New Philly News October|November 2017

4440 Country Club Road|Winston Salem www.newphilly.org|336.765.2331 Connect with us: In person, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, LinkedIn There’s a hymn in the Moravian Book of Worship that begins, “Christ engage us in your mission.” This newsletter includes many opportunities to be engaged in the mission of Christ; there are opportunities on every page! As we engage in these things, let’s remain focused on our larger mission, being servants of Jesus Christ. To be true servants of the Savior we need to be engaged in fellowship, in worship and in service. This year’s stewardship theme is “…we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the Gospel…” (1st Thessalonians 2:4). The message of the Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ lived, died, and rose again for us human beings and for our salvation. We are called to respond to the gospel by living it out in our fellowship, proclaiming it in our worship, sharing it through our service. As we consider our stewardship, we must think about how each of us can be more en-gaged than ever before in fellowship, worship, and service.. Our congregation is strongest when we are all together engaged in loving, living, and giving. Numbers make a difference! We feel every absence, for each of us is charged to be a part of the effort. Together, we are Christ’s body the church, his hands and feet in the world. We are his witnesses! In the next few days, you will receive a mailing

which includes a brochure that lifts up some of the many opportunities we have to live, proclaim, and serve the Good News of Jesus Christ. All this takes money. Therefore, the mailing will include a commitment card that you can use to make your financial pledge to the work of the congregation for the coming year. If you believe in New Philadelphia and it’s mission, please prayerfully consider how you and your family will support the work of this church in 2018. You may return your commitment card in the en-closed envelope, or bring it to worship on Commitment Sunday, October 29, 2017. Loving, living, and giving with you, Pastor Joe

12 Days of Service

CROP Walk

Friday, December 1 - Tuesday, December 12

Sunday, October 15

For the third consecutive year, members of New Philadelphia will have 12 chances to serve our community in a big way during the Advent season. This is the time for pulling out all of the stops as we discover new opportunities for meaningful service to men, women, children and families right here in our “neck of the woods.”

CROP Walk 2017 will be October 15.

Our 12 Days of Service will begin on Friday, December 1st. Some familiar projects will be available, such as preparing lunch bags for City with Dwellings and taking a Lovefeast to Samaritan Ministries. We’ll also welcome children from South Fork Elementary School as they assemble a “putz” representing our neighborhood 100 years ago.

Page 6

The CROP Walk supports hunger alleviation programs. Money raised is split between three organizations: Church World Service, Crisis Control Ministry and Sunnyside Ministry to help our neighbors in need. The New Phillies and others will be representing New Philadelphia in this year’s CROP Walk. Donations will be collected October 8 and 15 after each worship service. Please support our New Philly kids as they support their neighbors!

There will be new projects, too. Working with Chaplain Robert Wolfe and the Friends of Moravian Prison Ministry, we’ll hold a men’s clothing drive to provide gently used items that will help inmates transition into the workplace. Start considering now how your small groups, your friends and your family members will participate in the 2017 12 Days of Service. As has been our experience for the past two years, the Advent season becomes even more special when we are strengthening our connections with our community and with each other through service. For more information, pleases contact Clyde Manning 336-765-2331 ext. 306 Hey there! Keep your information updated - call or email the church office with your mailing address, phone number, email address. And if you are a college student or the parent of one, please send us a college address, too! Thank you for your help!

Missions and Social Concerns

Mohamed and Safiatu Braima – Moravian Ministry in Sierra Leone:

Mohamed and Safiatu gave a very enlightening update on Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone ministry began in 2006 when Mohamed and Safiatu returned to their village in Sierra Leone, West Africa after the civil war there ended. Prior to returning they lived and worked in the Charlotte area for approximately 30 years but Mohamed had a plan because in his mid-fifties he went to seminary and became an ordained minister. During the past 10 years the ministry has supported many projects in the village such as building a library, a church, a mission house, a middle school, a high school and a solar power system to power the school and the Braima’s home. The church was the first Moravian Church in Sierra Leone. Mohamed also started two more churches in neighboring villages and two more house-churches in other villages, for a total of five new Moravian congregations. The Braima’s are on a mission with Little Church on the Lane to raise $100,000 to purchase a new vehicle and to complete a radio station. The vehicle is badly needed to allow the Braima’s to visit all the churches and it also serves as an ambulance to transport the sick or injured. The good news, is the vehicle has been purchased and will be shipped in three weeks, however, there will be custom duties and maintenance cost. The radio station tower for the antenna has been built; however, there is a great need for a building and transmitting equipment. This radio station when complete will be used to spread the gospel and religious music to parts of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. If you are so moved to support this growing ministry you can make checks payable to Sierra Leone Ministry and mail to Little Church on the Lane, 522 Moravian Lane, Charlotte, NC 28207. You may also sign up to make monthly contributions by contacting Little Church on the Lane. Your prayers and financial support would be greatly appreciated.

Because the attendance of our Children’s and Christmas Eve Lovefeasts continues to grow, we will expand our decorations again this year to insure that the Fellowship Hall is as beautiful as our sanctuary. A colorful and bold “Poinsettia Christmas Tree,” will add immeasurably to the appearance of our Fellowship Hall during the Advent and Christmas Season, and then, when the Poinsettias themselves are distributed, will provide meaningful memories of the season to many. You may be a part of this overall decorating plan through contributions in honor of or in memory of your loved ones. Open Door Lunch October and November Information

Join us on Wednesday, October 4th at 11:30 a.m. for Open Door Lunch. We’ll enjoy lasagna together and hear from Robert Wolfe, Moravian chaplain at the Forsyth Jail and Prison. Through the Friends of the Moravian Prison Ministry, Chaplain Wolfe has been touching the lives of both inmates and their families, for over a decade.

Page 13

These tasks require about one hour. Each Open Door event supports a local ministry with an average gift of $500 from donations collected. Through our work together, we have made a real difference in our community. We are pleased to welcome Jessica Siple to our

New Philadelphia church family. She will be serving as an Organist and the Director of our Children and Youth Choirs.

In November, we’ll gather to learn more about the Moravian relief efforts in those areas that have been hit hardest by recent hurricanes and storms. Our donations will support the work being done by Moravian teams of volunteers ministering in Texas, Florida and beyond.

Jessica has over 20 years experience as a church organist and choir director. The daughter of a Baptist minister, she has previously served in Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist congregations. She is also a piano teacher, specializing in the Suzuki method. Jessica comes to us from St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Remember that 100% of the Open Door donations go to the direct services of the groups we feature. If you have a heart for prison ministry and for those who have suffered from recent natural disasters, come enjoy the fellowship of Open Door and help us put “feet on the gospel.”

She will begin her work here at New Philadelphia on October 22.

Open Door Outreach Needs Your Help! Many hands make light work! In that spirit, Open Door needs a few good men and women to add to the volunteer team. Specifically, we’re seeking the following for October 4th: • 1 additional driver to deliver meals to homebound church members • 2 workers to bus tables • 2 people to help clean the kitchen after lunch

Mary Hege will continue to serve in our Music Ministry. New Philadelphia will host their annual Fall Blood Drive from 2 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 27. This event is held in the fellowship hall. To schedule an appointment, please contact Michael Crane 336-293-6395 Appointments preferred but Walkins are welcome! A photo id is required.
