(sometimes going out for dinner) and a handson activity. Among the activities were acrylic painting, reflective writing, making jewelry while supporting Amani missions, learning to knit caps for infants in hospitals and offering support for each other in the form of fellowship, listening or sharing a movie. Lose Love Live: The Spiritual Gifts of Loss and Change by Dan Moseley defines grief as “learning to live again in the absence of something or someone significant.” He writes about good companions for those who have experienced great loss and says, “Naming the losses in the presence of good companions, who accept you as you are, is a valuable part of this growing process (of grief).” The next meeting is planned for Tuesday, August 15 at 6 p.m. in the parlor. Those interested in attending may contact Grace Shutt for more information.

Missions and Social Concerns Rev Russ May – City with Dwellings: Russ gave a very informative evolution and goals of City with Dwellings. City with Dwellings was born out of Anthony’s Plot which started in 2010 through a partnership between Russ and Trinity Moravian. The Anthony Plot house is in the Sunnyside neighborhood with a mission to welcome guest that are usually homeless. However, with the need for homeless shelters at the time, about twenty churches from our community came together to address this need and they quickly realized that the concept of Anthony Plot was not adequate. Hence, City with Dwellings was born with a more holistic approach to address the needs of the homeless. City with Dwellings developed a four-point plan to address the homeless need: 1.Establish overflow shelters at Augsburg Lutheran. First Presbyterian, St Timothy, Redeemer and First Methodist 2.Provide a Day Resource Center on 4th street to help the homeless address daily challenges (open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m.). Approximately 35 guests per day receive services. Staffed with highly trained volunteers 3.Provide a Housing Team to help with daily anxiety 4.Provide a therapeutic community Guest would work on their goals at the resource center i.e., addiction. The overflow shelters cost approximately $70,000 for the winter, mostly for paying seasonal trained staff. In terms of funding, City with Dwellings does not receive any City Funds. However, they receive about $11,000 from HUD and approximately $30,000 from various congregations. They are a 501-C3 looking for fiscal partners.
Page 7
The population served are the most vulnerable with health and economic conditions that need daily attention and those in need of support systems to make it through the day. In addition, City with Dwellings has developed a 5 year goal to eliminate homelessness in the Winston-Salem community. This can only be accomplished by all of us helping. We are our brother’s keeper and the homeless in our community just need a little of our time to get back on their feet. Dusty Harrison –Greek InterVarsity at Clemson University: Dusty has spent the past 10 years working with the Greek InterVarsity groups on the campus of Clemson University. The goal is to get one or more students in each club to accept Jesus Christ so they can spread the word among their club members. With approximately 15,000 students at Clemson, about 4,500 are Greek InterVarsity members. Each year new fraternity Bible study groups are created. In the past ten years these mission efforts have seen 75 students accepting Jesus Christ. This year being Dusty’s 10th year at Clemson, he is planning a worship service with graduates and current students to celebrate his ten year mission. Business meeting: June 2017 minutes were approved by members present. Ross McNeil updated the committee on the number of youth attending camp in Cuba. He requested financial assistance for the seven youth attending camp in Cuba. The committee approved $300 per youth for a total of $2100. The committee also approved $300 for Ross. The youth will share their experience in Cuba with the congregation on August 6, 2017 in a Mission Moment setting.
New Philadelphia Moravian Church August/September 2017 The committee agreed to dedicate its October meeting in the fall to brainstorming alternate mission options. The committee also agreed to donate approximately $1000 to City with Dwellings in December based on the November account balance. Income and disbursements: • July 2017 beginning balance $13,991.24 • July 2017 disbursement approvals: Charity & Kevin Manous $2010, ARMF $2,500. $2100 for the seven youth going the Cuba camp ($300 each) & $300 for Ross McNeil • Contributions during June 2017: $2438.45 Meeting and speaker schedule: • August 13 - Phil Raiford – Mexico Mission
