DAF NEW GENERATION XG+

COMMENT Hard to believe mid summer’s day is just around the corner; where does the time go? Here at Export & Freight, we have been working towards the return of our Annual Transport & Logistics Awards taking place in September, having just enjoyed a highly successful Golf Masters at the Lough Erne Resort; you can view some video highlights of the day at https://exportandfreight. com/golf-masters-2022/ It was a pleasant distraction from the ongoing issues and concerns of our industry. The debate over the NI Protocol is still very much to the fore, but at least there may be some light at the end of the tunnel with news that Foreign Secretary Liz Truss may be tabling legislation in Parliament as part of a process to find a workable solution. Meanwhile, the shortage of skilled workers throughout the transport and logistics sector continues to cause concern, with calls from Logistics UK urging the Department for Education to expand the terms of its National Skills Fund to include level 2 qualifications so more people can access training to become HGV drivers, warehouse operatives, mechanics or other vital roles. In other areas, the drive towards decarbonising the transport industry is gathering pace. Diesel may not be dead, but one thing is for sure: electrification is the future, with all of our leading truck and van manufacturers well on the road to meeting their obligations of net zero emissions by 2050 – and it’s good news that there are plans to invest £20 million in a new public electric vehicle charging network of over 350 locations across Northern Ireland, an investment that will help address the lack of charging infrastructure. So, what have we got in this issue? We look back at two highly successful exhibitions – the ITT Hub and the CV Show – both of which were well attended and supported by exhibitors, and we have pictorial round-ups of the annual CILT Gala Dinner and the 2022 Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) Annual Conference which was, for the first time, hosted by the Northern Ireland Branch. Well, that’s all for now, but remember, you can keep up to date with all the industry news 24/7 by logging on to our website at www.exportandfreight.com. You should also be receiving our FREE weekly newsletter, sent to your inbox every Wednesday; if not, let us know and we will make sure you do.

Fruehauf Grows Senior Management Team Grantham-based tipping trailer and truck body manufacturer, Fruehauf has strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of three new directors. Robert Roe takes up the position of Managing Director, Paul Maguire as Production Director and Don Wallace as Engineering Director. Announcing the appointments, Steven Cairns Managing Director of MV Commercial, which acquired the company in October 2021, said: “The new additions to the team come at a critical time in the development of the company. We have instigated a three year £30m investment programme which will see a significant development of the site along with the introduction of new trailers and bodies to the product portfolio.” Robert Roe joins with over 30 years’ experience within a Japanese centric multinational manufacturing and supply chain environment. Most recently he had regional presidential (CEO) responsibility for Komatsu Marketing Support Australia.

efficient measures including laser lighting. Don Wallace has extensive experience in all areas of engineering, also including time with Komatsu operations in Australia. His primary focus will be on overseeing the development of the range of tipping trailers and truck bodies currently offered to the UK market.

Pictured here (l-r) are Don Wallace, Engineering Director; Robert Roe, Managing Director; and Paul Maguire, Production Director.

Commenting on his appointment he said: “The potential for Fruehauf in the UK is significant and at present we are concentrating on growing the team to enable an increase in production to meet the demand for both trailers and bodies. In fact, we estimate growing the labour force to 200 by the end of

the year, an increase from 120.” Paul Maguire who also joins from Komatsu will oversee the significant upgrading of production with the addition of a new shot blasting facility along with the latest in plasma machine technology together with several energy

CEO of MV Commercial, Tom O’Rourke who is now based at the Fruehauf HQ commented: “We have had very positive feedback from the market since the acquisition and it is important that we continue to grow our operations in order to meet the increasing demands of the sector. The site at Grantham lends itself to further development, and it is our intention to continue to work closely with the market to deliver the products required, and as quickly as possible.”

Driver, Vehicle, Operator, and Enforcement Statistics The ‘DfI Driver, Vehicle, Operator, and Enforcement Statistics 2021-22 Quarter Two’ report, detailing statistics for July to September 2021, has been published. The report, which is produced and published by NISRA Statisticians working within the DVA, contains summary statistical, performance, and trend information relating to the main business functions of the Driver and Vehicle Agency and other vehicle licensing activity. During this quarter, DVA checked 605 vehicles; of these, the largest volume was for heavy goods vehicles (including trailers), accounting for over three in five of all vehicles checked. Enforcement checks in this quarter were lower than last quarter but almost double that for the same period in 2020 (310). The DVA also conducted just over 194,800 vehicle tests (full tests and retests). This is 19,700 (11%) higher than the previous quarter (175,100), and 88.0% of the previous 5-year quarterly average (221,445). The majority of tests conducted (81.3%) were full tests for private cars (158,458). During April to June 2021, the DVLA registered just over 15,100 new vehicles for the first time in Northern Ireland, 2,000 more than the previous quarter (13,100). Private car first registrations accounted for almost 75% (11,300) of all new vehicle registrations during this quarter. This is the third consecutive quarter that alternative

fuel cars have outsold diesel cars. At the end of June 2021, there were just over 1,248,600 licensed vehicles in Northern Ireland, an increase of 2.3% (28,600) compared with the previous quarter (1,220,000) and continuing the increasing trend from quarter two of 202021. The overwhelming majority (81.4%) of licensed vehicles were private cars (1,017,400).

Driver Theory Tests From July to September 2021, the DVA received just over 28,000 theory test applications, the highest for a single quarter going back to 2012. During the same period, DVA delivered just over 22,300 theory tests, the second highest for a single quarter since 2009. Driver Practical Tests From July to September 2021, the DVA received just over 19,300 applications for a driving test; for the same period, DVA conducted over 17,600 practical driving tests, which is 22% (3,200) above the equivalent number in 2018-19 (14,400).

Driver Licensing The DVA carried out just over 73,550 ordinary licensing transactions during July to September 2021, the highest number of ordinary driver

licensing transactions since 2017-18, and almost 9% (5,900) higher compared to the same quarter in 2018-19 (67,600). At 30 September 2021, there were just over 1,112,200 full and eligible licence holders with private cars/light vans entitlement, an increase of 1.1% (12,500) compared with the previous quarterly total (1,099,700). This is the second quarterly increase in a row and reflects the recent upward trend in driving tests conducted. The number of licensed taxi drivers fell for another quarter by 105 (1.2%), to 8,450 as at the end of September 2021, the lowest number of taxi drivers recorded since our series began in 2013. Enforcement

Performance Monitoring In response to the pandemic, the DVA has continued to review its performance targets. For driver licensing this financial year 2021-22, online application performance was 98.1% processed within working five days (against a target of 95%), whilst paper application performance was 78.3% processed within ten working days (against a target of 90%).

Volvo Trucks First in the World to Use Fossil-Free Steel

of fossil-free steel increases, it will also be introduced in other parts of the truck.

Volvo is now introducing fossil-free steel in its trucks – the world’s first truck manufacturer to do so. The steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and the heavy-duty electric Volvo trucks will be the first to include it. The steel from SSAB is produced using a completely new technology, based on hydrogen.

“We are continuously striving to further minimise our climate footprint. We are also moving towards greater circularity in both our operations and our trucks,” says Sandström.

The result is a much lower climate impact than conventionally produced steel. Small scale introduction of the steel in Volvo’s heavy electric trucks will begin in the third quarter of 2022. “We will increase the use of fossil-free materials in all our trucks to make them netzero not only in operation – but also when

it comes to the materials they are built of,” says Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President Product Management, Volvo Trucks.

Volvo Group has been collaborating with SSAB since 2021. The first machine, a load carrier made of fossil-free steel, was showcased in October 2021. Fossil-free steel will be an important complement to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo’s trucks.

The first steel produced with hydrogen will be used in the truck’s frame rails, the backbone of the truck upon which all other main components are mounted. As the availability

Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris agreement and to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the valuechain by 2040, at the latest.

Michelin Connected Fleet Launches in UK Michelin has launched MICHELIN Connected Fleet in the UK, its new brand bringing together all the fleet management services and solutions of the Michelin Group under one banner. It is also presenting a new suite of connected solutions for HGV fleets, intended to give hauliers and own-account operators a complete, real-time vision of the way in which their trucks and trailers are utilised. MICHELIN Connected Fleet already receives and processes data from approximately 300 million journeys per year, comprising Masternaut in Europe, NexTraq in North America, and Sascar in South America – collectively responsible for 600,000 vehicles operated by 70,000 customers, spanning 48 countries. MICHELIN Connected Fleet collects vital data through a range of comprehensive and advanced on-board telematics systems to give fleet managers a real-time view of their goods, the trucks and trailers making up their fleet, and where they are located. This

which lead to better insights and better visibility. In turn this helps to make operations more cost-effective, safer, more predictable and sustainable.” Data can also be used to help anticipate maintenance requirements, leading to reductions in unscheduled downtime. Plus, the system can monitor tyre pressures and temperatures to considerably reduce the likelihood of roadside breakdowns, which can lead to missed deliveries, vehicle damage and increased tyre costs.

HVO-POWERED NEW GENERATION DAFS HIT THE ROAD JSP Hauliers in Manchester recently took delivery of its first New Generation DAF truck – a DAF XG+ 530 FTG – as part of an expansion programme that will see a further five New Generation DAF XFs arrive in the coming months. As with the rest of the haulage firm’s 22-strong fleet, the XG+ and forthcoming DAF XFs will be fuelled with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) renewable biodiesel.

The HVO fuel delivers up to 90%, or greater, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions ‘from well-to-wheel’ compared to conventional diesel; importantly, use of HVO or similar GTL (Gas-To-Liquid) fuels require no vehicle modifications nor changes to service intervals. “Heavy-duty Euro VI-compliant diesel engines already emit very low levels of NOX and particulates,” said DAF Trucks Marketing Manager, Phil Moon, “and by operating on clean-burning HVO, combustion is more efficient, even cleaner, and emissions are further reduced. “By using HVO, which is produced from renewable feedstocks, the net well-to-wheel carbon savings are very significant. “Key for operators is that no vehicle modifications are required. HVO can be distributed, stored and pumped using existing infrastructure and equipment. The price is marginally higher than regular diesel but with such significant environmental advantages there is a clear case for government to reduce duty on HVO to encourage more use by operators. “One of the main benefits of HVO is that it is a true ‘drop in’ fuel which can be used interchangeably with regular diesel.”

INCREASED EFFICIENCY Steven Singh, who headsup JSP Hauliers

10

alongside his father, Jarnial, and brother, Danny, said, “It’s company policy for us to use HVO fuel in all of our trucks”, he said. “Although it costs us more than diesel, we’re pleased to play a part in reducing our overall emissions. Because of the sustainability benefits, we also find that it’s viewed favourably by current and prospective customers who are keen to minimise their own environmental footprint.” JSP reports that, although the truck has not yet been used on consistent longdistance journeys, the company has seen an initial increase in efficiency and economy over its previous generation DAF XF fleet. The International Truck of the Year-winning New Generation DAF XF, XG and XG+ see a raft of design, safety, comfort and efficiency transformations over the outgoing DAF XF model. All three new cab designs are the first to take advantage of new EU masses and dimensions regulations, with the flagship XG+ outperforming every truck on the market for overall interior space with an impressive 12.5 cubic metres. “We were really impressed by the New Generation DAF range when it was launched,” adds Singh, “and I was keen to get one of

the first examples into our fleet. It feels like a step above the competition, and you can tell that DAF has taken the time and invested heavily into making it an excellent all-round truck. It’s a great place to be – we’ve all been out in it and are very satisfied. “From a driver’s perspective, the DAF Digital Vision System we opted for is without doubt one of the very best on the market,” he said, “I’ve used a similar camera system before, and DAF’s is much better. It’s been well designed and stays clear in bad weather, which is crucial. The interior is a relaxing but practical place for our drivers to live in when they’re away for the week. There are some nice touches, like two fridges and the updated microwave, as well as the centre table which has become a hallmark of the DAF brand. With the XG+, however, it’s the extra space that makes the cab feel so comfortable.”

10-year milestone for popular FORS Practitioner programme FORS, the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme, has said its FORS Practitioner programme has been one of the scheme’s greatest successes after the highly regarded course of fleet management training modules celebrates its 10th anniversary. Since the first FORS Practitioners completed their initial courses in April 2012, over 2800 individual transport professionals have gone on to graduate; each equipped with a comprehensive fleet management knowledge base allowing them to deliver safety and commercial benefits in the workplace. Over the same period, FORS has delivered over 45,000 individual FORS Practitioner training modules. Popularity of the FORS Practitioner programme among fleet managers remains high with 20 new FORS Practitioners achieving full qualification in March alone. With the programme subject to continuous improvement, the 10th anniversary signals the next phase in its development. Plans are at an advanced stage to revise training content and to ensure alignment with the forthcoming version 6 of The FORS Standard. Amendments to the structure of the qualification are also being finalised to introduce greater flexibility to meet the increasingly diverse requirements of fleet managers. Today, FORS Practitioner training is delivered

in ten half-day units, providing a complete package of fleet management learning, including managing work related road risk, safe and efficient fleet utilisation, reducing fuel use and minimising fines and charges. Recent pandemic restrictions have meant that FORS Practitioner training was forced to shift online; a move which proved popular with its greater reach to individuals and will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Individuals may complete the ten workshops in any order and at a pace that suits them, with each session counting as 2.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours – taking part in all ten workshops equates to three complete days of CPD training. Many of those early FORS Practitioners remain active today and are still dispensing invaluable fleet management know-how within fleet operations across the UK. Among the very first FORS Practitioners was Glen Davies, who remains part of FORS as the scheme’s Technical Advisor. “The FORS Practitioner model has certainly developed over the last decade,” he said, “but

Glen Davies, FORS Technical Advisor.

the core principle of delivering professional, detailed and up-to-date training across the key aspects of fleet management remains in place. A fully-qualified FORS Practitioner is an asset to any fleet operation – indeed, I have seen ‘FORS Practitioner’ as a prerequisite on many job advertisements and LinkedIn profiles. I’m very proud that the programme is so highly regarded. It’s certainly one of the scheme’s greatest successes. “In modern fleet operations,” he added, “people need opportunities to build their knowledge, skills and experience. Over the past 10 years FORS Practitioner has provided a structured, practical and methodical approach to continuing professional development in fleet management. It has developed as a defined series of training modules that cover a wide range of topical issues; from writing policies to managing road risk, minimising environmental impact and analysing data to achieve operational efficiency.”

MANVIK DELIVERS EIGHT DENNIS EAGLE NARROW RCVS TO BELFAST CITY COUNCIL Eight new Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) have been delivered to Belfast City Council by dealer Manvik Plant & Hire. Four of the vehicles are Elite 6x2rear-steer chassis with Olympus 19m3 bodies and Terberg OmniDEKA electric binlifts. The other four are 4x2rear-steers with Olympus 10m3 bodies – two with OmniDEKA electric binlifts and two with EuroTRADE lifts for trade waste collections. All the vehicles are Narrow models, to help them negotiate the tight

city centre streets where they will operate. “In the centre of Belfast, we have a lot of older streets which are tighter and can be busy and cluttered,” explained Manvik director Alan Haire. “The Narrow vehicle is only 25cm narrower but it really makes a difference. Add to that the rear-steer feature and also the size difference of the 4x2 vehicles and these RCVs are much more manoeuvrable. “In operational terms, that means they are quicker to complete their rounds and they also cause less of an obstruction and inconvenience to other road users.” Belfast City Council carries out routine service and maintenance in-house but any work under the three-year warranty is carried out by Manvik who are conveniently

located just two minutes away from the council depot on the Belfast Harbour Estate. Alan believes excellent products coupled with outstanding customer support was the key to winning this order. “We are proud of the customer support we provide and it is a vital consideration for every potential customer. Even with the best vehicles in the world, operational efficiency can take a nosedive if they are not well supported. “But we work very closely with Belfast City Council and have a very strong relationship. They’ve been Dennis Eagle customers for as long as anyone can remember and the fleet will be about 90% Dennis now. In fact, they’ve just placed another order for five more RCVs.”

DAF certifies Goodyear “Master” in Supplier Performance Goodyear has recently been recognised as “Master” in the 2021 Supplier Performance Management Programme of DAF. The programme is designed to recognise suppliers in a broad range of categories from product development, operations support and business alignment. This is the first time Goodyear has achieved this score, owing to the work and dedication of its teams who constantly seek to improve the total customer experience year over year. This is particularly true of maintaining its high standards of operational excellence despite a disruptive macro environment.

Frank Titz, Managing Director OE Trucks EMEA for Goodyear said: “Goodyear is proud to receive this prestigious accolade from DAF. By being far more than a tyre partner and working closely together we can maximise added value and drive results for our customers like optimising performance, sustainability and efficiency with innovative services as well as advanced low rolling resistance tyres.

fleet efficiency. Alongside a host of influencing factors such as vehicle type and weight and aerodynamics, tyre rolling resistance has a major role to play.

“To be categorised in the highest category of ‘Master’ from DAF shows the strength of the partnership. We also host the DAF Driver Challenge at our Proving Grounds, support the just-in-time supply by using our own tyre mounting centre, provide integrated TPMS and help DAF customers optimise fleet performance. I would like to sincerely thank both the DAF and our team for making this award happen.”

Furthermore, Goodyear’s Total Mobility end-to-end solution also helped it boost its eligibility for the “Master” certification. By using advanced technologies and

DHL Group and Volvo Trucks Kick-Off New Zero Emission Cooperation With Big Order Volvo Trucks and Deutsche Post DHL Group have signed a cooperation agreement to accelerate the shift to zero exhaust emission vehicles. DHL intends to intensify its transition to heavy electric trucks by deploying a total of 44 new electric Volvo trucks on routes in Europe. “Several of our divisions will benefit from this agreement with Volvo Trucks,” explains Pablo Ciano, Executive Vice President Corporate Strategy at Deutsche Post DHL Group. “The intended order includes 40 electric Volvo FE and Volvo FLs, to be used for package deliveries in urban transport. Electric trucks for longer routes are also part of the scope and DHL has decided to begin using Volvo trucks for regional distribution, starting with four Volvo FM Electric trucks in the UK.” The first trucks have been ordered already, six by DHL Parcel UK and two by DHL Freight. This will result in annual savings of nearly 600 tonnes of CO 2 and nearly 225,000 litres of diesel for Deutsche Post DHL Group. “We are committed to meet growing customer demand for green and sustainable solutions and achieve our long-term goal of

An important factor in DHL’s decision to ramp up the transition to zero emission vehicles is the positive experience it has experienced with its Volvo FL Electric truck, that has been operating in London since November

The cooperation involves adoption of new Volvo technologies and joint development activities within the field of electrification. The agreement also includes analysis by Volvo Trucks of DHL’s transport operations, with the goal to ensure successful deployment of tailor-made electrical transport solutions.

Obituary: Jimmy Byrne, Founder of Modern Tyres Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the industry following the death of popular and well-known County Fermanagh businessman Jimmy Byrne who established Modern Tyres almost 60 years ago. He was 85. In a statement, the company said: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jimmy Byrne. Jimmy passed peacefully at his home on Friday 3rd June. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the Byrne family; our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time.

the business community and across the north and south of Ireland was underlined by the fact more than 500 tributes and comments were posted on social media platforms since his passing; he was described as a true gentleman and a great boss. A spokesperson for Enniskillen Royal Boat Club said: “Sending our deepest sympathy to the Byrne family and all the staff at Modern Tyres on the death of Jimmy. May he rest in peace. Jimmy has been a great supporter of ERBC and Erne Head of the River for many years.”

“Jimmy founded Modern Tyres in 1965 and has been an inspirational leader and huge driving force behind the company. He will be greatly missed, by his family, all at Modern Tyres and his very many friends.” Over the years, Modern Tyres has grown to become Ireland’s largest independent tyre retailers with 40 branches nationwide. The company is still family owned and run today. Jimmy opened his first tyre depot in the Old Railway Yard in Enniskillen, and as his four sons and daughter entered the business, he was able to spend time identifying opportunities within the tyre retail sector. Sites were purchased in various prominent towns throughout Northern Ireland. As the company expanded Modern Tyres made its first major acquisition by purchasing Ards Tyre Service in October 1995; after the success of this came further acquisitions in Belfast, Holywood, Lisburn, Larne, Ballymena bringing the total number of depots to 16.

And a member of Enniskillen RFC added: “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmy Byrne who gave much support to the club over the years. Our condolences to the Byrne family.”

In August 2002 Modern Tyres purchased the Northern Ireland arm of U.K. giant Motorway Tyre & Exhaust centres. This was the largest single purchase of tyre depots in Northern Ireland’s history, making headline new across the province. Further acquisitions were made in Belfast, L’Derry and Strabane during 2003 to 2005. In 2012 the opportunity to take over the last

three remaining ATS branches in Northern Ireland presented itself giving the company a total of thirty branches. Then, in 2013 another opportunity presented itself when Hanover Tyres, with 10 depots spread from Dublin to Cork, came on the market. It means Modern Tyres now have a total of 46 depots across the island of Ireland. That he was well respected in

A keen hillwalker and bridge player, Jimmy was also a former body-builder – he won the ‘Mr. Leinster’ title in 1986 – and a marathon runner, competing in the 1983 New York Marathon in three hours and six minutes. Dearly beloved husband of the late Margaret, he is survived by sons Niall, Rory, Shane, Connor and daughter Siobhan. His funeral took place on Monday 6th June at St Michael’s Church, Enniskillen, followed by interment in Cross Cemetery.

Hultsteins launch sustainable leasing solutions to combat diesel price hike Swedish/UK hydraulic refrigeration equipment manufacturer, Hultsteins, has introduced a new leasing option for temperature-controlled operators facing greater costs since the red diesel tax rebate was withdrawn on April 1st. “The new finance option enables operators of existing diesel TRUs to fit an Ecogen to their tractor unit from as little £9.00 per day,” says Graham Usher, MD for Hultsteins UK and Ireland. “We can offer leasing packages for 3, 4 or 5 years to suit operators’ requirements. The fuel savings annually could be in the region of £9,000 to £12,500 per tractor unit, whilst slashing carbon & other emissions by more than 90%. “It’s an increasingly popular solution,” he continues. “Ecogen literally bypasses the existing fridge engine and during transit, it virtually dispenses with fridge diesel altogether. Moreover, if you have a Scania, Volvo or Renault, Ecogen can be easily retrofitted.”

18

EXPORT&FREIGHT

Usher explains that Ecogen does not replace the existing diesel refrigeration system, but instead works in tandem with the fridge trailer unit. Ecogen is fitted to the tractor unit and is powered by the engine PTO. This runs the 30 Kva alternator that generates 400v @ 50htz of 3-phase electric. By simply plugging the lead from the Ecogen into the fridge, using the standard 5 pin socket, says Hultsteins, operators can benefit from running the diesel fridge on its electric motor when coupled to the tractor. Hultsteins add that a small amount of diesel will be required from the tractor unit to power the Ecogen but even so, the

company claims diesel consumption to the fridge unit will be reduced by up to 90%. Usher says that for a typical diesel-powered fridge unit operating for 56 hours per week and using 3 litres per hour, an annual fuel bill will be over £12,000. However, he adds that by fitting an Ecogen power-generating system the fuel cost per fridge unit will be significantly reduced, making payback for the equipment possible in under two years. Graham Usher goes on to explain that, based on Hultsteins’ fuel and usage assumptions, a carbon saving of over 20 tonnes per year, per tractor unit can be expected from each Ecogen system.

RENAULT TRUCKS T HIGH 520 EVOLUTION TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES Scoring top marks for performance, reliability and fuel efficiency in Export & Freight’s annual awards in 2019 when it won Fleet Trucks of the Year, this latest updated and upgraded Renault T High 520 6x2 TML has taken another major step forward in terms of driver comfort and safety, as Phil Eaglestone reports. Described as ‘the most important evolution’ since the total renewal of the manufacturer’s ranges in 2013, the revamped and redesigned Renault T High is an even bigger head turner, as we discovered when we took a test drive around the roads of Northern Ireland, courtesy of dealers Diamond Trucks. Powered by Renault Trucks fuel efficient DTI 13 engine, coupled with an Optidriver gearbox for improved gear shifting, our Renault T High 520 ‘Evolution’ model, complete with High Sleeper Cab was a joy to drive as we took in a variety of road conditions from Mallusk up to Garvagh and Limavady, and along the north coast before heading back on to the M2 to the Diamond Trucks depot. Packing power with performance,

20

EXPORT&FREIGHT

it was a smooth and relaxing ride, made all the more stress free by a range of safety features designed with the driver in mind. These include a Lane Departure Warning System which issues an audible signal to warn the driver that an inadvertent change has been detected in the vehicle’s direction of travel, and an Advanced Emergency Braking System which warns of a possible collision then brakes and stops the vehicle completely without intervention from the driver.

it also allows you to retain control of the vehicle steering by preventing wheel lock, primarily in emergency braking situations.

Other safety features of note was Hill Start Assist which ensures brakes are held for a few seconds after releasing the pedal to make hill starts easier, Electronic Stability Control which allows you to maintain directional control and prevent the vehicle from overturning in critical situations;

The wrap-around dashboard brings controls within easy reach. It includes automatic electric parking brake, adaptive cruise control, multi-function steering wheel with controls for telephone, cruise control, speed limiter and menu navigation, as well as a 7” HD main display, while getting in

Fitted with a three-axis adjustable steering column, this enables you to adopt the driving position that suits you best. The column is adjusted using a single foot control to set both the position and the tilt of the steering wheel. Adjustment with both hands on the wheel and instant locking ensures both precision and safety.

and out is also made easy, thanks to a door opening angle of 85°.

DRIVER FRIENDLY TOUCHES The driver’s environment is further enhanced by air conditioning and automatic de-frosting of the side windows, windscreen and rearview mirrors. Other touches that offer drivers a comfortable life on board include multiple storage spaces, a spacious and comfortable rest area within the High Sleeper Cab, and carefully considered finishes and interior trim designs. For this latest version of the Renault T High, a tablet and smartphone holder has been added, positioned within easy reach of the driver, providing access to several devices simultaneously and charging them via two USB-C sockets.

TEST DRIVE

A new A4 document storage drawer has also been added. On the passenger side, the vehicle has two storage spaces with a total capacity of 7 litres (including a 2-litre refrigerated space). A truck is not only a driver’s work tool, of course, it is also where they rest and sleep so the quality of the bed is therefore crucial and while we didn’t have an opportunity to test out the bunk, we are reliability informed that the thickness of the memory foam mattress and the doubling of the springs have significantly improved comfort levels, and for added convenience, two USB-C sockets have also been added to the bunk area to make it easier to charge electronic devices, while keeping them within easy reach of the driver during rest periods. A real home from home. While the Renault Trucks T High comes with LED lights as standard, as we would expect, additional LED lights have also

been positioned on the inside of the doors to illuminate the door sill for increased driver safety when getting in and out of the vehicle at night. We didn’t do a fuel test, but we are told Renault Trucks have been able to produce more fuel savings – up to 3% more – by improving the

cab’s aerodynamics, especially around the front grille and wheel arch extension and by adding a new version of the Optivision predictive cruise control system and an optimised cruise control system with two selectable driving modes. ‘Eco on’ is the default mode and optimises fuel consumption

by adjusting acceleration, gear shifting, cruise control and deceleration, whereas “Eco off” allows drivers to change the driving mode. An indicator gives drivers real-time information about their driving style.

VERDICT Having spent several relaxing hours behind the wheel, we can confidently say that this Renault Trucks T High 520 6x2 certainly ticks all the right boxes, with a comfortable and safe driving environment and a performance to match, but you don’t have to take our word for it, go find out for yourself.

OFFICIAL UK LAUNCH

JOST UK’S AUTOMATIC COUPLING SYSTEM HAILED A GAME CHANGER JOST GB Ltd recently held the official UK launch of the innovative JOST KKS automatic coupling system at Donington Park; Export & Freight’s Phil Eaglestone went along to find out more. Customers were able to see the award winning KKS in action showcasing the benefits that this system offers; it enables the driver to couple and uncouple via remote control providing a key component for autonomous driving and the future of logistics. Customer feedback has already been positive. Comments Phil Moon, Marketing Manager at DAF Trucks UK: “My overall impression of the KKS is how simple it is, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and being able to do that from the drivers’ seat. So eliminating a lot of the risk areas associated with what can be a quite hazardous task. Technological solutions like the KKS help to move the transport industry forward in terms of improving productivity, efficiency and safety, particularly of drivers.” As a world-leading producer and supplier of safety-critical systems for the commercial vehicle industry, JOST is the specialist for components that link trucks and trailers, and this link is now being revolutionized with its new KKS automatic coupling system which will clearly help operators increase efficiency, convenience and safety with one single product. As we all know, coupling and uncoupling

a trailer is still a lengthy, expensive and hazardous procedure. The truck driver has to be aware of many different things, each of which are time-consuming and pose a hazard to health and safety. According to figures from the DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance), professional truck drivers suffer falls quite often. Simply getting in and out of the cab can result in such an accident, potentially causing injury. As the global market leader for fifth wheel couplings and landing gears, JOST’s launch of the KKS represents a smart solution for the future of coupling. And as already mentioned, it is easy to use. The driver is guided through the coupling process, with sensors providing live information on the KKS remote control throughout every step of the process. With the KKS, the driver no longer needs to climb out from the cab, crank down the landing gears, climb behind the cab, unplug the spiral cables and pull the fifth wheel open when uncoupling. Instead, the Modul E-Drive electric landing gears automatically deploy at the push of a button and the fifth wheel is unlocked remotely. This eliminates the danger caused by climbing on

and off the catwalk, as the spiral cables for air, electrics and ABS/EBS no longer need to be detached manually: the KKS connector on the fifth wheel and trailer detaches all the necessary electrical and pneumatic connections between the truck and trailer. For the coupling process, the driver raises the vehicle chassis to bring the fifth wheel coupling plate into contact with the trailer support plate. Equipped as standard, the support plate sensor indicates that the trailer plate is touching. Once this information is displayed on the KKS remote control, the truck is reversed until the king pin has securely engaged in the lock of the fifth wheel coupling and the mechanism closes. The position of the king pin and the correct locking of the fifth wheel coupling are also monitored by sensors and displayed to the driver on the KKS remote control. Together with the mechanical connection via the king pin, the KKS connector also automatically connects the air, electrics, ABS and EBS.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY Using a KKS can cut the time required to change a trailer by up to 50 percent, as there is no need to manually crank the landing gear, connect the supply lines or open the fifth wheel coupling. The KKS significantly reduces the total costs for each circuit, with savings of up to 50 percent possible during the coupling and uncoupling process. It is particularly well suited for transport companies which perform coupling processes often and drive short distances, such as those

Says Paul Allera, Technical Director, The Road Haulage Association: “My overall impression of the KKS is that it’s a fantastic system. I think the KKS is a great addition to any fleet. Technological solutions like this are always welcome in the transport industry. For many years things haven’t changed between how we couple and uncouple a trailer, now for things to be futuristic is far better.”

in on-site transport, as the time saved here really pays off financially. Another application is the transport of goods where safety plays a key role, such as hazardous goods, as the sensor monitoring guarantees a high level of security against trailer losses and incorrect coupling. The KKS is also an ideal solution for transport between production sites and logistics facilities. Contributing to the future of logistics Joachim Dürr, CEO of JOST Werke AG, is thoroughly impressed by the KKS automatic coupling system: “The innovative KKS provides our customers in the highly competitive logistics sector with clear benefits with regard to safety and efficiency. And the drivers also benefit, as using the KKS significantly reduces the risk of injury during the complex coupling process while simultaneously making it more convenient. I am delighted that we are taking a big step towards highly automated, convenient and safe logistics solutions with this system and are making our contribution to autonomous driving as a supplier.”

CUSTOMER REACTION And customers agree. We’ve already heard from Phil Moon at DAF Trucks. Adds Richard Owens, Group Marketing Manager, Don-Bur (Bodies & Trailers) Ltd: “First impression of the KKS system is that is it quite intriguing. It’s radically different in terms of the auto coupling system solutions. The KKS system is one way of engineering out a lot of the problems that are associated with coupling process. It’s a good route forward. Advances in solutions like this are critical for this industry to drive safety, efficiency, turnaround times but we are advocates for this type of development.”

And comments Tom Stott, Technical Sales Manager, Tiger Trailers: “The safe practice of the coupling and uncoupling method is significant. The impact of a system like this from a cost saving point of view and more importantly health and safety is really important.” JOST GB and JOST World management would like to thank everyone involved which made the event a huge success, “Emma Tyrer for organising this event, Stuart Oliver, Sean Taylor, John Newell, Stephen Newell and Giti tyre for the thrilling customer entertainment, and to Paul Allera from the RHA and Vic Bunby from Road Transport Media for your ongoing support.” Don’t worry if you missed this event, the JOST team will be exhibiting at the Road Transport Expo 30th June – 2nd July 2022 where the KKS will be back in the UK and available for demonstration.

Seamus Leheny Policy Manager - Northern Ireland. Logistics UK

INDUSTRY NEEDS SUPPORT, NOT BLAME Throughout the pandemic, the logistics industry worked tirelessly to protect the supply chain. However, despite logistics workers being the unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping shops, schools, hospitals and locked-down families supplied with all the goods and medicines the country needed, a new report into Road Freight Supply Chains published by the Transport Select Committee has, in the view of Logistics UK, unfairly placed the blame for issues faced by the sector at the industry’s door. One of the main topics covered in the report is the overview of the sector’s recruitment problems, which Logistics UK considers confused and misleading. Like nearly every other industry in the UK, logistics is facing issues caused by a combination of factors, none of which are within its control. These include an ageing workforce, the loss of European workers after Brexit and the impact of the COVID-19 on testing of new HGV drivers. Despite operating on incredibly narrow margins - often of less than 1% - industry has already made significant investment in the next generation of workers through the Apprenticeship Levy with £700m paid in by our industry to date. However, due to a lack of appropriate qualifications for the sector, which did not even exist until 2021, only £150 million has been able to be drawn down thus far, representing a tax on our sector and a huge, missed opportunity for recruitment. Additionally, the greatest proportion of logistics jobs are level 2, which is low to middle-skilled (41.8%). As a result, Logistics UK is urging the Department for Education to expand the terms of its

National Skills Fund (NSF) – an initiative to help adults train into new careers – to include level 2 qualifications so more people can access training to become HGV drivers, warehouse operatives, mechanics or other vital roles which the logistics industry needs to fill desperately. Furthermore, driver welfare also acts as a main barrier for recruitment and retention. In the view of Logistics UK, it isa national disgrace that thousands of HGV drivers, who have worked so tirelessly to protect the supply chain during the pandemic, are still unable to access suitable safe and secure truck stops across the country, with many forced to take their legally mandated rest breaks on the side of roads, something that we, as a business group, have campaigned on for many years. It is not the industry’s responsibility to build and run these facilities, not least because they are commercial enterprises, many of which cater for all road users, not just the haulage sector. The real problem that has not been resolved is local authority planning rules and red tape that prevent these facilities being built in the first place. To suggest that these new builds, which are used by all road users, could be constructed as a result of a levy on hauliers would place an

unfair, disproportionate burden on the industry. To address the issues facing the sector, the logistics industry has already come together to create and fund a massive skills and recruitment campaign, aimed at young people, women and other under-represented groups, to attract new talent into the sector, which will launch shortly. Moving forwards, it is vital that government works with industry to address these concerns. Northern Ireland is vital to UK industry and the wider economy. It is therefore crucial that we get a functioning NI Assembly up and running again to enable local decision making on skills funding priorities. As part of a recent meeting between Logistics UK and its members, it was highlighted that proper driver facilities are only available on the M1 and M2 through private service stations. On the A6, A1 and A5 there is a serious lack of proper safe parking for goods vehicles. Such facilities should be considered at the time of upgrading our strategic road network, not an afterthought when the road has already been built. Its only through local representation and a functioning government can we press for such infrastructure in the future.

Logistics UK is working with the CBI to provide much needed aid to the humanitarian crisis in Eastern Europe - if you can provide air freight capacity, or road transport to move donations of medicines, clothing and other items to Poland and Germany, email supplyukraine@logistics.org.uk and we will link members with the CBI to co-ordinate the detail. Thank you in advance

£2,000 Fines on Tachograph Charges

Missed Deadline for Tachograph Downloads

A County Armagh operator was convicted at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £2000 after DVA enforcement officers stopped a 2 axle Scania, in combination with a 3 axle trailer in the Larne area.

A County Antrim operator has been convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £600 on tachograph charges. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement Officers stopped a 2 axle articulated heavy goods vehicle in the Belfast area. During an examination of the vehicle an analysis of the tachograph unit and driver card took place.

During an examination of the vehicle an analysis of the tachograph unit highlighted a number of offences, namely five occasions of causing or permitting the driving of a vehicle without a valid digital tachograph card being used in the recording equipment; failing to download the vehicle tachograph unit within the timeframe as required under EU regulations missing the deadline by 69 days and the downloading of the digital driver’s card missing the deadline by 134 days.

The operator was found guilty of failing to download the driver’s tachograph card within the legislative provisions. The operator was also found guilty of failing to download the vehicle unit within the 90 day deadline and had in fact missed the deadline by 1229 days. The operator also failed to have the vehicle unit calibrated correctly. The unit had missed its periodic inspection and the calibration date had expired.

It was also established that the vehicle which was stopped was not specified on a Goods Vehicle Operators Licence.

Fined for Tachograph and Licensing Offences

Charged with Multiple Offences A County Tyrone Haulage company has been convicted of 12 offences at Belfast Magistrates court on various charges and fined a total of £2,400.

A County Londonderry operator was convicted at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court of a number of offences and fined a total of £2,150.

The convictions arose when DVA Enforcement Officers stopped a company vehicle and discovered the driver was in possession of and using two digital driver’s tachograph cards - one of which he was not the named holder.

The operator was found guilty of operating a vehicle not specified on a valid Goods Vehicle Operator Licence. The operator was also found guilty of failing to download the driver’s tachograph card and vehicle unit within the legislative timescales.

An in-depth investigation identified two operators acting as one despite having their own individual operator licences.

Analysis of the tachograph data identified that the driver’s digital card had not been downloaded in 328 days, 300 days outside the 28 day EU Tachograph Limit and the download of the Vehicle Unit was 1025 days overdue.

The operator before the court was convicted of causing or permitting, on 3 occasions, the driving of a vehicle without the driver using a tachograph card; 4 occasions of permitting a driver to drive in excess of four and a half hours without taking a break; 1 occasion of permitting a driver to exceed the maximum driving time in a fortnight; 3 occasions were the operator failed to produce tachograph data on request and 1 occasion of failing to produce records.

The operator was also convicted of causing or permitting the driving of a vehicle without the driver using a tachograph card on 5 different occasions. The convictions arose when DVA Enforcement Officers examined a 4 axle tipper lorry in the Coleraine area.

a series of intelligent and innovative technologies that work together in such a way as to give noticeable reductions in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Handling, even with six other people on board, was excellent, with a multi functional leather steering wheel complete with trip computer, meaning many of the controls were at our fingertips; the instrument cluster with its high definition display was sharp and easy to read, while the automatic gear selection was ideally positioned on the right hand side of the steering column. The Hill Hold function came in handy on more than one occasion, as did the Vito’s excellent turning circle which would as good as if not better than a taxi. The Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer has all the other features you would expect in a vehicle of this class including cruise control, Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, rain

sensor, ECO start/stop function, and tyre pressure monitoring, in addition to a superb audio system, with 2-way speakers front and rear, heated and adjustable exterior mirrors, central locking with radio remote control immobiliser, and child safety locks. Not only is the Vito Tourer a practical vehicle, it is also a great looking one, with its 10-spoke alloy wheels, front and rear coloured bumpers and tinted windows. It is a perfect people carrier for the likes of image conscious taxi drivers or companies moving staff and customers around - and with a large boot area sufficient for holding up to eight good sized suitcases, it is also ideal for those escaping off into the country for a well earned holiday! We certainly spent an enjoyable four days touring around, taking in the many sights

and attractions that Northern Ireland has to offer, an experience made all the more pleasant thanks to the Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer. Well worth checking out!

VOLVO TRUCKS INCREASES I-SHIFT GEARBOX SHIFTING SPEED Volvo Trucks’ intelligent and automated I -Shift gearbox is now faster than ever. The quicker response provides improved driveability and smoothness to the driving of both diesel and electric heavy-duty trucks. The significant driveability improvement, which has been added to drivelines at all emission levels, is achieved by the new way in which the I-Shift gearbox interacts with the engine. The update includes faster clutch activation that results in a shorter torque interruption. It also makes the gear shifting smoother, for a more harmonious driving experience. “Faster gear shifting makes it possible to optimise the gear selection more efficiently. And the more shifting events that the road and terrain requires, the more the improvements will be appreciated by the driver. With up to 30 per cent faster gear changing now possible using I-Shift, drivers will certainly experience a very positive difference,” says Pär Bergstrand, Heavy Duty Transmission Manager at Volvo Trucks. The high-speed shifting is achieved based on several key improvements. First, updated sensors now provide data with higher accuracy to the control unit, which features new software and a faster microprocessor, for

28

EXPORT&FREIGHT

much quicker calculation times. Second, an added disc in the gearbox brake makes it react faster before a gear shift, so it can be done earlier. Finally, the air volume has also been reduced in different actuation systems, for example the shift forks,

the clutch and the gearbox brake, to further enable a faster gear shift. When I-Shift was introduced in 2001, it was the first-ever automated transmission designed for heavy duty trucks. It has the ability to work with the entire powertrain, as this transmission

system is tailored to the engine and vehicle components already from the development phase, contributing to lower fuel consumption – and thereby reduced environmental impact. It also promotes increased safety and other important benefits including reduced noise, vibrations and physical strain on the driver. These latest advances to gain 30 per cent faster gear changes are further evidence of Volvo’s never ending, continuous improvement actions to provide better all-round driveability. “With all the improvements and new variants over the years, I-Shift has had an outstanding ability to solve more and more advanced tasks in efficient ways. This means not only delivering high performance and fuel efficiency but also outstanding driveability and comfort for the drivers,” adds Bergstrand. Today all heavy-duty Volvo trucks are built with I-Shift as standard. Since its introduction, more than one million trucks have been sold globally with Volvo’s unique I-Shift technology.

The premium tyre maker employed innovative rubber compounds and state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques to deliver further refinements to the tried-and-tested Conti EcoPlus HT3+ long-distance transport tyre. Its performance has been optimised for both rolling resistance and mileage. As a result, the tyre promises outstanding fuel efficiency, while also offering excellent retreadability. Additionally, the new 3PMSF marking verifies the tyre’s safety credentials for all weather driving, including in challenging snow or ice-affected road conditions. The Conti EcoPlus HT3+ also offers the best possible grip in the wet, reflected by the EU tyre label’s A rating for this characteristic. All in all, this tyre is the ideal choice for keeping actual overall fleet costs to a minimum. With the updated Conti EcoPlus HT3+, Continental is offering its fleet customers a long-

“We have now completed our product line for emissions-conscious fleet operators with the arrival of the Conti EcoPlus HT3+,” remarks Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Tyre Development at Continental. “This robust, long-lasting and fuel-saving truck tyre helps our fleet customers to make their long-distance transport logistics more sustainable.”

distance transport tyre that achieves remarkable fuel efficiency. The tread’s two-layer construction and the improved rubber compounds for both the tread and sidewall have made it possible to further reduce rolling resistance and increase mileage. This is mainly down to the refined production process featuring Fuel Saving Edge technology and an optimised sipe pattern. The new groove geometry more effectively

Fuel-efficient commercial vehicles are good for both fleet expenditure and the environment. The impact of rolling resistance on fuel consumption can be as high as 30 percent, and is therefore a key lever for tyre developers. Rolling resistance is also one of the parameters used by the VECTO simulation tool for calculating a truck’s fuel efficiency, and continues to be a key issue for the transport industry which, as has been well documented, needs to achieve a drastic cut in its CO2 emissions by 2030.

Team MAN Truck & Bus UK Transaid “Cycle Malawi 2022” MAN Truck & Bus UK is continuing to support of the life changing charity Transaid and in doing so sponsor a three man team in the Cycle Malawi 2022 challenge. The two-wheel adventure, taking place from 1st to the 9th October, will see the cyclists cross Malawi, the country commonly known as the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. Marking the international development organisation’s 10th African cycle challenge, the MAN team, along with 33 other riders from the transport and logistics industry, will be in the saddle for five days covering an average of 96 kilometres per day in temperatures reaching 84°F and above. Stefan Thyssen, Managing Director MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd, said: “I’d like to thank everyone from across the company who showed an interest in being involved in this epic adventure, it created such an interest that we literally had to pull names from a hat. I know I speak for the entire MAN Truck & Bus team when I wish our ambassadors, Kate, Tom and Craig the best luck in their once in a lifetime opportunity. Riding a route graded as “challenging” MAN Truck & Bus UK’s team of volunteers, comprising of Kate Carter (MAN Truck & Bus UK Truck Sales) Tom Gosbee (MAN Truck & Bus UK TopUsed) and Craig Shannon (MAN Truck & Bus Manchester Parts Manager) will cover almost 500 kilometres and in doing so have the unique opportunity to discover Malawi and rural Africa away from the tourist trail. After four days crossing the country the penultimate day’s riding includes an afternoon tackling the Zomba Plateau, a stunning tablelike mountain which soars to more than 2,080m and presides over the surrounding area.

Stefan added: “This event offers an incredible opportunity to be part of something really special, with teams from across the industry coming together to raise vital funding for an amazing and very special charity. Over the years the Transaid Charity has delivered countless professional driver training programmes which has led to a more skilled driver fraternity and at the same time opened up access to much needed healthcare across Malawi.”

Transforming Lives Founded by Save the Children, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and its Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, the international development organisation shares 25 years’ worth of expertise in 23 countries with partners and governments – empowering people to build the skills they need to transform their own lives. Of the mammoth ride ahead of them, Kate Carter, said: “The opportunity to be a brand ambassador for MAN whilst supporting a fantastic charity that is transforming lives by helping to provide a professional driver training programme, is going to be incredible experience. As a keen cyclist my initial though was - I’d love to have an involvement in this, then when looking at the Transaid website I read that 75% of maternal deaths could be avoided if there was improved access to vital childbirth-related care, my mind was made up, I can’t wait.” Tom Gosbee commented, “I’m delighted to have been chosen to join the Cycle Malawi 2022 Challenge as an ambassador for MAN Truck & Bus UK. On reflection I don’t feel I do enough to support charities within my day to day life, but this will change and the thought of helping Transaid and the great work they do is just the start. “Until recently my parents lived in South Africa helping and working with local schools and charities. Through them I saw the difference their

efforts made to people’s lives, so in many ways I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact that these types of events can have,” concluded Tom. Craig Shannon added, “It’s going to be an honour to represent MAN in this event whilst raising money for such an amazing charity. Having organised and participated in the 2012 MAN 20 Years Transaid Cycle Challenge (North West event) it will be an absolute pleasure to travel to Africa exactly 10 years later and raise even more money for Transaid and the fantastic work they do.” Transaid works in two core areas, road safety and access to health, to solve two of the biggest transport challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. Transaid’s road safety work focuses on influencing safe driver behaviour with long term programmes in Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, responding to local needs for improved training for drivers and riders of trucks, buses, motorcycles and forklift trucks. On the access to health side, Transaid is working with local partners and communities to strengthen access to health services, primarily in rural areas. They are also working to strengthen health supply chains in collaboration with local partners and governments. Truck production at MAN restarts MAN has resumed truck production; it had been at a standstill for six weeks since mid-March due to supply shortfalls caused by the Ukraine war at MAN’s truck plants in Munich and Krakow.

MAN’s components plants in Nuremberg and Salzgitter are now also gradually ramping up their capacities again. The restart in Munich was attended by Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder. “The restart in our truck production is a very good signal for our workforce and our customers. However, there is no reason for euphoria yet. We will approach our usual production levels only step by step. “Production remains subject to major uncertainties. If the war shifts more strongly to western Ukraine again, we may be faced with a renewed standstill. Flexibility is and remains the order of the

day, as is strict cost discipline,”said MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp. The wiring harness suppliers in Ukraine that produce wiring harnesses for MAN are currently able to manufacture and deliver again, albeit at a low level. In addition, MAN is on schedule with the duplication of wiring harness production in other countries. Initially, however, MAN will have significantly fewer variants in its range and - with a high degree of uncertainty will ramp up step by step. MAN is systematically adhering to its restructuring program in connection with the Company’s transformation. Due to the reduced production program, the Company will have to continue to use the instrument of short-time working at its German sites.

John Martin RHA Policy Manager for Northern Ireland.

FOREIGN SECRETARY INDICATES MOVEMENT SOON ON NI PROTOCOL The RHA and McCulla Ireland Ltd recently met with the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to discuss workable solutions to the Northern Ireland Protocol.

who have experienced issues with the new trading arrangement can have an actual voice.

The Foreign Secretary indicated legislation will be tabled to Parliament within the next few weeks. She said close engagement with the RHA and other stakeholders would be necessary to ensure it was fit for purpose.

In addition to the issues resulting from the Protocol, Brexit has significantly affected “land bridge” journeys between NI and GB via Ireland return and Ireland to mainland EU via GB return which also needs further consideration.

The proposals include green and red lane solutions at ports in Northern Ireland. The green lanes will be for goods remaining in the UK with the claim it will be similar to moving goods between England and Scotland. The red lane will be those going to the EU and subject to full customs and SPS requirements. Additionally, the current Trader Support Service scheme could continue under the red lane proposal.

The Foreign Secretary also sought views from attendees on the new framework and whether it would address our concerns. The proposals are framed around the UK Command paper published last summer and if agreed, will largely address most of the concerns hauliers have in regard to the additional requirements.

Where the final destination is unknown, the green lane can be used, or alternatively the trader/ haulier can use the red lane and declare the goods through the full customs and SPS requirements. If goods are subsequently moved to the EU single market, they can be declared at that stage. Additionally raw materials and parts can be sourced to either EU or UK standards, subject to the products’ final market. It is also suggested an approved

32

EXPORT&FREIGHT

universal trusted trader scheme will be required for those businesses moving goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland only and anyone found to be operating illegally will be subject to investigation and potential removal from the scheme.

SEEKING VIEWS The Foreign Secretary also indicated the government wanted a negotiated settlement and probably needed a biosecurity agreement to underpin it.

We strongly support a negotiated settlement to the full range of issues currently being experienced as a consequence of the Protocol. However, whilst there are “many landing zones” it’s a “smooth runway” we are after. Any negotiated solution must have Northern Ireland front and centre and it’s not a matter of just “meeting in the middle” This is an issue that only the UK Government and the EU can solve and with the RHA having a direct line into Government hauliers

The RHA has been consistent in its lobbying since the Protocol was introduced in January 2021 and its fantastic to see others including politicians, the Government, the Commission and other key stakeholders now appear to agree with our initial stance. The Foreign Secretary’s team will now forward further information to the RHA and other stakeholders for a view on the new scheme. We additionally requested clarity on the positioning of SPS controls for entry into the UK through Ireland in the event of a contamination or disease issue within the EU.

Continental Offers Tyre Solutions for Sustainable Fleet Management Continental is helping transport companies and fleet operators to prepare their vehicles for the future by making fleets more sustainable, efficient and digitally connected. To this end, the technology company has a broad range of solutions and technologies that conserve resources and improve the carbon footprint of vehicles. Its focus is on four strategic areas: climate protection, clean mobility, circular economy and sustainable supply chains. “Efficiency and sustainability awareness have become vital competitive factors for transport companies too,” says Ralf Benack, Head of 360° Solutions at Continental. “Low-rolling resistance tyres already form part of the basic specification in many fleets. However, we are looking for more – namely, sustainability throughout a tyre’s life cycle.” At Continental, sustainability begins at the material sourcing phase and extends through the manufacturing process to the delivery and deployment of long-lasting, energy-efficient tyres. At the end of a tyre’s working life, Continental is able to provide tyre retreading and make use of raw materials obtained from the recycling of old tyres in the production of new rubber. The framework for this is provided by the Conti360° Solutions overall tyre management package –the selection of the right tyre, permanent monitoring of tyre data and a system to feed worn tyres back into the ContiLifeCycle programme, allowing tyres to enjoy a new life. Alongside the ContiFitment Service, which helps customers make the right choice of tyre for the application at hand, another key element of Continental’s fleet solutions is digital tyre monitoring with ContiConnect. Using sensors inside the tyres, ContiConnect enables fleet managers to access real-time tyre data, such as pressure and temperature, for the entire fleet. Tyre damage can be quickly detected, preventing punctures, and the tyres can be constantly kept at the optimum pressure, which can help to lower fuel consumption. Fleets reap the benefits of longer tyre service life and minimised real-life total costs for the vehicles.

Brigade’s Sidescan®Predict is the next generation of side-detection sensor system, designed for collision avoidance between vehicles, objects and vulnerable road users. Utilising ultrasonic technology, this intelligent system predicts if a collision is likely to occur and alerts the driver by a visual and/or audible warning, depending on the severity of the calculation.

Sidescan®Predict

Continental is set to make another step towards predictive maintenance with the introduction of ContiConnect 2.0 and its next-generation sensors, which will provide even more tyre data to fleet operators. “Sustainability and climate protection have been key issues for the transport industry for many years now,” remarks Benack. “We are always looking to help fleets precisely tackle these challenges with our solutions, to support them on the road towards sustainable fleet management. This is also why our unerring focus on sustainability has been enshrined in our ‘Vision 2030’ strategic programme.”

• Differentiates between stationary and moving objects • Data such as vehicle speed, wheel position and the speed and direction of a VRU feeds an algorithm to calculate the risk of a collision • System in constant operation below 20mph/32kmh, with or without the indicators activated • Detection area extends up to 2.5m from side of vehicle • Designed and developed by Brigade

NEXT GENERATION OF TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS PROFESSIONALS We already know that Northern Ireland’s haulage and logistics sector supports our regional and global supply chains and the sectors are vital for the NI economy. Brexit and Covid have highlighted the importance of supply-chains and their associated workers over the past two years. As we are witnessing with the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver shortage, labour issues in this sector affect the stability of the entire economy. As we emerge from the pandemic the NI economy is growing and businesses are seeking more skilled and semi-skilled employees than ever before. The labour pool has not kept up with this growing demand, and this is supported by The Department for Economy’s December 2021 Labour Market figures report, which states “The number of employees receiving pay through HMRC PAYE was 773,400, the highest on record.” Many sectors of the economy face recruitment challenges and some must also grapple with a demographic challenge as the workforce ages. For logistics businesses, this is exacerbated by the fragmented nature of the sector and the lack of awareness of the range of careers available within logistics. For a number of years, some parts of the sector have struggled to attract new recruits and retain those working in it, relying on agency staff and foreign labour to manage periods of high stress. The reasons are diverse and include perceived lack of career development opportunities and lack of diversity. To improve resilience of the supply chain, we must improve the labour market for the sector. The freight industry is made up of workers from many different sub sectors. From the crew of container ships and the port workers who load and offload containers, pilots flying cargo in commercial flights and the cargo handlers on the ground that send goods on their way, to the HGV drivers, van drivers and train drivers who get goods to their final destination. There are many more essential jobs in between and the workforce and skills requirements are diverse. It is important that these businesses not only consider challenges of the current workforce, but that they look ahead to the next generation

36

EXPORT&FREIGHT

of logistics workers, ensuring commercial longevity and the ongoing integrity of the supply chain. There are currently trends of an ageing workforce and a strong male bias within the logistics sector, not only on the frontline with drivers but across all roles and levels. Businesses must continue to work on this challenge as well as to attract more participation from a wider range of diverse groups. How can you do this? Through the Transport and Supply Chain Management Foundation Degree at South West College. The programme validated by The Open University and supported by CILT provides applicants with a core knowledge and the higher technical skills in Transport and focuses on the practical application of knowledge and skills in both the academic and Work Based Learning components of the programme allowing students to ‘earn while they learn’. A universal approach to the course coupled with opportunities to work with students from other Higher Education programmes will enable participants to gain an appreciation of the importance of a team approach in the modern and vibrant Transport sector. This multi-disciplinary approach is critical to ensure the successful and timely delivery of Transport and Supply Chain Management projects and the next generation of professionals. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Transport & Supply Chain Management programme, graduates may consider entering into employment within the Transport and Supply Chain sector or continuing to study by applying for a place on a BSc programme in a relevant discipline including the level 6 BSc (Hons) Top-Up Degree in Transport and Supply Chain Management at South West College.

Even before COVID-19 rocked global supply chains, the transportation and logistics industry was undergoing massive change. Factor in the profound impact of the pandemic, and the changes to operational supply chain flows related to Brexit our industry has gotten even more complex. The sectors knowledgeable professionals have been essential to preventing our supply chain breakdowns while navigating the way forward. Because transportation and logistics keeps the world moving (literally), employees with knowledge and skills in this area are not only highly sought-after but well compensated for their expertise. Degrees, in particular, can position graduates for executive-level jobs as well as academic ones. For students looking for fascinating and challenging careers, there may be no more opportune time than now to pursue studies in transportation and logistics. The importance of education and training that Northern Ireland’s logistics and transport practitioners receive cannot be exaggerated, as it impacts directly on the efficient management of the supply chain in which they are an essential element. Within their own industry, logistics and transport practitioners are now required to take a wider strategic view rather than the previously acceptable narrow operational view. This increased role and status requires substantially different and enhanced skills, education and training. Making the foundation degree at South West College the perfect opportunity to upskill your staff, recruitment opportunities and employment pathways for the next generation. ELECTRIC TRUCKS

THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC TRANSPORT Diesel may not be dead, but one thing is for sure: electrification is the future, with all of our leading truck and van manufacturers well on the road to meeting their obligations of net zero emissions by 2050. As the transport sector is one of the UK’s largest emitters of CO2 and a major source of air pollution in cities, we all have a responsibility to address the issue of decarbonising transport, and indeed definite steps are being taken in this regard. It has been said that a new electric vehicle is registered every nine minutes in the UK, and that there are now more electric vehicle charging points than petrol stations, so that is progress, and more is being done.

There are plans, for example, to invest £20 million in a new public electric vehicle charging network in over 350 locations across Northern Ireland, with the aim of having 1,500 new charging points before the end of 2024, including at six major ultra-rapid charging hub sites that will see drivers able to fully ‘top-up’ their vehicles in less than 20 minutes. This investment will help address the lack of charging infrastructure in Northern Ireland, a fact recently highlighted by the

Infrastructure Minister who is setting up an EV Task force to seek to address the issue, a move welcomed by commercial vehicle operators who are already well on the way to making electric vehicles an integral part of their business. But they are shopping around for the best possible and financially viable deals and over the next few pages Export & Freight highlights some of the vehicles that are currently available or will be in the near future…

£20M ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE NETWORK PLANNED FOR NORTHERN IRELAND Belfast-based start-up Weev has announced plans to invest £20 million in a new public electric vehicle (EV) charging network in over 350 locations across Northern Ireland. now thinking seriously about the switch to an EV, but they need to make that switch knowing that their charging requirements will be met should they need it on any given journey.

In total, the company plans to install 1,500 new charging points before the end of 2024, including at six major ultra-rapid charging hub sites that will see drivers able to fully ‘top-up’ their vehicles in less than 20 minutes. This investment will help address the paucity of charging infrastructure in Northern Ireland. This lack of infrastructure was highlighted by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon setting up an EV Task force to seek to address the lack of commercial operators in the space. Charging points will be available in convenient and strategic locations such as car parks. Weev will also offer EV managed fleet solutions and leasing. Co-founded by Thomas O’Hagan, who also co-founded IT and telecoms company b4b Group, Weev’s management team are no strangers to the business sector having been in charge of various successful renewable infrastructure and major commercial businesses based in Northern Ireland.

The board will be chaired by David Gavaghan with Brian Loughran joining as Director. Speaking on the announcement,

Thomas O’Hagan said: “We’re delighted to have pulled together such a strong team of experienced people to help us deliver our plan of rolling out an EV charging network for EV drivers in Northern Ireland that is fit for purpose, maintained, and supported locally. “With the current situation around fuel prices, consumers are

Welcoming the investment in this vital infrastructure, Mark McCall from Electric Vehicle Association Northern Ireland (EVANI) added: “We have been lobbying to create an environment that was investible for commercial operators to bring new public charging infrastructure to Northern Ireland. We are delighted that Weev has stepped forward to help make this happen. “EV drivers in Northern Ireland have been crying out for action and we are really looking forward to seeing the progress the company makes with its planned roll out.”

VOLVO TRUCKS LEADING THE CHARGE With the whole transport industry facing tough demands to improve its climate impact, Volvo Trucks has made clear its objective for its entire product range to be fossil-free by 2040.While it may sound a tall order to hit that ambitious target, Volvo’s comprehensive electric offering is already playing a key role in speeding up the transition away from diesel. Back in November 2020, DHL put the first purpose-built fully electric 16-tonne vehicle on the road in the UK. The Volvo FL Electric 4x2 is being used for final mile deliveries in the West End of London, and its performance over the course of the past 18 months has been a key factor behind the global logistics giant signing a new agreement with Volvo Trucks, pledging to deploy a total of 44 new electric trucks across Europe. While the smaller Volvo FE & FL Electrics will make up the bulk of the order – being deployed for local work on urban routes –four Volvo FM Electric trucks for regional distribution across the UK are also included. And DHL isn’t the only operator pressing ahead with a carbon-free future. Far

from it. Blackpool-based Fox Group will become the first tipper operator in the UK to begin the transition from diesel to electric, with two Volvo FE Electric 6x2 tippers due on the road imminently. Paul Fox, Managing Director of familyrun Fox Group, says: “Placing this order marks the start of the electrification of our fleet. We understand we are the first company in the UK to invest in electric tippers – and one of the first in Europe. “We are strongly committed to playing our part in the UK’s push to reach net zero and we will be making more of our fleet electric in the future. This milestone is just the beginning of the journey, and we believe if the country is serious about

substantially reducing carbon emissions, the construction sector needs to join the party – and we are proud to be playing our part and leading from the front.” The FL Electric and FE Electric have been in serial production since 2019, while manufacturing of the FH, FM and FMX Electric models begins in September this year. And with order books now open, operators have extended options to make their fleets cleaner and quieterfor both urban and inter-city applications. No wonder then more and more businesses are starting to see that battery-powered solutions are no longer a pipedream, but in fact a real and viable option. With the addition of the new products with higher load capacities, more powerful drivelines and a range of up to 300 km, Volvo Trucks’ electric portfolio can now cover around 45 per cent of all goods transported in Europe today.

transports in Europe, and also in other parts of the world, in the very near future,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. “To prove this, we have set the ambitious goal to have electric trucks account for at least half of our sales in Europe by 2030. And these three new heavy-duty electric trucks mark a giant step towards reaching this target.” In addition to the electric vehicles, Volvo Trucks’ electrification programme includes a complete eco-system with numerous service, maintenance and financing solutions, as well as other options that can help facilitate an easier and faster transition to electrified traffic. The holistic setup helps customers stay productive and in control of their new electric transport fleet. “These complete electrified transport

solutions that we, along with our global network of dealers and service workshops can provide, will play a vital role in ensuring our customers’ success,” adds Alm. Looking further ahead, even longdistance heavy transport will be able to be completed with electric vehicles. To meet these challenging demands for both high load capacity and a much longer range, Volvo Trucks plans to use hydrogen fuel cells to generate the electricity. “This technology is developing rapidly and our ambition is also to make the long driving distances electrified, using both batteries and fuel cells,” Alm says.“Our aim is to start selling fuel-cell electric trucks in the second part of this decade and we are confident we can make this happen.”

BATTERY ELECTRIC TRUCK TRIAL HITS THE ROAD In what is one of the largest and most significant deployments of zero emission trucks in the UK to date, 20 DAF LF Electric vehicles are entering service with a range of public bodies including the National Health Service (NHS) and Local Authorities, as part of the Battery Electric Truck Trial (BETT) funded by Department for Transport (DfT). The trucks are now entering day-to-day operations while at the same time gathering real-time data; the results from which will be used in an interactive website to inform future fleet operator buying decisions and help stimulate the sale of battery electric trucks. With the Government having set ambitious targets to end the sale of non-zero emission heavy goods vehicles from 2035 (for vehicles of 26-tonne GVW and below, and 2040 for heavier vehicles) the BETT is expected to make a significant and positive impact upon the move to zero emission vehicles. One of the key operators partnering the BETT is NHS Supply Chain who, supported by Prohire Ltd. in the provision of financing and maintenance services as part of the arrangements, are due to deploy eight DAF LF Electric rigids with refrigerated bodies at several of its locations around the country. Five vehicles are also destined for local NHS Trusts. The remaining seven are earmarked for service with two Local Authority Framework Organisations in school supply operations and Local Councils for use in recycling and general logistic uses. Bodywork includes PACCAR box bodies designed and manufactured by DAF Trucks, and also temperature-controlled bodies supplied by Gray & Adams. All the vehicles in the trial feature the distinctive Battery Electric Truck Trial logo. The BETT is valued at £10 million and focuses on an end-to-end solution, covering vehicles, charging infrastructure, user training, repair and maintenance and total-cost-of- ownership, providing operational insight across a variety of

duty cycles. It is part of the Government’s wider £20 million zero emission road freight trials and is delivered using the SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative); a process bringing together government challenges and ideas from business to create innovative solutions. Lancashirebased Leyland Trucks – where the LF Electric is manufactured – is working with CENEX, the low carbon research and consultancy organisation, to create the interactive BETT report and website. Transport Minister, Trudy Harrison, said, “Demonstrating the high performance of battery electric technology in demanding, real world environments is critical to ensuring confidence continues to build within the industry around the future of zero emission trucks. “I’m excited to see more British built green trucks take to our roads with the support of the Government’s £20m zero emission road freight trials. This demonstration will help us understand the full benefits of this new technology as we power up the electric revolution across the UK and boost green jobs in our towns and villages.”

RECHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE Also key to the BETT will be a thorough analysis of vehicle charging. The project will use 14 PACCAR battery-charging units stationed at 13 operator locations, with capacities ranging from 22kW to 180kW to suit differing operational needs and to provide a broad range of data.

DRIVER TRAINING DAF Academy Driver Training has been provided for drivers of the BETT LF Electric vehicles with locally based DAF Dealer Trainers also

being familiarised to provide on-going ad-hoc driver support as required during the trial.

SERVICE BACK-UP The BETT vehicles are being maintained and supported through the DAF Dealer Network, specifically at seven locations, each with two dedicated DAF Technicians benefitting from IMI Level 3 maintenance qualifications and specific LF Electric product awareness training. DAF Trucks has already commenced the roll-out of dedicated electric vehicle training, with 36 individuals within the DAF Dealer network having achieved IMI Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications.

BUILT IN BRITAIN Leyland Trucks manufactures the successful DAF LF series of distribution vehicles, including the LF Electric which recently entered production at its state-of-the-art plant in Lancashire. The company also produces the latest International Truck of the Year DAF XF, XG and XG+ vehicle ranges in right-hand-drive format. “This is a significant step in the project as we roll-out vehicles for real-time operations,” said Rob Lawton, Principal Engineer – Alternative Powertrains, at Leyland Trucks, “we’re working closely with our project partners in order to collect the most accurate data possible. Electrification is becoming a major consideration for operators,” he said, “and it’s crucial they’re able to scrutinise reliable evidence before investing in this relatively new technology. We’re also very proud to be part of this project and having been given the opportunity to showcase our engineering and technological expertise.” DAF Trucks is among the first truck manufacturers to already have full electric trucks for sale in the UK market, including the 19-tonne DAF LF Electric and the larger DAF CF Electric in 4x2 tractor and 6x2 rigid variant, perfectly suited for general distribution, as well as supermarket delivery and waste collection applications.

THE ROAD AHEAD FOR ZERO-EMISSION HGVS Here, James Venables – eConsultancy Manager at Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK – shares his views on the technology that will be powering the UK’s trucks in future. Will it be electricity from an on-board battery, or charge from a hydrogen fuel-cell that powers the trucks of tomorrow? That’s the question which currently unites the truck industry, the energy sector and politicians across the UK and Europe. One thing is clear – we cannot let our customers down, because to do so would be to let the public down. Operators rely on truck manufacturers for the trucks that move the world, delivering goods, collecting rubbish and supplying construction materials. Fortunately, we have 125 years’ experience, having sold the first Daimler truck in London in 1896. That vehicle was designed to operate on as many as three fuels: gasoline, coal gas and lamp fuel. Operators today face similar choices; while the vast majority of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) sold in the UK run on diesel, some use biofuels such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and Gas-To-Liquid to decarbonise their operation. A growing handful operate batteryelectric trucks – the world’s first series-produced 7.5-tonne truck, the FUSO eCanter, has been in operation in London since 2018. Part of the global Daimler Truck family, Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK supports a dual-track decarbonisation strategy. We’re one

of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, and we’re committed to the Paris Climate Agreement. Our ambition - to offer only new vehicles that are carbon-neutral in driving operation by 2039 – has been matched by the UK Government, which plans for all new HGVs to be zero-emission by 2040.

KEY AREAS To successfully decarbonise Britain’s fleet of HGVs requires not only an understanding of the different use cases of trucks, but success in three key areas. When choosing their vehicles, an operator makes a rational purchasing decision factoring in the total cost of ownership and the environmental impact of their vehicles. To support the growth of batteryelectric trucks, the Department for Transport offers the Plug-in Truck Grant. At the time of writing, the grant is worth £16,000 for an operator’s first 10 eligible trucks below 12t, and £25,000 for its first five eligible trucks above 12t. The second part of the equation is product availability. We plan to electrify our entire portfolio with both battery-electric and hydrogen-based trucks. Why? Simple because of the diverse applications and tasks that trucks and their operators face. Hydrogenbased drives can be the better

solution for flexible and demanding applications in heavy-duty transport and long-haul applications, whereas battery electric trucks are better suited to lighter loads and shorter, predictable routes. Our work has already begun. Since 2018, operators have covered several million miles in our battery electric FUSO eCanter light-duty trucks around the world, and following extensive testing, the first production Mercedes-Benz eActros trucks are now arriving in the UK. The low-entry MercedesBenz eEconic will follow later this year, and the battery-electric eActros Long Haul arrives in 2024. On the hydrogen side, the fuelcell Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck prototype has been undergoing intensive testing since last year – both on our in-house test track and on public roads – and our goal is to launch the series production truck in 2027. The third and final part of the transition to zero-emission trucks is infrastructure. Operators in 1896 chose gasoline as it was readily available from a chemist. Today’s operators may fill up with diesel at the services on the road, or they may have bunkers at their depots. Either way, the availability of a corresponding infrastructure is decisive for a successful conversion to zero-emission technologies.

CHARGING CHALLENGES We foresee three different charging scenarios for battery electric truck operators: depot, opportunity, and public hub, depending on the use case. Urban distribution operations are well suited to depot charging, and our eConsulting team recommend charging partners. Long-haul operations carrying heavier cargo will need roadside charging, and the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders estimates there will need to be 2,450 roadside eTruck recharging stations by 2025, and 8,200 by 2030. A joint investment of €500 million by Daimler Truck, TRATON Group and Volvo Group will install at least 1,700 high-power chargers across Europe and the UK over the next five years, enabling truckers to recharge whilst taking their 45-minute mandatory rest period. When it comes to hydrogen infrastructure, we’ve also signed a memorandum of understanding with BP to roll-out up to 25 hydrogen refuelling stations across the UK by 2030, each supplied by green hydrogen. As you can see, collaboration is key. Only with the enormous tailwind of numerous partners from industry and politics will we successfully transition to zero-emission trucks. But we’re determined to keep the world moving and clean up the air that we all breathe.

VOLTA TRUCKS REVEALS ITS FULL-ELECTRIC 7.5- & 12-TONNE VOLTA ZERO VARIANTS Volta Trucks has revealed the forthcoming 7.5- and 12-tonne Volta Zero variants - the second product family in its full-electric vehicle range. They have been designed by Volta Trucks’ partner, Astheimer Design in Warwick, UK, alongside Volta Trucks’ own engineering teams. The new full-electric vehicles bear a close but evolutionary visual relationship to the larger 16-tonne vehicle which is now undergoing extensive engineering development and testing ahead of customer evaluation during 2022.

the use of rear-view cameras that replace traditional mirrors, a 360-degree birds-eye camera showing the driver their complete surroundings, and blind-sport warning systems that detect objects down the sides of the vehicle.

The 7.5- and 12-tonne vehicles will be visually identical at the front, with the 12-tonne vehicle having a longer chassis and body, and second set of rear wheels and tyres, to accommodate the increased vehicle payload.

Without the legacy internal combustion engine, the driver of a Volta Zero sits far lower than in a conventional truck, with their eye-line at around 1.8 meters. This mirrors the height of pedestrians and other road users nearby for easy visual communication. And thanks to the Volta Zero’s innovative central driving position, the driver can enter and exit the vehicle on either side, always onto the pavements for their own safety, and through sliding rather than swinging doors to also ensure the safety of passing cyclists

The 7.5-and 12-tonne models carry over the principles of the innovative cab and premium working environment for drivers. The vehicle’s ground-up design, without the traditional internal combustion engine, has enabled designers and engineers to completely rethink truck design in this segment.

DIRECT VISION The driver of a Volta Zero has a wide 220-degrees of direct vision around the vehicle. This panoramic view of the surroundings through a glasshouse-style cab is designed to deliver a Transport for London five-star Direct Vision Standard rating for optimum visibility and the reduction of blind spots. The protection of vulnerable road users is also enhanced by

The new 7.5- and 12-tonne Volta Zero will also change the experience and workspace for drivers. With near-silent operations and minimised cognitive overload, thanks to a intuitive dashboard and interfaces, the driving experience is more akin to a premium car than today’s traditional commercial vehicle.

PILOT FLEET The ground-up development of the 7.5- and 12-tonne vehicles is being delivered at the

same industry-leading pace as other vehicle developments. Having confirmed the start of the project in December 2021, a Pilot Fleet of vehicles is expected to be launched for customer trials in 2024, with series production due to commence in early 2025. The forthcoming 7.5- and 12-tonne vehicles will make a significant contribution to the company’s objective to sell over 27,000 per year by 2025 and increasing in the years beyond. Revealing the new 7.5- and 12-tonne vehicle range, Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, said: “The forthcoming 7.5- and 12-tonne models complete the full-electric Volta Zero product family. They’ll sit alongside our 16-tonne vehicle, that’s currently engaged in extensive testing ahead of the first customer use later this year, and the 18-tonne vehicle that will start production in mid-2023. “Our customers tell us that they really appreciate the safety and zero-emission attributes of the 16-tonne Volta Zero, but also need smaller 7.5- and 12-tonne vehicles in their operations. Our engineering teams are now scaling rapidly to be able to deliver all four vehicles at pace, as our customers ask of us.”

including waste, recycling and specialist services. We also offer our Renault Trucks E-Tech D at 26T with a low entry cab.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP For customers looking to make the switch to electric, our approach is to work collaboratively with operators and introduce third-party expert partners at appropriate stages. At every Renault Trucks dealer across the UK, customers are supported throughout their entire journey to switch to electric by our fully trained Energy Transitions Specialists (ETS). Following discussions with operators around their decarbonisation ambitions,

we work to understand their operation, exploring which parts could be performed with an electric vehicle. We specify a vehicle to suit the application and then introduce charging partners who will assess the energy available on site for charging the first, and hopefully subsequent electric vehicles. After this assessment we will recommend charging solutions which reflect the immediate and ongoing operational needs of the customer. Where customers need first-hand experience of the technology our wide-ranging electric vehicle demonstrator fleet is available for customer trial across various applications. We are also working in partnership with a number of bodybuilders to

INTRODUCING THE NEW RENAULT TRUCKS E-TECH MASTER OPTIMODALE Renault Trucks has launched an industry-first multimodal last mile e-mobility concept, the Renault Trucks E-Tech Master OptiModale, for cleaner, greener and more accessible urban deliveries. Designed and commissioned by Renault Trucks to help reduce congestion and improve air quality in urban areas, the unique E-Tech Master OptiModale combines three types of electric transportation in one vehicle: a 3.5 tonne LWB L3H1 E-Tech Master van with Low Loader Luton body by Horton Commercials; an eBullitt electric Cargo bike; and parcel-carrying drone from UVATEK. Suitable for a wide range of logistics operations as well as medical applications, the E-Tech OptiModale is designed to carry and deliver parcels of various sizes. Its specially commissioned Low Loader Luton body holds the parcels and acts as the ‘Mothership’ for the eCargo bike and drone helipad system. Grahame Neagus, Head of LCV at Renault Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “The all-new Renault Trucks E-Tech Master OptiModale addresses the pressing need to improve air quality and pollution in our cities while improving accessibility and productivity for operators. By harnessing multiple modes of electric transport, this is an all-in-one sustainable solution that is set to transform the rapidly growing parcel market,

54

and can be replicated anywhere in the world.” Grahame Neagus continues: “The E-Tech Master OptiModale is a two-person operation, offering the flexibility of delivering larger parcels by van, whilst the second team member takes the eBullitt cargo bike for last mile deliveries where congestion is at its worst. Additionally, the drone provides rapid deployment for urgent situations, such as delivering vital drugs or supplies to challenging or inaccessible locations. Optimodale delivers an innovative “last mile” solution and is a clear illustration of the breadth and depth of our thinking, providing Renault Trucks logistics customers with a sustainable solution from 2kg all the way up to 44 tonne.”

VEHICLE SPECIFICATION Based on a Renault Trucks E-Tech Master Platform Cab chassis with the R75 electric motor and a 33kWh battery, (also available with the new 52kWh battery for even greater range), the 3.5 tonne LWB L3H1 platform cab is ideal for combining both range and payload for this type of operation. Offering a typical range of around 80 miles before requiring

charge, this vehicle is ideal for back-to-base operations that are located on the edge of major conurbations where entering the inner town or city requires zero emission vehicles. A specially commissioned 4100mm Low Loader Luton body by Horton Commercials is fully equipped for parcel delivery with folding shelving, with electric cargo bike store to the nearside complete with bike lift, and heli-drone pad system. The latest generation eBullitt electric cargo bike, capable of carrying up to 100kgs of smaller parcels, is finished in a Renault Trucks Red frame with corresponding white cargo box. It is equipped with the latest Shimano e-system that can provide up to 50km of power assist for the cyclist and once back on board the E-Tech Master OptiModale, the battery can be removed and charged within 1 hour to 50%, 2 hours to 80% and 4 hours 100%. Above the eCargo bike location is the retractable heli-drone pad from which the latest generation parcel carrying drone from UVATEK can be launched, carrying high value loads up to 2 kgs in weight. Although flying drones is currently restricted in certain areas, its speed and accuracy is ideal for urgent time sensitive deliveries, for example, over countryside or across water.

2022 COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW HAILED A RESOUNDING SUCCESS The 2022 Commercial Vehicle Show has been hailed a resounding success, with over 230 exhibitors spanning the road transport sector together with compelling speaker sessions and thousands of visitors during the three day event in May.

attendance and participation than ever before. Many presentations were standing room only as visitors gathered to find out more.

Demonstrating the confidence companies have in the event, numerous exhibitors chose the Show as the place to launch their new product lines, including Harris Maxus LCVs, TruTac fleet compliance and Locks4Vans next-generation security. This helped to deliver a larger event in 2022 with strong visitor numbers making it an unmissable show for everyone involved in the commercial vehicle industry.

Visitor numbers of over 11,100 reinforced the Commercial Vehicle Show’s position as the UK’s biggest and best road transport event, providing a unique combination of innovations, services and solutions across the industry.

Ford’s stand was perpetually busy. Mandy Dean, Director, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Britain and Ireland, said, “The Show was absolutely phenomenal for us. From Day One, huge visitor numbers have come to the stand to learn all about our new products and services. Footfall was great, quality of conversations with fleet managers, all sorts of industries – it’s been fantastic. We always use the Show to invite our existing customers, but we’ve met lots of new people as well. The stand was mobbed and was like that all three days.” The 2022 Show was Harris Maxus’ biggest ever display and General Manager Mark Barrett

56

was delighted, ‘Throughout the Show there was a fantastic buzz around our stand,’ Barrett said. ‘Showcasing no fewer than 12 electric vehicles the Maxus line-up included our two newest entrants to the UK market, the Maxus MIFA 9 MPV and T90EV pick-up truck, which were unveiled on press day amid much fanfare. In addition to meeting hundreds of visitors during the Show, we were doing business; generating not just leads, but securing sales right across our range’

TVL Security announced an initiative designed to support van drivers when they are victims of theft and supported by the police nationwide. Laura Moran, Managing Director of TVL Group says, “We have had a really successful CV Show this year and it’s great to see more and more people attending. We have had great engagement on our Ford Factory Fit Security options and it has been the perfect opportunity to launch the ‘Tell TVL’ initiative which has been received so positively. We’ll definitely be back next year.”

Tooling supplier, Sykes Pickavant brought its new 1500kg pneumatic EV battery lifting table with its unique patented locking system. David Noon, National Sales Manager for Skyes Pickavant said, “In the 12 years of doing this Show, I’ve never had a reaction to a single product like I have with this one. The Show has had great footfall with the right calibre of customer. It’s been fantastic, with a high quality of the leads to follow up after the Show. We’ve had people from all over the UK coming to the Show specifically to find this product.”

Expert speakers on the Show’s two Theatres tackled some of the most challenging topics currently facing the industry. The Road Ahead Theatre in Hall 5 and the Workshop Theatre in Hall 4, delivered in association with Commercial Vehicle Workshop magazine, provided a professional forum to address topics such as: ‘Driver facilities; a right, not a privilege’, ‘What to consider when electrifying your fleet’ and ‘Using DVSA data to improve compliance’, among others. These presentation and panel discussions proved a resounding success with greater audience

Murray Ellis, Show Director, says, ‘This year’s Commercial Vehicle Show did not disappoint, with a great atmosphere across all three days and positive feedback from exhibitors. After two tough years, the Commercial Vehicle Show has proven it remains the place to get business done. ‘We’d like to thank all our exhibitors, both new and returning, for providing so many outstanding products and services, which resonated with the thousands of visitors who attended. We now start planning what will be an even better 2023 event, enhancing its reputation as the pre-eminent UK Commercial Vehicle Show.’ The 2023 Commercial Vehicle Show dates have been confirmed. Next year’s Show will take place at the NEC, Birmingham from 18 - 20 April 2023.

FORD PARTNERS WITH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TO LAUNCH SUICIDE PREVENTION CAMPAIGN As revealed at the CV Show, Ford has teamed up with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to “Make it Visible” - a new highvisibility campaign using higher-viz safety vests to grab attention and point people in the direction of help when needed. The UK’s commercial vehicle leader is stepping in to help combat the issue, with as many as two construction workers lost to suicide every day, according to the Office for National Statistics. Despite extensive physical safety measures taken to protect on-site workers, construction workers in the UK and Ireland are taking their own lives, unaware of the help and support available. Working with the Lighthouse Club, and construction contractors Balfour Beatty, Ford seeks to actively promote wellbeing awareness amongst its van customers. With Ford accounting for almost one in three new commercial vehicles sold throughout 2021 – and higher into the construction industry - putting mental safety on an equal footing with physical safety on building sites is an important step for this group of customers. By helping to make the support more visible, more workers will be able to seek assistance from available resources. “This campaign is hugely important to Ford and highlights the importance of mental wellbeing alongside physical wellbeing on the construction

site”, said Mandy Dean, director, commercial vehicles, Ford of Britain and Ireland. “As the UK’s best-selling commercial vehicle brand,it is likely the majority of construction workers are also Ford customers and operators, so we feel we have a duty to support them, through this partnership with the Lighthouse Club, raising awareness and getting support to those in need of it.” The “Make it Visible” campaign follows on from Ford’s “Elephant in the Transit” launch from 2018, building awareness of male suicide and promoting the front seats of a vehicle as a safe space to talk. This latest initiative sets out to provide counsellors a means to get to construction sites, with onsite posters matching the vest’s colours. These posters will direct workers to a safe place to talk off-site, so more can seek help easily. Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Ford to deliver the “Make it Visible” campaign. These highly distinguishable vans will be visiting sites across the country to deliver visible support to the

boots on the ground workforce. The vehicles are manned by the Lighthouse Club’s on-site team who are all Mental Health First Aiders with relatable experiences in the construction industry. I am convinced that this initiative will have a positive impact on workforce wellbeing and ultimately save lives.” The “Make it Visible” campaign kicked off at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, supported by a fully liveried Transit Custom in matching high-visibility tones. In attendance on the Ford stand for launch day were construction contractors, Balfour Beatty, a key supporter of the initiative, who were involved in piloting the scheme on one of their sites in London. Heather Bryant, Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability Director at Balfour Beatty, said: “For too long, the construction and infrastructure industry has treated mental health as the poor cousin of physical health. We must change this incredibly outdated perception – and at Balfour Beatty, we are continuing to lead the charge. “The “Make it Visible” campaign helps to build on the work we have done with the charity Mates in Mind, by specifically helping us to reach those, including our valued supply chain partners, who may not be aware of the resources available to them whilst also providing a dedicated, safe space to talk.”

DRIVER TRAINING

John Martin is pictured here with two of the Manfreight successful candidates (l-r) Anne Murray - Fleet Administrator and LGV driver, Stephen Heasley Manfreight Driver Programme Manager, Adam Tinsley Transport Planner and LGV driver.

MANFREIGHT DELIVERS FOR LOGISTICS THROUGH AN INHOUSE DRIVER TRAINING PROGRAMME John Martin, the RHA’s Policy Manager for NI, called with RHA member the Manfreight team recently to congratulate them on the success on their driver training programme. Manfreight, established in 1973, is a leading privately owned logistics company based in Craigavon; it’s a progressive company providing a range of logistics solutions for the Irish, UK and European markets.

since he took up the reins in 2010. His extensive experience in the transport industry gained over 20 years has stood him in good stead, having worked in various managerial positions for several high-profile logistics operators.

The key to the success of Manfreight’s operating model within the FMCG sector is speed to market combined with scalability and highly bespoke levels of service provided by a highly trained and motivated team.

They currently operate a fleet of over 200 HGVs and more than 350 trailers, providing logistics solutions for a wide range of customers throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe and employ over 450 staff of which 350 are drivers.

The company’s roots stretch back more than four decades. It was founded by the late Chris Slowey, initially to serve the agricultural sector, hauling fertilizer and fuel products, before expanding into the transportation of construction materials. Today, Manfreight is managed by the founder’s son, also named Chris, who has driven the company into new areas of business throughout the UK and Ireland

62

EXPORT&FREIGHT

Given the high dependence on drivers to “drive” the business forward Manfreight realised they needed to become more “inwardly focused” to continue to “deliver” in a sustainable way within the logistics sector. This led them to establish an internal Driver Training programme headed up by Stephen Heasley. Since the programme was initiated, the company has successfully trained over 75 candidates in Category C, Category C+E and

Module 4 CPC tests. This statistic is even more impressive when you consider the Driver & Vehicle Agency had suspended LGV driving tests due to Covid for extended periods over the last 2 years. As part of their Environment, Social & Governance Policy, Manfreight offer staff the opportunity to upskill and role change role within the company to provide more job satisfaction and develop staff to aid staff retention. The Driver Training Programme is one such example of this initiative – by allowing existing workshop technicians, wash operatives and office staff to widen their skill set, as well as giving them a better understanding of what drivers face in the role on a daily basis. The success of the programme is proven by the multitude of successful candidates now working as full or part time drivers for the company as well as the healthy backlog of those wishing to take the test.

Clare Maxwell, one of the successful candidates, decided on a career change after over 12 years with a leading ferry company in Belfast. Clare now drives for Manfreight full-time and is loving the new challenge. Anne Murray, Fleet Administrator stated, “Doing my training for the class 1 helped to give me a much more in-depth understanding of my role as a Fleet Administrator.” Stephen Heasley, Fleet Manager & Head of the Driver Training Team, added: “It’s great to see people make progress and move on in their career. I have trained admin staff, planners, wash operatives and mechanics. It is the hardest road test you can do, at 16.5m long, our vehicles are the longest you can do the test in. “With over 75 LGV passes under my belt and a 100% pass rate of which 15 of the candidates had absolutely no HGV experience I’m extremely pleased with the team’s performance.”

Clarksons Port Services appoints business development manager in response to demand Customs clearance solutions specialists Clarksons Port Services (CPS) has appointed Graham Cross as business development manager in a newly-created role as its Customs and Freight team continues to grow. Following more than 40 years within the freight forwarding and logistics industry, working for both large and small organisations, Graham set up his own business in December 2002, starting as a sole trader with the goal and belief in providing an enhanced customer experience within freight and logistics. In 2016, Hull born and bred Graham became involved in securing a warehouse and distribution facility, close to the port which provided storage for clients primarily involved with the importing of goods from around the world, prior to despatch to the end users in the UK and Europe. In addition to this service, the company developed a pick and pack operation, catering for the supply of PPE, chemicals and retail products, both locally and nationally. Of the new role, Graham said: “CPS is at an interesting point in its development and I’m excited to

have been given the opportunity to not only be a part of its growth, but also have an impact and influence in that strategy. The role fits within the industry that I know but brings a specific focus around customs and freight, which is a different challenge and one that I look forward to undertaking.” Looking ahead at how the landscape may change in the next 12 months, Graham said: “The industry has always been resilient and adapted to the changes imposed upon it. The current challenges provide the industry, and CPS in particular, with the opportunity to seize the moment and enhance the customer experience along with introducing new clients into the business.” Boasting over 20 team members in its customs offering, CPS is continuing to recruit and grow to ensure a personal interface with its clients and a positive personal interaction with authorities

continues. It attributes this to its success in handling all types of customs documentation and offering an increasing number of processes required for having goods cross UK borders successfully and without delay. Mark Ewings, director at Clarksons Port Services said: “As the demand in the industry for trustworthy and competent customs brokers becomes ever more important with the shifting sands in regulations, we felt that Graham would be in an excellent position to get our message out there in order to assist all businesses in the UK deal with their customs processes for importing and exporting. “Graham’s vast experience and longevity in the industry, coupled with our very experienced staff and new additions to the team will bring a new dynamic to Clarksons’ offering in the field. FORD E-TRANSIT: FIRST MODELS ROLL OFF PRODUCTION LINE Ford is now shipping the first production units of its all electric E Transit van to customers across Europe from the Ford Otosan factory in Kocaeli, Turkey, as Export & Freight’s Phil Eaglestone learned on a recent Press trip to Barcelona in Spain to find out more about Ford’s PRO programme. This landmark moment was celebrated at the Gölcük plant, in a ceremony involving Turkish government representatives, investors, employees and media. Following strong early demand for E-Transit from European businesses– with over 5,000 customer orders received before vehicles roll off the assembly line – Ford Otosan is now moving to full production volume. “Ford Otosan’s Kocaeli plant is the heart of Transit production in Europe, and this celebration of E-Transit manufacturing starts the electrified next chapter in our already strong partnership,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe. “This is the first step in a transformation of the Kocaelisite which will see it become a major centre for electric commercial vehicle manufacturing in Europe.” E-Transit is the all-electric version of the world’s best-selling cargo van and the new vehicle spearheads the launch of Ford Pro in the region; this new business offers customers a suite of software, charging, servicing and financing solutions with class-leading vehicles to help improve productivity and uptime, lower costs, and facilitate access to everything operators need on one platform built for the electric and digital age.

“Production of E-Transit in our Kocaeli plant, where the electricity is supplied with 100% renewable energy, is a source of pride for us and another turning point in our increasing role in Ford’s electrification strategy” said Güven Özyurt, general manager, Ford Otosan. “We believe that electrification of the legendary Transit model is a major development and an important step for making Ford Otosan the production base of Ford electrified commercial vehicles.” To meet demand for future electrified Ford models, Ford Otosan is investing €2billion and growing employment by around 3,000 to increase vehicle production capacity, including for the next-generation Transit Custom model.

JOINT VENTURE Ford’s move to an all-electric future in Europe was also highlighted by the recent announcement that Ford, SK On Co., Ltd. and Koç Holding have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for a new, industry-leading joint venture in Turkey. Subject to execution of a final agreement, the three partners plan to create one of the largest EV battery facilities in the European wider region. Production is intended to start as early as middecade with an annual capacity likely to be in the range of 30 to 45 Gigawatt hours. Ford will continue to electrify its iconic Transit models to suit different customer requirements. By 2024, E-Transit will be joined by four additional new fully-electric models in the Transit family as Ford moves toward its target of zero emissions for all vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint of facilities, logistics and suppliers by 2035.

AWARD-WINNING E-Transit is offered in two series – Leader and Trend – and all vehicles offer significantly higher specifications than the equivalent diesel model. Indeed, E-Transit has already earned a Gold Award from independent vehicle safety authority Euro NCAP for its comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. The available technologies include Pre‑Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Information System with Lane Change Warning & Aid, Lane Departure Warning,

Lane-Keeping Aid, and Junction Assist. Key new driver assistance systems that help minimise repair costs include Reverse Brake Assist, which uses a camera and sensors to detect pedestrians, cyclists and static obstacles when reversing and can deliver a warning before automatically stopping the vehicle if the driver does not react. Drivers also benefit from a new 360-degree camera, giving a birds-eye view of E‑Transit’s surroundings on the 12‑inch dashboard screen to help avoid obstacles when manoeuvring in tight spaces with a limited view. “Ford Transit has defined ‘the Van’ in UK culture for 56 years”, said Mandy Dean, director, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Britain. “Now, E-Transit’s market-leading range represents a significant shift forward not only as a vehicle to reduce carbon emissions, but as a connected vehicle, equipped with data services that will support SMEs and large businesses alike.”

FORD PRO Meanwhile, Ford Pro is launching an integrated charging solution designed to help European customers find the best charging strategy for their electric vehicle fleets, install charging infrastructure, and optimise the vehicle charging process.

optimise the charging process. Simplified billing and administration via Ford Pro Charging software also supports fleets whose drivers take their work vehicle home, as well as streamlining public charging. “Ford Pro Charging offers fleets a single, integrated solution covering the entire charging process, delivered by a partner they can trust,” said Iza Lozowska, European manager, Ford Pro Charging. “We will work hand-in-hand with them to future‑proof their business by finding the right charging strategy, making the switch to electric vehicles as simple as possible.”

BESPOKE SOLUTIONS Ford Pro Charging understands that the most effective fleet charging solution will vary caseby-case. Even customers that have fleet duty cycles and depot facilities that allow on-site charging may find that individual depots within the same fleet have unique requirements. Ford Pro Charging’s expert consultants work with each depot to identify the most efficient, futureproof charging solution and project-manage

the entire planning and commissioning process, meaning even fleets with limited knowledge of electrification options can easily make the switch. Many fleet drivers take their vans home after shifts, and so will require a charging solution away from the depot. To help operators continue to support drivers following fleet electrification, Ford Pro Charging offers a home charging solution that delivers convenient overnight charging and reduces paperwork for managers and drivers. When installed at a driver’s home, an unobtrusive Ford Connected Wallbox can charge work vehicles and automatically send charging reports to the fleet manager’s centralised system. A unique fob associated with the vehicle is needed to activate the charger, helping prevent fraud and ensuring that fleet managers only receive relevant charge reports. Ford Pro software can generate usage reports so that reimbursing drivers for home charging is quick and easy. Fleet managers can also remotely check if a vehicle has missed a charge slot at the driver’s home.

Ford Pro Charging is a key component of Ford Pro, and integrates with the other Ford Pro solutions to provide a seamless experience that delivers full control to fleet managers and simplifies charging for drivers – maximising effectiveness and productivity. To support commercial fleets as they make the complex transition to electric vehicles, Ford Pro Charging’s consultants will work with customers to help them identify the optimum charging solution for their business. The company offers an end-to-end, bespoke depot solution including hardware installation and management software that helps to

World premiere of VW’s new ID. Buzz Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have given the new ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo1 their world premiere in Hamburg. With Europe’s first all-electric bus and transporter range, Volkswagen is providing yet another solution to sustainable and CO2free mobility. The ID. Buzz comes with the latest ID. software and sets new standards in its segment with the latest systems and functions for safety, comfort and charging. Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars: “The ID. Buzz is a genuine icon for the electric era. A car, the likes of which only Volkswagen can build. In the 1950s, the Volkswagen Bulli stood for a new feeling of automotive freedom, independence and great emotion. The ID. Buzz picks up on this lifestyle and transfers it into our time: emission-free, sustainable, fully networked and now ready for the next big chapter: autonomous driving. With this car, we are bringing together the core themes of our ACCELERATE strategy in one product for the first time.” Carsten Intra, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Brand, adds: “Both versions of the ID. Buzz are pioneering in

70

terms of their sustainability: their manufacture and shipping has a carbon-neutral footprint. We are also using recycled synthetic materials and the interior is completely free of any real leather.” He continues: “The ID. Buzz will also be used for future autonomous mobility concepts such as ridepooling – an e-shuttle service of Group subsidiary MOIA that can be booked via an app. The electric Bulli is thus also a part of the future of inner-city transport.” Included as standard in the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo is the ‘Car2X’ local warning system, which utilises signals from other vehicles and the transport infrastructure to spot hazards in real time. Also included as standard: the ‘Front Assist’ emergency braking function and, in the MPV, the ‘Lane Assist’ lane-keeping assistant. With new software, new assistance functions are also making their way into the ID. family.

Plug & Charge The ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo are launching across Europe with a 77 kWh battery (gross energy content: 82 kWh). It provides

current to a 150 kW electric motor, which – as the flat engine once did in the T1 – drives the rear axle. The position of the battery, integrated deep down in the sandwich floor, and the lightweight electric drive system result in a good distribution of weight and a low vehicle centre of gravity. Both factors optimise the handling and agility.

If the second row of seats is folded down, the load capacity increases to up to 2,205 litres. Two or three seats up front, as the customer desires, and a fixed partition separating off the 3.9 m3 cargo space are distinctive features of the ID. Buzz Cargo. The zero-emission cargo version can take two loaded euro pallets, loaded in transversely.

The lithium ion battery can be charged from wall boxes or public charging stations using 11 kW alternating current (AC). Via a CCS plug connector at a DC rapid-charging station (direct current) the charging power increases to as much as 170 kW. When charged in this way, the battery charge level rises from 5 to 80% in about 30 minutes.

One feature of the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo is the long wheelbase of 2,988 mm, roughly the same as that of the current T6.1. The length of both versions is 4,712 mm. By virtue of what, in relation to the overall length, is a very long wheelbase, optimal use is made of the vehicle footprint. Including roof aerial, the two versions of ID. Buzz measure, dependent on specification, 1,937 mm or 1,938 mm in height. At 1,985 mm, the new model is 81 mm wider than a T6.1. The turning circle of 11.1 metres, meanwhile, is unusually small.

Spacious interior ID. Buzz drivers and passengers experience the new Bulli feeling in a spaciously designed interior. The layout is very clear, the concept well thought through and utilisation of space optimal. In the loungelike, friendly ambience of the MPV version, five people have ample room for travelling and for their luggage (1,121 litres of capacity).

The ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo will come onto the market in the first few European countries this autumn. Advance sales are due to start in May.
