Gift Legacy It’s a plain truth: doing God’s work often requires abundant resources, including money. Thoughtful, careful planning and stewardship of funds is critical for helping New Philadelphia Moravian and its many ministries grow and thrive. But where do you begin? How do you ensure that the ministries which resonate most with you will be supported beyond your lifetime? Our GiftLegacy planned giving program, which we began last fall, provides members with opportunities to support New Philadelphia through legacy gifts. We are pleased to partner with the Moravian Ministries Foundation in America (MMFA) for this program. The MMFA offers a full suite of resources to help you accomplish your charitable goals; these tools can help you maintain income, claim tax benefits, or support loved ones in addition to supporting New Philadelphia Moravian. The Foundation’s services are free, confidential and without obligation. To speak with Paul McLaughlin, Foundation president, please call 888.722.7923 or he can be reached at pmclaughlin@ mmfa.info. A legacy gift lasts and supports the vital ministries of our faith community forever. Thank you for your commitment to New Philadelphia Moravian Church.

Bells of Joy

New Philadelphia Moravian Church - May

For the May 25 Memorial Day service, Bells of Joy will play “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a familiar patriotic hymn. Written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861, the hymn includes the lines, “As He died to make men holy,/ Let us live to make men free,/While God is marching on.” We hope you will hear those words as we play. Bells of Joy plays for worship services and other special events between September and May each year and takes the summer off. We will return next fall with new pieces for praise and worship. Each of the twelve ringers in the bell choir have been introduced in these monthly newsletter pieces, but we have saved our talented and patient director for this last piece. Donna Cartner has been director of the New Philadelphia Bells of Joy since 2005. Her first bell choir was at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church where she organized the choir at the request of the family of Bobby Coltrane, who was killed in the explosion at the National Guard armory while in reserve training. After that, she organized bell choirs at Clemmons UMC, Pine Grove UMC, and Advance UMC. She directed existing bell choirs at Sedge Garden UMC and Bethel UMC. New Philadelphia’s bell choir is the first Moravian bell choir she has directed, but she has had a long connection with Moravians through her sister-in-law, Cindi Jones. Donna said she had learned more about Moravians and the emphasis we place on our Moravian heritage as she worked with Bells of Joy. Donna’s hope is that our bell choir members will continue to become better musicians in order to make our offering to the worship more effective. She directs, teaches and nudges us to challenge ourselves and each other in practices and in playing for worship. “This is a great group of individuals to work with and explore their talents and dedication. They are special,” Donna said about the bell choir. And the feeling is

Page 5

mutual: The bell choir appreciates Donna’s expertise, her knowledge and her strong faith as she continues to direct us into her tenth season with Bells of Joy. While New Philadelphia’s bell choir began in 1974 with the purchase of the first octaves of handbells, the tradition of handbell choirs in American churches is just a bit older. Handbells evolved in 17th century England when bell tower practices were long and loud. Using handbells made it possible to practice in warm pubs rather than in cold towers. Handbells were brought to America about 1840 and made popular by P.T. Barnum as a circus attraction. Handbell groups then entered the Vaudeville circuit, finally arriving in churches in the 1940s. Even though the bells have a long association with churches, it took a few detours through the circus and Vaudeville to bring back the bells to church. In the long tradition of Moravian music, bell choirs are relative newcomers, but we make a joyful noise just the same.
