New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friend(s): This year we swapped “stewardship” for “discipleship.” It is a good trade. Stewardship is nothing without discipleship. In 1st Corinthians 13:3, Paul said, “If (we) give away all (we) have, and deliver our (bodies) to be burned and have not love, we gain nothing.” There is stewardship without discipleship, but there is no discipleship without stewardship. Jesus said that we cannot serve God and money. He certainly does not mean that money is bad. Jesus and his disciples used money. Rather, he means that it is bad when we allow money to be the primary influence in our decisions, whether we make those decisions as individuals, or as a congregation. Our congregation puts money in its proper place when we contribute almost $200,000 each year to the work of the Moravian Church, and more besides to missions and ministries in our community and world. As individuals, we put money in its proper place when

set aside a certain amount, usually according to a percentage, and give it to God’s work. Because I am bold enough to believe that we are doing God’s work, I personally set aside a percentage of my income and give it to the General Fund at New Philadelphia Moravian Church. I hope that you will join me in the conviction that what we are doing at New Philadelphia is important to God, and pledge your support to our congregation in the New Year. Oh, this fall, this is all you will hear from us about money. We dedicated the four weeks of our traditional fall stewardship campaign to talking about discipleship. Come out and help us “Serve like Jesus, Love like Jesus, and Live like Jesus. If you missed any of the sermons in that series, you can hear them or view them at www.newphilly.org. Blessings, Pastor Green

Elayne, my parents, and I wish to thank the congregation for the many kindnesses extended to us over the last month. My illness and downtime came out of the blue, and was complicated by the fragile health of both my aging parents. The meals you provided, whether delivered by you, or picked-up by us with gift cards to K&W, etc., were most welcome, and enabled Elayne to keep up her strength and retain her sanity. Likewise, the books were most welcome, every single title is interesting, and each one is in my reading queue. We continue to be amazed by the generosity of the New Philadelphia Congregation. ~ Pastor Green

...that you can make donations online for The Moravian Disaster Response (MDR) Team—which is always ready to help out with natural disasters? MDR was there for Katrina, Malawi, Nepal, and Burundi, and we will soon be sending funds for the Syrian Refugees. We encourage that donations be designated for general disaster relief so that the BWM has the flexibility to respond immediately to financial needs that arise in the face of disaster.

Plan now to join the Funtastics on Thursday, November 19 when our speaker will be WinstonSalem Mayor, Allen Joines. Coffee will be served at 10:00 followed by Mr Joines at 10:30. Missions and Social Concerns Missions and Social Concerns met on Sunday October 11. Abbey and Elizabeth Trogden presented a program on their mission trip to Estonia. This is not a Christian country and only 2% of the population profess to be Christians. Because of the suppression of the government for so long, those who were Christians lost their faith. The new generation coming are seeking. Pray for this country! Abbey and Elizabeth were with a team of 16 who taught and English Camp. There were approximately 60 Estonian youth that attended. Elizabeth reported that 3 made a profession of faith during the camp. Progress will be slow but seeds are being planted. Our disbursements for October are $670 for Charity and Kevin Manous, $2000 for Samaritans Purse. It was decided to give $300 each to the mission team going to Cuba in November-Joe Jarvis, Bruce Ledwith, Fred Flynt, Evon Crooks, and Ron Vogler. They will be carrying with them 200 Spanish bibles donated by the Gideons and 1000 of our new “What is a Moravian?” brochures. They will be able to participate in the dedication of the Moravian Building in Havana and also dedication of the Childrens

Center purchased by the Moravian Church in Holland. Thanks to all who helped with the October Mission Fair. I think everyone enjoyed the children from South Fork singing for us! Nine local agencies were represented and we hope that through their presentation many from our congregation will step up and volunteer their services with one of them. A big thank you to all who contributed toward the Cuba Water Project. Final numbers will come in on October 18. An estimate at this point is $5400.00. The mission team going in November from NPMC will be installing this system. Our next meeting will be November 8 at 5:00 in the Banquet Room. Our comittee is an open committee and everyone is invited. Please keep missions and the Moravian Church in your prayers.

Twelve Days of Service Many new opportunities to serve our community are being offered this year through our Connections Ministry. Called Twelve Days of Service, December 1 – 12 is being set aside as a time of ramped-up community involvement from our congregation. The activities are varied so that everyone – young and old, groups, families and individuals – can participate and connect with those in need right here in WinstonSalem. While many of you are already involved in on-going scheduled volunteer activities, we encourage all to challenge themselves to do even more during this 12day period. Detailed information and sign-up sheets will be available by mid-November. Some of the organizations that will benefit from Twelve Days of Service are: Sunnyside Ministry; South Fork School; Samaritan Ministries; Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry; and City with Dwellings. Let’s make Christmas 2015 one that strengthens our church’s impact as we start asking how we can serve like Jesus?

New Philadelphia Moravian Church - November 2015 “This month has been an awesome month for the youth of New Philadelphia. We had a very successful Boston Butt fundraiser. A big thank you to everyone in and out of the congregation who purchased some pork! A HUGE thank you is due to Joey and Cliff for making this fundraiser possible! I think we can all agree at how amazing they tasted! Finally a big thank you and congratulations to all of the youth and parents who volunteered numerous hours to make sure we had a successful fundraiser!

Men’s Fellowship at New Philadelphia Moravian will be smoking pork tenderloin, boneless turkey breasts, beef tenderloins, and smoked meat loafs on Tuesday November 22 and Tuesday, December 22 for Christmas. All proceeds are directed to Simmons-Dula Fund for Laurel Ridge. This fund supports maintenance projects for the Laurels Lodge, four cabins, and other Laurel Ridge projects. The pork tenderloins are $15.00 each and similar to those you find in Harris Teeter that range in size (uncooked) 1 to 1-1/4 pounds. They are seasoned with a spicy rub and smoked more or less for two hours. The 3-pound boneless turkey breast is seasoned with a rosemary garlic-based rub and smoked more or less four to five hours and priced at $20.00 each. Poinsettia Orders Christmas is creeping in so the time to plan the decorations for the church is almost here. Because the attendance of our Children’s and Christmas Eve Lovefeasts continues to grow, we will expand our decorations again this year to include the Fellowship Hall is as beautiful as our sanctuary. A colorful and bold “Poinsettia Christmas Tree,” will add immeasurably to the appearance of our Fellowship Hall during the Advent and Christmas Season, and then, when the Poinsettias themselves are distributed, will provide meaningful memories of the season to many. You may be a part of this overall decorating plan through contributions in honor of or in memory of your loved ones. All gifts will be acknowledged in
