A graduate of I have never been more excited by the year ahead. our program, Ross is a PE teacher at Diggs-Latham. All this news is very good, indeed, and the Youth Committee thinks that we have everything in place for Blessings, a year of excitement and growth. Pastor Green STEWARDSHIP: Watch your mailbox for a complete schedule of our stewardship activities this fall. The program is entitled, “The Road Ahead,” and it details new developments in five areas of our congregational life, each tied to our Mission statement: Pastor John Writes: New Philadelphia Seeks to be a caring congregation, worshiping God, and encouraging one another to seek a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, as we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in Service and in Mission. The five areas of focus are: 1) Caring 2) Worship, 3) Christian Education and Growth, 4) Service and Mission, and 5) Stewardship. Highlights of the program include: 1) Launch of the Stephen Ministry Training on September 5. 2) Sermons charting the Road Ahead in Education by the Rev. Christy Clore, and the Road Ahead in Mission by the Rt. Rev. Sam Gray. 3) Introduction of Legacy Giving by the Moravian Ministry Foundation. Dates are in the colorful brochure that you will be getting in the mail. For a sneak preview go to: http://newphily.org/pdf/theroadahead.pdf. VISIONING: Teams will be in Sunday School Classes on September 1 and on September 8 to gather data for a Visioning Exercise the weekend of September 13 (Friday: 6PM-9PM) and September 14 (Saturday: 9AM-3PM). Several classes have already participated

As the fall schedule begins, we’re grateful for another amazing summer! Our youth had two incredible mission trips to Staten Island and Eco-Mission Camp at Laurel Ridge, and we’re thankful for the support, encouragement, and prayers of our congregation. During August, we had a huge group travel to Charlotte to spend a day at the National Whitewater Center, and everyone had a wonderful time. The opening cookout for our Middle and Senior High Youth will be Sunday, September 8, which will kick off the year ahead. We’re also getting together with youth from the other Moravian churches in our Regional Conference (Clemmons, Macedonia, New Hope, and Unity) on September 21. I hope and pray that everyone has had a safe, blessed, and enjoyable summer, and now that school has begun, we look forward to another great year together. See you in September! In Christ,

The Rev. John G. Rights

The Bells of Joy

Tell me Thy secret; help me bear The strain of toil, the fret of care.

The Bells of Joy handbell choir plays for worship services and special occasions during September through May each year. Sunday, September 22 during the 9 a.m. service, we will begin our season of playing for worship with “O Master Let Me Walk With Thee.” Karen Walter, soloist, will join us that day.

Help me the slow of heart to move By some clear, winning word of love; Teach me the wayward feet to stay, And guide them in the homeward way.

Because the theme of the worship service is Caring and information about Stephen Ministry will be shared that Sunday, we are sharing a hymn with the theme of discipleship, of practicing the love that Jesus taught us, guiding others to follow him. Washington Gladden, a Congregational pastor, wrote “O Master Let Me Walk With Thee” in 1879, and Christians have sung this hymn as a prayer in a world that still needs the transformation of Christ. Hear the words of the first two verses with us as we play: O Master, let me walk with Thee, In lowly paths of service free;

Page 2

Watch future editions of the newsletter for background about the pieces that director Donna Cartner has chosen for us to play for the congregation. We will also share stories about the twelve of us who play handbells. It is our joy to bring the music of the bells to you in worship.

Moravian Birthday Hymn With your presence, Lord, our Head and Saviour, bless us all, we humbly pray; our dear heavenly Father’s love and favor be our comfort every day. May God’s Spirit now in each proceeding favor us with his most gracious leading; thus shall we be truly blessed both in labor and in rest.

Spotlight on...George & Mildred Furches Our Spotlight features church members who currently are unable to actively worship at New Philadelphia.

Mildred Miller Furches was born into the New Philadelphia congregation 86 years ago. Both of her parents and their parents were members. Her clearest memory of that history is her confirmation at age 12 with Pastor Howard Foltz. Growing up on a poultry farm, Mildred’s neighborhood was technically the Ardmore area of Winston-Salem. An early childhood friend was another NPMC member, Billie Holton. Mildred graduated from Clemmons High School and went to work at Bland’s Music Company on Trade Street following graduation in 1944. Her high school boyfriend, George, was Baptist, and had no interest in changing denominations. But Mildred played the New Philadelphia organ on Sundays, and to be near her, he compromised and began attending, even joining the choir. “I’ll never forget how shocked I was on one particular Sunday,” Mildred says. “Henry Lewis was the pastor, and during the service he made an announcement, saying: ‘I’d like to introduce a new member: George Furches.’ Since then, George has called himself a Moravian Baptist.” Mildred and George were married in 1949 in the old sanctuary of New Philadelphia. They had two children, Randall and Ann Elizabeth (who died at birth). Over the course of their 64 years together, the couple enjoyed family time at their mountain cabin near Fancy Gap and playing bridge and golf together. Of course, church was always the center of family life. Mildred was the church organist for nine years, served as an Elder, and enjoyed membership in Circle #5. Both Mildred and George have been members of the David Jones Sunday School class for many years. What’s special about the Moravian Church? Well, everything, according to Mildred. “I love the liturgies,” she explains, “because they’re actually scripture. If you really think about the words you’re reading, you’ll realize that they’re describing what we

believe. And, I love the sermons, especially the series Worth has been preaching about heroes of the faith.” Mildred also appreciates how much like a family New Philadelphia is. “They’re a friendly bunch, and new members fit right in.” Mildred’s life changed dramatically two years ago when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “When I first learned I had Parkinson’s I told Worth that I wouldn’t be inviting him to my pity party – because there was not going to be one! It’s not in my nature to feel sorry for myself.” Indeed, while there have been challenges, Mildred’s warm smile has never faded and her spirit has not been defeated. Husband George describes her this way: “She accepts her limits, doesn’t cry about the losses and makes the best of the situation.” When Mildred talks about her blessings, she quickly mentions her grand-children: There are the 16-yearold twins, Jessa and Gwen, and their brother Alex, married and living in Nashville. She is also grateful for her two care-givers, referring to George as her lifeline, and friend Martha Haynes (who has been with her for almost two years) as her “laugh-line.” Another blessing continues to be church relationships. While Mildred and George enjoy the visits of those who bring their monthly Open Door Lunch, they’d welcome more visitors. “Just drop by anytime,” is their open invitation.

Book Bag Project

such a gift to families who don’t have the means to purchase so many supplies.

A joint venture between the Open Door Lunch and the New Friendship class was successfully completed August 20 with the delivery to South Fork Elementary School of sixty book bags filled with school supplies. The Open Door Lunch outreach ministry raised $695 to purchase school supplies to fill the sixty book bags purchased by the New Friendship Class. Many of you also donated supplies.

Ms. Terry Murphy, (pictured below) Home/School Coordinator at South Fork, was “…delighted to accept sixty filled book bags. We will give them to students who need the help. Our school appreciates all that New Philadelphia Moravian does for the students and staff at our school. This is great. Thank you.”

New Friendship class members spent two fun filled days, counting, shopping, and filling the bags. Special thanks go to David and Chris Stanfield’s grandchildren, Jacob and Natalie, who kept the adults organized and focused. We even have some money left over so we are going to purchase some items in bulk for the teachers at South Fork. This project is

At New Philadelphia we know that serving our community is truly a Christian privilege.

e had three guest speakers at our August Meeting. Jane Stephens from the Amani Childrens Foundation brought us up to date on the activities of New Life Home. Did you know $500 feeds a child for one year through the Amani Foundation, $1000 sponsors a baby for one year. FACTS: • 1400 abandoned babies have been cared for since 1993 with 1100 of those adopted. • NPMC Missions Committee has sponsored 3 of these special needs babies since 2007. Please continue to keep them in your prayers and we hope you will continue to donate so we can continue to give these special children a home at New Life Home. 100% of Amani donations are sent to the Home, 100% of proceeds from the bead jewelry sales goes to New Life Home. For more information go to www.amanichildren.org. Also Hayley Geis reported on her trip to Honduras through Young Life. Robert Thiesen spoke to us about his work with the unreached people in Mexico. Monies dispersed at our meeting were $667 to Kevin and Charity Manous, $1000 to Phil Raeford, $1000 to Childrens Nutrition program in Haita and $2000.00 to Samaritans Inn. We will also send $976 to buy chairs for the Seminary in Bethel, Alaska. Our Sew a Dress will be winding down soon. At this point we have 120 dresses toward our goal of 200. We will have another “Sew Day” on September 14 from 9 to 12:00. If you haven’t had a chance to participate, please come. It is fun and a blessing at the same time. Deadline for all dresses is Oct.1. Please leave them in the Craft Room or see Cathy Ebert or Jane Wynne. Please keep all our missionaries in your prayers. There is much turmoil going on in our world and they need our prayer support. Thank you for your continued support of our committee and God’s work in this day. Next meeting will be 5PM on September 8. Please come!

Happening Around the Province Provincial Women’s Board Macedonia Moravian Church will host a Bible Study Preview of “Moravian Heritage and Our Life Today” by Rev. Dr. Nola Reed Knouse, on Saturday, September 14; coffee served at 9AM, programming begins at 9:30AM. Check the flier on the bulletin board for more information. Shepherd’s Center The Shepherd’s Center has a shortage of drivers to provide the critical service of driving the elderly, homebound folks to their doctor’s appointments. The shortage of volunteer drivers means that they are using cabs 30% of the time right now. Next year, lack of funds to pay for cabs will mean that many people will go without transportation to their doctors unless more volunteers can be found. Volunteering to drive involves only one round trip a week and usually involves a wait time in the office. If necessary, volunteers will be reimbursed for their gas, and all volunteers are given extra insurance by the Shepherd’s Center. Call 336-748-0217 if you have questions or would like to volunteer. Discover Your Spiritual Type Workshop Mark your calendars for a free workshop sponsored by the North Branch RCC on Sunday, September 15 from 4PM-8PM, at Olivet Moravian Church with a meal provided. How do you express your relationship to God, self, and others? What’s your “spiritual type?” Do you get more from a Bible study, or do you respond best to a beautiful anthem? Do you like to experience God in nature, or is helping others your way of worshipping? Join us as we explore which of these types of spirituality resonate most deeply with you. We’ll also look at the spiritual types of your congregation and talk about the importance of all types being part of congregational life. It takes all of us to make the church! There is NO cost for this event; we ask that you rsvp so we can plan for the meal! Please feel free to contact the Board of Cooperative Ministries with questions: bcm@mcsp.org, (336)-7228126

Chill ‘n Chat Book Club Join us for BCM’s Chill ‘n Chat Book Club! We’ll read and discuss together a variety of fiction or nonfiction books that may impact our faith. The first book we’ll read is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Get your own copy (from the Resource Center, public library, Amazon, a friend, etc.), read it, and then join us at the BCM Offices (500 South Church St., WinstonSalem) for an enlightening conversation! Attend either a morning or evening session on Monday, October 7 at 10AM and 7PM. Then, at a special follow-up event on Monday, October 14 at 7PM, Donna Hurt (Director of Christian Education at Home Moravian) will share her own version of Unbroken. Please feel free to contact the Board of Cooperative Ministries with questions: bcm@mcsp.org, (336)722-8126. We’ll hold online discussions for those of you who can’t join us in person. Community Shred Day Fries Memorial Moravian Church will be holding a Community Shred Day on September 7 from 10AM to 2PM in the Fries Church parking lot. September is a great time to clean out those old tax returns, bank statements, medical records, credit card offers and receipts, and any other personal files and documents. Protect your identity and shred with confidence with Shamrock Shredding of the Triad, a secure and professional service. Businesses welcome too! Suggested donations of $5 will be asked for each “banker’s box” of material. A minimum donation of $5 will be required to participate. All donations will be used to support Fries missions and programs. Date: September 7 Time: 10AM to 2PM Where: Fries Memorial Moravian Church 251 N Hawthorne Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 (beside Reynolds High School) in the Fries Church parking lot

we'll let you know as this will be a growing process. Along the way, children from age 4 through 1st grade will be invited to participate in this hands-on way of worshipping. We will be working toward implementing Godly Play, a curriculum that invites children to hear the stories of the Old and New Testaments through wooden sets of figurines that illustrate visually what the children are hearing in each story. Sound like fun?... if you're a woodworker or are curious about this approach to hearing the Bible, give me a call! As I cross the 100 days mark as your Director of Christian Education, we have lots to celebrate from the Summer and many things to look toward and plug into for the Fall. VBS has received many compliments and I still can't fully express how wonderful a "welcome present" it was to have so many people step up, volunteer on such short order and extend grace to me in pulling so much together in such a short period of time. None of what we accomplished could have happened without all the volunteers who participated!

Fall Sunday School

After a Summer of shared spaces and broader age groupings, we're excited about moving into Fall Sunday School with smaller groups, new curriculum and some gradual changes in our meeting spaces. We're looking at having 10 classes for children and youth during the Sunday School hour, plus nursery care just for children from birth to 2 years. We are still working on finalizing the teaching teams for each group, interested??? - I'd love to add you to one of these teams! Fall Sunday School for children and youth will kickoff on September 8, including a special time during both worship services that morning recognizing our classes.

Children's Church

As we move through the Fall, we are excited about creating a more dedicated space for exploring ideas about worship and the Bible during our Children's Church. As changes are ready to be implemented,

Kids of Faith will now include children from 2nd

through 5th grades, since 1st graders will remain included in Children's Church.

New Phillies

The theme of service that emerged at VBS was such a hit among kids, parents and volunteers alike that the New Phillies will be carrying that into an exploration of stewardship this Fall. New Phillies will go on an Amazing Race adventure during their sessions learning about service to our church, our community and our world throughout the Fall. We're excited about weaving music with Miss Sandra into this program more intentionally. New Phillies is for all children from Kindergarten through 5th grade. New Phillies will kick-off on September 15 from 4 to 6pm. Parents of all children are invited to participate in a parent's meeting for all areas of Children's ministry from 4 - 6pm, with childcare provided for children from birth through age 5. A family dinner will follow at 6pm.

Children's Choirs

Sandra Gray will continue to share her love of music with the children through our children's choirs. Their rehearsals will begin on September 8 - with K - 2nd graders meeting from 5:15 - 6pm and 3rd - 5th graders meeting from 6 - 6:45pm. These are just the highlights...
