New Philadelphia News Go to dark Gethsemane, Ye who feel the tempter’s power; your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with him one bitter hour. Turn not from his griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray. Holy Week is one of the most important weeks of the year. Beginning with Palm Sunday and leading up to Easter, those seven days tell the story of the passion of our Lord and Savior. The week allows us to experience Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem; his confrontations with the Pharisees; his teaching the crowds; his Last Supper with his disciples; his prayer and resolve in the garden; his arrest, trial, and crucifixion; his suffering and death on the cross. Holy Week is holy. It is meant to be a time that is “set apart” for reflection and contemplation on the last week of our Savior’s earthly life and the events of his passion. The Moravian church has always placed an emphasis on the importance of this week. Dating back to the days of Count Zinzendorf, the Readings for Holy Week provide us with the the complete scriptural account of Jesus’ last week. It is important to participate in the Holy Week reading services, to set apart time each evening to come to church and reflect upon what our Savior said and did that led him to the cross and grave, that caused him to suffer and die, for us and for our salvation. This year at New Philadelphia, we are hoping to give new life to the sharing of the old, old story as we create a “prayer garden” in our sanctuary. The garden will provide us a place for worship and reflection, for prayer and contemplation as we experience this most holy week. The prayer garden will serve as the setting for our worship, for our prayer, for our contemplations during this holy week. Holy Week this year begins on Palm Sunday, April 9. During our morning worship we will celebrate the coming of our Lord and Savior by singing Hosanna,
blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord! Our Holy Week journey will continue as we have reading services each evening, Monday through Friday, beginning at 7 p.m.. We will celebrate Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday and a lovefeast on Good Friday. Please make the effort to set this week, every day of this week, apart from your typical routines and activities so that you may come to the garden and experience holy week. Make it your goal and commitment to journey with Jesus every step of the way.
Lord, I’ll praise thee now and ever, who for me was crucified; for thy agony, dear Savior, for thy wounds and pierced side, for thy love, so tried, unending, for thy death, all deaths transcending. For thy death and love divine, Lord, I’ll be forever thine. Pastor Moore

Missions and Social Concerns
Cuba Mission Trip Joe Jarvis, Bruce Ledwith, Evon Crooks Sr, Justin Rabbach, Ron Vogler and Tommy Cole traveled to Cuba from February 8 to February 20. They engaged in worshiping, held discussions on various projects and visited with fellowship groups from Guantanamo to Havana, a distance of approximately 700 miles. There are currently 18 worshiping groups across Cuba. Cuba has 5 ordained ministers and 13 lay pastors. This was a very inspiring and successful trip. Below are a few highlights of the trip: The group in Santayana worshiped in an open garage behind the pastor’s house for several years and have grown significantly. Last year, ARMF purchased the adjacent house with the intent of renovating it into a church to provide more space. When the team arrived in Santayana and saw the new church they were speechless. The congregation had renovated the house into a church. When asked how they paid for the materials and work. The answer was simple. They sold 25 goats to pay for the renovation. If you recall a few years ago ARMF provided funding to start a goat herd on the church farm. That goat herd grew to about 80 animals. This was truly a good example of how the Santayana church has multiplied their resource. The ARMF joint goal with fellowships across Cuba is to make them self-sufficient. To accomplish this mission, ARMF has invested in the Santayana church farm by providing start-up funds to clear the land, purchase goats and cows, and dig a well for water. They are already reaping the benefits from the goats. They currently have 4 cows and will be selling milk soon. There are also chickens, turkeys, pigs, and bees for honey production on the farm. This has been truly inspiring to the ARMF team; it shows that a little help can yield big benefits. The group in Jaguey Grande has also outgrown the pastor’s garage so last year ARMF also purchased a house across from the pastor’s house with the intent of renovating into a church. On arrival they have cleaned and painted and are currently using for worship. On our arrival they hosted a dinner for church members and the ARMF team. This was very inspiring. Much renovation work to be done here. The ARMF team also met with Armando Rusindo and
Page 6
his pastors to discuss NPMC youth mission trip this summer. Information was obtained will be passed on to the youth leaders. The Cuban youth are very active in worship across Cuba and in some cases make up more than 50% of congregations. God is working in Cuba; the trip was a very inspiring trip. Business meeting February 2017 minutes were approved by members present. Income and disbursements i. March 2017 beginning balance $18,354.74 ii. March 2017 disbursement approvals: Michael and Caroline Woo $3000; ARMF for Cuba Mission $2500. iii. Contributions during February 2017 was $3,488.45 Meeting and speaker schedule April 9 Rev.
