tWenty-ninth sunday in ordinary tiMe (Year B) 17/18 OCTOBER 2015 Entrance Antiphon To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O God; turn your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me. St Paul of the Cross Monday 19 October is the feast of St Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionists. He lived in Italy and founded the Order in 1720. His inspiration came from his contemplation of the Passion of Jesus which he came to see as the surest sign of God’s love for the world. Passionists take the three common vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and in addition a fourth vow: to keep alive the memory of the Lord’s Passion. St Paul of the Cross always wanted the Order to spread from Italy to England, and he decreed that every house of the Order should offer daily prayer for the conversion of England. He died in 1775 and his dream about England became a reality in 1841 when Dominic Barberi landed at Folkestone and introduced the Order to these islands. Within just over a generation, our parish of Herne Bay was founded. So this is all part of the family history of our parish. Walsingham Pilgrimage for Life The Walsingham Pilgrimage of Reparation whose focus is the sanctity of life took place on 27 September and for the first time was attended by an organised group from Kent – 17 pilgrims went by coach from here. It was a very prayerful day, with the Joyful and Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary being prayed on the coach and hymns to Our Lady being sung. (Report by Althea Walker, who organised the group from Kent, continued on page 3)

An hour of adoration every weekday from 8.30-9.30am has been set aside for a particular intention (see table above). Those unable to make the hour each morning are encouraged to take time during the day to pray for these intentions.

Walsingham Pilgrimage (continued): At the Chapel of Reconciliation there was a full programme: confessions, the Angelus and Mass, outdoor Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic adoration and then the silent Holy Mile walk to the ruins of the medieval Priory where the prayer for England and the Salve Regina concluded the day. The peace and beauty of this ancient Shrine (founded in 1061) helped all to focus on God’s love and mercy. The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary were prayed on the journey home. It was a wonderful, memorable day and a joy to give honour to Our Lady of Walsingham. Next year the pilgrimage will be on Sunday 18 September. Traidcraft: next weekend (24/25 October) after 6pm Mass on Saturday and 10.30-11.15am on Sunday. Christmas Bazaar: Sat 5 December in the Retreat Hall starting at 11am. We urgently require helpers to run the stalls and donations of fancy goods, toys, tins of food, bottles of drink and books. Anyone who can help in these areas please see Sister Corinne or any member of the PPC. Funeral of Lynda Ellmers: will take place on Monday 26 October at midday. Let’s Talk (Adults): Divorce and Re-Marriage - a very topical subject, in the Social Club on Mon 19 October at 7.30-9pm. All are very welcome. Cleaning Rota: Team C. Other rotas are at the back of church. Parish Mission: Next week, we shall be hearing from Karen, a member of the Sion Community, a Catholic community for evangelisation, who have been doing wonderful work in parishes and schools up and down the land for the past 25 years. She will be speaking about our upcoming Parish Mission, which will take place 11-25 February next year. Quiz nights: see the parish website for the full list! Animals Worldwide Quiz in Retreat Hall: Sat 31 Oct 7 for 7.30pm; £7, to book call Gabrielle (367426). Prayer and Praise: next weekend 6-7pm in the church. The 1st Collection for last week was £939.94 (of which £421.50 was from gift-aided envelopes and £518.44 was loose collection). Thank you. CAFOD’s appeal: an extra £652.38 was added - the total raised £1290.75. Aid to Church in Need’s appeal raised a marvellous £621.76. Well done! NB Remember, if you pay income tax, to gift-aid whatever you offer. To gift-aid your offering please fill in one of the forms at the back of church.
