sandwich, and we will provide the beverage. We will be meeting in the church library, just across from the Office. Lent is also the time for an extra spiritual discipline, some people add something, some people give-up something, and some people do both. I will be adding extra devotional texts, and giving up sugary deserts, and sweet drinks. Giving up sugar is not a diet. A spiritual discipline is always better than a diet, although I invariably get healthier.
Lenten Studies & Disciplines I am really looking forward to the Lenten Season. I love to teach and I will be offering two different courses of study. As always, the church will have a full program, and multiple study options. On each of four Sundays in Lent: March 16, March 23, March 30, and April 6, we will gather for a choice of classes and options at 5PM, and then will enjoy a meal together at 6PM. I will be teaching one option, a workshop on Grief Sharing for Introverts. No participant will be forced to speak. Each session will last about one hour. Half of each session will be dedicated to a presentation, and half to questions, discussion, and listening to one another as appropriate. I always get as much as I get. Subjects include: 1) Personal Hope- --The Christian Doctrine of Resurrection & Eternal Life; 2) The Stages of Grief, which is based upon the book, “Good Grief,” by Granger Westberg; 3) Helping the People We Love in Times of Loss; and 4) Hope for All of Us: The Revelation of St. John the Divine in One Hour. The presentation for the Revelation will take a little longer, perhaps 45 minutes. There will be handouts for every session. There are several other exciting Sunday evening options and a brochure is available at http://newphilly.org/ pdf/2014-lent.pdf. I will also be teaching an interactive Bible study entitled, “Faces Around the Cross.” We will meet on two Tuesdays in March, the 18th and the 25th, and two Tuesdays in April, the 1st and the 8th. Handouts will be provided, but bring your Bible. We will begin promptly at 11:45AM and quit at precisely at 12:30PM. Bring a

Ellen FoxPhD, LMFT “I don’t understand it. The techniques my parents used so effectively with me just don’t seem to work with my children.” Does this statement sound familiar to you? And while many parenting philosophies have been presented over the past 30 years, parents today can still find themselves in frustrating and ineffective power struggles with their child. Created by Dr. Foster Cline and Jim Fay, the “Love and Logic” approach helps parents raise responsible children through a combination of empathy and consequences. If you are a parent, grandparent, or caregiver of children or teens, join us and learn how to use this practical approach. “The Truth of Ruth” Pastor John G. Rights This four-week study will examine the four chapters of the Book of Ruth and explore its themes of love, loyalty, relationships, and redemption.
New Philadelphia Moravian Church - March Spiritual Autobiography Pastoral Intern, Aaron Linville During this course, each participant will write their own spiritual autobiography. This exercise is a good way to discover the ways God has been at work in your life that you might not have noticed. Because we will share parts of our spiritual autobiographies with a partner each week, you might to ask a close friend or family member to be your companion through this lenten journey. Limit 12 to the class. Grief Workshop for‘Introverts’ Offered by Pastor Worth Green This class will not require members to share, though they certainly may share where appropriate; but we will concentrate on the Christian doctrine of hope, and grieving in the context of hope. Sessions will include: 1) Personal Hope---Resurrection & Eternal Life; 2) The Stages of Grief---based upon the book, “Good Grief ” by Granger Westberg; 3) Helping the People We Love in Times of Loss; and 4) Hope for All of Us: The Revelation of St. John the Divine in One Hour. For Our Meals Simple soups, breads and sandwiches will be offered for each Sunday evening session. Donations are encouraged to cover the cost of the meals. During each mealtime, prayer stations will be offered around the Fellowship Hall. We invite you to visit them and spend a few moments of reflection during our Lenten Journey together.

Bells of Joy
New Philadelphia Moravian Church - March
“Will You Come and Follow Me?” will be played by Bells of Joy on March 23 for the 9 a.m. service. The hymn by Scottish hymn writers John Bell and Graham Maule is set to a traditional Scottish melody, “Kelvingrove,” and is a summons, a call to “take up the cross” and follow Christ and a reminder that Christ calls us by name to follow him. The worship song may be from a more contemporary generation, but its message is timeless and a thoughtful one for the Lenten season. The hymn ends with a prayer for the strength to follow Christ in a life-changing way: Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow In you and you in me. Gaynelle Hill was drawn to play handbells when gifts from New Philadelphia church members enabled the purchase of the first octaves of handbells in 1974. As soon as her schedule allowed, she joined the bell choir, and she has been ringing for the 32 years since. Gaynelle hopes to continue ringing for several more years. “I just know that when I heard the bells play, I wanted to be a part of it. Playing bells is one way I can give to our church and contribute to the worship service. I feel the joy of music in my heart and soul. I hope our music does the same for others,” Gaynelle said. Gaynelle plays the C8 (C in the 8th octave, the highest bell we have), as well as C6, C7, D6, D7, all the sharps and flats associated with them and the handchimes for C6, C7, D6 and D7, and their sharps and flats. She

has played as a substitute for Friedland Moravian’s bell choir in the past as well as her regular place in the New Philly Bells of Joy. Mike Sloan enjoys the challenge that playing handbells offers, and playing the largest bells and handchimes in the bass octaves can be challenging—especially when there are sixteenth notes. These heaviest bells must sometimes be played with a mallet instead of lifting and playing them hand to hand. Mike plays C, D, E and F with all the sharps and flats for those notes in octave 3, the lowest octave of the five octaves Bells of Joy plays. Mike started playing in 1985 and has also played for bell choirs at Olivet and Bethania Moravian churches. “Music is such an important part of the Moravian Church. Whether we are singing from the hymnal, listening to the beautiful choir anthems, the wonderful sound of the band or the music of the bells, they all add equally to the musical worship experience of our church, and many of our listeners make it a point to let us know how much they enjoy the music we ALL provide,” Mike said.
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Psalm 100:1

Missions Committee News Joe Jarvis talked with us at the February Missions meeting about the Moravian presence in Cuba. There are approximately 12 fellowships and 12 Moravian churches at present meeting in homes, and other venues. Please pray for our presence there and that the time is right for God to expand his kingdom. Joe and Sam Gray will be going back in March for another visit. We ask that you keep them in your prayers. This month we dispersed $2000 to the Braimas in Sierra Leone, $1000 to Celeste Handy who is working with Native American students in Window Rock, Arizona at the University of New Mexico-Gallup, $670 to Charity and Kevin Manous, $1000 to Steve Marx working with Mission Aviation Fellowship. Our committee is open to anyone interested in missions. We meet on the second Sunday of each month at 5:00 in the banquet room. Our next meeting will be March 9. We invite you to come, bring new ideas and projects! It is with sadness that we announce that Cindi Jones is stepping down as leader of the Mission Committee after 30+++ years. She has been a wonderful leader and dedicated and faithful to guide us all these years. We can never thank her enough! We would like to open this position up to anyone in the congregation who is interested in leading the Mission Committee.

We have many things happening during March. Here’s some information about them: Preschool Sunday, March 16 All our preschool families are being invited to join us this morning for worship - so we’ll hope to have lots of little people with us. It’s been awhile since our last Preschool Sunday, so this will be a time to hear a bit about what’s happening in this ministry of our congregation. We’re encouraging preschool families to join us at 9am especially with a time for them to share a song during our worship. So be ready to greet and help them find their way. On this morning, children 2 and up will be encouraged to be part of our worship service, just as the preschool children 2 and up join me for Preschool Chapel each month. Our nursery will remain available as always, but we are preparing to accommodate more children who are under 2 on this morning. Children 2 and 3 years old will have their own special Children’s Church at the same time as our 4 year olds through 1st graders meet for Children’s Church. All children will be invited to join their leaders for their time of worship - so they will be called on by age to go out to their worship spaces. Volunteer Needs Join us for our March 8 Training Event Our children’s ministry is always looking for new volunteers for our many programs, Sunday School, Children’s Church, Kids of Faith, New Philly Kids and even our coming Summer VBS. On Saturday, March 8 from 9am - 12:30pm, all our current volunteers and anyone who is curious about ways they might contribute to our children’s programming are encouraged to attend. We’ll spend some time in overview of our many curriculum changes, share information about what is expected of volunteers in the various roles we have and talk about the challenges and opportunities we have with today’s children. Behavior management, special needs modifications, back pocket activities to use in a pinch

Cuba Trip Report As you may be aware, Bishop Sam Gray and I took a trip to Cuba back in September, 2013. Our involvement was to participate in the process of helping the Moravian Church of Cuba become officially recognized. Our trip was more of a blessing to me then I ever could imagine. I would like to share briefly with you some of the events that took place. • Approval of their Book of Order (437 articles). It took 3 days to review and be officially approved by vote. • Election of President and directors. • Ordination of 3 Deacons (one had been ordained in the Reformed Church, so was received into the ministry of the Moravian Church) and Consecration of 1 Presbyter. These events took place over several days with the attendance of 50 delegates from each of the 5 Districts, 1 representative from Guantanamo, Sam and I. The approval of the Book of Order took 2 days to read over each article and discuss. I was very impressed that each and every article was taken very seriously. To see a group of people being able to vote in a communist country was astounding. On Saturday, Brother Armando Rusindo was elected their first president. That evening we gathered in the Episcopal Church where the conference delegates had a service of worship and celebration. Bishop Gray delivered the sermon at the service, which was attended by several members of the communist party government. Sam also ordained 3 ministers and then consecrated Brother Armando as a Presbyter. Sunday morning we attended worship in Havana. This was held at a lady’s home where they regularly meet. Her home also serves as the office for the Moravian Church of Cuba. 40 plus people were in attendance. Sunday afternoon we travelled some two hours to the province of Matanzas where we attended an afternoon service at the home of Rev. Obed Martinez. 100 plus people were present. Brother Obed offers his garage and beyond for use as their church building. None of the churches have their own facility as of now.
Page 10
Sunday afternoon we visited a hospital for severely handicapped children. The facility is in dire need of cleaning. The children had to wear cloth diapers, which were changed by the nurses who do not have rubber gloves. I was really touched by the poor conditions that these children have to live in. We are currently in the process of raising funds to help with the needs of this hospital so these children can have a more comfortable place to live. These are some of the current and monthly needs. Current Needs: • Washing machine • Towels • Professional mixer for preparing meals Monthly Needs: • Rubber Gloves • Cleaning supplies • Disposal Diapers • Toothpaste • Bar soap • Laundry soap Their monthly needs run around 525.00. Our plans are to find a way to send them funds on a quarterly basis to help subsidize their needs. The Board of World Mission is currently working on a way to send funds directly and legally to the Moravian Church in Cuba. Sam and I will be going back down on March 14th to spend some days working in the hospital with their cleaning needs. We are able to carry some money with us at that time. Our countries may not see eye to eye, but these people are so warm and caring. They do not want us to come and do the work for them, but just need financial help. Again, I have never been so touched as I was by these Moravian brothers and sisters. There is such hunger from these people to hear the Christian message our church has to offer. Please follow the guidelines below for the most appropriate way to donate. Make check payable to “Board of World Mission” On memo line, write “Mission Area”
New Philadelphia Moravian Church - March Either give the check to Joe Jarvis or mail it to: Sheila Beaman Board of World mission 500 S. Church St. Winston-Salem, NC 27101 Then call Sheila (336-773-1732) and ask her to designate the check specifically to the Childrens Hospital in Jaguey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba, or if you would like for it to go to just Cuban missions in general specify that way. You may also specify either of these in a note accompanying your check, but please DO NOT write this on the memo line of the check. I will be glad to speak to any class or organization if anyone wishes for me to. Please keep our brothers and sisters in Cuba in your daily prayers and that the Moravian church will continue to grow there.
Pastor John Writes: Our Youth have been involved with a number of activities recently, including a Middle High and Senior High evening ski trip to Sugar Mountain, and another ski weekend for Senior Highs at Appalachian Ski Mountain. In addition to other regular meetings, our Middle Highs went ice skating on February 21. Looking ahead, our Senior Highs are planning for a mission trip to Jamaica during the week of July 5-12. There will be an information meeting for parents on March 2, and deposits are due March 16. We’ll have another Boston pork butt fundraiser coming up in April! And during March, there will be activities available for Youth during our Lenten programs on Sundays. We’re grateful for the continued participation of so many in our Youth program! See you in March!
