New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk
to learn a second spoken language. Ouch.
The Stewardship Mailing for this year is an exciting one. I think you will like the quick-read, newspaper style format. It is the brain child of Betsy Fraser, working with Clyde and other members of the staff. Boiled down, our stewardship emphasis is on volunteering, both within and without the church. In my recent study of “body evangelism,” or “total church evangelism,” I have discovered that the best way to get the church into the community is to get volunteers into community organizations. We have a heavy presence in the Sunnyside Ministry, and a presence in many other agencies. We also value volunteers within our church, for you are those who make visitors welcome. I think that New Philly is sitting on the seam of some dramatic growth, within, without, and up. In Ephesians 4, the apostle writes that we are to grow up in every day into Him who is the head of the Body, that is Christ. We are to go on growing until we reach “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,” which he definies as “mature personhood.” That is a lifetime goal.
The Board of Cooperative Ministries is hosting a seminar on November 15 at New Philadelphia entitled, “Be the Church: The Followers of Hus in a New Generation.” Sounds interesting. Check NewPhilly.Org for details. Want something different? A friend of mine is enrolling for a motorcycle course at Forsyth Tech. Say, that is an idea, albeit a risky one. One of our members learned to fly an airplane when she was past 60. Is that safer? I am not sure. One member of my family who styles herself as computer challenged, just enrolled in a course that Salem College is offering on the iPad. I would, I think, sacrifice my whole library rather than give up Olive Tree Bible Reader on my iPad. The search features are so powerful that they enhance the ability to dig deeper into the text of scripture more quickly than ever before. It is available for smart phones, too. By the by, I notice that many tablets have dropped under $200, new, with used ones much less. That is something that even some seniors on a limited budget can afford. Of course, to get the most out of a tablet, you will need a Wi-Fi internet connection in your home, or, else spend lots of time in the public library, or in your favorite restaurant or coffee shop, or in our church library!
What are you doing to enhance your growth? Have you joined a new Bible study recently? I have a keen interest in doing a reprise of “The Revelation of St. John the Diving.” Are any of you interested in being a part of that? Or what about this: Have you considered learning a new language? Rosetta Stone is now offering 3 years of unlimited access to the language of your choice for less than $250 dollars. I did a trial lesson of Latin American Spanish. It occurs to me that I will not have to go far to practice, and I can make some new friends along the way. Survey’s suggest that 20 percent of all Americans past a certain age, say that one of their life’s great regrets the failure

Why would I even mention things like this? Calvin said it best. He said Christian maturity involved a state of “perpetual adolescence.” The adolescent is teachable, pliable, and all about experimentation and growth. In Christ that growth can be exciting, whatever direction it takes. It can all be put to his service. Blessings, Worth of Iron Mike, and The Local Boy Scout “Memorial Walk” of fallen soldiers. After a full day of activities, the boys fellowshipped with rounds of bowling and hanging out. The Boy Scouts will start their annual fund raiser of selling popcorn on September, 26th 2014 through October, 31st 2014. Have any questions contact Chris Vestal. Boys can join anytime.

hen I began my internship late last October, we knew that I would only be here for a year at most, and that year is rapidly coming to an end. I would like to thank those who were on the Joint Board and HRAC who extended the invitation to me to serve as your Pastoral Intern while I waited for a call. Because the Southern Province had not had an internship program for many years, we did not know exactly what to expect, or how I would fit into the larger life of the congregation. Thank you, all of you, for your patience as the the rest of the staff and I figured that out, and thank you for your continual support. As I look back over the last year, I am struck by New Philadelphia’s generosity, beginning with your response to my request for Overflow Shelter volunteers, continuing to the number of people who attended the Moravian Identity Class and to the conversations I had with the Youth during our Sermon on the Mount and Revelation Bible studies. My prayer is that your generosity will continue, and that it will Plan now to join the Funtastics on Thursday, October 16 when we travel to Randleman for a tour of Victory Junction, a year round facility offering camping and other activities to children with serious illnesses. Children and their families are offered meaningful experiences at no cost to child or family. We’ll leave the Church promptly at 9:00. After the tour lunch will be enjoyed at Pioneer Family Restaurant in Archdale. Please RSVP to Rachel in the Church office by Monday, October 13. All are welcome. Bring a friend. Circle 2 is selling Moravian Star note cards - there are two options, blank cards and cards with a Christmas greeting. The cards sell for $5 a pack (includes 6 cards/envelopes). You may contact Pat Dinkins at 336-945-5409 or any Circle 2 member.

increase so that you many bring even greater blessings in the future. On October 14th, I announced that I will complete my internship at New Philadelphia, and that I have accepted a call to serve as the Pastor of Rural Hall Moravian Church. My last Sunday at New Philadelphia will be October 19th, and my first at Rural Hall will be November 2nd. On October 12th, Bishop Sam Gray will ordain me at Union Cross Moravian (my home congregation). I thank you for all the prayers you have lifted on my behalf, and ask that you continue to pray for me and Amy as we transition into our new roles at Rural Hall. I also ask that you keep Rural Hall and New Philadelphia in your prayers as you both navigate this transition as well. Thank you, and may the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ go with you; where ever he may send you,

Bells of Joy
Bells of Joy handbell choir plans a special offering of music on Sunday, October 19 for both first and second services. As thanks to Donna Cartner in her tenth year of service as director for the handbell choir for New Philadelphia, the ringers plan to play a piece written in honor of her. Frank Voltz, conductor, composer and arranger as well as a performer on harp, piano and organ, composed “Gloria!” for harp and handbells in honor of Donna Cartner for the Bells of Joy handbell choir. Frank will perform “Gloria!” on the harp with the handbell ringers for the “World Premiere” of the piece on October 19. We wanted to honor our director because “Donna has just been so instrumental in pulling our group together and picking interesting music,” Becki Fulton, Bells of Joy president, said. The music offers praise and worship to God, and we hope the congregation’s worship is enhanced each time we play. “My inspiration (for “Gloria!”) came from knowing Donna Cartner. She is full of love and joy. When the bell choir approached me about the commission, I suggested an original composition that I wrote for harp in 2013 called ‘Gloria!’ I had always heard it in my head with harp and handbells. The commission

gave me the opportunity to create the version for harp and handbells.” Frank Voltz said. “I think the audience will hear the love and joy that is so much a part of Donna’s life and personality. It is a happy piece, lots of big chords, lots of glissandos on the harp, lots of fire, lots of passion, and most of all FUN!” Frank said. “I would like to express my appreciation to the New Philadelphia Ringers for their generosity and their vision to do something special for Donna to thank her for 10 years of service to the church and her dedication to the handbell choir,” Frank said. We hope that you hear our praise and love as we serve God and recognize Donna Cartner’s dedication and service over the last ten years. Note: After the WORLD PREMIERE on October 19, Frank plans to submit “Gloria!” for harp and handbells to Jeffers Handbell Supply in Irmo, SC. Jeffers (www.handbellworld. com) is the largest retail handbell vendor in the country. If they accept the submission, it will go into their catalog and churches all over the country will be able to play it.

Mission Expo Unites Missions Committee and Open Door Lunch The Missions Committee of New Philadelphia announces its annual Mission Fair with a change in name, venue and time: A Mission Expo will take place on Wednesday, October 1 during the lunch hour – the Open Door Lunch hour! – in the church’s fellowship hall. Volunteers involved with both Open Door Lunch and Missions realized the value of uniting for this one-time event since both groups benefit local non-profit organizations doing important work in our community. The change to a weekday will also expose the church’s missions projects to a new audience. The Mission Expo is not only about education and exposure, however. This year, the organizations’ representatives will come seeking volunteers for specific activities. This is an opportunity for you, your group or your family to “sign up” to make a difference in our community. Come. Enjoy a good meal. Learn how New Philadelphia is having an impact in Winston-Salem and beyond. And make a decision to give the gift of your service so that our community might become a better place to call “home.”
On October 12 during our worship services, we will be highlighting the work of Sunnyside Ministry through a visit from Tommy Cole, the director of this important outreach. We invite the congregation to participate in a food drive on October 12 to fill the Sunnyside Collection Boxes. The collection target items for Sunnyside during October are: Canned Fruit, Canned Meats and Macaroni & Cheese. These items and other food staples would be welcome additions to their food pantry. Let’s fill those boxes!
