Youth News

The youth have been having a wonderful spring and have been keeping very busy. Recently the youth spread the pine needles around the church with the help of some parents. Fortunately we were blessed with perfect weather and was the largest showing ever for pine needles. The youth have also been bowling and have been selling Boston Butts. At the end of April, we cooked and distributed 80 Boston Butts with the help of Joey Transou. Coming up we are planning a bunch of exciting activities. The first weekend in May the youth are going to Laurel Ridge for an Eco-weekend. Youth Sunday will be on May 21. Our end-of-year youth cookout will be on the afternoon of May 21. Finally, the senior highs have started a Bible study of the book of Daniel in anticipation of their trip to Cuba for summer camp and outreach. We have been working with Joe Jarvis to plan this trip and are very excited to have the opportunity to fellowship and grow with the Cuban Moravian Church. If you are interested in any youth events please let us know! For middle high on goings contact Erin Key at ErinGKey@gmail.com and for Senior High Ross McNeil at RMcNeil513@gmail.com. Missions and Social Concerns

Friends of Moravian Prison Ministry: The Rev. Robert Wolfe gave a very inspiring and informative presentation on the role of the Moravian Church in Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry (FJPM). Currently there are approximately 700 inmates in Forsyth county prison and another 250 in the county jail. Since 1978, our community churches across Winston-Salem have shared the gospel with incarcerated men and women through the Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry, helping them seek Christ and break the cycle of crime and punishment. In 1995 the Moravian Church formalized a partnership with FJPM and called Pastor Robert Wolfe to a full-time Chaplain’s position. Rev. Wolfe is the only Moravian minister serving with FJPM. Through this ministry partnership, Chaplain Wolfe: • teaches Bible studies and life-skill classes; • leads worship at the jail and prison; • provides 24-hour emergency crisis counseling for inmates; • reconnects inmates to their estranged families; • provides marriage counseling to strengthen fragile families; • coordinates a weekly Yokefellow meeting at the prison and jail; • encourages men after incarceration. Due to budget constraints Rev. Wolfe ministry is currently dependent on donations for funding. Rev. Wolfe reminded us as Christians that of the myriad of people, we minister to daily few are more desperate, more in need of Christ’s love and forgiveness than our brothers and sisters who are imprisoned. Not only are they physically bound, they are often spiritually bankrupt and morally adrift. In order to minister as we have been commissioned, we must see the incarcerated not as “us” and “them”, but ONE in the body of Christ. They are fathers, mothers. Spouses and siblings. They are children of God, no less than we are and they deserve our love, forgiveness and compassion. If you are so moved to help with this ministry, you may contact www.moravianprisonministry.org
