope to turn into Moravian Churches. The team will be led by Bishop Sam Gray. Please keep them in your prayers. Again, thank you for your continued support of our Committee both financially and in prayer. We need to reach the “untouched” wherever they may be. Trust in God always. Our next meeting will be April 12 at 5 p.m. in the Banquet Room. Our guest speaker will be Mirium Boytler from Denmark. She is visiting the US for 2 months, even going on a short term mission trip to work on hurricane relief in New York. We are an open committee and all are welcome.

Bells of Joy

Women’s Bible Study

On Sunday, April 5, the Bells of Joy handbells choir will join with choirs, the band and other instrumentalists to play the glorious music of our Easter service. Handbells will play “Gloria!” as they did in October (the piece composed by Frank Voltz in honor of Donna Cartner’s ten years of service as handbell director) and a stirring arrangement of “All Creatures of Our God and King.” The words to this hymn were written in 1225 by Francis of Assisi but were not published for almost 400 years. The tune is a well known German tune. Based on Psalm 148, one of the verses reads: Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness, O praise Him! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

Bring a lunch, bring a friend for a Women’s Bible Study! Join us for a 6-week Beth Moore study entitled, “When Godly People Do Ungodly Things.” Series begins on Friday, April 10, meeting in the library from 11:30am-1:00pm. Please RSVP to Sarah MacReynolds, smacreynolds@triad. rr.com by April 6, so we can have the correct number of study guides for the group. For Preschool Parents, this overlaps with the schedule for Lunch Bunch; however if there are additional childcare needs, please share this information with Sarah and we will follow up with more information.

Join us in joy and praise for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday morning as we play this hymn for our 10 a.m. worship. Bells of Joy will also join the choirs and bands from our Regional Council of Churches, the Yadkin View RCC, on Sunday April 26 for an afternoon sharing of music at New Philadelphia. Choirs from Unity, Clemmons, New Hope in Newton and Macedonia will play with our New Philadelphia ringers as we share “Here I Am Lord,” a graceful and simple hymn published in 1981 and written by Dan Schutte. The hymn is based on Isaiah 6:8, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me.” Bells of Joy will play other pieces along with the choirs and congregation for this event as well. If you are a former handbell ringer or you just love the beautiful music of the bells and chimes and would be interested in learning how to play, please contact Donna Cartner, director, at bells@newphilly.org. Bells of Joy practices each Wednesday at 5 p.m. and plays for worship each month from September to May and for special occasions.

spring festivals, they’ve become Christian symbols of new life. A cracked-open shell also represents Jesus’ empty tomb on Easter morning. •The early Christians of Mesopotamia began staining eggs red in honor of Jesus’ blood shed on the cross. Red eggs remain part of Greek Orthodox celebrations today. •For Lent, some families used to give up eggs and dairy, so they prepared a pancake feast on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. They solved the egg surplus by hard-boiling them in various broths, which led to colored eggs. •In medieval times, churches held “egg-throwing” festivals. The priest threw a hard-boiled egg toward the choir boys, who tossed it back and forth. When the clock struck 12, whoever was holding the egg got to keep it. •In some European countries, children go from house to house to collect Easter eggs. •Each year, the PAAS Dye Co. sells more than 10 million egg-coloring kits, which consumers use to decorate 180 million eggs. •The tallest chocolate Easter egg ever produced weighed 16,000 pounds — more than an elephant!

Youth Update: Right now is a very exciting time in the church for the youth. The Senior high youth just returned from an amazing ski trip at Winterplace, WV. The trip was full of great conditions, strong devotions, and amazing times. Youth had the chance to ski and snowboard during the day, and devotions in the mornings and at night time. The trip was non stop fun, laughter, growth, and realizations. Everyone that was able to go on the trip had the chance to grow closer to God and enjoy fellowship with their peers. Coming up in the future, the Youth will have two fundraisers, with all proceeds going towards the Mission Trips for the Senior High and Middle High. Senior High will be going through Appalachia Service Project that helps those less fortunate throughout the Appalachian Mountains. Middle High will be going to Laurel Ridge for their Mission Camp, that provides outreach to some of the sates poorest counties including Alleghany, Ashe, and Wilkes. On April 4th, the Senior High Youth will be cooking breakfast and lunch for the Easter Egg Hunt. All food will be served in the fellowship hall. Also throughout April the youth will be taking orders for their “almost world famous Boston Butts”. Boston Butts will be

distributed on the morning of May 2nd. Cost of Boston Butts are $30 and every order includes some of the best barbeque sauce known to man. April 26th will be Youth Sunday. Sadly, Worth no longer qualifies to preach on Youth Sunday, so please come out to see how amazing the youth at NPMC are! They will be leading both services at 9am and 11:10am. No reservations on seating, first come first serve so be sure to be there early! Finally a big “Thank You” to all of the members of the church that support the youth in so many ways. From chaperones, providing meals, Sunday school teachers, hosting Bible study, youth committee, mentors, advocates, and every other way you as a congregation support our youth. Without you our program would not be what it is. If you ever would like to become more involved or like more information please feel free to contact myself of Erin Key (Middle High Youth Leader).
