The Essence of Existence

Marefumi KOMURA

The Essence of Existence attempts to perceive the transcendental experience in the medium of artworks and explore the form and the essence of contemporary art. Five artists are invited to the exhibition: Kazuhiro ITO ( b.1972 ), Marefumi KOMURA ( b.1977 ), Satoshi OHNO ( b.1980 ), Martin GALLE ( b.1981 ), and Chien Chiang HUA ( b.1975 ), each of whom is the expert in different art fields. From bronze sculptures, oil paintings, and acrylic paintings to ink and acrylic on cotton, the artists’ philosophy of creation regarding Existentialism is examined via various art forms and media.

Japanese artist, Kazuhiro ITO ( b.1972 ), adopts bronze as the main material for his sculptures. He merges the trait of inevitability and contingency of bronze to create his own technique which preserves the concave and convex texture of the material as the trace of the brush stroke from common oil paintings. Looking at Marefumi KOMURA’s ( b.1977 ) works, they are easily reminiscent of Francis Bacon’s ( b.1909-1992 ) tortured faces; however, KOMURA refocuses on timeless themes such as “fragility and depicts the socalled “beauty” hidden beneath human’s heart. Satoshi OHNO ( b.1980 ) was born in Gifu, Japan. The primeval forests in nature inspire him to create pieces with iconic colors and genderless portraits from his observations and experiences. Martin GALLE ( b.1981 ) was a student of Neo Rauch ( b.1960 ), the master of the Leipzig School. He adds abstract color patches on his realism paintings to express the essence of disappearing paradox. The Taiwanese artist Chien Chiang HUA’s ( b.1975 ) Experience Cycling illustrates the extreme challenges of such physical training. The journey goes from curiosity, struggle, and

exhaustion to regaining the courage in order to overcome the difficulties.

The exhibition would guide the viewers to rethink the essence of art’s existence through different materials in these artworks. Jean-Paul Sartre ( b.1905-1980 ) argues that “existence precedes essence.” Nevertheless, there is no distinction between the existence of art and its value only varies from the individual’s aesthetics. From the works of these five artists, we can tell that their contexts portray the resilience and fragility in the state of life through the inevitability and incidental of their creative mediums. The value and meaning of life are obtained by means of practical actions, which thus reflects the essence of existence in contemporary civilization.

ITO was born in 1972 in Fukuoka, Japan, graduated from Musashino Art University in 1997, currently is Tama Art University sculpture lecturer.

Kazuhiro ITO has long been fascinated by bronze climbing materials, strict self-artists spend his whole life challenging the creation of bronze art and studying bronze climbing materials. A long time ago Ito said that the sculptor's job was to "seek, not to make." and Ito not only use sculpture as a means of artistic expression, but also as an purpose in itself.

SatoshiOHNO

Satoshi OHNO, born in 1980 in Japan, graduated from Tokyo University of Styling in 2004.

He lives and works in Yamanashi, Japan.

Satoshi OHNO (b1980) is from the hometown where is located on the foot of Mt. Fuji, there is surrounded by trees. It is a place where life and death are constantly circulating, and where life is nurtured and nourished like a cradle. Inspired by the environment, his self-portraits and paintings of primitive forests evoke a distinct and inherent humanity inspired by the pressures of the wild. The expression was influenced by Edward Munch, German romanticist Caspar David Friedrich, expressionist painters, and Joseph Beuys, especially their description of the relationship between man and nature, the development of "self" in nature and society, and their attitude to painting.

David Elliott, a former director of the Mori Museum of Art, sees Shinto and Tantric Buddhism colors in OHNO's reverence for nature, as well as textures similar to those of neo-expressionist artists Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kifer. As a younger generation of Japanese artists, OHNO has the challenge of surpassing older artists like Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami. In German Romanticism and Expressionism, OHNO learned how to view nature, society and religion. He developed his own painting language and the method of dialogue with history and pure art.

In 2010, he participated in a group exhibition at the Taipei Aki Gallery. In recent years, he has been selected for exhibitions at the Hara Museum, Tokyo Opera City Gallery, and The National Museum of Art Osaka.

他的展出經歷包含 ESMoA, USA (2016),Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Germany (2016),Aspn Galerie, Germany (2015), QBox Gallery, Greece (2013),Museum Abtei Liesborn, Germany (2013),ESMoA, USA (2013),Apolda Avantgarde Art Gallery, Germany (2013)

Chien-Chiang HUA (b.1975), was born in Taipei, graduated from Ph. D. Department of Fine Arts (Ink), National Taiwan Normal University. He is also selected for the Central Academy of Fine Arts exchange program in Beijing.

HUA is one of the most represented surrealist painters in Taiwan. He combines Eastern traditional gouache with the technique of ink painting to depict a world that is utopian, yet dystopic in its foundation. For him, living is not only about the mundane, but it is also about choosing the right path. He juxtaposed nature with destruction to structure a miniature model of a world where the perfect parallel with the imperfect. It is a metaphor for the different directions of humanity can take depending on its choices, ending up with possible futures that carry our hope and contradictions.

He has exhibited in many world-class museums Chiayi Art Museum, Chiayi (2022), Tainan Art Museum, Tainan (2020), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2017), Shanghai Yuehu Museum, Shanghai (2011), Gwangju Museum of Art, Seoul (2010), Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei(2007),.
