What?! Riedmatt! Riedmatt Center is a very popular place among people of all ages. No wonder that Swiss-based Influencers love it too! In January Riedmatt Center has welcomed a team of famous Instagrammers. They’ve challenged Aladdin Room at Mission: Escape, had lots of jumping fun at FLIP LAB and tested their team spirit at Boda Borg. After the event we’ve asked them about their impressions.

Sabrina Drescher sabrina.drescher onescreener.com/ sabrina-drescher What did you like most about Mission: Escape? You have to involve logical thinking and always work as a team. We had an unforgettable adventure with many unexpected twists and turns. About FLIP LAB? I simply loved everything! Can’t spend enough hours there! At FLIP LAB you do feel like a child again and can go really wild! About Boda Borg? Our team was awesome, we really challenged and pushed each other! It is amazing how competitive we’ve become. Nobody wanted to give up when we were close to solving a mission! How people should choose different Riedmatt formats? FLIP LAB is definitely the right one for families with kids. If children are older, Mission: Escape will be a good choice too. Groups of friends should go to Boda Borg. Both Mission: Escape and Boda Borg are suitable for team building. What is your favourite format? I love them all! Which format will you visit again? I will definitely visit Mission: Escape, FLIP LAB and Boda Borg soon!

What did you like most about Mission: Escape? I really enjoyed Aladdin Room – it’s a very dynamic space, where players can test and explore things together. Escape room is not just a brain teaser, but also a perfect team activity. About FLIP LAB? Jumping on different trampolines was a great joy! I also like that there is always an instructor on location, he can show you different tricks and explain how to implement them in practice. About Boda Borg? The range of rooms is amazing! If you don’t like some topic, it is easy to switch to the next one. I played this type of quests for the first time and loved it straight away. I found ‘Stress Ball’ room quite fun – at fourty seven you rarely have the opportunity to climb a pile of giant exercise items. How people should choose different Riedmatt formats? FLIP LAB is a good place to visit with kids or as a couple, Mission: Escape is suitable for a company of friends and for team building. Small groups are sure to have a fantastic time at Boda Borg. What is your favourite format? The classic escape room is at the top of my list! Which format will you visit again? All three! The choice of a format for each particular day will depend on my accompanying persons.

What did you like most about Mission: Escape? I loved the set up, which got us in the mood to solve riddles. It was really exciting to fight our way through the room. About FLIP LAB? A big number of various trampolines was an absolute highlight! Ninja Warrior trail is also very cool, I’ve tried such parcourse before and enjoyed it a lot. About Boda Borg? For me it was a new experience, but after receiving instructions and completing the first quest I got totally involved. There are many different rooms, and each time you embark on a new adventure. How people should choose different Riedmatt formats? Families with children will love FLIP LAB, because it is

easy to have fun there – the little ones will burn energy and sleep well in the evening afterwards! Boda Borg is good for the family with teenagers. All three formats are suitable for groups of friends. Mission: Escape is definitely a right thing for couples, as much as FLIP LAB with its physical activities. At Boda Borg you can experience team building in the best possible way, and Mission: Escape is good for this as well. What is your favourite format and why? It’s difficult to say, each one has something special about it. I’ve especially enjoyed Mission: Escape because I love solving puzzles. Which format will you visit again? As mentioned before, all Riedmatt formats are great, and I will definitely come back to visit them all. A big thank you to everyone who made this fun day possible for us!

Surviving Switzerland Important Tips One Should Not Miss Even if you come from a neighboring country, you will notice that several things are done differently in Switzerland. Here are some recommendations that can help you navigate Switzerland and its (un)written rules.

Travels • Use public transportation or cycle. Parking places in Zurich city are limited and very expensive! Carpooling is another good alternative to owning a vehicle. • Get a yearly subscription for a Half-Fare Travelcard, which will enable you to use public transportation with a 50% discount. • Download the SBB app and check for “Super Saver” tickets if you know the exact day and time of the trip. • Expect public transportation to be on time just as the person you are meeting. Try to arrive at least five minutes early to make a good impression everywhere you go. Punctuality is crucial! • Greet people you meet on hiking paths and in small villages.

14 inZurich

Prepared by Samantha Aeschbach thezurichinsider thezurichinsider.com

Apartments • Apply for an apartment as you would for or your dream duction job (prepare an introduction letter, references, all required documents etc.). ry room rules! • Know the holy laundry Washing machines and tumble dryers are usually located in the basement of your apartment building. Use them only when it’s your turn (pre-register) and leave the machines as spotless as you have found them (that includes removing all the lint from the filter).

Society

Food • Few hours before closing time, groceries will discount certain food items. Look out for the orange stickers. • Many restaurants offer pretty affordable lunch menus. • Tipping is optional, as service charges are included in the price tag. However, it is always welcomed. • The Swiss love to have an after-work Apero! This usually involves some alcoholic beverages and snacks. Apero-time is the solution to all: getting together with work colleagues, celebrating one’s birthday or anything else.

Rest • Sundays are for rest, which means that shops are closed (last-minute buys are possible at the major train and petrol stations). • The Swiss prefer to plan everything – even “spontaneous” gatherings are usually pre-scheduled. • If you have a house party, it is important to inform your neighbors in advance. Affix a notice at the entrance to your building or tell them personally. • Get to know your new home and make friends. Join a local club or two, visit expat events, take advantage of free entries to many museums and cultural events – it will pay off in the long run. Network, network, network!

Recycling • Trash must be put into a specific taxed bag that you can buy at any grocery store in your city. Recyclables such as glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, tins, batteries, organic waste must all be disposed of separately. • Bring a reusable bag everywhere you go, as many places charge you for shopping bags. Some coffee shops started to do the same with cups. Sustainability is vital not only to protect the planet, but also your wallet!

Insider tips

The New New The founders of The New New stand for the decluttering trend. That’s because in their shop in district 6 Michèle Roten and Lucy Prader only sell clothes that people no longer want. This includes everything from designer blazers to fast fashion shirts.

Sprössling When Yasi Gnädinger’s bakery created a vegan croissant, it became a firm favourite among customers. Would a completely plant-based café prove to be just as successful? Yasi gave it a shot, establishing Sprössling and putting a vegan spin on everything from latte macchiatos to doughnuts and burgers.

Hellozurich: Our Favourite Places in Kreis 6 Whether it’s a vegan bakery, a trendy second-hand shop or an award-winning Michelin restaurant – the choices in Kreis 6 are wide-ranging and colourful. We would like to show you our five preferred places.

Mesa “No problems finding us?” This is how Sebastian Rösch always greets his guests. Mesa may have been awarded a Michelin star and 16 Gault Millau points, but from the outside it looks like a nondescript local pub. Sebastian serves the kind of food that he likes to eat himself: “I’m immune to trends,” he says.

Miyuko Everyone’s talking about Sara Hochuli’s amazing cakes! She has attracted a celebrity clientele, and many big companies have also fallen in love with her extraordinary creations. This bubbly businesswoman has now settled (for a while!) in Miyuko, the little café where she invites the guests to enjoy afternoon tea or one of her special breakfasts, known as Gnüsser Zmorge.

Kleine Freiheit Residents of Zurich’s Kreis 6 have been enjoying their Kleine Freiheit – a small alternative bar located in the Weinbergpark – since summer 2013. It is run by Rea Zaverdinos and her right-hand person Anna Rotter. Together, the two women have turned their bar into an attractive venue with sunshades, flowers and brunch. Kleine Freiheit is open all year round. Prepared by hellozurich AG 16 inZurich

Culture

Famous Foreigners in the History of Zu Zurich urich Long a country of emigrants rather than immigrants, Switzerland has welcomed dissidents, revolutionaries, artists, refugees, students and many more over the recent centuries. Here is a short list of those who chose Zurich as a new home, each finding their mis/fortune.

Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) In 1760, Casanova arrived in Zurich unwillingly and, to save his soul and neck, he decided to become a monk after visiting the magnificent Einsiedeln Monastery. Although he believed that Swiss German was anything but romantic, he fell head over heels for a beautiful – albeit married – lady from Solothurn and decided otherwise. Still, this is another story!

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Exiled in Zurich for nine years, Wagner started to work immediately upon his arrival as his fame preceded him. He found a wealthy patron of the arts and fell in love with a wife… not his own, though! The torrid affair became an inspiration for his famous “Tristan and Isolde” opera. Much as Wagner liked Zurich at first, he got the feeling of being constrained and isolated by the “small” city over time.

Culture

Thomas Mann (1875-1955) World-renowned writer visited Zurich for the first time in 1905 together with his wife, Katja. Switzerland quickly turned into their favourite travel destination. When Katja was diagnosed with tuberculosis, they travelled to Davos, and this experience found reflection in Mann’s novel, “Der Zauberberg” (The Magic Mountain). After receiving Nobel Prize for Literature Thomas Manns has left Germany and spent several periods living in Zurich. He was buried at the cemetery in Kilchberg. The author left his works to the ETH Zurich.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) Perhaps the most famous pupil and professor at ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and the University of Zurich in the collective consciousness outside of the academic world. Born in Germany, he became a citizen of Zurich and thus a Swiss citizen in 1901; the same year Einstein gained his ETH diploma. He lived in Zurich at six different addresses over several years.

James Joyce (1882-1941) Yet another artist who was welcomed as an asylum seeker (WWI) and found great inspiration in Zurich. Joyce is buried in the Fluntern cemetery. His native country, Ireland, which he had not seen since he fled in 1912, envisioned bringing back his remains by 2022 to mark the 100th anniversary of his book Ulysses. As of now, unsuccessfully. At the confluence of the river Sihl and Limmat the names are misspelled as “Sjhl” and “Ljmmat” – this is an installation made by Zurich artists as a tribute to Joyce.

Drinks

Vegan Wine Myths and Truths Many wine bars and retailers have started to market their drinks as vegan friendly in response to the growth of veganism. Here are some things you should know about it.

All wine is vegan Myth! Despite wine being made of grape juice, a lot of it isn’t vegan at all. This is due to some traditional fining agents, which are used to speed up the clarification process. Among them are gelatine (obtained from animal skin), albumen (egg whites), casein (milk proteins) and isinglass (derived from fish bladders). Other animal products used in wine production may include beeswax to seal bottles and agglomerated corks with milkbased glues.

Vegans can drink wine

Vegan wine doesn’t taste differently

No wine can be considered 100% vegan

Truth! It tastes just like any other wine, so you will likely find good and bad sorts. Vegan wine is made in the same way, using the same grapes, and the only difference is its fining process.

Myth! Yes, there is always a certain number of insects, which unavoidably end up in the press. Still, it is not relevant for vegan certification, because products with animal traces that get into the product unintentionally are not part of the recipe.

Manufacturing of vegan wine is not too complex Truth! Winemakers either leave the particles to sink naturally to the bottom of the wine, or use non-animal fining products – such as bentonite, pea protein and silica gel.

Truth! They can, although it is always best to check with the supplier. According to current regulations in the EU and US, wine makers are not obliged to list information on all animal derivatives they use.

Organic wines are always vegan friendly Myth! Organic and biodynamic refers to the way in which the grapes are grown, not the processing involved.

Shopping

DEVI DELI göttlich vegan From an idea we got during Stockholm holiday in 2014 to the first vegan deli in Zurich – this is how our shop was born! And YES, WE GAN! is our motto.

The plan was to create a hip, lively, y, crowded, people- and animal-friendly place. And then, of course, the business strategy had to be a spiritual one because of our own years of becoming conscious. We are Karin, the idea spinner, and Denise, the customer whisperer – partners in life, love and business, 52 and 67 years old, senior HR controller and senior HR consultant. We’ve financed the whole thing ourselves because autonomy and independence are extremely important to us.

What is DEVI DELI famous for:  We love people! All our customers are greeted warmly, and we always take time for them.  Personality matters the most for us. We value real abilities and passions, not the certificates. That’s why we have a stable, mega-diverse team with many years of experience and also trainees who make their first attempts at work.  We believe that authenticity is the new professionalism, which means that we try all products ourselves before offering them to the clients.  We work closely with our “tiny vegan food entrepreneurs”, who produce unique delicacies in their private certified kitchens. Our vegan pâtisserie is full of unique cupcakes, brownies, macarons, muffins, cinnamon rolls – and a large part of it is raw, sugar and gluten free.  We have premium products from all over Switzerland. There is a huge vegan cheese counter with hard and soft, blue and white mould, subtle and ripe, cashew, and coconut oil sorts... you name it! In addition, we offer the tastiest vegan alternatives to salami, carpaccio, sausages. And, of course, we have great vegan wines!

You Can Leave Your Hat On Advices From the Personal Stylist

1

Hello, is it me you’re looking for?

Be clear about which features of your personality you want to manifest. Boil it down to five adjectives – you can translate these into unique style through shapes, colours and textures. Add to them your mid-term goals – be it family, career, art or anything else. Let your wardrobe work for you and not vice versa!

2

Everybody rock your body!

 Do we all want to look good?  Do we wish to be unique?  Are we conscious about our planet?

Yes! Then it is time to take control over your wardrobe

There is no such thing as an imperfect figure, but some don’t know their most flattering fit. And then there are colours that override your natural palette in contrast with those that make your eyes shine and your skin glow. Fear not, this one is very easy to nail! Once you discover your colours and a perfect style, you’ll stop getting clothes which are destined to sleep on your shelf.

3

Sell me a coat!

With that in mind, you are now able to audit your wardrobe. What lives in it? Is it telling your story correctly? My recommendation: act season by season. Select the items that are the right fit for your personality, body and lifestyle. Some of them can be saved with a little help from a tailor. As for unnecessary pieces – sell, gift or donate those which are in a good condition. Consider upcycling if you’re in a creative mood! Some items that have been worn out can be sent for recycling.

4

I’m just tryin’ to do my jigsaw puzzle…

Make a list of garments that are missing for a complete wardrobe. From now on, don’t buy impulsively anymore: your items need to mix and match perfectly. This way you will have a virtually endless number of looks with a limited number of pieces. Consider vintage and upcycled items first. They are unique – and much better for the planet too. When this is not an option, go for high quality pieces that will serve you over a long time.

5

Spice up your life!

Be creative when it comes to combining your pieces into an outfit. Even a simple shirt can be worn in at least ten different ways. Show your personality, express your mood, experiment – only imagination is the limit. And don’t forget about the accessories!

1 Modern The perfect lines are the order of the day. Mixed with technology and innovative materials, modern style is the primary choice in many homes. — To implement it: use marble tables, metal lamps and wallpapers with stone or wood motives.

Modern Living Spaces: Top 6 Styles Mid-Century Modern It is very much beloved by the Swiss thanks to the influence of Le Corbusier in the city. The concept of recycling and the dialogue of the interior with nature helps to make Mid-Century Modern into an established style.

3

— To implement it: generate an open area, give importance to common spaces and integrate Bauhaus canvases.

2

Minimalism Japan gave us the gift of this style, and it has remained in many homes since the 60s. It brings the expression of modernism in the purest form thanks to basic elements in space. — To implement it: stick to palette of hushed tones, lots of natural light and few lines of visual movement.

In the last issue we talked about the home office and how to make it comfortable. But what about the rest of the house? Today I would like to introduce to you the top 6 style trends and advice how to implement them at home.

Scandinavian Simplicity, efficiency and functionality are parts of this style. It experienced a big boom and still remains among most favourite designs. Characterized by organic shapes, Scandinavian style tries to give off cosiness through soft materials and light tones. Black is presented for counterbalancing.

Why shall we hide beams, pipes or conducts? Functionality is the adjective for this style! The iron and steel mixed with recycled furniture and robust wood will give us the New Yorker style vibration. — To implement it: paint the kitchen in black and let metal shine from the ceiling!

What will be your next boost improvement? Connect with me on Instagram and let me know!

5 To implement it: dare with a shaggy rug, put your feet on it and enjoy!

Urban Zurich is an energetic city, and many wonderful people are living here. This contributes to the style as it encompasses contemporary, modern and industrial elements. The softness allows us to feel more welcomed at home.

6

— To implement it: go for strambotic elements – maybe bought from original country – and give the accent into the space.

Gabriella Prokai and Her Passionate Art The Story of Success There are naturally gifted painters in this world, and Gabriella Prokai is definitely one of them! Born in Hungary, she moved to Zurich and conquered it by storm with her authentical, sensual works of art. Today Gabriella is our special guest. She willingly shared with us her great story.

Gabriella, how did you start painting?

When did you move to Zurich?

It was a kind of fate. About twenty-five years ago I’ve been looking for pictures to decorate my walls. I couldn’t afford the best ones and decided to create my own works. This have changed my life fundamentally! Ever since I couldn’t stop painting. Over time, my unmistakable style got crystallized, and I reinvent it with each series of new pictures.

Six years ago I’ve relocated from the Puszta region, which is lowlands in southern Hungary, to Switzerland. The pulsating city of Zurich, the extraordinary landscape and the reserved manner of the Swiss have always fascinated me. I hoped that a complete change of scenery and new experiences will increase my creativity and broaden my horizons. Luckily, I didn’t get disappointed. I met new people and felt at home very quickly.

How did you create your gallery in Switzerland? The LAPROKAY.ART gallery in Neerach is embedded in our private space. I use the extraordinary atmosphere to present my works in a familiar setting. Various art enthusiasts from all over Europe have visited us since the opening. They are very much appreciating the homely ambience of the gallery.

their home or office with distinctive wall decorations. From a firefighter to a university lecturer, from a craftsman to an entrepreneur – everybody is included. Young people often come to exhibitions, take a selfie with one of my paintings and post it on social media. So I would say that my art appeals to those who are young – or at least young at heart.

How do you spend your free time? I have been working independently in various industries for over two decades. The boundary between work and leisure is fluid. I fill my batteries by taking care of our small garden or doing sports. Every now and then we have a “holiday dog” visiting us, which I enjoy because I like animals very much. I like to travel to foreign countries and get ideas from new cultures. All these impressions flow unconsciously into my paintings.

What’s your formula of success? What inspires you the most? I am primarily inspired by the matter of colours and also by my curiosity to create something new. I often use women as motives, because in this way I can express my emotions and process my own femininity to the canvas.

Who is a typical buyer of your art? The main thing about my customers is that they cannot be classified. However, they all want to embellish

The art scene is huge, and there are a lot of very good artists. I regularly visit exhibitions and trade fairs to see other people’s creations. However, I don’t follow every art trend and pursue my own style.

security. Friends and family who support you emotionally in your endeavours play very important role as well. There are always ups and downs, every self-employed person has to be aware of that. Still, you should never stop believing in yourself!

What would you advise to those who want to start their own business in Zurich? You will need a lot of courage to take risks and a lot of strength not to give up. Certainly, it is comforting to have some financial

6 Investment Tips for Expats in Switzerland Negative interest rates, inflation and of course the magic of compound interest... There are many good reasons why you should rather invest long-term instead of keeping all money in your bank account.

1

Build a cash buffer

This tip is applicable for everyone inside and outside Switzerland. Life is unpredictable; thus, you should always build a “cash buffer” before starting to invest. Make sure to have enough finances for urgent situations, so that you won’t touch existing investments if your car breaks down or in case you lose your job. The necessary amount will be equal to 4-6 times of your typical monthly spendings.

3

Don’t time the market

There is not much sense in waiting for the perfect moment to invest because most likely you will miss it. Times of crisis are often mentioned as the right point, but they are hard to predict. Every day is a good day to begin if you invest regularly (e.g. monthly) because overall you will get a more stable average profit.

2

Open pillar 3a account

The first thing you should do after building a cash buffer is opening a pillar 3a account. Even as an expat you can take advantage of the Swiss pension system. Money that you transfer into pension account can be directly deducted from your income taxes. Even though these funds are usually blocked until your retirement, you can withdraw them earlier in case you would leave Switzerland.

4

Be boring

All experts agree that the most influential investors are boring. Finance trends and success stories pop up every week, but the fact is that most people jump on the hype train too late and lose money. Be tedious, build a strategy and follow it thoroughly. A good choice is Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) – you invest into many companies at the same time and spread your risk very broadly. Of course, it is possible to put a part of your money into risky assets, but never gamble with your life savings!

5

Take the risk you can, not the risk you want

The most common mistake of beginners is taking too much risk. You may want to venture, but it doesn’t mean that you’re actually able to do so. Risk is very individual, it depends on your financial situation, your age and your attitude.

6

Don’t listen to your emotions

Fear, euphoria, greed and panic are the biggest enemies of a successful investor. Stay constant no matter if the market goes up or down. Don’t invest because you’re hungry for more and never follow trends just because your emotions tell you to do so. Stick to your plan and you will benefit in the long run.

Need help creating an investment strategy? Start with selma.com and get a personal plan. You can use the code “zurichfriends” to invest your first CHF 5`000 for free over a year.

How to Find the Right Partner? Have you been single for quite a while now? Would you like to meet somebody in real life, but don’t know where to begin? Are you reluctant, making same negative experiences?

The search for a partner is a question of technic and inner positioning. In order to meet the right person, you need to be clear about the essential qualities he or she must have, so that your lives can fit together. Often it is easy to figure out what you don’t want anymore, but this does not define what you actually do want. Taking the time to understand which kind of relationship you need is the key to finding the right partner. Question yourself on how it should be: whether you want to live with this person, what kind of activities would you like to do together etc. If you’re passionate about sports, will you prefer to exercise with your partner or rather alone? If you have a large family, do you need to see your relatives often and will you be eager to eat at your in-laws’ house regularly? Do you wish to be with

Not having the Disclaimers

Forgetting to do a proper name search

These statements limit your liability. Disclaimers are very important as without them you open your business to potential lawsuits. They must be prominently placed on several pages of your website to ensure that your viewers see them.

It’s not enough to check on your preferred domain name – the chosen business name must be available as well. You may lose both if someone comes forward and claims ownership over the trademark.

5

Using free web-generated Privacy Policy Copying online templates is a big no! Privacy Policy is your own declaration – it is how you process data. Hence, this will differ from one business to another. Free website Privacy Policies are general templates, and providers expect you to customize them.

Pro-Tip: Privacy Policy Declaration may also be required if you have a Facebook group, which collects personal information.

Legal Mistakes Website Owners Make Running a business can be exciting. However, we often forget legal fundamentals. As a website owner in Switzerland, you have the responsibility to avoid making these common mistakes:

Lacking Terms and Conditions

Forgetting to write an Impressum

Whatever type of business you have, Terms and Conditions section is a must! It dictates exactly how your website should be used, what is allowed and what is prohibited. Just like other contracts, it should be customized, and visitors must agree to all Terms and Conditions before accessing your website.

Since 2012, all business websites in Switzerland have the legal obligation to provide an Impressum. It must include all vital information about your identity and contact details of the business. Without them you can face large fines.

Pro-Tip: Business Facebook Pages must have an Impressum as well.
