Art, Music and being Active through Exploration are some of my favorite things and boy are we lucky that our area offers a huge variety of all of these!

spiration. This beautiful, rugged land of giant glacial lakes, dense forests, and abundant trail-systems provides endless opportunities for exploration and creativity.

Unique & Fun Attractions in the Northwoods

Add a dash of adventure and thrills to your next Northwoods trip this summer. In this selection, we’ll take you to soaring heights, bring you back to terra firma, and finally take you underground. Listed is a sample of the many attractions that will get the adrenaline flowing.

Ziplines

Not quite up in the clouds but nor on earth are the ziplines we all love.

Northwoods Zip Line, Aerial Trek, Argo ATV tour, kayak river tour, wilderness group dynamics, and more. All tours are guided. They have a total of 13 zip lines, 14 aerial trekking obstacles, 4 adventure bridges, 2 zips that go over a lake, side-by-side dual race zip, and more.

Trollhaugen’s Adventure Park in Dresser has an aerial challenge course and zip line park tour. The park provides the thrill of playing on a giant, floating playground. Imagine climbing trees, hanging from tires, and swinging on ropes just like when you were a kid, but on a far bigger scale and creative environment. The aerial challenge course offers 7 different circuits and 5 levels of difficulty. The zip line tour offers 6 ziplines across multiple platforms, and also features a dual zip for tandem thrills with a friend.

Drivers Start your Engines!

Go-karting is one sport in which kids can outrace their parents. And they don’t need a driver’s license.

Rock their world by taking them to Holiday Acres Recreational Park in Minocqua. Holiday Acres boasts three excellent tracks, including the original Super Track. Each track has different features where the Mario Andretti set – young and older – can zoom around hairpin curves, carve a path up the hills and zip across bridges as they race friends and family.

Rocking W Stable and Kartway theme park in Eagle River give families the most fun together this summer. Kartway offers go-kart racing, Naskart racing, slick track (they also have a zip line). Big Track is their most competitive track, a circle-8 with varying karts suited for both double and single riders. Ride the Slick Track and you’ll be a pro at drifting before you know it. Head over to the oval track if you’re a real speed demon or a NASCAR-wannabe. Mini-“Jeeps” suit those not quite ready for full size go-carts.

Tubing & AdventuresPaddling

You’ve seen them sliding down a hill in the winter. Now see them in the summer! We’re speaking of inner tubes, and they’re an essential part of floating down the river. But that’s the mild side of fun; wild is when you hit the whitewater.

In Vilas County, Hawks Nest Outfitters will rent you a tube, kayak or raft. They will also take you to the launch point on the Wisconsin River and pick you up at the takeout.

A paddle on the scenic Namekagon River can be found at Jack’s Canoe & Tube Rental in Trego. In addition to rentals, including kayaks, they provide full shuttle service to all of the Namekagon and most of the St. Croix River landings. Jack’s offers delivery and pickup service to most local lakes.

Step it up a notch by riding the whitewater roller-coaster, including the rapids on the Peshtigo and Menominee rivers in Marinette County. Among outfitters offering a canoe, raft or kayak ride are Kosir’s Rapid Rafts, Thornton’s Rafting Resort and Campground, and Wildman Adventure Resort. Another suggestion is Wausau Whitewater Park in Wausau where a dam provides a constant flow of water regardless of weather. You and a team of 20 friends and family can also take part in the annual Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival races set for Saturday, August 19.

Down, Down Down We Go

Lastly, we take you underground to experience what it’s like to be in a once-working mine shaft.

At Adventure Mine near Greenland in the U.P. you can experience copper mining as it was in the 1800s. You will traverse underground wearing a hardhat with headlamp. Four guided tours are offered: a 45-minute underground walk, an 80-minute underground hike, a three-hour underground tour that includes rappelling down an 80- foot shaft, and a six-hour long excursion to the second level of the mine. See large stopes and inplace copper specimens, as well as other features and mining remnants.

Oconto County is BIG on Fishing

OCONTO COUNTY - Whether you’re seeking a relaxing day enjoying the area’s waterways or you’re a hard-core angler looking to land a lunker, Oconto County is the place to be with some of the best fishing opportunities in the state.

The quality fishing opportunities in Oconto County have not gone unnoticed with several major fishing tournaments on tap for 2023. Among those, The Master Walleye Circuit will take place in Oconto on July 21-23. While the AIM Weekend Walleye Series will be hosting another tournament in Oconto slated for Aug. 25-26. If you’re up for the competition, you can register for the tournaments by visiting their websites.

Walleye fishing usually kicks off on the Bay of Green Bay tributaries in late March or early April, depending on the weather. In June and July, schools of walleye make their way to mid-lake flats and reefs. From August through November, anglers head to the north part of the Bay to catch trophy walleyes in the 25- to 33-inch range.

In addition to the Bay itself, there are a number of rivers and tributaries in Oconto County that deliver phenomenal walleye runs. Machickanee Flowage near Oconto Falls offers walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish, in addition to trout and salmon. The same goes for the Oconto River. These various river systems provide an opportunity to fish all spring and even provide opportunities for shore fishing, but if you want a chance at your personal best, the Bay of Green Bay is the place to go. Big water = big fish!

If walleye isn’t your fish of choice, the 378 lakes in Oconto County also offer plenty of trout, panfish, bass and northern pike. There are tremendous opportunities for any skill level, and if you don’t have equipment, area fishing guides can put you on the honey holes. Get Ready for The Race

CRANDON - The annual Forest County Potawatomi Brush Run is a thrilling event happening on June 23-25 that attracts Championship off-road racers and spectators from all over the region. Taking place in beautiful Crandon, Wisconsin, the 30th annual Brush Run is considered the “Crown Jewel” of off-road racing and offers a full day of exciting action on the dirt track. Racers compete in a variety of classes and the atmosphere is electric especially at Saturday Night Thunder! Local vendors offer food, drinks and souvenirs throughout the day. Free LIVE MUSIC concerts are offered on Friday and Saturday night. If you’re a thrill-seeker or just looking for a fun day out with family and friends, the Brush Run is not to be missed!

Make the Minocqua Museum a ‘Must Visit’ on Your Summer ‘To Do’ List

MINOCQUA - The Minocqua Museum in Minocqua is a hidden gem that offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Northwoods region. Join the Fun at the Lupine Junefest Bike Tour in Mercer

MERCER - Join the 17th annual Lupine Junefest Bike Tour in Mercer on Saturday, June 10. The excitement begins at the W. S. Carow Park in Mercer and runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Participants celebrate the blooming of the Lupine Wild Flower in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin!

Race organizers have mapped out several scenic routes, including 10-mile, 28-mile and 50-mile road rides and a pick-your-distance trail ride that will take bicyclists on paved roads through rolling hills and past lakes, rivers, forests, wildlife and miles of blooming lupines throughout the southern part of Iron County.

Ready to join this ride? Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with a group ride starting at 8:00 a.m. The $40 registration fee includes a t-shirt, goodie bag, snacks, lunch coupon, water and SAG vehicle support. There’s also an early packet pick-up from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 9th at Carow Park where you can discuss the bike routes and get acquainted with event organizers and fellow riders.

After the ride, enjoy lunch and drinks from the concession stand as you listen to live music with a beautiful view overlooking Grand Portage Lake.

Celebrating 70!

WOODRUFF - Have you heard the story of the “Million Penny Parade,” or high school geometry teacher Otto Burich, who was the force behind the 1953 parade, or Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, widely known as the “Angel on Snowshoes?”

It’s all spelled out at the Dr. Kate Museum in Woodruff. Nearby at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Hemlock Street, is the “World’s Largest Penny,” which was constructed to commemorate the success of the “Million Penny” campaign in 1953 to raise funds to construct the original local hospital. Relive the ‘Resort Era’ at Antique & Classic Boat Show

MINOCQUA - The Minocqua Antique & Classic Boat Show will once again delight spectators when owners of these classic beauties line up along the Minocqua Chain of Lakes on Friday and Saturday, June 16 & 17.

These resort-era vessels – the likes of Chris Craft, Gar Wood, Century, Hutchinsin – will be coming from all corners of the upper Midwest for this annual event. The wooden runabouts with their powerful inboard engines, churning out a soul-stirring rumble, harken back to the 1930s and 40s when they ruled the waters in the Northwoods resort communities.

This in-water and on-land show will be headquartered at Torpy Park, downtown Minocqua, where piers will accommodate some two dozen wooden boats and the lawn will be host to even more watercraft. The public is invited to walk on the docks and around the park to view the interiors of the finely-crafted boats, and talk with the owners. (While the owners will be cruising the lakes, no rides will be available for the public due to liability concerns.)

There will also be a display of 1960s-70s classic fiberglass Tri Hull runabouts on the park grounds. In all, there will be some 60 boats –large and small – either in the water or on land, says event director Marc Toigo of Minocqua Antique & Classic Boat Show LLC.

As an added bonus, the partnering Minocqua Lions Club will bring in top-rated performers for 2 days of LIVE MUSIC. The Minocqua Lions will also be providing food and beverages both days. The event will raise money for local charitable organizations.

Friday’s boat show hours are noon to 8:00 p.m. There will be food, including a “can’t miss” old-fashioned shore lunch fish fry starting at 3 p.m., beverages, merchandise and clothing available for purchase. Crowd favorite singer/songwriter Melissa Childers will play from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Captains of the boats will participate in a boat parade at 7:45 p.m. Friday, during the Min-Aqua Bats water ski show’s intermission. The ski show is held at the Aqua Bowl just 2 blocks away on the Island of Minocqua.

Saturday’s boat show hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The musical lineup includes country cowgirl, Bree Morgan, from 12 - 3 p.m. and Bootjack Road rocking their country tunes from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show. Siamang: A performance and sound that guests will never forget! You will have the opportunity to hear these silly monkeys as they fill up their air sack to call outwhich can be heard over 2 miles away!

Koi and Trout Feeding: Buy trout pellets from the feed machines and toss into the pond and see the entire surface come alive with a frenzy of trout or koi. Guests can just sit and relax in this peaceful and tranquil area.

Primates & Reptile Center: Featuring North American, Desert and Rainforest habitats. Learn about these creepy, crawly critters and come nose to nose to a lemur and hear them vocalize while the sloth’s siesta all day long.

William E. Gardner Educational Center: The educational center is full of amazing things to see and do. Lumberjacks Welcome Visitors to Woodruff

No matter how good a log roller is, he or she will end up in the water eventually. It’s a cold swim before those first few shows of the season.

WOODRUFF - Weeks before the official start of summer, Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows begins preparing for the upcoming season. 2023 will mark the 42nd year that Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows have been entertaining area visitors on Woodland Lake in downtown Woodruff.

A spin-off of the famous Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows that began in Hayward, the Woodruff show features the same world-class athletes in a performance that is identical in entertaining value to the Hayward venue. Preparing the site for the summer performances involves maintenance to guarantee the safety of performers, as well as guests. The climbing poles that rise 60 to 90 feet into the air are inspected and the pads are secured in place.

“When you are climbing that pole at record speed, the last thing you want on your mind is its stability,” says Cassidy Scheer, world champion pole climber.

The log dogs on which the lumberjacks stand and swing razor sharp axes in the event called the underhand chop are checked for structural safety. The specially turned cedar logs used for the logrolling and boom-run events are pulled out of storage and replaced if necessary.

The gear and equipment used by the lumberjacks are also checked for safety. Steel-toed boots, leather leg chaps, climbing belts and gaffs (the spikes on the side of a climber’s shoes) must be in tip-

top shape to protect the performers. They inspect and repair the special leather guards that are placed over a portion of saw blades to protect children as they cross-cut saw with the lumberjacks during the kids matinees.

In addition to the lumberjack gear, the show site is prepared for the throng of summer guests who arrive with the warm weather. Bleachers, walkways and the handicap ramp are checked and the landscaping is refreshed.

How about all the logs the lumberjacks saw and chop? Over 20 tons of aspen logs are hauled to the site throughout the summer. Logs need to be uniform in diameter and stripped of bark – the same guidelines adhered to in the Lumberjack World Championships.

The season starts Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend. The Lumberjacks are eager to entertain and display the athleticism they’ve worked hard to keep tuned during the winter months.

With everything checked out, cleaned up, and the staff eager to get another season underway, there is one element of the shows that cannot be controlled. BAYFIELD - Plan on making at least one trip up to Mt. Ashwabay for live music this summer! Located 3 miles south of downtown Bayfield, Mt. Ashwabay is a ski hill during the winter but all summer long you can take in one of more than 50 nights of live music and entertainment under the Big Blue Tent, officially known as Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua (sha-ta-qwa).

This non-profit performing arts organization operates an intimate 900 seat, canvas tent theater. Big Top produces and presents a summer season of concerts, interactive lectures, and features original shows from their highly acclaimed professional local ensemble - The Blue Canvas Orchestra (BCO). Alongside talent from the region, Big Top continuously features nationally known artists. This year includes Michael Franti and Spearhead, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mat Kearney, Sierra Ferrell, Nickel Creek, and Killer Queen - A Tribute to Queen with more acts being added weekly. The tent season runs from June to September and runs educational outreach and produces performance broadcasts year-round.

When the warm summer nights allow the tent walls to be lifted you will see patrons enjoying the show and basking in the moonlight. The stars seem to have extra twinkle when the modern sound system is contrasted against the abundant natural surroundings.

If hunger should strike amidst the show, never fear, Mt. Ashwabay (BTC partner organization) has delicious local favorites such as Lake Superior White Fish Street Tacos and Scandinavian style bratwurst.

Cruise on over to the Chequamegon 100 Bike Race

CABLE - The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) is once again offering one of the Midwest’s most iconic mountain bike endurance races, the Chequamegon 100. On Saturday, June 17, riders can race along the singletrack of the Sawyer and Bayfield County Forests and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This race celebrates the CAMBA Trail System!

Participants can choose one of 4 distance options to match their personal endurance goals; approximately one hundred, sixty-five, thirty or fifteen miles of sweet northern Wisconsin dirt, with the great majority of each distance being on singletrack.

New to 2023 is the 15-mile MINI Cheq100! This should be a great event for those that want a little less time in the saddle! CAMBA is offering a registration discount for high school students on the 15-mile course. 2023 courses are subject to change and will be finalized a couple of weeks prior to the event.

The course is run on and permitted through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Sawyer County Forest, and Bayfield County Forest.

Join in after the race for the awards ceremony! Awards are presented to the top 3 in each race. The Big Question: Remodel or Rebuild a Lake Cabin?

Your cabin is a place for family gatherings, both young and old sharing life experiences like fishing and swimming. A place to get away from it all, take a break from the daily grind, and recharge the batteries. You might be a first-time cabin owner… or perhaps your cabin was handed down from parents or relatives. Either way, sooner or later, you are likely to want to make some updates to reflect your growing family or your changing needs. This will lead you to the Big Question: remodel or rebuild? We’ve identified 3 factors for you to consider as you begin to answer this question.

First, consider the quality of the “bones” of your cabin. What type of foundation does the cabin rest on, and what condition is it in? Does the cabin need updating to meet current codes and construction methods? Are your cabin’s plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems up to date? The quality of your home’s systems aren’t always visible to the eye, but are critical to the structure’s longevity. Yours may have been repaired or upgraded over the years… or not. How do those systems measure up against today’s standards?

If your cabin’s systems are reliable and modern enough to last well into the future, great! Cabins that have good bones, with relatively modern plumbing and electrical systems, are typically good candidates for a remodeling project. Or, if your cabin’s systems are outdated, now might be the right time to invest in the systems of the home such as updated electrical service and HVAC. Tying into an older system often brings headaches and extra cost, so you might find that rebuilding the cabin might give you more flexibility and lower total cost.

Second, think about the size of your cabin. Your lake home may have been intended to sleep one family, but the demand to lodge extended family or friends is all too common. Have parents and kids developed needs for greater space and privacy? Is the structure too small for the growing needs of your family?

If the overall size of the cabin meets your needs, that’s a good start… and remodeling can help you optimize the space you already have while maintaining your current setback. Or, if the size of your cabin doesn’t meet your current needs, you have options! Rebuilding your cabin gives you the most flexibility, but you could also consider remodeling and/or adding to what you already have. Either way, there will be setbacks and height require-

ments to consider, but working with an experienced architect can help you find a way to expand up and/or out to capture valuable square footage you don’t have today.

Third, assess the use of space within your existing walls. Your cabin might be an adequate size for your needs, but if the rooms are small and disconnected, or if they don’t make the most of the views, your home isn’t delivering its full potential. Logging Lore Comes Alive at Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows

HAYWARD - Logging has been a vital part of Wisconsin’s history dating back into the late 1800’s, and the life of the lumberjack remains a vivid element of Wisconsin folklore.

Before the days of rail roads and highways, loggers would often float their harvested logs down the rivers to the nearest sawmills. Lumberjacks would often have to go out on the floating mass of logs to clear jams that often occurred when floating wood down streams. Little did they know that their dangerous occupation would later become a demanding athletic pursuit.

Many of the Scheer kids’ family spent numerous summers balancing and rolling on the logs on Lake Hayward in the bay of Lumberjack Bowl…the home of the Lumberjack World Championships Competition. Their summer fun trained them to become fierce competitors in the logrolling event (birling) of the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held in Hayward every July. Eventually they expanded their activities and became skillful at the boom run and pole climbing, as well as other events that were part of the LWC.

In 1981, Fred and Robert Scheer established the original Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and used their lumberjack skills to entertain area tourists. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events, including log rolling, pole climbing and crosscut saw. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show and down-home humor has everybody chuckling.

The original venue for the show in 1981 was a small dock on the shore of Lake Hayward, behind what was then Windmill Square. The show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and it soon became apparent the production needed more space. In 1985 the Scheer brothers opened a second Show in Woodruff, WI and in 1988 they moved their Hayward Show to Lumberjack Village. The Hayward Show is now in its 43rd year of operation

Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show.

“If you’re doing what you love, then nothing else matters....until you fall into either of the lakes during the pre-season. Then being good at water sports matters,” jokes Deven Blair, show manager.

For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward and Woodruff, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Motorcycle Tour of Honor to Visit Wakefield Memorial

WAKEFIELD, MI - Located on the shoreline of Sunday Lake in Wakefield, MI, the Wakefield Area Veterans Living Memorial will be a featured stop on the 13th annual 50-state Tour of Honor Motorcycle Ride.
