Strategic Goals Adopted December 2013
Last fall we solicited input from the church regarding a Visioning and Goal Setting Exercise. We received hundreds of responses. Then more than 40 members of our congregation met over a weekend with Br. Bishop D. Wayne Burkett to collate and interpret those responses. Over the weekend we developed a list of tactical goals, and that was fun. Then we had a smaller team meet to refine those tactical goals into a series of strategic goals for submission to the Joint Board. The Joint Board adopted them at our December Meeting. Strategic Goals are different from tactical goals; they are less specific. They say, “Accomplish this objective.” They do not spell out how to accomplish it. Each of these strategic goals grew out of tactical goals, and the boards will keep all of those tactics in mind, as we continue to seek best way accomplish these strategic goals. Many of these goals are already in the works, like the Strategic Goal 10, which is featured this month in “Across the Pastor’s Desk.” A timeline is being established for all others. The Boards will endeavor to evaluate and accomplish each of these strategic goals with the continued input and assistance of the congregation. Some may yet be “folded together.” Some are about evaluating our present way of doing things, and they may simply state that. Whatever the case, we want you to know that our staff and boards are working on these goals, and that the work is ongoing. You will be hearing more about these goals in the future. ~ The Pastor 1. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to look for the full seat, identifying and reaching out to visitors with intentionality, so that we might respond to their presence among us with hospitality. 2. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to look for the empty seat, noting the sudden and continual absence of individual church members from worship and/or from Sunday school. Where members have hitherto belonged and “dropped-out,” we will seek to restore them to their place. Where visitors and members have yet to find a place in a Sunday school class or BAG we will seek to help them find it. 3. Strategic Goal: We will evaluate the way we elect our boards to insure that all our constituencies are properly represented. 4. Strategic Goal: We will encourage all our members to advance God’s ministry to God’s people through their gifts of gratitude for God’s goodness, love and blessings by creating 1) a culture within the church that empowers members to serve Christ using their Godgiven talents and blessings and 2) the necessary structure to support good stewardship of these God-given talents and blessings. 5. Strategic Goal: We will begin a recycle program that will contribute to the welfare of environment.
6. Strategic Goal: We will endeavor to conduct a more reverent Easter Morning Service. 7. Strategic Goal: We will use all appropriate means to inform the congregation of mission opportunities and concerns. 8. Strategic Goal: In the next calendar year the Mission Committee will plan and execute one family oriented mission project that will include participants from multiple Sunday school classes and other BAG’s. 9. Strategic Goal: The full Christian Education Committee will meet with representatives from all the adult Sunday school classes at least twice each year. 10. Strategic Goal: We will embrace children and adults with disabilities/special needs and offer additional classes and programing, or, where appropriate, a shadowing program. 11. Strategic Goal: New Philadelphia will work to improve the sense of belonging, common purpose, and fellowship between those who attend the 9:00 a.m. service and the 11:10 a.m. service in order to enhance our ability to share our faith in Christ that we might equip more and more disciples to serve the cause of Christ. 12. Strategic Goal: We will seek to create an inviting and informative worship space so that our children can engage in Godly Play. 13. Strategic Goal: We will continuously evaluate our worship services to better understand and serve our present and future constituencies. 14. Strategic Goal: We will make our church more visitor friendly by making appropriate use of new technologies in our church’s ministry and outreach. Our program of high tech must compliment and continue to facilitate a program of high touch. 15. Strategic Goal: We will designate and develop an inviting space near the sanctuary that can be used for various ministry, educational, and fellowship activities. It will be a gathering place that serves both church members and guests allowing opportunity for fellowship across Sunday services and supporting special events held in the church. 16. Strategic Goal: We will repurpose our church library space as an information center and meeting place. We will consider adding a “bookstore” that will be open during times of high traffic and furthers the mission of the Moravian church.
New Philadelphia News From The Pastor’s Desk Recapturing the Reverence in the Resurrection Service Traditionally, the Resurrection Service, which takes place after Easter Worship in the sanctuary, began with the pastor reading the Easter Morning Liturgy from the balcony that overlooks the front entrance to the Church. At the conclusion of that portion of the liturgy, the pastor came down, and followed the band to God's Acre. All worshipers, including the choir followed the pastor, and all non-essential communication was kept to a minimum. A Silent Procession was the goal. Of course, that was before we built so many buildings, and created so many different ways of leaving the church, and entering the graveyard. Over the years, the movement to the graveyard lost all form. People were understandably eager to take up a position near the graves of their loved ones, and they moved quickly to do so. It was still a great service; but many of us felt it was once even better, more reverent, more moving, a conscious deliberate act of corporate worship. This year we would like to recreate the experience of years in the not too distant past. This year our Ushers will try to channel all worshipers into this procession to pass through the main entrance to God's Acre: Band, Pastor, Choir, and then the Congregation. We would like to give the band time to process to the graveyard, and start playing antiphonaly, and we would like to have the pastor who is conducting the service lead everyone except the band through the Main Gate of God's Acre. People who have special needs, especially those in wheel chairs will be admitted through the other gates, and once the band, pastor, and choir is in place, the other gates will be opened to everyone. We will need extra ushers to accomplish our goal. If you are willing to help, please contact
Fred Flynt (fflynt@triad.rr.com), or Dick Rodden (richardrodden@hotmail.com). So, too, if you attend Easter Worship, and are not staying for the Resurrection Service, it would help if you park in the east lot (on the Preschool/Office Wing side of the church), or off campus, in one of the adjacent office parking lots. Otherwise, you may be asked to sit in your car until the processional passes. We think this return to a more structured and orderly Resurrection Service will add immensely to this wonderful act of corporate worship. We trust it is not an inconvenience to the congregation; but a blessing, and we hope that everyone who reads this will understand and appreciate our effort. "The Lord is Risen!"

This month, our Middle High and Senior High Youth are going on a hiking trip during the afternoon of Sunday, April 6. The youth are also helping with the Easter Egg Hunt on April 19! Our Middle Highs will help hide the eggs, while our Senior Highs will be selling biscuits, hot dogs, and other items as a fundraiser. These funds will help offset the costs for our Senior High mission trip to Jamaica this summer, during the week of July 5-12. Also this month, there is a Moravian Youth Rally at Friedberg Moravian on April 27, and we'll be preparing for Youth Sunday on May 4. We're looking forward to this meaningful time of worship for our congregation, with our church's youth leading all parts of the service. In between worship services, we'll have a reception for youth and families. I look forward to seeing you in April! In Christ, The Rev. John G. Rights

Bells of Joy
New Philadelphia Moravian Church - April
As you read this, we will be about 20 days into Lent and 20 days from the culmination of this time of deep reflection when we will celebrate Easter. Some of these days during this Lenten season have been dark and cold and gloomy with ice and storms and fog. The daffodils, heavy with ice, have touched the ground, and they look as if they will surely break from the weight of the freeze. A quick storm with high winds took down a pine tree in front of New Philadelphia as we practiced Easter music one evening. Perhaps some of us have felt as if we too have been bent and nearly broken by other storms and unexpected change in our lives. As we pray the Easter morning liturgy, “The Lord is risen,” and the response, “The Lord is risen indeed,” may the joy that Jesus lives fill our hearts, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7). Bells of Joy has practiced a hopeful and beautiful hymn to share on Easter morning: Bill and Gloria Gaither’s “Because He Lives.” We will play Cynthia Dobrinski’s arrangement of the hymn using five octaves of handbells and handchimes, and we will use some techniques that will share this bold and affirming hymn that assures us that Jesus lives as we play it this Easter morning. As the chorus says: Because He lives, I can face tomorrow Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know, I know, He holds the future And life is worth the living just because He lives. “Because He Lives” was written during a low time in the lives of Bill Gaither and his wife Gloria, who were expecting a baby at the time and wondered whether bringing a child into a world of sorrow was good. The gift of writing the song affirmed their hope for the child and the world, and we hope that it will do that for you too. Cindi Iobst Jones plays handbells in the middle of the five octaves our bell choir plays. Cindi plays D5 and
Page 7
E5 with the sharps and flats that go with those notes. She has played for New Philadelphia for about 25 years, and as she has played she has realized that there are many ways to praise the Lord. Playing handbells is certainly one of them for Cindi. Cindi’s father, Bishop Robert Iobst, especially loved hearing the bells and would often listen outside the bell room during practices. We are reminded of his presence as we play the large handchimes, part of a gift in memory of Rt. Rev. Iobst, in praise of the Lord. In the preface to the hymnals we use in the Moravian church, Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf ’s explanation is that “The hymnal is a kind of response to the Bible, an echo and an extension thereof. In the Bible one perceives how the Lord communicates with people, and in the hymnal, how people communicate with the Lord.” Zinzendorf ’s description of hymns as part of communication with God continues to be an inspiration for Kay Windsor, the newest member of the bell choir, as she learns to be one part of the whole instrument that the bell choir becomes as they play together. Bells of Joy plays on bells ranging from a few ounces in weight to about 10 pounds in weight. Kay plays A3 and G3 handbells and handchimes and the sharps and flats associated with those notes, some of the larger, heavier bells. Kay has played for three years with the choir. Even as bell choir members are individuals, we are working together, finding harmony as a way to praise God and share that with the congregation. We hope that is evident to all--especially at Easter.

Missions Committee News The purpose of our committee is to disperse monies donated by the congregation locally and abroad. We are an open committee and invite anyone in the congregation to attend and bring to our attention any needs that we might be able to meet. We want to get more involved with the RCC (Regional Council of Churches) and work with the other Moravian churches in our area. We have invited the RCC representatives from our church to join us at the April Meeting to give us suggestions in working with those churches. Please come and help us to make decisions for better outreach to our communities and our service as a congregation for the Lord. There are many needs right in our back yard but we have to know what they are in order to help. This hopefully will open up some opportunities for all of us. Monies dispersed in March : $2000 Amani Childrens Foundation $3000 Caroline and Michael Woo $670 Charity and Kevin Manous. Update on Kevin and Charity Manous: Did you know they are expecting a third child? How exciting, please keep them in your prayers! Charity was able to attend a small ladies’ retreat in February with the local ladies who live nearby. Kevin will be in a conference March 10-17 with Valleydale Church’s World Reach in the US. After the conference Valleydale will be sending a team to visit from March 23-28.
