New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk

At Pentecost it is well to look at the role of the Holy Spirit. 1.The Spirit was active in Creation. Gen. 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 2.The Spirit bears witness to Christ. 8 And when (the Counselor) comes, he will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 3.The Character of the Holy Spirit is fixed by Christ, from his birth to his glorification---on the cross. John 7:39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 4.The Spirit is the guarantor of all that believers will receive in Christ. 13 In (Christ) you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. 5. All Christians receive the Spirit. Rom. 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Any one who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 6.The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us. Rom. 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 7.The Holy Spirit is given as a seal, and we are encouraged not to grieve the Spirit who is active in the Re-Creation. Eph. 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. There are other functions of God’s Spirit. These are intended to start us thinking. Pastor Green

Congratulations to our Elizabeth Windsor Memorial Scholarship recipients for the 2013-14 academic year: Addison Cheek, Hayley Geis, and Tom Welborn

Pastor John Writes:

Congratulations to all of our high school graduates! This year’s graduates include Sydney Chrysson, Hayley Geis, Andrew Lundgren, Emily Mock, Nicholas Peduto, Michael Walters, and Tom Welborn. Best wishes to all of our graduates as they move on to new endeavors! As the school year comes to a close, we are thankful for all of the youth and youth leaders (in particular, Sara Ebbers and Ross McNeil) who have made this such an incredible year. We’re already looking forward to a summer full of activities. Be sure to register for a week of summer camp at Laurel Ridge, if you haven’t already! Laurel Ridge brochures are available in the church office, if you need one, or you may register through www. laurelridge.org. New Philadelphia provides a scholarship of half the cost for church members to attend a week of Laurel Ridge camp; this amount is $187.50 for Middle High and Senior High camps. We continue to raise funds for our mission trips this summer, including our baked potato & salad luncheon on Sunday, June 2. Our Senior High youth will be serving on Staten Island, New York, from July 6-13, in an effort to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Middle High and Senior High youth are invited to participate in Eco Mission Camp at Laurel Ridge from July 28-August 2, with projects focusing on helping the environment in the Ashe & Alleghany County area. Please keep these trips in your thoughts and prayers! May God bless you this summer, and always. In Christ,

The Rev. John G. Rights

Spotlight on............Ethel Nail

Our Spotlight features church members who currently are unable to actively worship at New Philadelphia.

Ethel Nail has the right to offer advice.

After all, she’s learned a thing or two in her (almost) 100 years. On the key to a successful marriage: “Be true to each other. Be honest with everything.” Ethel was married to husband, Walter, for almost 74 years. “He was so proud that we had lived together for so long. He loved home and loved for us to be here together.” Walter died in 2007, and Ethel still has a calendar from that year hanging from the side of the refrigerator. Her entry on November 24 reads simply: “Walter went home to be with the Lord.” She coped with the loss by “praying it through.” She misses him still, but when the loneliness comes over her, “I just pray to the Lord that He’ll take it off of my mind, and He does.” On strong families: “Walter enjoyed the family being together, especially on Sundays.” “He would say, ‘Mom, you’re killing yourself, doing all this work for the family.’ I’d say, ‘Walter, I enjoy it…..and you’re getting the meals, too!’ ” The Nails had two sons, Eugene and Kenneth. Ethel admits to being especially strict with Gene, because

Page 2

he was the oldest. The boys didn’t miss church and Ethel worked with the primary age children in Sunday School, coaching them as they memorized their “pearls.” Most importantly, “On Sunday we rested.” Ethel’s family has grown, and now includes two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, 9 greatgrandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild (with another soon to be born). She also remains close to her two living siblings, Curtis, 83 (who lives in Clemmons) and Frankie, 98 (who lives in Wilmington and calls her every afternoon at exactly 4:45). On New Philadelphia Moravian Church: “I became a member in 1930, and Pastor Howard Foltz baptized me.” “Walter and I always enjoyed going to church, and were members of the Faithful Workers Class. As we all got older, our class got smaller and smaller, until it was just Walter and me. Ray Troutman would come in and teach just the two of us. Then we felt bad about taking up Ray’s time for only two people, and we joined the Sanctuary Class.” When Walter became seriously ill, Ethel was his caregiver and unable to attend church regularly. At about the same time, her hearing began to diminish significantly. Today, she “has church” through various Christian television programming from the comfort of an easy chair in her den. On the key to a long life: “Hard work, eating healthy food, and getting proper rest.” Ethel’s high energy level is surprising, but her explanation is simple: “If I was to stop, I’d be stopped.” On the future: “Well, I hope to keep living here in my house by myself, and I’ll keep building up my relationship with the Father and my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I’m trying to live for the Lord, because I’m expecting heaven to be my home.”

To increase awareness and understanding of Stephen Ministry, and to prepare the congregation for its relaunch, we continue our series of newsletter articles. A Ministry of Listening Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that we care about the other person. In Stephen Ministry, a great deal of time is spent in teaching and practicing listening skills because of its importance as a caregiving tool. You, too, can become a more caring listener by understanding and applying these six listening concepts from Stephen Ministry training: 1. Listening is active. It takes energy and commitment to listen really well and focus your attention on what the other person has to say instead of thinking of what you’ll say next. 2. Listening takes patience. Often you need to build trust before someone will open up to you. 3. Listening involves more than just words. Pay attention no only to what is said, but to what is not said! 4. Good listeners aren’t completely silent.

They restate key thoughts or ideas to be sure they understand correctly. 5. Listening happens over time. One conversation might build upon an earlier one. 6. Listening is confidential! Jesus was the model of a good listener. Much of his ministry was listening to people. By listening to what people had to say he demonstrated how much he really cared about them. Remember the stories of the woman at the well, Nicodemus, or the disciples on the road to Emmaus. All were times when Jesus showed his care and concern by first listening to people and then giving them what they needed. We all want New Philadelphia to be a caring place where members and guests truly feel cared for. Just as Stephen Minsters use good listening skills to communicate how much they care, so can you. Listening is a great gift we can give to one another, and one we can all use to make New Philadelphia a more caring place.

Open Door Lunch Come and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers from the grill for June’s Open Door Lunch on June 5. The doors open at 11:30AM. In addition to special music from Brad Bennett, we’ll also be treated to tunes from Frank Nifong and Steve Gray. Laurel Ridge is the organization benefitting from the June Open Door Lunch and several staff members and volunteers will be joining us. Bring a friend to support Laurel Ridge and enjoy a great meal and fellowship!

Your donations at the May Open Door Lunch totaled $730 for Samaritan Ministries. Through your gifts, men in Project Cornerstone and other programs have an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Thank you!

Hello Everyone,

The New Philadelphia Sr. High Youth are excited to announce that we will be traveling to Staten Island, New York for our mission trip this summer. While in New York we will be assisting with the continued Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Our team of 12 students and 5 adults from New Philadelphia will be partnering with 8 members of the Konnoak Moravian congregation for this trip. We will be leaving on July 6 and returning on July 14. We ask each of you to include us and our mission trip in your prayers in the coming months. Everyone is so excited for this trip. It will be a great way to help others, get to know each other better and create long lasting memories. In preparation for our trip each of us has participated extensively in fundraising, service, and fellowship events. We are excited to announce that we have nearly met our fundraising goals. Please consider helping us with a donation to “Youth Missions” sometime this month. Your help would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of all the Sr. High Youth going on this trip we thank you, Brianna Burris and Emily Llewellyn

Missions and Social Concerns Do you know who Michael Tesh is? He and wife Ceci and daughter Blessing are at Ray of Hope, south of Mombasa, Kenya. The orphanage was founded to reach, disciple and serve needy children and orphans on the Kenya coast. Our committee has supported them with your help for many years. They raise goats to help with milk and to support the orphanage. Ceci is a teacher there for the children and the orphanage is growing each year. Michael is a native of Winston-Salem who felt called to work in the mission field, loved children and after discipleship training school, went to Nairobi, Kenya for further training and has been with “Youth with a Mission” team since 2003. We support Michael and Ceci with $3500 this year . Please pray for this young family that God will continue their ministry there and bless them for their dedication to these children’s education, development and growth in the Christian faith.
