By all accounts, it is not getting any easier in the transport and logistics sectors with many challenges remaining in the year ahead.

Among those challenges is balancing the books in the face of continued high fuel costs. As the Road Haulage Association points out, hauliers have borne the brunt of huge increases for the second year in a row. The cost of fuel, vehicles, and labour have skyrocketed well above inflation, in part due to the impact of the war in Ukraine. The RHA’s annual Haulage Cost Movement report shows that the cost of operating a 44 tonne lorry has increased by 19%.

Another challenge is the rising incidents of crime targeting drivers and their cargos. A report from the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service says gangs of organised crime groups are robbing trucks and costing the UK economy hundreds of millions of pounds. Much of this crime happens at independent road parking, typically on the side of a lay-by or industrial estate. However such crimes also take place within recognised lorry parking facilities where operators are charged for the use of the facilities.

Efforts to tackle those gangs are being stepped up.

All of that said there is much progress being made in many areas and there are opportunities to be explored in an industry that is both adaptable and resilient. That resilience has been well illustrated by many manufacturers including DAF Trucks who set new records in the past year, with a market share of 17.3% in the European heavy truck market and a total production of 68,000 units –one of the many positive stories you will read in this issue of the magazine.

On another note, we congratulate founder and former Managing Director of Oliver Transport Services Willie Oliver on his being awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to education, business and charities in County Londonderry.

Business as Usual After McBurney Transport Acquired by DFDS in Multi Million Pound Deal

It is business as usual at McBurney Transport after leading European transport and logistics provider DFDS agreed to acquire the family-owned group in a deal worth over £140m; it also includes McBurney Refrigeration Ireland Ltd, and Bondelivery NI Ltd.

The news comes after Norman McBurney, who founded the company along with his wife Lynn in Ballymena in 1965, announced his retirement.

His daughter Carolyn Carmichael, who had been the group’s operations director, has taken over Norman’s role as Managing Director and says there will be no re-branding of any of the current fleet, with the company trading as a separate entity apart from DFDS, while the remaining family and senior management team will continue to run the business. Norman will be kept on to help the new owners in an unofficial capacity.

One of Northern Ireland’s biggest success stories, McBurney Transport, with depots located across the UK and Ireland, employs over 800 people, and as a group operates a fleet of around 400 trucks and almost 1400 trailers. In announcing the news to employees, Norman McBurney wrote: “Due to my retirement, I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to sell the entire share capital of our companies to DFDS A/S. I am delighted that the businesses

will continue as they currently are, within the DFDS Group.

“The family and senior management team will continue to run the businesses with my daughter Carolyn Carmichael appointed as my replacement as Managing Director. We wish to assure you that it will be very much business as usual going forward and we have no doubt that the business will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“We would like to thank each and every one of you for your loyal service and commitment.

We are exceptionally proud of how you have represented our family business throughout the years and what we have

collectively achieved.”

Strategic Focus

The acquisition of McBurney Transport Group is aligned with DFDS’ strategic focus on cold chain logistics; it overlaps with existing activities in the region, and offers opportunities to connect with other parts of DFDS’ panEuropean transport network.

“The acquisition of McBurney Transport Group greatly enhances the scope of our customer offerings on the island of Ireland and in the UK, particularly towards the resilient food sector. It also brings considerable scale to our existing operations in the region”, says Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS.

“By becoming part of DFDS we gain access to new development opportunities. I am certain the wider market coverage, including access to DFDS’ extensive transport network, will benefit our many longstanding customers. I am confident that our many loyal and dedicated employees will be comfortable and happy after this transaction”, adds Norman McBurney.

The core activity of McBurney is the transport of full and part-load trailers between island of Ireland and the UK by road and ferry. Most of the trailers are temperaturecontrolled units. McBurney annually transports more than 100,000 trailers across the Irish Sea and operates from eight different locations: three in Northern Ireland, one in Ireland, three in England and one in Scotland, while in Liverpool, McBurney operates a 25,000-pallet cold store, which facilitates the transport of cold chain goods throughout the UK. Closing of the deal with DFDS, which has facilities in Belfast, Dublin, Cork and Rosslare, is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the next couple of months.

New Chairman Elected at IRTE Ireland North Centre

Jeff previously held the role of vice chairman. That position is now filled by Michael Hutchinson, a motor vehicle lecturer who also delivers training at the South Eastern Regional College (SERC) in Lisburn. HGV market posts another year of growth as supply chain issues ease

UK new heavy goods vehicle registrations rose by 9.6% to 40,716 units in 2022, according to new figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The first full year of open trading since the pandemic saw robust demand from the haulage, construction and distribution sectors, with deliveries helped by easing supply chain and logistics disruptions. While the market remains -16.1% below 2019, a strong Q3 performance, followed by 14.4% year-on-

year growth in Q4, resulted in a better second half to the year than pre-pandemic.

Growth in 2022 was driven by articulated truck deliveries, up 21.9% to 19,414 units, while rigid truck registrations increased by 0.3% to 21,302 units. Tractors remained by far the most popular segment, rising by 21.7% to 19,076 units, followed by box vans, which grew 0.2% to 4,062 units. Demand for curtain-sided lorries was also up, by 5.9%, while there were declines in registrations of tipper (-0.8%), dropside (-3.1%) and refuse vehicles (-14.8%).

HGV registrations rose in all UK nations, with the vast majority recorded in England (87.7%

of the market), followed by Scotland (6.8%), Wales (3.1%) and Northern Ireland (2.4%). Regionally, South East England recorded the most HGV registrations (22.6%), ahead of the West Midlands (12.9%) and North West (11.9%).

Demand for the latest lower and zero emission trucks is growing as the entire sector prepares to make the transition. Truck manufacturers are already investing heavily to bring a range of electric, hydrogen and other new technology models to market. Operators, however, need long-term certainty to make the necessary purchase investments and, given that there is currently no single net zero

Founder and former Managing Director of Oliver Transport Services Willie Oliver has received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to education, business and charities in County Londonderry.

A former national chairman of the Road Haulage Association, he established Oliver Transport Services over four decades ago; it was acquired by WS Transportation last year.

A Deputy Lieutenant for County Londonderry, Willie’s work for the RHA included regional chairman for Scotland and Northern Ireland. He joined the RHA National Board in 2000

MCBURNEY TRANSPORT INVEST IN 30 NEW TRAILERS FROM SDC

Ballymena based logistics company McBurney Transport has taken delivery of 30 new Aluminium Boxvan trailers from manufacturer SDC Trailers in Toomebridge.

The substantial investment signals a dedication by the company to strengthen its efficiency and operations for customers across the UK, Ireland, and Europe. Built to withstand the rigours of the road, McBurney’s new Boxvan’s feature three BPW Eco Air axles with low maintenance drum brakes and a roll stability braking system, along with internal load restraint rails, steel reinforced flooring, LED and ISO regulation lighting. The trailers are manufactured to SDC’s lightweight and durable design with a double-skin allow plank body and double-insulated roof, providing additional security and insulation of goods during transport.

FORS asserts position as industry’s ‘first choice’ accreditation scheme

FORS, the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme, has responded to the emergence of alternative accreditation schemes. The reaction from FORS follows Transport for London’s (TfL) disclosure that it will recognise alternative schemes as ‘equivalent’ to FORS for transport operators pursuing compliance with TfL’s Work Related Road Risk initiative.

The announcement by TfL, in fact, shines a light on FORS as the transport industry’s first choice accreditation scheme that offers a unique proposition for transport operators.

“Any move to raise safety, efficiency and environmental standards on our roads is a very good thing,” said FORS Concession Director, Ian Henderson, “The more that commercial vehicle operators seek to self-improve, the better, and TfL’s commitment in this regard is to be supported.

“However, even just a cursory glance at the relative size, scope and service offering currently available to operators will reveal that FORS is the industry’s principal accreditation scheme; the first choice for operators looking to boost efficiency, and, crucially, to nurture a safety mindset that can definitely bring tangible benefits. Alternative schemes aren’t comparable in this respect.”

With over 15 years’ experience as the UK’s established, recognised accreditation scheme, FORS today serves over 4,700 accredited operators (representing 94,000

vehicles) each benefiting from the FORS best practice mandate to improve safety, increase efficiency and foster an environmentally conscious mindset. Central to this mandate is the FORS Professional training portfolio, arguably the industry’s most comprehensive training resource for drivers and fleet managers. With over 30 distinct training courses on offer, FORS has delivered an impressive 130,000 eLearning modules in 2022 alone.

For fleet managers, The FORS Practitioner training programme has been devised to improve knowledge, skills and confidence. Logistics UK Responds to Fine Increases for Hauliers

New fines to be applied to UK hauliers found to be carrying clandestine migrants or crossing the border with an unsecured vehicle have drawn a quick response from Logistics UK.

Chris Yarsley, Senior Policy Manager at Logistics UK commented: “Vehicles crossing the UK’s borders have long been a target for asylum seekers and people smugglers. Logistics UK objected to the new penalty of up to £6,000 for crossing the border with an unsecured vehicle during the passage of the Bill through Parliament, as our members felt it could be seen to be deterring EU businesses from risking a journey to the UK.

“We hope that government will work with the sector to help compliant operators demonstrate they are making every effort to comply with the new rules. Our nation’s highly-interconnected supply chain relies

on the smooth movement of goods from across the EU, particularly at this time of year, and any delay to goods would be detrimental to trade and could deter future movements of goods to the UK.

“At the same time, the government’s plans to increase fines for those found to be carrying victims of people-smuggling gangs, from £2,000 per person to £10,000 per person, will not tackle the root-cause of the problem.

“Professional operators remain vigilant at all times when moving goods across the UK’s borders, but government must acknowledge that the responsible drivers and hauliers are, themselves, the victims of the criminal people-

specifiers who demand excellence in transport as a prerequisite. Henderson went on, “I would ask operators to look at the benefits of each scheme before signing up and they will very quickly see that there exists a substantially greater benefits package with FORS, to the extent that is a unique proposition for operators. Having 15 years of growth behind us, FORS has established rock-solid foundations. In 2023, accredited operators will see processes being simplified, with real improvements implemented elsewhere.

“At the heart of our quest to deliver best practice,” he said,” our comprehensive FORS Professional training portfolio is arguably the most complete training resource currently available for drivers and fleet managers. Training content is being revised and updated, while our FORS Practitioner programme is receiving a complete upgrade. There’s much to look forward to in 2023.”

“When individuals and businesses take every reasonable measure to mitigate the risk of carrying an illegal entrant, including participation in industry standards such as AEOS and Customs Seals (which demonstrate they have implemented the highest possible security measures), it is unreasonable to impose such punitive penalties.

“Urgent improvements are needed to ensure detection systems used in ports are fully effective in locating hidden individuals on vehicles and more should be done to provide safe and secure passage for vehicles to them ports themselves, with more secure overnight parking and increased policing on the routes to Channel ports.

“Governments on both sides of the Channel should remain vigilant to ensure that hardworking hauliers can continue to protect the integrity of the UK’s supply chain – hauliers and drivers are not professionally trained immigration officers or trained security staff and should not be expected to take the fall for the failings of border operations.”

Cargo Crime on the increase

As cargo crime rates rise, the Road Haulage Association is encouraging drivers and operators to report any suspicious behaviour. Hauliers forced to park outside of truck stops are frequently the target of criminals who attack drivers, damage vehicles and steal fuel or cargo. Commercial vehicle drivers are being urged to report anything suspicious when parked up to the police and the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service.

The National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) is a national police unit hosted by Hampshire Constabulary. NaVCIS operates independently, under the direction of the National Police Chief Councils’ vehicle crime section. They are 100% funded by industry under the provisions of the Police Act 1996. Supporting law enforcement partners by investigating reports of vehicle crime and providing specialist operational analysis, advice and support to UK police forces. NaVCIS have reported that thousands of pounds of goods and fuel have been stolen with their latest update showed that, in 2021, there have been 738 HGV and cargo crime notifications. These have added up to a cost price loss of £13.9m, with the average cost price loss value per incident being to £17,752. Road freight theft is not a new phenomenon. The RHA has long advocated for more safe

and secure truck parking. It is wrong for drivers to be forced to park in ill-lit locations with no fence, no security lights, and, most importantly, no CCTV cameras to discourage thieves. Remember, these aren’t just random or opportunist thieves as many of them work in organised crime gangs, which are often linked to broader networks, with a focus on the valuable and resaleable contents of an HGV.

Secure Parking

So, aside from drivers and others having a rigorous duty of care to make their loads as secure as possible in every way what else can be done? Obviously, safe and secure parking would be beneficial, particularly overnight for drivers on mandated breaks and rest periods. The RHA believe that reclassifying certain offences would be beneficial as well. Offences involving violence are classed as “robbery,” and the police take them far more seriously.

When no violence is involved, they are labelled as “theft from motor vehicle”. That implies fewer police investigations and less severe penalties for robbery criminals. This, says RHA, is unacceptable, as lorry load theft deserves its own category. Without this, organised criminal groups will continue to see lorry load theft as an easy target, being low-risk and high reward with little possibility of detection. The true extent and impact of cargo crime is distorted by a lack of reliable and consistent data, in part due to the low priority afforded to it in comparison to more high profile offences.

Logistics UK recently held its Freight Council in Belfast where members had the opportunity to meet with Minister of State for Northern Ireland, Steve Baker, to discuss key issues facing the logistics sector in Northern Ireland.

The logistics industry is key to maximising opportunities and growth for the NI economy, and Logistics UK has consistently highlighted the importance of communication between industry and government as a key factor in delivering and driving success.

“Some of the key issues raised by members at the meeting included the NI Protocol, and the need for a negotiated outcome between the UK and the EU that works for logistics businesses. Members also

raised concerns about the potential impact of the Retained EU Law Bill on NI businesses, and Logistics UK was encouraged by the Minister’s acknowledgement and awareness

of the impact of these issues and welcomes his agreement to ongoing dialogue moving forward.”

The discussion also focused on the support needed for

the transition to net zero, in particular investment in charging infrastructure, power supplies and the need for government incentives, including through taxation to assist businesses. Also mentioned was the need for delivery of long delayed, key infrastructure projects such as the A5 and York Street Interchange, and upgrade of the A1. Members also raised the need for improvements to the A75 in Scotland. Logistics UK is encouraged by the Minister’s engagement with members on these issues, and his active willingness to work with the sector to seek solutions.

NOLAN TRANSPORT OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW €12 MILLION GLOBAL LOGISTICS PARK IN WEXFORD

Nolan Transport has made a substantial investment in the future of today’s supply chain requirements, with the opening of a new €12 million facility after unprecedented demand for warehousing caused by changes in customer needs and disruption in the supply chain stemming from Brexit and Covid.

The new €12 million 150,000 cubic metres high bay warehouse facility has been specifically designed to facilitate its customer’s needs and is already in high demand with its global customers seeking out highend warehousing requirements. The warehouse facility has been

constructed to meet international standards and offers a specialist wing for bioscience, clean room facilities and a containment wing. Additionally incorporating a sustainability plan, the building will be powered via solar roof panels coupled with in-built smart controls for energy. The company is also seeking options to add on railway connections and on-site wind turbines in the coming years.

MODERN TYRES CUT THE RIBBON ON NEW £5.5 MILLION MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN NEWRY

Modern Tyres recent annual conference at Killeavy Castle just outside Newry was the first time in two years that the company has been able to bring its staff together, but it was also an opportunity to hold the official opening of their new manufacturing facility at Carnbane in Newry.

While undoubtedly it was a cause for celebration as the members of the Byrne family gathered to cut the ribbon on the company’s new £5.5 million, 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility, it was also a time for reflection for them.

Just over six months ago their father and company founder Jimmy Byrne sadly passed away. While a source of sadness that he wasn’t present to witness the company’s latest massive step, his input into the planning of the project is clear to see.

Jimmy founded Modern Tyres in 1965, starting with a single tyre depot; today the company has grown to 48 branches and in turn Ireland’s largest independent tyre retailers employing over 200 people.

The latest steps being taken by the business are significant ones.

The new 100,000 square foot facility in Newry has created a new division for the business specialising in tyre and rim assembly bringing an additional

25 new jobs to the workforce.

Speaking at the official opening Director Rory Byrne said: “The new facility will improve efficiencies within the family run company, allowing Modern Tyres to provide a complete end-to end service. Our

new purpose – built manufacturing facility will allow our business to grow capitalising on new opportunities in export markets.”

Michael Savage Chairman of Newry and Mourne District Council added: “As Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council I was delighted to attend the official opening of Modern Tyres, new division, Modern Wheel Solutions. This 100,000 square foot purpose built facility in Carnbane Business Park is testimony to the Byrne’s family long standing investment in Newry and District.

Plans announced for state-of-the-art green hydrogen project at Wrightbus Ballymena

Plans have been unveiled for an innovative multi-million pound green hydrogen production facility at the Ballymena headquarters of globally renowned sustainable bus manufacturer Wrightbus.

Subject to planning approval, the new facility, which is being delivered by Wrightbus in partnership with Hygen Energy, will initially produce enough clean energy to power 300 hydrogen powered buses a day in Northern Ireland.

Green hydrogen is a completely renewable fuel, meaning it does not create any carbon emissions. It is made by using renewable electricity to separate water into oxygen and hydrogen – a process called electrolysis. The hydrogen is then used onsite or transported to where it is needed.

Since being acquired by Jo Bamford in 2019, Wrightbus has been one of the most successful proponents of the clean hydrogen revolution. This has included the company introducing the world’s first hydrogen powered fleet of doubledecker buses in 2020, which by November 2022 achieved the incredible milestone of travelling 1.75 million miles since first entering service. With huge emphasis being placed by the UK government, and governments across the world, on the role of green hydrogen in the drive for net zero, a central focus for

industry is ensuring there is enough hydrogen being produced to fulfil those ambitions.

Jo Bamford, Chairman of Wrightbus, says: ‘Wrightbus is delighted to be working with Hygen on this hydrogen production project at our factory in Ballymena. One of our key objectives when we purchased Wrightbus in 2019 was to bring the first UK manufactured hydrogen double decker bus to market. We have done this, with our Hydroliner buses now moving passengers every day in a number of cities across the UK, including here in Belfast.

“Hydrogen is the best means of decarbonising many bus routes, but for this to happen bus operators need a reliable and voluminous supply of low cost low carbon hydrogen. It is great to see a project that is being sized to enable future demand for hydrogen here in Northern Ireland to be met.

“This project will initially be able to produce enough hydrogen to run up to 300 buses, and has the potential to triple in scale as demand for hydrogen increases. We hope it will set an example for how these

projects will be designed and built.”

A community consultation process for the project is now underway, led by Renewable Connections, development partner of Hygen. This is aimed at encouraging people in the vicinity of the site to provide their feedback on the proposed project before any planning application is submitted. It is intended that a planning application will be submitted to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in April 2023. It is hoped a planning decision will be issued in winter 2023, meaning the facility will become operational in summer 2024. The community consultation process for the Ballymena green hydrogen facility will include two ‘drop-in’ public exhibitions at the Wrightbus site at 201 Galgorm Road on Friday 3rd March 2023 (3pm – 7pm) and Saturday 4th March 2023 (10am – 2pm). Members of the public are encouraged to stop by, view the plans, speak with a member of the project team and provide their feedback.

Electronic Brake Performance MonitoringWhat it does and how it works

The cutting-edge telematics system from BPW-idem typically incorporates electronic brake performance monitoring (EBPM) as standard. It has been designed by BPW engineers in the UK, in collaboration with the BPW Mechatronics Department in Germany and the multiple award-winning telematics company, idem.

This innovative function audits the brake performance of a trailer and reports it to the operator via the idem telematics system. All braking events are monitored. However, only those that fit certain criteria, making them suitable for reliable analysis, are used to report on braking performance.

EBPM makes use of data taken from the trailer’s electronic braking system (EBS) during a braking manoeuvre. It combines this with data from the telematics system in order to calculate the change in speed over distance and time and determine a deceleration rate for that manoeuvre. The data is then transmitted to the idem servers via General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Once processed, it becomes available to the report writing system.

Traditionally, trailer brakes are tested annually at the MOT on a roller brake tester. This provides a performance figure for the trailer in a static condition; i.e., the vehicle combination is not moving, so the brakes are operating without modulation from the tractor unit and at a slow speed only simulated by the brake rollers. For a tri-axle semi-trailer, there is a testing condition which allows the trailer to be presented for the test in the unladen condition and where wheel locks are relied upon in order to pass the test. In recent times, there has been a move towards testing trailer brakes four times a year, one of which must be carried out at MOT time.

Continuous monitoring of trailer brakes is an alternative. This is a very cost-effective and accurate method for monitoring braking performance. EBPM provides for this, and the vehicle will only require a roller brake test annually at MOT time.

Because EBPM continually monitors the trailer brakes, there are other advantages. The brake efficiency is calculated each time the brakes are applied, and therefore, the trailer is tested with varying load conditions. The trailer brake performance is given at normal highway speeds and not just at slow speeds

on the brake roller tester. The foundation braking system is being tested whilst running at its correct working temperature. Any faults that affect the performance of the brakes will become evident before the next scheduled brake roller test. Reports can be generated for the user at various intervals to satisfy either the statutory requirements or those demanded by the business for planning service intervals or service operations.

Entire Combination

When EBPM gathers the brake efficiency data, it does so for the entire combination, i.e., the tractor and the trailer together as a single unit. This means that the figures are not directly compatible with those from a brake roller tester. The system’s software allows for this, as well as the impacts of external variables, in order to create data for the customer that is comparable to data from the brake roller tester. In order for this system to work correctly,

it is essential that the trailer brake calculations are accurate. An important part of the installation of EBPM is to ensure that the brake calculations are checked and that changes are made where necessary. It is also important that the braking compatibility between the tractor and the trailer is accurately set; otherwise, the quoted braking efficiency may not be correctly stated for the trailer when compared to the figures gained from a roller brake test. It is crucial to understand that the results of an unladen brake roller test for a trailer cannot be compared to the results for braking efficiency given by EBPM. This is because the figures from an unladen test will only record the retardation indicated at the point of wheel locking, whereas under normal loading conditions at highway speeds the performance may be higher. Trailers loaded to at least 60% of the maximum bogie load will yield more accurate results. However, allowances will need to be made for testing with cold brakes at low roller speeds. It is natural to assume that in cases of reported poor brake performance, the trailer is in need of attention, but the problem could equally be an issue with the tractor braking system. It must be remembered that the figures sensed by EBPM are for the combination. The first step when investigating poor (or excessive) braking performance is to carry out a laden graduated brake roller test. The reports that are generated by the system can be for various periods. However, 90 days will give a very good overall picture of how the brakes are performing, and a weekly view will give an early warning of any problems. Alongside the electronic brake performance monitoring function offered by idem, there is also the option to add tyre pressure monitoring (TPM), temperature control monitoring (TCM), and door sensing.

The system also increases safety, because it automatically sends the company alarm messages via SMS or e-mail if a trailer has been tampered with.

DAF Trucks Deliver Record Performance in a Challenging Year

With a market share of 17.3% in the European heavy truck market and a total production of 68,000 units, DAF Trucks has set new records in 2022. These excellent achievements reflect the high demand for transport thanks to a strong economy as well as the impressive success of the New Generation DAF XD, XF, XG and XG+ series.

In 2022, DAF introduced its New Generation DAF XD series, representing a new generation of distribution and vocational vehicles. The versatile DAF XD sets new standards in safety, efficiency and driver comfort. As a result, the XD truck was awarded ‘International Truck of the Year 2023’ by an independent jury of leading European transportation journalists, succeeding the ‘International Truck of the Year 2022’ which was awarded to the long-haul DAF XF, XG and XG+ one year earlier. At the IAA truck show, DAF unveiled a full new generation of battery-electric XD and XF trucks with ‘zero emission’ driving ranges of 500 kilometres and which will enter production in April 2023. A brand new Electric Truck Assembly plant has been completed in Eindhoven. Despite material shortages which impacted the entire automotive industry last year, DAF continued production and even increased build rates, which resulted in record production volumes last year. In 2022, some56,000 medium and heavy-duty CF, XF, XG and XG+ trucks came off the production line (49,000 in 2021) as well as some12,000 LF distribution

trucks (11,000 in 2021), setting a new production record.

DAF increased its European market share in the 16+ tonne segment to a record 17.3% (2021: 15.9%) and achieved market leadership in the United Kingdom (31.1%), the Netherlands (32.5%), Belgium (23.6%),Poland (22.4%), Hungary (24.4%) and Bulgaria (26.4%).

DAF continued market leadership in the European heavy-duty tractor segment and is the leading import brand in Germany. In the light segment, DAF realised a market

share of 9.7% (2021:10.1%) and continued its market leadership in the UK (37.5%). Sales outside Europe

DAF sold over 7,500 trucks outside the European Union in 2022. In Taiwan, DAF remained the heavy-duty market leader among European manufacturers. Record truck sales were achieved in Israel, Colombia, Ecuador and Australia.

Logistics UK Urges Government to Maintain Fuel Duty Cut

Logistics UK has submitted its concerns and industry recommendations to the UK government ahead of the 2023 Spring Budget.

The business group has highlighted the dangers of a disproportionate rise in fuel duty to inflation and the UK economy and has called for a dynamic mechanism that retains the 5ppl fuel duty cut introduced in March 2022, while maintaining revenue levels through VAT and other sources. Logistics UK has previously raised concerns regarding a reported potential 23% increase in fuel duty from Spring 2023, following the publication of the Office of Budgetary Responsibility (OBR) Report on Fiscal Responsibility on the day of the Autumn Statement.

Such an increase, according to David Wells,

the business group’s CEO, would equate to an additional £4,850 annual cost to run a 44t truck. 99% of logistics businesses are SMEs and even a small haulage firm with seven HGVs could be facing an additional £34,000 to annual operating costs if the duty rise were to be introduced after March 2023.

“Logistics businesses have seen total vehicle operating costs rise 12.6% (for the 12 months to 1 October 2022), with Logistics UK members also reporting rising costs of charging electric vehicles and using greener fuels, as well as costs of over £1 million to upgrade depot power supplies to enable electric vehicle charging. And as recently as January, government announced an 85% reduction in energy support for business,

and special vehicles world-wide. This represents an increase of more than 20% compared with 2021 (2,250 engines). DAF started delivery of the first CF Military vehicles to the Belgian Armed Forces out of a total order of 879 all-wheel drive vehicles – equipped with or without ballistic cab – which will be delivered up to 2025.

“A record number of new trucks were delivered with a DAF MultiSupport repair and maintenance contract”, said Richard Zink, member of the DAF Board of Management with responsibility for Marketing and Sales. “This means that more customers are opting for maximum uptime support, both in terms of costs and vehicle availability.” For the same reason, a record number of 1,100 transport operators are relying on the excellent services of PACCAR Parts Fleet Services. In addition, PACCAR Financial reached a record portfolio size and sold record number of used vehicles.

while average gas and electricity market prices were only 35% lower compared with when the energy support scheme was originally announced – driving up costs to our sector at a time of high inflation, and when our members should be focusing on the transition to net zero.

“The logistics industry is the backbone of the UK economy and is at the heart of every sector, delivering the goods needed by the nation. However, it operates on extremely narrow profit margins, in some cases of less than one per cent, and cannot continue to absorb these increased costs. Any measures that increase fuel duty will have a significant impact on consumer prices, which have increased 10.5% in the twelve months to December 2022.

“Not only would further inflation spikes be detrimental to the nation’s economy and potentially result in business closures, but it would also occupy funds that could have otherwise been directed at greener technology investments and therefore could result in failure to meet decarbonisation targets. Logistics UK is now urging government to use the upcoming Budget to ensure supply chains can keep moving.”

Larne Harbour Check leads to £2,500 Fine

A County Armagh operator was convicted at Ballymena District Court and fined a total of £2500 after DVA Enforcement Officers stopped a 3 axle Scania heavy goods vehicle in combination with a 3-axletrailer at Larne Harbour.

The vehicle and tachograph were both inspected. The analysis of the tachograph data indicated that the driver failed to take daily rest of 11 or 9 hours and exceeded daily driving period (9/10 hours driving).

The data downloaded from the vehicle’s tachograph unit showed that on two occasions the vehicle had been driven without a driver’s card inserted in the tachograph unit. Further investigation highlighted that on the day of detection the driver had been driving whilst disqualified. The operator had permitted him to drive the vehicle and any insurance cover on the vehicle would be invalid with a disqualified driver at the wheel.

Overloaded Truck Stopped at Belfast Docks

A Country Tyrone operator has been fined

£2,800 at Belfast Magistrates Court after DVA Enforcement Officers carried out checks on goods vehicles in Belfast Docks.

Two Volvo articulated vehicles were directed for compliance checks at a DVA weighbridge when it was noted that the gross vehicle weight of one vehicle was 44,000kgs, therefore requiring tachograph recording equipment to be installed, calibrated and used.

When observed on the public road both vehicles were being driven with the mid lift axle in the raised position therefore the vehicles axle spread became 2+3 configuration, instead of 3+3 configuration, meaning that the gross weight became 40000kgs and was treated as such during the course of weight determination.

Tachograph data was subsequently obtained from the Operator. A significant number of offences were identified from the analysis. Further analysis of driver’s hours from the vehicle tachograph unit revealed a further 23 occasions where the driver cards had been used fraudulently to hide the actual driving time of the driver.

Logistics UK Welcomes Independent Net Zero Review

Logistics UK has welcomed the publication of the independent Skidmore Net Zero Review report and says it is encouraged to note the report’s recognition of the opportunities and challenges for the logistics sector to decarbonise.

Deputy Director of Policy at Logistics UK, Michelle Gardner, comments: “The logistics industry is keen to play its role in the decarbonisation agenda, however as a highly complex industry, this will not happen overnight.

“Logistics UK is encouraged by the review’s recognition of the opportunities and challenges involved and welcomes a number of recommendations – aimed at supporting industry on this journey – made within the report.

“Logistics, like many other sectors of the UK economy, is facing increasing cost pressures and Logistics UK has longcalled for greater certainty from government to allow businesses to plan and invest in the necessary technologies and infrastructure.

“We are therefore pleased that the review has recommended government provide this longterm certainty to allow businesses confidence in the knowledge that UK policy or funding will not rapidly change without very good reason. We hope this report will help shape future government policy.” Modal-shift has a significant role to play in the decarbonisation of industry and Logistics UK also welcomes the report’s recommendation that government should continue to work with the sector to set out a clear programme by 2024, to accelerate decarbonisation, building on the Future of Freight Plan.

FRAUD ALERT

What is happening? Criminals are moving illicit alcohol from Northern Ireland to mainland UK. Hauliers and logistics providers are being sub-contracted to transport goods on which no UK excise duty or VAT has been paid. The commodities involved are full or part loads of mixed-brand beer or wine. Criminals are taking advantage of excess capacity and reduced rates for transport which may otherwise run empty when outbound to mainland UK. What does this mean for me? By supplying haulage or logistic services you could unwittingly be helping criminals to commit alcohol fraud. You should be aware that:

• Being involved in criminal activity can bring risks to you and your business

• Tax or duty losses may result in financial penalties or criminal prosecution

• Seizure of illicit good and-or vehicles may lead to disruption of scheduled services

Turning a blind eye to any kind of fraud means criminals can operate in plain sight and with little risk to themselves. This is a crime that hurts legitimate businesses and the public, who go on to buy unsafe, unregulated or out of date products.

What do I need to do? You need to take immediate action to address the risks highlighted in this fraud alert. It is in your interests to check carefully who you are dealing with to help avoid being unwittingly involved in supply chains where tax or duty has not been paid. Please share this fraud alert with people in your business who may be approached to supply haulage or logistics services involving alcohol – particularly movements between Northern Ireland and mainland UK. Check and review your company due diligence policy for customers who subcontract movements of alcohol – ask

yourself if your colleagues know the policy and are following it correctly.

If you store or transport alcohol for customers, you should determine the duty status of the goods and ask for evidence to confirm UK duty has been paid.

It is your responsibility to ask: “could this be part of a fraud, or implicate my business in the supply of illicit goods?” If the answer is yes, consider carefully whether you want to be involved at all or if you need to take action to mitigate the risks.

• Understand and objectively assess the risks of fraud within the supply chains in which you operate

• Put in place reasonable and proportionate checks to identify transactions that may lead to fraud

• Have procedures in place to take timely and effective mitigating action where a risk of fraud is identified

• Document the checks you intend to carry out and have appropriate governance in place to ensure this happens

FLEET MAINTENANCE

The Department considers a few maintenance requirements to ensure that you remain compliant with the conditions and undertakings of your licence.

FIRST USE CHECKS

It’s vital that you know what checks you need to carry out inside and outside of the vehicle. Failing to complete thorough checks could result in unsafe vehicles being driven on public roads. Below are just some of the things that need to be checked.

Inside the vehicle, checks include:

Mirrors and glass, wipers and washers, front view, warning lights and gauges, steering, horn, height marker and seat belts.

Outside the vehicle, checks include: Lights and indicators, fuel and oil, AdBlue, exhaust smoke, body and wings, tyres and wheel fixings, electrical connections and security of load. Always remember to record and report your findings including if there are no defects. It is important to have an audit trail which documents

the defect on the check list to rectification. On GOV.UK you can find the HGV walkaround check guidance, print off the full HGV check list diagram to provide a reminder of anything that has the potential to be missed. Pre printed books and electronic apps are also available to record defects.

SAFETY INSPECTIONS

If any of the safety inspection arrangements have changed, including the intervals, update the record online. Any changes to this informationmust be notified to the Department within 28 days of the change. Failure to do so risks regulatory action being taken against the licence.

You may need to revise the safety inspection intervals during the life of the licence depending on several factors, such as the age of vehicles, changes to annual mileage, and the type of terrain on which the vehicles are driven.

The DVA’s Guide to maintaining roadworthiness explains the responsibilities and systems involved in maintaining vehicles in a roadworthy condition and is a good reference tool for deciding the appropriate safety inspection interval for vehicles and trailers. https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/ publications/driver-vehicle-agencyguide-maintaining-roadworthiness

If you are authorised to pull trailers, but do not own the trailer, you are still responsible for the roadworthiness of that trailer when you are using it.

FIRST TIME PASS RATE

This is another area where we get a large number of operators called to a hearing or we have to request an audit of their systems to ascertain how they are managing their maintenance. Our first indicator of failing maintenance systems is a poor first time pass rate for your vehicles at annual roadworthiness testing. The current first time pass rate for goods vehicles is 79% which means that one in every five vehicles fail the test, for which

they are supposed to be fully prepared. Once a first time pass rate falls we start to get concerned and generally, if there are no other issues then we would send a warning letter to the operator to be aware and improve. If we see no improvement or the failure rate is lower, we may request the DVA to carry out an audit to check on maintenance procedures. If that audit is marked unsatisfactory then you will be called to a hearing to explain why, and more importantly, what you are doing to improve. Failure to improve may cost you your licence. So what can you do to ensure good maintenance? The Department publishes the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness which will provide you with all of the information that you require including sample records. Ensure that drivers are carrying out daily walk round checks, and that these are being recorded and that any defects are actioned and recorded. Ensure that all vehicles are receiving their safety inspections and that they are being carried out at the required intervals, if you are unsure there is a guide to intervals in the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness. Ensure that vehicles are regularly serviced and that records are kept, this also applies to tachograph calibration. Regular brake efficiency checks should also take place and the Department would recommend 4 per year with one of those being at the annual test. When you are having a brake test undertaken ensure that you get a copy of the result, that it records braking efficiency and that it is a pass, these should be stored in the vehicle file and be readily accessible. If you contract maintenance out then ensure you have access to all the maintenance records at your establishment address. We do check the notice of refusal to see why the vehicle has failed, to check if there are recurring items, or if a vehicle has been presented for a list! Remember if a vehicle fails a test and is presented the same day for a retest and passes it is still a first time failure. You should have a maintenance planner whether this is a wall chart or a software system it is only as good as the person checking it. Finally ensure that your maintenance staff are properly trained on the vehicles that they maintain. If you look after your first time pass rate, and keep your vehicles maintained, then your vehicles will look after you.

KEY FOCUSES AND CHALLENGES

The logistics industry is an essential part of our economy, providing a vital lifeline to households and businesses across these islands. This was brought into sharp focus throughout the pandemic when our industry featured prominently in the media and appreciation of the sector, and its workers, reached an all-time high. It is essential that now this appreciation is not lost, and logistics continues to be recognised, and supported, as an industry that drives economic growth.

Going forward, the logistics industry is facing a number of challenges, and having recently joined Logistics UK myself and having been out meeting members, with many more meetings to come, these are just some of the key challenges I will be focusing on this year.

NI PROTOCOL

It’s been over three years since the UK’s exit from the European Union and the NI Protocol remains unresolved. Since joining Logistics UK, I have had several meetings with senior ministers and political figures to discuss the Protocol and represent the views and needs of our members, including with the Foreign Secretary, The Rt Hon James Cleverly MP; the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris MP, Minister of State for Northern Ireland, Steve Baker MP; Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer; Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and French Ambassador, Hélène Duchêne. In each of these meetings I consistently made the strong case that our sector needs, and deserves, an agreed deal on the Protocol that banks and builds on the benefits, and reduces the administrative and cost burdens on businesses trading GB to NI, by maximising Trusted Trader Schemes and digital solutions. I will continue, listening and led by our members,

to press both the EU and the UK Government for a negotiated outcome on the Protocol that delivers stability, certainty, simplicity and affordability; and one that is tested with logistics businesses to ensure it works in the real world.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

For far too long, promised infrastructure projects have been delayed. I will continue to push for delivery of these key projects including the A5, A1 upgrade and York Street Interchange. The outcomes from their delivery speak for themselves. The case has been made. They will save lives and grow the economy. Working with members we will also be engaging with the Scottish Government on improvements to the A75, another key strategic transport route.

SKILLS SHORTAGES

The logistics industry has seen a continued skills shortage and has been working tirelessly to train and recruit a new workforce to plug the gaps and keep our supply chains protected. In August 2022, Logistics UK participated in the launch of a ground-breaking campaign aimed at tackling the industry’s long term recruitment issues called Generation Logistics. This campaign, which has backing from the government, logistics businesses and trade associations, focuses on bringing

together the sector to help solve its skills and labour shortages. However, while industry is working hard to seek longer-terms solutions to the sector-wide shortages and recruit home-grown talent, the correct training takes time, and as one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy, a short to mediumterm labour boost is essential. As a result, in December 2022, Logistics UK urged the government in Westminster to add forklift drivers, HGV drivers – of which there is an estimated shortage of 60,000 drivers across GB and NI – and warehouse operatives to the Shortage Occupation List in relation to the Skilled Worker Visa, as well as ensuring mechanics remain on the list. Working in partnership with government departments to address the skills gap, attract new and younger people, male and female, into the logistics industry and retain existing workers – for which, improved driver facilities is vital – will remain a clear focus in the months ahead.

DECARBONISATION

With the deadline for reaching net-zero by 2050 moving evercloser, decarbonisation is a high priority for all operators within the logistics sector. Routes to reducing carbon emissions include transitioning to alternatively fuelled, zero emission vehicles (ZEV)s and

ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs). Implementing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure is also vital to help businesses transition their fleets over to EVs in line with the 2030 phase out date for the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. However, several key concerns remain surrounding charging infrastructure and power supply availability. Figures released by the Department for Transport show that Northern Ireland operators still face some of the worst challenges with the lowest number of public electric charging devices per 100,000 of population. The figure for Northern Ireland stands at 18, which is significantly low when compared to 122 for London, and an overall of 60 for Scotland, and does not also take into account whether they are suitable for commercial vehicles, which need larger bays, increased hight restrictions and longer charging cables.

Operators are also facing increased financial pressures as a result of rising inflation and operating costs. Further vehicle acquisition costs and charges for upgrading power supply at depots, as well as depot charge point installation, are creating additional financial strain for operators. The logistics sector is committed and willing to make the transition to net zero but we need clarity from government on alternative fuels, investment in charging infrastructure and financial support and incentives for businesses to make this costly transition.

Overall, there are many challenges within the logistics industry, but there is much progress being made and opportunities to be seized. Although extremely complex, logistics is an adaptable and resilient industry and there is a willingness to communicate among each other, and with government to ensure the best possible solutions are found. I look forward to the year ahead and working with colleagues from across Logistics UK, the wider industry and senior stakeholders to continue making progress and ensuring practical and achievable solutions are found.

British International Freight Association (BIFA) names new director general

The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has named Stephen Parker as its new director general to succeed Robert Keen, who will be retiring from full time employment with the trade association in 2023.

At the end of 2022, Mr Parker retired from his position as head of Customs UK at DHL Global Forwarding, and commenced his new role with BIFA from the start of the new year. Parker’s career spans over four decades in freight and logistics. Having secured a position with Pandair in the early 1970s, it could be said that he leaves DHL having worked for the same company, as Pandair was bought by AEI, which in turn was acquired by Danzas, which was then acquired by DHL.

A previous Chair of BIFA from 2011 to 2013, he has served on the UK trade association’s Board of Directors and chaired its Customs Policy Group. He will stay as Chair of FIATA’s Customs Affairs Institute.

Robert Keen was appointed director general of BIFA in 2014 and has been at the helm of the trade association during a very turbulent period for its members, in light of the constant changes to trading conditions caused by Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.

FREIGHT CRIME ON THE RISE

The report found that gangs of organised crime groups robbing lorries cost the UK economy £428 million in 2021. The main location such crime happens is independent road parking, typically on the side of a lay-by or industrial estate however such crimes also take place within recognised lorry parking facilities where operators are charged for the use of the facilities.

The RHA hosted a seminar between the NaVCIS and Northern Irish members following increased concerns about freight crime figures. The meeting discussed the number of freight crimes reported – with over 5000 notifications reported in the UK in 2022.

As cargo crime rates rise, the RHA is encouraging drivers and operators to report any suspicious behaviour. Last month saw an increase in crimes targeting HGVs, with a rise in both fuel and cargo thefts. Operators with vehicles parked both in recognised lorry parking facilities and outside truck stops are frequently the target of criminals who attack drivers, damage vehicles and steal fuel or cargo amounting to on occasions to £100s thousands. HGV drivers are being urged to report anything suspicious when parked up to the police and NaVCIS.

NaVCIS is a national police unit hosted by Hampshire Constabulary.

They operate independently, under the direction of the National Police Chief Councils’ vehicle crime section. They are 100% funded by industry under the provisions of the Police Act 1996. Supporting law enforcement partners by investigating reports of vehicle crime and providing specialist operational analysis, advice and support to UK police forces.

Road freight theft is not a new phenomenon. The RHA has long advocated for more safe and secure truck parking. It is wrong for drivers to be forced to park in ill-lit or insecure locations on occasions where there are with no fences, security lights or more importantly CCTV cameras to discourage thieves.

It was highlighted by NaVCIS some of these attacks aren’t just random or opportunist thieves as many of them work in organised crime gangs, which are often linked to broader networks, with a focus on the valuable and resaleable contents of an HGV.

The RHA also believe the reclassifying certain HGV attacks would be beneficial as well. Offences involving violence are classed as “robbery,” and the police take them far more seriously. When no violence is involved, they are labelled as “theft from motor vehicle.’ That implies fewer police investigations and less severe penalties for robbery criminals. This is unacceptable, as lorry load theft deserves its own category.

Without this, organised criminal groups will continue to see lorry load theft as an easy target, being low-risk and high reward with little possibility of detection.

The true extent and impact of cargo crime is distorted by a lack of reliable and consistent data, in part due to the low priority afforded to it in comparison to more high profile offences. It’s also advisable to check your insurance and goods in transit cover. As a haulier or warehouse contractor, you are not only insuring the goods you carry or store – you are protecting your business against the liability you are exposed to under the Terms and Conditions of carriage under which you operate with your customers.

It is important you have the correct policies in place with adequate goods in transit cover reflecting the value of the goods carried and that they are carried under trade body conditions of carriage. If you rely on a trade bodies Conditions of Carriage within your Goods in Transit Insurance make sure the correct updated version of the CoC is quoted and you are actually a member of the trade body CoC that you are insured under otherwise that might invalidate your cover.

Tom Cornwell, RHA Policy lead for Infrastructure and Operator Licensing, said of the figures: “This is a worrying trend, and features in one of the RHA’s campaign priorities for safe and secure roadside parking and facilities for drivers and vehicles. There is an increased focus on security in the industry at present, particularly in light of the cost of living crisis.

“We are calling for facilities providers to look at the security at their sites and ensure that drivers are safe and feel safe when they visit. We have also pointed out that often the wouldbe criminals are organised and not always opportunistic.”

MAN donates €1 million for earthquake victims

MAN Truck & Bus is donating one million euros as emergency aid for the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Some of the money will be used directly for material goods and their transport with buses, trucks and vans, but it will also go to major aid organisations that are providing humanitarian aid in the disaster region. These include MAN’s donation of five fire engines for use in the earthquake zone. The commercial vehicle manufacturer is making this donation in addition to the aid provided by the Volkswagen – Group which is also donating one million euros on behalf of its brands for emergency aid in Turkey and Syria.

“MAN has been closely associated with Turkey for many decades through its Ankara site. When it was founded in the 1960s, the plant in Ankara was our first production site outside Germany. The relations are correspondingly close. In view of this catastrophe, it is clear that we will help quickly and unbureaucratically,” said MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp.

Together with Chief Production Officer Michael Kobriger, he visited the Ankara plant to observe the situation for himself and consequently discussed possible support activities with the team in Turkey. “Our deepest compassion goes out to all the victims of the terrible earthquakes. At the same time, it is impressive to see the great commitment with which our employees have already been able to help in the past few days and continue to work hard for the victims of the catastrophe.”

Logistics UK Calls for Improved Facilities for HGV Drivers

Speaking at a recent Transport Focus event held at the Hollies Truckstop in Cannock, David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, highlighted the issues HGV drivers currently face regarding roadside facilities and the need for drastic improvement.

“I am thrilled to have joined other industry leaders in coming together help to raise awareness of this pressing issue. HGV drivers are crucial for keeping the country moving and ensuring our supply chains remain protected, yet they face a significant lack of hygiene and rest facilities compared with other industries. Government has long been promising solutions and now is the time to deliver.”

Roads Minister, Richard Holden, was also in attendance and gave the keynote speech alongside comments from leading industry stakeholders. Logistics UK hopes the Transport Focus event –run in partnership with Snap, Certas Energy and Logistics UK – will shed a light on the struggles and challenges HGV drivers are experiencing and is urging government to act.

Survival the name of the game for NI businesses in 2023

THERE is no doubt that the past three years have thrown up unprecedented challenges for local business. From the Covid-19 pandemic to Brexit, the war in Ukraine to ongoing political and economic instability closer to home, survival has very much been the name of the game for companies across Northern Ireland and beyond.

In 2023, technology can help small businesses navigate a range of challenges and opportunities. From improving customer experience and driving operational efficiencies, to using data for increased sustainability.

The Government’s Help to Grow: Digital scheme offers advice and financial support to help small businesses adopt to the latest digital technology, with discounts worth up to £5,000 available towards productivity-enhancing software including e-commerce, customer relationship management and accounting packages. Be quick though as the deadline for new applications is February 2nd, 2023. Discounts issued for eligible software must be redeemed within 30 days from issue date.

Are Trends Electric?

Energy bills and transport costs are increasingly big overheads for companies and wipe out your bottom line if you’re not careful. Take time to look at how you can potentially reduce expenditure on company vehicles and energy bills and sign up for any Government assistance to help you achieve this.

As well as saving money on traditional fuels, electric vehicles have very attractive tax benefits for businesses providing company cars. Since April 2020, businesses have been able to claim 100 per cent of the cost of a new electric vehicle against profits in the year of purchase, saving thousands in corporation tax.

In addition, company car drivers will also save thousands of pounds from a vastly reduced ‘benefit in kind’ charge to encourage motorists to go electric and reduce carbon emissions on our roads. Businesses who are creating a working environment that encourages good health fosters a more stable workforce. TTS CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPING TALENT FOR TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS SECTORS

Transport Training Services (TTS), a social enterprise focused on apprenticeships and career development training for the motor trade, transport and logistics sectors in Northern Ireland, is the training delivery arm of the charity the Transport Training Board for Northern Ireland (TTB).

Collectively it is TTB and TTS’s mission to provide a lifecycle development pathway for aspiring and experienced professionals, through the automotive, transport and logistics industries, and to assist employers in these sectors to meet current and future workforce needs.

TTS delivers accredited courses and bespoke training to develop talent for businesses and career-driven individuals, supporting the transport sector to achieve best practice and the highest levels of compliance.

As well as practical driver training for large goods and passenger carrying goods vehicles, TTS delivers compliance training, such as Driver CPC, Transport Manager CPC, and training related to the carriage of dangerous goods (ADR / DGSA). It is also responding to industry demand by offering accredited training on electric/hybrid vehicles (and other alternative fuels such as hydrogen) for qualified technicians, to fill skills gaps that have arisen from new vehicle technology and the drive to transition to zero emission vehicles.

In the last 12 months, TTS has made significant investment, most notably in new vehicles for driver training and in personnel recruitment. The organisation has bolstered its Senior Management Team, its 10-strong board of Trustees, and has heavily recruited in all areas of the business to enhance service delivery and to introduce additional specialist skills.

WOMEN IN WHEELS NI

In 2020, the company launched ‘Women in Wheels NI’, an initiative aimed at encouraging more females into the transport and logistics workforces. To coincide with 2022 International Women’s Day, TTS organised and hosted an event for women to take part in interactive activities, including getting

behind the wheel of a truck or bus.

The event also had female speakers from a broad cross-section of the motor and transport sectors, and a range of employers exhibited on the day. The event saw 120+ people attending and 72 women getting the chance to drive. The initiative is supported by a dedicated Facebook Group (https://www. facebook.com/groups/womeninwheelsni) which now has almost 400 members.

This is good news for transport sector employers that are desperately trying to fill vacancies, as TTS is driving interest from the half of the population that has previously been relatively untapped! The company is planning to run a second Women in Wheels NI event in 2023.

TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS APPRENTICESHIPS

TTS is consistently Northern Ireland’s largest provider of apprenticeships in these sectors with 30% market share. The company recently announced that it has successfully placed more than 100 young people into employed apprenticeships since September 2022, achieving it’s ‘TTS100’ goal. This was the largest number in a single intake in the organisation’s history and took the total apprentice numbers across all year groups close to 250, which is an all-time high. TTS regularly surveys its customers (apprentices and professional development clients) on a range of topics including quality of teaching, teaching methods, facilities and support received. Across the board respondents are highly satisfied. 96% of customers that have undertaken professional development training said they had benefitted from the training course and found it meaningful, interesting and worthwhile, and all but one respondent said the course content was ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ when asked if it was appropriate to their needs/the needs of the industry. Similarly, when asked to rate the statement: “All things considered, I made the right choice following this course/training programme” every apprentice surveyed for the last 3 years has answered ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’. Even during lockdown when apprentice learning moved online, all apprentices responded ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’

TRANSPORT TRAINING SERVICES ADDS EVENING & WEEKEND COURSES

In response to customer demand, Transport Training Services (TTS) has added a range of training courses to a new evening and weekend timetable at its Nutts Corner training centre.

Initially these courses will include IMI accredited training on electric/hybrid vehicles and automotive refrigerant handling (FGas), both of which are for qualified vehicle technicians.

It is expected that other courses will be added later in the year, to offer a greater level of flexibility for employers and self-funding careerdriven individuals. TTS plans to add Level 4 Advanced Diagnostics training to its training programme in the coming months. It is

expected that the new schedule will commence in early March.

TTS is committed to supporting the transport industry in filling skills gaps that have arisen from new vehicle technology and the drive to transition to zero emission vehicles. The social enterprise has recently expanded its team of technical trainers in order to develop its training schedule and to bring additional specialist skills to the organisation.

Renault Trucks UK Sales on the Rise

Renault Trucks’ 2021-22 year-on-year vehicle sales have increased by 18.4% and is, according to the latest figures from the SMMT, the highest of all manufacturers and nearly double the average market increase of 9.6%.

“For five consecutive years, Renault Trucks has grown its MHD market share, with significant acceleration in more recent years,” says James Charnock, Commercial Director, Renault Trucks UK & Ireland. “A number of factors have contributed to this success: firstly, the investment in and expansion of our dealer network whilst ensuring the consistency of service they offer to customers across all touchpoints.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks teams up with Microlise to offer cost SmartFlow app access

Operators of Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks with the manufacturer’s innovative Multimedia Cockpit can now download market-leading Microlise SmartFlow work management software directly into their cabs.

A tailored app version of this popular package is now included within the Mercedes-Benz Truck App Portal system, making the Actros the only truck available on the UK market capable of running it without extra hardware.

The move allows operators to make significant cost savings –a monthly subscription to the Microlise SmartFlow Driver WorkFlow App could be up to 85% cheaper than a traditional ‘wired’ installation, with all associated hardware.

Microlise SmartFlow is already the workflow management tool of choice for many of Britain’s leading fleets. It allows drivers to perform a range of tasks such as reviewing and accepting assignments, accessing site details and planned arrival or departure times, and alerting the traffic office to any problems.

In any other truck, a separate dedicated in-cab screen must be installed before Microlise SmartFlow can be used.Actros operators, though, can now use the Truck App Portal to download the new app incorporating many of the full package’s functions, straight to their vehicles.

The Truck App Portal integrates seamlessly with the vehicle’s Multi-Touch Display. Not only can drivers use this to access and operate the system, but the software also engages with the in-built satellite navigation system for optimum routing.

“As well as being more cost-effective, this development allows users to install the Microlise SmartFlow App a lot more quickly and easily than was previously possible,” explained Richard Skidmore, Head of Customer Service Delivery at Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK. “By teaming up with Microlise

to offer this innovative solution we have been able to demonstrate once again, the wide variety of benefits that our in-cab technology is capable of delivering.”

Steve Watson, Microlise Director of Product, said: “This new app allows Actros operators to get on the road with SmartFlow quickly and easily. It can then save drivers and their traffic office colleagues time and effort, as well as helping with compliance.

“Drivers are logged into the system automatically when they insert their tacho cards. Journeys are fed through directly to the cab and integrated with sat-nav screens. Administration becomes easier, with instant updating of deliveries, collections and consignment information. Communication is improved and delivery paperwork reduced, which helps everyone’s working day run more smoothly.”

Inspection programme to prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders in haulage and logistics sector

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland is urging employers in the haulage and logistics sector to make a New Year resolution to help prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) within their workforce.

MSD is the collective term given to any injury, ache or damage of the joints or tissues in the upper or lower limbs or back. Workers engaged in manual handling and activities that involve the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying can be at particular risk.

HSENI Principal Inspector Kellie McNamara said: “The movement of almost all goods in Northern Ireland involves road transport. As we welcome 2023 we are urging

employers in the haulage and logistics sector to work with us to reduce work-related serious injury and ill health caused by MSD.

“Taking some simple step to properly assess the risks associated with manual handling could prevent serious and potentially long-term injury to workers.”

Until the end of March, HSENI inspectors will specifically look at the controls that employers have in place to manage risks

associated with moving and handling. Inspectors will also provide information and advice to employers on the risk of MSD associated with manual handling MSD is often developed over months or years.

The term cover conditions with specific medical diagnoses such as tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis (also known as tennis elbow) and non-specific syndromes, such as repetitive strain injury.

Employers have a legal duty to assess and then eliminate or reduce the risk of employees suffering MSDs that are caused or aggravated by their work to as low a level as is reasonably practicable. Where significant risks are found HSENI Inspectors may take enforcement action to achieve compliance with health and safety legislation.

CLARKSON PORT SERVICES ACQUIRES OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY SERVICE PROVIDER, DHSS

Clarkson PLC (“Clarksons”) is delighted to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, Clarkson Port Services B.V. (Clarkson Port Services), has completed the acquisition of DHSS, a leading provider of integrated logistics services to the offshore renewable industry, based in The Netherlands.

Established in 1997, and with a presence across a number of ports in The Netherlands, DHSS acts as a gateway to offshore wind farms, with services spanning the lifecycle of turbine installation, day-to-day operation and ongoing maintenance with sector-specialist coordination of port logistics, warehousing and helicopter movements from strategically located marshalling ports. Over the past decade, the business has grown substantially by extending its portfolio of clients internationally.

Clarkson Port Services is active in the offshore renewables, dry bulk and oil & gas sectors. With strategically located ports across

the UK and Ireland, it provides turn-key services including port agency, freight forwarding, customs clearance, terminal handling, shortsea broking and procurement of tools and consumables.

McBurney Transport Group Powers Through Winter

McBurney Transport Group has opted to fit all new refrigerated trailers with solar panels from Genie Insights, following an extensive one-year trial. The 50-watt panels have been fitted to the roof of each trailer with the primary function of keeping fridge batteries in a charged state to prevent battery related breakdowns and costs.

McBurney Transport Group has been using the asset management system, Freeway Fleet Systems, since 2018. The system, which was also supplied and implemented by Genie Insights, manages all of McBurney Group’s fleet maintenance, scheduling and analysis. Using three years of data from the Freeway system, the company was able to ascertain the extent of its fridge battery related costs so recognised the benefit that solar power could potentially deliver.

In 2021, McBurney Group had a solar panel fitted to one trailer and ran this in the fleet for 12 months as a trial, including over the winter period to ensure that the panels could perform all year round. The test trailer operated all over the UK and Ireland including the most remote northerly regions of the country with the worst weather conditions and shortest daylight hours.

During the trial, multiple downloads were taken from the solar panel’s charge controller at key points throughout the year, which gave

visibility of the battery’s state of charge. This data enabled McBurney Group to confirm that whilst there was a draw being taken from the battery when the fridge was not running, the solar panel was putting enough charge back in to counteract this consumption. This data, coupled with the fact that there were no fridge battery related costs recorded during the same period, proved the success of the trial.

Following the successful trial, the company is now in the process of fitting 146 new trailers with Genie Insights’ solar panel kits. Because the solar panel prevents the battery from draining completely and having to be jump started, it also prolongs the life of the battery giving a secondary benefit. Not only will McBurney Group see a cost saving from reduced breakdowns, it will also save on premature battery replacements.

Sammy Hamill, Fleet Manager at McBurney Transport Group explained the company’s decision to fit the panels to all new trailers:

“This is just another example of how we have worked closely with Genie Insights to improve the performance of our fleet and uptime for our customers, which is ultimately what we are always striving towards as a business. We also like to be at the forefront of trialling new technologies, and we were surprised to see how such a simple and cost-effective solution could provide the answer to the battery related issues we know are becoming increasingly common in the refrigerated transport industry.”

Hauliers face near 20% cost increases as business failures soar

Hauliers and coach operators have borne the brunt of huge cost increases for the second year in a row. The cost of fuel, vehicles, labour and fuel additive have skyrocketed well above inflation, in part due to the impact of the war in Ukraine.

The RHA’s annual Haulage Cost Movement report shows that the costs of operating a lorry at 44-tonnes has increased by 19%.

“This directly impacts the cost of living and the prices on our shelves. 89% of all goods transported by land in the UK are moved directly by road, including 98% of food, agricultural and consumer products – road haulage

is essential to keep the UK economy moving,” says RHA. The cost of food has increased sharply. Food inflation is at nearrecord levels at 14.7% in part due to the significant increases in diesel costs up by 39.2% and the major increases in the fuel additive, Adblue by 86%.

“While fuel duty was cut by 5p in March 2022 it was a one

year deal so is expected, but not wanted, back in 2023 and the removal of the entitlement to use red diesel from April 2022 came at the worst possible time for operators such as those operating refrigerated transport and waste management operations. We will continue pressing the Chancellor to reduce the tax burden on fuel by introducing an

essential user rebate of 15ppl.” Vehicle costs have also increased beyond inflation, with product delays and long waiting lists. Increases in energy have put significant pressure on operators, as the UK Government Energy Bill Relief Scheme only runs until the end of March 2023. A review is underway to determine which sectors are eligible for support after the initial scheme finishes and RHA is urging the Government to extend support for road transport businesses to ease the pressure on supply chains. “We are now faced with challenging, recessional times with reduced demand, and we continue to support and advise members on how to control their costs.”

Volvo Launches Powerful Biogas Truck

Volvo Trucks is launching a new, more powerful gas-powered truck that can run on liquified biogas. The new truck can carry out demanding, long distance journeys, while reducing overall CO2 emissions.

Five years ago, Volvo Trucks launched its first trucks that can run on liquified biogas, often called bio-LNG, which is a renewable fuel that can be produced from many types of organic waste, including food scraps. The fuel can reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 100%.

“Biogas is a great complement to electric transport solutions, helping hauliers with their sustainability ambitions and aims towards climate neutral transport,” says Daniel Bergstrand, Product Manager for gas-powered trucks at Volvo Trucks. The new gas-powered Volvo

FH and FM are getting a higher power level of 500 hp, joining the previous 420 and 460 hp engines. The gas engines also get major technical upgrades that makes them up to 4% more fuel efficient**, which together with a new 10% larger gas tank, contributes to a longer range.

“Our efficient gas-powered trucks have a performance comparable to their diesel equivalents. Fuelling up is almost as fast as a diesel truck and the growing network of more than 600 fuel stations for both bio-LNG and LNG in

Europe makes them ideal for longhaul work,” adds Bergstrand. The strengthened gas-powered line-up fits well with Volvo Trucks’ three-path strategic roadmap to reach zero emissions: battery electric trucks, fuel cell trucks and combustion engines that run on renewable fuels like biogas, HVO or even green hydrogen. “Several technical solutions are needed because the availability of energy and fuel infrastructure differs greatly between countries and regions, and also because the requirements

DB Schenker to use first MAN eTrucks from 2024 onwards

The new electric heavy-duty truck from MAN is already seeing high demand a year before the start of production. The international logistics company DB Schenker and the commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus have now signed an agreement to integrate for the first time the new MAN eTruck. The company plans to add 100 new MAN eTrucks to its fleet by 2026. The first vehicles are to be handed over in the first half of 2024.

Cyrille Bonjean, Head of Land Transport at DB Schenker Europe, said: “We want to build up practical experience with e-trucks as early as possible. In this way, we can quickly create an offer for the economy to make supply chains more climate-friendly. That’s why it was important for us to get the first MAN eTrucks. This brings us another step closer to our goal of being net zero on the road in land transport by 2040.”

The first MAN eTrucks for DB Schenker will be volume semitrailer tractors, so-called ultra semitrailer tractors. The low semitrailer height of around 950 mm makes it possible to transport electrically volume trailers with an internal height of 3 metres. Ten MAN eTrucks that DB Schenker will receive in 2024 will be ultra-tractor units. The other electric trucks to be delivered in 2025 and 2026 are planned as ultra-tractor units and swap body trucks.

XD ELECTRIC AND XF ELECTRIC

These fully electric vehicles provide a range of over 500 ‘emissions-free’ kilometres, representing an important step by DAF in the pursuit of even cleaner road transport. The purpose-built Electric Truck Assembly is situated at DAF Trucks’ main production plant in Eindhoven. Construction of the new facility for electric trucks was completed in 18-months. The first DAF XD Electric and XF Electric trucks will roll off the assembly line this spring. DAF expects production to rise to several thousand vehicles per annum over the next few years, in line with the increasing demand for fully electric trucks. The basis for each new generation electric DAF truck is a so-called glider, a chassis without a driveline but with a cab. The glider is manufactured on DAF’s main truck production line. The 4x2 and 6x2 tractors and rigids are then completed to XD Electric and XF Electric trucks in an eight-step process on the Electric Truck Assembly production line.

TWO ASSEMBLY LINES

The new facility comprises two assembly lines. Battery packs are assembled on the sub-assembly line while all high-voltage components, including batteries and driveline,

are mounted on the chassis on the main assembly line. Thorough checks are then carried out at the final stations to ensure vehicles are finished to the highest quality standards. As with every DAF vehicle, the XD Electric and XF Electric are tailor-made to perfectly match the wishes of each individual customer. This is why electric PACCAR drivelines are modular. In addition to the availability of two PACCAR EX engines (with six different performance ratings), the battery packs can also be mounted in different positions on the chassis, depending

The DAF XD Electric and XF Electric were launched at the IAA fair in Hanover in September 2022.The fully electric PACCAR drivelines deliver outputs of between 170 and 350 kW (210 to480 hp). DAF also offers a choice of battery packs using a modular approach. The smallest pack contains two ‘strings’ which together have a capacity of 210 kWh and offers a range of up to 200 kilometres. The largest has 5 ‘strings’ with a capacity of 525 kWh and can achieve a range of over 500 kilometres. The electric trucks are perfectly equipped for rapid charging and even the largest battery pack can be charged from 0% to 80% in just over 45 minutes.

The brand-new DAF XD represents a new benchmark in the distribution segment thanks to its unparalleled safety features and efficiency and its sublime driver comfort. Not surprisingly, the DAF XD series was recently crowned ‘International Truck of the Year 2023’ following in the footsteps of the DAF XF, XG and XG+, which were named ‘International Truck of the Year 2022’.The unique DNA of the XD, XF, XG and XG+ is also a standard feature of the XD Electric and XF Electric.

Velox selected as charging system for ground-breaking fleet trial

The Velox charging system is the first ultra-rapid electric vehicle charger that is already Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) enabled, and it has been selected to take part in a ground-breaking trial to develop smart energy micro-grid networks for fleets.

The trial has received almost £200,000 in funding from the latest round of Government grants as part of its Flexible Innovation Programme. TPS, the engineering firm behind Velox, will partner with EV charge point management platform providers Fuuse – which is leading the project – and Gridicity, which offers back office intelligent energy supply and demand forecasting for EV charging.

The trial will take place at the Power Network Distribution Centre, based in Cumbernauld at the University of Strathclyde.

Smart energy micro-grids give businesses the ability to buy power, store it in vehicles and then distribute it wherever it might need it – to light and heat offices, or run machinery, for example. Crucial to this are V2X capable chargers such as the British-built Velox.

“V2X is the next generation of vehicle charging because it offers fundamental advantages over Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems, of which there are very few operational anyway, while standard chargers that encompass the vast majority of the market have no

V2G functionality, let alone V2X,” said TPS CEO Carlos Neves.

“What this trial will look to prove is that you can feed energy already paid for and in your vehicle batteries back into your buildings or machinery, meaning that you can buy electricity at off-peak rates, store it in your fleet, and then use it elsewhere in your business when that energy would be more expensive.

“For example, a business could charge its entire fleet overnight at off-peak rates, and if those

vehicles are not needed the next day, it could take that cheap energy and use it to power offices during peak times, or even returning vehicles. The financial benefits of being able to do this are endless when contextualised with large electric vehicle fleets,” Neves said.

On site charging gap overshadowed by lack of future-proofing, says ChargedEV

With the latest research suggesting that 33% of companies using or considering using EVs have no charging points at their company premises, the leading EV charging provider, ChargedEV finds that a bigger problem facing the industry is the amount of stop gap charging provision that has been installed but is not being updated to meet future needs. Plugging the gap that exists between companies that either run, or are considering running EVs on fleets, and the number of charging points available does not require a complex solution, but the ongoing commitment to ensuring charging infrastructure readiness should be a higher priority for the majority of businesses, states Mark Pymm, founder of ChargedEV.

“Many businesses have taken the first steps towards EV charging infrastructure provision, with stop gap measures installed as a first step for many, however we see very few businesses taking any further steps after this,” commented Pymm.

“The need for thorough fleet analysis is crucial for ensuring a successful and future proofed infrastructure installation. If the fleets total charging needs are not understood through telematics data, then they can never be successfully met. While the provision of some basic charging points can feel like a

box ticked, it’s likely that companies will be sleepwalking into higher costs and problems further down the road,” he added.

With some businesses considering multiplug installations without a detailed analysis of their fleets’ needs and movements, it is likely that efficiencies will be missed, and over-spending will occur. It is often the case that installing sockets at a business premises results in the need to change grid supplies, a costly endeavour. If a fleet’s

movements mean that its vehicles will rarely need to be charged at the same time, then this cost can be avoided entirely. Mark added, “While the installation of one or two sockets per location may be enough to provide for the needs of a fleet in 2023, it will likely not be sufficient for long as the number of EVs on a company’s fleet rises. More than just underserving its driver’s needs, these stop gap measures do not allow a business to take advantage of the technology and bespoke packages that are available to help them today.”

GenComm Partners research into decarbonisation

Pedro Aguilar and Dr Bodo Groß from IZES gGmbH a German based partner on the Belfast Met led EU hydrogen project GenComm have pointed out that efforts and investments on alternative powertrains have been focused almost exclusively on the passenger car sector, leaving aside sub sectors of the transport economy such as heavy duty vehicles, maritime cargo ships and aviation that together represent almost the same amount of emissions that passenger cars release worldwide. In their new paper the authors warn that the transportation sector may become the most polluting economy sector worldwide unless more action is taken to foster transition to alternative powertrains and clean synthetic fuels.

Looking to the future the authors say: “The decarbonising approaches for the maritime shipping and aviation sectors are still in a very early stage of development, therefore, it is necessary that governments worldwide embark on the task of boosting innovation, research and development in these sectors.

“Turning the electricity generation sector away from fossil fuels is paramount to achieve the full potential reduction on emissions that BEVs and green hydrogen have.”

While there is no doubt that hydrogen can help decarbonise the heavy duty transport sector in Ireland decarbonising the aviation sector and maritime shipping has its challenges. In terms of decarbonising aviation the authors point out: “The potential reduction in emissions in this area can be further improved if other vehicles directly tied to the airports like shuttle busses and taxis are taken into consideration. Another path holding significant contributions to the decarbonisation of the sector is that

carried out by the programme IRIS from the European Space Agency. This programme aims to replace the traditional checkpoint based navigation of modern commercial aviation for a satellite based approach that allows for improved routing and reduced flight congestions carrying a potential reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10% for typical European journeys.”

Another potential alternative for curbing emissions from aeroplanes is the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels but the authors admit that aviation is itself a heavy regulated industry. The authors also looked at the area of decarbonising maritime shipping. They stressed: “Maritime cargo ships are considered to be the transportation sub sector that consumes the largest amounts of fuels worldwide, therefore the International Maritime Organisation is aiming to set more restrictive rules to reduce CO2 emissions from this type of vehicle.” Reaching the conclusion that the transport sector is lagging behind other sectors of the economy regarding reductions of CO2 emissions and may soon become the most polluting sector of the EU group the authors argue that government policies need to change. New initiatives and clean fuels such as hydrogen can help in the long run. GenComm Programme Manager Paul McCormack has welcomed the new research by the GenComm Partner saying: “We are at the global threshold of a clean energy future. Whilst there are many opportunities there are many short-term challenges that need addressed. Clean Hydrogen will play an important role in the energy transition journey away from fossil fuels especially in mobility solutions, long-haul transport and maritime use. We need innovators delivering competitive hydrogen supply chains especially among end-users, delivering secure, resilient and sustainable clean energy solutions.”

Volta Trucks has announced a strong start to 2023 by confirming customer production orders for the first 300 manufacturing slots of its full-electric Volta Zero, with an associated revenue of more than €85 million.

Series production Volta Zeros are due to start rolling off the line of the company’s contract manufacturing facility in Steyr, Austria, in early Q2 2023, with the plant ready to meet the strong customer demand for its purpose-built full-electric medium duty urban delivery truck.

“Volta Trucks has made important progress in the first few weeks of 2023, confirming more than 300 customer truck orders for the first vehicles off our production line in Austria. This covers a meaningful portion of our 2023 production targets, before customers have pilot tested the vehicles. This

is a major achievement and demonstrates the compelling features of the Volta Zero and the trust that our customers have in our ability to deliver,” said Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks.

Northern Ireland’s first selfdriving shuttle service coming to Belfast Harbour Estate

One of the first fully driverless transport systems anywhere in the UK is to be launched in Belfast next year as part of an innovative project led by Belfast Harbour with funding from Innovate UK.

The ‘Harlander’ project will establish an automated passenger shuttle service, providing last mile connectivity in the Harbour Estate from the Titanic Quarter railway station to Thompson Dock in Queen’s Island. The service will transport residents, visitors and employees to venues such as Titanic Belfast, Catalyst and Belfast Metropolitan College. The operation of the shuttle will also support Belfast Harbour’s delivery of a Strategic Transport Masterplan for Queen’s Island. Belfast Harbour is leading the development of the service alongside a consortium of partners that includes REE Automotive, Angoka, BT and Horiba Mira.

The initiative has been awarded £5.5m in funding from Innovate UK, which is working with the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles to invest £41.5m in innovation projects across the UK that demonstrate real world benefits of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Mike Dawson, People and Corporate Services Director at Belfast Harbour, said: “Belfast Harbour has a long track record of delivering and supporting innovation, so we are delighted to be establishing the UK’s first operationally ready and commercially viable deployment of a fully automated shuttle service on publicly accessible roads within the Harbour Estate. This announcement supports our Smart Port ambitions and shows our commitment to the development of Belfast’s Innovation District. “The City’s Innovation District has enormous potential for growth and we at Belfast Harbour want to play our part in helping to build an innovation eco-system that brings investment into the economy. P&O Ferries Cuts Carbon Emissions Through Maximising Efficiency of Sailings

P&O FERRIES has reduced its carbon footprint by 85,000 tons as it took advantage of new partnerships to sail less frequently and maximise the efficiency of its operations.

The integrated transport and logistics company’s bestever sustainability performance – which amounts to a 9 per cent carbon reduction – came as it planned to welcome two new 230-metre super-ferries this year, the most sustainable ships ever to sail on the English Channel, which will result in further carbon emissions reductions this year.

Peter Hebblethwaite, Chief Executive of P&O Ferries, said: “I am delighted that we have made outstanding progress in reducing our carbon footprint in 2022 and can promise that we shall do everything we can to eliminate another 40,000 tons from our operation in the next three years.

“The lion’s share of the reduction is attributable to our innovative space charter agreement signed with our competitor DFDS 18 months ago, whereby we make freight space on our DoverCalais ships available to one another to maintain customer

service levels on the route and ensure its continued resilience.

“We are determined to make P&O Ferries the best ferry company in Europe. That means: the best ships, the best routes and the best value for tourist and freight customers. I can assure everyone that a vital part of our plan for the future is reducing carbon emissions in cargo and logistics supply chains.”

Cutting Journey Times

The space charter agreement with DFDS means that P&O Ferries will sail 9,000 times on the English Channel in 2023, down from 16,000 times in 2019, the last comparable year. The agreement also reduces the time drivers spend waiting at the ports, giving them access to a departure every 36 minutes and reducing gate-to-gate journey times by an estimated 30 minutes.

Other efficiency measures which reduced carbon emissions in 2022 included the fitting of new propellers on an Irish Sea ship, which saved 7 per cent of carbon emissions, and changes to the Larne-Cairnryan timetable, which led to 370 fewer sailings in the year and a 3.6 per cent carbon reduction. Future sustainability initiatives include a hull painting programme and replacing propellers on other ships.

This year P&O Ferries will take delivery of two new super-ferries, which will cut fuel use by 40 per cent through a combination of fuel and battery propulsion. Together with its freight and overnight routes on the North Sea, the revolutionary double-ended ships will offer customers travelling between Britain and Europe an unrivalled range of services connecting sea and land and will secure P&O Ferries’ position as a vital part of Europe’s transport infrastructure into the 2040s.

P&O Ferries and Seatruck switch terminal locations within Dublin Port

Dublin Port Company says P&O Ferries and Seatruck have moved locations within Dublin Port. The move sees P&O Ferries relocating from existing Terminal 3 (East Wall Road) to Terminal 5 (T5), at the eastern end of the port, replacing Seatruck which has relocated its operations from Terminal 5 to a new Terminal 4 (T4), at the western end of the port. The new T4 will be accessed via a new check-in facility on Tolka Quay Road.

All HGV traffic for Seatruck (T4) will now access the port via Promenade Road then onto T4 via Tolka Quay Road and cross over the new Alexandra Road Bridge (the Red Bridge), while all traffic to P&O Ferries (T5) will now enter the port via Promenade Road and travel east on New Promenade Road before turning right on to Terminal Road and then left on Alexandra Road Extension. P&O Car Ferry traffic, meanwhile, will now access T5 via Terminal Road South.

To help all port users with the changeover, temporary digital signage are in place along key routes within the port estate to direct drivers. The team from DPC will also be on the ground to assist drivers.

The relocation of P&O Ferries and Seatruck facilitates ongoing development works associated with the Alexander Basin Redevelopment Project, and the commencement of works on the MP2 Project; two major strategic infrastructure development projects consented and underway to increase port capacity as planned in DPC Masterplan 2040.

Goodyear OFFROAD tyres take another Dakar Rally win with Team De Rooy

Goodyear tyres were the winning choice of 2023 Dakar Rally winner Team De Rooy, which took victory at the end of 16 challenging days of action across the Saudi Arabian desert.

After almost 9000 kilometres of rock, sand and muddy terrain, with almost 5000 of those as special stages, the Dutch team finished first, third and fourth with three of its IVECO trucks. As the only point of contact between the truck and the varied surfaces of the Saudi desert, choosing the right tyres is a crucial part of a team’s preparation. Volta Trucks sees company growth of over 200%

2022 was a significant year of milestones for Volta Trucks, the leading and disruptive full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer and services provider, as the company continues its journey towards production of the full-electric Volta Zero vehicles for customers in early 2023.

Volta Trucks saw the headcount of the company grow by over 200% in 2022, to nearly 700 employees. This included key appointments across the business, including Steve Dichter as Chief Strategy Officer; Adam Chassin as Chief Commercial Officer and Karl Viktor Schaller who joined the Volta Trucks Board of Directors.

In November 2022, it announced a successful extension of its Series C funding round, taking the total investment into the company to over €360 million to date. The funding extension validates the company’s continued progress as it accelerates engineering, testing and certification work ahead of the start of production vehicles this year.

Volta Trucks has completed rigorous programmes of hot and cold weather testing of the fullelectric Volta Zero, between plus 39 degrees celsius and minus 30 degrees celsius. Both programmes were designed to ensure that the

vehicle will deliver outstanding levels of reliability and durability when series production of customers specification trucks starts. Volta Trucks has also completed an on-road engineering test phase of the full-electric Volta Zero prototype on the roads of Paris and London, with some of Europe’s largest fleet operators. Customers included DB Schenker, Petit Forestier, the UK’s The Crown Estate and Clipper Logistics, international parcel delivery service, DPD and Fraikin, leaders in commercial vehicle fleet services. These cargo-free trials gave engineering teams feedback from over 25 customers on the vehicle’s performance, world-first driver-centric cab and innovative safety features.

Evaluations

Throughout 2022, Volta Trucks undertook the first customer and media evaluation events of the Volta Zero Design Verification prototype in the company’s

European launch markets. The evaluations, undertaken on proving grounds in Paris, Madrid, Milan, Selm in Germany and Millbrook, England, saw over 1,500 test drives completed by customers and international media. The Volta Zero was also presented at IAA Hannover, Europe’s largest trade show for the commercial vehicle industry in September, as well as other events including Fully Charged Live, ITT Hub and the Commercial Vehicle Show. Meanwhile, Volta Trucks has confirmed details of its first ‘Volta Trucks Hubs’ in Paris and London, serving the service and maintenance needs of the Volta Zero vehicles that will operate on the streets in those cities from early 2023. The network of Hubs, with more to follow in 2023, will be a critical enabler of the company’s innovative Truck as a Service offer, that will revolutionise the ownership, financing and maintenance of

commercial vehicle fleets.

Volta Trucks has also confirmed that the first Volta Zero vehicle has been completed at the company’s contract manufacturing facility in Steyr, Austria. The landmark vehicle, the first of a series of secondgeneration ‘Production Verification’ prototypes, will form part of a Pilot Fleet of trucks which will be loaned to customers for extended periods in early 2023.This will allow fleet operators to understand how the full-electric medium duty truck will integrate into their operations.

Partnerships

The company has also announced key strategic partnerships with industry leaders, to deliver best-in-class solutions. These partnerships included Siemens Smart Infrastructure, the leader in electrification, to deliver comprehensive charging infrastructure and software to Volta Trucks customers; Carrier Transicold as the sole supplier of refrigerated equipment for the full-electric 16-tonne Volta Zero; Paneltex as the supplier of ambient cargo boxes, and Cake electric motorcycles to test an electric mobile micro hub for last mile delivery.

BPW: DRUM OR DISC? THAT IS THE QUESTION

Keeping vehicles on the road and not unnecessarily in the workshop is key to a successful operation. That’s why, when developing its braking systems, BPW has invested heavily. The result is high-performance, low-maintenance equipment designed to keep downtime to an absolute minimum and customers’ vehicles on the road for longer.

Trailer and tractor compatibility, as well as a vehicle’s working environment, are critical factors to performance and should be considered when selecting the brake for your operation. Here are some pointers to help you make the right decision. But remember, if you’re debating whether to go drum or disc, there is no clear, black-and-white answer. Everyone has his or her opinion. We’ve highlighted some key points so you are better informed when making that decision.

COST

Cost is a major factor when buying and in most cases it is one of the first considerations in deciding whether to fit drum or disc brakes. As well as the purchase price, you should consider the cost of replacement parts, maintenance costs, and labour time, i.e., long-term cost effectiveness.

While a disc brake has fewer replaceable components than a drum brake, the initial cost of purchasing a disc brake set-up is on average higher. The long-term advantage is that with modular components, there is less to replace, therefore servicing time is reduced. The cost of replacing modular parts for a disc brake is much higher when compared with a drum equivalent, with the calliper and disc accounting for the large majority of the cost.

When comparing the BPW standard times for replacing equivalent components, the difference is negligible, and, of course, the standard times are just a guide. Experience would be the deciding factor when comparing the labour time to change components.

As a result of the higher cost of disc brake components, the drum brake residual value is deemed higher, particularly when fitted with BPW axles. At the end of the trailer’s useful life, the owner may wish to sell it, and with the market favouring drum brakes,

this will be easier. Another purchasing consideration when buying used trailers is the cost to renew components that have had a long service life, and, as mentioned previously, drum brake components cost less to replace.

OPERATIONALLY

Choosing the right brake is dependent on the day-to-day operation of the trailer. The disc brake has better braking efficiency at higher temperatures and is less likely to be subjected to brake fade issues. This is because as the disc increases in temperature, it expands toward the pads. When the drum becomes excessively hot, it expands away from the shoes and on rare occasions, can expand to the point where, no matter how far you press the brake pedal, the shoe will not make good enough contact with the drum to stop the vehicle in time. However, with the fitment of retarders / exhaust brakes, this issue is very rare in the UK. The disc brake set-up is fairly exposed to the elements, and dirt, grime, and water ingress from the road surface will have a bearing on braking efficiency and the maintenance intervals required. If a disc brake is used on muddy roads or tracks, the vent holes on the disc rotor can become blocked, causing the disc to become hotter much quicker and for longer periods of time. Drum brakes, on the other hand, are better protected from outside elements, blocking the majority of moisture and dirt, which is why they are a preferable choice when it comes to certain applications such as forestry and

site work.

If a trailer is part of a rental fleet and is underutilised, it’s not uncommon for the brake disc to become rusty. This is because a trailer can be stored for periods waiting to be leased, therefore, out-of-use maintenance is required to ensure the integrity of the disc and pads are not compromised, whereas for drums this is not an issue. Also, when leasing trailers, the make and model of the towing vehicle will vary, and discs are more sensitive than drums when it comes to the issue of trailer and tractor combinations. Most modern tractor units have Coupling Force Control (CFC) integrated into the EBS system. This is designed to give the optimum braking performance and compatibility between the tractor and trailer. From our experience and research, the CFC tends to be more sensitive, and in some cases, the trailer was found to take on more of the braking load than the tractor unit. This can result in the brakes running hotter and the discs and pads wearing out more quickly. The drum brakes’ operating temperatures are also considerably lower, and this results in less thermal loading upon adjacent components such as tyres, camshafts, hubs, and hub bearings.

MAINTENANCE COMPARISON

Brake shoes are sometimes sent for relining at the end of their lining

life, which can bring down the cost of replacing the friction material in brakes. A disadvantage of sending the shoes away is that you may not receive the same shoes back. It is advisable to mark your own shoes so you know the ones you send are the ones returned, not someone else’s heavily aged shoe with no prior knowledge of its historical workload. Increasingly, operators fit new shoes with long-term operational reliability and economy for continued safety and longevity. It is very simple to replace the pads on disc brakes and the back plate can be disposed of accordingly. The disc brake is much easier to configure during initial set-up and also after maintenance periods and pad renewals. There are more step and component checks on the drum brake when refitting new shoes compared to the disc.

SUMMARY

It has been highlighted that the disc brake is the more expensive option, both in terms of the initial purchase and the cost of replacement parts, yet it requires less maintenance if the brakes are used regularly. However, the drum brake has proven to be more resilient as it is better protected from the outside elements, and the life of the shoes and drum seems to extend beyond that of the disc and pads. While drum brake components cost less, remember there are more components to replace. Ultimately, it depends on the conditions the brakes will be subjected to and the workload encountered. There is no definitive answer when asking which brake setup to use, and opinions will always be divided.

BPW heavy axle training is now available at SERC

BPW Limited, one of the leading innovators in the transport sector, has now established a training agreement with South Eastern Regional College (SERC) in Lisburn, County Antrim.

Through this appointment, BPW customers in Northern Ireland will now have local access to the same quality training that is provided by BPW engineers in the Leicester head office.

According to BPW, specifying their equipment is an investment worth protecting to ensure longevity, efficiency, and performance. If the equipment is properly maintained,

fleet operators can be confident that their vehicles will function safely every day. Additionally, fleet managers can also anticipate less downtime, longer service intervals and ultimately, greater profit.

Four Courses

“As the sole provider for BPW heavy axle training in Northern Ireland, we are confident that it will provide BPW’s Ireland-based learners with a more suitable training location. Our SERC instructors have received thorough

training from BPW’s own qualified instructors, and we are really looking forward to it,” comments SERC’s Michael Hutchinson, who will be delivering the training. He was recently elected as Vice Chairman of IRTE Ireland North. “Here at SERC, we aim to be a Centre of Excellence for heavy vehicle maintenance and repair; already we are having a lot of enquiries, with four courses being run this year, but if demand dictates, we can add more courses.” To ensure that the necessary standards and knowledge have been achieved throughout the course, there will be a 40-question multiple-choice test. Delegates who successfully complete this course and pass the test will receive a BPW certificate with their test results printed on the reverse, valid for three years. Logistics UK Calls for ULEZ Mitigations

Logistics UK has reiterated its call for mitigations to be made in relation to the expansion of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) following new figures from Auto Trader showing that van operators will struggle to buy suitably compliant vehicles in time for its introduction on 29 August 2023.

Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager at Logistics UK comments: “Recent challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have impacted the automotive supply chain, including the supply of semiconductors which are vital components in all vehicles. As a result, new van registrations in 2022 were at their lowest level since 2013 and, as more clean air zones have been introduced around the country, the demand for Euro 6 vehicles has only intensified.

“Businesses that rely on second hand vehicles, such as SMEs, have only limited options for purchasing a Euro-6 vehicle, and delays on the

delivery of electric vehicles are also preventing operators from switching their fleets at this point. As a result, in July 2022 Logistics UK called on TfL to introduce mitigations to allow those who can demonstrate that they have ordered – or plan to order – a new or replacement compliant vehicle, to remain exempt from additional charges should they not receive their vehicle delivery in time for the proposed ULEZ expansion start date.

“Logistics UK is reiterating these calls to ensure operators are not disproportionately impacted by vehicle production delays once the expansion is in place. Van operators are at the heart of the capital’s economy,

delivering all that businesses and homes require but have been impacted by significant rises to inflation and other operating costs.

“Logistics UK members are fully committed to supporting the Mayor of London’s aims to improve air quality in the capital with operators of goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes meeting tougher emissions standards since the London-wide Low Emission Zone requirements were tightened in March 2021. However, with a lack of readily available alternatives, further daily charges will divert funds that could otherwise be invested in reducing emissions and decarbonising operations.”

Ford Transit Custom Claims Top Spot for Second Consecutive Year

The Ford Transit Custom is the best-selling vehicle in the UK for 2022, representing more than one in three one-tonne commercial vehicles sold in the year.

Ford sold 42,762 Transit Custom vehicles in the UK in 2022 – more than double that of its closest competitor – achieving 36.3 per cent of the one-tonne van segment. When combined with sales of its passenger carrying version, Tourneo Custom, Ford holds a 39.8 per cent share of the segment.

Vauxhall UK’s Best-Selling Electric LCV Manufacturer

Vauxhall was the UK’s best-selling electric Light Commercial Vehicle (e-LCV) manufacturer in 2022, the second year in a row the brand has topped the sale charts, according to the latest sales and registration figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Last year, Vauxhall sold 5,038e-LCVs, a rise of 73% from 2021. Vauxhall remains one of the few manufacturers in the country able to offer fleets and buyers a fully electric van across its entire model line-up. The Vauxhall e-LCV line-up consists of the Combo Electric, Vivaro Electric, and Movano Electric.

The sales success was underpinned by the award-winning Vivaro Electric, which was the best-selling e-LCV in the UK for the second year running. Throughout 2022,

Vauxhall sold 4,212 Vivaro Electric vehicles to both business and private customers. James Taylor, Managing Director, Vauxhall, said: “Electric van sales grew significantly in 2022, and will continue to grow next year, as more businesses and fleets look to cut their emissions and running costs. NEW GENERATION MERCEDES-BENZ CITAN

We’ve seen it described as ‘a giant in the small van sector designed for businesses with ambition’ so when the opportunity to put Mercedes-Benz latest generation Citan panel van to the test, courtesy of MBNI Truck & Van at Mallusk, we jumped at the chance, as Van Ireland’s Phil Eaglestone reports.

The new Mercedes-Benz Citan panel van has only recently become available here, so we have been among the first to get behind the wheel of the compact L1 model; L2 variants as well as crew van and electric models will be available later in the year. Right away, we noticed some significant high quality improvements on the earlier Citan; with its seven speed automatic transmission, it was relaxing and comfortable to drive, offering effortless handling along the busy roads in and around Belfast.

Our test model came with the Premium trim level and with its 16-inch alloy wheels, and its sharp new design, body-coloured bumpers and chrome trim, complete with LED high performance headlights and front fog lamps, it certainly attracted plenty of attention as we put it through its paces.

Powered by 1.5-litre diesel engine generating 95 hp and 260 Nm of torque, and delivering up to 54 mpg, the new front wheel drive Citan L1 is as safe to drive as they come, with standard specifications including Active Brake Assist with pedestrian recognition technology; Attention

Assist, which detects drowsiness in the driver and encourages them to take breaks when tired; and Hill-Start Assist to prevent rolling back. There’s also a speed limiter, an emergency breakdown assistance call button, rear parking aid with a reversing camera and no fewer than six airbags. Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Speed Limit Assist can all be specified as options.

Don’t let its compact exterior dimensions mislead you, either, because the load compartment

and the driver cockpit are spacious. The Citan L1 has a 666 kg payload and is rated to tow trailers up to a maximum gross train weight of 3,500 kg. Wide-opening side doors on both sides and a low loading sill means it lends itself to a wide range of possible uses. It also boasts a host of other standard features including armrest with stowage compartment, heat-insulating glass all round, a multifunction steering wheel that can be adjusted for both rake and height, an ECO start/stop function, air conditioning and interior LED lighting, but it was the multimedia functions, including a seven-inch touch screen and a multimedia system with ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant and smartphone integration via Apple Carplay that really caught our attention.

With Mercedes me connectivity also coming as standard means that real-time vehicle data can be accessed remotely via a smartphone app to help optimise uptime, safety and security. Features include over-the-air software updates, access to vehicle monitoring in the event of theft. Fuel levels, mileage and remote door-locking functionality can also be checked via the app.

VERDICT

Having spent much of the day with this new generation Citan, we are in no doubt it will appeal to a diverse range of operators – from urban delivery users and small trades to services markets – seeking an economical, practical, compact and image enhancing work van; it ticked all the boxes for us.

Maxus Announces 2023 Scrappage Programme

New scrappage scheme sees IVECO and TfL partner to reduce emissions

London’s mission for cleaner air has seen average CO2 emissions drop significantly in the UK’s capital, and now a new scheme from Transport for London aims to help IVECO eDAILY customers transition from diesel to a zero-emissions vehicle.

A recently announced £110 million TfL fund enables owners of 3.5 tonne diesel vans that are Euro 5 and below to scrap them in exchange for a £7,500 contribution towards an electric model. IVECO will then also contribute an additional £1,000 meaning that new eDAILY customers can receive £8,500 off the retail price of the class-leading model. This scheme is open to small businesses of 10 employees or less, sole traders and charities

operating within London boroughs – visit the TfL website for details of full eligibility* The aim is to remove the most polluting vehicles from the road with a strong incentive for operators to make the switch to an EV. The initiative arrives before London’s expansion of its Ultra Low Emissions Zone in August 2023, a vastly increased area that will see operators charged £12.50 a day if their vehicle doesn’t meet emissions regulations. Switching to an electric vehicle not only

avoids such charges, but also greatly contributes to cleaner air. The new IVECO eDAILY delivers on zero emissions without compromising your mission. Over 22 accredited body builders already have access to detailed technical drawings of the class-leading eLCV, allowing them to take full advantage of impressive features such as unrivalled 15kW ePTO onboard power in both electrical and mechanical options.

Providing technical data to body builders in advance enables operators to hit the ground running and work with their chosen creator to design an incredible variety of bodies from day one. Body builders also have full access to CAN bus which enables onboard equipment to integrate with the eDAILY. The IVECO Daily is world-renowned for being an excellent platform for body builders thanks to its tough truck-based chassis. This core DNA is something the new eDAILY carries forwards into an electrified age. Available with wheelbases ranging from 3000mm to 4750mm and gross vehicle weights up to 7.2t, this eLCV features class-leading payload potential. Designed with body builders in mind, the IVECO eDAILY’s mounting points are identical to that of the familiar diesel model already in widespread use, along with a flat chassis to build on with no parts protruding the upper frame - this makes a body builder’s transition to working on this EV painless.

The IVECO eDAILY is equipped for every mission, featuring a

Hi-Power mode to give performance boosting extra power boost when it’s needed. By depressing the accelerator beyond its natural point additional power is granted for hill starts of up to 30%, meaningful overtakes, and towing up to a class-leading 3.5t. As the only eLCV currently on sale to provide a 15kW ePTO, the IVECO eDAILY’s applications are wide-ranging including tippers,

chilled and refrigerated box vans, ariel platforms and much more can take advantage of the eDAILY’s unrivalled onboard power. Artificial Intelligence Software is able to learn the habits of working vehicles to help preserve the required power its missionspecific equipment demands.

A fully modular battery set means that operators can tailor their eDAILY based on their mission. Offered with one, two, or three 37kWh battery packs, eDAILYs can cover up to 248 miles on a single charge. Rapid charging at 80kW will see this model gain 62 miles of range in just 30 minutes. Peace of mind comes as standard with an eight-year 100,000-mile warranty for vehicles with one battery, or 155,000-miles with two or three batteries. A three-year or 100,000mile chassis warranty accompanies the 2XL Repair and Maintenance package included for all models. The all-electric IVECO LCV is now on sale and can be ordered from IVECO’s nationwide dealer network.

STAYING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW: SIX TIPS FOR UK VAN DRIVERS

A recent survey found that there are over 4.1 million vans on UK roads today. If you’re driving a van for business or personal use, certain rules of the road must be obeyed.

Whether you’re looking to buy a van for the first time or considering van leasing, it isn’t as simple as simply starting up and driving away – even if you’ve long since passed your test. With some insights from Jonathan Beadle at van leasing company, Van Ninja, we outline the essential rules and regulations for UK van drivers – so there’s no need for driving fines and racking up costly penalty points.

LICENCE TO THRILL

Prospective van drivers must be aware of different van weights and what this means for licence requirements. Legally, if you’ve passed your test after January 1997, you’re permitted to drive any van up to 3500kg. For vehicles above this threshold, you’ll need to pass additional tests to have higher categories added to your licence. This will also apply if you need to tow a trailer behind your van. Driving without the correct licence can result in a £1000 fine and 3-6 penalty points.

CARRY THAT WEIGHT

Drivers should also be aware of the van’s ‘design gross weight’ or ‘laden weight’ which refers to the maximum weight it can be loaded. This is inclusive of cargo, fuel and any passengers who may be in the vehicle. The figure should be stipulated on the vehicle identification number plate (VIN). Weight distribution is also important as any goods should be spread throughout the payload area with the heaviest cargo secured in place as low as possible and held in place with straps or cages where necessary. A £300 fine could be incurred if found in breach of these rules.

DRIVING RESTRICTIONS

One of the more confusing aspects of UK van law is the driving time restrictions which apply depending on the weight of your vehicle. For vans weighing less than 3.5 tonnes, rules state that you are limited to driving

no more than 10 hours on a single day – not including rest or breaks. For vans exceeding 3.5 tonnes, you are limited to nine hours a day, though this may be increased to ten hours per day twice a week.

NO NEED FOR SPEED?

Also be aware that stricter speed limits apply to vans than the ordinary car which can cause confusion for drivers. Typically, vans are allowed to travel 10mph less than cars while the 30mph limit still applies in built-up areas. Single carriageways are limited to 50mph, dual carriageways 60mph and 70mph on motorways. This applies to all vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes while those above have speed limiters fitted in line with current legislation.

FREE PARKING

Many van drivers may have delivery

requirements, so should be aware of dropoff zones. Vertical double yellow lines indicate that loading and unloading is not permitted at any time while single yellow means that there are time restrictions in place. Look out for designated loading bays which outline where it is safe to unload.

TAX AND INSURANCE

Much like any car, vans must be taxed annually and the same applies for MOT on vehicles over three years old. Commercial insurance cover may also be required to protect any tools or raw materials you leave in your vehicle unattended.
