The road to net zero is proving to be challenging for many in the industry, not least because of the lack of a proper infrastructure to support operators seeking to decarbonise their fleets. Problems are even more pronounced in Northern Ireland with recent government figures highlighting just how far behind NI is in providing adequate charge-points compared to the rest of the UK.

It is clear that if the logistics sector is to decarbonise effectively, in line with the government’s 2050 net zero deadline, more support will be needed to enable operators to do so, says Logistics UK whose Electric Vehicle Report 2023 demonstrates that factors including a lack of fiscal support and an inadequate public charging network are having a significant impact on the confidence of operators to invest in electric vehicles. While the majority of the businesses surveyed for the report plan to have decarbonised their van fleets by 2030, significant barriers remain that prevent the uptake needed ahead of the deadlines.

David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, tells us that with a lack of meaningful scrappage schemes, acquisition costs on the rise and volatile energy prices, it is an uphill battle that cannot continue without increased support from government.

On a lighter note, transport management software provider Mandata and the Road Haulage Association are running an inspirational campaign to discover the UK’s Kindest Town in an effort to create a more positive experience for HGV drivers on the road and at delivery centres. Individuals, businesses, and organisations in local towns are being encouraged to show acts of kindness, compassion, and community spirit towards drivers who play a critical role in delivering just about every consumable item required to keep the economy going. We have a full report in this issue on how you can participate in the initiative.

Also in this issue, we take a look back at the CV Show in Birmingham which attracted more than 220 exhibitors, giving operators the chance to get up close with the latest cutting-edge innovations in the industry, and of course we also have our regular contributions from the Road Haulage Association and Logistics UK, together with a round-up of the very latest developments on the shipping front and a look at what’s been happening in the world of vans and pick-ups.

Well, that’s it for now. Remember, you can keep up to date with all the industry news 24/7 by logging on to our website at www.exportandfreight.com.

Manfreight Limited to Lease New Logistics Warehouse in Belfast Harbour

Belfast Harbour has revealed that leading local logistics firm Manfreight will be leasing a new £9m logistics warehouse on West Bank Road. As part of its ongoing Port infrastructure investment programme, Belfast Harbour is solely funding the development of the new 50,000 sq ft temperature-controlled logistics facility.

Occupying a prime logistics location beside the Port’s RoRo ferry terminals and the Victoria Terminal 3 container terminal, the warehouse will service Northern Ireland’s agrifood producers and retailers for both import and export trading.

As the first warehouse in Northern Ireland to be constructed to BREEAM Excellent environmental standards, it will provide flexible high efficiency chilled and ambient warehouse space. Local construction firm, Felix O’Hare & Co has recently broken ground on construction, with completion scheduled for early 2024.

Visiting the site of the new facility, Steve Baker MP, Minister of State, Northern Ireland Office said: “Belfast Harbour is a key asset for the local economy, hosting more than five million annual visits, including 1.5 million ferry and cruise ship passengers and handling 70 percent of all the region’s seaborne trade.

“This £9m investment by Belfast Harbour in a new logistics warehouse facility, with Manfreight as a tenant, will significantly benefit Northern Irish agri-food producers and retailers boosting both import and export trading.”

Michael Robinson, Port Director at Belfast Harbour said: “As construction of this new logistics facility on West Bank Road gets underway, we’re pleased to announce that Manfreight will be the tenant, occupying the warehouse space on a long-term lease which demonstrates their confidence in the both local agrifood and distribution sector and also the competitive advantage the facility and its location will provide.

“Over the past decade, we have seen requirements change in the

logistics market, with occupiers requiring more modern, energy efficient facilities, and this site presented an opportunity to construct an occupier-led, purposebuilt warehouse in an ideal location within the Harbour Estate close to our main ferry terminals.

“With more than 500,000 sq ft of modern logistics space already developed in this part of the Harbour Estate, it is clear that the market sees the economic value of locating in the Port beside the ferry terminals.”

Chris Slowey from Manfreight, said: “The development of this new industry leading chilled warehouse is an important strategic step for Manfreight as we aim to meet our customers’ growing needs for more sustainable and digitised warehousing solutions.

“This new chilled warehouse in Belfast Harbour will bring new employment opportunities to the local area, in turn supporting and developing our local economy. We are very proud of our longstanding relationship with the Belfast Harbour and we are pleased they share our vision in developing and building sustainable, digitised and future proof warehouses for our business and more importantly our valued customers.

“This port-centric warehouse solution will allow us to store, cross dock and distribute products in a temperature-controlled ecofriendly environment. We will also be able to further enhance our fully automated Customs solutions for the import and export of these goods, making our supply chain processes more streamlined and efficient for all of our customers.”

Dedicated Diamond Trucks Technician

Dies After Motorcycle Crash

Tributes have been paid to 30 year old Diamond Trucks technician Connor McGrugan who died in hospital after his motorcycle and a car collided in Ballyclare.

Connor began his career with the Renault Trucks dealership at Mallusk as an apprentice and worked his way up to become a valued and highly respected member of the Diamond Trucks team.

Dealer Principal Iain Latimer says his death has left ‘a massive void’ and added: “Connor lived and breathed Renault trucks, going above and beyond in carrying out his day to day duties, even outside normal working hours.

“Taking on the role of foreman / technical supervisor, he was instrumental in training colleagues in fault finding, working with customers and service partners, and when we opened our depot in Warrington he was also involved in helping train new staff there. “We would like to express our deepest condolences to Connor’s mother, sister, partner and daughter and wider circle of family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues and friends here at Diamond Trucks, and further afield throughout the Renault Trucks network.” Connor is survived by his partner Torii, daughter Sophia, mother Diane, and sister Catherine. His funeral service was held in Lylehill Presbyterian Church, followed by interment in Ballyclare Cemetery.

DICKIE CURRAN D CURRAN & SONS

The transport industry and the world of motorsport is mourning the loss of yet another stalwart following the death of Dickie Curran after a short illness.

Born in 1956 to the late Glenn and Pat Curran, Dickie was one of six children; he married Shonagh in 2016, and had six young grandchildren.

Dickie got into the house removal business straight after he left school, and then progressed into haulage, starting in the early 80’s based in Bangor. Things grew steadily and he relocated to larger premises in Conlig. He always turned out a great fleet and in the early days had an impressive line-up of Scanias that regularly picked up awards at Truck Shows all over the province. He was always heavily involved in the design and specification of equipment meaning, along with standard road haulage, he could offer specialised work such as moffet mounty deliveries and walking floor loads. His aim was always to help the driver in the use of the equipment and also to create as much loading capacity as possible for the customer. The word ‘can’t’ was not in Dickie’s vocabulary, and there was nothing he couldn’t turn his hand to. He was fit to take an engine apart, and put it back together with his eyes closed! His two sons Mike and Chris joined the business straight from school, and today the business continues to grow.

Dickie’s passion was motorsport. He started with Superkarts where he held lap records everywhere he raced. He then dabbled a little in single seater racing cars before coming back to Prokarts to join son Mike for many successful years winning titles all over Ireland. After karting, he dived feet first into rallying where he enjoyed many successful years at the top level of the sport. Then, when many would be thinking of slowing down a little, he took up motorbikes taking part in Track Days in Europe. He lived life at 1000 mph. His impact on the world of transport was huge, and his loss will be felt forever.

Devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, step-father and uncle, a service to celebrate his life was held in St. John the Evangelist Parish Church, Killyleagh.

‘DAF Heroes’ programme celebrates the role of DAF Technicians

DAF Trucks has launched its DAF Heroes programme, the online knowledge and skills competition for DAF Technicians at the company’s 137 locations throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Developed to recognise the essential role that DAF Technicians play in the network, the company expects an increase on last year’s 540 Technicians to enrol in 2023. The need to recognise technicians has become increasingly important and DAF Trucks is placing greater significance on DAF Heroes this year; designed as a challenging, educational and fun initiative to demonstrate the company’s deep appreciation for its technical workforce. Incorporating a competitive element, technicians will answer online questions on current workshop trends and practices, and covering the entire DAF range, both old and new. Participants are separated into four leagues which are updated throughout the year. Four distinct skill levels have been devised to reflect stages of development and to attract engagement across the network’s demographic. Spot prizes are awarded throughout the programme, with further rewards for DAF Dealers with the highest engagement.

The live UK final will be hosted at DAF Trucks in Haddenham at the end of 2023 where the top

three winners from each skill level will compete to become DAF UK Technician of the Year. The winner – who will receive a cheque for £2,000 –goes through to compete in the DAF European Technician of the Year in Eindhoven in April 2024.

“DAF Heroes is about recognising the truly heroic role that our DAF Technicians play,” said Ian Grant, Aftersales Director at DAF Trucks, “During the pandemic, our technicians were, quite rightly, lauded for their selfless effort

in ensuring the wheels, literally, kept turning for essential services. For our customers and for all of us who depend on the goods that trucks deliver every day, our DAF Technicians are the real heroes, often going above their regular duties. That dedication,” he said, “remains today for all our customers, with DAF Heroes representing a competitive and rewarding challenge that demonstrates the company’s respect and appreciation for the team.

“A technical trade at DAF Trucks is a solid career choice,” added Grant, “2023 represents a fantastic opportunity to enter the industry, with electrification and abundant new technologies offering a huge range of options. I believe there’s a wealth of skilled people in this country; and I also believe many simply haven’t found their vocation. DAF Trucks can offer a huge range of job opportunities within a multi-discipline organisation.” ‘Made for DAF’

DAF Trucks also promotes upskilling through its ‘Made for DAF’ campaign, a pan-European initiative to encourage technically-minded people to join the truck industry. DAF’s current focus is on car and van technicians and to encourage them to switch to a career within the heavy truck industry; a key differentiator between the industries is that truck technicians can expect a higher salary than their car / van counterparts.

Apprentices

For young people, DAF Trucks also sets the standard for attracting school-leavers to the truck industry. The DAF Apprenticeship programme is currently delivering dedicated learning to approximately 400 young people on three-year apprenticeships covering Parts, Service and related management courses. Apprenticeships are managed at the DAF Academy based at Bristol College and with placements throughout DAF Trucks 137point UK dealer network.

Combilift premieres new product at LogiMAT

As Combilift celebrates 25 years of innovation, the company plans to ensure that 2023 will be a year to remember, by launching multiple products across various exhibitions on a global scale.

To kick off, the newest product – the COMBi-CUBE was launched at the LogiMAT International Intralogistics show in Stuttgart. This new electric model incorporates a host of technological and design features that not only enhance handling procedures but also offer a high level of driver comfort. Immediately noticeable is the new vibrant colour - this bold fresh Combi-green shade will contribute to improved safety as the trucks will be easily visible in their operational environment. Aside from optics however, a focus is on a number of ergonomic features. The driver’s position in the centre of the cab offers generous room and excellent all-round visibility. The angle of the telescopic steering column can be adjusted and the Grammer MSG65 seat, combined with hydraulic cabin mounts guarantees a comfortable ride. An

adjustable arm rest is mounted to the seat suspension which incorporates a multi-function joystick and an LCD colour touch screen.

Combilift’s unique dynamic 360 steering that enables seamless directional change while on the move can be integrated

into the Combi-CUBE as an optional extra, making it the most manoeuvrable counterbalance forklift on the market. Further notable features are the large rear wheel and rubber tyres on all three wheels. This means that, unlike certain other brands of electric multidirectional trucks, this model is not restricted to super flat floors and is eminently suitable for working indoors and out, ensuring that semi-rough terrain is no impediment to reliable operation. And for quicker battery changeover during heavy shifts, two new easy-change roll-out batteries are provided. Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar said: “Our engineers and R&D department have been tirelessly preparing for a year of new launches, and the Combi-CUBE is proof of our continued commitment to provide the best and most innovative handling solutions for our worldwide customers.”

BRIDGESTONE CONTINUE THEIR FUEL SAVING JOURNEY WITH DIXON TRANSPORT

Bridgestone has recently renewed their trading relationship with Dixon Transport, the North Dublin based fleet which now includes Carna Transport. Bridgestone Ireland say they are continuing their fuel saving journey with Dixon Transport using their low rolling resistance Ecopia H002 drive, steer and trailer tyres.

Bridgestone and Dixon Transport have been working together since 2014 after a competitive trial with Ecopia delivered leading performance including exceptional fuel saving capability. Dixons say that it’s the package of a performing product, on the ground service and strong local supply chain that makes Bridgestone their preferred partner. Dixon Transport were already using a low rolling resistance tyre when they began their relationship with Bridgestone. They carried out a 15 month trial measuring Ecopia’s performance and getting driver feedback. The tyre is now fitted throughout the fleet as their chosen fitment and continues to deliver their specific and demanding requirements according to Dixons. The Ecopia H002 is a specially engineered tyre for long distance motorway operation. The Bridgestone engineers say the Ecopia’s tread pattern resists deformation as a result of a unique NanoPro tech compound which delivers best in class rolling resistance. In addition the high silica content in the tyre offers best in class wet traction according to the independent testing organisation TUV. Top rated wet grip is also part of the product’s capability thanks to highly engineered contact area. The specially designed and robust casing ensures a longer tyre life and means Ecopia has great retreadability and to complete the package the tyre is winter compliant with 3PMSF and M+S markings. Bridgestone has been able to compliment the tyre’s class leading offering with strong service elements, including tyre pressure monitoring, breakdown service and technical advice. Dixons say the tyre pressure monitoring has been a significant help identifying pressure problems in advance and reducing breakdowns as a result. Correct tyre pressures makes a

further contribution to fuel saving.

“We have developed a great working relationship with Dixon Transport in recent years allowing us to understand their fleet tyre needs,” says Andrew Frizzell, National Fleet Manager, Bridgestone Ireland. “This has allowed us to tailor their tyre and service package to meet their priorities including reduced fuel consumption and vehicle down time.”

Dixons say that Bridgestone’s robust supply chain is an important factor in the relationship with the company. Bridgestone are the only tyre manufacturer with their own warehouse and logistics in Ireland.

The Balbriggan warehouse is backed

up by a European distribution centre in Zeebrugge and direct shipments from European factories ensuring an uninterrupted supply of tyres. Dixon Transport along with Carna Transport operate over 350 tractor units and 220 trailers. Based at St. Margaret’s near Dublin Airport they are specialists in temperature controlled logistics. Michael Dixon International Transport was founded by Michael Dixon in 1998 and has grown to become one of Ireland’s most successful operators. It has a UK base in Coventry and now includes Carna Freight’s centre in Keady, Co. Armagh in its logistics network. They are winners of numerous industry awards for their fleet and operations.

“We are happy to be continuing our relationship with Bridgestone who are helping us to deliver on behalf of our customers,” says, Fleet Manager, Dixon Transport. “Their products and service help to keep our fleet running efficiently and safely every day.”

Schmitz Cargobull UK and Ireland Strengthens Its Sales Team as Production Ramps Up

Schmitz Cargobull has made a series of new appointments to its UK and Ireland sales team following the doubling of production capacity at its Manchester manufacturing plant and the introduction of a third new trailer aimed at the local markets.

After 11 years at the company, Mark Smith has been promoted to the newlycreated role of UK Key Accounts Manager, looking after major national fleets.

Aaron Howarth, who has spent the last year in Schmitz Cargobull UK’s Aftersales Team and previously worked for Mercedes-Benz for 15 years, takes over from Smith as Regional Sales Manager for the East Midlands.

Benjamin Clayton has joined the business as Regional Sales Manager for the South, bringing 11 years’ experience in the automotive

industry, including roles at Marshall Fleet Solutions and Asset Alliance Group. And Philip Keenan joins as Regional Sales Manager for Ireland, following more than 10 years’ experience working for some of the country’s leading haulage and logistics companies, including Dixon Transport and DG McArdle International. The appointments follow an increase in production at the company’s Manchester facility, which now produces three trailers specifically for the UK and Ireland – the S.BO PACE, the

S.CS FIXED ROOF and the S.CS FREEPOST. Smith, who will be drawing on more than 25 years’ transport industry experience to help grow the company’s blue-chip customer base, says: “With the increase in production capacity at our Manchester plant and the diversity of the Schmitz Cargobull portfolio, we are able to offer customer-tailored solutions for their transport operations.”

In addition to the three locally-built models, the team will be supporting customers with the entire Schmitz Cargobull portfolio including the popular S.KO COOL, M.KI tippers and skeletal trailers.

All four new appointments will report to Stephen Mallett, Head of Sales, Schmitz Cargobull UK & ROI.

Longer Semi-Trailers to Provide Much Needed Environmental Boost, Says Logistics UK

Logistics UK has welcomed the permanent fixture of Longer Semi-Trailers (LSTs), as announced by government, hailing it as an opportunity to reduce road emissions and industry costs.

Able to transport a higher volume of goods, resulting in fewer vehicles needed and subsequent reduced running costs, LSTs will provide a much-needed economic boost for the sector that is currently facing escalating costs related to decarbonisation investments and soaring inflation.

In the view of Logistics UK, the announcement will also bring many environmental benefits due to lower congestion, and with less vehicles on the road, also has the potential to increase road safety.

Regulation comments: “The introduction of LSTs into general service will increase the scope and scale of the goods which our industry is able to transport, increasing efficiencies and reducing the environmental impact of delivering for the UK’s economy.

“Over the past few years of the trial, our members have proved that LSTs provide operators with a cost-efficient, environmentally prudent alternative to conventional vehicles and our members remain committed to rolling them out across the wider industry as soon as possible.”

Continental Hybrid Wins Red Dot Award

Milton Glaser, the celebrated graphic designer who created the world-famous ‘I LOVE NY’ rebus, once said: ‘There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.’ And ‘Wow!’ was precisely the response to the Continental Hybrid HS5 and Hybrid HD5 tyres at this year’s Red Dot Award.

The two commercial vehicle tyres fought off stiff competition to win the Product Design category in this annual competition for product and industrial design, brand and communication design, and design concepts.

“We are particularly delighted to receive the award for the first two models in our new generation of tyres,” says Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development Bus and Truck Tyres at Continental. “It is an endorsement of the quality and strength of our development work, which involved bringing together concept and mileage with design and performance.”

The new Continental Hybrid family of Generation 5 tyres have been developed for

the rigorous demands of daily operation in the transport and logistics industry. They cope effortlessly with frequent acceleration, braking, manoeuvring and cornering on a variety of road surfaces, while offering high mileages, excellent durability and optimum traction. The tyres also help to bring down a truck’s fuel consumption effectively and minimise fleet costs thanks to their lowered rolling resistance. “Tyre design plays a key role here in a number of ways,” explains tyre expert Kaiser. “It reinforces brand identity by emphasising innovative strength and technological sophistication.”

The design of both winning tyres, particularly

of the tread, clearly highlights the operating principles at play. And tyre design is of crucial importance for ensuring our products are clearly distinguishable from those of other brands. “When developing the Generation 5 tyres, we were looking to bring a logical evolution of the long series of successful Conti Hybrid truck tyres onto the market, with its innovations easily identifiable,” adds Kaiser. “We also had to come up with an appropriate design language that would indicate the tyre’s use in freight haulage.”

The hexagonal hatching effect on the tyre sidewall links it to the segment covered by the Conti Hybrid Generation 5 series. This has a particularly strong brand-enhancing effect when the tyres are fitted on the vehicle. In addition, new application icons combine with the product name to illustrate the tyre’s suitability for different road conditions. It all adds up to a thoroughly successful development concept that gets the vote of professionals on both a functional and design level.

Of the 40 attendees at the first webinar, 18% were non-FORS operators, representing a diverse make-up of companies from

across the transport spectrum. The overwhelming majority of participants were grateful for the opportunity to have their queries

aired in an open forum and to give feedback on their experience. From the post-event survey, the content and structure of the webinar

were both rated an average of 4.3 out of five, with one attendee responding with, ‘I think these sessions are excellent for picking up little bits of information that we might miss in The Standard. Hearing it from experienced people within the process really helps.’

Leading the FORS team, Richard Brundrett, FORS quality assurance specialist, said: “Alongside our regular FORS Regional Briefings, the Q&A webinars provide us with another excellent opportunity to engage directly with operators. However, the Q&As are unique in that non-FORS Accredited Operators are invited, and this seems to have struck a chord. We’re delighted with the attendance level at our first Q&A webinar and the feedback has been hugely constructive, so I hope more operators can join us at the next one.”

Individuals interested in attending the next FORS Q&A webinar – whether FORS accredited operators or otherwise – are invited to click and register here: https://www.fors-online. org.uk/cms/qa-session-withfors-specialists-webinar/

Freight association names training development manager

Graeme

Graeme joined BIFA’s training team in 2017 and has played a major role in the re-design of all of BIFA’s training materials since it took its extensive portfolio of training and education activities in-house, replacing an external contractor.

He has over 25 years of freight forwarding experience, including spells at Pantos Logistics, C.H. Robinson, MIQ Logistics and Emery Worldwide, and now heads BIFA’s five-strong training team.

Graeme reports to Carl Hobbis, one of BIFA’s executive directors who also has overall responsibility for the trade association’s training activities, and he says: “During Graeme’s six years at BIFA he has shown how his wide range of industry knowledge, covering many

aspects of forwarding and logistics, can provide excellent support for the delivery of our freight and customs training programmes.

“2022 was another excellent year for BIFA’s training activities, which continue to go from strength to strength and are generally seen as the most engaging in the industry. We are anticipating demand for all the different courses and programmes that we offer to remain high in 2023.”

BIFA director general, Steve Parker adds: “Brexit, the switch from CHIEF to CDS, and the development of a relevant freight forwarding apprenticeship, are among a number of factors that have led to a significant increase in the demand for our training programmes.

The UK’s Kindest Town’ Initiative by Mandata and the RHA

Leading transport management software provider Mandata and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) are running and inspirational campaign –The UK’s Kindest Town.

Together, they want to create a more positive experience for HGV drivers on the roads and at delivery centres. To accomplish this, they’re encouraging individuals, businesses, and organisations in local towns to show acts of kindness, compassion, and community spirit towards drivers. Ultimately, the aim is to promote mental health awareness across the UK’s road haulage industry and to have a positive impact on drivers’ mental and emotional well-being.

Lorry drivers play a critical role in delivering just about every consumable item required to keep the economy going. They often spend long hours on the road. It’s a demanding job, and many drivers experience loneliness being

away from their families and loved ones, often for extended periods.

How participation works

• Road haulage business owners, traffic planners, and HGV drivers are invited to vote for their favourite towns, specifically those where they have experienced kindness.

• They complete a brief questionnaire covering various criteria of their experiences in these towns, including Access to amenities, Parking, and Kindness of the local people during individual interactions or on the town’s surrounding roads.

• Entries can be submitted via https://www.mandata. co.uk/kindtown/ until midnight on 14 July.

Great prizes to be won

• Participants stand a chance to win a £2,500 holiday voucher or a weekly (individual) £100 Amazon voucher

• In addition, HGV drivers can compete for a £500 Amazon voucher by crafting creative social media posts that spotlight their chosen town.

• The winning town will be announced on 25 July 2023 and will receive a prize

package worth £10,000!

• Announcements will be made across social media channels.

Sandra Pretorius, Chief Marketing Officer at Mandata Group, said, “The search for the UK’s Kindest Town, as voted for by road hauliers, is all about reminding the public that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness towards HGV drivers can have a tremendous impact on not only their mental health, but on everyone who witnesses such kindness. Kindness begets kindness, but every chain reaction needs a spark. It is our hope that this campaign will be the inspiration that reignites random acts of kindness in towns across the country.”

Richard Smith, Managing Director at the RHA said, “The RHA is thrilled to collaborate with Mandata on The UK’s Kindest Town campaign. By shining a light on the importance of demonstrating support towards HGV drivers, we hope to create a more compassionate attitude towards them and make a real difference in their lives. We are proud to support this initiative and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the industry and the wider community.”

McGIMPSEY MOVES AHEAD WITH NEW MERCEDES-BENZ ACTROS FROM MBNI TRUCK & VAN

IN PROFILE WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM 20 EXPORT&FREIGHT
Six years after buying its last Mercedes-Benz tractor unit, Northern Ireland-based McGimpsey Removals returned ‘home’ to the three-pointed star for its latest purchase.

Delivered by local Dealer MBNI Truck & Van, the new arrival is a 4x2 Actros 1843, with aerodynamic StreamSpace cab. It joins a fleet of 12 other trucks – four artics and eight rigids of various sizes – as well as five Luton-bodied vans.

Operations Director Steven Gibbons explained: “Some years ago our fleet was dominated by Mercedes-Benz, and we were always very happy with the quality and reliability of the trucks and the service from the Dealer.

“Then we were tempted away by a cut-price offer and purchased some trucks from a rival brand. Now, though, I’m very happy to have a new Actros on the fleet again. The new truck is clearly built to a very high standard and, once again, the service from MBNI has been exemplary.

“Sales Executive Adam Findlay listened very carefully to our particular needs and came back with a very competitive price for what is quite an unusual specification – a 4x2 chassis with a high-spec double sleeper cab. He was very attentive throughout the ordering and delivery process and has stayed in touch since the truck hit the road to make sure all is well.”

MULTIMEDIA COCKPIT

The Actros is powered by a 10.7-litre engine generating 315 kW (428 hp), which drives through a 12-speed Mercedes PowerShift

3 automated manual gearbox. The cab features Multimedia Cockpit, interactive, the optionally upgraded version of its intuitively-operated twin screen dashboard – in addition to a larger, 12in instrument panel, this comes with extra functionality. It works with a high-volume, step-framed SDC trailer and undertakes domestic and commercial removals work, as well as furniture logistics, between Northern Ireland and the UK mainland – like the rest of McGimpsey’s artic rigs the truck usually leaves the company headquarters in Newtownards on a Monday morning and does not return until the end of the week.

“Furniture removals mean you’re carrying a lot

of air so, while load space is important, we rarely get anywhere near the maximum permitted weight,” said Steven Gibbons. “That’s why both the tractor unit and trailer run on two axles.

“The Actros is a real high-quality truck, with a very well designed interior,” he continued. “The StreamSpace cab provides a comfortable living space, even for a team of two for a week at a time. It’s been well received by our drivers too and looks great in our colours, so it is a good advert for our brand when out on the road.

“We’re also glad to have reaffirmed our relationship with MBNI Truck & Van. MercedesBenz vehicles have always served us well, frequently over some very high mileages, and the Dealer has provided the quality back-up that helps keep out fleet running smoothly.”

McGimpsey Removals provides domestic and commercial moving and storage services across Ireland and the UK. It offers Northern Ireland’s only purpose-built storage facility exclusively for household and personal items, fine arts and antiques, and is also its only operator to gain the prestigious FAIM (federation of international movers) accreditation. The company’s Logistics Division, meanwhile, offers a tailored ‘white glove’ service for items including medical and gym equipment as well as new furniture.

Volta Trucks partners with Nexyad for advanced driver assistance system

Volta Trucks has announced a partnership with Nexyad to bring the next generation of driving coaching and scoring to aid drivers of the Volta Zero to achieve the safest driving style possible in an urban environment.

Nexyad, the embedded, realtime platform for aggregating onboard data, uses hybrid physicsinformed AI to aggregate various data sources from vehicles in real-time and interprets them. This offers Volta Trucks’ drivers simple and relevant information that can help them develop an increasingly prudent driving style, minimising risk for themselves and other vulnerable road users. The real-time data aggregation platform uses vehicle information and driving conditions to provide a maximum prudent speed recommendation, taking into account the legal speed limit, road roughness, topography of the road, weather conditions, and traffic. By recommending a “maximum prudent speed” based on real-time information, the system goes beyond the European requirement ISA (Intelligent Speed Assist). Nexyad’s safety coach, SafetyNex also acts as a virtual co-pilot in the cabin while driving and provides anticipation guidance when necessary, helping

to avoid emergency situations that may lead to an accident. The real-world information gathered can then provide drivers with a safety score that reflects their driving style and acts as a catalyst for a range of solutions that motivate safer driving practices. Meanwhile, fleet managers can effortlessly track and monitor their driver’s performance with greater precision, and insurance companies

can accurately assess risk levels and offer tailor-made premiums for every driver’s individual risk profile. For the next few months, Nexyad’s safety coach technology and driving score will be running in Volta Trucks’ prototype vehicles and available for customer trials. All collected data is available to the company operating the truck, which decides on the use of the data based on existing

Combilift donates its 75,000th truck to International Charity

As part of Combilift’s celebrations for its 25th anniversary, the Irish materials handling specialist has announced that it is donating its 75,000th truck - an Aisle Master articulated forklift - to Convoy of Hope, a non-profit humanitarian and disaster relief organization.

Convoy of Hope works alongside communities and its wide network of volunteers aim to alleviate poverty and hunger and to bring help

and hope wherever they are most needed in the world. As this type of aid is sadly always in demand, operational expansion has also seen

agreements with its drivers.

Chief Fleet Solutions Officer of Volta Trucks, Casper Norden said: “Safety is at the heart of Volta Trucks and our ambition is to produce the safest trucks possible for the urban environment. The Volta Zero has been engineered from the ground up with both the driver and vulnerable urban road user safety at its core. The innovative system from Nexyad, incorporated into the Volta Zero, provides drivers and fleet operators with next-level information, helping to promote safer driving and making cities safer for all users.”

Chief Executive Officer of Nexyad, Gerard Yahiaoui said; “Nexyad is very proud to integrate its Artificial Intelligence based Safety Coach into the innovative all-electric Volta Zero. Our AI technology SafetyNex, brings prudent recommended speed to the dashboard of a truck and will help avoid accidents, particularly in dense city areas where Volta Trucks’ offer makes a lot of sense for delivery. Avoiding accidents is our mission, We Save Lives.”

a corresponding increase in the requirement for warehousing capacity to accommodate the vast volume of supplies that are stored and ready for delivery to areas in need. The World Distribution Center is based in Springfield, Missouri, and from this location at the “crossroads of America” truckloads of relief supplies and food are sent on their way across the USA and further afield around the globe. Combilift supplied its first Aisle Master for this site four years ago, and a further three units were delivered last year.

Convoy of Hope’s Senior Director - Distribution Jeff Smethers: “A lot of our exponential growth has been down to the Aisle Masters as they enable us to get more loads in and out faster. And thanks to Combilift’s free warehouse layout service and the Aisle Master’s narrow aisle capability we have achieved the best possible storage density and very efficient operation.” The announcement was made at a gala dinner in Chicago during the ProMat trade fair, and Combilift’s CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar said: “The work that Convoy of Hope does is invaluable to relieve suffering around the world and we wanted to make our own contribution by donating our 75,000thtruck to this very worthwhile charity.”

Erick Meier, Senior Vice President - Supply Chain at Convoy of Hope said: “We are so grateful that Combilift and Martin and the whole team have actually given us one of these trucks for our operations. This is going to help people for years – and ensure that every day someone in the world will receive aid - and that brings hope.”

Bandvulc unveils next generation Citymaster 5 tyre

Bandvulc has unveiled its new Citymaster 5 retread tyre for the bus and coach sector. As with previous tyres in the range, the next generation Citymaster 5 majors on delivering exceptional reliability, durability and safety for operators of passenger carrying vehicles.

Key to achieving these standards with the Citymaster 5 is the all-new reinforced sidewall, developed exclusively for the bus and coach market. Tyres used in urban applications are frequently exposed to sidewall scrubbing, with buses and coaches especially vulnerable when pulling over against a kerb to collect and drop off passengers. This can cause damage to the tyre, resulting in the need to fit a replacement prematurely.

The Citymaster 5’s reinforced sidewall adds an extra layer of rubber compound to the outer sidewall for added protection against kerbing. The tyre also features a dimple indicator, moulded into the sidewall rubber in three places. This allows operators and technicians to easily see when a tyre has been ‘scrubbed’ enough to begin compromising its performance and should be considered for a change.

The high polymer rubber compound used in the Citymaster 5 has been designed to resist punctures and withstand the punishment of start-stop use. Both are vital to maintaining passenger safety and reliability of service.

Tony Mailling, Head of Hot Retread Production EMEA and ContiLifeCycle Plant Manager, said: “Our bus and coach customers demand the very highest standards from their tyres. We created Citymaster 5 to not only meet their needs, but to exceed them. These operators are responsible for transporting large numbers of passengers on a daily basis, so safety is critical.

“As with all of our retread tyres, every casing is checked by our experienced team of specialists, and we have multiple processes, standards and ISO accreditations

in place to ensure every tyre that leaves our factory is of the uppermost quality.”

Along with the added resilience afforded by the reinforced sidewall, Citymaster 5 also promotes great handling characteristics through its solid shoulder design, a wide contact area to combat lateral forces and additional deep sipes to provide excellent traction and grip. The proven tread pattern is retained from the tyre’s predecessor, the Citymaster 2, and is offset for noise reduction, with grooves designed to lessen the impact of any punctures.

EXTRA ROBUST

Entirely new are the ‘XD Extra Robust’ and ‘XF Extra Robust’. The series combines the robust cabs of the XDC and XFC with an on-road chassis. This is the perfect solution for operators in the construction and municipal segments who value the lowest vulnerability but do not need full off-road capabilities. The robust front execution with its prominent high-mounted bumper is always combined with a neatly integrated front under-run protection beam and is available on all XD and XF rigid and tractor configurations.

The New Generation DAF trucks programme has been extended to include a full series of 4 axle variants with single drive for on-road applications. These chassis versions, with steered pusher axle and/or (non-)steered trailing axles, are ideal for applications such as heavy container transport, sewer cleaning and heavy waste collection.

The outstanding fuel efficiency performance –resulting in the lowest emissions –is the result of amongst others a highly aerodynamic design and application of the latest PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 drivelines with TraXon gearbox.

This automated transmission features, upon request, dedicated off-road software and ‘ASR-off’ as well as ‘Rock-Free’ functionalities for moving off in slippery conditions and to facilitate fast rocking to help extricate the vehicle in extremely tough circumstances. A full range of gearbox PTOs is also available.

EASY BODY INSTALLATION

DAF’s close collaboration with leading European bodybuilders results in industryleading bodybuilder-friendliness, including predefined ‘Plug and Play’ options. Furthermore, software integration enables simplified data sharing and communication between vehicle and superstructure allowing a perfect integration of controls, signals and warnings.

All new versions for construction, municipal and other vocational applications benefit from the new safety and driver comfort standard introduced by the New Generation XD, XF, XG and XG+. All trucks feature a large windscreen and ultralow belt lines for exceptional direct and indirect view, which is supported by the optional kerb view window and state-of-the-art technologies such as the DAF Digital Vision System and the unique DAF Corner View. A wide suite of driver assistance systems as well as class-leading ergonomics also contribute to best-in-class safety. In addition, the New Generation DAF trucks offer a perfect accessibility, an unmatched interior space and the best possible working and living environment for outstanding driver comfort. DAF completes its successful New Generation XD, XF, XG and XG+ range with a full range of 2, 3 and 4 axle tractors and rigids for construction, municipal and other vocational applications, all requiring tailor-made solutions for highest efficiency, optimal safety and unprecedented driver comfort. Convicted on Tachograph, Excess Weight & Licensing Offences

A County Londonderry driver was convicted at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £550. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement staff stopped an articulated lorry at the DVA weighbridge site in Toome.

The vehicle combination was weighed and the following was noted; the plated gross vehicle weight of 7500Kgs, was overloaded by 971Kgs 12.9%; the plated gross train weight of 11000Kgs was overloaded by 1441Kgs 13.1% and the first axle of the trailer weight of 1500Kgs was overloaded by 170Kgs 11.3%.

Regulations require the weight shown on a plate fitted to a vehicle, should not be exceeded. The Department records were checked, and it was noted that the vehicle was not covered by a valid goods Vehicle Operators Licence.

Regulations require a goods vehicle exceeding 3500Kgs to be specified on a valid Goods Vehicle Operators Licence. The vehicle combination weight was such that it required the driver to be the holder of a C1+E unrestricted driving licence entitlement, the driver did not possess such entitlement on his licence. The driver’s licence did entitle him to drive such a vehicle combination as a learner, he was unaccompanied and not displaying “L” plates.

Regulations require the holder of C1 provisional driving licence, to be supervised whilst driving. The driver was asked to produce his driver CPC qualification card, which he was unable to do as he did not possess a CPC card.

Regulations require a commercial driver of a vehicle exceeding 3500Kgs to be in possession of a Certificate of Professional Competence. The driver had also used his analogue driver card in excess of 24 hours which is an offence.

Tachograph Didn’t Meet Requirements

A County Armagh operator was convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £600. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement Officers stopped an articulated lorry in the vicinity of Belfast Harbour.

The gross vehicle weight was noted to be 44000kgs, therefore requiring tachograph recording equipment to be installed, calibrated and used.

When examined the tachograph recording equipment was noted to be a Siemens VDO digital tachograph which did not meet the calibration requirements. On request the driver produced a digital driver tachograph card from the recording equipment.

The driver’s digital drivers’ card and the tachograph vehicle unit were downloaded. When analysed it was established that the vehicle tachograph unit did not hold a valid calibration certificate as the previous calibration had expired. Furthermore, the vehicle unit had not been previously downloaded and the digital driver’s card had also not been previously downloaded by the operator. Under the EU Regulations 581/2010 operators are required to carry out a download of their employee’s driver card every 28 days. A download of the vehicle unit is required to be downloaded every 90 days. Analysis also revealed one occasion where the vehicle was driven without an appropriate driver’s card for 42 minutes covering a distance of 37km’s which is an offence.

Tachograph Had Not Been Downloaded

A County Antrim driver was convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £500. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement Officers stopped a Mercedes rigid large goods vehicle near Banbridge

The driver’s digital tachograph card and Vehicle Unit were downloaded. The analysis highlighted that the driver’s card had not been downloaded by the operator before.

CUTTING EDGE INNOVATION AT THE CV SHOW

The Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC in Birmingham proved to be a fantastic occasion for British industry as more than 220 exhibitors gave operators the chance to get up close with the latest cutting-edge innovation. There was a real buzz around the NEC on the opening Tuesday morning, kick started with BBC Breakfast broadcasting on site and a broad range of new vehicle debuts.

The big reveals included two zero emission truck launches and a good number of LCVs on show in Britain for the first time. Of course, the CV Show isn’t just about vehicles, but also the ‘eco system’ of the sector, so it was excellent to see a number of specialist component suppliers take the opportunity to launch their new products and present their innovations. As evidenced across the three days, the UK has strong and vibrant CV aftermarket that is key for operators to find their perfect vehicle and ensure it performs to the best of its abilities. The various sessions and panels at the event’s live theatres were keenly attended, with SMMT having two sessions on the first day, including Chief Executive Mike

Hawes discussing the progress and pitfalls of Britain’s path to a decarbonised CV industry. Environment Manager Sukky Choongh, meanwhile, launched SMMT’s position paper on HGV charging and refueling infrastructure, covering critical issues that were heard far

beyond the audiences in attendance thanks to the dozens of media attending the show. This year saw the introduction of the Truck Zone with a number of low- and zero emission trucks. The Department for Transport also sent a number of representatives for a fact-finding mission on behalf of the Minister of Transport, which left with plenty of information on the vehicles and the sector’s decarbonisation challenges, in particular their electric charging and hydrogen refuelling solutions.

The CV Show next year has been confirmed for 23-25 April, but in the meantime you can read about some of the highlights of this year’s event over the next few pages…

WEVC Electric Van Makes Global Debut

Watt Electric Vehicle Company (WEVC), a pioneer in the design, engineering, and manufacture of low-to-medium volume EVs, both under its own brand and for third parties, revealed its ‘game-changing’ light electric van.

Designed for production of up to 5000 vehicles per annum, the innovative and highly flexible vehicle, codenamed WATT eCV1, enables a wide range of electric commercial vehicle designs, facilitating mission-specific models which meet customers’ particular fleet requirements.

Following the signing of an MoU between WEVC and electric commercial vehicle specialist, ETRUX, earlier this year, an engineering prototype on display at the NEC was based on the WATT eCV1 3.5-tonne cab and chassis unit, complete with an ETRUX designed and built body. The next step is for WEVC’s electric vehicle platform technology will be adapted by ETRUX into a range of offerings for the commercial vehicle market. The first of multiple commercial vehicle offerings to come from WEVC, the eCV1 uses the company’s breakthrough, proprietary PACES architecture,

a sophisticated yet cost-effective modular electric vehicle platform. Developed to support commercial vehicle manufacturers, specialist vehicle converters and fleet operators in the transition to an electric future, PACES complies with ISO regulations and exceeds stringent European Small Series Type Approval safety standards.

It’s ’cell-to-chassis’ system means batteries are integrated to the primary structure (rather than having a separate battery pack), optimising stiffness, minimising weight, and maximising payload. As a result, the clean sheet design means the eCV1 has none of the structural, weight and packaging compromises

inherent in most electric LCV designs, many of which having been converted from ICE drivetrains and which are further constrained by traditional high volume manufacturing processes. The eCV1 features a central driving position which allows a safer kerbside exit for the operator, whichever side of the road the vehicle is driving or parked on. The cabin can be configured as a one-, two- or three-seater vehicle, with the large glass house providing superb visibility making the vehicle safer to drive and easier to manoeuvre and park. A further benefit of the central driving position is that it has allowed the A-pillars to be repositioned inboard, thus reducing frontal area and drag, a key metric in designing an efficient electric commercial vehicle. The unique platform design creates generous full standing height headroom, facilitating easy ingress and egress and a ‘walk through cabin’ option that is ideally suited for urban delivery vehicles.

RHA and Mandata launch ‘The UK’s Kindest Town’ campaign

On the first day of the 2023 CV Show RHA MD Richard Smith in association with road transport software experts, Mandata, launched a quest to find the UK’s kindest town.

Commenting he said: “A little kindness goes a long way and can make all the difference to people’s lives. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture – just kind a word at the right time.We at the RHA care passionately about our members and that’s why we’re pleased to support Mandata’s mission to find the UK’s kindest town.

“For hauliers that little bit of kindness from towns and people can make the difference between an ordinary day and a very good day. That’s why we’re pleased to support the competition to find out which UK town is the

kindest, as voted for by the hauliers themselves. “We hope that three months of continuous campaigning will help to improve attitudes towards, and facilities for, HGV drivers. Not to mention the mental health benefits they will get from being appreciated and being shown patience and kindness on the roads.” Key industry influencers on social media will also be brought onboard to ensure as many hauliers as possible see it and get involved with the voting process. “We will also be asking primary schools to enter a piece of art that celebrates truckers. It can

comforts such as a refrigerator and microwave make this an electrified home away from home. In addition to the environmental benefits an eHGV can deliver, they are also an impressive means to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership. EVs feature fewer moving parts than combustion models and very few consumables, meaning that serving and maintenance is notably cheaper. Additionally, their increased efficiency versus fossilfuelled vehicles makes running an EV fleet cheaper, especially when combined with taking advantage of off-peak charging rates at HUB locations. Many cities around the world are creating low-emission zones to improve air quality, and so driving a zero-emissions vehicle will help operators avoid daily charges.

be a song, painting, drawing, a poem, a story or maybe even a cake. We will also be asking KS2 primary schools to enter a piece of art that celebrates HGV drivers.” By following this link, https://www. mandata.co.uk/kindtown/ they can vote for what they consider to be their kindest town according to following criteria:

• Access to amenities, for example, the use of toilets at depots, distribution centres and other delivery sites

• Access to location, with no time or weight restrictions that slow deliveries.

• Good areas to park safely where they can rest and shower.

• Good, easy access to food and fuel.

• The kindness of local townspeople during one-to-one interactions (positive attitude, etc)

• The kindness of local people on the surrounding roads (courteous, safe driving, etc.)

HVS Unveils UK’s First ZeroEmission Hydrogen-Electric HGV

Zero-emission, hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle innovator, Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), has laid out its plans to disrupt the haulage industry, unveiling a clean-sheetdesigned hydrogen-electric Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV).

Showcasing its game-changing hydrogen powertrain in the form of a 40-tonne HGV technology demonstrator underlines the company’s objective of being the first indigenous UK designed and developed hydrogen-electric HGV on the market.

Founded in 2017, in Glasgow, HVS focuses on the ground-up design and development of zero-emission hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. The company comprises industry specialists, with vast experience in the automotive, energy, hydrogen technology, power electronics, sustainability and environmental management fields.

With government targets to curtail sales of all non-zero emission 3.5 -26t HGVs set to come into play by 2035 or earlier and all sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040, HVS and its world-leading technology have the potential to play a crucial role in allowing emissions reduction targets to be achieved. The company also has a defined route to market. In addition to funding from the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Innovate UK, Scottish Enterprise and Energy Technology Partnership, HVS’ strategic investment partner is the service station and grocery corporation, EG Group, offering hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, fleet customer base and the potential for global scalability.

Jawad Khursheed, CEO of HVS said: “We are delighted to reveal our 40-tonne HGV at the

Commercial Vehicle Show. This technology demonstrator showcases our ground-breaking hydrogen-electric commercial vehicle design and advanced powertrain technology. Our zero-emission trucks are a key part of decarbonising the logistics sector. Hydrogen is the perfect fuel for the haulage industry, offering long ranges and quick refuelling thanks to stations being easily integrated into existing key transport networks.

“What’s more, we will supply our customers with the most advanced HGV in the sector delivering a step change in driving experience and efficiency.”

Breaking the mould

HVS’ tractor units will be built on an all-new chassis, designed in-house around the hydrogen powertrain, which consists of pressurised hydrogen cylinders, fuel cells, an energy storage system and electrified rear axle.

Designed in-house by Pete Clarke, Head of Design, who has a wealth of experience designing commercial vehicles that he brings to bear on HVS’ striking truck designs, the unique ground-up design brings innovation in packaging, performance, efficiency, weight, range, consumption, maintenance, and lifecycle benefits. The technology demonstrator’s unique design allows significantly improved aerodynamics compared with current Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) trucks. Consequent benefits include enhanced fuel efficiency on long-haul runs and improved

spatial ergonomics within the cab, including better access and more room at the controls, not to mention sector-leading aesthetics.

Driver comfort is taken care of, and stress levels are reduced, all contributing to a safer and more efficient operational experience. Confidenceinspiring too, since the driver will be well aware that they are abreast of the latest technology.

HVS’ vehicle powertrain employs a fuel cell system and energy storage system to deploy electricity to an electric motor to transmit power to the wheels. It uses the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) to recapture energy under braking and while the truck is slowing down. The integrated powertrain is controlled with HVS’ advanced control system ‘SEMAS,’ which monitors interactions between drivers and control systems, delivering classleading fuel efficiency and durability. The fuel cell permits longer range, higher load-carrying capacity, and faster refuelling than would be possible using battery-electric technology alone: typical refuelling time is comparable to diesel, around 20 minutes to replenish the high pressure hydrogen tanks. It is in the long-distance HGV segment that hydrogen fuel cells offer the most advantages. The only emission from the vehicle is water vapour, meaning there are no harmful greenhouse gas emissions of any kind. Depending on the journey – the route travelled, road conditions and driving style – HVS’ HGV has the capacity to travel up to 370 miles (600km). Hydrogen-powered vehicles don’t need charging like a battery-powered Electric Vehicle. They are refuelled with hydrogen gas, stored at pressure in hydrogen cylinders. Refuelling takes a much shorter time than charging an equivalent battery vehicle and is comparable to filling a truck with diesel (about 15 to 20 minutes). Many hydrogen fuelling stations will be located at existing commercial vehicle forecourts, using dispensers that look very similar to conventional petrol and diesel ones, but with a different nozzle.

GOODS VEHICLE OPERATORS – DO YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS?

Anyone who operates a vehicle that falls within scope of the Goods Vehicle operator licensing scheme should be familiar with what entails both being granted the operator’s licence and also what is required to ensure they retain it, or so you would think!

When someone applies for an operator’s licence and also when it is granted the Department within Northern Ireland and the Traffic Commissioners within GB grant it on “Trust” that you will adhere to any legislative requirements surrounding the holding of such a licence and also you will adhere to certain “undertakings” or “promises” that you must adhere to, to retain the operator’s licence.

The operator’s licence is granted on you satisfying 5 key regulatory “columns” with some subtle differences between hire and reward or standard licence holders (haulage companies) and own account – restricted licence holders including:

• Financial standing/having sufficient resources.

• Professional Competence (standard licence holders only.

• Establishment (standard licence holders only).

• Good repute/fit and proper person.

• Having a suitable operating centre.

All potential or current operators should be familiar with these requirements and there is no need for me to set out the detail as this is adequately covered within the Department publications which can be accessed via the following link - https://www.infrastructure-ni. gov.uk/articles/transport-regulation-unit

However, it’s apparent some operators are not overly familiar with what is required as a consequence of the undertakings or conditions which are attached to and written on the actual operator’s licence. How many operators or transport managers actually read these and place these at the centre of the management of an operator’s licence?

The following is an exact lift from a current operator’s licence:

“The licence holder shall within 28 days of their occurrence, inform the Department of any: Changes in the maintenance and safety inspection arrangements; Changes in the ownership of the business including partnership arrangements. Company changes in shareholding need not be notified unless they cause a change in the control of the company; Any other changes, for example a change in the financial status of the licence holder (e.g. if placed in liquidation or receivership); or a change to a limited Company status, partnership, or company directors.

EVENT WHICH EFFECT…

The good repute of the licence holder and transport manager, in particular, convictions (this

includes the issue of a fixed penalty notice); The professional competence of the licence holder and/or transport manager;

The requirement for the licence holder to be of appropriate financial standing (including bankruptcy, liquidation, sequestration of estate or entry into administration of the holder or the appointment of a receiver, manager or trustee). The requirement to have an effective and stable establishment in Northern Ireland namely;

- Any changes to the specified address of establishment, and

- The requirement to have access at all times to at least one goods vehicle registered in the United Kingdom

GENERAL UNDERTAKINGS –STANDARD INTERNATIONAL LICENCES

The licence holder undertakes to make proper arrangements so that:

The laws relating to the driving and operation of vehicles used under the licence are observed; The rules on driver’s hours and tachographs are observed and proper records kept;

Motor vehicles and trailers are not over loaded; Vehicles operate within speed limits;

Motor vehicles and trailers, including hired vehicles and trailers, are kept fit and serviceable; Drivers report promptly any defects or symptoms of defects that could prevent the safe operation of vehicles and/or trailers and that

any defects are promptly recorded in writing; Records are kept (15 months) of all driver defect reports, all safety inspection, routine maintenance and repairs to vehicles and trailers and these are made available on request; and In respect of each operating centre specified, that the number of authorised vehicles and the number of authorised trailers kept there will not exceed the maximum numbers recorded against the operating centre in this licence; and an unauthorised operating centre is not used.”

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT

It’s essential all operators ensure that both they, their transport managers or the person responsible for managing the transport read and fully understand these requirements. It’s important to ensure that you don’t apply a “tick box” approach to these requirements.

Over the next few editions of Export & Freight

I intend to do separate articles on key elements of these requirements where operators need to review their systems to ensure they are actually effective at managing the elements of their operator’s licence that could bring them to the attention of the Department.

I will publish separate articles which will include Safety Inspections, brake tests, business entities, driver hours/tachographs and transport managers in the series of articles. This edition’s key element is: Safety Inspections

A safety inspection is a key element of an operator’s undertaking: Motor vehicles and trailers, including hired vehicles and trailers, are kept fit and serviceable; Most of the information that you need is already published. This isn’t just about having a preventative maintenance plan, its about ensuring how you manage it in line with the DVA guide a copy of which can be viewed at the following link - https://www.infrastructureni.gov.uk/publications/driver-vehicle-agencyguide-maintaining-roadworthiness

An operator’s plan must reflect the nature of the business, it’s an informed decision not just doing an inspection at whatever time frequency specified on the operator’s licence because “somebody” told you it was that period, “Think” about the type of vehicles, age profiles etc of the fleet. If you operate a varied fleet with some new s and others older. Specify a safety inspection frequency that reflects the

needs of the newer vehicles and undertake more frequent inspections on the older ones. Safety inspection sheets should be reviewed by the transport manager to ensure they are “effectively and continuously” meeting their legal obligation as a transport manager. Safety inspection sheets must be received and reviewed by a competent person on a timely basis and retained for a minimum of 15 months, there is no point in having a process whereby the operator receives safety inspection records weeks after the inspection and an administrator simply has the task of filing it and ticking the box. This is not “effectively and continuously” managing the transport undertaking! Safety inspection sheets are designed to ensure certain information and data are gathered to enable informed decisions to be made, by the person who is effectively and continuously managing the business! All data fields must be completed, be legible and in particular tyre data and brake test data must be completed, and understood. I will be doing a feature on brake test results as this is one of the most critical elements that is rarely understood by operators and transport managers.

LOGISTICS UK’S EV REPORT

While uncertainties remain regarding HGVs, battery electric is widely viewed as the massmarket solution to transitioning lighter commercial vehicles towards a greener economy. As the business group representing the logistics industry, Logistics UK published an Electric Vehicle 2023 report on 11 May 2023 considering operators’ current experiences of transitioning to EV. In this article, I will highlight some of the findings of the report, examining the challenges to uptake and feedback from those that have made the switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

At the end of Q32022, EVs represented 0.9% of the van parc, a small increase from 0.3% in 2019. And, while the majority – 62% –of respondents stated they plan to have decarbonised their van fleets by 2030, significant barriers remain that prevent the uptake needed ahead of government’s 2050 net zero deadline.

One of the key concerns among operators is cost. In addition to a rise in acquisition costs, respondents reported estimated costs to upgrade their energy supply of between £100,000 and over £1 million. Volatile energy prices are also a concern, with one member quoted £5,000 for every additional megawatt of electricity. With rising inflation, an increase in total vehicle operating costs and a reduction in energy support, like all sectors of the UK economy, the logistics industry is facing increasing financial pressures. With almost all respondents (95%) reporting higher total costs of ownership (TCO)– and 64% reporting TCOs being two to three times more expensive than an equivalent diesel vehicle – operators are facing difficult decisions regarding decarbonisation investments.

Recharging is vital, with all respondents citing energy supply

as their top priority and a third of respondents highlighting power supply infrastructure as one of their biggest challenges for fleet electrification.

To help support the transition to electric vehicles, Logistics UK is calling for further fiscal support from government, as well as a fair and equitable approach to funding depot electricity connections. We are also calling for more transparency on available grid capacity and a common service agreement amongst Distribution Network Operators for amore standardised process.

DIFFICULTIES

Within the report is a focus on public EV chargepoints, which are currently causing challenges for some operators. Over half of respondents reported difficulties in finding a free and usable EV chargepoint space, with many encountering broken or inoperable chargers.

This is concerning given the low number of chargepoints across the UK – and particularly, Northern Ireland – with figures from government, published in early May 2023, highlighting just how far behind NI is in relation to GB, with just 20 electric charging devices per 100,000 of the population,

compared with London’s 145. Significant frustration was expressed by those who regularly use public chargepoints at the lack of reliable and up to date information about available working chargepoints, as well as issues surrounding their suitability for commercial vehicles. To combat this, Logistics UK is calling for an EV charging and refuelling infrastructure roadmap designed in collaboration with business to work for logistics vehicles, backed with clear guidance and incentives for local authorities. A significantly accelerated rollout of public charging infrastructure that is fully accessible to commercial vehicles, with clear milestones for minimum levels of suitable chargepoint provision across the country must be prioritised if decarbonisation targets are to be met. Also noted in the report is the diverging attitudes to vehicle capabilities among operators who are looking to make the transition, and those who have made the switch. Respondents who are starting to consider electrification are frustrated that currently, available EV models do not always match their diesel fleets in terms of mileage range and load carrying. However, those who have operated

EVs for some time take a more pragmatic approach and have adapted their operations to work within the capability of the EVs available, recognising that likefor-like replacement of existing diesels is not always possible.

ADAPTABILITY

While logistics is an extremely complex industry, at its core is adaptability. This feedback from those that have made the transition is therefore positive, as is the news that 59% of respondents reported a good response from their drivers to operating EVs, with only 10% reporting negative or mixed reactions from their drivers. Overall, there is a real recognition among operators of the need to decarbonise. Of the respondents who have introduced EVs into their fleets, 58% have done so in the last two years, which is an encouraging sign that, while further fiscal support is needed, industry could see an acceleration towards electric vehicles in the near future. Logistics UK will continue to work with members, and government, to address the challenges highlighted by the report, and seek practical solutions that enable industry to move to a greener economy.

MERCEDES-BENZ TRUCKS UNVEILS REFRIGERATED eACTROS ELECTRIC DEMONSTRATOR

Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK has teamed up with leading bodybuilder Solomon Commercials to launch Britain’s first fridge-bodied eActros electric truck.

The 19-tonne GVW eActros made its debut at the ITT Hub event in Farnborough. A fully operational vehicle, it will now be offered for live demonstrations to operators across the country. The truck is based on a 4x2

eActros 300. Fitted with three nickel manganese cobalt battery packs, for a total installed capacity of 336kWh, it boasts a range of up to 330km (205 miles). The batteries can be recharged from 20

to 80% in 75 minutes, using a 400A 160kW charger. The eActros is designed from the ground up as an electric truck. Its twin electric motors are located

within the rear eAxle. With no need for a prop shaft, chassis space is freed up for the batteries to be set across the full width of the vehicle. This helps to create a low centre of gravity which, in turn, translates into improved driving dynamics. The motors drive through a special transmission with two forward and two reverse gears, allowing the truck to cruise at up to 89 km/h (55

mph). The absence of a combustion engine under the Classic Space cab means there’s much less noise and vibration than in a traditional diesel-powered truck. The body, meanwhile, is designed for optimum aerodynamic efficiency to reduce drag and thereby help to maximise range. It features a full Solomon Slipstream system incorporating tapered bulkhead, 3D roof deflector and sloping Kamm tail. Refrigeration is controlled by a Carrier TRS Syberia overcab chiller unit and Carrier Datacold temperature monitoring system. At the rear there’s a 1,500 kg Dhollandia column tail lift, as well as a reversing camera which is integrated with the truck’s Multimedia Cockpit display screens, so no extra in-cab hardware is required. Other standard equipment includes MirrorCam, Active Brake Assist 5, and an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System. Launched last year, the eActros is also available as a 6x2 chassis, with 27-tonne GVWand a bodyand-payload allowance of 16.6 tonnes, and as an eActros 400 with four batteries allowing up to 400 km (249 miles) of range. Deliveries of the first vehicles to

UK customers are now underway. Mercedes-Benz Trucks Head of Future Sustainability, James Venables, said: “The eActros is a truck for a new era, and

by launching this refrigerated demonstrator we’re showing that it’s ready to work in real-life applications – anyone interested in trialling this exciting vehicle

should contact their MercedesBenz Dealer as soon as possible. “We’re here to support operators on the journey towards CO2neutral transport too, though. All our Dealers are fully qualified and eTruck-ready, while our team of eConsultants can provide valuable advice and assistance on all aspects of electric truck operation, from charging infrastructure, to a range of digital services to increase utilisation and optimise the total cost of ownership.”

Solomon Commercials Managing Director Anthony Clegg added: “The road to net zero is no longer an optional extra; it’s a certainty, and more and more customers are actively looking to introduce carbon-neutral policies and to minimise the impact of their vehicles on the environment.

“We’re proud to work with manufacturers such as MercedesBenz, helping customers transition to zero-emissions transport. Adopting these vehicles is certainly picking up pace, particularly with the Government wanting to reach stringent emissions targets and create clean-air cities. Electric vehicles will play an important role in ensuring this is achieved.”

CLOSE BROTHERS COMMERCIAL FINANCE: OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES OF RISING COSTS

Businesses are confident about the future despite rising costs impacting cash flow, the Close Brothers Business Barometer suggests.

The survey, which canvassed the opinions of 900 senior SME decision makers in April 2023, found that 54 per cent of Irish Business leaders were confident that the economy would continue to grow, an increase of 11 per cent compared to this time last year. Overall, 90 per cent also believe their company will perform well, either expanding or broadly staying the same over the next twelve months. However, many flagged the impact that rising costs are having on working capital. Nearly a third of decision makers said that managing costs is their main priority this year.

The issue of late payments continues to be challenging. Regardless of how organised a company’s finances are, or whether they raise invoices on time, it is likely that at least some of their bills will be settled outside of agreed terms – something that the increase in costs has arguably made worse.

Of course, managing cash flow is vital for business success and, as a result, many are turning to solutions like invoice finance to ensure they have access to the capital they need. It’s simple. Companies receive a percentage

value of their unpaid customer invoices from a lender in advance. Then, when the invoice has been settled, they are paid the remaining amount minus an agreed fee. Those looking to raise larger levels of funding are using asset based lending, which blends invoice finance with funds released against other asset classes, such as stock, property or plant and machinery.

For some, Sale and HP back is an ideal form of refinance that can be used against most types of equipment, making it suitable for companies of all sizes, including sole traders. It works by selling an asset and leasing it back on a standard HP agreement, providing a valuable cash injection or equity towards new asset finance. Paul Stephens, Head of Corporate & ABL, said: “It is hugely encouraging to see high business optimism as we come out of the challenging period caused by the pandemic. The situation over the last two years has been tough, but the resilience and innovation we have witnessed first-hand has been impressive. Businesses have become more dynamic as they offset disruptions to labour shortages, delivery delays or scarcity and move away from a model of

‘just in time’ supply chains to ‘just in case’. However, to navigate the near-term, it is vital that SMEs have access to the funding they need to thrive. Our specialist asset finance, invoice finance and asset based lending teams continue to work closely with SMEs to ensure they can access the working capital they need.”

BPW’S CUTTING-EDGE TELEMATICS SOLUTIONS FOR ENHANCED FLEET MANAGEMENT

In today’s constantly evolving transportation industry, fleet managers and operators are faced with increasing demands for vehicle compliance, efficiency, and safety while reducing costs. Europe’s leading telematics provider, idem Telematics, a subsidiary of the BPW Group, offers cutting-edge solutions and services that give businesses an effective and innovative approach to streamlining their operations and staying ahead of the competition.

BPW’s idem telematics solutions provide commercial vehicle operators access to the latest advancements in the transport sector, enabling them to keep up with the everchanging industry. These solutions help fleet managers, making the process simpler and more cost-effective than ever before.

The Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA) recently released an updated and improved version of their ‘Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness,’ which outlines the recommended standards and procedures for maintaining commercial vehicles in a safe and roadworthy condition. Notably, Section 5.3 highlights the critical importance of brake performance assessments during safety inspections. According to the DVSA, a high percentage of MOT braking defects are only found during a brake performance test, and therefore, every safety inspection must assess the braking performance of the vehicle or trailer.

To address this issue, the DVSA advises using an Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) to monitor in service braking performance and provide a braking performance report for safety inspections. This approach helps to ensure that commercial vehicles are safe for use on the road, reducing the risk of accidents and improving road safety.

The BPW idem EBPM system was first developed by BPW engineers in the UK in partnership with the BPW Mechatronics Department in Germany and the award-winning telematics company, idem. EBPM is a system that monitors the performance of trailer combination braking and provides a facility to acquire the data in the form of reports. This innovative technology continuously monitors the air brakes by using data from the Electronic Braking System (EBS) and the idem telematics system, sending real-time data to the control unit, which can be accessed by the fleet manager via a smartphone app or telematics portal.

Only braking events that meet certain criteria and are deemed suitable for analysis are used to report on performance. With regular monitoring and analysis of trailer brakes, EBPM helps ensure

that the brakes are working optimally, reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall safety. The BPW idem system complies with the DVSA industry standard and guide for EBPM.

EBPM provides valuable insights into the braking performance of the trailers, highlighting how the braking system is performing against demand. The longer the system is used, the more accurate the data becomes. This enables fleet managers to make informed decisions,

improve operations, schedule proactive maintenance, and prevent costly downtime. Data reports can be generated for the fleet manager at various intervals to satisfy either statutory requirements or those demanded by the business for planning services. This is achieved by analysing real-time data to identify issues with the braking systems in a more timely manner than before. The accuracy of the data increases with time as the system is

TELEMATICS SOLUTIONS 50 EXPORT&FREIGHT WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM

utilised and more data is accumulated; reports can provide data on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis. However, a minimal sample of 100 qualified braking events is required for an Asset Report to provide an overall pass or fail.

COMPLIANCE & CONVENIENCE

Traditionally, trailer brakes are tested annually at MOT on a roller brake tester; this provides a performance figure for the trailer in a static condition. In recent times, there has been a move towards testing trailer brakes four times a year, one of which must be carried out at MOT time. Continuous monitoring of trailer brakes is an alternative.

By sharing the data from EBPM, compliance with the DVSA Earned Recognition Scheme is demonstrated, which reduces the frequency of the brake roller tests to once a year. The DVSA’s Earned Recognition Scheme allows vehicle operators to demonstrate their compliance, which helps them focus on their work to increase efficiency. Proactive scheduling for repairs and maintenance is also made

possible by automated EBS error alerts. This is a very cost-effective and accurate method for monitoring braking performance.

MANDATORY LADEN BRAKE TESTING

It is crucial to understand that the results of an unladen brake roller test for a trailer cannot be compared directly to the results for braking efficiency given by EBPM. As of January 1, 2023, the DVSA stated that goods vehicles and trailers must be fully laden unless exempt (tri-axle semi-trailers can still be presented for the test unladen as wheel locks are taken into account). This is because the retardation figures from an unladen test are normally a result of the wheels locking and therefore do not provide reliable performance data, whereas under varying loading conditions at highway speeds, the performance may differ. Trailers loaded to at least 65% of the maximum bogie load will yield more accurate results during a roller brake test.

ENHANCED FLEET MANAGEMENT

Through continuous monitoring, operators can identify potential braking issues well before regular maintenance checks, preventing these issues from escalating and causing prolonged downtime. This allows fleet managers to make more informed decisions regarding their trailers, leading to increased efficiency, improved safety, and reduced operating costs. With the BPW idem EBPM system, fleet managers can easily monitor, record, and analyse data to identify areas for improvement and optimise their fleet’s performance. This makes fleet management more seamless than ever before and enables businesses to achieve their operational goals more effectively.

Renault Trucks opens an e-learning platform for decarbonisation

Although the need to decarbonise transport is now widely accepted, it still raises questions among transport and logistics professionals. This has led Renault Trucks, an expert in electric mobility for nearly fifteen years, to launch the “Decarbonisation Academy”: a free e-learning platform open to everyone.

It provides answers to the main questions asked by professionals, to help them think strategically and plan the transformation of their business with confidence.

Nearly fifteen years ago, Renault Trucks began experimenting with electric technology with partner customers. For over three years now, the French manufacturer has been mass-producing electric trucks in its Blainville-sur-Orne factory. But making the energy transition in a business can seem long and tedious and Renault Trucks knows more than anyone else the doubts and reservations that transport professionals may have. In order to help them with their strategic planning, Renault Trucks has developed an educational tool that demystifies the transition to battery electric technology. Called the “Decarbonisation Academy”, this new on-line training platform, which is free and available to everyone, provides educational information produced by Renault Trucks.

Expert content

Renault Trucks has drawn on its

expertise and the knowledge it gathers daily from its customers in the field to create the content, thereby answering the most frequently asked questions.

The manufacturer has listened to the doubts expressed by hauliers who are reluctant to make the shift, and has also gathered testimonies from those who have encountered difficulties and have managed to overcome them.

All these good practices and experiences are shared

by the manufacturer in its e-learning programme aimed at demystifying electric technology and alternative energies.

The “Decarbonisation Academy” provides access to a catalogue of training courses featuring educational videos, expert opinions from inside and outside the company and the experiences of hauliers and bodywork specialists. Each course consists of several modules and is designed to be completed in under thirty minutes.

Four courses are already online:

- An introduction to decarbonisation, which gives an overview of the decarbonisation of road freight transport, including a comparison of alternative energies versus diesel.

- A course dedicated to electric trucks, which gives an insight into how they work and the positive impact they have on working conditions and quality of life. This course also looks at the introduction of Low Emission Zones.

- A course specifically devoted to lithium-ion batteries, which answers questions about their range, life span, the minerals used and recycling.

- Real-life examples of companies that have embarked on the path to decarbonising transport, the challenges they have faced, how they have overcome them and the benefits they are experiencing.

Learn Anywhere

Optimised for use on tablets or smartphones, the platform is designed for users to learn anywhere. After setting up a profile, learners can follow the course at their own pace, with the added benefit of being able to pause the course and return to it later on. On completing the course, participants can test their knowledge by taking a quiz and read additional articles on the subject. A certificate is issued at the end of the course.

Volvo Trucks Tests Hydrogen-Powered Electric Trucks on Public Roads

Last year, Volvo Trucks showcased its fuel cell electric trucks for the first time. These zero exhaust emission trucks use hydrogen to produce their own electricity onboard – making them suitable for longer transport assignments. Now, the trucks have been tested on public roads for the first time. But not just any public road. To make it extra-challenging, the tests have been conducted above the Arctic Circle in the north of Sweden – in an extremely cold climate. “Trucks are operating seven days a week and in all types of weather. The harsh conditions on public roads in northern Sweden, with ice, wind and lots of snow, make an ideal testing environment,” says Helena Alsiö,

VP Powertrain Product Management at Volvo Trucks. “I am pleased to say that the tests are going well, confirming those we carried out before, both digitally and on our confined test track close to Gothenburg.”

Fuel cell electric trucks powered by hydrogen will be especially suitable for longer distances and when using only batteries isn’t an option: for example, in rural areas with no charging infrastructure.

Volvo currently offers the industry’s broadest product line-up of battery electric trucks, with six models in series production, catering to a wide variety of transport routes in and between cities. The fuel cell electric trucks will be available in the

second half of this decade. Tests with hauliers will start a few years before the commercial launch. To speed up the development, Volvo Group has joined forces with Daimler to develop and produce fuel cell systems that are tailor-made for heavy-duty vehicles. For hauliers who want to offer zero exhaust emission transport already, Volvo Trucks currently offers six different battery electric models as well as trucks that run on renewable fuels, such as biogas. “We need to act now in order to stop global warming. Regardless of the transport assignments or where in the world our customers are operating, waiting is not an option. In a few years, our customers will be able to completely eliminate CO2 exhaust emissions from their trucks,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

Wincanton selects Renault Trucks as part of huge investment in electric vehicles

Wincanton has selected Renault Trucks as part of its multi-million pound investment in electric vehicle technology to provide home delivery services for IKEA.

The investment, which support IKEA’s goal of reaching 100% zero emission last mile deliveries by 2025, sees Wincanton purchase ten 16 tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech D16s, part of a 30-vehicle deal which also comprises 20 vans supplied by Ford. Powered by four x 66 kWh batteries and with a 5.3m wheelbase, the day-cabbed Renault Trucks E-Tech D16s will be equipped with TVSi box body and Dhollandia tail lift. The fully electric vehicles will carry deliveries to the homes of IKEA customers across Greater London and the South East of England from Spring 2023. The new 30 vehicle electric fleet is expected to save Wincanton 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, across just over 10,000 journeys per annum. This investment marks an important step in Wincanton’s long-standing

relationship with IKEA, which has seen the Wincanton Group provide a range of services to the furniture retailer since 2017. Wincanton’s investment also forms part of the Group’s wider commitment to reach net-zero emissions across the business by 2040.

Carl Moore, MD of eFulfilment at Wincanton, commented: “At

Wincanton, we want to be the leading provider of net-zero supply chain solutions for our customers and partners. As part of this, we are committed to investing in technology that develops the resilience and efficiency of our customers’ operations and supports their efforts to achieve their strategic sustainability goals. Our multimillion-pound investment in

the latest electric vehicle technology for IKEA is a great example of this in action. We’re proud to be delivering this for an important customer and we look forward to our continued collaboration.”

Carlos Rodrigues, Managing Director of Renault Trucks UK and Ireland added: “We are delighted that one of the UK’s leading supply chain partners has selected Renault Trucks as part of this hugely significant investment in electric vehicles to provide home delivery services for IKEA.

“As a pioneer of electric mobility and a champion of sustainable transport, Renault Trucks shares Wincanton’s drive for a net zero future, and we look forward to more organisations decarbonising their fleets, acting now in the urgent fight against climate change.”

New DAF Electric Truck Assembly plant officially opened

DAF’s new assembly plant for battery electric trucks has been officially opened by Micky Adriaansens, the Dutch minister of Economic Affairs and Climate.

The new facility has been commissioned at DAF’s main production site in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and will be instrumental in the further development of the company’s leading position in providing sustainable transport solutions. The new DAF Electric Truck Assembly plant covers an area of 5,000 m2 and includes two subassembly lines for the preparation of the battery packs as well as the Electric Drive Module, consisting of the front battery pack, high voltage junction box and electrified auxiliaries. These key components as well as the e-motor with integrated gearbox are installed onto the vehicle on the main assembly line which is almost 150metres long.

DAF has built its DAF Electric Truck Assembly plant for the production of its latest generation of battery electric trucks. The New DAF XD

and XF Electric are available in a range of configurations. These are powered by PACCAR e-Motors and equipped with battery packs of 2 up to 5 strings (210 to 525 kWh). The modular approach allows the trucks to be tailored precisely to customer requirements and needs. Full electric ranges of up to 500 kilometres are possible making 1,000 ‘zero emission’ kilometres

achievable with careful planning of routes and recharging. With fast charging of up to 350 kW, battery packs can be charged to 80% of their capacity in only 45 minutes. Production of quality validation trucks is about to start with series production of customer vehicles planned from the summer. DAF expects production to increase to thousands of vehicles per

annum in the near future, in line with the increasing demand for fully electric trucks.

Micky Adriaansens, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy: “DAF has been a leading player in the manufacture of trucks for many years and is currently playing a prominent and innovative role in the development of electric trucks. The transition to cleaner products and production methods is important. Not only for the environment but also to ensure that the Netherlands retains its competitive edge. This new factory for battery electric trucks is a shining example of that ambition.”

“The commissioning of the new DAF Electric Truck Assembly plant represents another important milestone on the road to an even cleaner future”, stated Harald Seidel, DAF Trucks’ president. “To support our customers in the transition to zero emission road transport, we go further than delivering class-leading full electric vehicles. Our comprehensive package includes a broad range of charging solutions, advice on planning of routes and charging, and the provision of dedicated training for drivers to get the best out of the vehicles.”

DSV enables customers to reduce emissions with decarbonisation solutions

DSV has invested in large quantities of sustainable fuel in order to provide customers with decarbonisation solutions via its new “book and claim” solution. The solution gives DSV’s customers easy access to certified sustainable fuels, enabling the reduction of the carbon footprint of their supply chains, regardless of the mode of transport.

Transport is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels and accounts for a substantial and growing portion of global CO2 emissions. A switch from fossil energy to electricity and sustainable fuels is critical to the ability of the transport sector to significantly reduce its climate impact. By investing in sustainable fuels for each mode of transport, DSV becomes one of the first transport and logistics companies to provide a book and claim solution that utilises the respective sustainable fuels for air and sea globally and road freight within Europe.

“DSV is committed to supporting our customers with a range of products to help reduce the carbon footprint of their supply chains, and I am very proud that we can now add our book and claim solution to this list. Sustainable fuels are a key component of DSV’s ongoing strategy to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate the climate impact of transport and logistics,” says Jens Bjørn Andersen, Group CEO, DSV. Replacing conventional fossil fuels with sustainable fuel alternatives can reduce

CO2emissions by approximately 80-90%. But the market for sustainable fuels is still in its infancy and can be difficult to navigate.

DSV’s book and claim provides a solution to the challenges that many of its customers face when trying to purchase sustainable fuels as part of their supply chain decarbonisation strategies. DSV takes care of finding the right producers, ensuring that the fuel is produced in accordance with guidelines and standards. Collaborating with the customer, DSV calculates the CO2 emissions from the specific shipments and transport modes, and then allocates the appropriate volume of sustainable fuels required to decarbonise the customers shipment. Passing on the ownership of the CO2 reductions to the customer, DSV ensures that the CO2 saved by the allocation of sustainable fuel can then be accounted for within the customer’s CO2reports.

DSV’s book and claim solution has been developed based on the latest industry guidance and Science Based Target initiative

principles. The process is verified by a thirdparty auditor and documented across the value chain, and customers will receive a declaration to validate their emission reductions.

Sustainable fuels

While seeking to leverage the full potential of sustainable fuels, the transport and logistics industry still faces several challenges. Costs remain higher than fossil fuels, availability is limited to specific geographies, and further investment is required to increase production levels.

Jens Bjørn Andersen believes that further investment can help drive further adoption of sustainable fuels within the industry: “Recognising our role as one of the world’s leading transport and logistics companies, DSV is well placed to help drive the adoption of sustainable fuels and in turn support the development of a critical solution to help achieve emission reductions within the transportation sector. This is an important consideration for DSV as we continue to play a role in shaping the green transition in our industry.”

Jens Bjørn Andersen continues: “Our customers are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint and continuing to offer new services that align with their needs goes hand in hand with meeting our own sustainability objectives.”

Trialling greener fuels to help build the sustainable transport network of the future

HVO, a renewable diesel replacement, is produced using vegetable oils and fats, and has the potential to be a direct alternative to traditional diesel currently used in many rail maintenance vehicles and existing diesel locomotives.

For Iarnród Éireann, trialling HVO as a diesel alternative is a key milestone in its ambitious decarbonisation plan, essential to building the sustainable transport network of the future and meeting the Government’s target of a 51% reduction in carbon emissions for the transport sector by 2030.

If the trials are successful, the use of HVO for Iarnród Éireann vehicles will mean 90% less carbon emissions on HVO fuelled vehicles when compared to diesel, and potentially saying farewell to the use of traditional diesel to power corporate vehicles and diesel locomotives, subject to wider successful trials. The trial started with fuelling an on-track ballast cleaning machine with a 75% diesel, 25% HVO fuel mix and the machine operated normally without any performance issues. The blend of HVO is now being increased and performance continually appraised. Ultimately, the intention is that the machine will be operated with 100% HVO and demonstrate no adverse outcomes. Subject to a successful trial, other maintenance vehicles will then be converted to HVO fuel.

The three on track ballast maintenance vehicles being used in this trial account for approximately 45% of the annual on track machine fuel usage, consuming 61,500 litres of diesel in 2022. The transition of these three vehicles alone to HVO would result in a carbon emission saving of 148,500kg CO2 eq per

annum compared to continued use of diesel. In addition, Iarnród Éireann is currently in discussions with fuel companies to undertake a rail HVO trial on some existing diesel locomotives.

Other initiatives

The HVO trial is in addition to various other decarbonisation initiatives being carried out by Iarnród Éireann currently:

• The planned trebling of the electrified network under the DART+ Programme is key to reaching 2030 decarbonisation goals. Longer term plans underway to extend this further ultimately seeing electrification of some of the major national rail lines.

• Delivery of new rolling stock as part of a 10-year framework agreement with rail manufacturer Alstom to supply up to 750 new rail carriages under the DART+ Fleet project, will mean Iarnród Éireann have the ability to retire older diesel fleet, subject to the relevant funding approvals and critical infrastructure upgrades being achieved

• A B7 bio-fuel blend has recently been rolled out for the existing diesel rail fleet,

Ford Announces Three-Year

with further plans in progress to use of B20 or higher, subject to successful trials, cost considerations and fuel availability.

• Trials are underway to modify the existing Intercity fleet engines, including gearbox / transmission upgrades and hybrid components and battery packs.

• Works are ongoing to develop a fleet specification to replace the existing Enterprise fleet

• Green Hydrogen is also being considered as a fuel source with an ongoing project underway to convert two locomotives to Hydrogen fuel for trial operations on Tara Mines freight trains.

• Review underway of Iarnród Éireann’s building stock to establish the potential for local renewable energy generation through the installation of solar panels. Depending on the outcome of initial case studies, this could be rolled out across the network on a phased basis, subject to funding, with a view to harnessing renewable energy to help contribute to the company’s electricity usage.

• A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) consultant has been engaged to assist in procuring a partner to enter into a Power Purchase agreement with to support sustainability ambitions

• Ongoing building stock assessment to establish the energy upgrades required to improve existing building energy ratings typically from BER-G to BER-B/C

• Trials of HVO in our road fleet are underway, with an aim to transition all vehicles to electric or HVO.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell E-Transit Trial

Ford is spearheading research into the potential for hydrogen as an on-board energy source for its acclaimed E-Transit.

The project will establish if hydrogen fuel cell technology can deliver more zero-emission range to heavy-use E-Transit customers travelling high mileages, with maximum loads, ancillary equipment such as chillers and with limited charging opportunities in the working shift. Part funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), Ford’s consortium of six automotive technology leader and fleet operator partners will help to determine the supporting hydrogen refuelling infrastructure required.

Ford Pro, the company’s commercial vehicle (CV) and services division, will use the pilot to expand its conversion expertise, supported by engineers and E-Transit specialists from Dagenham and the company’s nearby Dunton Technical Centre, in Essex.

Tim Slatter, chair of Ford in Britain, said: “Ford believes that the primary application of fuel cells could be in its largest, heaviest CVs to ensure they are emission-free, while satisfying the high daily energy requirements our customers’ demand.

“Ford has an unmatched history in the commercial vehicle sector with the indomitable Transit, and we are excited to be exploring new ways to make clean deliveries an option for even our hardest working vans on the road.”

Ford’s hydrogen fuel cell E-Transit project with the APC will validate the vehicle’s business case by linking Ford expertise as 57-year UK van market leader with fuel cell powertrain experts and fleet operators including Ocado Retail. Other partners on the project are bp, capturing

hydrogen usage and infrastructure requirements; Cambustion, testing the fuel cell system; Viritech, designing hydrogen storage systems; and Cygnet Texkimp, providing the pressure vessels’ carbon fibre tooling.

A low-volume test fleet of eight fuel cell Ford E-Transits will run for six-month periods over the threeyear project to 2025. Test fleet data will provide insights into the total cost of owning and operating a large van, with increased range and operating hours to match its diesel-powered equivalent and without the need to charge.

The prototype Ford E-Transits will be fitted with a high-power fuel cell stack, in conjunction with significant hydrogen storage capability, optimised for safety, capacity, cost, and weight. An important project element will evaluate efficient and viable recycling for end-of-life components.

Claims That Lack of Government Fiscal Support Hampering EV Uptake

If the logistics sector is to decarbonise effectively, in line with the government’s 2050 net zero deadline, more support will be needed to enable operators to do so, according to a new report by business group Logistics UK.

The organisation’s Electric Vehicle Report 2023 demonstrates that factors including a lack of fiscal support and an inadequate public charging network are having a significant impact on the confidence of operators to invest in electric vehicles (EVs).

In 2022, EVs represented 0.9% of the UK’s van fleet, up from 0.3% in 2019. And while the majority of the businesses surveyed for the report – 62% – plan to have decarbonised their van fleets by 2030, significant barriers remain that prevent the uptake needed ahead of the deadlines.

David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, comments: “The logistics sector is fully aware of its responsibilities to decarbonise and is keen to do so. However, with respondents reporting wide ranging costs to upgrade their energy supplies to depots –

between £100,000 and over £1 million – a lack of meaningful scrappage schemes, acquisition costs on the rise and volatile energy prices, it is an uphill battle that cannot continue without increased support from government. Our industry operates on very narrow margins of around 1% and with significant inflationary pressures, increased wage bills and the rise in total road vehicle operating costs, logistics businesses need supportive fiscal measures to be able to upgrade their fleets and energy supplies without having to pass on increased costs to customers.”

With all respondents citing energy supply as their top priority, the business group is also calling for a fair and equitable approach to funding depot electricity connection.

“Significant frustration was expressed by our members who

regularly use current public chargepoints, with respondents reporting difficulties in finding available EV chargepoint spaces and many encountering broken or inoperable chargers. With further issues surrounding the suitability of existing charging facilities for commercial vehicles, Logistics UK is calling for an EV charging and refuelling infrastructure roadmap to be prioritised. This must be designed in collaboration with operators, backed with clear guidance and incentives for local authorities. A significantly accelerated rollout of public charging infrastructure that is fully accessible to commercial vehicles, with clear milestones for minimum levels of suitable chargepoint provision across the country, must be an urgent priority for government if our industry is to meet its

net zero priorities by 2050.”

The cost and availability of new electric vehicles is also a concern for the logistics sector, with long order deadlines and no viable scrappage schemes putting heavy cost burdens on businesses, particularly SMEs. “The lifecycle of a vehicle is carefully worked into any logistics business’ budget, to ensure continuity while keeping costs down. Our members should not be expected simply to write off the cost of any vehicles they operate – which could run to thousands of pounds for every operator: a supportive scrappage scheme should be in place to ensure that logistics businesses can stay on the roads without incurring further, punitive costs.” Logistics UK’s Electric Vehicle Report is available at: www.logistics.org. uk/research-hub/reports/ev-report

Volta Trucks celebrates starting series production of the all-electric Volta Zero

Volta Trucks has confirmed the start of production of the 16-tonne all-electric Volta Zero at Steyr Automotive, the company’s partner in contract manufacturing, in Steyr, Austria.

Following the Design Verification and Production Validation prototypes started in 2022, the first series production customer-specification vehicles have now entered the production line. The initial batch of vehicles will be used for the Volta Zero Driving Experience Programme. This test drive programme, where customers will be loaned a truck for an extended period, will allow fleet operators to understand how the production-specification all-electric medium-duty truck will integrate into their operations. Following the start of production, the trucks produced will undergo rigorous and extensive quality assurance and testing, with the first trucks ordered by customers expected to be dispatched in Q3, 2023.

Volta Trucks welcomed Leonore Gewessler, the Austrian Minister of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology to the manufacturing facility in Steyr recently to witness the significant milestone of the final preparations for the start of production of the all-electric Volta Zero.

New Hybrid Ferry ‘P&O Pioneer’ Docks at DP World Limassol For Bunkering

The industry leading P&O Pioneer arrived late March for bunkering, as it makes its way towards Dover, where it is expected to become fully operational on the English Channel route to Calais. The vessel’s first trip to its new home has been aided by DP World’s vast global network of terminals allowing it to dock in one of its own terminals where it will be fully serviced by various specialist teams from within the global firm’s group of companies. DP World’s integrated services will provide berthing, bunkering, and marine services while the vessel is docked at Limassol. Unifeeder and P&O Maritime Cyprus will be responsible for bunkering and marine operations, while DP World Limassol terminal operators will be

in charge of berthing the vessel while it remains at the port.

The Pioneer is set to be the world’s largest double-ended hybrid ferry with two bridges meaning there is no need for it to turn around in ports, saving fuel on every roundtrip. Forecasts anticipate that P&O Pioneer will deliver a 40% reduction in carbon emissions on the Dover-Calais route from its first day in service, making it the most sustainable ferry ever to sail between Britain and the Continent and a true leader in advancing the UK maritime sector’s journey towards net zero.

Peter Hebblethwaite, CEO of P&O Ferries, said: “The delivery of P&O Pioneer is an important step for P&O Ferries, and one that will bring advanced sustainable technology to the Dover-Calais crossing. We

are excited to offer our passengers and freight customers the chance to experience this state-of-theart new ferry on our busiest route, which is also one of the UK’s most important connections with the continent of Europe.

“Last summer we carried more than one million passengers on this route and are looking forward to an exciting summer ahead with the first of our two new ships.”

The Fusion Class vessel allows P&O Ferries to cut fuel use on each crossing, as it is propelled by a combination of fuel and battery power. Reductions in fuel usage and emissions are delivered by the hybrid system by allowing the Pioneer to operate from its Energy Storage System while manoeuvring or in port and is designed to have the capacity to become fully

carbon neutral in the future. The modular design of the ship allows for modifications to welcome developing technology and as more charging stations are brought in at ports, current generators on the vessel can be removed and replaced with batteries.

The P&O Pioneer is the first of two identical purpose-built “Fusion Class” sister-ships ordered for the Dover – Calais route, both of which have been registered in Cyprus. The second ship, P&O Liberte, is expected to join in service towards the end of 2023. Various special guests and dignitaries were at the terminal to celebrate the milestone occasions including delegations from the Cyprus Ports Authority, Port and Marine Police, and other high officials and local partners, along with the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Shipping Mrs. Marina Hadjimanolis.

Lord Mayor ‘Casts Spear’ at Dublin Port

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy has performed the annual ‘Casting of the Spear’ into Dublin Bay, one the most important symbolic occasions on the Dublin Port calendar. In the process, she confirmed her title as Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port, upholding the memory of a 535-year-old tale.

In 1488, Lord Mayor of Dublin Thomas Mayler rode on horseback out to the city’s boundaries, facing bitter rain and fierce winds. Braving these elements, Lord Mayor Mayler brandished a spear, which he vaulted out into the sea as he went. Each casting of his spear marked a point on Dublin’s eastward boundary, the distance of which into the Irish Sea was determined by the Lord Mayor’s aim and strength. More than half a millennium later, the face of Dublin Port has changed considerably. Today, it carries nearly two-thirds of all port traffic on the island of Ireland. Beneath all this activity lie the marks of Thomas Mayler cast out when Ireland’s trading relationship with the rest of the world was still in relative infancy.

To commemorate this event, Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy cast a spear of her own into Dublin Bay, her first official act as Honorary Admiral of the Port. Modern times have seen successive Lord Mayors take to the water at Dublin Port to earn their honorary title, which they retain for their period in office. “It is my great pleasure to be confirmed as Honorary Admiral of the Port of Dublin,” Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy said, “This ritual has fascinated me for several years. A connection to these colourful aspects of our past remains of great cultural value to all Dubliners. Dublin Port remains ever more vital to our commercial and cultural life in the city

and beyond, and I wish it every success in its Masterplan projects over the coming years.”

Dublin Port CEO Barry O’Connell commented at the ceremony: “I would like to thank Lord Mayor Conroy for her participation in this ceremony and for her continued support of Dublin Port. This is a tradition I’m very proud to continue, one which emphasises the strong links between port and city and the importance of history and culture to our local community.

“It’s astounding to think, with all our advancements in engineering today, that the original boundary of the city was set by one person casting a spear into the sea. We’re currently in the process of developing a range of paths for cyclists and pedestrians running 5.5km across the Poolbeg Peninsula and 16km across the north side of the Liffey. These should allow Dubliners to look out over the full scope of this boundary set by a previous Lord Mayor over 500 years ago.”

Two new Stena Line ships to boost freight capacity on Belfast–Heysham route

Stena Line is constructing two new bespoke freight ferries for its expanding Belfast-Heysham freight service. The multi-million pound investment will significantly increase freight capacity on the route.

Each of the two new 147-meter vessels has been designed to maximise freight volumes and will provide 2,800 lane meters of capacity which is an 80% increase on current ship capacities. The new vessels, the first of which is due to enter service on the route in autumn 2025, will be equipped to carry 12 passengers and 26 crew.

The ‘New Max’ vessels will be able to operate on methanol fuel. Stena Line is currently working closely with the supply chain of methanol and has secured future volumes of e-methanol to fulfil its strategic ambition of shifting to renewable fuels and cutting 30% of its CO2 emissions by 2030.

Future proofing of the new vessels for electrification will also be another priority during construction providing in-built technologies that can take advantage of both battery propulsion and shore power, where this is available.

The unique tidal systems prevailing in Heysham can be challenging, so each vessel will be fitted with a bespoke marine technology configuration making it more resilient to the prevailing weather conditions. Three bow thrusters will provide optimum manoeuvrability and reliability and a specially designed engine/ propeller configuration will further enhance berthing capability in extreme weather.

Paul Grant, Stena Line Trade Director said: “This is very significant day for Belfast – Heysham freight traffic. By adding an extra 80% capacity to the route, Stena Line has responded to growing demands from customers.

“We have operated a very popular service on Belfast-Heysham for several years now but

with restricted capacity it has been challenging to meet increased market growth. With the extra capacity, we will now be able to significantly enhance our service on this route and complement our Birkenhead, Cairnryan and Holyhead services.”

Joe O’Neill, Chief Executive of Belfast Harbour, said: “We are delighted to welcome the announcement by Stena Line that two new vessels will support the increased volume of RoRo traffic moving through Belfast Harbour.

We share Stena Line’s ambitions to meet increased market growth and exceed customer expectations and will continue to support them at this exciting time for the Belfast-Heysham freight route”.

Rosslare Europort Welcomes major investment into Port Facilities

Iarnród Éireann, the owner and operator of Rosslare Europort, welcomes the announcement of the awarding of a tender to significantly upgrade the facilitates at Rosslare Europort by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe.

These upgrade works are necessary to provide permanent Brexit infrastructure at Rosslare Europort to ensure compliance with EU Customs, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) and official food controls legislation, thereby providing protection for the EU single market.

The proposed terminal seven development at Rosslare, includes the redevelopment of the existing site and the demolition of a

number of existing buildings to facilitate the construction of a new border control post (BCP) consisting of a number of new buildings and associated external site infrastructure.

The terminal seven facility will facilitate the processing and exit routes from the passenger and freight ferries that use Rosslare Europort.

The OPW has developed the

Rosslare project on behalf of the three agencies conducting checks and controls: the Revenue Commissioners; the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine; and the Department of Health/HSE.

Along with 58 weekly UK services, the port now also operates over 36 services between Rosslare and Bilbao, Cherbourg, La Havre, Dunkirk and Zeebrugge. It is now the only port in Europe to have the 3 largest RoRo brands

operating services collectively. Overall freight in the past two years has grown cumulatively by 53% with a 398% increase in continental trade. There has also been a return to pre-covid passenger numbers and Port management are expecting one of its strongest ever summers for passenger and tourism business, reflected by the moves by the port’s shipping customers.

Speaking after the announcement, Glenn Carr, Director of Commercial Business Units, Iarnród Éireann said:

“I am delighted that this tender has been awarded. The proposed works will greatly enhance the customer experience at Rosslare Europort for our customers and will ensure that as the Port continues to grow we will have the necessary infrastructure in place to futureproof the Port for generations to come”

Webfleet collaborates with Ford to offer integrated telematics solution

Ford has joined Webfleet’s OEM.connect partner programme. Ford passenger cars and vans with line fitted connectivity are ready to connect with the Webfleet service platform, eliminating the need for after-market hardware installations. This integrated solution makes it faster, easier and cheaper for fleet managers to utilise telematics technology.

With OEM.connect, Ford vehicles can transmit vehicle data directly to Webfleet, the award-winning fleet management solution. All that is needed to connect the vehicles is the vehicle identification number (VIN). Webfleet uses this valuable OEM data to provide clear, actionable insights that support fleet managers to maximise fleet performance, reduce operating costs and encourage green and safe driving while assuring data security with an ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certified service.

“We are happy to welcome Ford

to our OEM.connect programme and offer an integrated telematics solution to our joint customers,” says Taco van der Leij, Vice President of Webfleet Europe. “This cooperation underlines how important telematics data is for fleets and how pooling expertise will accelerate and improve the application of this technology”. With OEM.connect, Ford passenger car and van customers can access the standard Webfleet applications, including fleet performance reporting, trip data, GPS tracking and fuel consumption, helping to streamline their operations. Instant notifications around vehicle diagnostics, such as tyre pressure warnings, mean the fleet’s health status can be monitored in real time, enabling fleet managers to keep their drivers safe and minimise vehicle downtime. All vehicle data is displayed in the Webfleet interface and can also be accessed from anywhere via the Webfleet mobile app.

FUSO CELEBRATES START OF PRODUCTION OF THE NEXT GENERATION eCANTER

Following its European premiere at the IAA Transportation in Hanover in September past, Daimler Truck subsidiary FUSO has been celebrating the start of production of the all-electric light truck in Europe, as Export & Freight’s Phil Eaglestone reports from a special event at the Mitsubishi FUSO Europe (“MFTE”) production plant at Tramagal in Portugal.

The ‘Made in Europe’ occasion brought together company representatives and guests from the world of politics and business to celebrate the first Next Generation eCanter from European production running off the assembly line, with more than 50 percent of the electric truck’s components coming from over 90 different European suppliers. During our visit we had the opportunity to experience the new vehicles at first hand following a factory tour, with an exclusive driving event on the Autódromo do Estoril and the surrounding public roads – and we also heard Karl Deppen, CEO Daimler Truck Asia, and Arne Barden, CEO MFTE, announce another impressive milestone for the Tramagal plant with the 250,000th FUSO Canter produced on site; the MFTE plant in Tramagal has been rolling out the FUSO eCanter since 1980.

Commented Arne Barden: “The MFTE team is proud to build the iconic FUSO Canter here

at Tramagal meanwhile in its fifth generation. Thank you to the highly dedicated team who managed the ramp-up of the Next Generation eCanter with flying colours.” Since the launch of the eCanter in 2017, FUSO, the Japanese subsidiary of Daimler Truck, has been considered a pioneer and frontrunner in electric trucks and has been working consistently to implement sustainable transport solutions. There are now over 550 FUSO eCanter in customer operation in Europe, Japan and the United States, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. The total distance covered by the global eCanter fleet in all-electric and thus locally emission-free mode is now around eight million kilometres - equivalent to about 200 circumnavigations of the globe. The Next Generation eCanter is now taking this success story to a new level. Production of the all-electric light truck already started in the first quarter at the sister plant

in Kawasaki, Japan. Kawasaki delivers the FUSO Next Generation eCanter in Japan as well as in all other non-European markets worldwide. In Europe, sales of the FUSO Next Generation eCanter will initially start in 17 markets (France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Greece and Poland).

In order to meet customer requirements even better, FUSO has made several adjustments to the Next Generation eCanter. While the previous electric truck was exclusively available as a 7.49-tonner with a wheelbase of 3,400 millimetres, customers now have the choice of six wheelbases between 2,500 and 4,750 millimetres and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 4.25 to 8.55 tons. The load capacity of the chassis is up to 5 tons. The Next Generation eCanter is powered either by a 110 kW (variants with a gross vehicle weight of 4.25 and 6 tons) or 129 kW (variants with a gross vehicle weight of 7.49 and 8.55 tons) electric motor with an optimized driveline and 430 Nm of torque; the maximum speed is 89 km/h (electronically limited). Depending on the wheelbase, three different battery packs are available: S, M and L. The batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell

NEWS 62 EXPORT&FREIGHT WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM

technology. These are characterized above all by a long service life and more usable energy. The battery pack in the S variant has a nominal capacity of 41 kWh and enables a range of up to 70 kilometres. In the M variant, the nominal capacity is 83 kWh and the range is up to 140 kilometres. The L variant, as the most powerful package, offers a nominal capacity of 124 kWh and a range of up to 200 kilometres. This is far more than the distance usually covered per day in light distribution traffic. Recuperation can increase the range even further, which at the same time minimizes charging breaks. By comparison: Untilnow the eCanter has only had a battery option with a nominal capacity of 81kWh and a range of up to 100 kilometres. As far as battery charging is concerned, the Next Generation eCanter is compatible with all main voltages in the major markets. The charging unit supports charging with both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC).

The Combined Charging System CCS is the charging standard, and charging is possible at up to 104 kW. DC fast charging from 20 to 80 percent of capacity is possible in approximately 24 (S), 26 (M) and 39 minutes (L), depending on the battery pack; AC charging (11 and 22 kW) takes between around four and six hours, depending on the battery pack.

PIONEER IN SUSTAINABILITY

As part of its overall ecological strategy, the MFTE plant in Tramagal has already successfully reduced its CO2 emissions on a step-by-step basis over the past few years, and by the end of 2022, balance sheet CO2-neutrality in production has been implemented. In order to reach this milestone, MFTE has among others continuously expanded the use of renewable energy sources and completed the conversion to green power sources.1,200

solar panels on the hall roofs produce up to 350 megawatts of electricity per year. Future targets are to produce up to 600 megawatts of electricity. In addition to expanding photovoltaic systems, the plant is also testing technologies for the local production of green hydrogen. Reducing water consumption is another measure in the field of sustainability the site is focusing on: Its own new water treatment plant already treats over 60 percent of process water and returns it to the production cycle. At the same time, an optimized rainwater collection system is in the works for more sustainable irrigation of the green areas. Mitsubishi FUSO Europe employs around 500 people in Tramagal. The company is the largest employer in the region. From Portugal, the vehicles go to 32 European countries as well as Morocco. Mitsubishi FUSO Truck Europe is a major exporter and Portugal’s third-largest vehicle manufacturer.

FORD PRO INTRODUCES ALL-NEW WILDTRAK X AND TREMOR MODELS

Ford Pro has revealed the new Ranger Wildtrak X and Ranger Tremor – two exciting off-road focused models for the best-selling pickup’s most comprehensive line-up ever in Europe.

Targeting customers who require enhanced capability in challenging off-road conditions, both models feature a substantially reworked chassis with unique suspension upgrades including advanced Bilstein dampers as standard. Off-road focused driver assistance systems

provide enhanced confidence, while the two new Ranger variants possess a rugged new style that reflects their prowess in tough conditions.

The introduction of Ranger Wildtrak Xand Tremor follows Ranger’s best-ever sales performance in Europe last year. A record market share of

44.9 per cent and year-on-year share growth of 18 per cent capped eight consecutive years of segment leadership. Order books for both new models open from March 2023, with deliveries set from August 2023.

Ranger Wildtrak X builds on the Wildtrak model with a 26 mm ride height increase and 30 mm wider track width for sure-footedness on rugged terrain. Standard Bilstein highperformance position sensitive dampers provide the right amount of damping force throughout their travel to enhance off-road ability without compromising on-road performance. An uprated heavy-duty power

steering system and a protective steel bash plate deliver even more confidence off-road.

Standard new off-road technologies include Trail Turn Assist, which uses brake-based torque vectoring to reduce turning radius by up to 25 per cent when tight turns are needed. Trail Control1operates in a similar way to cruise control: the driver can select a speed below 32 km/h and the vehicle will

NEWS WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM 64 EXPORT&FREIGHT

automatically manage acceleration and braking to maintain the selected speed while the driver concentrates on steering through difficult terrain. Rock Crawl mode – previously only available on Ranger Raptor – calibrates the throttle response, traction control and gearshift schedule for optimum slow-speed, controlled crossing of uneven and rocky terrain.

Ford’s proven 2.0-litre EcoBlue bi-turbo diesel engine powers all Wildtrak X models, producing 500 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm and 205 PS paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. An advanced new full-time four-wheel drive system with a reassuring set-and-forget mode is standard, designed to deliver capability when and where customers need it.

RANGER TREMOR

The new Ranger Tremor is based on the hard-working Ranger XLT and shares the chassis and technology upgrades

as well as the new all-wheel drive system from Wildtrak X to suit customers who desire confident off-road ability. The revised suspension geometry helps to create a tougher, more planted stance, enhanced by the increased track and extended arch mouldings. A distinctive long-leg tubular sports bar is fitted as standard and defines

Ranger Tremor’s adventurous look, while cast aluminium side steps and exposed twin front tow hooks continue the function-led styling. Unique Boulder Grey exterior details and a darkened grille complete the model’s bold, distinctive appearance.

Ranger Tremor’s seats and floor

feature water-resistant, easilycleaned vinyl trim. An optional pre-wired overhead switch pack offers six inputs for winches, LED light bars and other equipment – which can be ordered via a Ford dealership or through the online Ford Shop.

FLEXIBLE RACK SYSTEM

Both Ranger Wildtrak X and Tremor can be specified with Ford’s innovative new Flexible Rack System. The unique feature’s folding roof rack and adjustable sliding rear load hoop allow long items to be carried above the roof rather than wedged between the tailgate and cab. This improves load security and frees up the load bed for other items. Flexible Rack System are also available as an option for Ranger Limited and Wildtrak series.

CHARGING SOLUTIONS

E-Transit Courier’s all-electric powertrain has been engineered to deliver an uncompromised driving experience for customers, including a powerful 100kW (136PS) motor and one-pedal driving capability. Full performance and range details will be confirmed closer to launch.

Ford Pro Charging offers an end-to-end solution for home, depot and public charging, including hardware installation and management software that helps to optimise the charging process. Simplified billing and administration via Ford Pro Charging software also supports businesses whose drivers take their work vehicle home, as well as streamlining public charging.

Ford Pro expects E-Transit Courier to be popular with customers who charge at home; Ford Pro Charging is targeting an 11 kW AC overnight home charge in 5.7 hours, and charging can be scheduled to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy using the in-vehicle touchscreen or depot charging software. To support efficient public charging, the vehicle offers DC fast charge capability up to 100kW. Ford expects the system to add 54 miles of range in 10 minutes, and charge from 10-80 per cent in less than 35 minutes. E-Transit Courier also comes with a year of complimentary access to the BlueOval Charge Network, which is set to include 500,000 public chargers by 2024. Customers with five or more vehicles can also benefit from one year of complimentary access to the tailored features of Ford Pro E-Telematics. The system uses live data to help maximise productivity, as well as delivering features to support effective and intuitive use of Ford Pro Charging. These include current charging status, vehicle-specific state of charge, and remaining range with customisable low range alert thresholds.

Plug and Charge enables E-Transit Courier owners to simply plug in and walk away when using compatible BlueOval Charge Network chargers. Charging begins automatically, and a bill and charge summary are sent to the owner after unplugging. To go further between charges, cloud-powered Intelligent Range aggregates data to deliver more accurate range figures.

CUSTOMER-FOCUSED DESIGN

E-Transit Courier’s all-new body design delivers increased load capacity in all dimensions. Width between the rear wheel arches is 1,220mm, enabling the compact van to carry two Euro pallets for the first time. Total cargo volume is now 2.9 m3, 26 per cent more than the outgoing model.

This can be further increased using the new load-through bulkhead feature, which enables customers to carry items such as planks or pipe over 2,600mm long. Maximum payload for the all-electric model is 700kg, with a maximum towing weight of 750kg.

The “digiboard” instrument panel contains a 12-inch digital cluster and 12-inch centre touchscreen with Ford’s latest SYNC 4 system. Subscription-based Connected Navigation can boost productivity and reduce driver workload with updates on traffic, parking, charging and local hazards. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard. An innovative, class-unique Office Pack includes a foldaway flat work surface and lighting to make using a laptop, filling in paperwork or taking a break in the cab easier and more comfortable.

Driver and cargo safety are paramount concerns for van operators and Ford Pro. E-Transit Courier sets a new benchmark in the segment with its comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems as standard. An optional further bundle includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centring and Stop & Go, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, Intersection Assist and Reverse Brake Assist for more peace of mind in urban driving.

Every E-Transit Courier features a built-in modem as standard, enabling always-on connectivity with the Ford Pro ecosystem and wireless software updates that can evolve the vehicle’s capability over time without requiring a dealer visit.
