Retired Flag Box Ceremony
What better time than Memorial Day weekend to have a ceremony to introduce the new TGO Retired Flag Box. This project was the brainchild of TGO resident Barbara Yeager, who relied on a few other residents and some Sawdust Club members to help her make the project come together. The ceremony included our local Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, the singing of the National Anthem, a bugler who played taps, and a Memorial Day speech by Brevard Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Numerous residents brought their worn flags to place in the box for proper disposal. The box now stands on the south side of the CSA Building. Continued on page 20

Manager’s Corner June 10, 2022 Dear TGO Community, We are now 10 days into Hurricane Season, which began June 1st and ends November 30th. Tropical storm Alex blew past Florida last weekend and served as a reminder that we Floridians should prepare our homes and property for this season of heavy winds and rain. If you are away from TGO, I hope by now you have stored or secured all items on your property that can blow away. This week we saw some violent afternoon thunderstorms with heavy winds, arriving with little predictability. These summer weather patterns will sometimes disrupt the day-to-day operations in our community. After dealing with drought conditions in April and May, I expect these rainstorms will quickly cause areas of wet turf and make mowing a challenge, especially in the lower areas of our grounds. The CSA office is now monitoring the tropics daily, and if a big storm takes shape and becomes a threat to TGO, I will share our community hurricane preparations with you and ask all owners to activate your own hurricane plan to protect your property and yourselves. It’s time to vote! Please help select our own Blue Heron Restaurant and TGO Golf Club as “Best of the Best” in Brevard County. We are honored to be nominated by Florida Today for this local recognition. Our community has worked very hard in recent years to support and improve our Blue Heron Restaurant and TGO Golf Course as businesses we are proud of, so winning this recognition would be a special way to validate this hard work. Check out Page 10 of this issue of The Happenings, scan the QR code and follow directions to vote and help us win. I will vote as often as the website allows! Ken Schmidt is our 22-year veteran ARC inspector, and he recently announced he is stepping out of the Inspector role and leaping into fulltime retirement. Ken was kind enough to give CSA plenty of notice so we could recruit the right person to replace him, and we are fortunate to find Greg Amlong, who began training for the Inspector role this week. Ken will remain on the job to help train Greg until he is comfortable with his new role. Ken Schmidt deserves a ton of recognition and a HUGE community-wide thank you for over two decades of developing our ARC guidelines and maintaining the integrity of our community as it has changed. Ken’s shoes will be difficult for Greg to fill, but Greg comes to us with lots of relevant work experience, a great attitude and some wisdom too, so I look forward to Greg’s fresh new contributions to the ARC committee. Many improvement projects are in full gear now. One of the larger projects we budgeted this year was the replacement of approximately a half-mile of field fencing along our nature trial, south of the nature trail bridge and behind the library, which separates our CSA-owned conservation land from St. Johns property. The old fence was rusted and broken in many areas, and it was allowing non-native wild hogs into our property to cause problems for us. The fence replacement project started this week. A team of ranchers who work with the St. Johns Water Management District were selected to install the new fence for us. The ranchers will remove the old fence first, then you will see the posts and new fencing take shape. This project should be completed by the end of June if not sooner. There may be some nature trail closures during this project, so please adhere to any barricades or signs that are posted along the trail, and for your safety, please keep your distance when you see work is underway, as they will be using heavy equipment to perform this work. Sincerely
Billy Specht CSA Manager

Instruction by TGO PGA Professional Chuck Kandt Clinic Information is posted on the information board at the Golf Shop Private Golf Lessons are Available by Appointment We’ve all heard the one liner, “When I hit 60, things started falling apart.” Or after hearing of a person’s ripe age we quip, “I just hope I am alive at that age!” Well, TGO has three devoted golfers who must have had an in with Ponce De Leon because they are drinking a different type of water than us regular folk. Roger Johnson, Joe Arthurs and Buzz Bromley have been golfing these fairways for a long time. Rather than go age by age, let’s just say they are much more mature than most of us. The threesome has affectionately been dubbed Team 270. Collectively their ages add up to 270. You do the math. Not only are they more experienced than those are around them, their golf games are better than average. You will be hard pressed to find a day where at least one or more did not shoot their age. Recently Buzz shot a superb round of 75 only to be challenged throughout by Joe’s 79. TGO is blessed to have such a distinguished group of gentlemen playing at our course. Say hi next time you see them. They try to play every other day. The 19th hole stories they could tell would be a wonderful read. Photo courtesy of Wayne Condra

The Projects Continue... Our long list of projects are being completed at a solid pace. The addition to the CSA offices is moving along nicely, as is the game room. Guard rails on the main drive at the Addison Canal are now complete. The concrete has been removed and replaced in the parking lot across from the church to help accommodate drainage. The Manor pool will now start renovation in mid-June and hopefully reopen by mid July. All-in-all, our off-season list of projects is getting smaller each day.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)
Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073. Both are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Community Information & Notices CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Service Animal Rules
According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs.

TGO Retired Flag Box Presentation On May 27, a group of TGO residents came together for the presentation of our new “Retired Flags” box. A lot of our neighbors display the American flag here in TGO, and now, when those flags become tattered and torn and ready to be replaced, there is an official box where you can place your old flags - which will then be properly disposed of. The idea for the retired flag box came from Barbara Yeager who saw one at another RV park and thought it would be a great idea for TGO. Barbara first passed the idea to CSA Manager, Billy Specht who also thought it was a good idea. The next step was to get it built, so Barbara presented the idea to Doc Fraser of our sawdust club. She showed him a picture, and the next day he came back with a design idea, measurements, and a plan. This Retired Flag box was now an official project for the Sawdust Club team to complete, and as you can see, they did a fantastic job. Next up was the presentation itself and Barbara pulled out all stops. For those who were not there, Barbara intro-

duced the project providing the background for the idea. Our TGO Golf Pro, Chuck Kandt, led with an invocation, there was a presentation of colors by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, and TGO resident Gary Johanson sang the National Anthem. The box was unveiled by Roger and Gail Stairs, and there was a bugler on hand to close out the ceremony by playing taps. Brevard County Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, spoke about the importance of Memorial Day and the role our flag plays as a symbol of freedom. He also stayed around to talk with our TGO residents, exchanging stories about his recent trip to our southern border. When the presentation was complete, residents came up to the box and dropped in their worn flags. The box was almost filled to the top. The flag box is now permanently housed on the south side of the CSA building. Stop by to take a look - like our flag, it is beautiful!
Barbara Yeager assembled a great team including Roger and Gail Stairs, Doc Fraser , Laura Sievers and Tim Emerson.
TGO Retired Flag Box Presentation Barbara would like to recognize and thank the following Tim Emerson - Carved the stars on the top of the box. TGO residents who helped this project come together: Charlie Wing & Laura Sievers - Were general consultants and helped with the planning and tool recommendations. Doc Fraser - Designed and built the box, stand, and sign. Gail Stairs - She had the title of project manager. She fol- Joy Campbell - Was the think tank person. She helped with lowed up with everyone. She searched for specific “Ameri- recommendations for the singer and had many ideas about can Flag Colors.” Gail also painted the box, including all of the honor guard and the bugler. Ed Cote - Will transport the flags for proper disposal. the stripes. Roger Stairs - Assisted his wife Gail and helped to move the box - and pretty much whatever else Gail asked him to do. Tracy & Wayne Hoffman - Donated the lumber.
Barbara also helped with the design and cut and placed the vinyl stars and words. Her husband, Mike Orszulak, was her sounding board and contributed valuable suggestions.
Roger and Gail Stairs handled the the unveiling of the flag box as well as being instrumental in the production process.
Our local Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard were here for the presentation of colors.
Brevard County Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, took part in the presentation providing insight to the importance of Memorial Day.
Sharon and Jack Fitch brought their old flag to place in the box for disposal. The box was nearly full from all the contributers.

Our American Flag
- Some Interesting Facts
The American Flag is not just a piece of fabric. It is symbolic of the fabric of our society as a nation. It has been carried far and wide as a symbol of American pride, all the while serving as an emblem of the freedom we hold dear. Here are 10 interesting facts about the American Flag There have been 27 versions. From the 1777 original that had 13 stars and 13 stripes for the American colonies, there have been many changes and iterations of the flag. Each time a state was added to the union, a star was added to the flag. We, of course, now stand with 50 stars and 13 stripes. The flag can be displayed for all 24 hours. While it is Federal law that the flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset (unless there’s inclement weather), there are measures that can be taken to display the flag for all 24 hours. All that needs to be added is proper illumination of the flag so it can be seen in the dark. The colors were chosen carefully. The Red, White, and Blue did not just happen by accident. The founding fathers wanted the colors to have meaning, not just look visually pleasing. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. The current design wasn’t professionally made. 17-year-old high school student, Robert G. Heft, of Lancaster, Ohio submitted his design in a contest in 1958. It was chosen out of over 1,500 submissions by President Dwight Eisenhower. The current flag is the only one to have lasted more than 50 years. As stated above, there have been many changes to the design of the American Flag. But the one we currently observe is the longest running iteration of the symbol, likely because no states have been added to the union since 1959. A snippet of the flag that the Star-Spangled Banner was written about, was sold in 2011. The flag that flew at Ft. McHenry, immortalized by Francis Scott Key, is still around. A 2” x 5” swatch of it was sold at an auction in 2011 for a whopping $38,000. The rest of the flag is on display at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The original flag is 30’ by 34’ and is displayed in an environmentally controlled chamber.
22
Our local Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard helped open and close the ceremony.
The Flag has a national day of recognition. Flag Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777, was established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916, after years of local celebrations. Flags should be disposed of in a “dignified manner.” If an American Flag is damaged beyond repair and you need to dispose of it, you can burn it with dignity or place it in a retired flag box - like the one we dedicated here in TGO. The flag can touch the ground and still be used. There is a myth that once a flag touches the ground it needs to be burned or disposed of. That’s not entirely true. If a flag is soiled or touches the ground, it can be washed and dry cleaned and continue to be used. Five American Flags have made it to the moon. You have probably seen Neil Armstrong on the moon with an American Flag, but he is not the only one to plant one on the surface of the moon. Five additional Apollo missions, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17, ended with an astronaut placing a flag on the moon. Showing Respect For Our Flag • Folding in the traditional triangle for stowage and never wadded up. • Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty. • The flag is folded in a triangle because in the U.S. Armed Forces, at the ceremony of retreat, the flag is lowered, folded in a triangle, and kept under watch throughout the night as a tribute to our nation’s honored dead. The next morning it is brought out and, at a ceremony of reveille, flown high as a symbol of belief in the resurrection of the body.

CSA PATROL STOP SIGNS - Let’s make sure we obey them A stop sign is one of our most valuable and effective traffic control devices when used at the right place. Here at TGO we have numerous stop signs in locations where they are vitally important to obey. Some intersections can be very dangerous not only for vehicle accidents but much worse if a golf cart, bicycle, or a pedestrian is hit by a car. Please remember that like our speed limit signs, stop signs are not a suggestion... they are a rule that everyone must follow - even the golf carts and bicycles. You can receive a traffic violation to the tune of $50 or more for this violation, so please take an extra couple of seconds, come to a complete stop behind the sign, and look both ways before proceeding. This will help keep everyone, including yourself, safe. 28

Help Us Name This Handsome Critter...
We have a new addition to the Nature Center Porch. We would love to have everyone come and see him. The only thing is we need a name for him. I am inviting the community to come see him. Think of a great name and we will see who comes up with the best one (one name per person). If the name chosen has multiple entries, then a drawing will be held. The winner will get a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (to be delivered only in TGO). The name will be chosen in the Fall to give everyone a chance to choose a name. Send your entry to Sandy Juba at sjubatgo@gmail.com or drop in the box in the Nature Center porch. He used to sit next to the Addison Canal. I wish to thank Michele Lagalo, who completely refurbished him and made him the most handsome critter in the park. 36

Wildfire Season Has Begun
by Ed Brown
On the afternoon of May 22 a column of black smoke spiraled skyward from a trailer park in Cocoa. The EVENING NEWS, CH 7, claimed that a resident of the trailer park, attempting to reduce the fire load behind the the park, had set a “controlled” burn” which had “gotten out of hand.” The burn was obviously not very “controlled.” It set fire to 28 acres of wild land and mobile home sites, destroying five homes and their contents completely and heavily damaging five others and requiring evacuation of fifty additional houses. Brevard County Fire Rescue brought the blaze under control. What serious lessons can we all learn from this: First of all, there is no such thing as a “controlled burn” in modern Fire Science! The correct term is now: “PRESCRIBED BURN.” A strict list of pre-burn conditions must be met before the first match is struck by the agency in charge. This enlightened procedure reduces the possibility of burning down the neighborhood and fixes responsibility and liability for such an unpleasant result. The list of conditions that make up the “prescription” for the burn include: boundaries of the intended area, weather conditions anticipated, wind direction and velocity, dryness of the fire load, dryness of the soil, nearness and direction to exposures that could burn, and resources for extinguishment. These include: fire trucks, helicopters with water buckets, aircraft with fire retardants, bombardiers (all-terrain vehicles with pump, hoses and water), firefighters on foot with backpack water, pump, nozzle, fire brooms and shovels and “Backfire Pots” to destroy the fuel load ahead of the fire. Second, do not attempt your own burn to kill weeds, control insects or endear yourself to your community! We, in TGO, have had a long period of dry weather. The water flow in the Addison Canal has dwindled to a series of pools with little current and few wading birds. Without our sprinkler system our lawns would be parched and brown. Our many lakes and ponds are low as well. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms have been localized and generally rain deficient. Do not despair, my fellow residents. Hurricane Season is just around the corner! In case of an emergency - like a wildfire, It’s always good to become familiar with our TGO Evacuation Traffic Plan. Take a few minutes to study the map to the right and make sure you know the correct way to depart the park. Remember, during an emergency evacuation do NOT use your RV as an evacuation vehicle.

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker Ed is a photographer extraordinaire, a student of nature, and dedicated to helping fellow photographers. All of these wonderful descriptions of Ed are only to be said if you have his wife Nettie’s name in the same sentence - they are a beautiful team. Fifty years ago Ed and Nettie met over a dead body while learning the anatomy of the human body in a medical school laboratory.
I met Ed 15 years ago, not over a dead body but over a dead computer while attempting to project photo images on the wall for TGO Photo Club members to review. Before I talk of their photography let me say some things about their community activities. Their home is like no other. All around the edge of the center of their home are nooks that show you they are a couple who loves family, photography, reading, and studying. Of course there is a bed for their dog, but the center of their home is an open dance hall. Did I say a dance hall? Yep, that is what I said. For years, Ed and Nettie held, in their home, Scottish Country dancing, an activity that brings to TGO a unique form of fun for all who wanted to participate. Due to health reasons they have moved most of the dances to the Pavilion. In years past they organized local bike trips on the They had a rich community life with their own medical emerging Titusville to Orlando trail system. That is anpractices before retirement. Nettie was Director of Medical other team activity they devised to make our lives in TGO Services for the Space Center under the Pan Am company more fun. Health issues required them to modify biking before setting up her own General Medical practice near Ed’s this year. Maybe because they are doctors, their modified Orthopedic office in Titusville. biking has set healthy examples for us all in TGO. They each purchased three-wheel bikes, and every day you will see one or both of them walking their dog while they are on their trikes. The dog rules the speed - often stopping to sniff - but they patiently wait before riding on - a no pressure happy way to enjoy the great outdoors. I call their example, “My doctor’s orders.”
Meet Ed Swan
46
For the last 15 years Ed has been a leader in the Photo Club. At each meeting, members bring images on a thumbdrive that they want to show and get comments from other members on how they may have improved the shot. Ed brings his lap-top and projects those images on the TV in the Nature Center. His personality is perfect for the job, never rushing, never judging - just helping members interact and share ideas.
Photography as a study aid to learning more of the natural life around you. It just might be “What the Doctor ordered!” As a service to fellow photographers, Ed opened his home for members to bring their computers to his dining room table and together they learned how post-processing can help created better photos. But, the interesting part of Ed’s photography is how he uses photography to integrate his love of nature and his student-like mind.
Here is how one conversation I had with Ed went. I asked Ed:.“What do you do with all the photos?” “I print them, fill our walls, and then I study them. Look at this photo of this pair of woodpeckers building that nest. You think the male and female are the same color, but to the male bird, his mate is a beautiful color - we human trichromats can see about one million colors, but that bird is a tetrachromat and it sees
an incredible 100 million colors. She doesn’t look anything like a male to him - she is a lady dressed in beautiful colors that we humans cannot see. Now, in this other photo over here, I studied this foliage (below) around our home in the mountains for over five years - each year, on the surface, it looks the same but study the details. It is different - I ask myself, Why?” That conversation told me Ed is truly a student and uses photography to help him better understand and appreciate nature. That is what I think makes Ed’s photography so interesting and I hope it prompts you to think about your photography as a study aid to learn more of the natural life around you. It just might be “What the Doctor ordered!” Help Jim Brubaker shape SNAP-SHOT. Send your tips, ideas, and stories to jimbrubaker@earthlink.net

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
