Myth in the Forest

Myth in the Forest

-

The zootopia of Yoshimasa TSUCHIYA Animals are often anthropomorphized in mythology and folklore. Like qilin in Chinese mythology, fox in Inari shrines, and deer as the messenger of the god in Nara. Or that rabbit has excellent hearing, the tiger is a symbol of strength, the fox is smart but cunning, these animals are often given powers that don't exist in humans. The animals created by Yoshimasa TSUCHIYA (b.1977) seem no different from those in wild nature, yet are often distinctive from the traditional depiction of animals. Throughout history, they carry the consciousness and emotions that human project on, weaving in and out of both historical and cultural legacies. Combining abstract and figurative images, and transforming into spiritual form and shape. Yoshimasa TSUCHIYA explores the belief and representation that each animal carries, and the humanity found within has become an inspiration to his creation. The exhibition Myth of the Forest tells a story that TSUCHIYA imagined where the animals have expanded in their ego and became to outgrow from the shape that human has given them. They transcend beyond the human consciousness and evolved into a new species of complexity that is far beyond the limitations of the human mind. It leads to an undeniable disparities between humans and animals, where the animals owns themselves and created a story of their own. The exhibition starts with a snow-white, almost imaginary habitat to gradually lead the viewers into the fascinating world of Yoshimasa TSUCHIYA. As we step into the psychedelic space mixed with natural and unnatural elements, it gives the viewers an illusion of stepping into different utopias. The forest contains both fantasy and the unknown, which enables the viewers to experience an adventure that goes beyond human development. Myth of the Forest leads us to an exploration of the endless imagination in our minds.

Yoshimasa TSUCHIYA Antelope Painted woodcarving, crystal 68 x 74 x 21 cm 2021
