What is a New Beginning? Hello and welcome to the very first issue of 626 Capricorn Road! The theme for this issue is “New Beginnings” and we wanted to explore that through the use of artistic photos and original written work. Before you explore this issue, we must first ask you, what is a new beginning? What makes something new or the start of something new? Is it an attitude? Is it a reaction? What makes people want to start again? Could it be the new year and all the possibilities that it could bring? A fresh start for most people guarantees them some sort of reset or do-over on their life. A way to help them cope with something that may have left a traumatic effect on their life. It is with new beginnings that you look forward. You make the effort to set new goals for yourself. You tell yourself that you are going to work on all of the things that you couldn’t last year. Things that were holding you back from reaching your potential. If your life was a novel, a new beginning would be consider a chapter. In this chapter, you start at zero. You take all that you’ve learned about yourself and you apply it to what you must achieve in order to get to the next chapter. The length of the chapter is up to you. It could be a short one where the words are merely shorter goals or a shorter self-realization. It could be a longer chapter with long-term goals or a longer period of time spent finding yourself. You write the words and set the page length. The people around you are your readers. They are getting to this new chapter either with preconceived notions or wide-eyed abandon. It is up to you to reveal where the starting place is for your new beginning.

PART 1 An Ending

Let Us Start at the Beginning

It happened in a flash A moment in time frozen in a disgraced memory A word or two spoken in fury Enough to break her down Send her away in anger Returning in an amnesiac state Emotion lost with her past self Beginning anew with the present There was nothing for her to grasp Nothing with a sense of direction

A sense of purpose But she took her first step Like an infant child Cautiously with new exhilaration She fell over and over again But this time she was determined to stand up To walk on her own Even if it meant walking alone Absent of another

“The thing about new beginnings is that they require something else to end. - Blair Waldorf.

“New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.” - Lao Tzu

PART 2: Where to Go?

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself.” – George Bernard Shaw

A Second Chance

Late nights gazing out of her window onto the bustling life below her It was 2am and she was waiting for a sign Something to move her away from her window sill Something to keep her from disintegrating into a mindless observer Something that was going to carry her away Like a long-lost love returning home She wanted to feel inspired She wanted to feel motivation It was there right at her reach But her grasp could not be extended Unless Unless she placed her concentration on the cracked pavement Searching in between the lines for her guidance

Traveling farther and farther until Wait There She found it She found her answer Buried within the imperfections of a common city sidewalk She was to start from within Look in the crevices of her own features and draw inspiration from her scars Scars that told the story of a thousand moments of hurt and sorrow Happiness and light Frailty and vulnerability And one of a girl perched on her window sill looking to the world for her new beginning

PART 3: Fly Away

Falling Girl

It scared her more than anything Not knowing what she couldn’t see Not being able to put a name to a faceless sight It wasn’t that she wasn’t open to new adventures She wasn’t ready to have them end To go through the experience only to create a distant memory She tried to turn her mind off Steer it in a different direction But she couldn’t It was something that she thought about in awe How can she plan for something that will eventually come and go How can she dream of something that she would eventually grow out of She couldn’t freefall not knowing when she would land And when she landed if everything would end Or could it be the start of something new

“Finish each day and be done with it. Tomorrow is a new day.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

GROUNDED THOUGHTS

You ever wonder why people take solace in looking up at the sky? I always thought of it as people searching for something they can’t find on solid ground. Like they are looking for answers. When we’re little kids, we try to see how many animals we can find in the clouds. The clouds aren’t really shaped like anything, but our imagination makes us think something is up there.

When we’re teenagers, we find romance in the clouds. Or at night we find romance in the stars. It’s the one time where we feel slightly understood. Like we belong in a world that constantly tells us that we’re too young to know anything about the world. As we become adults, the sky means something different to us. It’s a metaphor. A metaphor for endless possibilities.

The phrase “the sky is the limit” seems more applicable than ever before. But who measures the sky? How do we know if that really is the limit? That’s when we tell ourselves that we set the bar for however far we wanna reach. It’s funny what you are able to come up with when you lay down and look up. When you try to find something up there that you can’t find down here.

PART 4 Time to Leave

You May Now Enter

Finally She caught her breath A moment of fresh air entering her lungs It was crazy to think that she had been afraid Scared of being on her own Not knowing what came next But she’s here and ready to take on the world She’s gone over the steps

She’s laid down the foundation All she has to do now is put one foot in front of the other Move one step at a time And then 3 2 1 Free fall into her future

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Chinese Proverb

“And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” – Meister Eckhart
