tWenty-Fourth sunday in ordinary tiMe (Year B) 12/13 SEPTEMBER 2015 Entrance Antiphon Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you, that your prophets be found true. Hear the prayers of your servant, and of your people Israel. Reflecting on the Mission of the Passionists This week we celebrate two great feasts which are particularly special to the Passionists. On Monday we celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross and on Tuesday, Our lady of Sorrows. The Gospel this Sunday anticipates Monday’s feast as it describes the crucial moment at the middle point of Our Lord’s ministry when Peter declares his faith in Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God. Whilst this is a triumphant moment, Jesus immediately adds that his triumph is not an earthly one; there is not going to be the usual victory parade with praise and thanksgiving all around. His triumph is to be by accepting suffering, humiliation and death; the lowest depths of human experience, in order to raise them up and redeem them through the Resurrection. This is a fitting time for Passionists to reflect on their core mission of “keeping alive the memory of the Passion” and so Frs Mark, Patrick and Charles will be joining fellow Passionist men and women this week from Ireland, Poland, Germany and Australia for a week of talks and reflection at Minsteracres. Fr Malachy, suitably refreshed, we trust, after a fortnight back home in Belfast, will be holding the fort along with Bros Francis and Peter. Building the Kingdom Please strongly consider coming to a deanery day at the Franciscan Study Centre, Canterbury on Saturday 19 Sept from 11.00am to 3pm. More info p.3

Building the Kingdom: a deanery day at the Franciscan Study Centre, Canterbury on Saturday 19 Sept from 11.00am to 3pm. This will be a chance to hear from Deacon Barry and Dr Joanna Waller about the Evangelisation Conference “Proclaim ‘15” held last July in Birmingham and how it might inspire us to respond to Pope Francis’s call in “The Joy of the Gospel”. Please let Fr Mark know if you would like to attend. Demelza Quiz: Saturday 19 September, 7 for 7.30pm. Tickets £7 each bookable via Nick 07546 454096 or Moyra Feathers 01227 368662. Help for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Calais: the PPC discussed the relief work that Catholic parishes near Dover have been providing - see article in current issue of The Pilgrim. We have been in touch with the main organiser, Ben Bano – his advice is to wait a month or two until the current wave of support (which has been extremely generous) may have died down and then we could offer further humanitarian aid. Lost a child? Another item discussed by the PPC was the possibility of a service for those who have lost children through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or abortion. We will keep you informed. Diocesan Day of Renewal: St George’s Cathedral on Saturday 26 September, main speaker Fr Steven Wymer on the theme: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” We have hired a minibus – still one or two places free. Please let either Fr Mark or Sr Corinne know. We will depart at 8.30am. Songs of Praise: Sunday 4 October at 4pm. As this is the feast of St Francis, we thought we might concentrate on hymns which have the theme of Nature. Another theme is that of Mercy, as we are approaching the beginning of the “Year of Mercy” called for by Pope Francis. Please leave your hymn suggestions in the basket at the back of church. Companions of Prayer: next meeting Tues 7 October to celebrate feast of Our Lady of the Rosary - 7.00pm at 25 Western Esplanade Cleaning rota and other rotas: can be found in the porch. The 1st Collection for last week was £912.89 (of which £531.20 was from gift-aided envelopes and £381.69 was loose collection). Thank you. NB If you are a UK tax-payer then you can gift-aid whatever you offer. To gift-aid your offering please fill in one of the forms at the back of church.
