Down Home With Exercise Queen Charlotte Mack

Charlotte Mack is celebrating her 16th year of helping TGO residents stay in shape. You’ll find her leading her loyal group of minions five days a week inside the manor or in the pavilion. Charlotte is serious about her exercise regimen and about having fun as well - the numerous photos you see on FaceBook with everyone wearing tutus is proof of that. But like everyone else, there is more to Charlotte than meets the eye, so we took a field trip to her rancho in Mims to get the full scoop. Inquiring minds can find out more on page 20.

It’s All About The Birds - And Counting Them

Leave it up to Betty Salter and Sandy Juba to find another excuse to go look for birds. This time it was the Global Bird Weekend and they went looking for birds as part of the International Conference For Women Bird Watchers. As a world wide group, they collected some impressive numbers, spotting over 7,700 bird species with over 34,000 contributers. Locally, Betty, Sandy and their friend Barb Eager put their binoculars on 34 di erent species right here in TGO and surrounding areas. For more details and a fun bird game -flock to page 33.

If you are reading this letter before 5:00 pm on Friday, then you still have time to call the CSA o ce and RSVP to attend the CSA O ce Open House and Pumpkin Carving Contest, taking place next Monday afternoon, October 31. Arrive anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 pm to enjoy this walk-through, trick-ortreat event (costumes are optional). Tour our newly-renovated CSA o ces and join us for some Halloween fun. Your tour will end in the newly-renovated Juke Box Recreation Room where you will vote on your favorite carved pumpkins on display. Call us today at 321-268-9767 to register for our pumpkin carving contest. Pumpkin carvers can win a $50 gift card to Blue Heron. The CSA o ce will be closed this Monday after 12 pm so we can focus our e orts on Open House activities beginning at 2 pm. If you have work orders or business needs in the CSA o ce, please contact us in the morning on Monday.

Renovation work at 199 Plantation bathhouse is now complete! The bathhouse features new custom tile, countertops, stalls, and plumbing fixtures. This work was completed “in-house” by our buildings team which saved us money and time without the need to deal with contractors, and their busy schedules and profit margins. I wish to thank the Buildings Committee and especially Barbara Yeager for her work to choose colors and materials during this renovation. I also want to recognize our CSA buildings team, Supervisor Guy Sampson, and his team, for the talent and hard work they demonstrated while completing this project.

We have o cially entered election season! Election Day for the State of Florida is Tuesday, November 8. Please familiarize yourself with our HOA rules for campaign signs and follow them closely. TGO will host our own election day on Monday, January 23. Odd-numbered districts for the CSA Board of Directors and ARC Directors, along with the Chairman of the Board and ARC President, will be elected by you this year. Tom Wheir has served as your CSA Chairman for four years now, and he has decided not to run again. Tom’s contributions, dedication, and integrity in the role of Chairman are beyond impressive. He has given countless hours working closely with me and the Board to champion for the improvement of our community. He led our community through the Covid-19 pandemic. Many major improvements to TGO have happened during Tom’s term, and I’m grateful for the e ort and support he has put forth to keep TGO a great place to live and work. These are big shoes to fill for sure.

I’m sure by now you’ve heard about the unfortunate break-in and vandalism at the Nature Center earlier this month. I’ve spoken to our North Brevard Sheri Commander to request an increase in random patrols at night. Recently our custodial crew has been cleaning up in the mornings after some minor vandalism in one of our bathhouses. We all play a role in keeping our community clean and safe. Please report any suspicious activity to the CSA o ce. As always, if you find yourself in an emergency situation and need the Sheri , dial 911!

Our fall days are growing shorter, and next weekend on Sunday morning, November 6 at 2:00 am we “fall back.” This is the time of year we revise our contractor hours to prevent construction work from happening in the dark. Please know that contractor hours are now o cially 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and as a reminder, we do not allow construction on Sundays or Holidays.

Also part of the Board of Directors Organization are CSA Manager Billy Specht, Architectural Review Committee Chairman Leon LeBlanc and CSA Secretary Sharon Sanford. The CSA website at www.tgocsa.org has individual biographies and contact information for each director.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on o cial bulletin boards and shown on our TV Community Channel 732. The actual meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the Plantation Manor at 10:00 am. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

CSA DUES PAYMENT

The First Quarter Maintenance Assessment for 2023 is due January 1. Please drop o your payment of $900 at the CSA O ce or mail it to: The Great Outdoors at 100D Plantation Drive, Titusville, FL 32780. You can also fill out a form to have your payment drawn directly from your bank account. The payment must be received by 5:00 pm on January 20, 2023 or there will be a $25 late fee.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meetings will be held on the following Wednesday dates at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch: November 2, November 23 and December 14.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on the Monday before an ARC meeting.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association o ce or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa. org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA o ce by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA O ce. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

Newcomers Orientation

The first Newcomer Orientation Meeting for this season will be held in the Manor on Monday, November 14, 2022 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and tra c laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergencyvehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Opening for Rules & Regulations Committee

There is an opening for owners who wish to serve on the Rules & Regulations Committee An application needs to be completed to apply for committees. It is in the CSA O ce or online on the website: www.tgocsa.org. Click on CSA Documents/Forms/Application for Committee Assignment. Fill out and turn into CSA O ce.

President’s Council Meetings

Beginning with the first meeting in October, we will meet at the CSA Pavilion on the third (3rd) Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am. The dates for the monthly meetings are: November 15, 2022; December 20, 2022; January 17, 2023; February 21, 2023; March 21, 2023; April 18, 2023. Gerri Helms is the Chairperson of this committee and Chuck Benoit is the Vice Chairperson.

The year 2023 is an Election Year for the Chairman position of both the Community Services Association Board of Directors and the Architectural Review Committee. For this reason, Election Notices will be mailed to all properties at The Great Outdoors. Included with the Election Notice will be a request form for obtaining an Absentee Ballot for those who expect to need one.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system o ers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA O ce for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Our television channel for Community Services Association and other information about The Great Outdoors can be viewed using a digital TV tuned to Channel 732 on the Spectrum Cable TV system. The TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA O ce at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. These applications are scheduled in 2022 as follows:

TruGreen is also o ering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA O ce at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. They will make additional visits on the following 2022 dates: November 10, and December 15.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay o treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets o treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

Young Guns - Country Rock Band - January 19, 2023

International touring country rock band, Young Guns, is one of the hottest country music shows in the world. They play songs from bands like Florida Georgia Line, Charlie Daniels Band, Rascal Flatts, Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Dierks Bently, George Strait, Blake Shelton, and many more legendary country artists. The show features award winning entertainer, recording artist and lead singer, Eric Sage. They have dueling electric guitars and the beautiful and talented electric fiddle/violinist Melissa Barrison plus vocalist Melody Ebner. Steve Solomon - Broadway Comedian - March 2, 2023

Steve has taken the art of impersonation, mimicry and honed it into a science. He masterfully weaves dialects and crazy characters into his stories. These tales take on a life of their own as Steve recounts memorable moments from his past and makes hysterical observations of the things we all relate to happening around us today! A native of Brooklyn, Steve grew up in the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician. As the class clown and as a very authentic sounding Chinese restaurant delivery boy, Steve learned early how to use his gift for imitating accents to his advantage.

New York Bee Gees Tribute Show - March 23, 2023

The New York Bee Gees Tribute Show is comprised of some of Long Island, New York’s most versatile and exceptionally talented players. The band includes present or former members of well known, world renown acts including Happy Together Tour, Meatloaf, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Herman’s Hermits, Enrique Iglesias and more.

Based in New York, the show has played to sell-out shows in the city. B.B. King NYC wrote, “The NY Bee Gees Tribute Show presents the most extravagant Bee Gees show a fan can experience.” The NY Bee Gees deliver songs from every decade of the Bee Gees catalog with a stunning production, powerful vocals and professional stage presence.

As a bonus, Jessie Wagner will join the New York Bee Gees to perform a great “Donna Summer Tribute!”

CharlotteMACK Down Home With

Ed was enlisted in the Air Force and the next thing they knew, they were moving to Knob Noster, MO, stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base. They stayed for three and a half years, then were o to California for two years, Germany for three years, then Ohio and finally back to Florida.

“When I was in California there were no certifications, everyone did their own thing. I was in the first fitness certification class when the governing body was formed for the purpose of certifying instructors. I took the first certification test and passed it. I am Group Exercise certified. I’m now gold certified because I’ve been certified for so long. Every two years we have to take continuing education credits in order to remain certified. I’m also certified in CPR.”

Charlotte started instructing fitness classes nearly 45 years ago, and this month she is celebrating 16 years as being an instructor here at TGO.

“Fitness just happened. I used to take a dance aerobics class. That’s when you take a song and make an aerobics dance, something for the verse, something for the break and something for the chorus, then you did the same moves for each part of the song. The lady teaching the class got sick during class and asked me to take over. The next thing I know, I had my own class. It wasn’t anything I had planned.”

And that is basically how Charlotte Mack fell in love with fitness. For nearly 45 years, this Mims, Florida native has been teaching and instructing fitness classes, eventually finding her way to The Great Outdoors.

After graduating high school, Charlotte worked for a few years as a court reporter and a legal secretary. Then during a double-date with her sister she was re-introduced to her now husband Ed - who she actually knew from junior high school. Six months later they were married.

“When we moved back to Florida, the YMCA was being renovated and had not yet opened. They were looking for two instructors, one for the morning and one for night. I became the morning instructor. Then I became the group exercise coordinator at the Y. I worked there for over 10 years. Then classes opened up at The Great Outdoors. One of the instructors I trained taught out here and when she left she asked if I would like her classes. I decided I’d like to be out here instead of at the YMCA. I’ve now been at TGO 16 years as of October 26.”

When asked about her favorite exercise she quickly answered Piyo. “I love teaching it. It’s a combination of Pilates and Yoga on steroids.”

Fitness may be her passion, but her true love is her animals, especially her horses. Cisco is a miniature pony and Remy is a quarter horse. Both are rescue animals. In addition, she has birds, dogs and cats. She lives in a beautiful home in Mims with plenty of room for her furry and feathered friends... and her gardens.

“My typical day is being up at 4:00 am, taking care of all the animals, the horses, dogs, cats and birds. I leave about 7:10 am to go to TGO, teach two classes, jump in the car, drink my protein shake and go to Harry T. Moore in Mims and teach a class there. Then I come home, take a nap, and start over with the animals and do things around the house. Saturdays are family days.

I also teach an exercise class at Parrish in their pool. It’s a joint workout, Thursdays at 4:00 and Friday mornings at 10:00. I would never have thought I would be teaching a water class!”

Charlotte currently teaches an 8:00 am class here in the Manor where, during season, there are up to 60 residents who join her. Shen then teaches a 9:00 am class in the Pavilion - this one is a little less strenuous, perfect for those who still want be active but may have some restrictions.

During Covid, her classes were shown on our TGO channel 732, which she thinks helped contribute to the increase of residents who didn’t come to her classes prior to Covid.

When asked about her favorite exercise she quickly answered Piyo. “I love teaching it. It’s a combination of Pilates and Yoga on steroids. It goes fast. I am life time certified in Piyo. I don’t think it is ever going away. I think everyone should try everything and decide what is best for them.”

For those interested in joining one of Charlotte’s classes, all you need to do is throw on some workout clothes and show up at the Manor at 8:00 or the Pavilion at 9:00. You’ll eventually want a Yoga mat and maybe some hand weights - but the most important part is that you show up.

“I love it here at The Great Outdoors,” was Charlotte’s last comment, “it is my home away from home!”

The following statement is from the Nature Center President, Dolly Akers. It was posted on the TGO Nature Center Facebook Group. Reprinted with permission.

To our valued members and those who support the Nature Center in TGO.

By now, most of you have heard that the Nature Center was vandalized on Friday, October 14, 2022.

There was a lot of damage. The glass in the door from the porch was broken to gain access into the main building. Also, the window to the left of the main entrance door was broken. There is glass and blood scattered throughout the building.

A person was found sleeping in the conference room. The police were called and the person was arrested.

Our insurance provider has been notified and we will be working with them to determine the next step toward cleaning the building. Please be patient. This may take some time to resolve.

The main drive to the Nature Center has been taped off and we ask that everyone not cross through the barricade.

Thank you so much for your continued support. We try to provide our members and the TGO community valuable information so we can all learn and live "In Harmony With Nature."

The Great Gatsby night at the Blue Heron was another big hit. Sammy and Tammy were spinning the hits while Charlie Shulby was escorted by TGO’s best flapper girls - Karan and Mo!

The Nature Center fun day turned out to be a huge success. Betty Salter and Sandy Juba arranged for a great line up of nature influencers. Nancy Clark showed up with a baby squirrel, Sharon Maloney helped Sandy with renewing and taking new memberships. TGO’s Mike O’Neal brought Dylan and Madison Conley to enjoy the fun while Martha Henderson demonstrated how to use a Whale prop!

Faith is a very happy, playful, energetic Husky mix. She will be three on December 1. She loves to entertain herself and others with all of her toys and she loves running and playing at the dog park! She makes Debbie and Dennis Grondin smile every day!

What is a Fire Break?

What is a FIRE BREAK? It could be the very thing that saves your property and your life when a Wildfire is relentlessly advancing on TGO. It can be man-made or natural. The St. John’s River, running from south to north, qualifies as a natural firebreak for a wildfire rushing through the grasslands and forest west of the river and west of TGO. In a similar way, the Addison Canal, running west to east, through part of TGO, could qualify as a man-made firebreak. It was dug 100 years ago in an ill-fated attempt to drain the “swamp.” Both these firebreaks could conceivably work together to protect the north and west sides of our community.

A FIRE BREAK can be a paved road or a dirt trail. It can be an area prepared in advance by prescribed burning or cutting of vegetation, plowing, and trimming, as demonstrated by our intrepid Trail Maintenance Volunteers. CSA has a role in this with cut debris removal. Florida Forestry Service and St. John’s Water Management District can be helpful in identifying target areas for Breaks, as well as targeting Grant Money and heavy equipment for cutting and removal.

Any interruption in natural vegetation across the line of travel of a wildfire can result in the removal of fuel and the dying out of the wildfire. Once again the FIRE TRIANGLE can explain fuel removal as a viable strategy for control of a wildland fire.

Women Birders Global Big Day

International Conference for Women Birders Global Big Day

When it comes to birds, you need to get up pretty early to stay up with TGO’s Betty Salter and Sandy Juba. Both ladies were particpants in this year’s Global Bird Weekend - a world wide program that counts bird population throughout the world. Over 34,000 contributers in 188 countries spotted 7,717 species over a three day effort. Below is Betty’s story about her weekend with Sandy and friend, Barb Eager.

My friend Barb Eager is Chair for the International Conference for Women Birders. She loves to spend time in TGO, especially on days we can enjoy the nature here via golf cart. IC4WB (International Conference For Women Birders) decided to have members form teams and join the October Big Day on Ebird. So, Barb and I recruited Sandy Juba and the three of us decided to make it just a fun, relaxed day of observing birds. Sandy drove my golf cart, eagle-eye Barb in the passenger seat and me hanging on in back. I was in charge of reporting to Ebird. On the Ebird app you are asked to also count the individual birds, not simply list the species seen. Since I have done many Christmas bird counts, I was the likely one to deal with that.

We were determined to just enjoy the adventure. Walking out my front door we spotted two mourning doves, then driving up Sunset in the golf cart there were our four sandhill cranes. Just beyond the postal facility the other pair of sandhill cranes were resting. On the way to Sandy’s house we saw the first of the black vultures. From Sandy’s house we headed to Buck Lake adding mockingbirds, turkey vultures, boat-tailed grackles, cardinals, and red-shouldered hawks. We drove through the area adjacent to Buck Lake, adding more mocking birds, another turkey vulture and a blue jay. I went about a quarter-mile into the Betty Salter trail and could hear the yellow-rumped warblers beyond the water that crossed the trail. I could just barely see them flitting about in the oak trees.

We went to the recycle area adding more black vultures and around Lake Judy adding a great blue heron. We checked the Addison Canal on Plantation Drive and saw a snowy and a great egret, no pileated woodpecker but we did get a red-bellied woodpecker. The high water from Ian kept us o the Nature Trail, but we did check along Addison Way

and around the Nature Center. We had two more red-shouldered hawks there, but no kingfisher. At the end of Addison Way there was a plethora of wading birds across the Nature Trail and out on the firebreak. By now we have added egrets, ibis and herons. We also had turtles and gators.

We went around Dragonfly and out through the commercial area, again seeing the six sandhill cranes. More boat-tailed grackles, mourning doves and mockingbirds. Driving up and down streets, birds on every street.

The bridge was under water, but it wasn’t too deep so I continued on.

To get to the bridge on the Nature Trail, I had to walk in from Windsong. Sandy helped me count the ibis, egrets and herons gathered at the edge of the water covering the Nature Trail at the Indian Mound Trailhead. Then o I went, slowly wading through the water, watching the waters for anything I didn’t want to encounter, pausing and looking for one of the night herons and listening for the kingfisher.

The bridge was under water, but it wasn’t too deep so I continued on. No sign of the eagles, just one osprey flew by. At the Watson Trail the water was nearly to my knees. I didn’t search every tree with my binocs, but I did hear a descending whinny of a downy woodpecker. I kept an even more intent watch on the waters around me, listening for any movement or bird songs… there it was the squeaky wheel sound of the black and white warbler. Well, before I got to the library where Sandy and Barb would pick me up, I was back on dry land. Continued...

International Conference for Women Birders Global Big Day

I needed a break and we were ready for lunch, so o to the Blue Heron. During lunch we added an anhinga that was beside the lake. After lunch we cruised Oak Cove, Twin Lakes, and Fairways.

At this point Sandy had other things to do so we dropped her o , then got in the car and took a short trip through Titusville to the Merritt island National Wildlife Refuge. Birding from the car we were able to add 12 more species from I-95 to Garden Street and around the open portion of Gator Creek. The species with the most numbers counted was European Starling on the power lines.

Why do these global bird counts or the Christmas bird count that covers the western hemisphere? For me, I do it for the sheer joy of being out there! These counts give ornithologists and other scientists valuable data as to how bird populations are doing. If their numbers are declining, ecosystems are probably in trouble. This year will be the 122nd Christmas Bird Count. Check with Audubon Society for bird counts in your area. MINWR has one every December, usually on the third Monday in December.

Anyone can do a BIG Day any day anywhere, you just decide to find as many birds as you can, hoping you will find more than you ever have before or maybe more than someone else. The Global Big Day is a census that tells the health of birds throughout the world, especially as it is repeated year after year.

JUDY WILLEKE, OWNER OF TGO REALTY

The Grande Dame of TGO would certainly be Judy, having celebrated 35 years at TGO and selling the very first site in 1989 to Ray and Connie Lee on Sunset Drive. She has been a driving force of educating owners and her agents of the real estate laws, TGO rules and regulations, and protecting property values for owners. Judy and her husband, Bob, love cruising and entertaining family and friends. She is a staunch supporter of adhering to TGO’s condominium documents for protection of both buyers and sellers.

NANCY MERCHANT, BROKER

One of the first TGO Activities Directors (1991), she previously managed the Country Store before joining TGO Realty in 1999. Nancy became the Broker in 2020 and enjoys cooking, reading and working with the best staff at TGO Realty! Nancy is also the Marketing Coordinator for TGO Realty.
