Our TGO Quilters Rock!

We are fortunate to have a lot of great groups inside TGO and our TGO Quilters are a marvelous example. This year, they adopted Meals on Wheels as their charity project. For Valentine’s day, they made 150 custom place mats that Meals on Wheels delivered as a gift to their customers. This Christmas, they made over 80 quilts (YES! Eighty!) which will be distributed to deserving Titusville recipients. The Quilters all gathered last Sunday and enjoyed some homemade cookies and refreshments while they wrapped each quilt as a Christmas present. Distribution by Meals on Wheels started this past week. See more on page 31.

More Than Just a Way to Keep Your Head Warm

Davey Crockett may not agree, but the Procyon Lotor is a cute little critter. More commonly know as the Raccoon, the Procyon Lotor is prevalent throughout the state of Florida - and a common fixture here at TGO. If you leave them alone, they are usually not a problem, but feeding them (like they are your pet) can cre ate some issues. Raccoons are among the most intelligent of Florida’s wildlife, so it’s no wonder that they can easily fool you into setting out food for them or borrowing your patio to entertain all their friends.. Dear TGO Community, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! This year it feels as if we moved from hurricane season straight into holiday season. The beautiful decorations throughout TGO should put us all into the Holiday spirit. I extend a big Thank You to our Beautification’s Committee for their efforts to decorate TGO again for the holidays. This is my favorite time of year and I especially enjoy the beautiful lights and decorations hung on your homes as I travel through the community. The best thing about the holiday season is knowing that our TGO community unites to celebrate our many holiday traditions such as the TGOCC Christmas Cantata, the Christmas Golf Cart Parade, and Christmas De-Lights on Twin Lakes Drive. Evenings on Twin Lakes and Fairways Drive are so much fun this time of year.

CSA is conducting ‘critter control’ on select evenings and early mornings. Most of our efforts are focused where our TGO-owned conservation areas border our golf course property along golf course hole #9 - #10. Two senior CSA employees have been designated to perform this work. They are focused now on removing the wild hogs that are rooting and destroying turf throughout our community, in backyards and especially along the perimeter of our golf course fairways and greens. If you have any questions or concerns about hogs, please call me at the CSA office.

Improvement projects continue throughout our community; some were just completed this week. At the request of our community safety committee, the buildings team added two stop signs this week at the exits from The Manor and Blue Heron onto Hospitality Way. Our grounds team removed a wooden bridge on Hole #16 that was damaged during the hurricane and replaced it with a land-bridge. Jordan and Shane were finally able to restore power to our irrigation pump after some hurricane damage, and our pump is serving our golf course and community again.

We again find ourselves with some key vacancies at Blue Heron Restaurant. I’ve been spending much of my time there these past weeks, supporting the staff’s extra efforts and greeting our guests. Beth Garrison is our long-time bartender, and she has stepped up into an acting manager role while I search for a new food and beverage manager. Line cook Matt Neely has stepped up as Lead Cook. Both are doing a stellar job of operating the restaurant and performing the many holiday parties this time of year. We have not missed a beat, we continue to operate seven days a week, 13 hours day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you see Beth or Matt, please encourage their extra efforts and leadership.

Spending time at Blue Heron has allowed me to see how our community has a different kind of relationship with our restaurant staff, not a typical, static transactional relationship like in most restaurants, but one where our diners come often and treat the staff like family. We offer a great place to work, with appreciative customers and competitive wages. Skilled restaurant employees are very hard to find right now; they come and go quickly for many different reasons. As I talk to other restaurant owners and operators locally, they are expe riencing the same challenges, and some are forced to reduce their operating hours. Thank you for your patience with our Blue Heron team as there may be peak times when your food will take extra time to prepare. I will continue to work hard to find the right people to lead our Blue Heron. Our Blue Heron Service Promise to you is “Serving Fresh, High-Quality Food with Friendliness and Pride.” Our team is trained to meet this promise every day.

I wish the happiest of holidays to you all.

Sincerely,

3

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

• For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Why is Europe like a frying pan?

Steve Solomon - Broadway Comedian - March 2, 2023

Steve has taken the art of impersonation, mimicry and honed it into a science. He masterfully weaves dialects and crazy characters into his stories. These tales take on a life of their own as Steve recounts memorable moments from his past and makes hysterical observations of the things we all relate to happening around us today! A native of Brooklyn, Steve grew up in the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician. As the class clown and as a very authentic sounding Chi nese restaurant delivery boy, Steve learned early how to use his gift for imitating accents to his advantage.

Wednesday, December 14 at 9:30 am

A regular meeting of the Board of Directors will be held at Dolly Akers’ home located at 221 Harmony Lane .

ABOUT OUR TRAILS

We have nine nature trails which are designed for walking or hiking. In the nearly 12 miles of trails you can find, many different habitats supporting a diversity of flora and fauna. They were created by Nature Center volunteers and are still maintained by volunteers as trails/foot paths. Our multi use Nature Trail and the Dog Walk were created and are maintained by CSA, they are multi use trails that allow golf carts, bicycles, and pedestrians. Of the nine nature trails maintained by volunteers supported by the Nature Center in TGO, the Claire and Ernie Carlson Trail and the Betty Salter Trail are the only ones completely on CSA property. The Betty Salter Trail is maintained in cooperation with Firewise and CSA as a firebreak. CSA mows the portion that can be mowed twice a year. The rest is done by Firewise and Nature Center Volunteers. The first 58 yds of the Addison Trail and the first 40 yds of the Juba Interpretive Trail are on CSA property and all of each of them is maintained by Nature Center Volunteers. The Watson Trail that has a bald eagle’s nest in its heart is different. The first portion of it, the part that goes through a mixed forest is property of the St. Johns River Water Management District; it is an out parcel surrounded by CSA property that is a designated Conservation Easement. This trail along with Juba Interpretive, Mattila, Addison, Pisarz, Karen Earley, and Indian Mound Trails are maintained by Nature Center volunteers in cooperation with St. Johns River Water Management District. The walk through gates on these trails were purchased and installed by SJRWMD. The signs for the trails were created and donated by volunteers for the Nature Center. The Nature Trail sub committee of the BOD Infrastructure Committee is in charge of the multi use Nature Trail, the dog walk and the trail to Buck Lake. The current trail master for the Nature Center in TGO is Betty Salter. Now you know who to contact if you have questions or suggestions about any of our wonderful trails here in TGO. Betty Salter

AMERICAN ALLIGATOR– PART 1

Linda Adams used to write educational articles for the Nature Center and we are fortunate to still have many of her articles. The article below is part of the American Alligator article she wrote during the 2000 2001 season. Enjoy!

“Writing of the St. Johns River during the late 1770s, naturalist William Bartram noted "alligators were in such incredible numbers and so close together from shore to shore that it would have been easy to have walked across on their heads had the animals been harmless."

American alligators undoubtedly were numerous in Florida well into the 20th century, although never in the numbers Bartram described. However, as a result of unregulated and unrestricted harvest, the Florida alligator population had noticeably decreased by the early 1940s. Imposition of hunting restrictions in the 1940s and '50s slowed the decline, but illegal poaching during the late 1950s and '60s resulted in a further decrease in most Florida alligator populations.

Despite the complete protection of alligators under a 1962 Florida law, extensive alligator poaching continued until 1970. At that time, an amendment to the federal Lacey Act made the interstate shipment of illegally taken alligators a federal violation. This act combined with the reduced demand for alligator skins resulting from a decline in many traditional retail markets, virtually eliminated poaching. The rapid recovery of the reptiles throughout the 1970s, once they were effectively protected, suggests they endured poaching better than once thought.

Alligators live in all Florida counties but are most common in the major river drainage basins and large lakes in the central and southern portions of the state. They also can be found in marshes, swamps, ponds, drainage canals, phosphate mine setline ponds and ditches. Alligators are tolerant of poor water quality and occasionally inhabit brackish marshes along the coast. A few even venture into salt water.” (Information Source: Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission) Column Prepared by Linda Adams

Enter the Watson Trail at the gate east of the bridge on the Golf Cart Nature Trail. This is a moderately easy trail that wanders through a section of the Canaveral Marsh Tract of the St. Johns River flood plain. Enjoy the shade of pine, palm and oak hammocks. This trail is closed September 1st to March 31st. Distance 1.07 miles. Access the Diamond Spur year round, it is very wet in summer. Distance 2.3 miles. This trail is still wet from our unusually wet summer and fall. Betty Salter

Editor’s Note: Watch for announcements for Betty’s Watson Trail guided hike on the Nature Center pages of The Happenings and, if you are a Nature Center member, you will be reminded in the “Next Week With Nature” newsletter. It is a great way to learn about our local nature as Betty will share her vast knowledge with you.

Meet the Procyon Lotor

AKA - The Raccoon

There is only one raccoon (Procyonidae) species, the Procyon Lotor, in Florida. Raccoons are among the most intelligent of Florida’s wildlife.

It is found in areas with trees, including urban areas, statewide. It is gray, brown, and black with a pale brown un derside and five to eight light and dark alternate rings on its bushy tail. Its face is lighter with a black mask. Its hind legs are longer than its forelegs. It is 30-35” long with a 9-12” banded tail and weighs 10-15 pounds. Not quick, but they can reach speeds up to 15 miles per hour. Raccoons are good climbers and climb down trees headfirst.

Raccoons have incredibly delicate hands, with five long, tapered fingers and long nails. They do not have thumbs, so can’t manipulate things with one hand the way we can, but they use both forepaws together to raise and acutely manipu late objects.

Thanks to this tactile intelligence, raccoons are problem solvers that adapt quickly to cities, residential areas, and oth er man-made environments Their paws are what give them ex treme grip and allow them to climb quickly up most obstacles.

Most raccoons are not great hunters though they try catching rats, mice, and squirrels among other little animals. More often than not, they take whatever is lying around like your pet’s food, garbage, dead animals, insects and more. They do love frogs, snails, fish and other water creatures, too. They are omnivorous and opportunistic and will forage in gar bage and have displayed an uncanny ability to open coolers and other camping equipment.

These creatures look like dirty backyard outlaws, but raccoons are very clean animals. In areas they regularly frequent, they are known to wash their food in streams and even dig latrines.

Raccoons prefer wooded areas near water and natural habitats. Their preferred den preference is in the cavities of trees. In urban settings, raccoons will make their homes in empty crawl spaces, underneath porches, and within attics. It has several den sites within its home range (1 mile in diameter for males, .75 for females).

The raccoon typically sleeps in abandoned burrows, and the crooks of trees during the day, becoming active in the late afternoon and throughout the night, but may change this pat tern according to food availability.

Breeding usually occurs during December or January. The male wanders off in search of another mate. A litter of 3-4 kits is born about 60 days later. The female is very protective of her offspring.

Predators include man, dogs, bobcats, panthers, and great horned owls.

Is killing raccoons legal in Florida?

A Gun and Light at Night Permit and a hunting license are re quired to use a firearm and a light at night to take nuisance beaver, bobcat, fox, opossum, rabbit, raccoon or skunk that are causing destruction of crops and/or livestock. But, no shooting within TGO limits!

Raccoons would no longer fear you if you feed them. Some people find raccoons quite adorable and cute. One can’t help but feel sorry for it when it looks hungry so they feed it. But if you feed a raccoon, they would come back and would no longer fear you. They think they have control over you so when they feel threatened, they can get aggressive and scratch or bite you.

Furthermore, word can spread that you’re feeding rac coons so their raccoon friends might just start visiting you too. Too many raccoons in just one area can get very dangerous. If it attacks a family member or a neighbor just because you were more than willing to have them over all the time, then you probably would be wishing you never fed it at all.

Can raccoons be pets in Florida?

The state of Florida recognizes some exciting and interesting animal species as legal pets. These pets include bats, deer, New Guinea singing dogs, Asian leopard cats, marmosets, foxes, squirrels, skunks, raccoons and, be prepared for this, sloths!

28
Raccoons are primary carriers of rabies in Florida and may also carry distemper, Leptospirosis, roundworm, salmonella and tuberculosis.

TGO Canadians Parrish Medical Presentation

Monday, January 9, 2023 - 1:00 pm

At the Plantation Manor

• How can you access the Parrish services and providers available in our area?

• What steps should you take if you need hospital/ emergency care?

• What covid protocols are in place?

• What program has Parrish developed to support our TGO Canadian group?

Come and meet the Parrish liaison team so they can provide answers to these questions and any other concerns you may have about your health care while you are here in TGO. Call Judy Grant 321-567-4024 for more info.

Lynn and Gary Stains scored a great deal on their Christmas tree at the Nature Center Christmas Flea Market.

Jane Williams was caught decorating the tree in her front yard, on the corner of Bowfin, Plantation, and Dragonfly. Decorations are sparkly snowflakes and projection lights as the tree is too tall to put on lights anymore.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

This year the TGO Quilters adopted Meals on Wheels as their charity proj ect. In February, our quilters made over 150 place mats that were delivered for Valentine’s Day. For this Christmas, our quilters outdid themselves and made over 80 quilts for Meals on Wheels to deliver to deserving Titusville recipients.

If you would like to be a part of our quilting group, they meet each Thurs day at Hobbyland at 12:00 noon.

You can contact Nancy Powers at 603-209-2544 or Gayle Sampson at 651-492-0881.

And... If you have a few hours available each week, Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers. Please contact Lisa Sine at 321-639-8770 if you would like to help deliver meals.

Above: The TGO Quilters display a portion of the 80 quilts they made. Each quilt was individually wrapped for for delivery.

Firewise - Don’t Get Burned?

Burns are painful, even devastating, injuries. Burns caused by scalding liquids or steam most commonly occur in the kitchen, dining room or bathroom. Most burns fall into a classification based on their severity.

FIRST DEGREE BURNS are characterized by red, non-blistered skin. Skin will peel as these burns heal. Contact with hot liquids, brief contact with a flame, or a sunburn can be the cause a FIRST DEGREE BURN. First Aid includes soaking in cool water for five minutes, antibiotic cream application and protection with loose gauze. Avoid use of ice, cotton balls and home remedies like butter and eggs!

SECOND DEGREE BURNS are more serious. They damage deeper layers of skin and are characterized by blisters, extreme redness and soreness. First Aid includes running cool water on the burn, applying antibiotic cream to blisters, pain medication and protecting with loose gauze. Hospital treatment is required for widespread area involvement.

THIRD DEGREE BURNS are the most serious. They are full thickness skin burns, often not very painful, but potentially life threatening. Cover lightly to prevent infection and call 911! In your home, first and second degree burns are most likely to be scalding burns from hot liquids. Scalding burns are the leading cause of burn related emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Use these simple safety tips around the house to keep you and your family safe from painful and destructive burn and scalding injuries:

1. Set your home hot water heater to a temperature not over 120°F.

2. When cooking, use back burners. Keep pot handles turned toward the back of the stove.

3. Use spill-resistant mugs when drinking hot liquids.

4. Test and stir all foods before serving to assure they are cool enough to eat.

5. Avoid using tablecloths that can be pulled to spill hot food.

6. Always test bath and shower water temperatures with your hand. Make changes gradually.

7. Place a rubber mat in front of your stove to prevent slipping and falling.

8. If you are eating in a chair, use a tray with a surrounding lip to contain hot spills.

Every 25 seconds in the United States, a person is either burned or scalded!

LGA’S FALL CUP

The 2nd Annual Ladies Fall Cup competition took place Saturday and Sunday, De cember 3 and 4. The two day Ryder Cup-style event featured two teams of 18 play ers clad in Blue and Gray uniforms. Team Birdie Shotz (Blue) took the lead over the Par Tee Girls (Gray) after day one’s singles competition, but only by a slim margin. Day two’s team play saw the Birdie Shotz increase their lead early only to be overcome by a late comeback by the Par Tee Girls. When the dust settled the margin of victory for the Par Tee Girls was one single point. The final tally: 243.5 to 242.5. Pat Cook, the Par Tee Girls captain, accepted the winner’s cup for the second year in a row along with assistant Mary Laverty. Birdie Shots captain, Kathy O’ Brien, with assistant Lyn Johndrow, assembled their team for the customary serving of the victor’s dinner to their opponents in the Blue Heron. Gifts were ex changed and congratulations rendered. Thank you to all the participants for supporting and participating in one of TGO’s marquee events. - Chuck Kandt -

Your TGO CSA Patrol

Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your exercise

A lack of sunshine shouldn’t keep you inside when a walk in the dark may be just the thing to kick off or wind down your day. Don’t let the short winter days interfere with your walking practice! If you find yourself a walking in the dark, here are some tips to help keep you safe:

1. Grab a headlamp. A great way to keep your hands free and your path illuminated is by wearing a headlamp. They’re lightweight, super bright, and easy to strap onto your head or hat.

2. Add a reflector to your back. We often think about lighting our path so we can see where we’re going, but traffic approaching from behind may not be able to see you. Try wearing a reflector on your back that will catch the light from anyone approaching you from behind.

3. Gear up. Reflective vests, bands, belts and sashes will help you be seen.

4. Wear bright colors. Dark colors and darkness just don’t mix. Instead, put on some brighter colors that might stand out to any oncoming traffic that might not see you if you blend into your surroundings.

5. Walk against traffic. Just as important as it is for oncoming traffic to see you, it’s important for you to also see on coming traffic. It helps you make sure you stay in the clear in case others on the street aren’t aware of your presence.

6. Be aware. Keeping your head up and ears open while walking in the dark will help keep you safe from surprises, like other pedestrians, animals or traffic that might come out of nowhere.

As long as you follow a few safety precautions, you’ll find that nothing can stop you from getting the exercise you need to stay happy and healthy all year long. REMEMBER – We don’t have wide roads, we don’t have sidewalks, we don’t have many street lights, so PLEASE – SHARE THE ROAD SAFELY!

“Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS

“My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thorough ly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ

I have been blessed immeasurably with the opportunity to facilitate life-altering transformations that have bolstered both physical and psycho logical achievements. Most significantly, I consistently witness life-changing results that can be attributed to the desire of indi viduals to attain a superior quality of life.

I would like to encourage you to take this opportunity to invest in yourself and your well-being. Each program I design is customized based upon your personal needs and constructed for optimum outcomes. In the process, you will be inspired and empowered to break free of any limitations that have confined you. For a free consultation, make an appointment and begin creating your optimal future!

“My experience working with Trey has been incredibly positive and the results I am achieving are remarkable. I like to say that it is a lot more than barbells and jumping jacks, and I highly recommend.”

Don Moore, TGO Resident

“I wanted to improve my strength and become proactive with my health. Trey has delivered exceptional results and has exceeded my expectations.”

Linda Utz, TGO Resident
