New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk Ash Wednesday falls on March 5. This announcement may be a little premature, but before you know it, Lent will be upon us; we are in the process of finalizing our Lenten Programming. I love this time of year, and especially our meetings. When we start out, we will be dealing with the dregs of winter, but, hopefully, as we finish, we will be experiencing the wonderful warmth of the sun. We will meet four times: Sunday, March 16, 23 and 30, and April 6. Courses will meet from 4PM until 5PM., and a light supper will be served from 5PM until 6PM. There will be something for the whole family. The New Philly Kids will be invited to “Gather in the Garden” for a study on prayer as we think about Jesus’ time of prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. Each of their 5 sessions, beginning March 9, will look at different ways we can pray and what we should be mindful of as we pray. Our preschools will gather for a program called “Jesus Loves Me!”, looking at the parable of the sower, the calming of the storm, the feeding of the five thousand and the parable of the lost son, through snack, craft, and story-time. Children age 2 and younger will have Nursery care provided. Middle and Senior High will gather for their fellowship meetings on March 16 and 23, take a break on March 30 (during their schools’ spring break) and go for a hike on April 6 joining in dinner afterward. Youth and Children’s Choirs will rehearse with Sister Sandra Gray, exact times to be announced soon. Sister Ellen Fox will be doing four sessions on some facet of Marriage and Family Life. Brother John Rights will offer a course on “The Truth of Ruth.” This four-week study will examine the four chapters of the Book of Ruth and explore its themes of love, loyalty, relationships, and redemption. Brother Aaron Linville will be doing a workshop on spiritual autobiography. During this course, each participant will write their own spiritual autobiography.
This exercise is a good way to discover the ways God has been at work in your life that you might not have noticed. You will also come to a fuller understanding of where you are in your spiritual life, and your relationship with God will undoubtedly deepen through this process. Because we will write part of our spiritual autobiographies and share parts of them with a partner each week, you might to ask a close friend or family member to be your companion through this lenten journey. I will be doing grief workshop for “introverts.” This class will not require members to share, though they certainly may share where appropriate; but we will concentrate on the Christian doctrine of hope, and grieving in the context of hope. Sessions will include: 1) Personal Hope---Resurrection & Eternal Life; 2) The Stages of Grief---based upon the book, “Good Grief ” by Granger Westberg; 3) Helping the People We Love in Times of Loss; and 4) Hope for All of Us: The Revelation of St. John the Divine in One Hour. We may also offer morning sessions on a weekday if anyone expresses interest. What day works for you? Are there any takers? Finally, Sister Clyde Manning has been busily putting together a follow up to our 2013 Lenten Devotional. Many of you have already submitted your articles. This year we will be using larger type (we are a year older), and we will be printing more copies. We heard remarkable stories about last year’s book, and we expect this year’s publication to reach even more people.
Blessings, Pastor Green

Lamb Ministry Brings Comfort in Haiti New Philadelphia member, Susan Cook, was part of a medical team that served in Leogane, Haiti late last year through the Kore Timoun/ Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti (CNP). When Susan embarked on her trip, she took the usual medical supplies and an armful of lambs representing New Philadelphia’s Lamb Ministry. Susan’s hope was that the lambs might be used to comfort sick children or as a way to engage their parents. What Susan hoped and imagined might happen did happen when a young boy named Makensson arrived at a mobile medical clinic in the mountain village of Ti Harpon. His parents were perplexed by the abdominal swelling that was making him very ill. The medical team at the clinic examined the child and determined that he should be taken to the CNP for further testing. Before leaving Ti Harpon, Makenssen was given a lamb with a tag around its neck proclaiming that Jesus is the good shepherd who “lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). The scripture was read to the parents in Creole and they were assured that the prayers of the New Philadelphia congregation would accompany them on their journey. Makensson and his mother traveled three miles down the mountain and then took a 45-minute truck ride to the CNP office where the two spent the night. The next morning, arrangements were made for staff members to taken Makensson into Port au Prince where another examination revealed that he had a Wilm’s tumor, a type of kidney cancer. A surgical evaluation at Mirebalais Hospital determined that the tumor had grown but was operable. First, however, there would be two months of chemotherapy. The medical team has returned home and Susan remains thankful to be part of the Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti, and to find options for children

like Makenssen. She says: “While it will be a long road for him and his family, without medical care or a miracle there is no way Makenssen could survive this. Many ifs still remain BUT we are so thankful for these positive steps in the right direction and that he has parents who want to do all they can for him. Through the blessings of the New Philadelphia congregation and the little lambs that represent it, Makennssen will continue to be covered with prayers and support, as will many other children we meet in Haiti who have such limited medical options on their own. Through the lamb ministry, I am reminded that "Jesus is the Good Shepherd and He loves you and watches over you."
Pastor John Writes We're grateful for the participation of so many of our youth during December's activities, including the Children's Lovefeast & Christmas Play and the Christmas parties for Senior & Middle Highs. Our youth began the year with a return to regular meetings on Sundays, as Daniel Muto and Ross McNeil continue to lead our groups. Looking ahead, our Middle Highs and Senior Highs are going on an evening ski trip to Sugar Mountain on January 31, while our Senior Highs will also have a ski trip to Appalachian Ski Mountain during the weekend of February 7-9. In addition to other activities, our Middle Highs will go ice skating on February 28. Events have been planned through June, and calendars have been e-mailed to families of our youth, so we're looking forward to another amazing year. See you soon! Peace to you, The Rev. John G. Rights

Plan now to join the Funtastics on Thursday, February 20 in the Banquet Room. Our speaker will Frank Morgan, a well-known, retired teacher and educator. Mr Morgan is a proud member of the greatest generation. Mr. Morgan began teaching English to students at Clemmons High School in 1951. He was named principal in 1955. Once the high school closed in 1956, he became principal of Clemmons Elementary School and served there until his retirement in 1984. Before teaching, Morgan served in the Air Force during WWII and was captured during a flight operation over Germany after his aircraft was hit. He was captured after landing safely when he was ejected from the plane. He was one of three airmen out of nine that survived the crash and is the only one of those three to remain alive today. He was held as a POW until being liberated in May, 1945. (Resource: www.journalnow.com)

Lenten Devotion Guide in Production For the second consecutive year, a Devotion Guide is being produced to accompany our journeys through the Lenten season. Fortyseven authors from within the New Philadelphia congregation have reflected on scripture passages from the Moravian Daily Text, beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday. Last year, 1,000 copies of a Lenten Devotion Guide were printed and distributed to church members and friends, and local businesses. By the beginning of Lent, the supply had been depleted. This year, 2,000 copies will be available on March 2nd, the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday. Readers will be delighted to find that artwork by NPMC children is included in the Guide. The Lenten Devotion Guide brings a daily focus to our spiritual lives during this important season and is also a wonderful way to share our faith with others. It remains free of charge. Start thinking of ways you can help distribute this booklet here in our community so that others may enjoy an especially meaningful Lenten Season.

Moravian Birthday Hymn With your presence, Lord, our Head and Saviour, bless us all, we humbly pray; our dear heavenly Father’s love and favor be our comfort every day. May God’s Spirit now in each proceeding favor us with his most gracious leading; thus shall we be truly blessed both in labor and in rest.

Bells of Joy
New Philadelphia Moravian Church - February
Donna Cartner, handbell choir director, chose “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as the selection for bells for January 26 at the 9 a.m. service. Because we had just celebrated the birth of the Prince of peace, Donna thought it would be a good idea to continue to think of peace as we begin the new year. We hope you heard the words as Mark Cartner sang them and as the handbell ringers played the piece and thought of Jesus’s teachings of peace for us all. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God as our father, brothers all are we Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony. February 23 at the 9 a.m. service, Bells of Joy will play “How Great Thou Art.” Originally written as a poem in 1885 by a Swedish preacher, the hymn was translated and set to music in the 1920s by English missionaries serving in Poland. The hymn became identified with the Billy Graham Crusades in the 1950s when it was brought to this country. In a number of polls, it ranks as the number one hymn in both Britain and America. Think of the familiar words as you hear it played: O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Pattie Farrar has been a ringer for the handbell choir for about 11 years at New Philadelphia. She always loved hearing handbells during church, but it was not until she joined New Philadelphia that she had the chance to play. While in an aerobics class at New
Page 7
Philadelphia, Cindi Jones invited Pattie to a practice, and she has been here ever since. Pattie plays E and F bells and handchimes and the sharps and flats for those notes in the 6th and 7th octaves. (Think piano keyboard and think of the very high notes.) Pattie may play four or more bells at once in a song. Pattie loves music of all genres and says that she went to that first practice with the group assuring her that “all I needed to do was be able to count a rhythm.” She was hooked, and although she found that playing bells was much more than counting, she has loved being a part of the handbell choir. “We are not perfect but we always play from the heart and for the glory of God. I attribute this to our director (Donna Cartner) for keeping our focus on the true reason we play,” Pattie said. Marie Rodden has played handbells for 13 or 14 years at New Philadelphia. She played handbells briefly in a choir at First Presbyterian many years ago, but joined Bells of Joy because she thought it would be fun to play. Marie plays the F and G bells and chimes with their sharps and flats in the 5th octave (the same octave as middle C). “I love it when we play as one unit--the sound is amazing; it’s like we are one complete musical instrument, different parts but one unit,” Marie said. “I think music is a very important and vital part of the worship service, and I hope the bell choir contributes to our worship. We are so fortunate to have Donna as our director; she is talented, experienced with handbells and church music. She is patient with us and able to bring out of us more than we thought possible,” Marie said.

Missions Committee News
We approved our budget and distribution of monies for 2014 at our January meeting. Our upcoming budget is $52,040.00. We thank you for your support in 2013 and pray for continued support in 2014 so we can continue working with local missions as well as missions abroad. This month we will support Dusty Harrison with $1000. Dusty and his wife serve at Clemson University in establishing and advancing witnessing communities (fraternities and sororities) and faculty who accept Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. This is accomplished through prayer, bible studies, outreach and community events, camps, conferences and response to poverty and injustice in our world. Keep them in your prayers as they serve in this worthwhile capacity. Kevin and Charity Manous- $670. These are longtime servants of the Lord and need our continued prayers. Phil Raeford $1000. Phil and his wife work with Mixe people in San Juan Juquila, Mexico. Eunice serves as a doctor and provides medical care and medicines through the medical clinic. Phil works with the men in the villages on various projects. This family is dedicated to church planting in an area that has been resistant to the gospel. They have a new baby and we ask that you keep them in your prayers. Samaritans Inn $2000 Missions is such an important part of our Moravian Heritage. We invite you to our meetings, the second Sunday of each month, 5PM in the banquet room. We strive to serve to the best of our ability for furthering God’s kingdom in our world. If anyone has suggestions we are open to these and invite you to come and discuss those. We are all God’s servants and need to share our gifts and talents with those in need. Our next meeting will be February 9 at 5PM. See you there!

Aaron’s Notes:
After the congregation enjoyed a cup of wassail between Sunday School and the Second Service on December 22, several people asked me how it was made. Here is a guideline recipe. I have never used a recipe and tend to eyeball all the ingredients, so all of the measurements are approximate. Feel free to experiment with the amounts and other ingredients until you find the perfect blend that suits you well. Enjoy,
Aaron

Christy’s Corner
This month our Christian Education Committee and I have several updates about a few things we are working on that I’d like to share with you all. Godly Play for Children’s Church and Kids of Faith Children’s Church: For now, I will be leading most sessions as the Godly Play storyteller with occasional help from folks I have asked to step into this role. This gives you an introduction to what this worship leader will be doing and some of the techniques for telling the Bible stories in this way. Training for those interested in becoming a storyteller is coming, let me know if you are interested. When you sign up as a volunteer you’re signing up to be the doorkeeper for this program. The doorkeepers at each session help the children to enter the space calmly, sit on their carpet square so all the children can see what is happening and ask the children to use quiet voices and speak one at a time. This often means you have a restless child sit with you or you tap them on the shoulder to remind them of the expectations, sometimes when a child isn’t engaging with the group there may be a need to have them sit apart from the group until they are ready to join in. The doorkeepers help with bathroom trips and are there to help the children get their materials when it is time to respond to the story. Kids of Faith: We’ve recognized the need for more worship education and are moving to make this time for the older elementary children one for their own interactive worship service. Aaron Linville, our pastoral intern, is working with me to launch this while we find someone to become a regular worship leader for them. They will be hearing some of the significant Biblical stories that lay the foundation of our Christian calendar while learning the ways we worship - liturgical prayer, music, proclamation and sending forth. When you sign up as a volunteer you’re signing up to be the assistant leader. Again there to help the children to engage in the lesson, to participate and share your thoughts and responses to the lesson and to encourage the children to respond.
Page 10
Volunteer leaders are always welcome for these interactive worship experiences for children. Please talk with me or send me an email at christy@ newphilly.org. Children’s Ministry Volunteer Workshop March 8, 9am - 12:30pm I am planning a Children’s Ministry Volunteer workshop and would love to have anyone interested in working with children join us. We will have some Godly Play trainers here that day to do some orientation to this program with us (this curriculum is the core element in what we are doing for both Children’s Church and Kids of Faith). We’ll talk about classroom management and the expectations document we’ve been developing, and look at all the elements of our Children’s Ministry and how they fit together. Morning snacks and a light lunch will be provided! If childcare is needed for you to attend, please let me know as I do plan to have options for kids during this event. Adult Class Visits Don’t be surprised if you see me visiting with your Sunday School class over the next few months! While we’ve been doing a lot of work with our children’s classes, I haven’t forgotten the adults. Most of us know that we have many different adult Sunday School options and I’d like to get to know each of you a little better - and perhaps even create a way for all of you to get to know each other a little bit better. I’ll be in touch with class leaders to seek a time to come and meet with your class for a session - we’ll talk about what really interests your group, what projects you’re engaged in, share news about things happening in other parts of our programming and explore ways for leaders from each class to gather with me and one another to think about our ministry to and from our adult Sunday School within our congregation and beyond. Save the Date Easter Egg Hunt April 19 10am VBS July 28 - 31 from 9am til Noon. In peace, Pastor Christy
