Do You Like to Hike?
Hello dear friends! I am Julia, the publisher of “In Zurich”. After coming to Switzerland I’ve noticed that many expats are missing quality social life. Aiming to change this, I’ve created a Facebook group “Good Friends in Zurich”. It expanded rapidly, and soon Meetup group “Good Meetups is Zurich” was born. Thus, from a hobby activist I’ve turned into a fulltime expat events planner. My goal is to bring people together via unforgettable, exclusive experiences. To complete my concept I started this magazine. It will inform you about what is going on in Zurich and in our communities. We have a lot of partners, and many of them you will get to know through this magazine. If you want to co-host an event, contact our team of enthusiasts and propose your idea. Everybody is welcome to join us. Visit one of our upcoming events and find your new good friends!

Free Places to Museums
Landesmuseum (National Museum) The entry ticket costs CHF 10.00, yet the Simply Zurich permanent exhibition is FREE. In the third room of the exhibit, you can witness Zurich and its surroundings as never before. Four short movies will let you experience unconventional and behind-thescenes angles of this extraordinary city. The astounding permanent collection gives a thorough glimpse into Switzerland’s origin as a country, with its remarkable, sometimes surprising past and innovative present. Samantha ’s Tip: The National Museum has one of the best gift shops for quality Swiss souvenirs. Curiosity: Google Maps demonstrate us how the shape of the original building resembles a capital G of the 19th century font. The architect Gustav Gull left his initial in Zurich’s landscape for eternity.

Visit in Zurich An Insider’s Guide to the City
Kunsthaus (Art Museum) On Wednesdays, the Kunsthaus opens its doors to the permanent collection for FREE. Children under 17 years can always see the temporary collections at no cost. For art lovers and enthusiasts alike, this museum is a treasure trove. It has a remarkable and substantial collection ranging from old masters to modern impressionists. Curiosity: The Kunsthouse, founded in the late 18th century, was started by a group of artists and art lovers as a collection of donated works. They called it a painting book.

City of Zurich
Museums of the University of Zurich UZH museums entertain people of all ages with an impressive array of cultural artifacts and knowledge. Among them are: • Ethnographic Museum (situated in Old Botanical Garden) • focusTerra – Museum of Earth Sciences (its definite highlight is the earthquake simulator) • Zoological Museum (taxidermised animals aplenty) • Archeological Collection (mummies anyone?) • Paleontological Museum (fossilised 230-millionyears-old marine reptiles) • Anthropological Institute and Museum (bones & sculls galore) Some of these museums are conveniently located on the University and ETH premises and in the city center.

Money Museum This museum is a real hidden gem! The entrance is FREE, as is the tour around the premises. Call in advance to book a tour and inquire if there are any in English, as they usually are in German. Bibliophiles will undoubtedly let out a high-pitched scream when the lovely curator tells them that they can touch all ancient books. Moreover, the temporary exhibitions with state-of-the-art digital galleries explore interesting philosophical and existential themes. Samantha’s Tip: Combine your visit to this museum with an excursion to the Rigiblick vantage point (the cost of the cable car is included in your public transportation ticket).
Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich This museum displays a monumental gathering of 160 000 prints and drawings. Its collection is one of the biggest in Switzerland. A true cornucopia for the graphic design and art lovers alike! Visitors will travel as far back as the 15th century while visiting one of the yearly exhibits. For dates and opening times, check out museum’s website.
Art Gallery Helmhaus This exhibition space is located just below the Grossmünster in the heart of Zurich’s old town. The Helmhaus showcases Swiss contemporary art that ebbs and flows through all kinds of artistic media. Samantha’s Tip: Even if you have absolutely no inclination for contemporary art, why not sneak in anyway and take some fantastic pictures over the Limmat river and the spectacular old townscape.

Churches Grossmünster
St. Peter Church
The cradle of the religious reformation in the 16th century holds surprising contemporary stained glass windows from Sigmar Polke and the colourful choral windows of Augusto Giacometti.
The oldest parish church of Zurich is a peaceful and harmonious place of worship. The clock on the tower gives time since the late 13th century. It is the largest one in Europe, with a remarkable diameter of 8.7 m (28.50 ft). Looking at the tower, just above the clock, you will notice four small windows on each side: the city’s fire warden lodged here from 1340 up till 1911.
Both entries to the church and to the Romanesque crypt are FREE. Despite this place’s modest demeanor and sober mood, a serene atmosphere envelops the visiting guests. Samantha’s Tip: Crypt! As you walk towards the church’s front, you will notice a set of stairs leading down. Follow them, and you’ll find yourself in the company of a grotesque 600-year-old statue of Charles the Great. Try to catch a concert here, as the acoustics are heavenly.
Samantha’s Tip: Take a moment to rest on the circular bench around the linden tree in front of the stairs leading to the church. According to the legend, this tree transmits tranquility and peace to those who take a minute and enjoy the square beneath its canopy.
Wasserkirche Fraumünster Several scenes of Zurich’s legends and myths adorn the adjacent 100-year-old cloister, which is FREE to visit. The bronze block in the middle is a monument dedicated to the last Abbess of the Fraumünster, who decided to spare the city a civil war and an unnecessary blood bath. At the onset of the religious reformation, she surrendered and handed the abbey to the town. Samantha’s Tip: Marc Chagall’s five stained glass windows will take your breath away and leave you awestruck. At night you can admire the window’s magnificence from outside too. Curiosity: In case of emergency the windows will be evacuated by a special force commando team.
8
inZurich
It is worth catching the limited opening hours to admire the fabulous Giacometti stained glass windows and discover the execution place of Zurich’s former patron saints Regula & Felix. Samantha’s Tip: On most Fridays you can attend a FREE concert from 12.30 noon till 1 pm (tips are appreciated).

Bonus
Opera House Garage Surprisingly, this is another historical site – and a UNESCO World Heritage Site at that! You have to explore the off-the-beaten-path alleys and open doors to discover unimaginable surprises. Here you will find an archeological window on 5 000 years of history that displays the remains of the stilt houses (pile dwellings) and various artifacts from the Stone Age era. It’s a perfect place to take a bit of a respite from the summer’s heat. More tips from Samantha: Whenever you fancy a break in your meanderings of the city, enjoy FREE chairs, shade and a fountain on the Opera Square.

Busted! Myth
1
Myth Only Permanent Residents (C permit holders) and Swiss Citizens are entitled to carry out self-employment and/or start a business in Switzerland.
Truth: You can carry out self-employment and start a business in Switzerland as long as your residence permit allows you to take up gainful activity. 1. If you are a B permit holder, most likely you’re allowed to start a business. Look at the right side of your residence permit – it will be stated there whether you can work. If the answer is yes, then you can be self-employed without any additional permits. 2. Even when you are not allowed to work in Switzerland (which is the case for family members of L and CDL Permit Holders), you can file an application with your cantonal authorities showing: A business plan. That your new company or you, as a self-employed individual, will make a considerable contribution to the Swiss economy. If your application is approved, you will be granted a work permit.
22 inZurich
2
You need to be registered as self-employed/business owner to be able to start your own business.
Truth: Registration is only required once you reach either of these thresholds: You earn at least CHF 2,300 a year. At this point, you are required to register for the AHV/AVS which is the old age pension insurance system to have your self-employed status recognized. Before that, registration is voluntary. As a sole proprietor, you are required to register in the Commercial Registry in the canton where your business is located, once your earning reaches CHF 100,000. Before that, registration is only voluntary. Of course, if you wish to set-up a more complicated business entity such as a SARL/GmbH or SA/AG, registration is mandatory from the start.

5 Myths on Being Self-Employed in Switzerland Myth
Myth
3
You need a lot of money to start your business in Switzerland.
Truth: It is often heard that you need to have at least CHF 20,000 to set up a business in Switzerland. This is only true if you wish to form a SARL/GmbH. When you intend to start a stock corporation such as a SA/AG, the initial authorized share should be CHF 100,000, 50% of which must be paid up.
4
You need to speak the language to be successful in your business.
Truth: Most Swiss know English. And even if there are some language difficulties, people will still pay for the product or service they like. Swiss are quite supportive of local businesses. Try to communicate with them – don’t let the language be a barrier to your dreams!
Otherwise, you can always start as a sole proprietor (Raison individuelle/ Einzelfirma), and no start-up capital will be required.

When we talk about decoration, it can be a good idea to accent the polished brass, candle stand or acrylic and raise the office look to shine. Don’t skimp on and bring in an ornament you like.
Over the last months we have experienced the transition, which has seen many of us changing the way we work. Most of employees landed in home offices and, therefore, had to adapt themselves to these new conditions. For many people, who are now working from home, the combination of a job routine mixed with family life hasn’t been easy to deal with. Improvised calls in the bathroom or late dinners due to an increased workload
have become a common occurrence currence during the pandemic. This leads us to question whether we have really created a workspace that is suitable for these changed circumstances. To design a place which not only makes us feel comfortable, but also allows us to be productive, we must consider some important factors. How to
Stay Healthy As an Expat
You did it, you made the big move overseas, landed a great job or followed your partner to pursue an exciting new life far from your home country. Congratulations! Still every new adventure comes with some naturally built-in stress factors, which may deviate you from normal routine. How to stay healthy and keep your balance?
Life of an expat brings its unique challenges. Among them are:
1
Different seasonal products Reduced sense of community Unfamiliar items at the store etc. Either way this can lead to emotional eating, negative thoughts or unhealthy habits. Here are top 10 ways to stay fit and energized regardless of what country you find yourself in.
Eat the Rainbow Whenever you can, choose high-quality real food of the seasonal and local variety – the product that hasn’t travelled far is higher in nutrients and tastes better than the one imported from abroad. Crowd out sugary and processed food. Let quality fruits and vegetables play the main role in your daily nutrition plan, with protein and fat being the supporting actors.
2 Create a Morning Routine To set the tone for each day, take some time in the morning to breathe, meditate, do yoga, dance, read and/or make breakfast. There is no requirement – simply block out some time to engage in activities that feel great. Pick few things you like to do and experiment.
28 inZurich
Lifestyle
3 Make Sleep & Rest a Priority When you’re sleep-deprived and stressed, your body will crave sweet snacks and caffeine for quick artificial energy. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. It is imperative for your immune system to function well. Have a good bedtime routine, drink calming tea, diffuse relaxing essential oils and cut back on-screen time long before bedtime hours.
4 Make Every Meal a Ritual
Move Your Body
5
Sit down, light some candles, breathe and put your fork down between bites. Making each food experience look and feel beautiful will greatly help your digestion. You’ll be more satisfied if you take the time to appreciate your food mindfully.
Find an exercise routine you enjoy and engage in it daily. You are living in one of the most walkable and gorgeous countries on the planet. Remember – there is no such thing as poor weather, so buckle up and get outside. Try to do some sort of movement 3-5 times a week. Exercising benefits your mood, your waistline, your sleep, your sex life and your overall health. Just do it!
Ditch Toxins
6
Take a look at the myriad of skin care and cleaning products you are using and consider purchasing those that are safe and organic. Even small quantities of toxic chemicals can have a negative impact on your health.
Hydrate Our body is 75% water! Make sure you are taking advantage of all the fresh, clean water that flows freely from fountains all over Switzerland. Carry a refillable bottle with you. It is recommended to drink 8-10 glasses of fresh non-carbonated, non-caffeinated, non-sugary water each day.

Schedule Fun Time Boredom and stress can lead to overeating and weight gain. Take time to laugh, play and enjoy activities that bring you happiness. If you can’t find exactly what you are used to, try new things or join a club. Getting to know your new host country will lead to fun and exploration.
Get Back to Nature
9

RawVeganCakes The Story of Success How did you move to Zurich?
Who are your clients?
Answering briefly: I followed my heart… but of course there is a story behind it. My family lived in Switzerland many years ago, and later on we were coming to visit our relatives. Eventually I waited with this decision during 35 years, but then made it from one magical moment to another.
Friendly, beautiful people in and around Zurich. Vegans and non-vegans, curious and open-minded souls, kids and health-conscious adults… I get so much love from them, and I am thankful for every moment!
How did you start your business?
With two little kids I have all the tasks and daily routines of a mother. So, let’s say my free time is when I’m working and creating. Sometimes I escape to nature, which is just two minutes from where I live. In summertime I enjoy the Lake Zurich with my SUP.
Everything happened really fast and surprisingly easy. I moved here in July, but before that I was travelling to Zurich every month for few days. I made posts in Swiss-Hungarian social media groups and contacted restaurants, saying that I plan to settle down here and offering to try my cakes. I was so inspired ...and it worked! Simple but true – positive vibes attract more positivity.
What do you like about being self-employed? I used to work in a team, and then all has been changed. I had to learn a lot of new things and be more focused. For a self-employed this is a life-long lesson. Today I am flexible and can take a time off work on a simple Thursday, going with my kids to the Museum or the Zoo and avoiding the crowd. I can keep on being a free, creative person.
We are inviting you to our Workshops with Viktoria on the 9th of July and 18th of September

How do you spend your free time?
What is your formula of success? Be yourself as much as your current situation allows!
What would you advise to those who are wishing to start as an entrepreneur in Zurich? Don’t hesitate – it kills the action and the flow. Just put your foot on the first step of the staircase and move forward.
You will get to know the basics of healthy cooking, learn how to bake muffins and make vegan cakes. Each participant will get a set of selfmade sweets to take back home. For more details check Event Calendar (page 49) and our Meetup / Facebook groups.

What is Stråla Yoga?
S
tråla yoga is a blend of different disciplines, all based on natural movement and tai chi. This allows all practitioners to find the most suitable gestures for their body. Stråla is one of the most dynamic and modern forms of yoga. It was founded in 2008 and became popular very quickly. Unlike more traditional yoga styles, Stråla does not recite mantras or focus on the chakras. Poses are rarely held for more than a few seconds. The classes can be relaxing or dynamic, engaging the muscles of the body as a whole with softness and ease. By connecting breathing with movement, we arrive at a “flow state”, which helps us to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment, to

listen to our bodies and respond to their needs very accurately. There is no competition or correction in this practice, and each person is free to discover his body at his own pace. Stråla yoga provides an approach that adapts to each person and lets us be completely at ease, both on the mat and in life. The result? Amazing feeling in body and mind as well as confidence in heart. You will stay connected to your inside and shine outside! We are inviting you to our Stråla Yoga event with Kim on the 11th of July in Lausanne. It will be followed by a brunch and a city walk. How to Make the Best Impression on
Your First Date I’m Sharon, a certified relationship coach and matchmaker in Zurich. I help men and women who live in Switzerland to step outside their business lives, gain experience, open up to new relationships and start dating local people. I believe that true chemistry can only be felt face-to-face.
46 inZurich
Here are 5 tips on how you can make the best impression on your first date:
1
Meet on a weekend rather than on a weekday.
It’s important to be relaxed and focused on getting to know one another. That is why I recommend planning the first date on a weekend, after a good night’s sleep. Meet early enough as daytime opens many possibilities in terms of location and what to do.
All images are provided by the author © Sharon Eriksson / Marimar Leuchtmann
Relationships
2
Move around rather than stay in the same place.
My advice is to start outdoors. Meeting at the train station and walking together to a coffee shop will be a good option. After the first drink you can go to the next spot for a small lunch, dessert etc. Change of scenery and movement keeps the energy high and the conversation at flow.
something that 3 Wear makes you feel comfortable. Tastefully focus on a part of your body you are proud of. Being aware of it will give you a boost of confidence.
passionately 4 Becurious. You are a blank piece of paper in the eyes of a person you are meeting for the first time. Make it count! Talk about topics you feel most passionate about and ask your date what he or she loves doing. It will bring the best out of you both!
Whether you want to create a family, break the pattern of unhappy past relationships, or start dating after a divorce, I am here to introduce you to a new kind of dating and help you achieve your personal relationship goals. Don’t waste your time and money attending every singles party in town or signing up for online dating sites – focus on quality, not quantity. My clients benefit from support in all important aspects: looking for love, beginning a new romance and building a longterm relationship.
At the end of the day thank 5 send your date and, after a while, a sweet follow-up. I cannot emphasise enough on how important this part is! Whether all went good or not, thank your date for the time you have spent together. This act itself can reverse the way someone feels. One or two days later send a small message – something light, funny, cute... Such gesture doesn’t require much effort, but it keeps a window open in case you choose to reconnect.
