New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk The Big News for this fall is the Installation of our new associate pastor, Joe Moore. Joe will be installed at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 9. Sunday School is at 10 a.m. and a unified worship service will take place at 11 a.m. There will not be a 9 a.m. service. Joe’s arrival makes this year’s stewardship very important. Our stewardship theme for 2016-2017 is “A City on a Hill.” The reference is not to Ronald Regean’s dream for America, but to the same text that Regean himself referenced. In Matthew 5:14-16 it was Jesus who said: “14You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. ” This text always reminds me of my old college roommate, R. Brent Lee, who used to say, “Talk, talk, talk; show me some action.” Today as never before our Christian faith is under scrutiny. People want to know if our actions mirror our confession of faith. Hopefully they do; critically, they must. The late Sam Shoemaker, a well known 20th century pastor and evangelists, was fond of reminding his parishioners that the issue for Christians is not “faith,” or “works,” but “a faith that works.” This is in perfect alignment with the New Testament idea of worship. There are two Greek words for worship the RSV translates with our English word, “Worship.” The first is “proskueno” which means to prostrate or humble one’s self before one who is greater. We worship God when we come before him in praise. The second is “latero,” which means to serve. We worship God when we serve him. The New Testament tells us that we serve God when we serve Christ, and we serve Christ by serving others. In Matthew 25 Jesus said that when we do good to the least of his brothers and sisters—and by his humanity he is brother to all, we do good to him. Likewise, in Mark Jesus said that
if we give even a cup of cold water to one of his disciples, we will not loose our reward.
Our Stewardship Emphasis Season starts on October 16, and the theme is “A Light on the Street.” On October 23, the theme is “A Light in the Middle of the Room.” On October 30 the theme is “A Light in the Dark.” Br. Michael Crane is our guest speaker on November 6, and commitment Sunday is November 13th. When Joe Moore arrives, Michael will be stepping down from his interim visitation position, but we will still get to hear him preach and teach from time to time. In the same way, we will continue the stewardship theme of “A City on a Hill” during our 2nd annual 12 Days of Service, which begins on December 1 and runs through December 12. This year we will do everything from making sandwiches for the homeless, to putting on several lovefeasts, one at Samaritan Inn, another at South Fork Elementary school. I am trying to clear my calendar so I can participate in the vast majority of the events that are planned. Surely one of the events we have planned will appeal to you. Watch your Moravian Magazine, read about the 12 Days of Service in this newsletter, or email clyde@newphilly. org for details. It is going to be an exciting year! Blessings, Worth

Christy’s PFRRKWJ Corner Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age October 2
Film Screening @ 4-5:15pm, tickets - $5 at the door Dinner/Panel Discussion @ 5:156:30 p.m., meal cost $5 per person (Funds raised at this event will be contributed to the Elizabeth Windsor Scholarship Fund) Older Elementary & Youth are welcome to attend free with a parent/guardian; children’s program provided for younger children. Film Overview: Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

Missions and Social Concerns Abigail Trogdon Mission Trip to the Philippines: On July 1, 2016 Abigail Trogdon went out on faith by teaming up with other young adults under Grow International Ministries on a mission trip to the Philippines to minister to street kids in a camp setting. The group traveled to Manila then drove to their base camp in San Mateo which was about one hour outside of Manila. At camp they helped with church services, Sunday school for the children and outreach to nearby villages. One of the most impactful parts of their trip was hosting camp for the children who literally live on the streets in Cubao which is part of Manilla. These children range in age from 9 to 18 years. They held two camps, one for the boys and one for the girls. They also provided a nutritiously fortified meal for the children during camp. This provided a safe place for the children to relax and have a meal in a loving environment. They played games with the children had worship services and shared the love of Jesus with them. The team also spent a few days in one of the tribal areas, working on a farm and helped to build a dam on a river so, the natives could wash their clothes safely on the river. There is no question that this trip has had a significant impact on Abby, she would like to go back to help the Philippine natives even more. Abby would like to thank all the members at New Philadelphia for their support and prayers during her trip. She returned to the US on July 29, 2016. Business meeting: August minutes were approved by members present Angela Trogdon provided update on the Missions committee Facebook page. Susan Cook made a request by email for support of her October 15, 2016 mission trip to Haiti. A motion was made by Bill Byrd to support her trip to Haiti with $300 and seconded by Betsy Johnson. Connections Ministry Team As fall approaches, the Connections Ministry team is working to plan ways to welcome our church’s many guests during the fall and Advent season. The team is also brainstorming new ways to connect our church to the needs within the surrounding local community. For example, at our most recent meeting we discussed the upcoming film event, SCREENAGERS: Growing up in the Digital Age, for parents hosted by the Discipleship Class and sponsored by the CE committee. We plan to welcome parents and their youth, who have been invited to attend from posters, Facebook postings, and flyers in local school homework folders. We’re working on ways to follow up with these guests and invite them to other activities that may interest them at our church. We see this as an exciting opportunity for our church to show love and support to families and to connect families within our city to our church. As we discussed this event, our committee decided to research other ideas for ways to meet the needs of our local community and connect them to our church. We hope to spend the next few meetings brainstorming and planning a specific event. If you have an idea, please feel free to pass it along to a Connections Ministry team member. In addition to our opportunities to welcome guests during the Advent season, we are also busy organizing and putting the final plans on our big event, the 12 Days of Service which begins December 1st. This is our largest activity of the year and through these service events, meets three of our goals: connecting members of our church to one another, connecting the members of our church to the community, and raising our church’s visibility within the community. Watch for ways you can get involved coming soon! The Connections Ministry team meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month in the church library at 6:30 pm. If you have a heart for connecting people to and within the church, we’d love to have you join us! You can email the chair, Tara Pitts, at deacons96@yahoo. com for more information.

News from Scout Troop 715 The weeks of July and August have been a very fun and busy time for Troop 715. Our calendar has been packed with events, and we have made use of the time out of school to get lots done. Our biggest event of the year that all scouts look forward to is Summer Camp. Summer Camp at Camp Raven Knob was an exciting time as always, as 32 boys got many badges and rank requirements completed. Lots of our newer scouts took advantage of a program called ‘Raven Scouts’ to earn their initial scout ranks, and prepare them for the ranks to come. Most boys got at least 2 or 3 badges completed, and many more that only had a few requirements left. When we broke camp, I think we all agreed that this may have been the best summer camp yet! As with previous summer months, we’ve had open doors to anyone who wants to come to the Scout Hut for Monday meetings. Many badges that had leftover requirements from Summer Camp were then completed, and lots of ranks got a head start on their Scoutmaster conferences and service hours. Once school started back in session, we held our Court of Honor, where we recognized each scout’s hard work
Page 9
and awarded Merit badges and ranks earned. Two of our senior scouts completed their Eagle Scout projects this summer as well. First, Alex Nagy had his project at Heritage Woods, where he held a talent show for the people who lived there. Many scouts, as well as friends and families, came to show their artistic and musical talents. The Instruments played ranged from guitar to saxophone, and those in attendance really enjoyed the show. Next, Dalton Vestal had a group of scouts get together to assemble his project, where he created 12 corn hole boards for West Forsyth High School. Scouts assisted in building the frames, putting on the fronts, and attaching the legs. After the boards were done being built, Dalton prepared them for delivery to the school. Both scouts will now prepare for their Eagle Scout Boards of Review, and we wish them the best! Now that summer is over, we are back to our regularly-scheduled meetings. We held elections for our leadership positions for the rest of the year, and we formed our new patrols that will help each scout learn teamwork and responsibility. We have upcoming campouts where we will be backpacking and canoeing, and are looking forward to doing some repair work on our Scout Hut. The rest of this year looks to be a wonderful time for the troop, and we can’t wait to see how much we accomplish in the months to come.
