New Philadelphia Newsletter - November 2014

New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk We continue to experience changes to our staff. Sunday, October 19 was the last day for Aaron Linville and his wife Amy to be present with us. He was ordained by Br. Bishop Sam Gray at Union Cross Moravian on Sunday, October 12, and he will be installed as Pastor of the Rural Hall congregation on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Keep Aaron and Amy in your prayers. We will miss them both. I am sad to report, too, that Daniel and Katie Muto are leaving us for Asheville, N.C. Daniel has been leading our Senior High Youth for more than a year, and doing a wonderful job, with much help from Katie! The Youth Committee is already hard at work on his replacement. We are delighted that we have c. 50 young people meeting with the Middle and Senior High groups, and information is being communicated to them, and to their parents, both in person, by Daniel and Ross (McNeil), and by email also by Daniel and Ross. Ross writes that, at the direction of the Youth Committee, he will be stepping into the Senior High job, and the Youth Committee is well along in its search for a new Middle High leader. I have heard several exciting possibilities. It is hard loosing Daniel, but I do believe this is going to be a great year for our youth.

short-term, part-time contract person. Joel has had a distinguished career as a pastor in the local church, and, most recently, has been an intentional interim for 2 ½ years at Frist Presbyterian in Boone, N.C. where we have at least three former New Philadelphia families in attendance. Joel is preaching at New Philadelphia the first Sunday in November. My contacts in the Boone Church tell me that we will both enjoy, and be challenged by his message. I know that I have been challenged by his presence in the office, and that is a good thing. Unlike most of you, I seldom get to worship outside of New Philadelphia---I am not complaining, just stating a fact, and it is to get a window into how other churches---like First Presbyterian in Boone are meeting the challenge of ministry today. By the by, I will be in that church leading a “Moravian Lovefeast” on the evening of December 7th, and I always look forward to that service. It is my hope that all these changes will not detract from our stability. I believe that God is doing a great work among us, and I believe the year ahead will reveal that in some remarkable ways. The Love of God the Father, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all.

Meanwhile, as most of you know, Br. Joel M. Long, is working for us through the end of the year as a

The Long Line ____________________ (A newsletter article written by Joel M. Long, Interim Staff Associate)

“A STEWARDSHIP MATTER!” I once heard a stewardship expert share the following quote: “God is not looking for gifts. God is looking for givers” Often I have used this quote to remind me and others in church leadership that God is the great gift-giver! It is the Spirit’s mission to give the gifts (time, talents, and treasures) needed for the kingdom’s advancement. God is looking for people who are willing to be givers of the gifts provided by the Spirit! October and November are stewardship months when our New Philly congregation is promoting important opportunities for “givers” to share and shine!

play “How Great Thou Art” as part of the worship service. The much-loved hymn had its origins in a Swedish poem,” O Store Gud” ( O Mighty God) and was set to music in the 1920s by English missionaries then brought to the United States during the 1950s for Billy Graham crusades. In a number of polls, it ranks as the number one hymn in both Britain and America. Think of these familiar words as you hear it played by Bells of Joy on the Sunday before Thanksgiving: O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Let us be praying that God will do the following during these stewardship months: 1) Show us what we are to give through our time, talents, and treasures...and, 2) Help us discover that we are to be givers because God is the One who gives to us. Being a giver is “a stewardship matter”, Joel

Bells of Joy

If you missed one of the Sunday worship services on October 19, you may not have heard Frank Voltz on harp and Bells of Joy on handbells playing (joyfully) the piece “Gloria!” (Already there have been requests to play it again. Stay tuned.) Brother Voltz was commissioned by the handbell choir to write the piece in honor of Donna Cartner’s tenth year of service as handbells director. The piece will bear an inscription to show that it is in honor of Donna and played by New Philadelphia Bells of Joy. The photo shows Frank Voltz presenting a signed first copy of “Gloria!” to Donna Cartner before the October 19 worship services. November 23 at the 9 a.m. service, Bells of Joy will

BSA Troop 715 News

Troop 715 went to Camp Raven Knob October 1012 2014. The Troop made camp at a primitive camp site known as Mt Man, 1.3 miles off the beaten path. The Scouts completed a 5 mile hike, prepared their Patrol meals, played games, worked on camping skills and just enjoyed fellowship with each other. Cub Scout Pack 715 was also at Camp Raven Knob for the Annual Parent Son Camping trip. The Troop hiked down to their camp for fellowship and some hot Dutch oven fruit cobblers. Nine of the Scouts spent the weekend working as Staff members for the Parent Son event. Some of their “cheerful service” included, leading hikes around the lake, working the trading post and snack bar, knife safety station, camp site inspections an assisting with admissions. The Troop enjoyed assisting with the Fish Fry again this year. The Troop will visit the Transportation museum in Spencer NC, the weekend of November 8, 2014. If you have any questions about Scouting Please feel free to contact Scout Master Chris Vestal. 336-345-5434 or troop715npmc@gmail.com .

In keeping with the recent lessons shared in our children’s Sunday School classes on knowing our treasures and caring for others, several words of thanks are in order... Your participation in the food drive for Sunnyside on October 12 was wonderful! We truly did almost fill our Sunnyside Collection Boxes that morning. Remember that these bins are always waiting to receive items for Sunnyside in our Commons Area. November’s focus item is laundry detergent (12-16 load sizes); food staples for the pantry shelves are an ongoing need. Your smiles and engagement with our young ushers on October 19 with the collection of a special offering for CROP Walk was a treasure! The kids who participated felt so good after that experience. They had every reason to, as our 31 walkers turned in just shy of $1600 to help meet food needs here in Forsyth County and around the world. Many of you have also dropped off items for the New Philly Kids’ Operation Christmas Child project in November. Thank you for your sharing of small toys, t-shirts and art supplies in this fun service project of our Elementary-aged children.

New Philly Kids in November will meet on November 2 and 16 from 4-5:30pm in Fellowship Hall.

Parents remember to bring in any items you’ve been collecting in your own homes to be shared and packed at this session. On November 16, we will learn about Chrismons, symbols of Christ that can teach us about who Jesus is, and contribute to some of the decorations of the Christmas season here at New Philadelphia. Remember to mark December 7 on your calendars for the Children’s Christmas Lovefeast! Gather with our children and youth for this service at 10:05am in the Fellowship Hall. It will be a time for the young and the young at heart to enjoy the drama presented by our Middle High Youth and lovefeast shared by our Senior High Youth.

Kids of Faith, for 2nd through 5th graders, will gather during worship for a session on November 2. Children’s Worship, for 4 year olds through 1st graders, will explore the following stories in November: 2 - Parable of the Farmer and the Growing Seed 9 - Communion Sunday, no Children’s Worship 16 - Parable of the Leaven 23 - How the Church Tells Time 30 - The Prophets Show the Way to Bethlehem

If you have ever been on a mission trip or heard a missionary speak, you know that we are very blessed to live in the United States. Thank you for helping our committee. Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 2 Corinthians 9:6 (NIV) We invite you to come to our next meeting on November 2 at 5:00 pm in the Banquet Room. All are welcome. The speakers are informative, and it is a way to become more involved with New Philadelphia. Please consider joining us.

Once again for your holiday meals we will be smoking meat loaf, pork tenderloins, beef tenderloins, and 3-pound boneless turkey breasts. We will be cooking on Tuesday, November 25, before Thanksgiving and Monday, December 22, 2014. This year we have a new sponsor for this event, the Men's Fellowship at New Philadelphia Moravian Church. All proceeds will be deposited in a newly created Simmons-Dula Laurel Ridge Fund. The fund is named for Jerry Simmons and Clyde Dula who were two members of Men’s Fellowship that strongly believe in supporting Laurel Ridge Conference and Campground. When it was time to repair buildings, Jerry and Clyde would press the flesh and raise funds to support a work crew from the church. New Philadelphia adopted Laurels Cabins and Lodge. Funds from the meat sale will ensure annual funds to support these buildings as our work crews head up each spring to ready them for summer camp. Join all of us in honoring the memory of two loyal supporters of Laurel Ridge, Men's Fellowship, and most of all their Christian faith, Jerry Simmons and Clyde Dula.

Smoked Meat Sale - Thanksgiving & Christmas 2014 It is holiday cooking time or smoking time that is! Men’s Fellowship at New Philadelphia Moravian will be smoking pork tenderloin, boneless turkey breasts, beef tenderloins, and smoked meat loafs on Tuesday November 26 and Monday, December 22 for Christmas. All proceeds are directed to Simmons-Dula Fund for Laurel Ridge. This fund supports maintenance projects for the Laurels Lodge and four cabins. The pork tenderloins are $15.00 each and similar to those you find in Harris Teeter that range in size (uncooked) 1 to 1-1/4 pounds. They are seasoned with a spicy rub and smoked more or less for two hours. The 3-pound boneless turkey breast is seasoned with a rosemary garlic-based rub and smoked more or less four to five hours and priced at $19.00 each. Beef tenderloins range in size from 1.8 to 3.5 pounds and are $20.00 per pound so they range in price $36.00 to $70.00. Each beef tenderloin will be weighed and priced after it is smoked and packaged. The beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 120 degrees (rare) so you may reheat to desired doneness. We are adding by request smoked meat loafs at a cost of $17.00 each. Reheating directions will be included with your order. Order online at: http://tinyurl.com/npmc-meat-sale, or: Give your order to: Joey Transou, joey_transou@piedmontrealtygroup.com, 971-7804. MORAVIAN YOUNG ADULT CONVO 2015 July 5 - 13, 2015 CZECH REPUBLIC AND GERMANY! Every four years Moravian young adults in North America have the opportunity to come together for a Moravian Young Adult Convocation. The next Young Adult Convo is this summer as participants will travel to the Czech Republic and Germany to see many of the historic Moravian sites and to find inspiration and vision for current ministry. In the Czech Republic the trip includes visiting Prague (where John Hus preached), Kunwald (where the Unitas Fratrum, the early Moravian Church, first settled), and the Chalice Rocks (where members of the Unitas Fratrum met during their time of persecution). In Germany the trip includes visiting Herrnhut (where the Unitas Fratrum experienced a great spiritual renewal). All Moravian young adults ages 18 through 26 are invited to attend this summer’s Moravian Youth Adult Convo 2015. The dates for the trip are July 5–13, 2015. The theme for the trip is “Make the Moravian Journey Home and Catch a Vision for Our Future!” For more information about Convo 2015, please check its website at http://convo2015.wordpress. com/ or its Facebook page at “Moravian Young Adult Convo 2015”. You can register online at http://www. planetreg.com/MoravianYoungAdultConvo2015. There is a limited number of spaces for this trip, and registrations need to be in by January 15, 2015. If you have questions, please contact Doug Rights, Director of Youth, College and Young Adult Ministries at drights@mcsp.org or call (336) 722-8126. Young Adult Convo 2015 is sponsored by the Northern and Southern Provinces of the Moravian Church in North America and is for young adults ages 18-25 who graduated high school in 2014 or earlier. The registration deadline is January 15, 2015. Due to limited space for this trip, registrations will be on a first come first serve basis. It is expected that those who decide to take this pilgrimage will do so out of a desire to grow both spiritually and intellectually. The goal of this trip

will be to form a community of faith, energized for service and mission in the name of Jesus Christ, while learning the stories of our spiritual forbearers.
