This Summer, Buckle Up #ForFamily. You’ve Got Someplace to Be.
Mixologist of the Month
Jason Ehresmann
What’s your Drink of choice?
I really don’t drink a whole lot. But when I do, it would probably be my Cucumber Lavender Martini.
How would you describe Deadwood Social Club?
The vibes are very traditional, but creative. It’s a hidden gem.
What’s A highlight of your career?
I’m the first person in South Dakota (if not the Midwest) to create a Jelly Fish Shot with an aromatic bubble on the top of it. That’s what we’re well known for now & people will visit specifically for that shot.
Worst pickup line you’ve heard
Nowadays people are just blunt! Once a lady hit on me while her husband was downstairs playing poker.
Favorite downtime Activity?
I love spending time with my daughter or doing something outdoors with her.
Favorite type of patron?
The old time traveler; They always have the greatest stories & they’re easy to talk to. It’s fun because most of them are old timers that have never really seen the stuff I do. It’s my time to be like, “I want to show you something new.”

605 ROAD TRIP
HOT SPRINGS
For this year’s road trip, the 605 team piled into our van for a drive out to Hot Springs for the Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival. At dawn during the event, around 30 balloons launched into the everchanging horizon for spectators to watch.
605’s Cailyn Patterson and I had never been in a hot air balloon before this opportunity, and the experience was worth the early hours. Throughout the weekend, the team also had the chance to explore what Hot Springs had to offer for lodging, food, drinks, attractions, and more.
HISTORIC HOSPITALITY
Late Thursday night, the team arrived at The Historic Burdette House and hauled everything into our respective rooms, where we’d be staying for the weekend. Alana and John Snyder in one bedroom and Cailyn and I in the other. The 1891 rental has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and a spacious living room with fold-out couches.
FACT
The original Native American name for the Hot Springs area was "Minnekahta," which means "warm water."
The next morning, everyone explored the property. Out back includes a sauna, a pond with turtles, a firepit, and a playground.
Just a two-minute walk down the road is Springs Coffee, where the team grabbed caffeinated beverages and substantial breakfast burritos. Many of Hot Springs’ other businesses are also walkable from the Airbnb. Recharged and with full bellies, the 605 team headed down the street to our next stop.
WRITTEN BY DAWN GEERTSEMA + PHOTOS BY CAILYN PATTERSON AND ALANA & JOHN SNYDERSUIT UP
Relaxing music and aromatic scents washed over the team in the lobby of Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Spa . Soaking in the hot, mineral-rich pools was a soothing way to start the day.
The six pools range in temperature from 88-104 degrees. One of the pools was built in 1913, while the two newest ones were constructed last year to allow more people to enjoy Moccasin Springs year round.
If guests want to try a different spa experience, they offer aromatherapy, craniosacral therapy, various massages, reiki, facials, yoga, and more
The team stopped by Winner’s Circle —a restaurant and bowling alley—for a quick lunch and milkshakes to prepare to dive back into natural spring water.
TAKE THE PLUNGE
For those traveling with a bigger group of people or with children, Evans Plunge Mineral Springs offers a variety of family friendly activities, including two kiddie pools, volleyball, basketball, swing rings, slides, and the splash pad.
605's John Snyder tried his hand at swinging across the pool on the Tarzan Rings. It didn’t go as planned, but he had a blast at the attempt. Cailyn, John, and I also made sure to shoot down a couple waterslides.
Since it was founded in 1890, the spring-fed indoor mineral pool has been a destination for wellness. On site, guests can find hot tubs, a steam room, a sauna, the large indoor mineral pool, the outdoor pool, exercise classes, and a gym.
At the base of the indoor pool is natural river stone. Through this floor, spring water flows at 5,000 gallons per minute.
CHEF’S CHOICE
Once our stomachs started grumbling from all of our swimming, it was time for a gourmet meal at Buffalo Dreamer, which is located at Moccasin Springs.
Chef and owner Rebecca Christensen and her staff treated the team to an intimate dining experience with a range of menu items from small plates to entrées and finishing with dessert. We made sure to pair our meals with some wine, too.
Menu items vary with dishes including the Watermelon Jalapeño Salad , Cheese Plate, Swimming Angel, Steak of the Day, and Huckleberry Lime Tarts
Satisfied, I retired back to the Burdette House for a nap, Cailyn explored Hot Springs on foot, and the Snyders headed out on the town to check out Southern Hills Mercantile & Taproom

RISE + FLY
On Saturday, the four of us rubbed the sleep from our eyes before the sun had even thought of rising and headed to the Hot Springs Municipal Airport
At 5 a.m., the team checked into the Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival for our sunrise flights. Waiting for our flight time, we sipped coffee and munched on muffins.
As the sun rose into the sky and painted the horizon a rainbow of colors, so did about 30 hot air balloons. 605's Alana Snyder and I were flying with Garrett Williams, while Cailyn and John went with Hank Humiston
Soaring above it all, we took in the views and watched as the crowd of spectators grew, just enjoying the experience, though there were a few (literal) bumps along the way.
GOOD MORNING, SUNSHINE!
Once the team was safely back on the ground, it was time for more coffee and a bigger breakfast. Mornin’ Sunshine Coffee House & Boutique has an extensive breakfast menu with everything from burritos and sandwiches to French Toast and Corned Beef Hash
Alana opted for a drip coffee, I tried the Strawberry Smoothie, and Cailyn sipped on an iced Caramel Latte.
After 11 a.m., the locally sourced coffee shop serves a limited breakfast menu and offers lunch options.
TREAT YOURSELF
After a nap, exploring the town, browsing vendors, and walking by the iconic waterfall, the team worked up an appetite for something sweet. Naturally, it was time to try Two Cows Creamery + Bistro
Made with milk and cream from Stensland Family Farm, Melissa Holt creates over 120 flavors of ice cream. Customers can also try sorbet, gelato, and vegan iced treat options.
Alongside the 28 flavors available during the busy season and the 16 available during the down season is a full menu of meals. One of the most popular choices is the Build-a-Burger
Customers can purchase fresh produce, meat, and more at the creamery as well.
FACT
The owners of Minnekahta Coffee ran the Burdette House before the Ondrejkas bought it the summer of 2021.
LIGHT ‘EM UP
During the Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Glow Around Town is a can’t miss. Balloons were stationed at various locations throughout Hot Springs, including The Mammoth Site and Centennial Park
Entering Butler Park , the sight was one to behold. Tens of massive balloons stood, periodically lit up by the flames that kept them afloat.
Cue John Williams’ The Imperial March. Towering over the other balloons at seemingly twice the size, the Darth Vader balloon stood with the wise Yoda balloon just behind it.
The team made sure to track down their pilots from that morning for a quick hello before grabbing more souvenirs and heading back for an early night.
CAFFEINATION STATION
When the team woke up Sunday morning, we said goodbye to the owners of the Burdette House, and they wished us safe travels home.
After everything was packed into the Sprinter Van, one more stop remained: Minnekahta Coffee
John was stoked to try their coffee sampling station and choose the perfect roast to bring back to the office.
Cailyn and I grabbed a shirt each, and I stocked up on artisan snacks for the trip.
Souvenirs and snacks in hand, we buckled, hunkered down, and prepared for the long drive home.

Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival
written by D AWN GEERTSEMA photos by ALANA SNYDER & CAILYN PATTERSON605 TRIES
During the annual Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival, tens of hot air balloons inflate and soar into the sky as the sun rises, dotting the sky with a plethora of different colors. Below it all, rows and rows of spectators watch the event unfold.
“Watching all those balloons go up is pretty magical, and it’s a fun-filled weekend with lots to offer the whole family,” said Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce executive director Olivia
Mears. “It’s extremely affordable as the festival is essentially free.”
To view the event, patrons are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket to rest on and arrive early.
This year, the event will take place August 25-27. Throughout the weekend, check out food trucks, vendors, and more in Hot Springs. And don’t miss the Glow Around Town on Saturday night.
What to bring What to bring
Shrum's balloon launch recommendations:
+ Camera or phone
+ Chairs
+ Flashlight
+ Light Jacket or blanket
+ Plenty of patience
LET’S FLY
The 605 team headed to the Hot Springs Municipal Airport before 5 a.m. on Saturday for the opportunity to float into the horizon with a couple of the hot air balloon pilots.
Saturday and Sunday, there are typically balloon launches if the weather permits it, according to Mears.
“It’s a pretty unique experience in South Dakota to have that many balloons in one place at one time and enjoy that at no cost to the spectators,” said balloon-meister Tamie Shrum
Upon arrival, each member of the team signed in before heading over to grab some caffeine and muffins served by the Hot Springs Rotary Club. While we waited for the pilots to arrive, we browsed the large selection of hot air balloon gift items offered by Discover Balloons from New Mexico.
Next, the team headed over to meet our assigned pilots.
605’s Alana Snyder and I were passengers in pilot Garrett Williams’s basket, while Cailyn Patterson and John Snyder flew alongside seasoned pilot Hank Humiston
As Williams and his team inflated the balloon, Alana and I climbed into the basket, nearly missing takeoff as we were busy watching the surrounding balloons rise from the dewy grass.
“It was 30 hot air balloons and two special-shaped balloons,” said Shrum.
Williams says that as a game for the balloon pilots, there’s a target along the path where the pilots can drop a bean bag, trying to get closest to the target. Throughout the flight, we took in the view and captured a few fun photos.
Since it was Cailyn’s first flight, they experienced the tradition of popping champagne, catching the cork, and enjoying a sparkling glass upon landing.
While the majority of the balloons left the field, last year’s festival was lucky enough to have two special-shaped balloons present: Darth Vader and Yoda . They remained static on the field for spectators to get up close.
“Special shapes are more expensive to own and equally more difficult to fly, but we had the ability to have them as a favor,” said Shrum.
“The launches take place on the Saturday and Sunday mornings (weather permitting), but the festival actually starts at Centennial Park at noon on Friday.”

FESTIVAL FUN
During the festival, there are plenty of activities to keep anyone entertained.
“At Centennial Park, there are giant inflatables, obstacle courses, and games as well as the vendor market,” said Mears.
Vendors carry things like jewelry, décor, accessories, plants, gifts, and other merchandise. Each food truck offers menu items varying from cotton candy and shaved ice to tacos, Thai food, and American cuisine.
The Mammoth Site also offers a couple experiences for the event.
“Post launch on Saturday the Walk-in Balloon sets up at The Mammoth Site for a few hours,” said Mears. “This gives people the chance to see what the inside of a balloon looks like, and The Mammoth Site also hosts a day of fun activities including Mammoth Mini Golf, Science Fun, and a Fun Zone for kids.”
"The Hot Springs Chamber designed the festival specifically so that people could spend their money on accommodations, food, and shopping—they don’t have to pay for the entertainment.”

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
Saturday night, Hot Springs is lit up for the Glow Around Town. At various locations, hot air balloons are static, lighting up as the pilots keep their balloons inflated without lifting from the ground.
“It offers the locals to see it in their neighborhoods,” said Shrum.
Most of the balloons were stationed at Butler Park . As the sun sinks below the horizon, flames inside each balloon light up periodically, causing each balloon to glow bright in the dark night.
During this time, guests can wander around the park.
“It lets everyone in the neighborhood engage with the pilots,” said Shrum.
While the team was there, we got the opportunity to see all of the balloons lit up, including Darth Vader and Yoda.
We each paid a visit to our pilots. Alana even got the opportunity to try pulling the lever on the inflation device for one of the balloons, sending flames high into the night air.
MAKING A SPLASH EVANS PLUNGE MINERAL SPRINGS
Written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Alana Snyder & Cailyn PattersonOne of the oldest attractions in the Black Hills is Evans Plunge Mineral Springs in Hot Springs.
“We’ve been around longer than Mount Rushmore National Memorial,” said facility director Kris Hanson.
In 1890, Evans Plunge became a tourist attraction, drawing in visitors from far and wide who wanted to dip into the pool.
“Our claim to fame is the mineral water,” said Hanson. “It’s all about the water here. We have 13 springs that feed Evans Plunge, and water comes in 5,000 gallons a minute.”
As the water is fed into the pool, it maintains a natural temperature of 87 degrees year round.
“The temperature is especially great when you’re looking for aquatic rehab and therapies,” said Hanson.
Every 90 minutes, the pool has fresh water based on the flow from the springs, which flows in through the river stones on the pool floor and eventually makes its way into the Fall River behind the facility.
“No chlorine is needed because of that fast movement, which means no itchy skin, no crunchy hair, and you can open your eyes in the water,” said Hanson.
Today, the Plunge is open year round, and its wellness benefits are used for many things from family fun to exercise classes.
The facility houses the main indoor pool, an outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a sauna, a steam room, and a gym.
Families come to spend time playing in the water and on the equipment.
In the main pool, there are two large water slides, the Whale and the Jet. The Whale is a long, serpentine slide, and the Jet is tall and shoots riders down a near vertical drop into the water below.
Did You Know?
EVANS PLUNGE IS NAMED AFTER BUILDER FRED EVANS.
“If the kids are not tall enough, they can put on a life jacket and have someone who is 14 years or older go in the water to catch them when they come down,” said Hanson.
Hanging from the ceiling are the Tarzan Rings. These rings stretch across the top of the pool, and Hanson says there’s almost always a line of kids and adults wanting to try their strength.
For those that are too little to go down the big slides, there are other options.
“We have a kiddie slide inside in the three-foot pool,” explained Hanson. “You can slide down the frog’s tongue. There’s a one-foot area where we have a static whale.”
Water volleyball and basketball are also available to play.

In the summer months, guests have the option to spend time in the outdoor pool, into which another large water slide shoots swimmers onto the surface of the pool below.
During most of the day, there’s a limited lap lane available as well.
“In the morning, we don’t open our slides or our rings until 10 a.m. So 6-10 a.m. people can swim laps the long way of the pool,” said Hanson. “That morning time is a great time to come in for a more quiet environment.”
The facility also houses multiple cardio and weight rooms for those looking to workout outside of the pool.
"WE ARE ON OUR THIRD BUILDING, BUT WE STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL POOL, WHICH IS AMAZING AFTER 133 YEARS.”
Kris Hanson
"THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THE WATER.”
Out of water, they offer exercise classes like Zumba Gold , Spin, and more.
“We have people standing outside the door at 6 a.m. waiting to get their workouts in before it’s too late in the day.”
Along with these activities, there are water aerobics classes, aquatic therapy, and swimming lessons. Evans Plunge is home to the Fall River Swim Team as well.
“We try to meet everybody’s needs,” said Hanson. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT EVANSPLUNGE.COM+

For Rebecca Christensen, food has always been an adventure. Holding an unquenchable desire to taste everything while growing up, she says it made sense for her to pursue a career as a chef.
“I always had the desire to share what I was excited about with others, hoping it would bring them joy as well,” Christensen expressed.
After gaining a strong desire to open her own restaurant, she aspired to create her own dishes and share them with others.
In 2018, Christensen opened Buffalo Dreamer in Hot Springs, offering a transformative experience of cuisine that's prepared with love and intention.

BLUE SKIES, WARM WEATHER — WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?
Summer is always a great time to travel, but did you know it's also (statistically) the most dangerous time to be on the road? You've got someplace to be. Keep your family safe and on schedule with these tips.
GOOD ADVICE FOR THE ROAD AHEAD
YOUR SUMMER ROADMAP FOR A SAFE ROAD TRIP
Did you know it wasn't until 1968 that seat belts were required on all cars sold in the US? Since then, seat belts have saved thousands of lives every year. Always buckle up.
Where the roads are winding, and the sights are plentiful. Riders, always remember to put on a helmet before hitting the road.
STURGIS WALL DINO
This year's rally takes place Aug. 4–13.
A dino so big you can see it from the interstate. Just don't stare at it for too long. A distracted driver is a dangerous driver.
BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK
There are almost 1,000 different species of animals in the Badlands. Drive slowly and look out for wildlife in the road.
PIONEER AUTO MUSEUMDIGNITY: OF EARTH AND SKY
A rest stop like no other. Overlooking the Missouri River, the Dignity Statue is the perfect place to pull over, check your texts and enjoy the artistic and natural beauty of the area.
THE CORN PALACE
Don't get a lead foot. The speed limit in front of the Corn Palace is only 20mph.
Need
CONSTRUCTION SEASON
Like all good things, beautiful roads take time and effort. Keep safe while moving through construction zones: slow down, stay alert and move over for workers.
PORTER SCULPTURE PARK
There's a lot to see here — just try not to do it all from the driver's seat. Make a pit stop to see the sights, stretch those legs and avoid drowsy driving.
SIOUX FALLS
Christensen described that her start with Buffalo Dreamer was anything but simple. While she was able to acquire equipment from restaurants her parents previously owned, she still had a list of boxes she needed to check off.
When she was denied multiple grants and loans to help with accruing licenses, equipment, and food, she knew she could count on her community for support.
“I decided to start a Go Fund Me campaign and people from the community and my family graciously gave to it,” she reflected.
As Christensen contemplated what to title her restaurant, she discovered the theme of her childhood dreams made the perfect fit.
“I have had many poignant dreams of Buffalo,” said Christensen. She adds that those who dream of buffalo are called ‘buffalo dreamers’.
“MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO COOKING IS MY MOM, & SHE MAKES FOOD BETTER THAN ANYONE I KNOW.”

When creating new dishes, Christensen says it is all about getting in touch with her intuition.
“I trust my instincts on how to combine flavors and ingredients,” she said. “I draw from the many flavors I’ve tasted throughout my life.”
With 23 years of professional experience, paired with a French culinary background, Christensen enjoys putting her own spin on historical dishes from around the world.
She describes her dishes as "Eclectic American Cuisine," and offers a seasonally changing menu paired with weekly specials.
As Christensen explained, “It’s great to have trendy items on the menu, but above it all, I care about creating highvibrational food, with high-quality ingredients that are satisfying in flavor.”
With her unique international dish combinations including various notes of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory flavors, Christensen strives to create a "Soul Food" experience that brings customers a sense of comfort and joy.
The chef encourages her guests to sit back and relax while enjoying an abundance of flavor, crafted carefully by Christensen and her staff.
Guests are introduced to new flavors with Buffalo Dreamers small plates including Smoked Salmon Blini or Watermelon Jalapeño Salad with mixed greens, jalapeño lime vinaigrette, red onion, cucumber, feta cheese, and watermelon.
The flavor journey continues into her catalog of entrées with Turmeric Ginger Mung Beans (V), Tasmanian Ocean Trout, and the Swimming Angel, a chicken breast coated in peanut sauce, fresh herb slaw, paired with jasmine rice, and seasonal vegetables.
Conclude with a decadent dessert like the Huckleberry Lime Tarts (V) or the Chocolate Pot de Créme with dark chocolate, vanilla whipped créme, and fresh berries.

Christensen’s passion lies in transforming simple ingredients into something extraordinary. She believes Buffalo Dreamer is unique in how the dishes are prepared.
Every dish is cooked to order using housemade ghee, but vegan dishes are prepared with coconut or avocado oil.
“While this adds additional costs to creating our food, we believe it makes a huge difference and it’s something most restaurants out there aren’t doing,” explained Christensen.
After being open for nearly five years, Christensen has been able to accrue special moments with her customers.
“It’s always very special and rewarding when the food is enjoyed by anyone that comes in,” said Christensen.
She continued, “But there has been a handful of people who have told me after a meal that they would eat that very dish for their last meal on Earth. That means more to me than I can say.”

CUSTOMERS COME TO US LOOKING FOR…
amazing handcrafted ice cream in both traditional and imaginative flavors, great-tasting food, and some shopping.
I STARTED COOKING AND ENTERTAINING…
at a young age. Professionally, I have been a cook and chef for over 15 years.
WE STARTED OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH STENSLAND DAIRY…
by searching for a local dairy that would make our proprietary ice cream mix recipe. Not only were they open to the idea, but we learned that their cows have 'old world' A2/A2 genetics. This allows most lactose intolerant people to eat our ice cream without problems associated with conventional A1/A2 milk.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT PUTTING THE CREAMERY TOGETHER WAS THAT…
it was fun to find the history of the building and refresh it into a place people can come to year round for their ice cream fix.
WE HAVE 28 FLAVORS…
of ice cream from April to October. The slow season, we carry 16. We have a full menu in the high season and change the menu in the fall to include items like Chicken Pot Pie, soups, burgers, fries, and specials.
SOMETHING THAT IS INFLUENCING ME RIGHT NOW IS…
customers’ flavor ideas and what [fruits and produce are] in season.
SOMEWHERE I LOVE TO GO FOR INSPIRATION IS…
into the forest or to hang out with the yaks. I love their personalities and just clearing my mind. A good soak in the hot springs is great, too. The colors in changing seasons and produce gets me thinking about what I can match up and create.

MY FAVORITE FLAVOR IS…
it varies for ice cream and food based on my mood, the season, or something brand new. My go-to flavors are Black Raspberry Chip, Espresso Chip, and anything peanut butter. I’ll never knock a quality vanilla.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT OUR ICE CREAM…
is the cream. All of our flavors are between 15% and 18% butterfat. Because the butterfat carries so much flavor, we are able to drop the sugar level down by 30% from typical grocery store brands. This results in a product that is not so sugary, yet rich in flavor with a great mouth feel.

The Historic Burdette House
Nestled one block off of the main business district of Hot Springs is The Historic Burdette House—a short-term rental property lovingly nicknamed “Hot Springs’ Best Kept Secret.”
The three-story home was built in 1891 and has been many things over the years, including a cancer sanitarium in the early 1900s.
Today, the charming building is home to Andy and Denise Ondrejka, and the second floor is open for guests to rest their heads during their stay in the Black Hills.
After visiting the quiet town in May of 2021, the couple didn’t want to leave.
“We fell in love with the Black Hills. We came down here to relax because we did all the tourist stuff up there. We fell in love with the house, the location, the town, and the people,” said Andy.
In July 2021, they purchased the property and began living in the home and operating the rental.

“When they sold us the house, the second floor came pretty much as is,” said Andy.
The only things that the couple added were a few decorations and fresh coats of paint.
Though it’s an old house, the space caters well to housing the couple and their guests without causing much disturbance.
“We can’t hear you, and you can’t hear us,” explained Andy. “We can blast the TV, and you can’t hear it. It’s so sound proof.”
Visitors have easy access to all the attractions in Hot Springs, as the house is located within walking distance of many of them including Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Spa , Buffalo Dreamer, Springs Coffee, and Southern Hills Mercantile
When it’s time to relax, the Burdette House has plenty of opportunities to do so.
Denise Ondrejka
“There are so many beautiful places in Hot Springs to go.”
“It’s peaceful,” said Denise. “You’ve got the second floor to yourself. You can go out back and use the firepit and the sauna and do what you want.”
Along with the firepit and the sauna, guests can use the small playset or watch the turtles swimming in the pond.
Sheldon and Franklin, the two turtles, used to belong to the Ondrejka’s children.
“They kept growing and growing, and we fell in love with them,” said Denise. “We feed them fruit. They'll come up and take it from our hands. Sheldon and Franklin are very domesticated.”
Guests can even get to know the turtles for themselves during feeding time.
“If we have guests with kids, we’ll text the family to come down and join us,” said Andy.
Any guest who would like to try feeding the turtles during this time gets the chance to do so.
“It’s one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen,” said Denise.

Following that theme, the goal is to design the third floor in a more historic manner than the second floor is.

“You’ll really come back to nature when you come here with that rest and relaxation,” said owner Kara Hagen. “I’m really grateful to bring this to the community and have the health and wellness aspect of the natural mineral spring waters come back to this area.”
At the spa, guests can soak, treat themselves to spa services, and attend classes and workshops.

Spend some time rotating through the hot and cool pools.
“People should come here for relaxation and to make sure that they’re taking care of themselves,” said manager Bohden Balgheim. “Make sure that you’re stress free so you can be the best you.”
Last year, the spa underwent a spacious expansion, adding four massage rooms, five indoor restrooms, and two pools to the existing four.
Three of the six pools remain at their natural temperatures, ranging between 88 and 93 degrees. The other three are hot pools, heated to temperatures up to 106 degrees depending on the day and weather.
“We have a nice hot to cool circular pattern out here now,” said Hagen.
The two newest pools allow guests to switch between a hot and cool pool with ease.
“It’ll help us with our capacity issues. We didn’t expect to be as busy as we are in the winter, so my biggest problem is keeping up with the demand,” explained Hagen.
Before the addition, the two hot pools had room for about 12 people each. With the third, larger hot pool, that capacity has nearly doubled as it seats 20.
Warm up in the pool house between soaks, which is heated with a fireplace and has lockers for belongings.
To maintain the natural beauty and cleanliness of the pools, they get frequent refreshes.
“Every week we drain them, clean them, power wash them, and they are good to go,” said Hagen.
restore
“The general vibe that we’re going for is a relaxing environment to heal,” said Balgheim. “We’re coming in to make sure all of our clients feel relaxed and stress free. They’re in a safe space.”
Entering the lobby, ethereal music fills the space as the front desk attendants greet guests.
“Spa services range from massages, Foot Treatments, Facials, Energy Healing, and Reiki work,” said Balgheim. “You name it, we pretty much do it. It’s more about restorative work.”
Though soaking in the pools doesn’t take reservations, spa services book out a few weeks. When planning a trip to Hot Springs, make sure to book any extra services in advance to ensure a spot in the schedule.
memberships
Love Moccasin Springs? Look into getting a monthly, season, or couple’s season membership for unlimited soaking, unlimited yoga classes, and 10% off spa services.
Aromatherapy is one example of a massage booking at the spa, where the massage therapist uses oil or lotion with essential oils to create a relaxing environment. Other massages include Deep Tissue, Hot Stones, and Swedish Massage.
For those who can't decide between the options, there’s Integrative Therapy that combines techniques based on what the therapist specializes in. Polarity Therapy integrates energy healing and massage to release tension and bring a sense of balance.
Moccasin Springs also hosts workshops from time to time, such as Sound Healing, Yoga , Crystal Bowls, and more.
Another new addition to the site is a salt room.
“That himalayan salt wall is good for lowering blood pressure and other health and wellness benefits,” said Hagen. “We’re one of three salt rooms in the Black Hills.”
“All of our water is 100% natural mineral springs. It comes from the earth.”

The site has seen many forms from the Black Hills Spa in 1881 to the Hot Springs Hotel and Minnekahta Bath House in 1890. The property closed in 1963 and wouldn’t see traffic again until Hagen purchased the property in 2014. After five years of restoration, Moccasin Springs opened to the public again.
“It was just a jungly mess or ruins,” said Hagen.
With a lot of time and effort, they had to clear each of the pools and restore it to its original glory.
“We’ve got such great, natural beauty in this area,” said Hagen. “I can’t imagine what it looked like 125 years ago. It’s so incredibly beautiful. I tried to create that natural modern, rustic feel to take you back.”
When revitalizing the property, it was important to Hagen to maintain the indigenous history that came with the moccasin-shaped, red rock pool. One of the springs on site is known as the Moccasin Spring, which is where the namesake lies.

Learn more about the executive director from her entertainment background to her favorite video game.
Have you always been interested in this industry?
My background is in the entertainment industry. After moving from Los Angeles to Hot Springs, there were not many film industry opportunities. So I worked in retail for a while and then switched to the tourism industry, which is really a great industry to be in. There are similarities between the two. Both require hard work and give great enjoyment.
Where is your favorite place to go when you aren’t working?
I love being at my house in Hot Springs, but when I’m in the mood for roaming around, I like the wildlife loop in Custer State Park , Wind Cave, and Spearfish Canyon
What's one of your guilty pleasures & why?
I love playing Assasin’s Creed on Xbox Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is my favorite, but I play a lot of fantasy games. It’s relaxing and fun and a great way to de-stress.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
This is a really great job–there are so many cool elements to it. I meet really interesting people. I enjoy the administrative side as well as planning events, but I think I enjoy representing Hot Springs the most.
What’s next for you?
Who knows? Life is great. I have so much to be grateful for. I’m just living the good life here in little Hot Springs, South Dakota.
