New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk

We are pleased to announce a new Director of Christian Education, the Rev. Mrs. Christy Clore. Christy is married to Br. David Lewis Clore, who, to use a good Southern phrase, “was raised among us.” Christy and David have one son, Miles Lewis, who is three years old. Christy grew up at Mayodan Moravian Church. Her mother interned as a Christian Educator here at New Philadelphia in 1966, taught in the public schools for more than thirty years, then became a Christian Educator in our province. Christy attended Oberlin College, graduating with a B.A. degree and a double major in biology and religion. She then attended the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where she graduated in 2005 with a Master of Divinity Degree. Christy was ordained a deacon in the Moravian Church in July of the same year. As a friend of David’s family, it was my pleasure to attend his wedding to Christy, which was held on her grandparent’s farm in Stoneville, just outside of Mayodan. Following their union, Christy and David attended New Philadelphia while she served Salem Academy and College, remaining here until she accepted the call to serve the Home Moravian Church. Though an ordained Moravian minister, Christy does not come to us under call. She sought out and applied for our DCE position, which is not a call position, citing a desire to work with the spiritual formation of children and adults. Nevertheless, Christy is eager to serve our children and their families in a pastoral capacity, will assist in serving the Holy Communion, and when the occasion warrants it, she is an able preacher. Our younger children are encouraged to call Christy, “Pastor Christy,” in the same way that they call John “Pastor John,” or me, “Pastor Worth.” Adults (and older children who have the permission of all concerned) are free to call any of us by our first names. We believe that God’s work is visible in this call. We received more than 15 applications for the position, and interviewed almost two-thirds of that number, several of them, including Christy, multiple times. Though Christy has been a strong candidate for our DCE position from the very first, we have the additional confirmation of a long, dutiful and fruitful process by which we sharpened our own understanding of the DCE role at New

Philadelphia, and prepared ourselves to welcome our new DCE to the task. She will begin work on Monday, May 13, 2013. Please join us in praying God’s every blessing upon Christy, David, and Miles as they undergo a significant change in the life of their family. Pray for Christy as she undertakes what we believe will be a perfectly timed and tremendously effective period of service as our Director of Christian Education. Blessings, Pastor Green

Pastor John Writes:

Many thanks for everyone’s help with Youth Sunday on April 28! The worship service was meaningful for our congregation, and we’re thankful for the efforts of those who planned the service, along with those who sang, prayed, read scripture, played music, served as ushers, and helped in countless other ways. Other April activities included hiking at Stone Mountain and attending the Moravian Youth Rally at Friedland Moravian Church. During May, there are several important events on the calendar. We will honor our graduates during worship on Graduation Sunday, May 19. This will also be Pentecost Sunday, and we will confirm the members of our Confirmation Class. This summer, we’re returning to Laurel Ridge for Eco Mission Camp during the week of July 28-August 2. This week is open to any Middle High or Senior High youth, and it will be our eleventh year as a part of Mission Camp. As always, we’ll be serving our neighbors in the Alleghany and Ashe County areas, but this session is the first Eco Mission Camp for Laurel Ridge, and our projects will focus on helping the environment. Our Senior High youth will be serving on Staten Island, New York, from July 6-13, in an effort to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy several months ago. Please keep both of these trips in your thoughts and prayers. Best wishes to you in May! In Christ, The Rev. John G. Rights

Spotlight on.......Robert & Janice Lawton Janice and Robert Lawton are “together because of prayer.” That’s the way Janice describes their relationship which blended two families, her five young children and his daughter. But none of them were ever considered stepchildren: “The word ‘step’ wasn’t even in our vocabulary,” says Bob. “We all just belonged together.” While Bob’s background was in the United Methodist Church, Janice has a long history with New Philadelphia; in fact, it goes back to the beginning. “My great-great-great-grandfather was Johann Greider, Jr. who anglicized the last name to ‘Crater.’ It was in his living room that eight people met to discuss establishing a new church in the Philadelphia community.” That was in the 1830s and from that discussion came the founding of the Philadelphia Church in 1846. Janice explains that there was already a school on Jonestown Road called the Philadelphia School where preaching services had been taking place occasionally. The name was appealing, and adopted as the best name for the new church. One of Janice’s most highly prized possessions is a rocking chair from the room where that first, organizational meeting took place. It joins a host of other family memorabilia in a room especially designated for items from the past. Bob’s domain is the basement where his love of hunting and fishing is evident. Janice and Bob live in Bermuda Run and enjoy viewing the lake from the front of their home, and birdwatching from the back. They also look forward to visits from their children, 18 grandchildren, and 4 greatgrandchildren. In spite of not physically being able to attend worship service regularly, their deep love for New Philadelphia continues. “We miss being there, but we have church here, every day.”

Missions and Social Concerns

Hayley Geis was guest speaker at our April meeting talking about her trip to Nicaragua. She will be going with Young Life and serving on the work staff for a week in June. We are supporting her with $300.00 short term funds. She will also be selling coffee to help with funding of the trip. Other monies disbursed were $2000 to Star Mountain; Kevin and Charity Manous $667 Bulletin Board: Our committee has a new location for information. Please check the bulletin board in the commons area for upcoming mission news and events. We hope to keep you better informed on provincial activities and events at our church regarding missions. If anyone has pertinent information throughout the Province please feel free to put it on the board. Thank you again for your continued support and prayers. We will meet on Sunday, May 12. We are an open committee and ALL are welcome. Sew A Dress: All women of NPMC are invited to get together to “sew a dress” again. Our project last year was a great succees and with the help of many at NPMC we made 195 dresses. They were shipped to Haiti and Kenya. Our first session will be Saturday, June 1 at 9AM in the library. Sewing machines, ironing boards, irons will be provided. Please come---bring pillow cases, scissors and ribbon. We will go over instructions and pattern again and provide on site training!! We can use ladies to pin fabric, people to iron and ladies to just enjoy the fellowship. Again, dresses may be made at home at your own leisure. If you know of ladies outside our church that just want to help, please invite them to do so. We do not have a deadline for completion, but it probably will be October. Anyone wishing to donate pillow cases or ribbon please contact Cathy Ebert or Jane Wynne. PLEASE JOIN US AGAIN WITH THIS FUN PROJECT!

Christian Symbol + Butterfly The butterfly symbolizes resurrection, Easter and the new life we have in Christ Jesus. As a caterpillar disappears into a chrysalis, so Jesus' dead body was hidden in a tomb. The emergence of the butterfly, rising into the sky in its beautiful new body, reminds us of Christ's resurrection — and ours.

To increase awareness and understanding of Stephen Ministry, and to prepare the congregation for its relaunch, a series of articles about the program will appear in the next four newsletters.

The Story of Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry began in 1974 when Kenneth C. Haugk, a pastor and clinical psychologist, was pastor of St. Stephen’s Lutheran church in St. Louis, Missouri. Fresh out of seminary, his strengths and heart were in caregiving ministry, and he was looking forward to making a positive impact on his congregation and community by providing pastoral care to all those experiencing divorce, grief, hospitalization, discouragement, and other life difficulties. Very quickly, though, he found that the needs for care by far exceeded that which he alone could provide. He faced one of a pastor’s greatest frustrations: seeing people slipping through the cracks because their urgent needs were going unmet. In November of 1974, he discussed the situation with two seminary friends. Their conversation turned to Ephesians 4 and “equipping the saints for the work of ministry.” Haugk realized that God didn’t intend for pastors to monopolize ministry. Rather, God gave all of his people gifts for ministry and one of his roles as pastor was to equip others to use their gifts in ministry. Haugk returned to St. Stephen’s with a plan. In the coming months he recruited nine lay people who had the gifts and heart to do caring ministry. Using his combined backgrounds in theology and psychology, he developed a training program in Christian caregiving. By March 1975, the nine were commissioned as “Stephen Ministers.” The impact was immediate. Not only did people begin receiving the focused Christian care they needed, but the Stephen Ministers were surprised by the spiritual growth they encountered as they saw God working through them to bring love and healing to others. Later that year, two of those Stephen Ministers approached Haugk and suggested that the program was too good to limit to their congregation only: It had to be offered to other churches as well. In November 1975, Haugk and his wife, Joan, founded the not-for-profit Stephen Ministries organization and began bringing Stephen Ministry to other congregations. It spread like wildfire. Today, New Philadelphia is one of more than 11,000 congregations representing more than 150 Christian denominations that now offer Stephen Ministry.

Annie B Mission Update

God has blessed Annie B Mission and its members a lot in this past year and He seems to have even bigger plans for us in the future. This past year, Steve Green went on a mission trip to help restore homes in Staten Island and he also attended the Presbyterian Pilgrimage. Matt and Elizabeth got married. Diana Green graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and has been accepted to UNC-Charlotte’s Masters of Social Work graduate program. Ashley is wrapping up her second semester at nursing school at UNC-Charlotte. Ghada Naser, Director at Star Mountain, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Siba. In December, Matt ran a marathon in honor of his mother and raised money for Star Mountain with each mile he ran. While it has been a whirlwind of activities and milestones in the team’s personal lives, the same is true for Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center. To date, Annie B Mission has raised 21,000 dollars for Star Mountain. In December 2012, The Red Crescent Society conducted a speech therapy workshop with the staff at Star Mountain. In January and February 2013, two teachers from Star Mountain visited The Red Crescent Society where they received in-field training. They sat in on actual speech therapy sessions, learned about how plans work for individual clients, and they were shown how educational toys were used for speech therapy. These teachers taught what they had learned to the rest of the staff at Star Mountain. The Red Crescent Society continues to supervise the staff ’s progress once a month. Also, Star Mountain hired a part-time speech

She has also been able to assist in training the Star Mountain staff. Annie B Mission is excited to announce that it will be hosting its first ever Music on a Mission fundraiser. Music on a Mission is a benefit concert with all proceeds going to Star Mountain’s speech therapy fund. Music on a Mission will be held on Sunday, June 9 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, starting at 3 p.m. There will be music for all age groups. The all Moravian line up of entertainers features Rev Brad Bennett, Rachel Marie Schachter, and The Moravian Buns. The cost is $5 in advance and $7 at the door. For more information, please visit the Annie B Mission Facebook Page, website (anniebmission.org), or contact Elizabeth Green at elizabeth.alexander.green@gmail.com. We hope to see you all there at Music on a Mission for a rockin’ good time and a great cause! You are Loved, Annie B Mission
