June Newsletter 2016

New Philadelphia News It is almost summer, and we have several goals for the season.

First, we hope to add an associate pastor. We are very much committed to the call process, but it is an involved negotiation involving a number of partners: 1) The Joint Board of New Philadelphia 2) The Provincial Elder’s Conference 3) The Candidates for the position identified by the PEC. This kind of thing does not go quickly, but those of us who have been participating have seen God’s Spirit at work. We believe that the conclusion of the process will be blessed. Continue to pray to this end. Second, we have added a part-time Minister of Visitation who we hope will serve us for at least 90 days, even if the call is filled before that time. At the end of 90 days both parties have the right to renegotiate; and, as is standard practice, either party can terminate with a short notice. We are pleased to welcome Br. Michael Crane to this position. Michael and his wife Valerie have been attending the church for more than half-a-year, and officially joined on Palm Sunday. Michael is an ordained American Baptist Pastor with many years of experience. He has served in large, multiple staff churches; he has served solo pastorates; and he has served his denomination as a director of a camp and conference center. Michael has preached here several times with glowing reviews. He now adds 20 hours per week of service to the congregation. His tasks include working in partnership with Steve Gray and our musicians to fine tune the 11:10 service. Unlike this pastor, Michael is familiar with more recent develops in music and worship. Michael will also be in the office on Mondays, attend staff meetings, assist in proofreading the Newsletter and bulletins, work on other assigned tasks, and will be making strategic home visits and working with groups within the church as needed. Michael and Valerie are members of the Inklings Sunday School Class, attend the 11:10 service, and have been in church almost every time the door is open for additional congregational activities. They have a daughter, Elisa, who is a student at High Point University. Give the Cranes your famous welcome,

and we will not go wrong. Michael indicates that he and Valerie are already having a great time among us.

Third, this is the summer we want to work through our new and revised Church Constitution. Copies will be available online by June 15, 2016 at http://newphilly. org/pdf/newconstitution.pdf. We will be announcing at least one special Council Meetings for discussion of the changes, and we will have a straight up and down vote at our October 23rd Congregational Council. Hard copies will also be available in the church office as of June 15th. Why the changes? Two reasons: 1) To bring our constitution into line with the Book of Order and our present practice. 2) To enhance our institutional memory. You will be hearing a lot more about the meetings, etc. We think you will universally approve the changes. Blessings,

The Pastor

Missions and Social Concerns Help Our People Eat Marty and Ben Tennille gave a presentation on Help Our People Eat (HOPE). They were inspired by their preacher at, Centenary United Methodist, who commented on a sermon in the spring of 2013 that a visitor who is a school principal thanked the church for helping with a backpack program and lamented that the food in the backpacks didn’t last all weekend, and children were often hungry on Sunday’s and couldn’t learn on Mondays. The Tennille’s decided that Sundays should be a day of hope not a day of hunger so they researched programs around the country and came up with “HOPE”. Since HOPE started in 2013 it has mushroomed into something which the entire community can be proud. In Forsyth county approximately 40,000 children do not know from where their next meal will be coming. A group of volunteers meet on Saturdays to assemble healthy bag lunches based on items received from Second Harvest Food Bank and fresh food donated by Vernon Produce Co. These bags are then distributed on Sundays by volunteers. These volunteers sit with the children while they eat and talk with then on life and career choices. HOPE currently has a food truck, which make deliveries to 24 locations in Forsyth County every Sunday. They feed approximately 1000 children with over 1500 lbs. of fruits and vegetables each Sunday. HOPE currently operates out of a vacant Wake Forest building on Deacon Blvd. However, they have outgrown this building and currently have plans to build a new $500,000 facility in the Kimberly Park area. Currently they have raised $450,000 and will accept contributions to reach their goal. The current plan is to educate the people they serve by teaching healthy cooking and eating. If you would like to volunteer in teaching healthy cooking you may contact HOPE 336-816-0801. At the new facility they will be partnering with Sawtooth Center to teach art classes for the pre-schoolers. To learn more about HOPE go to their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hopeofwinstonsalem/ Business Meeting: Abigail Trogdon gave a presentation on her up-

Hayle Geis made a request via email for her upcoming Antioch mission trip to Alaska from June 28 to July 30, 2016. She will be organizing Vacation Bible School in preparation for the New Philly youth mission for the local youths. Troxler’s made a motion for $300 to support Hayle in her mission and seconded by Jack Geis. Angela Trogdon made a proposal to establish a facebook page for the missions committee. Fall & Christmas Decor White Elephant Sale

On November 6, 2016, Women’s Fellowship is going to try something new. We are going to have a fall and Christmas Decor White Elephant Sale. For this event, we need donations of new or gently used fall and Christmas decorations. As you are going through your decorations during this season, please keep this in mind and perhaps start a collection box for items you would like to donate to this sale. We will be accepting these items a week before the sale next year. It will be a great way to de-clutter while helping Women’s Fellowship support some great causes.

New Philadelphia Moravian Church June 2016 During the month of May Boy Scout Troop 715 went on a camping trip to the Virginia Creeper Trail in southwestern Virginia. The Virginia Creeper is a 35 mile multi-purpose trail that is built on top of an old train track. While we were there, we rode bikes along the trail and camped. As school is ending, the boy scouts are beginning to get excited about going to summer camp at Camp Raven Knob. There we will take part in activities such as swimming, hiking, camping, and earning merit badges. Our scouts who are eligible to join the Order of the Arrow will be tapped into that as well. Thank you New Philadelphia Moravian for your support of our troop! The Open Door Lunch team is happy to announce that $1,001 was raised on May 4th in support of the upcoming youth mission trip to Bethel, Alaska. On behalf of NPMC Youth, Dean Tickle attended the lunch and described the impact recent missions trips have had on his life and what he’s hoping to experience in Bethel as he and other youth hold a weeklong Bible School for local children there.
