Meet Sharon Maloney

If you follow the TGO facebook sites, then you have already seen some of Sharon Maloney’s photos. Sharon spends a lot of time walking and hiking through our park and nature trails... and a lot of time volunteering for several outdoor causes, all-the-while with her trusty Minolta Pentax in hand. Jim Brubaker got together with Sharon to talk about her passion for photography and the important role her photos play in sharing her stories with her mom. Photography has integrated into all of her activities - from Firewise, to trail maintenance, to purple martins, to owl watching, and her family. Continued on page 48

Dear TGO Community, The dust is beginning to settle on several of our largest summer improvement projects. The past two weeks have been super busy, and at times a little crazy. Writing this article gives me a chance to reflect on these past weeks, and recognize the extra effort it takes to move big projects forward during a tough business climate. Below are our four most recent “Wins” this summer along with a mention of the CSA team members who made them happen: 1) The Manor Pool and Spa improvement project is now complete! I saw dozens of swimmers and sunbathers enjoying our pool again this past weekend. The pool and spa have a new surface and fresh new perimeter tiles. The pool deck cracks are repaired, and the deck received a new finish. The furniture and pool equipment were pressure washed. When you see Cory and his recreation team, Jay and Alex, give them a high-five on a job well-done! Beautifications Lead Mark Gray cleaned up the landscaping around the pool area and planted two large Christmas Palms at the pool entrance. 2) The CSA has a shiny new irrigation pump system to provide water to your yards. The pumps will now provide a reliable source of water to your sprinklers. Our irrigation team can now monitor and control the flow of irrigation water electronically, giving them confidence when repairing breaks or wiring issues with the irrigation system downstream. We removed the roof of our pumphouse, and a large crane was used to lift out the old pumps and install the new system. When you see Jonathan, Josh and/or Jan, please congratulate them on getting these pumps into service. 3) The Blue Heron Restaurant has a bright new walk-in cooler, and a super clean facility, and we are ready to serve you again. Jordan and his facilities team led the demolition and electrical wiring of the new cooler. During a five day restaurant closure last week, Karan, Chef Ace and many members of the Blue Heron staff deep-cleaned and organized the dining rooms, service areas and kitchen. They even repainted the floorboards! The entire facility has a clean, fresh atmosphere today. We are open again for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week! 4) The CSA office renovation project reached the half-way mark last week. Our new CSA office layout is now framed and ready for finishing work. Guy Sampson and the Buildings Team, Jeremy and John, have skillfully moved this project forward. Barbara Yeager has custom-labeled the doors and assembled chairs. Tom Wheir and I assisted with the demolition. The entire CSA office staff participated in planning this new space, and we are now excited to see it coming together. We will host an Open House this fall to say “Thank You” to TGO for supporting this expansion as our business has grown. Chairman Tom Wheir and CSA Board of Directors deserve a big Thank You for their support of these reserve projects. We are modernizing our 30-year-old facilities and infrastructure, and these improvements will keep TGO great for many more years to come. Several of the CSA board members took a tour of the completed projects last Friday (see pictures). Sincerely,

Billy Specht CSA Manager

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Community Information & Notices CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Golf Carts in TGO - Please Slow Down - Make Those Stops

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

You see a boat filled with people, yet there isn’t a single person on board. How is that possible? Answer is somewhere in this issue.

Pictures of Progress

It’s done... and it looks beautiful. TGO residents are now enjoying the newly resurfaced pool, spa and deck.

The new CSA offices are progressing nicely. Bernie Hatch and Matt Willey were greeted by Donna Edinger, Billy Specht and Tom Wheir for a tour of the office and the new game room construction.

18

Pictures of Progress The new irrigation pump has has been replaced and the system updated. The CSA utilities team did an amazing job in replacing the old unit. They had to remove the roof from the irrigation pump house, remove the old pump with a crane, then drop in the new pump. They cut a trench to connect to the existing system. The old pump had served us well over the past few decades and was definitely ready to be replaced. The new pump has high tech controls that can be operated with a cell phone. Johnathon Lyerly showed Billy, Bernie and Matt how the pump and control panel operate.

Heat Related Illness by Ed Brown

Have you noticed, it is Summer? At least in the Northern Hemisphere It is. Decades of weather statistics show that temperatures are higher than in our record-keeping past. This is true for the Northern Hemisphere. What about Winter below the equator? It is Winter now in Peru, Chile, Antarctica? I didn’t mean to make you think outside the box, so let’s stick to the U.S. Did you know that “Heat Related Deaths” are one of the deadliest weather-related health outcomes in the United States? Read on to learn more. What is heat related Illness? Also called HYPERTHERMIA, it is a condition resulting from exposure to extreme heat where the body becomes unable to properly cool, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature. The evaporation of sweat is the normal way for the body to cool down, except in high humidity. Then the evaporative cooling by sweating is inhibited and your body overheats. Now what? You’re in trouble! 1. Get out of the sun and into air conditioning. 2. Replace fluids to increase sweating. 3. Knock off work. You may be done working for today. These steps are crucial to reducing illness and preventing death! Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke are serious complications. Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: Golfers Beware 1. Muscle cramps 2. Fatigue It’s not uncommom for both 3. Headache Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke 4. Nausea or vomiting Symptoms to occur while out 5. Dizziness or fainting golfing during these hot Heat Stroke Symptoms: summer months. 1. Body temperature greater than 103 degrees F 2. Red, hot, dry skin (no sweating) 3. Rapid, strong pulse 4. Throbbing headache 5. Dizziness 6. Nausea 7. Confusion 8. Unconsciousness Very high body temperatures can damage the brain and result in organ failures and death! Transport the patient to a hospital Emergency Room via EMS. Heat Related Injuries are no joke! If you suspect Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke, get the patient to a medical facility (ER) as soon as possible (ASAP)!

The Ibis - White & Glossy

- By Betty Salter

The White Ibis

The Glossy Ibis

Omnivore: Crab, crayfish, insects, frogs, worms, snakes, and small fishes Litter Size: 2-7 eggs Weight: 1.685-2.285 lb Length: 21-28 in Main Threats: Habitat loss Conservation Status: Least concern

Omnivore: Fish, snake, insects, insect larvae, lizards, dragonflies, crustaceans, snails, leeches Litter Size: 3-4 eggs Weight: 1.1-2.1 lb Length: 19-26 in Main Threats: Humans, birds of prey, alligators Conservation Status: Least concern

Have you noticed white birds with pink beaks and legs probing in the grass of your lawn? Those are White Ibis and they use that long decurved beak to probe for food. The tip of the beak is very sensitive allowing them to search for food by touch. These highly sociable birds nest in colonies with the pair sharing the chores of building the nest and tending the young. The mating display includes ritualized preening, bending forward and gripping twigs with the beak, pointing the beak skyward, and dropping the head onto the back. The male tends to do the gathering of nesting materials while the female constructs the nest. Baby White Ibis have a straight beak until they are 14 days old, then their beak begins to curve downward. How do you know if it is a beak or a bill? It’s a bill if you have to pay it. A wedge or congregation of Ibis will often have individuals in it that have brown on them, those would be the juveniles, the more brown, the younger the bird. This is our patriotic bird in breeding season as you see it walking along you see red beak and legs, white feathers and blue eyes. White Ibis are native to the Americas with their range expanding from the Atlantic coastal areas westward. They fly in an aerodynamic “V” formation with their necks stretched similar to spoonbills and cranes. White Ibis are not edible for humans. When cooked the meat turns green and tastes weird. It may cause health issues due to pathogens from its feces that can build up in the meat.

36

Though similar to the White Ibis in size and shape this Ibis is very different. Basically black in appearance, when the sun hits the feathers just right iridescence is seen caused by the prismatic affect of barbules on the feathers. When I first started birding I could not understand why the black ibis was named glossy ibis, then one day it happened, the light was just right… all I could say was “WOW!” That iridescence can be seen on other birds as well, the ruby-throated hummingbird for instance. Glossy Ibis have only been in the Americas for a few centuries. In fact, they were rare in Florida as recently as 1930. It is believed that they rode the trade winds from Africa to the Caribbean similar to the invasion of the Cattle Egret. Now they can be found on every continent except Antarctica. This ibis can be found in fresh water habitats, shallow ponds, and marshes like St. Johns River Canaveral Marshes near us as well as the salt water marshes of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Like the White Ibis they nest in colonies which may include other species of wading birds. They too share the nesting responsibilities. The young wander about near the nest at 2-3 weeks, begin testing their wings about 4-5 weeks and fly well enough to go to feeding grounds with the parents at 6-7 weeks. Glossy Ibis often fly in a “V” formation with necks extended. Why is one side of the “V” longer than the other? There are more birds on that side.

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker Sharon and I got together so that I could get some of her thoughts about photography for this article. I was going to ask if she read my articles. Then I was going to tell her that I write the articles for three reasons: 1. Help TGO’ers know a little about their neighbors that they see out-and-about with camera in hand. 2. To encourage all TGO’ers to consider joining the sport of photography, and 3. To give folks like Sharon the opportunity to brag about their own photography.

Meet Sharon Maloney

I have seen Sharon’s photos on Facebook so I knew she was often out-and-about with camera in hand and I knew that her photos were something to brag about. I also knew from the captions she put on her photos that she brings a sense of humor and unquietness to the sport of photography. Her photos tell a story and her captions make sure we get the story - generally a funny or cute story. I was really looking forward to starting a conversation with her. I wanted a little of her joy and excitement about photography to rub off on all of us. But, Sharon’s humility caught me off guard. She started the conversation before I had a chance to say much more than “Hello, my name is Jim Brubaker.” She said, “I’m not anything like the other photographers you interviewed. I am new at it. My photos are not that good.” My response was, “I think you’re wrong.” (Then I thought, telling her that she was wrong was a terrible thing to say - especially when I hardly knew her). So, I said, “That was not nice of me to say... that you are wrong. I should have said you are right. Your photos are terrible. Yipes.” We laughed and after that funny introduction, Sharon and I had a great hour talking about photography. Sharon has so much to say about the hobby/sport of photography - and hopefully it will inspire some of you to pick up a camera and enrich your days. It has changed her life and she loves it. Sharon is the daughter of Jim and Barbara Burngener. Jim and Barbara moved to TGO in 2004. Gloria and I met them that year and they even visited us at our ranch in Texas and parked their motor home in our

front pasture for the night. We enjoyed both of them so much. Jim passed away in September and Sharon moved in to be with her Mom. In that short time since September, Sharon, loving anything to do with the outdoors, found TGO to be a wonderful, friendly place to live. She has joined many activities and she takes her camera to all of them. The stories embedded in her photos are her way of telling her Mom and family all over the United States about her day. It is her way of participating in conversation over the family dinner table while being states apart.

Sharon’s photo include a wide variety of animals and scenery.

Sharon says that her less than $500 Minolta Pentax camera with a 67 power lens has given her as much joy as a $5,000 outfit could ever do. Doug Jensen gave her the nicest compliment one day while they were photographing the owl nest on Addison: “You got those photos with that camera? - Wow - you and that camera are great.” She said so much has happened for her under that owl nest on Addison. She went there at least three time a day to photograph the growth of the owlets. While there, many TGO photographers inspired her, helped her migrate from the cell phone camera to the Minolta, and helped her get to be on a first name basis with the baby owl.

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
